When a mystery author claims her cat as coauthor, it's a fairly safe bet that the team won't be producing disturbing psychological thrillers or hard-edged legal procedurals. And indeed, Rita Mae Brown and her cat, Sneaky Pie, have carved out a comfortable niche for themselves in the cozy category, spinning tales (Rest in Pieces; Murder, She Meowed; Cat on the Scent) around the goings-on in Crozet, a small Virginia town where everyone knows everyone else and recipes and gossip are exchanged over the post office counter. Mary Minor Haristeen ("Harry") is Crozet's postmistress and the proud owner of two cats, Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and one corgi, Tee Tucker--animals with an uncanny ability to sniff out secrets and hidden motives as well as mice and roast beef.

Pawing Through the Past capitalizes on the myriad subtle relationships that form the backbone of small-town culture, and which Brown and Sneaky Pie have carefully woven throughout the Mrs. Murphy series. In a nicely appropriate nod to that culture's rivalries and alliances, Brown has chosen a high school reunion--traditional hotbed of simmering unease--as her mise-en-scène. When each member of the Crozet High Class of 1980 receives an anonymous note stating, "You'll never get old," most take it as a joke or a compliment. But when the class womanizer turns up with a bullet between his eyes, and more notes--and more bodies--start appearing, Harry and her menagerie find themselves at the center of a revenge plot 20 years in the making.

Brown's latest is replete with the sly asides that have endeared her to animal lovers--"Cats are by instinct and inclination dedicated anarchists"--and with the naively humorous "conversations" between the animals themselves. When Pewter, watching a team of police officers wrestling a stiff corpse out of a dumpster, wonders, "Why don't they just break his arms and legs?" Murphy replies knowingly, "They'd pass out. Humans are touchy about their dead." Unfortunately, these favorable attributes can't quite mask an incoherent plot, nor Brown's awkwardly pompous social commentary: "By and large, the women looked better than the men, testimony to the cultural pressure for women to fuss over themselves." But Brown's legions of fans will doubtlessly forgive these shortcomings, concentrating instead on the antics of a memorable four-legged and furry trio. --Kelly Flynn

Book Description

"You'll never get old."

Each member of the class of 1980 has received the letter. Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen, who is on the organizing committee for Crozet High's twentieth reunion, decides to take it as a compliment. Others think it's a joke.

But Mrs. Murphy senses trouble. And the sly tiger cat is soon proven right ... when the class womanizer turns up dead with a bullet between his eyes. Then another note followed by another murder makes it clear that someone has waited twenty years to take revenge.

While Harry tries to piece together the puzzle, it's up to Mrs. Murphy and her animal pals to sniff out the truth. And there isn't much time. Mrs. Murphy is the first to realize that Harry has been chosen Most Likely to Die, and if she doesn't hurry, Crozet High's twentieth reunion could be Harry's last.

5 out of 5 stars Reunions Can Be Murder!.......2006-09-09

In the 8th book in the Mrs. Murphy and Tucker Mystery series, two high school reunions have been scheduled in the town of Crozet, Virginia. Mary Minor Haristeen (Harry) is busy working on the planning committee for her 1980 class reunion, and Mrs. Hogendobber is hard at work planning her 1950 class reunion. Excitement is in the air as old friends start to arrive in town, and the participants are looking forward to unearthing old memories, and creating new ones. However, the memories quickly become bad ones, as a warning is mailed to each of Harry's classmates that reads, "You'll never get old". Initially, they believe it to be a complement, but a more sinister meaning is clear when one of the classmates is found murdered. Since the murdered man had been a "playboy" type that had relationships with dozens of women, the motive seemed clear. Sorting through the many suspects, secrets are unearthed, and several other motives for the killing are discovered. Several more men are murdered after receiving notes in a similar fashion, and a pattern develops. Sheriff Shaw and Deputy Cooper work hard to catch the killer before the whole class is murdered, and Harry's feline and canine sleuths work overtime to catch a murderer before their "mom" becomes the next victim.

Reading this book made me want to avoid my high school reunion at all costs! It was spooky how the killer kept murdering victims almost under the noses of the other classmates, and I was kept guessing as to the identity of the killer until the very end. This was a well crafted mystery that offered many clues (and red herrings), along with plot twists that made me unable to put the book down. This is definitely one of my favorites in the series, and I loved the fact that Mrs. Hogendobber has developed a strong friendship with an old boyfriend and that Harry and Fair are talking about their relationship again. This was a great mystery with some of my favorite characters in the cozy genre!

The first book in the series is called "Wish You Were Here". Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars These books are a lot of fun!.......2005-06-08

This latest in the Mrs. Murphy series is one of the best for awhile. In it we see Harry and her friends planning for a 20th School Reunion. Someone else is planning to make a splash at this reunion. This person hopes to leave a mark by killing off the Class of 1980 one by one. Does this person have a motive for killing certain people, or is it just random acts of violence? There are a large number of deaths in this book, but that adds to the excitement, but if people in Crozet keep getting murdered, there soon won't be anyone left. I love the characters, both animal and human, in this series, and am happy that I still have a few more Mrs.Murphy adventures to read. Murphy, Pewter and Tucker are wonderful (and they're pretty good sleuths too).

4 out of 5 stars Another winner.......2005-04-03

By the time a reader gets to the 7th in a series, they are hooked. And in the case of the Sneaky Pie Brown's works, they are also accustomed to and forgiving of the literary mistakes that occur in each volume. It's amazing how you can read such things as point of view shifts, unidentified speakers, etc., and still enjoy the book. In the case of the Mrs. Murphy mysteries, this has never been truer.

Once more new characters are introduced, this time for the high school reunions of the classes of 1980 and 1950. It's the 1980 bunch who are being murdered off, and no one knows why. And once again Mary Minor Haristeen is right in the middle. She and her pets and friends are all in danger, although they are not the initial targets. The methods of murder continue to be bizarre -- or at the very least odd -- and often brutal.

One of the more satisfying events in Pawing through the Past is the reuniting of Miranda Hogendobber and her high school sweetheart, Tracy Raz. Newly returned from his sojourn in Hawaii, he is being embraced by everyone, not only because he's a nice guy, but also because of the esteem in which Miranda is held by nearly everyone.

Fair Haristeen is still there, trying to convince Harry to marry him again by being brave, honorable, loving, and very good looking. The rest of the usual characters -- Susan Tucker, BoomBoom Craycroft, Big Mim and Little Mim, Deputy Cooper, and Sheriff Shaw among them -- step into their roles, delightfully.

These stories are always pleasurable and quick reads. Anyone wanting to check out the series could pick up any volume, but if the first, Wish You Were Here, is available, try starting there.

5 out of 5 stars The Class of 1980 - or what's left of it.......2004-02-09

When the toast at the 20th class reunion is "To the class of '80 - or what's left of it" you know there is more going on than reminiscing about old times. This book is an excellent mystery in Crozet as members of Harry's class are mysteriously murdered - and Harry may be next! The author's grasp of human nature is dead on here - and her grasp of animal nature can't be beat. Mrs. Murphy, Pewter and Tucker, who talk to each other and can understand humans, but cannot be understood by them, are hilarious. The animals' personalities really come forth in this book, which triples the fun. This is a delightful, original mystery which I would recommend to anyone, and I look forward eagerly to reading her other Mrs. Murphy books.

    Book Description

Rita Mae Brown and her literary feline sidekick Sneaky Pie Brown are back with a third omnibus of clever sleuthing by postmistress Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen and her feline sidekick Mrs. Murphy. For the first time all in one volume, here are CAT ON THE SCENT, PAWING THROUGH THE PAST, and CLAWS AND EFFECT, three more prime examples of charm and murder co-existing in the lovely hamlet of Crozet, Virginia.

In CAT ON THE SCENT, the good people of Crozet are quite excited about their upcoming Civil War battle reenactment until things get a little too authentic when a soldier ends up with three very real bullets in his back.

Someone has waited twenty years to take revenge in PAWING THROUGH THE PAST. Crozet High's Class of 1980 is about to have its twentieth reunion--but one classmate is looking forward to it for the wrong reasons. Each member of the class receives a note saying “You'll never get old,” but it becomes clear this is more threat than compliment when a classmate turns up dead with a bullet between his eyes.

The juicy gossip from Crozet Hospital has everyone entertained in CLAWS AND EFFECT--until its source is found murdered. Mrs. Murphy sniffs out a dirty little secret that dates back to the days of the Underground Railroad, and she has to protect Harry from a coldly calculating killer with a prescription for murder.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2007-01-11

This is one of my favorite books in the DragonLance saga. The character of Linsha Majere is well developed and intriguing. This book has action, romance, and mystery. My copy has typos that the editor missed, but for dedicated DL fans, it doesn't matter. Should be followed by reading the Lisha trilogy, also awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Following the bloodline.......2002-12-06

As much as War of Souls follows the giant sweeping epic arcs of Krynn, it is good to be able to watch what the children of the original Dragonlance Chronicles heroes are doing... or in this case one particular grandchild.

That in and of itself does not make for a good book. But what did make this book good was a good solid storyline, interesting characters, and enough intrigue to keep you going from chapter to chapter.

I don't mean to spoil anything but not all details get resolved, but it does leave enough open for a true sequel (rather than the following Crossroads novels which are separate stories) that I would be very much inclined to read.

A few of the details are easy to figure out on your own in this book, and there are a few details you want to slap the main character for not seeing. But to be able to read through the boatload of events going on in one city existing in the location in Ansalon that screams 'Please Gods! Destroy us now!' is very much the treat.

              3 out of 5 stars A boring series.......2002-10-27

I was so looking forward to this trilogy. The look of it just promised a great read....but lead to such a disappointment.

The characters were likeable enough & the plot was good but I was left with an empty feeling at the end. I've come to expect a certain amount of action out of DL books & this had so little of it. This was more of a plotical intrique novel which is fine but it could've done with some more movement.

This is one of those books where the words are just crammed onto the page. The author spent too much time describing the obvious & not enough on making the plot more entertaining. Unfortunately, this was the best in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Linsha Majere, Knight of the Rose!.......2002-06-25

This has got to be one of the best Dragonlance novels I have ever read. Bar None! Linsha Majere is ordered my the Solmanics Clandestine Circle to get as close to Lord Bight as possible. They want to find out anything they can use to discredit him.

Shortly after a ship crashed into the docks in Saction's harbor. Almost everyone on board the ship is dead. Having died of some foul disease that no one has ever seen before. This plague threatens to wipe out all of Sanctions people if the cure is not found soon.

Linsha along with her companion Varia (an owl) are pulled into a tangled web of lies and half truths. Not only that but Linsha begins to have feelings for her commanding officer. She also begins to earn a healthy respect for Lord Bight.

In the end she will have to choose between here orders, or doing what feels right in here heart. 5 Stars to this amazing entry into the Dragonlance Saga!

4 out of 5 stars Among the best that I have read.......2002-04-24

I am addicted to Dragon Lance novels and Mary Herbert, in my opinion, is one of the best Dragon Lance authors that I have ever seen. The clearness of her prose makes her characters seem as if they are sitting right next to you as you read her tale. You will be left wondering why things are happening and awaiting with baited breath the next turn of the page. For Dragon Lance addicts, like myself, this is one of the best Dragon Lance books that I have seen in a long long time. The only reason that I have not given it five stars is because Mary Herbert is no Margret Weiss. She could stand to learn a bit from the acknowledged master of fantasy literature.

If you have not read any Dragon Lance before this one, go back and read Dragons of Autumn Twilight and the rest of the Chronicles and Legends sub-series first. The new reader will be a bit confused by the presence of the dragons and the references to Caramon, Tika and Palin. Needless to say this is not an entry book into the Dragon Lance saga.

For those of you are mildly interested in the Dragon Lance saga this one will hook you as it did me. Please be sure to have read the Chronicles, Legends, Dragons of a Summer Flame and the Dragons of a New Age trilogy before you read this one. This one will convert most people to addicts like me.

Now for a small snippet of the tale. The town is Sanction where Linsha Majere has been assigned by the Solmanic Nights to the Clandestine Circle, which has intern sent her to be Lord Bight's body guard. There appears to be something fishy about the governor of the town. Before she realizes what is happening, the governor is not the only one that needs to be saved. Slowly she works her way deeper and deeper into a wired mystery that is Lord Bight.

Women spend an extraordinary amount of money on cosmetics--$45 billion a year in the U.S. alone. Now in its fourth edition, Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me strikes fear in cosmetics-counter consultants everywhere. First off, Begoun has deconstructed ingredient lists. Ever wonder what methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben are doing in your mascara? And what is diazolidinyl urea? All four are potential irritants, and the latter is a preservative that can release formaldehyde, a class A carcinogen. Buyer beware.

Begoun also lists which companies are cruelty-free and which continue to conduct animal testing. The majority of the book--and that's nearly 800 pages--is devoted to reviews of thousands of cosmetics, from cleansers, foundations, alpha-hydroxy acids, and moisturizers to lip liners, eye shadows, and concealers, all of which Begoun has personally tested. (There are no hair care products listed, as that warrants another book entirely: Don't Go Shopping for Hair Care Products Without Me.)

She's perfectly frank and tells it like it is. (On Revlon's ColorStay Makeup: "goes far beyond the claim of 'It won't come off on him.' It won't come off when you want it to.") You'll learn how to tell when you're being boondoggled by a salesperson, what's overpriced and overhyped, as well as what's overlooked. More than 200 brands are included, along with a helpful summary at the end that lists the best products for each cosmetic category. It should be noted that not only is Begoun a fine consumer advocate, she's also a self-esteem advocate: she mentions time and again that even the best cosmetics won't necessarily improve your life, and that's a point well taken.

              Book Description

Paula Begoun's mission is to educate women on the facts that the $45 billion cosmetics industry doesn't want people to know. In her makeup and skincare bible, she deciphers ingredient lists, translates cosmetics-counter beauty babble, and evaluates the worth of virtually every product on the market. This completely revised and expanded edition includes more than 75 new product lines. "Her straight talk about what cosmetics can and can't do has penetrated the blare of magazine and advertising hype." - San Francisco Chronicle; "Paula is nationally recognized as an authority on the subject of cosmetics. . . . She takes the cosmetics companies to task." - Miami Herald.

1 out of 5 stars Difficult to Trust Someone Selling Their Own Line of Products.......2007-10-10

I was very interested in this book until I found out that the author has her own line of products that compete with every other product she critiques.
I have used many of the products in her books and completely disagree with most of her comments.
I would have a lot more respect for her and her information if she weren't selling her own lines of cosmetics.
If Amazon would allow zero stars, that's what this book would get.

1 out of 5 stars Save your $ she book slams most of the products without validity.......2007-09-23

I expected this book to enlighten me into whether the manufactures products performed as claimed, such as, whether a cucumber mask healed your skin as it claimed. All this books does is slam most of the products in here for a variety of reasons including "the maker didn't return a phone call" or even that "they did return a phone call but sounded as if they were trying to recruit me to sell their product" and products were slammed as being 'too costly' and 'only for those who have too much money' but never does the author describe the vast testing by the makers of the products.

None of the products were tested by the reviewer to reveal if they deliver what they promised, she only rated ingredients and whether they test on animals or use certain kinds of chemicals that the author claims "we are allergic to", apparently speaking for all of us. She also slams products saying 'if it was the best 2 years ago then how can it be improved?' WHAT AN IDIOT - predicts are constantly evolving as science progresses. This book is only good as expensive kindling for a fireplace. That GOD I bought a used copy for pennies - that is all it is worth.

5 out of 5 stars Great book and author, but NOT the final edition........2007-09-07

Paula Begoun is a great researcher. Whenever it comes to skin care, hair, make up, etc., I turn to her books and website. She stays on top of these things. Just about all the skin care and make up products I use are from her line.

From reading the negative reviews, most of them it seems are coming from those who work for the companies that she has reviewed, their favorite product was simply given a negative rating, or they've simply misinterpreted or didn't read her book carefully enough.

Although she had stated this would be her last edition, according to her Beauty Bulletin newsletter as of September 6th, 2007 she is actually working on a 7th edition and it should be out in January 2008.

              2 out of 5 stars Too complicated.......2007-08-23

The original book was great. This one is too much. Finding anything takes more time than it's worth. Everything is recommended.

3 out of 5 stars great book but is too dated now.......2007-04-26

I'm a huge fan of the work of Paula Begoun. I have bought all her books but she has quit revising her guide to cosmetics buying. Cosmetics companies regularly change their products, at least the names, so this book won't be of much help in shopping. However, she has a newsletter you can subscribe to and a website. She does her research and will save you lots of money - I now buy most of my cosmetics at the drugstore rather than at dept stores and could not be happier with them.

Not just for vegetarians, there's never been a better time for this award-winning book! Carol Gelles, one of the best-known authorities on the subject, offers hundreds of appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, and more, proving that vegetarian cuisine is anything but boring. The flavor combinations are limitless, drawing on the ingredients and spices from every international cuisine. Discussions of vegetables, grains, beans, and soyfoods are interspersed throughout the recipes, making the book easy enough for beginners to follow. And every recipe is coded as lacto-vegetarian (some dairy products), ovo-vegetarian (some egg products), or vegan (made without dairy or meat products).

                          5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Cookbook.......2007-10-01

This is probably the best cookbook I've every purchased. Eating vegetarian will never be dull or difficult again. After flipping through the book and trying many of the recipes over the past week I am full of ideas and can't wait to try all the new menu suggestions. Most of the recipes are not only vegetarian but also health conscious on a broader level - cooking methods, fiber, fat content, etc. This might be the only vegetarian cookbook you will ever need. I am not a true vegetarian but only have meat a few times a week so really appreciate all this book has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Really Great Resource for Vegetarians as well as Carnivores.......2007-05-14

I own several vegetarian cookbooks and this one is easily my favorite. Why? I can count on it! I know the recipes will turn out great and will call for natural ingredients that are good for my family. The cookbook is comprehensive, including a multitude of recipes as well as tips for stocking your pantry and for planning your menu. The author includes ethnic recipes such as "Szechuan Broccoli" and "Moroccan Vegetables with Couscous" as well as American comfort foods like "Three Cheese Macaroni and Cheese."

This book is a valuable resource for all types of cooks. It was even recognized as one of the best recipe collections when it was named a Julia Child Cookbook Award winner in 1997. I know I'll continue to use 1,000 Vegetarian Recipes in my kitchen for years to come.

                          5 out of 5 stars 1000 Vegetarian Recipes.......2006-09-11

This book is absolutely wonderful. Every recipe that I have made from it has been superior (particularly the quick bread and dessert recipes). I recommend this book highly to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Very different recipes and they taste delicious.......2006-03-10

I am pleasantly suprised by the wonderful recipes in this book. I have a collection of cookbooks and find with all of them that they have maybe a few which are good - THIS BOOK IS THE EXCEPTION - the recipes are easy, interesting and delicious. All the ingredients are easily available and the tastes are suited to most people.
If you have to buy only one vegetarian cookbook - make it this one.

5 out of 5 stars The best cookbook ever! .......2005-10-26

I have used this cookbook religiously for years and I have yet to find a bad recipe. The Tuscan Torta di Funghi e Patate (which we have shortened to just "fungi pie") is amazing. We are also big fans of the Sour Cream Pancakes which my son begs us to make every weekend. The recipes are very user friendly and you don't have to be a gourmet chef to get delectable results. We are not vegetarians but think we could be after experiencing the variety in this book. From the pastas to the pastries, this book has much to offer.
