A cross-section of Wimsey's career, but could've been better organized.......2006-07-17
For anyone new to Lord Peter, this book would not be an ideal introduction; the introductory material contains spoilers for the main text, and in any case the selection and order of the individual stories herein isn't ideal for a stem-to-stern readthrough. That said, I myself first made his lordship's acquaintance through STRONG POISON, the first story in this omnibus, and have yet to suffer by it. :) So while the book *could* be closer to perfect, the fact that it contains a triple dose of Lord Peter is sufficient to justify its existence, particularly since it will resist being worn to shreds longer than the individual paperbacks do.
Rather than discussing the individual novels in detail - each is still in print in its own right, and I recommend consulting their individual reviews - I'll discuss this omnibus edition in particular. Discussing them individually is a problem in any case, as the personal complications of STRONG POISON (the first entry) bear directly on HAVE HIS CARCASE (the second).
Often called ON THE CASE WITH LORD PETER WIMSEY, this omnibus edition of STRONG POISON (1930), HAVE HIS CARCASE (1932), and UNNATURAL DEATH (1927) contains not only the full text of each book - including individual tables of contents, author's notes, chapter headings, and the Dawson family tree for UNNATURAL DEATH - but is prefaced by the text of Lord Peter's entry in Who's Who / Burke's Peerage, complete with a partial drawing of the Wimsey coat of arms (the Saracen supporters are missing, but the motto and crest are there). The text of the entry contains a major spoiler for the later Wimsey novels, unfortunately, since it was taken from a post-1936 edition.
The book also contains a separate "Biographical Note, communicated by Paul Austin Delagardie", which dates from 1935, the same year as GAUDY NIGHT. Mr. Delagardie, brother of the Dowager Duchess of Denver, explains how he took charge of his nephew's social education as a youngster only to watch him suffer a disastrous engagement and cruel breakup at the time of the Great War. The fallout was far worse than the "I took up sleuthing as a cure for wounded feelings" patter that Lord Peter himself usually serves up on this topic. However, I warn new readers that as Uncle Paul was writing five years after the events of STRONG POISON, his information can better be appreciated after reading the first two novels in this omnibus.
ON THE CASE WITH LORD PETER WIMSEY has no overlap with its sibling omnibus THREE COMPLETE LORD PETER WIMSEY NOVELS (WHOSE BODY?, MURDER MUST ADVERTISE, and GAUDY NIGHT). Taken together, the grouping of the stories in these two volumes annoyed me very much when they first came out, since GAUDY NIGHT logically should be in the volume before you as the third story, completing the trilogy of Wimsey/Vane courtship novels. As an alternative, swapping the positions of UNNATURAL DEATH and MURDER MUST ADVERTISE would've made sense, as it is the novel following HAVE HIS CARCASE. Even putting UNNATURAL DEATH first rather than last in this book would help, since an associate of Lord Peter's who is introduced in UNNATURAL DEATH has a significant role in STRONG POISON.
Not to put too fine a point on it, the two omnibi naturally go together, and can be a godsend to those seeking to replace disintegrating paperback copies of the individual books. However, anyone wishing to follow Lord Peter's career from the beginning will need to skip back and forth between the two omnibi, with forays into other Wimsey books not included in either collection.
A very good collection, thanks to the excellence of the ingredients, qualified by minor perfectionist grumbling as stated above. Well worth getting and keeping.
Book Description
One of the founding mothers of mystery, Dorothy Sayers first introduced the popular character Lord Peter Wimsey in 1923 with the publication of Whose Body? Over the next twenty years, more novels and short stories about the aristocratic amateur sleuth appeared, each one as cunningly written as the next. Now in single volume, here are all the Lord Peter Wimsey stories, a treasure for any mystery lover. From "The Fantastic Horror of the Cat in the Bag" to "The Image in the Mirror" and "Talboys," this collection is Lord Peter at his best -- and a true testament to the art of detective fiction.

Lord Peter's Incomplete Stories.......2007-10-07
This product is misrepresented as the complete Lord Peter Wimsey Stories. This it is not! I originally bought it thinking it was a series of volumes including the full length novels of Lord Peter. It is in fact The Complete Short Stories .......
Having said all this it is worth having as it collects all the short stories in one volume. If you like Dorothy Sayers you will like these not so short stories which include some fascinating plots.
really good book.......2007-04-12
I love Peter Wimsey! The book was in great shape, it came quickly and I love it!
Wimsey Lite is Wimsey Good. .......2007-02-08
The creation of Dorothy Sayers in the first half of the 20th century, Lord Peter Wimsey rightly occupies a place of honor alongside Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes as one of the finest detectives in the murder mystery genre, in the traditional British mould. But whereas Holmes was principally renowned for his short stories, Wimsey is best known from Sayers' superb novels like "Clouds of Witness", "Murder Must Advertise", and "The Nine Tailors", and it is with these full-length stories that those unfamiliar with Wimsey should probably begin. But Wimsey fans will not want to miss an opportunity to meet the characters from his world that they've grown to love and appreciate make an appearance in the form of short stories. Sayers wrote several short story collections, and although they arguably lack the drama of the novel-length narratives, her sharp wit, terse style, articulate vocabulary, and wonderful characters are all evident. Her skill with wordplay is already evident in the deliciously verbose titles like "The Entertaining Episode of the Article in Question", "The Undignified Melodrama of the Bone of Contention", and "The Piscatorial Farce of the Stolen Stomach," all of which give clever details of the contents of each story.
This volume is comprehensive in reproducing all 21 Wimsey short stories, including the previously unpublished Talboys. Certainly there are some delightful stories among them. My favorite half-a-dozen or so stories include:
"The Unprincipled Affair of the Practical Joker" - Wimsey uses some sleight of hand to manipulate a game at cards, in order to blackmail a thief into returning stolen jewelry and a scandalous photograph.
"The Bibulous Business of a Matter of Taste" - On behalf of the government, Wimsey is commissioned to purchase a secret formula, but when two Lord Peters show up at the estate of the scientist concerned, Wimsey's skill in wine-tasting is necessary to uncover the imposter.
"The Adventurous Exploit of the Cave of Ali Baba" - Wimsey infiltrates a criminal organization of thieves in order to bring to justice the mastermind behind the secret society.
"The Image in the Mirror" - Wimsey is consulted by a man who suspects he is mad, since either he or someone identical to him is committing atrocious crimes. A mysterious tale with a doppelganger motif!
"The Incredible Elopement of Lord Peter Wimsey" - Wimsey again plays magician, this time in a remote and primitive community, to rescue a woman from being mistreated by her vengeful husband.
"In the Teeth of Evidence" - A short and immensely satisfying tale where Wimsey unravels the peculiar events leading to the death of a dentist who apparently died after his car caught fire in his garage.
"Striding Folly" - Can Wimsey solve the mystery surrounding the death of Mellilow's neighbour and chess-partner, Creech, when Mellilow's alibi is an unconvincing story about a complete stranger who played chess with him that evening instead of with Creech?
If the taste of these stories leaves you begging for more, you might next want to read "The Abominable History of the Man with Copper Fingers", "The Fantastic Horror of the Cat in the Bag", and "The Piscatorial Farce of the Stolen Stomach." The remaining stories are not as good, but might still prove rewarding and satisfying to the dedicated Wimsey fan. It has to be conceded that for those unfamiliar with Wimsey, it could take considerable effort to appreciate Wimsey-Lite, and given their brevity, many of these stories lack the complexity and satisfying twists of a typical Sayers murder mystery. But for Lord Peter Wimsey enthusiasts, the short stories of Wimsey-Lite are still thoroughly enjoyable! - GODLY GADFLY
A Delightfully Mysterious Book.......2006-11-10
The Lord Peter Wimsey stories are very imaginative. They show off Dorothy Sayers' knowledge of liturature and keep a nice sense of humour throughout. As a fan of Agatha Christie, I keep a critical eye on mysteries in general and I found these to be clever and interesting with conclusions that are not always wild but can keep the mystery-reader interested. Sayers does not succumb to the temptation to make her mysteries impossible-to-solve for the reader, but succeeds in throwing in some surprises.
Lord Peter and friends come out to play.......2006-03-10
For fans of LORD PETER novels the greatest problem has been that Sayers wrote so few novels. Fortunately she did write quite a few short stories which are all in this volume. We are treated to 21 more adventures with Peter, Bunter and many of his friends including Inspector Parker, the Dowager Duchess. Most of the stories are gems, particular personal favorites are: 'The Learned Adventure of the Dragon's Head' - featuring Peter's nephew; 'The Haunted Policeman' and 'Talboys' - both focusing on Peter's married life.
In addition to the mysteries themselves, challenging little puzzles complete with the wry humor found in the novels, fans of the series are given little glimpses into the other stories. Various situations and names that will appear in other works pop up giving devotees of the series a treasure hunt for repeated reads.
Book Description
Gathered here for the first time in one volume are all the short stories by the legendary mystery writer Dorothy L. Sayers. In this beguiling collection, Sayers conveys in her incomparable way the gruesome, the grotesque, and the bewitching.
Here is the inimitable aristocrat, Lord Peter Wimsey, one of fiction's most popular detectives of all time, up to his usual exploits as he solves tantalizing puzzles, as only he can. And then there's the clever working-class salesman-sleuth, Montague Egg, who uses his everyday smarts to solve the cases that baffle the professionals.
A sumptuous feast of criminal doings and undoings, Dorothy L. Sayers: The Complete Stories is a mystery lover's treasure trove of the amusing and appalling things that happen on the way to the gallows.

Still (mostly) relevant, definitely worthwhile!.......2007-04-27
Similar to another reviewer, my introduction to Sayers' works was through The Mind of the Maker. I tried to pick up her fiction at the time, but, as a 19yo college student, just couldn't get "into" it. Now that 15 years have added appreciation beyond standard quick-read bestseller-type mystery books, I recently thought I'd try Sayers again, starting with this book. I was very pleasantly satisfied with the book. As each section, with stories centering around its own investigator, came to an end, I found myself wanting more. Satisfied-but-wanting-more is a good place for an author to leave a reader, in my opinion.
Sayers is witty and clever, trusting her readers to think for themselves, causing them to dig and think a bit for most of the answers, instead of just laying it out. She's also decidedly English, which may be off-putting to some American readers, but in my opinion, only adds to the interest and charm.
I found almost all of the mysteries to be relevant, even in this era of CSI and Criminal Minds. Humanity and humor transcends innovation. It's rather like Jane Austen's novels are still worth a read, even though all her characters travel by horse, and we now use cars.
A Pleasing Introduction to Mysteries and Sayers.......2006-06-02
I'm not a huge fan of mysteries; however, Sayers' writing in other fields, such as _The Mind of the Maker_, her book on writing, made me interested in investigating some of her mysteries. I began here rather than try to figure out which of the novels to begin with, and found the stories interesting, entertaining, and thought provoking (not to mention disturbing, from time to time). I didn't manage to complete the book before I had to return it to the library but I'm going to pick up a copy as soon as I can to read the rest of the stories. Sayers' prose sparkles and her wit is top-notch. The stories are awfully short but I'm willing to accept that for the quality of writing that Sayers' provides. Anyone looking for an introduction to Sayers or to mysteries could do a lot worse than this: indeed, I highly recommend this collection of stories to anyone interested in either of those things, or possessed of a cerebral bent. I rarely had the patience to try to solve some of her puzzles but I imagine that there are those who could get quite a bit out of them.
Very dated.......2006-03-01
If you like short stories about a Sherlock Holmes type character, here you go. However the Sherlock Holmes stories are much better written and more in depth. Sayers stories are almost too "short and to the point". Not a rich read. After reading about half the book I quit. The stories are all so similar that I simply lost interest in reading any more of them. It might be a book more interesting to a ten year old.
Not Actually Complete - Preview the Table of Contents!.......2004-01-13
If you're reading this, you don't need to know that Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey series is great. You may want to know that this edition contains the same LPW stories as LORD PETER. Unfortunately, it doesn't contain THE WIMSEY PAPERS (BEING THE WAR-TIME LETTERS AND PAPERS OF THE WIMSEY FAMILY) published in THE SPECTATOR in weekly installments in 1939 and 1940. They're mentioned in Sandoe's intro. Perhaps Harper couldn't get the rights to print them.
This volume also doesn't contain THE WIMSEY FAMILY, highlights from the Wimsey family history written by C. W. Scott-Giles. Granted, it wasn't written by Sayers. However, it was published by Harper & Row and this "complete" edition was also published by Harper. Including THE WIMSEY FAMILY, which is OP and VHTF, would have made this edition a "must have" for LPW fans.
Great book for the armchair detective !.......2003-03-28
This one is a real gem ! It has one section devoted to non-Lord-Peter-Wimsey adventures and the stories are actually funny and have the most unexpected endings. Lots of fun to read and guess along. It also has the smart salesman, Montague Egg, running around in another section solving crimes. On the whole, a varied experience.

not only is the book a great adventure, full of biblical analagy and dark humour, it's an opportunity to explore the unique relationship between Azhrarn and his daughter, with an ending that even made a twisted ... like me blub. steal, borrow and beg for this book.
The Flat Earth comes of age..........1999-01-19
The "Flat Earth" series as a whole is definitely my all-time desert island pick. I've never read anything as incredibly beautiful and magical as these books, and I read a LOT. This book has all of the lush eroticism, shimmering enchantment, and fey loveliness of the previous two books, told in the same intricate, lapidary prose, and adds the powerful themes of growth and change. _Delirium's Mistress_ is the story of Sovaz (at first), the offspring of that union between Azhrarn the Prince of Demons and the priestess Dunizel which was a major part of _Delusion's Master_. Throughout this book, there is a sense of the weight of the ages that have passed on the Flat Earth. Much of the action is the result of long-past intrigues of the various Lords of Darkness. Shades of the past appear to advise characters at key junctures. The book begins with the love affair between Chuz, Prince Madness, and Sovaz/Azhriaz/Atmeh, which is quickly interrupted by the revenge Azhrarn takes as a result ov Chuz's actions in _Delusion's Master_. The remainder of the book concerns the heroine's search for her true self- is she Sovaz, the child of Dunizel, the Moon's Soul and embodiment of good? Is she Azhriaz, the merciless, all-powerful daughter of wicked Azhrarn? Or is she something more? Azhriaz's journey of self-discovery also becomes a force for the transformation of other characters. By the book's end, Azhrarn has been forever changed by the love of Dunizel and her daughter. The cruel Zhirek of _Death's Master_ is reborn as a gentle healer and teacher through his association with Azhriaz. And a much-mellowed Chuz is eventually reunited with his beloved, who finally knows who she is and what she must do. This is a truly wonderful book... it continues all of the exotic magic and mystery of the first two books, and adds some real wisdom and humanity, too.
mind boggling enchantment, the ultimate fairy tale.......1999-01-05
Tannith Lee takes us back to the flat earth to continue her tale with Azriaz, the prince of demons daughter. her fated love of chuz, the demon of wickedness and her inner light from her mother, dunizel, make this book incredible in both its narrative and descriptions. Tannith Lee is a master of words and takes you so deep into her world you may never be able to leave.

Book Description
Whether it's a pastrami on rye or a bagel with a schmear, America's Great Delis, by Sheryll Bellman, explores the history and recipes of the country's most beloved delis. From New York's Lower East Side to Detroit and all points west, the delicatessen remains a quintessential part of the American landscape. In New York, as in much of America, lunch is synonymous with deli. Perfected in the early twentieth century by Eastern European Jewish immigrants, the deli, short for delicatessen, quickly won our hearts and stomachs!
From Barney Greengrass "The Sturgeon King" to Katz's Deli, with their beloved slogan "Send a Salami to Your Boy in the Army," and the renowned Carnegie Deli, celebrity hotspot for generations, America's Great Delis is the authoritative answer to all your noshing needs.
Vintage photographs, menus, and signs complement the mouth-watering recipes made famous in delis across the country. Matzo ball soup, classic coleslaw, and cheesecake are just a few of the classic made-to-order tastes included for deli aficionados everywhere.
Features: More than one hundred nostalgic deli photographs, historical food and deli details, and a guide to "deli speak." Recipes including Ben's Kosher Noodle Kugel, Zingerman's Hamentaschen, Ratner's Potato Pancakes, Nate `n Al's Corned Beef Hash, and many more. Famous delis such as 2nd Avenue Deli, Ratner's, and The Stage Deli in New York, and Canter's and Langers in Los Angeles, among others across the country.
Customer Reviews:
A bad tourist guide of a little new york.......2007-04-09
The author tries to show some knowledge of the delis in New York focusing in only certain aspects that for the majority of the people are not important.
The book gives less information than any serious (Zagat) tourist guide of the Big Apple.
History, travelogue, and cookbook all rolled into one.......2006-04-18
This book is a combination history, travelogue, and cookbook all rolled into one.
From a history standpoint Ms. Bellman goes back to describe how many of the classic deli foods were invented. In 1610, for instance, bagels were created in Krakow, Poland and given as gifts to women after childbirth.
As a travelogue, whe has visited and describes a few dozen deli's from around the country. As you would expect, New York gets the most coverage. After all NYC has the most deli's. But also included are delis up and down the east coast, through the mid-west and on to Los Angeles.
As a cookbook, many of these deli's have givern her recipies of their most famous foods. Carnegie deli (near Carnegie Hall) is well known for its cheesecake and its Matzo Ball soup. Recipies for both of these are given here.
Ms Bellman rightfully laments the closing of many deli's, not only in New York but around the country. I suppose the traditional deli just can't compete with the fast food places.
All in all, this is kind of a nostalgia book, but one taht makes your mouth water.
A powerful visual treat blends with culinary history and some fine deli standard recipes.......2006-04-03
For an outstanding blend of history and recipes you won't want to miss America's Great Delis: Recipes And Traditions From Coast To Coast, deserving of ongoing mention as standing out from the crowd of recipes-only deli cookbooks to add an extra dash of history and vintage photos to the mix. Both black and white and color photos embellish discussions of the origins of classic deli foods around the world, from Matzo Ball Soup to Potato Latkes. A powerful visual treat blends with culinary history and some fine deli standard recipes.
I'M GETTING HUNGRY JUST READING IT!.......2006-02-14
Oddly, while deli food is considered one of the great American traditions, it's roots are steeped in our invaluable immigrant ancestors. Honestly what's better than a great corn beef sandwich or a steaming bowl of matzo bowl soup? America's Great Delis takes a fond look at these hallowed halls of dining pleasure in a book that is part tribute, part history, and part cookbook and all a pleasure to read.
Author Sheryll Bellman begins the book by taking a look at the history of deli food including a timeline of events that includes the first known preserving of cucumbers in 2000 BCE, to the origination of the Frankfurter in Germany in the 1400's...from the opening of the Manischewitz bakery in 1888 to the opening of the famous Carnegie Deli in 1937. Next is a brief history of various deli foods such as bagels, Challah bread, corned beef, Matzo ball soup, blintzes, and of course the Reuben Sandwhich.
Ahh...but all that is just the garnish on this heaping plate of gastronomic delights. The meat of the book is a whirlwind tour of some of the oldest, and most famous delis in the country. This includes a bit of history of each as well as some of their most famous, signature recipes. While it's heavily New York influenced, there are recipes included from delis around the country. There's the chicken soup and matzo balls from the 2nd Avenue Deli, cheesecake from Carnegie Deli, Borscht from Katz's deli and Cheese Blintzes from the Stage Deli. Moving outside New York City you'll find a recipe for the German potato salad from Shapiro's in Indianapolis, the pastrami sandwich from Zingerman's in Ann Arbor, beef brisket from Canter's in Los Angeles, and the egg custard from Rose's in Portand, Oregon.
Now you'll know why so many of these establishments were frequented by Hollywood's elite over the years. With some 75 recipes and nostalgic photographs this book is a must-have for lovers of deli or great American foods.
