Customer Reviews:
A cross-section of Wimsey's career, but could've been better organized.......2006-07-17
For anyone new to Lord Peter, this book would not be an ideal introduction; the introductory material contains spoilers for the main text, and in any case the selection and order of the individual stories herein isn't ideal for a stem-to-stern readthrough. That said, I myself first made his lordship's acquaintance through STRONG POISON, the first story in this omnibus, and have yet to suffer by it. :) So while the book *could* be closer to perfect, the fact that it contains a triple dose of Lord Peter is sufficient to justify its existence, particularly since it will resist being worn to shreds longer than the individual paperbacks do.
Rather than discussing the individual novels in detail - each is still in print in its own right, and I recommend consulting their individual reviews - I'll discuss this omnibus edition in particular. Discussing them individually is a problem in any case, as the personal complications of STRONG POISON (the first entry) bear directly on HAVE HIS CARCASE (the second).
Often called ON THE CASE WITH LORD PETER WIMSEY, this omnibus edition of STRONG POISON (1930), HAVE HIS CARCASE (1932), and UNNATURAL DEATH (1927) contains not only the full text of each book - including individual tables of contents, author's notes, chapter headings, and the Dawson family tree for UNNATURAL DEATH - but is prefaced by the text of Lord Peter's entry in Who's Who / Burke's Peerage, complete with a partial drawing of the Wimsey coat of arms (the Saracen supporters are missing, but the motto and crest are there). The text of the entry contains a major spoiler for the later Wimsey novels, unfortunately, since it was taken from a post-1936 edition.
The book also contains a separate "Biographical Note, communicated by Paul Austin Delagardie", which dates from 1935, the same year as GAUDY NIGHT. Mr. Delagardie, brother of the Dowager Duchess of Denver, explains how he took charge of his nephew's social education as a youngster only to watch him suffer a disastrous engagement and cruel breakup at the time of the Great War. The fallout was far worse than the "I took up sleuthing as a cure for wounded feelings" patter that Lord Peter himself usually serves up on this topic. However, I warn new readers that as Uncle Paul was writing five years after the events of STRONG POISON, his information can better be appreciated after reading the first two novels in this omnibus.
ON THE CASE WITH LORD PETER WIMSEY has no overlap with its sibling omnibus THREE COMPLETE LORD PETER WIMSEY NOVELS (WHOSE BODY?, MURDER MUST ADVERTISE, and GAUDY NIGHT). Taken together, the grouping of the stories in these two volumes annoyed me very much when they first came out, since GAUDY NIGHT logically should be in the volume before you as the third story, completing the trilogy of Wimsey/Vane courtship novels. As an alternative, swapping the positions of UNNATURAL DEATH and MURDER MUST ADVERTISE would've made sense, as it is the novel following HAVE HIS CARCASE. Even putting UNNATURAL DEATH first rather than last in this book would help, since an associate of Lord Peter's who is introduced in UNNATURAL DEATH has a significant role in STRONG POISON.
Not to put too fine a point on it, the two omnibi naturally go together, and can be a godsend to those seeking to replace disintegrating paperback copies of the individual books. However, anyone wishing to follow Lord Peter's career from the beginning will need to skip back and forth between the two omnibi, with forays into other Wimsey books not included in either collection.
A very good collection, thanks to the excellence of the ingredients, qualified by minor perfectionist grumbling as stated above. Well worth getting and keeping.

Book Description
Mystery novelist Harriet Vane knew all about poisons, and when her fiancÉ died in the manner prescribed in one of her books, a jury of her peers had a hangman's noose in mind. But Lord Peter Wimsey was determined to find her innocent--as determined as he was to make her his wife.

Guilty Until Proven Innocent.......2007-06-22
Dorothy L. Sayers created perhaps one of the most iconic of all detectives when she fashioned Lord Peter Wimsey. At first impression, Wimsey seems to be a lot of piffle, dressed to the nines, and overly confident in his intelligence. Yet there is something intriguing about his character and his buffonery that makes readers laugh at his expressions and marvel at his exploits. Such is the case with "Strong Poison", the book that introduced Lord Peter Wimsey to Harriet Vane.
The reader is immediately drawn into the story through a recounting of the evidence against Harriet Vane; she is on trail for murdering her lover with arsenic. The case against her seems airtight, and it isn't helpful that she was writing a mystery concerning arsenic poisoning, but Wimsey is convinced of her innocence, and is just as convinced of making her his wife. When the jury can come to no verdict, the defense has one month before Vane will be retried. Wimsey takes it upon himself, with a colorful cast of helpers, to make sure he clears Harriet's name and finds out who the real murderer is.
"Strong Poison" is a quick-paced read with ingenious plotting to the central mystery that is baffling to the readers. Although one can only handle so much of Lord Peter Wimsey at one time, the story clips along even with a wide array of characters and a plot that includes sleuthing, religious fanaticism, lessons in lock picking and spiritualistic shennanigans. All of these strange occurrences brew together to create a truly unique mystery. While Dorothy L. Sayers' writing can seem dated, since this novel was originally published in 1930 and the expressions that are used are not in modern usage, her stories have stood the test of time, and will continue to do so.
Lord Peter in love.......2007-02-19
It's nice to see Sayers's unflappable and delightfully conceited Wimsey suffer from the disabling effects of self-doubt in this one. As opposed to his traditional dilettante approach to crime solving, there is something on the line here. Wimsey's in love and his new found love is in line for the gallows. Sayers aristocrat superman has fallen for murder suspect, Harriet Vane, and he is in a race against time to find the actual killer and while the solving of the case is far too dependent on Wimsey's use of intermediaries, there is a satisfying conclusion and a more human Lord Peter for the reader's enjoyment.
Strong Poison.......2006-11-10
No one knows more about poisons than crime fiction writer Harriet Vane, which makes her the natural suspect when someone feeds ex-lover Philip Boyes arsenic. Enter Lord Peter Wimsey, who sees Harriet for the first time standing in the dock and is instantly convinced of her innocence. The rest of Dorothy L. Sayers' Strong Poison is spent in convincing the rest of us.
The sixth of the Wimsey novels and the first of four to feature Harriet, this tale is a classic in the crime fiction genre, both for the mystery itself (I will never forget hunting up a copy of A Shropshire Lad so I could figure out how Lord Peter figured it out) and for the beginning of the rich, complicated relationship between Peter and Harriet. The minor characters (Miss Climpson, the Duchess, Blindfold Bill Rumm) are only added seduction, as is the peek over their shoulders of the all but forgotten years between World Wars. In order, the Wimsey-Vane novels are Strong Poison, Have His Carcase, Gaudy Night, and Busman's Honeymoon.
Peter meets Harriet - but still not one of Sayers's best books.......2006-08-31
This was the first Peter Wimsey mystery that I didn't find totally satisfying. I had really high hopes; I couldn't wait to find out how Peter and Harriet met, and why Peter fell in love with her.
It starts off promisingly enough - the judge is summarizing the case against Harriet for the jury, who are about to start their deliberations. It's a pretty strong case; Harriet's former lover died of arsenic poisoning, and Harriet had been buying arsenic for research purposes.
Now, first of all, it was really easy to figure out who the real murderer was. Normally Sayers keeps me guessing much longer than she did here.
Second of all, Peter does almost nothing from beginning to end. Miss Climpson and her staff do all the actual detecting - Peter mostly flops around feeling a little useless because love for Harriet has impaired his judgement.
Third of all, Peter is already in love with Harriet as the book begins. Not only do we not see him actually falling in love, the first thing he ever says to her is to ask her to marry him. This is romantic and all, but what makes Peter and Harriet's relationship so magical to me, at least, is their repartee - they're so well matched in wit, sensibility, and principle. I thought something more mature than love at first sight would bring them together.
There's a little bit of a twist - but I guessed it around the same time as I guessed the murderer, which is to say pretty early on.
I still enjoyed Strong Poison, quite a bit, but Sayers has done better.
Passionate, suspenseful and riveting!.......2006-07-01
Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey is one of the most enjoyable detective characters of the genre. Set in the 1920's, this English mystery series portrays Lord Peter as a highly intelligent, intuitive amateur sleuth. He has many other talents: he is an accomplished pianist, a collector of antiquarian books, cricketeer (a star when he was in school), has a charming and self-deprecating manner and it is hinted at throughout the series that he is accomplished at love-making having had several quite satisfied mistresses.
In this installment, Lord Peter meets the woman of his dreams. She is on trial for murder and he must find out who committed the crime in order for her to be set free. He commences courting her in prison and is in emotional turmoil due to his fears he will not be able to solve this crime.
Lord Peter's object of affection, Harriet Vane, is a very interesting woman--a modern woman who is independent and has been leading a non-traditional lifestyle. She is unconventionally beautiful with an unusually deep voice and writes detective novels. A nice addition to the series.
Making Lord Peter have a personal stake in solving the crime, rather than just an intellectual exercise, created a nice tension in this novel. This happened before when Lord Peter's brother was on trial for murder. Lord Peter is known for his calm under stress and in this case seeing him as an agonized lover added to the suspense as well as increasing the attraction of the Lord Peter character.
Book Description
Mystery writer Harriet Vane’s murder trial is the talk of London, and naturally, Lord Peter Wimsey is fascinated by the case. He’s not convinced she poisoned her fiancé in the same way she offed one of the characters in her books, but is it because the case against her is weak, or because he’s fallen in love with her? Thus begins one of the most complex romantic relationships in mystery fiction.

Lord Peter and Harriet Vane.......2005-03-31
These four stories are the series of encounters focusing on the relationship of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. There is a later novel "Thrones, Dominations" that was finished for Dorothy L. Sayers (posthumously.)
In the first novel "Strong Poison" Lord Peter discovers Harriet while she is on trial for the poisoning of her lover. Naturally Lord Peter knows she is innocent and sets out sleuthing to prove it. Can he prove it in time? All the clues are there and you have an opportunity to beat him to the conclusion. Let's see how good you are.
In the second novel "Have His Carcase" Harriet is on a walking tour and comes upon a body on the beach. If she did not have her camera with her there would be no proof as high tide is coming in. and without a carcass the coroner can not sit. Lord peter steps in to help with the mystery of if it was murder, the "who and how and why" it was done. This story may include Bolsheviks and coconut fiber. Mean time Lord Peter is still perusing Harriet.
In the third novel "Gaudy Night" Which is more of a joyous night or a school reunion. Mysterious threatening notes and acts have been happening at the all-female Shrewsbury College at Oxford, from where Harriet graduated. Because of her reputation she is invited to the Gaudy and at the same time implored to seek out the source. Soon the threats are also addressed to her. Once again Lord Peter hears of this and lends a hand in the investigation. We get to meet his nephew and also learn more of Lord Peter's background and relationship with Bunter his man servant. And Lord Peter is still perusing the aloof Harriet. Will she ever give in?
In the forth novel "Busman's Honeymoon" Finally Harriet gives in and they are married. As a wedding present Lord Peter gives Lady Harriet the house where she was raised. Looks like it is not without its mysteries as one again a body is found in the basement. Again we are presented with sufficient clues to beat Lord Peter to the conclusion. However by the time you get to this novel you will realize that the murder mysteries are all secondary to the true story with is the relationship of Lord Peter and Harriet.

Book Description
BILL - the perfect Starship Trooper: big, brawny, and brainwashed. Possessor of two right arms (impressive when it comes to saluting) and a foot that is threatening to turn into something more suited to being an umbrella stand than anything that could be squeezed into a size 11 sneaker.
BILL - a perfect recruit for the good ship Bounty, bound for the Chinger war and carrying a cargo of as nice a company of homicidal misfits and maniacs as you could wish to meet outside of a penitentiary asylum (which is where they've just come from).
BILL, THE GALACTIC HERO - he's back, he's bad and about to meet the most hideous alien lifeform of his entire career. He'd do anything to save his skin without rocking the boat - but mutiny? On the Bounty?

One of the best Bill books out there.......2003-01-19
This is easily my favorite Bill book, and most of my friends put it high up on their list too. I think anyone would have a good time reading it.
What do people see in this book?.......2001-03-21
I'll be honest. I thought this book was crap. I bought it at a used book store because I thought it would be humorous and fun. It was humorous and fun, but Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat books were about ten times better while retaining the fun part. The characters were one-dimensional, the plot was merely an uninspiring parody of "Aliens," and the action was rather boring. It's a book for young people and readers who want a bit of mind candy.
Nothing quite like a Galactic hero.......1999-02-19
I must say that this being the first Bill bookI ever read, it was what got me hooked. A few things like the stone foot, and the elephant foot sprout weren't all that clear in the beginning because the stone foot's from the previous book, and then there's the two inch fangs and a black arm on the wrong side (but all that was explained in the first book which is another CLASSIC....well, except the foot thing) But after starting it I couldn't put it down. Harrison's unique and often farcical style is what makes this book a keeper. Many of the funniest things were small simple plays on words. Anyway, if you find yourself a copy of this book, GIVE IT TO ME! It's impossible to find, I got it from the library and it was gone the next time I looked for it, NEVER LET GO OF BILL BOOKS! EVER! I loaned volume 1 to my friend and I never got it back! >:- (
Bill is the best hero ever!.......1998-10-29
The book is a spoof on the alien movies, and is the best Bill the Galactic Hero book I have ever read. Harry Harrison does an excellent job in writing this funny yet suspensful book. A masterpiece of science fiction and comedy all rolled into one book. Don't start this book at night if you have to get up in the morning.
Bill The Greatest Galactic Hero Ever!.......1998-07-13
Bill the galactic hero is one of the geatest comedy action scifi characters of All time. His bizaare antics and his clumsyness are both so entertaining and suspenseful. I think bill should get his own movie soon.

since religiously following this plan everyone says i look 10 years younger. thank you dr. m
not the book I was looking for.......2007-06-12
This book offers only a few pages about the effects of sugar in the human body -- not enough to inspire me to give it up. I had confused this with a book full of case studies where people throw away their prescriptions and pills and do just great after purging their diet of processed foods, chemicals and (darn it) sugar. This book is full of recipes I've not tried yet (make salmon a staple of my diet? I'm not there yet.) I didn't even try to figure out which body type I am (and which diet would best suit me: high protein, low fat, high carb, etc) because the questions require us to be so extremely observant and aware of what we eat and how it affects us. If I were already that good, I wouldn't need the book. This Dr Mercola book might be good for someone else but for me it wasn't what I was looking for.
Good Information.......2007-06-11
This book gives lots of good information about what kind of foods not to eat. I read this book and combined the information I learned fron it with other books I have read to formulate my own health plan. One of the things that has made the most difference to me is cutting down the amount of sugar I eat to about 5% of what it used to be. I usually go all week without any sugar, and cheat a little on the weekend, but this is what gets me by. I am also glad that I learned about the foods that have alot of hidden sugar in them, like corn and potatoes. Another book that I highly recommend is Neanderthin by Tom Audette. Using the information that I gleaned from these two books, I have lost over fifty pounds in the last eight months, and I am in the best shape of my life. I am 6'2 185 pounds and I am still dropping fat. When people ask when I am going to stop dieting, I tell them I'll stop loosing weight whenever my body finds it's own equilibrium, but I'm never going back to my old way of eating. I am sure that when my body has shed itself of all the unnecessary fat it has been lugging around, then my weight will stabilize.
Hard to digest.......2007-05-21
I enjoy Dr. Mercola's newsletters, but this book was a bit disappointing. I thought it would let me know what to eat, etc. but I have to figure that out for myself by taking a quick quiz. Many of the questions were hard to answer, and every time I took the test, what kind of foods I should eat changed. (whether I should be on a protein, carbohydrate, or combination diet) Then he stated you really needed to take a more extensive online test to REALLY tell--of course it was costly. As I sayed before, it was disappointing. Glad I didn't spend very much on the book.

another W-S winner.......2007-09-03
although i find a lot of williams-sonoma cookbooks to be a little thin, they always pack gorgeous photos with recipes you can usually trust. this is no exception. i made a double portion of penne a la vodka, without having tried it out previously, for a potluck yesterday. rave reviews! definitely a keeper.
Great recipes, nice photographs.......2006-07-27
The recipes in this book are very good, and this book is a great place to start if you don't know many pasta recipes yet. It covers many classic dishes, so several of the recipes are not unique to this book. Each of the dishes is nicely photographed.
Good Recipes and Basic Info...........2006-03-19
This is an excellent book for the home chef. It has recipies that even the most timid beginner can sucessfuly (and effortlessly) complete.
It is beautifully photographed. The recipes are concise and easy to follow.
I love the informative sidenotes that accompany each recipe. A beginning cook can learn a lot from reading them.
I recommend this book for all cooks.
Wonderful recipes.......2005-10-23
This book has great pasta recipes. The fettuccine alfredo is too good for words. This book keeps in line with the series -- well-written recipes, beautiful photos of every dish.
The pasta basics section has good advice on fresh pasta. I wish it would have included info on making it with a food processor. I think that's covered in the new Mastering series from WS, which is billed as more technique than recipe.
Excellent cookbook.......2003-02-10
When I first received this book I pretty much read it from cover to cover. It's a delight. Each recipe has a corresponding full-page photo. Further, a pertinent, and what I found to be enlightening, piece of information is included as a sidenote with each recipe. I wrote down 11 recipes that I plan to try -- more typically two, maybe three, is the number of recipes that I will make from any one cookbook. Anyhow, I have made the bolognese sauce w/ fresh egg pasta and it was excellent. The entire family loved it! The sections are well thought out and can be used as a guide to what you need. Want something fast? Quick Suppers. Something tried & true? the Classics. There were several terrific sounding recipes under Elegant Entertaining. Great to look at, fun to read, and well-chosen recipes. It's a keeper.

Williams-Sonoma Collection: Italian.......2007-01-10
I was very happy with the "Florence" edition, so I thought I'd try this one; Boy, was I not disappointed! The first dish I tried was the Braised pork-loin with prunes, and I added the pesto lingune with green beans and potatoes, I subsituted the prunes with pears, and the meal came out fantastic. I've eaten in Italian resturants in Beverly Hills and the recipes in this book rival them. Follow the book exactly and you won't be sorry.
Williams-sonoma Collection - unbeatable!.......2006-02-17
The Williams-Sonoma Collection is fantastic. I am slowly trying to complete the collection and always find meal times a pleasure now to try new recipes. Every dish that I follow from the books are always superb and I get a lot of compliments on my dishes. Easy to follow and tasty!
