Chicago policeman Abe Lieberman, beleaguered friend and family man, is vexed with enough tsuris to put him off his blintz- and bagel-impoverished diet. For one thing, there's the confession of a murder that didn't happen made by a man who thinks he's talking to a rabbi when he makes it. Then there's a gang of delinquents who might be responsible for the deaths of a couple of floaters that turn up in Abe's territory. And if that's not enough, Abe's partner, an Irishman engaged to a Chinese woman who's the object of an Asian crime boss's affection, wants him to be best man at his wedding. Throw in a grandson's bar mitzvah that threatens to bankrupt him and an unruly synagogue board, and you've got the ingredients of a typical, warmhearted cozy that won't raise your bubbe's blood pressure but is nonetheless a likable diversion. --Jane Adams
Book Description
An Abe Lieberman mysteryAbe Lieberman is a strong, sympathetic character, an Everyman whose love for his family is only matched by his quiet, zealous commitment to justice. "A figure out of Talmudic lore-endearing, wise in his crotchets, weary with his wisdom," says The Washington Post. He loves what he does, but it takes its toll as his commitment to what is right is sorely tested every day on the mean streets of Chicago. As a moral man, he is sometimes faced with some uncomfortable ethical choices in order to see that justice-rather than the letter of the law-is meted out. And in Not Quite Kosher, the latest Abe Lieberman mystery by veteran Edgar Award-winning Stuart Kaminsky, our hangdog sleuth is up to his eyeballs in tsurris, the kind of trouble that will drive a man to madness. From tracking a pair of low-rent thieves who stumble into a heist way over their heads to finding out what happened to a man who predicted his own death in a bizarre twist of fate, not to mention planning for a grandson's bar mitzvah that threatens to send him to the poorhouse, Lieberman will do much to find a way to make everything right, even if it takes years off his life. And his Irish partner, Bill Hanrahn, the Priest to Lieberman's Rabbi, is in trouble of his own making. For the woman he loves is the object of affection of one of the kingpins of the Asian crime syndicate in Chicago and the notion of this woman marrying anyone from a different culture is anathema. How far will he go to win the woman he loves? And at what cost?Just another day in the lives of a pair of Chicago's most amiably odd detective team . . .

Not Quite Up to Previous Volumes in the Series.......2006-11-01
Once again we get involved more with the personal lives of the Rabbi (Abe Lieberman) and Father Murphy (Bill Hanrahan). Abe is busy worrying about his cholesterol (and the diet that Bess has him on) and the cost of the Bar Mitzvah of his grandson Barry. Bill is getting ready to marry Iris even though both her father and the local chinese mafia don (Mr. Woo) would rather they waited.
The series is starting to show Kaminsky's lack of concentration when he finds he has to repeat some stories in every book whether it has to do with Hanrahan's drink and divorce or Abe's daughter's problems with her ex or her children. The books are down to the level of two hour telemovies on Lifetime.
The quality of the stories and the involvements of the mysteries or police procedures are on the level of CSI, which is another series he is working on but without the glamour. He has mentioned mulitple times, in the last two books, how tired Abe is because of his insomnia...but it seems that Kaminsky is writing these books in his sleep. He would be better off letting Abe retire and resurrect the Rostnikov series with Porfiry's son (Josef) and his girlfriend (Elena Timofeyeva).
Entertaining........2005-08-15
I enjoyed the off-beat writing style as a nice change from my usual authors. Characters were fairly interesting Jewish stereotypes but the story, whilst temporarily entertaining, was eminently forgettable.
Eminently diverting police procedural.......2004-06-12
The series about veteran Chicago cop Abe Lieberman is the least known of the at least four mystery series being written by the prolific and consistent Mr Kaminsky and this is a pity for they are always diverting and at times touch deeper wells than is often the case with the genre .I suspect there is much of the author in the Lieberman figure -Abe is a well wrought character whose job has exposed him to the seamier side of life in general and Chicago in particular but has not eroded his compassion and sympathy for the victims ,who often include his fellow law enforecement professionals .
Here Abe is working on two cases -a robbery of a jewellery store and the death of its proprietor during the hold up ; and the murder of a Arnold Sokol which may well be gang related .These crimes in turn lead on to other deaths
The criminals are accorded almost as much time as the cops and the portrait of the robber Wychovski in particular is a mini-masterpiece of economicallly but crisply drawen characterisation while the ethnic divisions of the city are unfussily and powerfully established
Abe is a family man and time devoted to this aspect of his situation is for me a partial problem as I struggled with some of the Jewish background to the discussions but its a minor problem (others will not see it as such )
Compassionate , humane and a quick read which unlike many such does not insult the intelligence or detarct from its having some sharp points to make
To those new to the series I suggest starting with an earlier title , maybe Lieberman's Choice
Yet another masterpiece of misleadingly "easy" fiction........2004-04-16
I wrote a long review of The Big Silence---most of what was said there is relevant here. The mystery plots are top notch. The characters are rivalled only by R. Hill's Pascoe-Dalzeil charcters, but Kaminsky is less playful, intent on entertaining, but even more concerned that if you want to spend the time you can learn about the details and textures of life that matter (and inevitably illuminate you and your life). Read his novels, particularly, the Russian novels and Lieberman novels and spend some time with an author who is surely the Doestesfeski (sp) of mystery novels--don't be fooled by the ease of reading--in fact slow down and reflect on all the impt themes of life that Kaminsky presents for your consideration. ONly complaint: Abe is just too "sharp," knows too may people, makes too few mistakes---write at least one more Lieberman novel and give him a couple of deep flaws that will blend bumpily, but smoothly with Abe's skilled detective and people problems-- he needs a touch of larceny to penetrate his soul, create conflict and perhaps bring him down a peg or two (ala his partner, his boss Kearney, his daughter). Too good, sometimes grating. Still a GREAT READ. Also, try Midnight Pass (Fonesca novel) for another genre consumeing, genre transforming, genre transcending novel with the imperfect main character we need in our crime fiction.
Fast and Easy.......2003-03-07
Yes, this is a "fast and easy" read, but that is not a negative
comment. Author Kaminsky has the ability to create and project
characters of vastly different sensibilities and backgrounds, and
he always writes stories that move quickly and with ease.
Det. Abe Lieberman is an old-time Chicago cop who has almost
seen too much crime and too many characters, but he is determined to stay on the job and do his best to see that justice
is done. Even when doing justice means doing business with
some felons while pursuing others.
Here, a robbery gone terribly wrong, when a low-level criminal
of marginal ability trips and shoots a cooperating merchant,
leads Lieberman and his Irish partner into a series of false
confessions, low-lifes at each others throats, and sad commentaries on marriage and relationshiips.
We also get to learn a little more about Jewish traditions than
many readers will enjoy, but these heros are likeable people
who do good, and they keep working on their professional duties
while handling personal difficulties.
Although this is a fast and easy read, it is also enjoyable and
fun.
Book Description
MERIDIAN is the story of Sephie, a sheltered young girl whose life resembles nothing so much as a fairy tale. The beloved only child of the Minister of Meridian, she grows up with an entire floating city as her playground. Then her father dies, and she inherits a sigil imbued with the power to create. So does her wicked Uncle Ilahn, except that his powers are bent on destruction and domination. Suddenly Sephie finds herself at the center of a power struggle, and quickly she learns that there is more than love in the world. Kidnapped to the world of Calador, Sephie's journey home to Meridian puts her in the path of many people good and bad that help her grow up and counter Ilahn's plans to take over her world.

For younger readers, slow-paceed but very good.......2005-08-13
This is CrossGen's girl comic (comic intended for girls), and it is closest to non violent comic for young readers.
You got intro in other reviews, and , although I am Sandman and Maxx fan, I must admit this is my fave CrossGen after Mystic. It is pity if nobody publishes Meridian comics which followed four published trades as trades five six and so...
Adventure.......2004-03-02
My friend has read it and she said it was really good. I have skimmed through it and look forward to reading it.When I first looked at the book I thought it was amazing. The illustrations are wonderful with their vibrant colors and their sharp details. It is really interesting because it is part comic book and part chapter book. I was excited because here you can get all four of them and in other places you can't. The cahracters are really cool because they each have their own style and personality. I like the names too like Sephie. The names of the places in the book are really cool too like Meridian and Carador. This book is enjoyed by a lot of people.
Great little read.......2003-07-25
This book is a great little read! Crossgen is doing wonders trying to bring new and old readers back to comics. The artwork and storytelling are both done fabulously. I've been looking for a comic that doesn't fit the traditional superhero mould but also has great artwork and story, it's arrived with Meridian.
CrossGen genius........2003-05-16
I know this can only be considered a book by very thin circumstances (ie it has a front and back cover and several pages in between) but it had to get some mention. I myself am not really a comicbook kind of guy. Yeah, I do have ambitions to someday have my own online comic but that's more to fuel my lust for being able to draw. I love to draw and someday I hope to draw well.
Anyway, I found this book while stocking the anime shelves up at Waldenbooks. I opened it up and was instantly impressed with the quality of the artwork. I took a look at it and said "Someday I want to draw like this!" So I bought it. What I found after I bought the book was an original setting fired up by quite a compelling story.
Now what really appealed to me is this isn't an action comic like we associate comics with. Yes, there are a few scenes with fighting in them but in general it's a very politico book which is right up my alley. I'm a sucker for politics. Not our politics but I love to read books in which the characters are driven by politics. I hate black and white circumstances and politics are never as such. They're always grey and that's what appeals to me.
All and all I give then book 4 out of 5 stars. Fantastic artwork, intriguing story, likeable characters. I could've gotten a 5 except I think the rushed the beginning too much. I would've liked to have gotten a little more background on some of the main characters and their ties to the other characters.
Worth a Read and not THAT cliched.......2003-03-25
This is the most hyped story of the entire CrossGen Universe.
I'll get the bad news out of the way first. At times, the pacing is a little slow, and the story is somewhat predictable. And there are other CrossGen titles that are a more enjoyable read than Meridian (Sojourn, Route 666, and Negation come to mind).
That being said, it's still a CrossGen book, and right now, very few companies are turning out such consistently great material. The artwork (which does have the feel of an animated Disney feature) is beautiful, and really brings the characters to life. And this story, like most all of the CrossGen stories, is character-driven, which is really what makes a story great. If you enjoy comics and you enjoy Disneyana, or if you just like plain old tales of Good Versus Evil, you will enjoy this series. The first volume is (obviously) a great jumping on point, so give it a read and see what you think.
And just to clarify the previous reviewer's point, there are definitely elements of this series that would remind one of the Disney movie Treasure Planet. However, we must keep in mind that this volume collects issues of a monthly comic that was realeased in 2000, well before Treasure Planet was released in theatres. So if anything, you could say Disney was "borrowing" from CrossGen in this case.

Loved it.......2003-06-06
Picked this up on a whim - hey, look, ten dollars! - and absolutely adored it. It very, very much fits the fantasy mold, as a plucky heroine must save her homeland from an evil uncle, but it goes through the motions with style and warmth. The efforts (though moderately faint as of this volume) of the publisher to tie in the narrative to other events in the publisher's "universe" (aka, crossover ahoy!) is a little more sketchy - I've never understood the comic book mentality to shun stand-alone works - but it doesn't hamper the story.
Beyond that, I really hope that other comic publishers follow this pricing model - ten bucks is absolutely ace. It's an absolute bargain and you'd be a fool to pass it up.
An excellent read.......2003-05-22
I saw this book in my local bookstore, and the front cover was already curved back from being read - it was brand new! so I gave it a whirl, and it's AMAZING.
this is the pocket-sized edition, and it's cheaper than the bigger version of the same graphic novel.
the story is that of sophie, a young girl who enjoys being free, who is placed into a very tough job as minister of meridian when her father is killed. It's truly an amazing storyline, and the artwork alone is worth ten times what you pay. The only reason not to buy this book is if you've already bought the bigger version.

Book Description
Nexus offers an engaging and insightful journey of an odd mix of people drawn together to a spiritual retreat to overcome personal pain. This book will please readers of spiritual, new age, inspirational, self-help and visionary fiction books. It weaves insights within the narrative like The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield and The Peaceful Warrior series by Dan Millman.
Starting with a dramatic suicide scene through intimate details of the struggle of Logan Andrews with depression and despair, we are brought on a journey of inner struggle and personal transformation. The reader is transported to a spiritual retreat where the experiences of people at the retreat provide illuminating life lessons. The tone of book creates an authentic journey that is both exploratory and insightful.
The overriding theme in
Nexus is mystical in its nature, narrating experiences of deeper connection felt with one another and all of life. This is poignantly highlighted in key passages, including Logan's empathy for a dying fish in Chapter 6.
Customer Reviews:
Need for Spiritual Change.......2007-07-01
I've read many spiritual books and this one really spoke to me with a story that communicated about both the highs and lows of spiritual life through the touching journey of people at a retreat center. Each person in the story is dealing with their own sorrow from the depression-despair of Logan, Sarah's loss of direction and Muriel's desire to be comforted in her old age. Steven is fixated on his money-making schemes and in order for him to experience growth, he needs to connect to the path of love.
The story speaks of something deeper - a need for spiritual change. It isn't always stated on the surface and you have to dig deeper to recognize that as the central theme of this book. Yet you feel this impulse motivating the communication between teachers and students at the retreat center and the experiences there allude to a deeper bond - to the Nexus that connects us all through our heart where empathy and compassion can grow with experiences of our Oneness. The compassion Logan shows for a dying fish vividly captures this theme. This vision of non-duality is always there beneath the surface though our ego stands in the way of its realization.
The message in this book is beautiful and so I want others to know about it. Through spiritual books like this, we can delve into consciousness transformation and share it with others.
Really Bad. Don't Buy.......2007-06-30
I made the mistake of purchasing this book because it was referenced in a review for The Road (an amazing fiction currently on the best seller list). Now I realize I was probably led into buying it by one of the authors' friends or supporters. The 5 star reviews are bias, to say the least! The dialogue is beyond bad. It is stilted and at times downright silly. I love top quality spiritual writings like "The Power of Now" by E. Tolle or the writings of D. Chopra. It's not that I am spiritually closed, I just know very bad writing when I see it.
This "fiction" is an attempt to flesh out the spiritual teachings of the two authors through poorly crafted, one dimensional characters. I would rather drink flax oil and fast for a week to better my soul than read this kind of stuff. I anticipate receiving some unsupportive votes for this review, and these will likely come from the friends of the authors who have written the 5 star reviews. So be it. I'd rather be honest and save the potential Amazon customer some money!
Thought Provoking.......2007-05-30
NEXUS is an absorbing guide to the dazzling universe of spirituality! Written in the appealing genre of a new age novel I found NEXUS to be a remarkable psychological and spiritual adventure filled with mystery, enchantment, romance, insights, as well as being highly realistic in terms of life's joys and sorrows. I just couldn't put the book down!!!
The diverse assortment of characters were realistic, and the plot was deep, lively and fast paced throughout. NEXUS WORKED AT VERY DEEP LEVELS OF MY MIND TO PENETRATE MY SUBCONSCIOUS AND TO EXPAND AND INSPIRE MY SUPERCONSCIOUS MIND. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!!!
By carefully reading NEXUS and reflecting on the philosophical insights inherent throughout the book I found that I could tap into my deepest inner centre of being- my inner source of strength, wisdom and compassion...what a discovery!!!
I heard about NEXUS from a friend and that is why I bought the book. I told another friend about NEXUS but she had already just finished reading it and was most impressed.
It seems that people everywhere are suddenly experiencing an intense attraction to NEXUS, one of the most valuable books I've read in a long time.
Another new age novel that I highly recommend is The Saint, the Surfer, and the CEO: A Remarkable Story About Living Your Heart's Desires
Spiritually Uplifting.......2007-05-21
Every once in a while you come across a book that resonates at a deeper soulful level. "Nexus: A Neo Novel" is one of those books that touches you through a spiritual journey of transformation of people in the book. Their transformation is an inner one at the level of their heart and psyche.
For Logan Andrews the transformation requires that he move from negative thoughts and emotions to positive ones. This task is fraught with difficulties, since even at a spiritual retreat intended to help people find the centre of their being called the Nexus, Logan is confronted with his greatest loss as he meets his ex, Sarah.
I really liked the sub-plot with Steven, an arrogant millionaire, who at first is irritating but in time he grows on you and becomes an endearing person. Steven believes that money is the answer to life's problems but has he lost his way?
Even though the writers of "Nexus" have their own unique voice, still this book reminds me of other visionary writers like James Redfield, Carlos Castaneda and Dan Millman. I highly recommend "Nexus" as a deeply moving experience of personal transformation whose message spiritual readers will most appreciate.
Powerful Insights.......2007-04-23
The appeal of "Nexus" lies in an original story that is fast-paced and chock-full of powerful insights. This book is about transformation as an organic process.
The novel is unique as a collaborative effort by two authors who have successfully integrated their writing into an inspiring narrative. This book explores the ups and downs of spiritual life through the journey of people at a spiritual retreat and we can relate their experiences to our own life.
I love this book for its piercing insights and a memorable soulful journey. "Nexus" reminds me of books like "The Celestine Prophecy," "The Life of Pi" and "The Alchemist" - some other books that I've enjoyed reading.
Book Description
More than one hundred taste-tempting soul-food recipes.
From the grandson of Harlem's queen of soul food, Sylvia Woods, comes a new take on soul food-down-home cooking that tastes as good as the food you grew up with. Lindsey Williams knows soul food. He was raised in the kitchen of his grandmother's restaurant, Sylvia's, where he mastered the art of soul-food cooking. But being around all of that good food took its toll. When he tipped the scales at four hundred pounds, he knew he had to make some serious changes.
That's when he lost more than half his body weight and began his own brand of healthy soul-food cooking that's loved by the clients of his catering business. Now, with Neo Soul, we can all enjoy some guilt-free soul food.
Neo Soul features more than one hundred of Williams's delectable recipes, including Grandma's Roasted Turkey, Lenzo's Trout Stuffed with Collard Greens, Okra Gumbo, Neo Sweet Potato Pie, and Blueberry Buckle. They're all so good, you'll never miss the fat
Customer Reviews:
Neo Soul can offer Neo Hope for anyone struggling to manage lifestyle changes pertaining to food management .......2006-07-08
This book was very encouraging. I've eaten in Sylvia's Restaurants in Atlanta and New York and the food was GRRRRREAT!!!!!!! Being a Southerner I know the challenges of resisting good old down home stick to your ribs cooking! I love books like this one and Pattie LaBelle's Lite Cuisine because many of the recipes offer good options for making food that taste good and at the same time is good for you. I think that this book can stimulate the thought processes regarding changing how you prepare the standard recipes you typically eat at home. Most people cook a standard rotation of menus in their homes. Books like this make you think about healthy options and how to substitute ingredients for your meals at home.
Adds a healthy twist to a cuisine often associated with unhealthy fats.......2006-05-25
Other books have been written on soul food but here's something with a difference: it comes from the godson of Harlem's soul food cook Sylvia Woods and adds a healthy twist to a cuisine often associated with unhealthy fats. Author Lindsay Williams struggled with weight all his life and had to make some drastic changes when at 400 pounds he found food affecting his health. NEO SOUL reflects these changes, which caused him to lose more than half his weight, and provides readers with a new brand of healthy soul cooking which retains the ethnicity without the dangers.

Great Recipes.......2006-03-07
Lyndey Williams is a remarkable person who has come a long way. His journey from unhealthy and obese to fit and eating well is fantastic. His word is just as good as anybodies because he has been "there." I purchased two cookbooks, 1 for me and 1 for my mother. We tried numerous recipes and they turned out great. With these recipes you can substitute the high fat without substituting the great flavor. If you aren't looking for low fat try regular Syvlia's Soul Food in Harlem, hands down some of the greatest soul food available.
Neo soul review.......2006-02-28
Book gives good ideas but nothing new - recylced old ideas - the author gives too much personal information - good for him that he lost weight but enough already ~!
Great start, but check the conversions.......2006-02-03
I saw Lindsey Williams featured in Newsweek and I went immediately and bought this book for a friend of mine. She's been trying to find ways to lighten up her down-home cooking and I thought this was right up her alley.
We paged through the book together and checked out the recipes - which are fantastic. Mr. Williams' personal story was also a highlight, as were tidbits like celebrity favorites. My friend recognized familiar recipes immediately and was pleased her new cookbook.
Naturally, being health conscious, we looked at the nutritional information. That's when we started to get confused.
For one, the calorie and fat counts for some of the desserts were very high. I know - it's DESSERT! If the re-done version was still bad, I figured it must mean the "original" version must have been far worse. And I know you don't eat it all the time, anyway. But I've never seen a "light" cookbook feature a recipe with 4 sticks of butter in the ingredient list. As tempting as the pound cake sounds, I'm afraid it would be something I couldn't eat on my plan.
Secondly, I'm convinced that the nutritional counts are inaccurate. Some recipes had 40 or 50+ grams of fat in them - which is just astronomical for one serving. The calorie count would seem appropriate for a serving, but fat (and sometimes sodium) seemed like it might actually apply to the whole dish. There were so many great LIGHT recipes that we looked at, scanning the ingredient list only to find healthy ingredients but non-attractive nutritional counts. It didn't make sense.
It's such a good cookbook with really great re-mixes of traditional recipes. Even after the confusion, my friend still liked the book. I just wish I could pick Mr. Williams' brain over some of the recipes & techniques.........Why not reduce the amount of high-fat coconut in the coconut cake recipe? Why actually FRY the fried apples when there are other ways to cook them without 3 cups of oil? Do we really have to use 4 sticks of butter in the pound cake or is there a way we can sub out some calories? Why would chicken & peaches have 24g of fat?
Bottom line: the book has some fantastic recipes. I would just recommend for those who are nutritionally aware to do your own calculations (and maybe make a few more of your own substitutions) and I'm sure the numbers won't look so bad.

New High Altitude Cookbook.......2007-03-21
This has helped tremendously with learning how to cook at 3000 ft (the level our son's cabin is). Thanks.
Big disappointment.......2006-05-10
This book was a big disappointment. I'm sorry I bought it, and I'm not keeping it. HIGH ALTITUDE BAKING (Colorado Extension Service) and PIE IN THE SKY (Susan Purdy) cookbooks are much better.
Misleading.......2006-04-13
Maybe these recipes work in Denver? I now notice the positive review is from Seattle!!!
I have had no success with the baking recipes at 6,500 ft and higher, and havent tried them at lower altitudes. The other dishes I've tried did not produce inspired cuisine.
My copy is now available at the used bookstore.
Cookbook to fancy.......2004-02-05
I enjoy food but most of the recipes in this book are things I wouldn't eat in the first place.
7,000 feet.......2002-09-13
I tried the Popover recipe in this book. If you are at 7,000 feet like I am, this recipe won't work. I've tried it several times and still had the same disgusting result; it's also too salty for my liking.
