4 out of 5 stars A fast, funny read!.......2006-02-25

The Coronado Crew is back with another Page Turner (pun intended:) When a resident of the Coronado Tropic Apartments is arrested for the murder of a bottom feeding millionaire bookstore owner, it's up to this series' heroine, Helen, and her sassy, salty, and ever-so fascinating 80-something year-old landlady, Margery, to figure out who done it.

This is a laugh out loud funny novel that would make a perfect book to take on vacation or to make a daily passenger commute more enjoyable.

"Murder Between the Covers" is the second book in this series. The debut novel is "Shop till You Drop".

5 out of 5 stars Another great installment in this series...........2005-12-28

Helen has been working at a bookstore, which introduces a colorful cast of characters. As usual, mayhem begins, and Helen must solve the mystery to keep a friend from being accused of murder. If you haven't read this series, you should. I look forward to getting to know the secondary characters more. There are several that could have a storyline written around them.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Bookstore mayhem and murder.......2005-05-07

Once again Helen is working a dead-end job that allows her to be paid in cash under the table. She is hiding out from the law and her ex-husband.

This time she's working at Page Turners Bookstore. With her love of books, she thought this would be the perfect job. Wrong. Not only is the caliber of customers low, but her boss, Page Turner III, is the pits. Plus the stores appear to be on a downward spiral.

Her apartment complex, The Coronado Tropic Apartments, become infested with termites. The residents are all forced to move out for the weekend while the complex is tented and bombed.

Her landlady treats Helen to an enjoyable weekend at the beach. Her new boyfriend, Dr. Rich, comes to spend it with her.

But, when they return to the Coronado, they find Page Turner III dead with a knife in his back, on a bed in one of the apartments. How could this happen? Did anyone at the Coronado even know him? Plus, the apartments had been locked down and tented.

Suspects are not is short supply. Helen's friend Peggy is arrested. Apparently she had been engaged to Page some time before and had threatened him. Helen investigates to help get Peggy released. She feels Peggy knows something but won't tell her. Could it have been his wife, one of the female authors he took advantage of, or one of Helen's co-workers?

I really enjoy this series. Helen is a lot of fun, and the characters she works and lives with always add to the story. Fort Lauderdale is a terrific setting, too. There are plenty of twists and turns before the killer is revealed so that it is not easy to figure out who the killer is.

This series is a great cozy series. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars I Loved Murder Between the Covers.......2005-04-23

Elaine Viets came up with her series of dead-end jobs mysteries after working many dead-end jobs herself. The second in the series, MURDER BETWEEN THE COVERS just gets better. Helen is now in Ft. Lauderdale, FL working as a bookseller in Page Turners bookstore, which is the namesake of its owner, a cold, womanizing and selfish man. Helen is being paid cash since she is on the run from her ex-husband and the police after smashing the husband's car after finding him with the woman next door.

In comparison to Viets' first in this series, SHOP TILL YOU DROP, I was hooked from the beginning of this one and I thoroughly enjoyed Helen's part and her more confident role. I got lost in characters in the first book, but with this one, I felt that I got to know Helen much better as she works her way to finding the killer of Page Turner III. I absolutely loved the scenes with her landlady by the pool with Peggy's parrot at the Coronado Apartments. There is humor, some chilling mystery,
some romance and a whole lot of guessing on my part in MURDER BETWEEN THE COVERS. I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Deadly Diversion by Eleanor Sullivan.......2004-09-21

If you liked this book by Elaine Viets, you will love Eleanor Sullivan's Deadly Diversion.
From opening pages to last, Eleanor Sullivan has created suspense and intrigue in the critical care unit of St. Teresa's Hospital. Head nurse, Monica Everhardt, has her hands full with the usual crises of short staffing and managed care. But how to distinguish incompetence from murder challenges her best expert knowledge, setting her on a path of supense and discovery. You won't put this one down for a moment.

Book Description

“A superb collection, a splendid and much-needed book. Anderson has cleared away the dross and shown us the golden roots of fantasy before it became a genre.”
–Michael Moorcock, author of The Eternal Champion

Many of today’s top names in fantasy acknowledge J.R.R. Tolkien as the author whose work inspired them to create their own epics. But which writers influenced Tolkien himself? In a collection destined to become a classic in its own right, internationally recognized Tolkien expert Douglas A. Anderson, editor of The Annotated Hobbit, has gathered the fiction of the many gifted authors who sparked Tolkien’s imagination. Included are Andrew Lang’s romantic swashbuckler “The Story of Sigurd,” which features magic rings and a ferocious dragon; an excerpt from E. A. Wyke-Smith’s The Marvelous Land of Snergs, about creatures who were precursors to Tolkien’s hobbits; and a never-before-published gem by David Lindsay, author of A Voyage to Arcturus, a novel that Tolkien praised highly both as a thriller and as a work of philosophy, religion, and morality.

In stories packed with magical journeys, conflicted heroes, and terrible beasts, this extraordinary volume is one that no fan of fantasy or Tolkien should be without. These tales just might inspire a new generation of creative writers.

Download Description

Once upon a time, fantasy writers were looked down upon by the literary mainstream as purveyors of mere escapism or, at best, bedtime tales fit only for children. Today fantasy novels stand atop the bestseller lists, while fantasy films smash box office records. Fantasy dominates the role-playing and computer gaming industries, and classic works in the genre are taught in schools and universities throughout the world. Credit for this amazing turnaround belongs to one man more than any other: John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, the beloved author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Terry Brooks. David Eddings. George R. R. Martin. Robin Hobb. The top names in modern fantasy all acknowledge J. R. R. Tolkien as their role model, the author whose work inspired them to create their own epics. But what writers influenced Tolkien himself? Here, internationally recognized Tolkien expert Douglas A. Anderson has gathered the fiction of authors who sparked Tolkien's imagination in a collection destined to become a classic in its own right.

In "The Golden Key," the inspiration for Tolkien's short story "Smith of Wootton Major," George Macdonald tells the tale of a boy whose quest for the end of the rainbow leads beyond the borders of the world. Andrew Lang's romantic swashbuckler, "The Story of Sigurd," features magic rings, an enchanted sword, and a brave hero loved by two beautiful women -- and cursed by a ferocious dragon. Tolkien read E. A. Wyke-Smith's "The Marvelous Land of Snergs" to his children, delighting in these charming tales of a pixieish people "only slightly taller than the average table." Creatures with a fondness for human flesh are featured in Lord Dunsany's "The Hoard of the Gibbelins," in which Alderic, a knight, sets out to rob the evil, man-eating Gibbelins of their fabled treasure-trove. Also appearing in this collection is a never-before-published gem by David Lindsay, author of Voyage to Arcturus, a novel which Tolkien praised highly both as a thriller and as a work of philosophy, religion, and morals.

In stories packed with magical journeys, conflicted heroes, and terrible beasts, this extraordinary volume is one that no fan of fantasy or Tolkien should be without. These tales just might inspire a new generation of creative writers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great fantasy from the good old days.......2003-12-21

Once upon a time, the fantasy field wasn't covered with identikit tract housing trilogies as it is today. Its tales were unique, idiosyncratic, homely dwellings. In the wake of Tolkien's rise to popularity in the 1960s, various enterprising editors, like local historians, have put together reprint collections of fantasy as-it-was.

"Tales Before Tolkien" has the special value for the Tolkien reader of putting the stories in a Tolkienian context. Some of them are stories he read himself; some handle themes he was later to make his own; some just illustrate the breadth of the field he worked in. All this is explained in succinct headnotes.

Anderson derives the high-fantasy tradition from Germanic kunstmaerchen (literary fairy-tales): Tieck, MacDonald, Buchan, Stevens, and Merritt are in that tradition: each portrays the longing for Faerie, often in ways strikingly reminiscent of Tolkien. Stockton and Nesbit have humorous tales of Faerie coming to us (as Tolkien did in his poem "The Dragon's Visit"); Knatchbull-Hugessen, Lindsay, and Wyke-Smith give original but traditional-style children's fairy tales; Lang and the two Morrises explore the cold northern realms in stark somber tales; Haggard, Housman and Baum take the epic fantasy principles to further-off lands; Hodgson and Machen apply the mysteires of fantasy to modern times (as does Buchan), as in Tolkien's "Sauron Defeated"; Wright tells a purely historical story of his imaginary realm of Islandia, as Tolkien wrote of Numenor; Cabell, Garnett, and Dunsany are snide and satirical about quests and religion - very unlike Tolkien, but he's known to have read and appreciated Dunsany's story.

As Tolkien is to today's fantasists - the giant in whose footsteps they tread - the writers in this book are to Tolkien: the ones who inspired and showed him the way. The formal prose, the elaborate frame stories, the treatment as wondrous of what modern fantasy readers may take for granted, the condensed quality of short fiction telling epic tales, may take a modern reader by surprise. But I urge you to read these stories with care and sympathy. These authors, more than many of Tolkien's followers, are saying the same things he is. To appreciate them is to understand what Tolkien wanted you to get out of his books.

5 out of 5 stars A Nice Collection of Early Fantasies.......2003-10-06

Tales Before Tolkien is a nice collection of fantasy tales dating from the period just before Tolkien's birth to just before he began publishing his own works. Some of the stories, like Puss-cat Mew, Tolkien actually acknowledged having read and enjoyed as a youth. Others are not actually mentioned by Tolkien but possibly had an influence on him, while still others were probably not read by him but are indicative of the state of fantasy at the time he was active. None of these stories really measure up to Tolkien's standards (but then, what does?) but many are quite interesting and enjoyable to read. Each story has a brief sidebar giving some details about the author, and there is more information in a suggested reading section at the back. This is a very nice look at the state of fantasy writing just before Tolkien broke new ground.

3 out of 5 stars some tastey tidbits.......2003-09-11

This collection of tales has a couple of real gems ("The Elves" and "The Dragon Tamers") for people looking for sources of Tolkien's ideas, and a number of ones we've all read before ("The Story of Sigurd"). As a whole, I think the collection is a bit misleading because Anderson admits in his introduction that some of the tales don't really have any connection to Tolkien at all, they are just included to show you what was being written in the field of fantasy around the turn of the century. I would rather he excluded those and just concentrated on the ones that Tolkien either said he had read or that he very likely did read. That gripe aside, the book is very well designed and presented. I liked the brief "sidebar" that opens each tale, but would have preferred a bit more depth there.

5 out of 5 stars Fairy Tales and Other Fantasies.......2003-09-06

Tales Before Tolkien is an anthology of fairy tales and other fantasy stories published prior to Tolkien's works. Some of these authors are known to have influenced Tolkien, but all wrote on themes which Tolkien would probably have admired. All the authors were chosen to be at least five years older than Tolkien.

"The Elves" by Ludwig Tieck is a "literary fairy tale" in the German tradition and illustrates the dangers of visiting with fairies. "The Golden Key" by George MacDonald is a mystical tale of a boy and a girl who embark on a lifelong quest. "Puss-Cat Mew" by E. H. Knatchbull-Hugessen is a story of a young man and a cat against evil ogres and dwarves. "The Griffin and the Minor Canon" by Frank R. Stockton is a yarn about the friendship between a clergy man and a monster. "The Demon Pope" by Richard Garnett is a tongue in cheek story of Satan and the Sacred College.

"The Story of Sigurd" retold by Andrew Lang is an abbreviated version of the Nibelungenlied. "The Folk of the Mountain Door" by William Morris is a mystical tale of a god and goddess attending a naming rite in a Norse-like kingdom. "Black Heart and White Heart" by H. Rider Haggard is a story of an English gentleman who tries to steal the lover of a Zulu warrior. "The Dragon Tamers" by E. Nesbit describes the trials of a poor dragon who is always outwitted by one family. "The Far Islands" by John Buchan tells of a boy whose family is obsessed by the Western Isle. "The Drawn Arrow" by Clemence Housman is a story of the gratitude of kings. "The Enchanted Buffalo" by L. Frank Baum is a yarn about treachery and revenge in the Royal Tribe of buffalo. "Chu-bu and Sheemish" by Lord Dunsany is a fable about jealous gods. "The Baumhoff Explosive" by William Hope Hodgson is a cautionary tale about becoming too much like Christ.

"The Regent of the North" by Kenneth Morris is a tale about a Viking who will not forswear his religion for Christianity. "The Coming of the Terror" by Arthur Machen is a suspense story about frightening events in England during World War I. "The Elf Trap" by Francis Stevens relates the strange experiences of a Professor of Biology who meets a beautiful young lady in the back woods. "The Thin Queen of Elfhame" by James Branch Cabell is the story of a man who unintentionally finds true love. "The Woman of the Wood" by A. Merritt discloses the murderous actions of a man who loved a coppice. "Golithos the Ogre" by E. A. Wyke-Smith tells of the vegetarian ogre who has two plump children as house guests. "The Story of Alwina" by Austin Tappan Wright is an excerpt about the history of Queen Alwina of Islandia. "A Christmas Play" by David Lindsay recounts the efforts of the fairy Emerald to find husbands for three sisters when there are only two princes available.

These stories are representative of the fantastic short stories written prior to Tolkien. While several are fairy tales, others come from a wide variety of cultural myths. Many of the authors are well known today, but others are known only to the students of literature. In any case, these stories are worth reading just for the pleasure of it and, if such reading gives us any insight into Tolkien's works, so much the better.

Since these stories span a broad spectrum of treatments, I liked several more the others; some I didn't much like on first reading. Since each presents its own emphasis and mood, however, I suspect that my list would differ upon subsequent readings in other circumstances. Moreover, other readers will probably find themselves liking stories that I didn't much enjoy.

Highly recommended to Tolkien fans and anyone else who enjoys short works of fantasy.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting anthology.......2003-09-03

JRR Tolkien is considered by many to be the father of modern fantasy though he often referred to the classic Beowulf. This collection looks at twenty-two stories that may have influenced him in his creation of hose adorable Hobbits. The selections were based on the premises that the tales were published before any Middle Earth story and that the author was born at least five years before Mr. Tolkien. Several were written in the nineteenth century, but were chosen because Mr. Tolkien makes reference to them in his letters or commentaries.

Although not for everyone as the contributions in many cases feel a bit dated, this anthology is a fun collection. Notables are included such as Frank Stockton, Lewis Carroll, H. Rider Haggard, and L. Frank Baum, etc. Besides those curious of the genre's heritage, generalists will appreciate the tales as for the most part they are well written and worth the look back though where is the most influential, Beowulf?

5 out of 5 stars Best low carb cookbook.......2007-09-15

This is my "go to" cookbook and believe me I have a lot of them! I have been a lo-carber for 8 years. This book has easy to find ingredients and easy recipes. It is a must have for any low carb dieter. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

2 out of 5 stars Fast isn't always better.......2007-08-11

A lot of the recipes in this book are too simple and the food turns out bland. The 500 Low Carb Recipes book is much better.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of money . . . .......2007-06-30

Many of these "recipes" shouldn't even be considered recipes. For example, "The only 15 minute wings I could figure out" consists of chicken wings and sprinkle-on seasoning of your choice. The "Tortilla pizza" consists of a tortilla, pizza sauce, and cheese. Are you kidding me?!? Also, there are entire chapters devoted to burgers and eggs. Instead, consider Agatston's The South Beach Diet Quick & Easy Cookbook --not quite as quick and easy (or insulting), but much more interesting!

5 out of 5 stars Low carb for life and loving this book.......2007-01-29

I sucessfully did low carb in 1999 and lost all the weight I needed o and then in 2003 after birth of my daughter decided to go Low CArb for life as a lifestyle not a short term weigh reduction technique.
ANd I absolutely love this book!!! I have actually made many many recipes from this book as well as Dana's other books...versus many other cookbook low carb and regular where I have only made 1 or 2 things. The recipes are more simple than her regular cookbook and that is perfect sometimes I just need a good idea when I can't think of anything to cook for lunch or dinner quickly.
I enjoy trying more involved recipes with more specialized ingredents for special meals weekends or company. Any special ingreadents called for in the books I have been able to locate at Kroger, Walmart or for a few items my local health food store. Keep it up Dana many of us Low Carb for Lifers are still out there

I was very pleased with this cook book. The recipes are easy to read and understand and everything I've tried so far has been great! I would recommend this to anyone who's trying to keep their daily intake of carbs to a minimum but would still like to enjoy what they're eating.

5 out of 5 stars Save Time and Sanity... while making your family and tastebuds happy!.......2007-01-29

Hooray once again for Dana Carpender! These are really delicious and fast to prepare, as advertised. You won't need a lot of crazy ingredients. There's usually something I can make from my pantry and freezer, and my husband has been enthusiastic about each recipe we've tried.

For each recipe, she gives you the counts on total carbs, fiber, and net carbs, as well as grams of protein. She doesn't give you the fat grams, but most of the recipes seem to use moderation in the use of oils and fats. There also aren't a lot of artificial sweetners in her recipes; just a tsp of Splenda here and there as needed.

You get 13 chapters of 15-minute recipes: Eggs, Tortilla Tricks (low-carb tortillas, of course), Burgers (no buns of course), Poultry, Fish and Seafood, Steaks and Chops, Main Dish Salads, Skillet Suppers, Slow Cooker Meals, Side Dishes, Soups; Condiments, Sauces, Dressings, and Seasonings, and Desserts.

Her burger recipes are really juicy and awesome. They always make my husband happy. Her Main Dish Salads are really creative and range from things you would serve to company, like Italian Roast Beef Salad, Satay Salad, and a lovely crab and avocado number, to things people will be happy about in packed lunches, like Egg Salad Francaise, Curried Tuna Salad, and a cottage cheese/tuna concoction that is actually very tasty and can be whipped up in 5 minutes flat!

I also like the Skillet Suppers, which include a ground beef skillet with the flavor of stuffed cabbage, a couple of asian-flavored creations, chicken alfredo, farm fry, Spanish "Rice" and Fried "Rice" (where "Rice" equals cauliflower).

The meat, poultry, and seafood sections are pretty much what you'd expect, but the flavors are awesome, and she really does keep it under 15 minutes.

In the dessert section, she has some sumptuous creamy coffee drinks and some things to do with fruit, along with carb counts for servings of various fruits.

I need to explore the condiments section further, because it looks like there's some gold in those hills, too.

I love how many vegetables we're eating with this cookbook! In fact, these recipes could get your kids eating more veggies, too. She gives you hints about serving the recipes to your carb-loving family, too, such as noting where brown rice (or her delicious Cauli-rice) would be a good addition.

    5 out of 5 stars beautiful book.......2007-05-29

The pictures are worth the price of the book. It shows Italian cuisine for what it really is, rustic simplicity. Highly recommeded.

5 out of 5 stars the beauty of regional Italian cuisine .......2007-03-16

This oversized book is full of beautiful photographs. Each recipe is accompanied by a large color photograph, as well as its region of origin and Italian and English names. Italian cuisine is explored by region, with spectacular photos and an engaging essay on the cuisine of each of the following regions: il Nord-Ovest, il Nord-Est, il Centro, il Sud, e le Grandi Isole. This is a cookbook not only to use in the kitchen, but also to peruse for an enjoyable view of Italian landscapes and a taste of Italian culinary history and regional cuisine.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Italian Cookbook.......2006-11-05

While in Italy this summer, we found this cookbook in the country home where we were staying. Not only did it have interesting history about the different regions of Italy, it had recipes for foods from all regions, and for all courses. The recipes were not particularly difficult, and were so distinctively Italian. I have several cookbooks featuring Italian recipes, but this one IS Italian! Fortunately, the markets in italy were able to provide all the ingredients we needed. When we returned, I ordered the book both for its beauty and for its different recipes. It is always a treat to select a recipe, prepare it, and then best of all, enjoy it! Brings back many memories of our wonderful summer.

5 out of 5 stars Part Cookbook, part photographic travel journal, all good!.......2006-05-08

A serious student of cooking that has been perfecting her skills over the last 25 years writes this review. I have traveled to Italy multiple times, and have spent the last 10 years perfecting my Italian cooking skills. This book is part of my collection of cookbooks that now exceed 500. I am a tough critic on Italian cookbooks. However, this book is worthy is a good review.

This book is part photographic essay of Italian food and travel and part cookbook. The author writes a brief history of each region's food history in the chapters about the various regions. In the regional descriptions she tells you about the terrain of the area, the basic diet, and the various dishes that are classic to the regions.

The book is subdivided as follows:
    1. Nord-Ovest: Lombardi, Piemonte, Val d'Aosta, Liguria (Region 1)
    2. Antipasti: Appetizers
    3. Nord-Est: Veneto, Fruili-Venezia Guilia, Trentino-Alto Adige (Region 2)
    4. Primi: First courses
    5. Centro: Toscana, Lazio, Umbria, Marche, Emilia-Romagna (Region 3)
    6. Secondi: Main Courses
    7. Sud: Campania, Abruzzi, Molise, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria (Region 4)
    8. Verdure: Vegetables
    9. Grandi Isole: Sicilia and Sardegna (Region 5)
    10. Dolci: Desserts

The recipes are all authentic, and very succinctly written. The directions are easy to follow. Some of the recipes (stuffed pastas) are a little advanced for the average cook. However, with patience and practice all of them are possible. Most (approx. 90%) of the recipes have photographs of the finished dishes included in the book.

The book is well constructed, the spine is stiff and heavy, and the paper stock is thick and glossy.

If you love Italy, or Italy food and/or cooking this is a beautiful book to add to your library.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic recipes AND photographs of Italy.......2006-02-25

This book is all you may need to not only prepare fantastic regional dishes but at the same time experience the sheer beauty of Italy almost as if you're there. A must for anyone who is serious about creating wonderful Italian meals. The photographs alone are worth the price of the book!

5 out of 5 stars If it's good enough for the De' Medicis.............2007-03-13

I received this book as a gift when the Frances Mayes Tuscany book (ugh!)was all rage. I flipped through it thinking "what a dumb format for a coobook" then slipped it into a bookshelf where it lay buried for a couple of years. I did however remember seeing in it (& liking the idea of) a recipe for "Elder Flower Flat Bread" (p.34) and I had an elderberry shrub in bloom so I dragged the book out, plucked the 1/2 cup of elderflowers and made the bread. It was good. I started actually looking at the photographs and then read through it. I kinda liked it. Then, to go on an antipasti (as Lorenza suggested) I made the "Stuffed Eggs with Tarragon" (p.35). Big hit! I tried, like an earlier reviewer, the "Chickpea Flat Bread"(p.45) Big-gloppy -mess- disaster! But, Lorenza had my attention with her great commentary on the culinary regions of Tuscany and the food styling is so irresistable and appetizing I forged on. Also VERY LOVING photographs of Tuscany. I've tried: "Naked Ravioli" (p78) Great! "Meatloaf of Arrezzo"(p.148 ) Nice suprise. "Fennel Cake" (p.242) Indispensible, I bake one a week! Light Apple Cake (p. 246) Delicious! So, long story short I really enjoy this book. The format is very large, rather absurd for the kitchen but I just slap it down on the counter, keep it open with a marble pestle and happily cook away.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Gift Book.......2007-01-16

A large, attractive book that I gave as a gift. Nice pictures of the food and the recipes looked interesting and not too difficult.

5 out of 5 stars Best In Many Ways.......2007-01-06

I received this book as a gift a few years ago and have used it often. The recipe's are imaginative, easy and always well recieved by family and guests. The recipe's ingredients are basic and credible. And of course, the presentation in this book is a knockout! The food, the scenery, the dishware. All top drawer.

    5 out of 5 stars Ah, Tuscany!.......2006-09-27

This is a book that lives up to its name in all respects. The color photos (250) are warmly, rustically lit. These carefully composed still lifes entice the earthier senses with taste and aroma and give the reader a yen for this beautiful region.

And the recipes, arranged by course, highlight regional dishes from the simple -- Chicken in Red Wine, Chestnut and Rice Soup to the unusual -- Salt Cod and Mint Soup, Spaghetti with Sea Urchin Sauce to the sublime -- Snails with Sausage and Tomato Sauce, Pheasant Broth, Ricotta Tart.

1 out of 5 stars for the coffee table, not the kitchen.......2006-01-10

I got this as a gift from my son, since I had just visited Tuscany last year and loved the food. I am an experienced gourmet cook. This book needed a test kitchen in the worst way. I tried two recipes: one for polenta (as basic as pasta) and a Garbanzo bean bread. The proportions for both were totally wrong. The polenta balled up in the pan, and the "flat bread" was like a soft egg dish. I checked in one of my favorite chef cookbooks (Sheila Lukins of Silver Palate fame) and the proportions were very different for the polenta. the other recipe couldn't find anywhere. I'm donating this one to the library for the Friends of the Library sale.

Italy Today, the Beautiful Cookbook is the third volume on Italian cooking to join the popular Beautiful series of large format, lavishly illustrated books from HarperCollins. It is more than just a pretty book to set on the coffee table; this is a book cooks will enjoy and one that makes good reading if you are planning a trip to Italy.

Fred Plotkin's text covers the history, economy, and particular ingredients important in each of Italy's culinary regions. He also explains how changes in the way Italians live are affecting how they eat. Meals, for example, now follow the traditional structure less rigidly in most parts of the country, with the southern areas holding closest to the old ways. Also, while cooking in Italy is still remarkably regional, people are enjoying recipes less tied to their locality. Use of fresh and local ingredients, however, remains strong.

The recipes are by Lorenza De' Medici, who also did the food for Italy, the Beautiful Cookbook and Tuscany, the Beautiful Cookbook. Here she offers 220 dishes. Some show how Italians are modifying classics; others illustrate the living quality of Italian cooking in its acceptance of new ingredients and in new ways of using familiar ones. Perfect examples of this are Eggplant with Yogurt and Mint and Rice Salad with Pesto. Beyond all the handsome photographs, this is a source cooks really can use.

      Book Description

First published in 1988, Italy the Beautiful Cookbook (200,000 copies sold) set the standard for exquisite presentation of Italy's authentic cuisine, combining recipes with scenic photography and details of each region. Now, nine years later, with worldwide interest in Italian food booming and a new Italian cuisine emerging, this new book has new power to satisfy the cook and traveler in us all.

With the accelerated pace of contemporary life, Italians have had to change their style of eating. This has created fresh ideas, quick approaches to the classics, rediscovered heritage dishes, and a more relaxed way of assembling menus. This new style is reflected in the more than 220 recipes culled from cooks throughout Italy. Emphasis is on light first courses and vegetable dishes; simply prepared fish, poultry and meats; and homemade breads, pizzas and desserts. Photographs of each region accompany these mouthwatering recipes. From the Alps to Sicily, from the fragrant herbs of Liguria to the pungent olives of Puglia, readers will delight in rediscovering the pleasures of this inspiring beloved country.

5 out of 5 stars La Cucina Italiana!.......2005-12-21

ITALY: THE BEAUTIFUL COOKBOOK is just that - a book brimming with known dishes and as well as rarities from throughout Italy presented in a format so well designed, filled with excellent photography, and thorough information about the country that it could rest as comfortably on the traveler's coffee table as in the gourmet's kitchen.

Lorenza De'Medici takes the reader on an insider's tour of Italy with readable maps, stunning photographs of each region, information about the peculiar characteristics of the regions that inform the recipes, and then gives some of the finest recipes you'll likely to encounter for dishes both simple and complex.

As with the best of cookbooks this one contains images that show how the result of the time spent in the kitchen will look. De'Medici writes with candor and in a relaxed inviting style. This survey of Italian culinary arts and the historic background that accompanies them is as fine as any similar book on the market. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

4 out of 5 stars Value for the money, but..........2004-12-04

... you have to pay a little less. These "Beautiful Cookbooks" are usually on sale at Borders store for $20 for 2 or $10 each. For that price, they are a real value. Beautiful to read through, pictures of every dish and some nice recipes too.

1 out of 5 stars Italy the incredibly plain food cookbook.......2004-07-14

This is AWFUL. Most of these recipes even the most beginning cook would know of or could simply figure out on their own - if they wanted bland food. Many if not most recipes are very few ingredients and fairly common sense. Chicken, rosemary, balsamic and oil. I didn't need a $50 cookbook to teach me that one - or any of them that would actually be tasty.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL and DELICIOUS!.......1999-08-26

I love to cook, love italian, and love this book. The beautiful photographs are very inspiring and the unique recipes are motivating!
