4 out of 5 stars Charming and Entertaining - Mrs. Pollifax on assignment in China!.......2006-08-06

This was the second Mrs. Pollifax novel I've read and I was not disappointed. If you're at all a fan of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple - I think you'll really enjoy Mrs. Pollifax. If you've never read Mrs. Pollifax - begin with the first in the series so that you understand how she came to be working for the US Goverment - that book is: The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax. This book, is charming overall. The author does an excellent job hiding the identity of Mrs. Pollifax' accomplice - and enemy - until the time is right for us to know. The suspense is very good. I love the small unfolding romances as well. My only complaint, if you can call it that, is that Mrs. Pollifax is able to resolve something tricky (I won't tell you which thing and ruin it for you - don't worry) by almost luck at one point - I would have prefered her to use her brains and resourcefulness more in some instances. But - it is a minor quibble - she's so charming - I'm eager to read more of the series! Hope you enjoy it too. :)

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Light Hearted Mystery.......2003-08-06

I really enjoyed Mrs. Pollifax and the China Station. For folks who don't know who Mrs. Pollifax is, she's a 'sweet little old lady' who just happens to work for the CIA and have a brown belt in Karate. The stories are always filled with adventure, suspense, and yet, are for the most part wholesome and 'cozy.'

In this installment, Mrs. Pollifax is sent to China disguised as a tourist, to help rescue a prisoner from a labor camp. Armed with very minimal information and a secret partner, Mrs. Pollifax and friends, must find a way to extricate Missing Mr. " X" from China, without getting arrested, detained or worse... Killed!

This was a great installment in the Mrs. P. series. Although some of the minor characters were irritating: i.e. Jenny, and 'perfect all-knowing' Iris, I liked seeing Mrs. Pollifax in action, and her interaction with her co-agent was amusing.

Definitely a must for Mrs. P. Fans.... A fun, light mystery sure to entertain just about everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Mrs. Pollifax in search of Mr. X.......2003-04-04

Mrs. Pollifax is thrilled when Mr. Carstairs, her boss at the CIA, gives her an assignment to China. As luck would have it, Mrs. P. has recently completed a course in Chinese history, so she is primed and ready to go. She joins a tour group and is told that one of the other group members is actually a CIA agent who will become her partner later on. She tries unsuccessfully to detect her future partner and is very surprised when the agent's identity is revealed. She sees a lot of interesting Chinese countryside and tries to get acquainted with other tour group members. Later in the book, she rides a runaway horse and encounters some rough stuff from a Russian spy. This book, as the others in the series, is charming, and a little romance adds some pizzazz to this one.

5 out of 5 stars Another Pollifax Page Turner!.......2001-07-04

Dorothy Gilman rarely ceases to amaze with her talent at keeping the pages turning. In "Mrs. Pollifax on the China Station," Gilman once again creates plausible situations that never fail to catch the reader off guard. Again it is nearly impossible to decide whom to trust. A very fun read!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite of them all!.......1999-10-15

I'm a big fan of the intrepid Mrs. Pollifax and especially enjoy this book. The intrigue, adventure and characters are wonderful and I find real involvement with the plot. Don't miss a chance to live the spying life vicariously through Emily Pollifax - especially the earlier novels which I have found are much better than her more recent additions!

5 out of 5 stars The unlikliest spy.......2007-06-07

It would be hard to imagine a more unlikely international spy and detective than the Emily Pollifax, garden club habitue, geranium raiser, suburban grandmother, and brown belt karate expert. But there you have it--and it all works just beautifully.

I've read about all of the Pollifax books, and so far this is the best. Mrs. Pollifax is contacted by her CIA superior and given the dangerous assignment of going to the Peoples Republic of China (during the Cold War) and rescuing a Chinese engineer who is in a remote-area labor camp/prison. In the tourist group with Mrs. Pollifax is another CIA agent, but Mrs. Pollifax is not told who he is. This secret is kept for about half the book.

The tour of China alone is quite good all by itself, especially when the tour group arrives at the Taklamakan Desert in western China. The other operative makes himself known to Mrs. Pollifax, and together they work to rescue the Chinese engineer--but not without great danger, a Soviet spy who intervenes because the USSR wants the engineer as well, and heroics on the part of the heroine. Miss Marple she is not, unless that spinster has learned to perform karate under extreme duress.

This book is satisfying on all counts: interesting plot, atmosphere, fine characterizations, and realistic dialogue. It is to be hoped that this book will remain in print for a long time.

4 out of 5 stars Blame game for the disaster??.......2004-08-25

I enjoyed reading this book by Howard Snyder which retells the story of the Wilcox Expedition to climb Mount McKinley during the summer of 1967. The climb was a total disaster as 7 out 12 climbers frozed to death, making it one of the worst climbing incidents in modern American mountaineering history.

The author was one of the five survivors and he retells his side of the story on how this disaster took place and why. In doing so, he appears to put a lot of blame on Joe Wilcox, the expedition leader for making poor decisions that directly and indirectly, led to the death of seven climbers under his leadership. Of course, he also cites the Park Service for forcing him and his two friends joined Wilcox's expedition since the Park Service had a "four man team" rule.

The story Snyder writes proves to be interesting, scary and quite numbing. It also cast Joe Wilcox as the main reason why the climb went bad. I think from Snyder's point of view, Wilcox was the captain of the ship and he's responsible for everything that goes on that ship (aka: expedition).

This proves to be an interesting read but you shouldn't read it without having Joe Wilcox's book, White Winds nearby. White Winds is Wilcox's response to Snyder's book.

I enjoyed this book greatly since it details America's worst mountain tragedy and is written before the lead climber's rebuttal in White Winds by wilcox

2 out of 5 stars Second Book a Major Let Down.......2006-05-19

The first book, Hall of the Mountain King, is worth the read. Vadin and Mirain are interesting, compelling characters with a good, solid dynamic that is interesting and engaging to read, if not exactly the most original thing ever written. Mirain claims to be the son of the dead heir of the Kingdom of Ianon and the sun god Avaryan, giving him the right to the throne. Vadin is pressed into his service by the king, completely unwilling. There's a lot to be said for Mirain's struggle for the throne, his growing relationship with Vadin, and Vadin's just a good, fun narrator. Not Book of the Year, but a solid read.

Then we got to The Lady of Han-Gilen. I suppose this 'Lady' thing should have been a hint. Vadin is no longer the narrator - in fact, he's out of the book completely before it's halfway over. Five pages into the new character Elian and her narrative, I was quite sick of her. Beautiful Princess, Talented Warrior, Perfect Lady! Is there anything she can't do? Hall of the Mountain King did not set me up for a painfully traditional, by the book romance. Vadin and Mirain's enthralling, bittersweet dynamic? Gone, to be replaced by the Red Headed Wonder. And you will hear about how very red headed she is, poetically and every other page. The biggest trial Elian seems to face is that she's torn between two soon to be emperors who love her madly. Never fear, though, she gets to chop off her hair and disguise herself as a boy so she can join her One True Love's army.

Elian is infuriatingly perfect; traits previously reserved for Mirain - who is the son of a god, I remind you - are snatched up. Anything anyone else can do, Elian can do better. And let's not forget her beautiful red hair, which should be a character in its own right. By the second chapter, I could have told you how the book was going to end, because there's very few places books like this go. A bad narrator and a simple plot make for a tedious, dull story.

I'm not looking forward to the third book anymore.

4 out of 5 stars not your cookie-cutter fantasy novel.......2004-09-17

Avaryan Rising combines the first three novels of Judith Tarr's series (The Hall of the Mountain King, The Lady of Han-Gilen, and A Fall of Princes). Having had no previous experience with the author, I picked up this book on an impulse in the book store. I'm glad to say that I was pleasantly surprised.

In my opinion, Tarr's strongest point by far is her skill in character creation and development. Anyone who reads a lot of fantasy at some point tends to become a little bored with the same cookie-cutter characters that appear to dominate much of this genre. Tarr offers a refreshing alternative. Her characters are unique, fascinating, and extremely well developed. Already on the first page of "The Hall of the Mountain King", I was drawn to the powerful (if somewhat tragic) figure of the old king, who stands on the top of his battlements day after day, in sun, wind, rain, and snow, keeping watch for his beloved daughter. The characters that follow are similarly fascinating, haunting, tragic, powerful, and seemingly real. Examples: Mirain, the young son of a mortal and a God, who sets out to conquer what he claims is by right his Kingdom and Empire. At the beginning of the book, Mirain is only 15 years old, but his description as someone who commands the love and respect of his people seems very believable to me, as Tarr immediately sets him apart from other young men his age, due to his heritage (which is gift and burden at the same time ... something that Tarr explores in much detail and very well). Vadin, his squire, who is initially so overcome with his hate for Mirain that he proposes a wager that would forfeit his soul, should he ever feel any friendship for his new master. The list goes on, and each new character is as unique as the first.

The plot is overall very character-driven (as opposed to action-driven). If you read this expecting fast-paced chapters with lots of action sequences, you will probably wind up being disappointed. Although there is certainly a good amount of action in this book, Tarr seems more interested in showing the inner turmoil of her characters as well as the developing relationships between them. She does it exceedingly well!

Probably the only 'problem' I have with this book lies in Tarr's writing style. Overall her prose is beautiful and a pleasure to read. Every now and then, however, the writing becomes "experimental" (for lack of a better word), with sentence fragments and unexpected shifts between subjects. I found myself having to re-read sentences at times in order to keep up with the plot. I do get the feeling that these sequences are very much intended, but they did not quite work for me. Having said that, I don't think it takes away from the overall experience of the book.

In conclusion, I would certainly recommend this book as a refreshing alternative for any compulsive fantasy reader, although it is not up there with my personal favorites. That, however, is a matter of personal preference above anything else, so don't lend too much weight to it.

                  Best,

                  Anika Leithner

2 out of 5 stars Average Fantasy Fare. Yawn........2001-02-23

I read The Hall of the Mountain King back in 1988, and I jotted down my impressions of the novel at that time. The male characters in this novel were very effeminate, and I don't think that's what the author intended. Rather, I got the impression that the author just wasn't skilled in showing how males express deep friendships toward each other.

The plot concerns a youth who's the scion of a sun god. He comes to accept his inheritance of his grandfather's kingdom, but first he has to defeat his uncle. The boy has mind control powers and is a quick swordsman, so he kicks butt through most of the book. However, halfway through the book we find out he's only 15 years old! Suspension of disbelief is shattered at that point.

Save your money. This isn't worth reading.

Before this, I've never read any of Judith Tarr's work, but after reading this trilogy, you can be sure that I will be searching for everything she's ever written! At certain points in the story, I found myself breathless. The characters were very well developed and believable. The tapestry of magic, romance, power and sacrifice that Ms. Tarr weaves is complex and beautiful. This is a definite "must read."

                  5 out of 5 stars A great read.......1999-04-01

I could rave but it'd be pointless, my opinion of this book could not be expressed in less than several pages; Tarr has unsurpassed talent in this area, READ IT.

What?!! No other reviews?!! This is one of my favorite books, along with the others in this series (though I've only read three so far). The characters are real, the plot enjoyable. Ms.Tarr does a fine job of portraying Vadin's relationship with Mirain, handling a rather contraversial issue quite well, not skirting around the edges, but not becoming obsessed either. Expect the same high quality from the others in this series.

This book has the best chapters on Sexuality and Pregnancy as well as the mechanics of birthing that I've read -- and I've been through quite a few books recently. I would highly recommend it to any reader interested in a sound knowledge of the "how-to" of birth.

4 out of 5 stars Some outdated views, but still worth it for the techniques.......2007-09-20

Ok, so I went in reading this with a grain of salt (as was advised) and I see why. The statistics are outdated and there is one part about a baby's possible future resentment toward a mom who chose a C-section...um...yeah. That had me laughing outloud and then I knew I must read the book solely for the techniques.

I have to say, at 38 weeks pregnant, and having extremely painful Braxton Hicks contractions, the relaxation techniques and exercises you can do with a partner or husband, have been a huge help! I love that they do a lot of coaching the coach, too. Right now, my husband basically reads the instructions in a soft voice and it's so comforting through some really painful times.

I love that they touch on the EMOTIONAL progress of the stages of labor, as well, so that that you can get control and will be able to know where you are in the different stages of labor.... So as to avoid getting to the hospital too soon or too late. It is really encouraging about listening to your own body and not going totally on emotions, too.

I just caution you, it's biased against hospitals as well as toward epidurals at all. There are a lot of happy and healthy babies out there delivered by a mom who had an epidural, so it's a mystery why this is the ONLY way to do it right. You must just go into birthing with confidence that you can do this naturally, but knowing there are things that come up and to make sure you keep asking questions. No woman is a failure when it comes to delivering a baby. I just don't buy in to doing it one way. Things happen. Sometimes C-sections save lives. Just be informed, you know?

You owe it to yourself and your baby. How you bring your baby into the world will affect your child for the rest of his or her life. This book is an education on natural birthing and the Bradley Method. It explains all the changes (mental, physical, hormonal, etc) that a pregnant woman goes through, what she needs in labor and how the coach (usually husband) can help.

After reading the book and taking additional Bradley Childbirth Classes, the mystery of birth and fear of the unknown has lifted. I feel totally prepared and ready to welcome our little one.

I read quite a few books during my pregnancy and found that this one, more than any other, helped to truly ease my fears about the pain of labor. I was actually still reading it when I went into labor and found it to be an empowering, informative and comforting resource. I was able to delivery my son without pain medications and felt at ease (without fear) throughout the entire labor and delivery process. I truly believe it contributed greatly to the wonderful birth experience we had.

Others, such as Spaghetti with Simple Tomato Sauce (for a Complicated World) or Macaroni and No Cheese, taste deliciously like the traditional favorites.

All of the recipes are adapted for the home cook by Janice Cook Knight in a conversational tone that makes you feel as though you're sitting across the table from her. When you sample the recipes, you'll wish you were!
