Book Description
How many miles does it take to braise a fish fillet? Should you use your exhaust manifold or your valve cover for a pork tenderloin? Were Jaguars really designed with veal scallopini in mind?
In the new revised and expanded Manifold Destiny, Chris Maynard and Bill Scheller, two experienced rally drivers--and cooks--answer these and any other questions you've got about cooking under the hood. After all, why drive to a diner when you can turn your Chevy into one, especially when you can make a better meal right on top of your engine? With a little bit of ingenuity--and a whole lot of aluminum foil--you can whip up dishes like Cutlass Cod Supreme, Cruise-Control Pork Tenderloin, Nifty NAFTA Nachos, Donner Pass Red Flannel Hash, and Fupped Duck Catera.
Witty, preposterous, and great highway fun, the more than forty recipes in this cult classic are road-tested and taste-bud-approved. It's a must for anyone hitting the road with an empty stomach and a full tank of gas.

Out of Date, Out of Mind.......2007-09-27
I was given Manifold Destiny in the early 1990s for a college graduation gift because my friends knew that I was going to travel a lot (and did) by car. It was a hilarious read and I enjoyed it. However, unlike the majority of reviewers here, I actually TRIED a bunch of recipes. Folks, I'm here to tell you that your results aren't as good as the read. I even secured the efforts of a couple of truckers (who had years of experience cooking food on their engines) and found out that newer cars are better insulated, making cooking anywhere on their engines mighty difficult. Not to mention that everything is STEAMED. Got that? You know what my steak with mushrooms looked like 4 hours after being attached near the hot part of the engine block? Disgusting and undercooked. Chicken wasn't much better. Steamed vegetables weren't ever completely done no matter where they were placed. I tested this in 8 different states (including Hawaii) and 4 different vehicles. My college buddy did try fish in a Chevy truck on the way to Montana. That seemed to work well, but the flavor was not that great. Manifold Destiny was a great idea whose time has passed. I'll stick to wayside stops and my campstove, thank you.
If Alton Brown's not geeky enough for you..........2007-09-21
To look at the prices being charged for used copies of this book is a somewhat frightening experience, because it makes quite obvious that Manifold Destiny is something of an unrecognized culinary classic when people will pay $50 and up for a paperback. But I tell ya something, for the truly hardcore kitchen geek, the same sort of person who might try cooking with lava or a bunsen burner, this would make an incredibly thoughtful present. One can only hope there's a third edition in the pipeline for sometime in the next couple of years.
This book is about cooking in your car, and also eating in your car. That's important, because it gives some nice information on a lot of unusual regional specialties around the United States and Canada (including Michigan's now-famous pasties and Binghamton, NY's spiedies, as well as the legendary smoked meat from Schwartz's Deli in Montreal). It's a nice little hors d'oeuvre for the food tourist.
But there's also lots of good information about cooking on car engines, which is what you came to this review to find out about in the first place, right? Maynard and Scheller talk about all kinds of concerns -- finding the best place on your engine block to secure a packet of food, what kind of aluminum foil to use (and how much -- triple layers), and even a whole bunch of recipes based on American regional cuisine, from traditional Italian like uova in purgatorio to nouvelle-inspired dishes like Thruway Thighs (a stuffed chicken dish). While the info on reviewing cars for their suitability as cookstoves is rather dated, there's still a lot of good information on a rather silly subject.
So find this book for someone very special who loves doing interesting things in the kitchen. They will appreciate it very much.
Dangerous to cars around you.......2005-11-04
Yes. A fine tome of lore.
Well, it's hard to be taken seriously by your travel mates till the fumes roll off of "any cajun spice you can find" simmering there under your hood next to your alternator waft through the cabin air conditioning system. After putting up with their insults the first 100 km of your trip, they are suddenly bought into the process.
Eating out of the engine bay of your car, hood open will doubtlessly attract the attension of those travelling down the highway. It's polite to tilt your wine glass to them as they pause to offer help (drivers excluded, of course).
All good fun.
Manifold Dstiny - A Good Read.......2005-01-04
Manifold Destiny, how to cook on your car engine, is entertaining to read but practical in application. Imagine, if you will, dining on cajun shrimp in garlic rather than McFast Food while motoring to your destination. Recipes for Thruway Chicken Thighs, Hyundai Halibut, Merritt Parkway Veal Scalllopine or Safe-At-Any-Speed Eggplant suggest some of the haute cuisine which can be tucked under the hood of your car for an over the road treat. Presented with both culinary wisdom and a sense of humor, Manifold Destiny is fun to read but serves as a real cookbook as well. Rather than recommending specific cooking times, recipes note the number of miles you should drive before expecting you meal to be done. What a way to plan rest stops! A sure winner.
One of my favorite books.......2002-12-23
The first thing you are likely to wonder is why used copies of this book often go for [fifty dollars] or more in online auctions. Here's why. Once having read it, you'd really truly miss the ability to share it with disbelieving friends. I admit, I am biased, since I happen to have the same type of vehicle/kitchen used in the writing and testing of these recipes. If you own a different type of vehicle, your mileage may vary. Sorry, couldn't resist. It's hilarious reading even if you don't have the guts to try it yourself. The somewhat prosiac nature of the recipes, as derided by one reviewer, actually serves to heighten the surrealism. If you're attracted to the title, the book won't disappoint.

Book Description
THE MACHINE AGE
After the apparent death of James T. Kirk on the U.S.S. Enterpris NCC-1701-B, Montgomery Scott decides to leave Starfleet. A chance encounter with a mysterious woman named Guinan leads him to hitch a ride on the U.S.S. Jenolen -- which crashes into a Dyson Sphere, leaving only Scotty to survive suspended as a transporter pattern....
Seventy-five years later, he is revived aboard the Enterprise-D -- on which Guinan serves as bartender. But fate has not finished with either Scotty or Guinan. The engineer hatches an audacious plan to travel back in time and rescue Jim Kirk the moment before he would vanish into the nexus and bring him back to the twenty-fourth century without damaging the timeline.
Scotty's plan, however, does not go as expected. Though Kirk is rescued, the famed captain and the engineer, as well as Captain Picard, Guinan, and the crew of the Enterprise-D, are trapped in an altered past where there is no Federation, and no human race. Sarek of Vulcan leads a ragtag collection of species fighting a losing battle against the Borg, who have swarmed into the Alpha Quadrant and assimilated Earth.
Starfleet's finest miracle worker must find a way to restore the timeline before the galaxy is overrun....

Good but not great.......2007-08-01
A decent Star Trek book marred by 1) too much plot and action; 2) too much of Scotty's self-pity and Guinan's "feelings."
A very good -- but not great -- time-travel story........2007-04-28
I see that here on Amazon, this book is correctly listed as a Next Generation story; the book cover does not say "Next Generation", merely "Star Trek", probably because it is a bit of a crossover with the original series, prominently featuring Scotty and somewhat less Kirk, and largely taking place in the time period of Kirk's disappearance into the vortex from the Enterprise B. Still, make no mistake, it is a Next Generation story, set (before the time travel) in the period between Scotty's return in "Relics" and the "Generations" movie. The book was well-written, the characterizations, plot, pacing, and action were all quite good, and the handling of the temporal paradoxes quite good right up until the end, when the author cheaped out and used the old "and then they all woke up, and none of it had ever happened" copout. Granted, I can't say that I know what would happen if one were to time-travel and alter the time-stream, since it's a theoretical impossibility, but I truly don't think it would happen like that, ESPECIALLY since it didn't the first time they changed history, but only when they changed it back. That, as a certain character I'm sure we're all familiar with would say, is illogical.
Other than feeling that the ending was cheap, I fully enjoyed this book and would still recommend it.
Reads like a fanfic.......2007-03-05
While reading this novel, the feeling that the writing was too contrived was consistent.(Possible spoiler alert) While I can grant the Kirk Borg link, all the plot devices appeared entirely too convenient and made only for this story not really in keeping with the Trek franchise...for example, why would any being - not protected in a time catastrophe - have any recollection of an alternate timeline?
That being said, it was still a decent read, an interesting take on what might have happened if the Borg Queen had indeed succeeded in the First Contact scenario.
More than just an engineering novel.......2007-01-10
This novel wraps itself around and through the Star Trek Generations movie, and weaves its way through time with Montgomery Scott, accompanied by various iterations of Guinan. So, a nice combination of expanding on Generations moments, coupled with a challenge to the reader's linear mind - and the Prime Directive. It took me a little while to get into the novel, as it seemed to be slow to gain momentum, however, once a third of the way in, I was hooked on the plot. At times, the chronographic transitions were a little rough around the edges, but not sufficiently to dissuade me from enjoying the story. The illumination of Guinan was very enjoyable, although it may have strayed a little beyond the character that has been portrayed to date in that she wasn't 'always in control', as we tend to see in the movies and episodes - but - what else are novels for, if not to push the boundaries of syndication? Very cleverly constructed - highly recommended you take the time to let DeWeese set the scene and enjoy the non-linear journey.
Hard core star trek fans might have mixed feelings.......2007-01-04
I fit into the category above, so if you are a casual fan or just a literature fan, take my opinion w/ a grain of salt.
First off, some of the other reviews are quite accurate in that the book does an excellent job in providing detailed character studies of some key actors. Scotty, Picard and Guinan were given a voice that is very true to their characters. However, Kirk is just glanced over in a way that makes you think the author has never seen an episode of the original series and is just working off a stereotype of who Kirk is. The Borg Queen, though explored deeply, is pretty far off from what was previously known about her. I also think the invention of some species w/ some odd connection to the Borg, who just happen to have Klingon Birds of Prey was rediculous and totally unexplained.
This brings me to the many errors. I wish authors would check their material more thouroughly before they write. Having a ton of connections to other star trek material is a big part of what makes these novels so fun. However, when these references only point out the lack of true understanding of the history of the star trek universe, it tends to miss the point.
Customer Reviews:
dissatisfying.......2006-04-22
Much of what I wrote in the review of the first volume could be repeated here, only worsened because Ms Gladney manages a real mess.
The story in itself is hardly original but nobody here is complaining about that; I think that one of the reasons why fantasy novels are so beloved is a certain amount of predictability: after all every cook uses just the same flour, eggs and butter, it is the final cake which will be judged.
Here the cake is quite hard to stomach:
the story is interesting, well developped, consistent; it could have turned into an epic fantasy classic. Characters are magnificent: Caladrunan and Naga are really easy to love and care for but in this second volume every single side character is just as well rounded.
The problem here is just the same as in the first episode only worse: some paragraphs are good and hint at a competent writer but many others, let's say every other one, is either clumsy, convoluted, ill written or the three things together. There were whole pages where I could hardly understand what was going on, if at all.
Another problem is the treatment of the relationship between the two heroes.
In the first book there was a strong homosexual subtext: nothing explicit, just hints, which was just fine for a first episode: the characters after all still have to get to know, to trust and grow confortable with each other.
In this second one Ms Gladney just does not seem to know what to do with this subtext; she does not reject it because Caladrunan and Naga touch, hug, stroke, caress each other anytime they are alone, they seem to be happy only when the are able to sleep side by side in the same bed. During Naga's fits Caladrunan does not hesitate to hold him tight and scoop him tenderly in his huge arms (Naga is constantly aware of how huge, strong, powerful his liege is) to lay him in his own bed in front of anyone so that the villains feel right at ease calling Naga a boy-whore.
Neither is she convinced to give credit to it because they do all of this, but just before things start to get serious they stop and after a few lines we are told how Caladrunan used to passionately love his wife and how Naga aches for a woman.
Confusing.
As far as I know, no third episode was ever published. As it is the plot can stand on its own but barely.
Should Ms Gladney decide to complete her story I strongly suggest a thorough editing and, why not, a revision of the first two volumes.
Another promise to buy.......2003-02-22
On the off chance that publishers notice these thngs I will add my voice of support to further installments of the series, as well as a promise to buy them as they come out. Of course for those who have not read the the first two books, if you like flawed but fascinating characters (with a certain element of exceptional ability) than try them out.
Heather Gladney must be allowed to write again!.......2001-11-11
Like all the previous reviews I laud the talent that is obviously inherent in Ms. Gladneys writings. I know we all axiously wait to read the next installment in the series and today i was visiting her homepage to see that she has not one but two new books slated for the Teot series. Now that is sometihng to make you skip a beat. I've read and reread her books at least 20 times, frequenting the bookstores to find the second novel when i finished the first. These books are full of every intrigue you could wish, military tactics, political intrigue, religion and the in-depth character make it so alive.I urge all of Ms Gladney's readers to show your support for these phenomenal pieces of work!
Adding My Voice.......2001-09-19
Teot's War & Bloodstorm have been with me since I bought them--through high school, college, and five moves. I look in the G's in the Sci-Fi section first thing, even after all these years, out of hopeful habit. Great books; I'm sad I can't replace the originals since they're held together by tape and fondness. Maybe some smart publisher will notice how much reader loyalty is here.
Teot's War & Bloodstorm.......2001-08-30
Very worthwhile books, I do sincerely hope that the series is continued/finished. Hopefully the original two will be re-published so that others may read and learn about the very interesting character of Naga Teot. I would love to know if there's some way to keep updated on if there will be more books.

The dramatic and chilling story of an Ebola virus outbreak in a surburban Washington, D.C. laboratory, with descriptions of frightening historical epidemics of rare and lethal viruses. More hair-raising than anything Hollywood could think of, because it's all
true.
Book Description
A highly infectious, deadly virus from the central African rain forest suddenly appears in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. There is no cure. In a few days 90 percent of its victims are dead. A secret military SWAT team of soldiers and scientists is mobilized to stop the outbreak of this exotic "hot" virus. The Hot Zone tells this dramatic story, giving a hair-raising account of the
appearance of rare and lethal viruses and their "crashes" into the human race. Shocking, frightening, and impossible to ignore, The Hot Zone proves that truth really is scarier than fiction.

A True Story .......2007-08-15
I purchased this book for my granddaughter. She is in Nursing School and was told by one of her teachers this book would be of special interest to anyone in the medical field as well as anyone else. She said it was easy to read and held her attention very well. She was glad to have the opportunity to read this terrifying true story about an Ebola outbreak in Africa.
It CAN happen here.......2007-08-14
Marburg. Ebola. Two names that mean nothing to most laymen, but scare the hell out of virologists. You see, Marburg and Ebola are exotic viruses which, when introduced into the human population, kill nine out of ten in a ghastly and painful manner, literally dissolving their insides. So far, outbreaks of these viruses have been rare, usually occurring in remote African villages. Once, however, an Ebola virus surfaced in the United States. The Hot Zone tells the story of its arrival and the steps the military took to take prevent its spread.
Preston takes great pains to tell the stories of these killer viruses, documenting their origins and the human cost of their spread. He takes readers to Kitum Cave in Kenya, where many believe the viruses originated. Then he takes them to Germany and Africa, where outbreaks of the viruses have ravaged local populations. Finally, he brings them to a suburb of Washington, DC, where a sister virus manifests itself, threatening the safety of millions. Frightening because it's true, this story will have you nervously turning pages until the happy, but unsettling, conclusion.
Most of us live with blinders on, not realizing that death can take us any time it wants. Can't happen here you say? It already did, but the good news is we all dodged a bullet. The bad news is that it could happen again, with far more disastrous results.
Outstanding, Scary, Gripping - Must Read!! .......2007-08-06
As soon as I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. Reading about Ebola-Z/R/S, sent chills down my spine. I was so scared, that I was afraid to touch the book next morning. I couldn't sleep through the night wondering what was going to happen next. I have lived less than two miles from the "Monkey house" and have eaten several times at the Taco Bell and McDonald's mentioned in the book. Fully understanding that the building no longer exists and that area is extremely safe, I am unsure about my reaction when I am in that area next time. One thing is certain - I have a whole lot of new appreciation for CDC,USAMRIID, and Pathologists. I am thankful to them for their altruistic service to the well being of mankind.
As a Biology Teacher, I recommend this EVERY semester!.......2007-07-24
This book, and its sequel, Demon in the Freezer, are two of the few books that have kept me up at night. If they don't scare you to death, if you can actually put the book down, then you aren't actually reading these books. The Hot Zone is the basis for the movie Outbreak but 100 time better. It is a true story and written in a way that grips you from the first page to the very last. I teach college biology for non-science majors and I have recommended this book every semester for five years. It is easy to read and understand. Hard to beat!
This will keep you up at night.......2007-07-23
I read this book while living only a few hours from Reston, VA where the US ebola outbreak took place, which made it all the more horrifying to read.
As much as we love to believe we live in a world made safe by science, it is unnerving to read about a virus, so tiny and so primative, that can have such devastating effects on humanity. As we continue to transform our landscape and become more and more relient on technology, we place ourselves at enormous risk of new and emerging diseases.
This book's recounting of the handling of this outbreak, and others shows the progress of science and the limitations people and governments interests put on our very survival.

Customer Reviews:
Sensational True Story !!! Blood !! Gore !!! Life Death !!.......2007-01-16
The Hot Zone tells the history of ebola and what we know about it. Ebola is a very nasty hemmoragic fever and so, as many people point out, Preston resorts to sensationalism in his descriptions of blood being vomited, sprayed on walls and coming out of victims in every way possible. One strain of the disease, Ebola Zaire, kills 90% of those infected and that is with medical treatment. The book is freaky because the virus is freaky.
The story starts in the late 70's with the first ebola victim, a british man living in north Africa. Preston traces this outbreak of the disease and subsequent cases and chronicles the search for the source of ebola and research on it. The title, The Hot Zone, is a term used to describe areas where research on "hot", or really really bad in layman's terms, viruses are studied. He describes research on site and at the CDC and shows the extent to which the hot zone is kept separate from the rest of the world.
One of the most disturbing events described in the book is the discovery of Ebola Reston in Reston Virginia. This strain of ebola was killing off monkeys in a research facility and because of the mysterious symptoms tissue samples were sent to the CDC. The sample were found to contain ebola. Apparently the strain carried by these monkeys had little effect on people, but an animal handler who had had a cold had antibodies to Ebola Zaire. This demonstrates a close call on a deadly disease moving to a new continent.
The Hot Zone is a good introduction to containment procedures for very contageous diseases for the general public, and makes one think about how fast a disease could spread in our present day world of airplane travel and lots of it. However it is pretty bloody, so not for people who are bothered by that sort of thing.

In this definitive guide to Burgundy’s 100 appellations, its complex wine laws, and innumerable growers and merchants, expert Anthony Hanson gives critical insight into the region’s possible pitfalls, its key improvements, and greatest bottles.

I found the information, the review, the opinion of this book is not that useful, because the information content is out of date. An updated version will be helpful.
The best Burgundy book for the general aspects of the region.......1998-04-20
Mr. Hanson's coverage of the producers is both shallow and too biased on his accidental trade relations. His appellations survey is as adequate as almost every other writer's. But his in-depth general chapter (which IMHO could and should be published as a 300 pages book of its own) is without parallel! Simply a must for any Burgundy lover and for anyone seriously interested in this intricate wine region.
