Every Dragon has a Story.......2007-07-28
#2 in the Chintz 'n China Mystery Series. Things go downhill quickly for Emerald when a man leaves her shop after a reading and is killed by a hit and run driver leaving behind a small jade Ming dragon that has been cursed and disrupts the lives of those that are in possession of it. Unfortunately, little things in this book kept distracting me from the story. Doesn't Yasmine have an editor that would point out that you don't give a school nurse your insurance card or that you don't hear the "ringing" of the dial tone, even if this is a cozy mystery shouldn't an editor still do their job?
The Second in the Chintz & China Series.......2006-06-09
This book, like the first, has both a paranormal and normal mystery that the main character needs to solve while balancing running her own business, romantic relationships, friendships, and raising two children. This book moves the series along as well. As far as the main character's personal life, this book seems to focus on a transition period.
In this book, Emerald only does one tarot reading, for a client who is hit by a hit & run driver after leaving Emerald's shop. He leaves a cursed trinket behind that turns Emerald's life upside down. While bringing back many of the characters from the first book, we meet some new ones as well.
The book is well written and very entertaining. I think the first book was better, but this one is definitely worth the read. The book is a little hard to find but worth the effort.

it on here and decided to take a chance on it.Received It Tuesday And started reading it Tuesday Night.Got hooked
and stayed up most of the night to finish it.Liked the main
character,Emerald 0'Brien and well as the supporting characters
and plan to read other books Yasmine has written.

This second book in the Chintz 'n' China series is even better than the first. The mystery is offbeat, Emerald is drawn into taking more chances, and the other characters each emerge as individuals in their own right. I especially enjoyed Jimbo. The book grew in tension, too, and really kept me turning the pages. A highly enjoyable second act in the series.

This collection of short fiction from Joe R. Lansdale will satisfy many different readers with its plethora of stories ranging from the humorous ("Bob the Dinosaur Goes to Disneyland") to the truly frightening ("God of the Razor"). A fascinating collection which showcases the versatility of Mr. Lansdale, I found myself running through a gauntlet of emotions from disgust in the pit of my stomach ("My Dead Dog Bobby") to being touched in the depths of my heart ("Not From Detroit"). And for those interested in the unexpected, such gems as "Chompers" and "The Shaggy House" deliver. The final tale "The Events Concerning a Nude Fold-Out Found in a Harlequin Romance" contains the flavor of Mr. Lansdale's more recent work and will please the readers of the Hap and Leonard books (as well as "Cold in July"). My personal favorite is the title tale as it provides a wickedly sarcastic, yet comical explanation behind the success of bestselling authors. In addition, the author provides introductions to each of his stories that are both inspiring and amusing (especially when he refers to his "popcorn dreams"--don't ask!) Scour the used bookstores and find this collection!

Joe Lansdale is one of the few writers who is truly a master of both the short story and novel, and this collection does a fine job of showcasing both his talent and range. If you are not familiar with Lansdale, this collection is a good place to start -- but don't trust the cover artwork; there's not a dragon or elf to be found in this hard-edged anthology

Flexibility and tolerance are learned skills, as any parent knows if they've seen an irascible 2-year-old grow into a pleasant, thoughtful, and considerate older child. Unfortunately, for reasons that are poorly understood, a few children don't "get" this part of socialization. Years after toddler tantrums should have become an unpleasant memory, a few unlucky parents find themselves battling with sudden, inexplicable, disturbingly violent rages--along with crushing guilt about what they "did wrong." Medical experts haven't helped much: the flurry of acronyms and labels (Tourette's, ADHD, ADD, etc.) seems to proffer new discoveries about the causes of such explosions, when in fact the only new development is alternative vocabulary to describe the effects. Ross Greene, a pediatric psychologist who also teaches at Harvard Medical School, makes a bold and humane attempt in this book to cut through the blather and speak directly to the (usually desperate) parents of explosive children. His text is long and serious, and has the advantage of covering an enormous amount of ground with nuance, detail, and sympathy, but also perhaps the disadvantage that only those parents who are not chronically tired and time-deprived are likely to get through the entire book. Quoted dialogue from actual sessions with parents and children is interspersed with analysis that is always oriented toward understanding the origins of "meltdowns" and developing workable strategies for avoidance. A Must-Read for Parents of Challenging Children.......2007-10-05
Ross Greene has written an incredibly insightful book about the kids for whom traditional parenting techniques just don't work. He explains well why kids who yell, scream, and generally melt down over what seem to be -- to parents and others -- inconsequential things can't just "be flexible." And he explains well why the traditional carrot-and-stick approach of rewards and consequences just doesn't work with these kids. As a parent of a child who went from colic as an infant to tantrums as a toddler to explosions and melt downs as a child, I know what he's talking about, and I've tried all those other techniques that haven't worked. Greene lets parents see that kids who lack frustration tolerance and flexibility need extra support and a different approach to learning those skills, the way a kid with a reading disability needs extra support and a different approach to reading. It all makes so much sense, but is a great departure from the typical limit-setting approaches. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. It's really helping me to become the parent I want to be!
A great guide for parents struggling with an explosive child!.......2007-08-14
I was pleasantly surprised by the straightforward approach to this book. Instead of a psychobabble, Dr. Greene explains potential reasons your child may be struggling to control his/her outbursts in language a layperson can understand. More importantly, we found very practical, effective help for dealing with these frustrating explosions that have become very disruptive to our family. I feel hopeful after reading this book that we can finally help our child deal with the frustrations of life in a healthy, appropriate manner. If you are looking for solutions without thousands of dollars in therapy and medication that may not be warranted for your child (although sometimes it certainly is), I would highly recommend this book.

Last year my 16 year old stepdaughter moved in with us. She has ADHD and ODD. I had never even HEARD of ODD at that time. I could not believe that a 16 year old could throw TANTRUMS but she has my 4 year old nephew beat. She could melt down over the smallest things! This book confirmed what I knew in my heart - that she doesn't WANT to be a bad kid and she DOES want our LOVE. Learning to negotiate with her in a positive way has been incredibly helpful and there have been much fewer meltdowns since my husband and I read this book.

I was amazed when I began reading the book The Explosive Child. I am about half-way through the book so far and I have learned much already on proactive ways to approach different situations involving my difficult 4 year old son. This is extremely important. Although he has not had an official diagnosis at this time, I can relate to much of what these other families encountered while raising their chilren. I highly recommend this book to any parent who is trying to raise a child who has difficulties with change (especially), constructive criticism, and many other roadblocks in the life of a parent/child relationship. I am looking forward to continuing to study this book.

As a proud owner of literally hundreds of cookbooks, it's always a wonderful surprise to discover a terrific book that I've never seen or heard of before. The Commander's Palace New Orleans Cookbook is just such a book. This book was recently used as the basis of two recipes in a gourmet cooking class I attend once a week, and the results were outstanding, to say the least. We started the meal with Commander's Garlic Bread which was served with Creamy Tomato Bisque with Lump Crabmeat and a Chiffonade of Fresh Basil. The main course, grilled salmon and barbequed mouth watering smoked spare ribs, were simply out of this world ... with a sauce inspired by this book's suggestions. But when we got to the dessert! We made Bananas Foster, a favorite dessert in New Orleans, and one of the most rich and wicked desserts you'll find anywhere - flambéed with banana liqueur and rum, and served over vanilla ice cream. This recipe alone will transport you to another world... a world that will have your taste buds swirling for days and leave you hankering for a trip to New Orleans to visit the Palace yourself.

This may very well be an excellent cook-book, what do I know?? The style (NO PICTURES) and the typography is so old-fashioned that it bores me to tears! I get no inclination to open it at all!!

A Great New Orleans Cookbook.......1999-12-07
The Brennan's New Orleans Cookbook is a great, classic New Orleans cookbook. (Note: I was born in NO, live in South Louisiana, and lived in NO for 5 years.) Try the recipes for Stuffed Bell Peppers, Stuffed Mirletons (use shrimp instead of crabmeat), Red Beans, Redfish Courtboullion, and Creole Jambalaya. One day I'm going to start on Page 1 and cook everything in this book!

A friend of ours bought this for us as a gift. I'm glad we didn't spend any money on it. Every time we've tried to make any of these recipes, they haven't turned out. I get the feeling most of these weren't tested before they were put into the book.

I thought the book was a great way of taking the recipes of New Orleans home... Also try reading this book before you go out to dinner in The Quarter... The recipes seem simple enough to execute. Next to Chicago - New Orleans is the Cooking Mecca!

Nice photos; good for preserving memories of a visit to NOLA. Otherwise, not of much practical application.
DeMers' collaboration with Jaeger on the later published "New Orleans Seafood Cookbook" is far superior. Save your money and buy the Seafood Cookbook.

New Orleans Cooking At Its Best.......2002-03-28
If you want to enjoy real New Orleans cooking with a unique flair, this is the book for you. As a New Orleans native, I have many cookbooks with local recipes, but this one has not only wonderful recipes, but surprising insight into the Brennan family and a behind the scenes peek into a great restaurant. Each recipe is extraordinary combining unusual ingredients into fabulous dishes, such as the red bean dip with homemade potato chips and the delectable fish recipes. The instructions are concise and easy to follow. Buy this book if only for the famous white chocolate bread pudding. This is a true epicurean delight, and the Brennan family is a New Orleans treasure.
