Customer Reviews:
Just an entertaining read.......2007-10-03
I have read several of Amanda Quick's previous books in this series and I thought they were easy reads. I was hoping this book would be a super mystery but it really didn't unfold to rate a super read. I'd say it was a entertaining story, but weak in the plot and the characters were one dimensional. The dialog between the characters was pretty close to being boring. So, all in all this is not a terrible book, just a nice, easy story to read in bed before the lights go out. I'm still a fan of Amanda and I'll probably check out her latest books
BOOOOOOOO.......2007-06-19
I happened across this author and loved the first book I read. It was so great that I went to the library and checked out six of her other books. Big mistake! Let me give anyone who cares a tip- if you have read one of her books, you've pretty much read them all. With each new book I read, I just knew there would be a new story at some point. Never happened! This particular book had me wicked mad by page 25. "Nah honey, that hot chick wasn't coming onto me. She was just in my room at night and hugged me. And oh yeah...she's rich too. Sorry hun." Tobias made me want to throw up! BIG no-no for the leading man (who is basically a private detective by the way) not to notice when a woman is manipulating him and hurting the people he loves. This behavior is expected from guys that are looking to get some on the side, not a guy that is crazy about one girl. My suggestion for improving the book is having Tobias be the one that flies off the roof! If you paid actually money for this book, you got hosed!
Another great adventure for Lavinia and Tobias.......2007-06-15
I loved this book as much as the other two Lake and March mysteries. They're just a great team! I would gladly read many more of their stories. They're clever and funny and very romantic. I never get tired of them or the currant tarts. I think any of their stories (or any of Amanda Quick's books for that matter) should be a movie. I'd love to see this on the big screen; would be absolutely wonderful for true romantics.
Amazon, com needs to offer zero stars.......2007-04-18
Tobias March and Lavinia Lake are spending the weekend at a country house party when Lavinia see a have been the last person to see an Lord alive before he is pushed off roof. So starts their looking in the murder. Was it a ramdom event or could it been for a more evil purpose?
"Late to the Wedding" is the lastest book that I have read by Amanda Quick and I have to say that I am happy that I only paid a quarter for it. With each book I read Ms. Quick seems to get worse. These Characters lack the charm of earlier books and the only reason that I even read it was it happen to be in my bag and there was nothing else to do.
Thoroughly Enjoyable.......2007-02-09
This was the first of this series that I read. I really enjoyed the mystery and the strong female lead character. It was an exciting love story. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical romance.

Fun read ... can so relate to much of Heather's unplanned situations!.......2006-10-24
I liked this book even better than the first one. (It's Never Too Late To Get A Life)
Once again, Angie gets involved in so much "stuff" by just living her normal life. (I can so relate.)
I giggled as soon as I read the symptoms her poor friends - all three of them (and her) - exhibited, knowing full-well what was going on.
The only complaint I have, is there was too much of a happy ending; that's all well and good, but it kinda detracted from the credibility and reality of the story.
I'm anxious to read book number 3, even though I rarely read Chick-Lit.
After attending Heather's work-shop at a Writer's Conference at Sac State last week-end, I was so impressed with the way she spoke and presented herself, I bought both of her books that are currently in print.
I'll be at her book #3 signing next month.
Boy, can I relate!.......2006-03-28
It was 2AM and my hot flashes combined with my very own "fur covered hot water bottle" were keeping me awake (OK, and maybe some insomnia) when I picked up this book. Thank goodness I didn't have to go to work the next day because I not only saw the sun come up but tore up my to-do list and just enjoyed the book. I was glad to hear that there would be one more....keep them coming!
lighthearted amusing romp .......2006-01-28
As she closes in on her fiftieth birthday, Angie is at the point of no return and needs help as she is behind on planning her daughter Jenna's wedding. She turns to her best friends, but soon worries about them as she realizes none are in a mental state to assist her; instead they need help. Marie's marriage with Jack appears over; grandmother Jess dates men younger than her children; and Gwen seems like an early Alzheimer's victim with no ability to recall anything which in turn has led to a lack of self confidence which in turn leadns to more forgetfulness.
She soon concludes that menopause has struck making her realize nature must take its course. At the same time, she wonders if menopause can be used as an alibi if she kills the bimbos dating her son and her former husband; they offer her help with the wedding, which means more work for her as these female morons have individual bra sizes greater than their combined IQ,.
In her second adventure to regain control of her life, Angie struggles with the upcoming nuptials of her daughter, but as she seeks help from her three amigas she deduces they each face big crises. Her pals were there for her when Bob dumped her (see IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO GET A LIFE) so Angie plans to reciprocate, find time to put on a wedding and cope without killing the double teaming bimbos. Though a serious undertone with the troubles facing the aging boomers, this is a lighthearted amusing romp starring a woman who struggles to regain control of her life at a time when everything seems out of control.

Book Description
A STAR RISES IN THE SOUTH
When the foreigners confronted Sterren in Ethshar of the Spices he was uneasy; when they all but abducted him, taking him to an obscure kingdom in the south, he knew he was in a terrible predicament.
A predicament some might actually find appealing -- he was by heredity the Ninth Warlord of Semma, least of the small kingdoms; he was a noble, and his rank afforded him material privileges, even in a place as insignificant and obscure as Semma.
But the office also carried certain terrible responsibilities: he was to win the war the stupid King had stirred up by his arrogance. Two larger and stronger Kingdoms were preparing to invade Semma.
And if the country lost, the first thing likely to be forfeit was the life of the Warlord.
And if it won . . . if it won, the fate and shape of Ethshar would change forever.
For deep in the south there are secrets of magic not even Sterren can imagine.
A LEGEND OF ETHSHAR
Customer Reviews:
Read It!.......2007-08-08
Let's see: This is an Ethshar series book and is therefore an excellent read. That may sound like a bold statement, but it is a fact. Before you run out and buy it I recommend that you start at the beginning with the first book "The miss enchanted sword", that way you will understand what is going on. Get the whole series and enjoy many hours wasting time reading about a world of total fantasy.
Note: This applies to every book in the series, I have read them all.
Another wonderfully exciting Ethshar book!.......2003-08-02
Sterren had always been lucky at dice, and was content with the life of a gambler in busy Ethshar of the Spices. However, when he is practically kidnapped to one of the Small Kingdoms, and proclaimed their hereditary warlord, he finds that his luck has run out. Facing a war against two larger kingdoms, Sterren has incompetent generals, a small and poorly trained and equipped army, and the knowledge that defeat in battle means the execution of the losing warlord. Unwilling to abandon his new country to destruction, Sterren takes the course of action preferred by any Ethsharite, and hires some magicians to solve his problems. However, magic rarely takes care of all problems, and in this case the cure seems to be worse than the disease!
Once again, this is another wonderfully exciting Ethshar book! Lawrence Watt-Evans loves writing stories that throw a young person in at the deep end, leaving the reader to watch as he or she struggles and overcomes, often with courage, luck, ability and a good dollop of humor! This is a great Fantasy book of wizards and spells and high adventure. I highly recommend it to you.
Right up there.......2002-12-12
I have probably read this book more than any other in the series, and I enjoy it more each time. While the Misenchanted Sword is the primer, and Single Spell sets the tone for the rest of the novels, this book gives the best examples of all the varieties of magic in this world. It also has a likable character forced into extreme circumstances who uses brains he never knew he had. A real treasure.
Standard Formula.......2001-11-20
Predictable plot, sketchy locale, good dialogue, sterotypical characters individuated by anachronistic twentieth century quips in an otherwise medieval mileau. The author has written this book several times under different titles with re-named characters in various locales. Reminiscent of Heinlein's "Glory Road" without fully realized characters. If you haven't already read one of Lawrence Watt-Evan's books it's definitely worth the price, worth reading for enjoyment, not worth re-reading. If you have read one of his books you know what your getting. Buy it, if you want more of the same. I borrowed my copy.
Excellent.......2001-08-11
Watt-Evans, one of my favorite authors, writes another story in the world of Ethshar. Not really connected with any of the others, still a very good read. It has the same style as "The Misenchanted Sword", the same feel to it. I liked both the novels, and highly recommend them both.

Customer Reviews:
Worth a look for those considering surgery........2007-06-23
I had the opportunity to attend a lecture/demonstration by Ms. Pearl at the International Makeup Artist Trade Show in Pasadena a few years back. She is an amazing artist and has lots to offer. While her methods echo methods found in other artists' books, I was pleased to see someone finally compile these techniques in an easy to follow format specifically for people considering plastic surgery.
Ms. Pearl not only describes methods for disguising flaws; she also outlines the risks and costs associated with the surgical option. As a makeup artist living in Los Angeles, I can't tell you how many people I have encountered who are suffering severe complications (and in some cases, disfigurements) from their elective surgeries - surgeries they didn't really need. You can accomplish so much with makeup; I would encourage anyone considering surgery to try makeup first.
Many of the reviewers have expressed concerns about "caking" too much makeup on. In some instances that's necessary (tattoo cover, raised freckles), but in most cases you don't have to cake it on as long as you put the right product in the right place, and blend it well. Good luck!
Spirit Lift.......2007-01-09
The techiques in this book will stop anyone from going under the knife for a small lift. Portrait style pictures and the stage pressence of my clients and self have never looked better.
Everyone Is Beautiful.......2006-04-15
This book starts with the premise that everyone has unique qualities that are beautiful. Rather than expend large sums of money, suffer the pain and risks and possible dissatisfaction of permanent surgical options, the author suggests using makeup. Sharing techniques she honed as a professional make-up artist, the author takes regular people, wrinkles and all, and transforms them. Each step is photographed and described in the text and the make-overs are impressive. The models include the author, her family and friends and she addresses everything from covering tattoos and age spots to enhancing the eyes, straigthening the nose and enhancing the bust line.
Scattered throughout the book are the author's "pearls of wisdom", essentially cheap and easy beauty tips. There is a section on make-up tools and how to buy makeup.
I enjoyed this book for its upbeat tone and simple and clear instructions. It is basic but the results can't be beat. I applaud the author for advocating a healthy approach to beauty. People should learn to feel good about themselves and accept that age and beauty are not incompatible. The models in the book represent a good cross section of the population including minorities, young girls, and seniors. All are refreshingly individual--no botoxed Barbie dolls here. This book is more than a manual, it is a mood lifter too!!
still nothing that new.......2006-03-07
I bought this book for the purpose of gaining new and insightful makeup tricks and tips. I didn't find them in this book. I own many makeup books and have learned many techniques over the years. Unfortunately this book didn't really impress me. Every make-up book explains what foundation is and why you need to pluck your brows, but I need something new! I wouldn't recommend it if you own at least one of the popular makeup books
not for everyday looks.......2006-02-25
i enjoyed reading through the book once....it was "interesting" but it's not something i would constantly refer back to because i felt the makeup was too heavy and the "tricks" were too over the top...BUT if you work in a business where you MUST look different say for photos or whatever then this would be helpful. i personally have adopted more of a "take what you have and work with it stance" so i would never pile on this much make-up for the sake of appearing different. it's not a bad book just not something i'd use for everyday or really even special occasion good looks...the content of this book would have been great as a tv program you watch once then move on with your life.

Sauces.......2007-05-13
I have looked over the book and found it useful in a large area of my cooking. I am currently in a culinary student and found it very help in finding something for the different foods I am preparing. the book was suggested by the instructing chef to purchase this book. So if you are serious about cooking, it is a must and you won't be disappointed.
Michel Roux Sauces.......2006-08-28
This is a very useful book. I would not be without it!
Great Sauces Source for the rest of us! Buy It........2006-07-21
`Sauces, Sweet and Savory, Classic and New' by leading French / English chef, Michel Roux is a great addition to good books about basic cooking techniques for amateur cooks and foodies throughout the English speaking world.
One thing I want to be clear is that the blurb from `Homes and Gardens' stating that `If there's a sauce worth making - classic or modern - its in this book' is clearly wrong. Not only does the book not contain every useful sauce; many of the recipes for some sauces in the book are not necessarily the best. The first case is made by the fact that the book does not contain a recipe for the Caesar Salad dressing, even though there are many `salad dressing' recipes in the book. The second case is proven by the fact that the recipe for the great spaghetti sauce Bolognaise is NOT the same as you will find in any reliable book on Italian regional cooking, as the best recipes usually contain two or three different kinds of meat, not just one.
But that doesn't mean this is not an excellent reference on sauce making for the average amateur cook who has reached the point where they can mix and match ideas from different sources and is not bound to following recipes word for word. This book is NOT a definitive treatise on sauces; however, such volumes already exist, so why do that task over again. The best comprehensive references are `Sauces' by James Peterson (be sure to get the 2nd Edition) and `The Sauce Bible' by David Paul Larousse. Of the two, Peterson's book goes into more depth about individual sauces while Larousse contains recipes for more named sauces. An amateur friendly alternative to Michel Roux' book is `Get Saucy' by Grace Parisi, which is no match for the professional texts, but may appeal to you more than the presentation from the other side of the pond.
Since I also own Peterson and Larousse, my preference for everyday use is definitely Roux' work. For starters, the pictures are drop dead gorgeous, as witnessed by the book's earning a Glenfiddich cookbook award for visuals. So the book is a real joy to walk through as a first pass. But this is not a good reason for buying a cookbook if the recipes are poor, and these recipes are certainly not poor, although they are sometimes just a bit on the brief side, with explanations and nuances left out. More on this later.
The very best aspect of the book is its organization and the fact that it covers several common preparations we may not automatically consider as sauces. The chapters of recipes are:
Stocks
Liaisons & Instant Sauces
Vinaigrettes, Flavored Oils & Vinegars
Flavored Butters & Vegetable Coulis
Sauces & Chutneys for Terrines, Pates & Game
Sauces for Fish and Shellfish
Emulsion Sauces
White Sauces
Brown Sauces
Dessert Sauces
One thing that immediately surprised me was the fact that Monsieur Roux did not call for long cooking times for his stocks. In fact, he confirmed a suspicion I've had for some time that long cooking tends to spoil some of the finer properties of stocks. The only type of stock requiring more than three hours is a veal stock, where your primary interest is in extracting all the gelatin from the young bones. To compensate for short cooking times, he calls for the aromatic vegetables to be diced fairly finely, instead of simply throwing whole carrots, onions, and celery into the pot. This should be enough right there to convince you that this is a worthy reference for sauces, as you can now discard all the advice for 8 to 12 hour stock cooking times.
A second thing that I really liked is the number of common sauces and methods that were covered in the book. Here we have everything we need to make meat gravies, mayonnaise (including a low calorie version), pesto (pistu), vinaigrettes, chocolate sauce, flavored butters, Mornay sauce (the stuff on Mac and cheese!), chocolate sauces, caramel sauce, beurre blanc (3 variations), aioli, and the very grand Americaine Sauce.
It may seem pedantic, but I consider the presence of the French names for all these sauces to be essential. The main reason for this is that whomever writes about these sauces will also refer to them by their commonly accepted French names, regardless of what English translation they may inflict on us.
The aspect of the book which will most appeal to the most people is the advice the author gives on how to use the sauces. This is all encapsulated in a dandy little index that correlates sauces and ingredients. For crab, for example, one can consider a bagnarotte sauce, mayonnaise, sea-urchin sauce, or thermidor sauce. This list is certainly not complete, as it doesn't include remoulade or that American variety of remoulade, the tartar sauce. But this is a great guide for what to do when you've got a big head of cauliflower on sale (there are six suggested sauces for cauliflower).
This book is not perfect (but then virtually no books are). What it gains in conciseness and ease of use, it gives up to explaining the tricks and pitfalls behind a lot of sauce making, and this doesn't just apply to the difficult emulsion sauces. There is nothing on how to recover a broken mayonnaise or hollandaise and there is nothing on fine tuning buerre blanc, two subjects which the `professional' books cover. The picture section on sauce tools is pretty, but not totally illuminating, as they show four tools in one picture and don't clearly state which is which. One thing I must say is that for an English book, there are practically no obscure Anglicisms. The only `continental' tendency foreign to an American is that the author assumes your shrimp will come to you with heads on!
Still, this is an excellent guide to striking out on your own with sauces. Buy It Now!
Not Just a Pretty Book- A Great Reference.......2006-02-14
The recent publication of Anthony Bourdain's excellent Les Halles Cookbook, with its repeated insistence on using true demi-glace, turned me back to Raymond Sokolov's Saucier's Apprentice, which I hadn't used in years. As my food interests have swung ever southward in recent years, I have increasingly eschewed the rich, voluptuous sauces of haute cuisine in favor of the clearer, livelier flavors of Provence and Northern Italy. But, as he is so gifted at doing, Bourdain reawoke my interest in good, workmanlike bistro cooking. And it's a cold winter in Salt Lake city, so I've been eating alot of meat. Returning to Sokolov had mixed rewards: the sauces are classic and delicious, but they just feel too overwhelming. They tend to coat food and take center stage, even when perfectly matched in a well-composed menu. I found myself drinking [even] more wine to counterbalance the rich, often buttery sauces. So I went looking for something that I thought would be a compromise: updated sauces of classic character, but more transparent to the palette and more amenable to a composed, coursed menu.
It turns out that I didn't need to compromise at all. I found Michel Roux's Sauces, somewhat skeptical that such a pretty book could be good, and discovered that the classic sauces needn't overwhelm the food on which they're served. I have cooked his Sauce Cumberland [which I served on a pheasant terrine] and received actual applause from the assorted restaurant owners and cooks over for supper that night. It was clear, brightly-flavored, balanced, and silky; a hyper-refined version of a classic I had never much cared for. Then I made the Sauce Grand Veneur, which can be a monstrous undertaking [see my review of Sokolov]. With some fond de veau on hand [thank God] Roux's instructions were quite easy and quick. I can't say that my sauce equalled the one I had in Burgundy several years ago, but it was the best sauce I've ever made: rich, silky, meaty, but, again, not overwheming or overly fatty. I served it on venison, again to apparently sincere expressions of gratitude and ecstasy. Since then I have made Roux's versions of Sauce Poivrade [again on venison], Red Butter Hollandaise [on tuna], and a couple of the salad dressings. All were improvements on recipes I've tried from other books. Consistently, these sauces are fine, elegant, well-balanced, and, most importantly, good with food.
I find that having Sokolov [for his system, his opinions, and his old hotel-food orthodoxies] alongside Roux [with his refined, classic but modern recipes and outstanding visual presentation and food recommendations] is about all the sauce library I need. Certainly it will take years to get through the more appealing sauces in these two books, and to learn to do them well. Short of enrolling in cooking school, there may be no better saucier's apprenticeship than cooking from these books.
Excellent Book.......2006-01-18
I'll save myself the typing and just suggest you read Dr. Nieves' review below regarding this book and Sokolov's THE SAUCIER'S APPRENTICE. These books combined will take anyone well down the path toward sauce mastery. I'm a long time chef and I found much to learn, or re-learn, in both books. Simply excellent.
