I wanted to add a few quick points since other reviewers have so succinctly covered the gist of the book.

This "mystery-lite" series, set in Edwardian England, while not the most enthralling, mystery wise, is above par in characterizations, fun dialog and giving the reader the ambiance of the period the stories take place in.

I read the first three books back to back: first-Snobbery With Violence, second-Hasty Death, and third-Sick of Shadows-and I do recommend the reader read the books in order so they can follow the flow of Rose, Harry and crews adventures and misadventures.

I am an avid reader of Miss Chesney's Regency Romances and I can honestly say that this series is just as entertaining. Chesney is well known for her intriguing bits of info about the period the book is set in and it is here as well. I learned so much about the social customs, beliefs, superstitions and slang of the period.

I would suggest this series of any fan of period fiction who is looking for something a bit lighter and more funny than say The Historian, LOL. There is enough mystery to satisfy your average mystery fan, though mystery purists may feel unfulfilled. There is a fun and sweet side story of Romance that continues throughout and read the series if for no other reason than Rose's Ladies maid and companion-the hilarious Daisy!

I hope Miss Chesney writes more in this charming series-5 stars.

This is the second in a series of murder mysteries set in Britain in the first decade of the 20th century featuring Captain Harry Cathcart and Lady Rose Summer.

To date there are four books in the series, which are

Snobbery with Violence
Hasty Death
Sick of Shadows
Our Lady of Pain

The author writes romantic fiction, mostly humorous regency romances plus one or two set in the Edwardian period, under the name Marion Chesney, and also writes mystery/detective stories such as the Agatha Raisin and Hamish MacBeth series under the name M.C. Beaton.

This Edwardian series is a something of a cross-over between the two - part romance and part murder mystery - and the books often have both names on the cover (usually something like "M.C. Beaton writing as Marion Chesney.)

In this second book, Lady Rose Summer gets so fed up with being an ornament to society that she wants to get a job, and arranges for both herself and her maid, Daisy, to work as typists at a bank. While she is working there, she learns that a young gentlemen, Freddy Pomfret, who has just been murdered, had banked large sums of money from other aristocrats. Had he been blackmailing them, and is that why he was murdered? So she goes the police and offers to help find the murderer.

However, her parents have other plans to deal with their wayward daughter - which unbeknown to them are a threat to her life ...

The main characters in the series are:

Captain Harry Cathcart, younger son of a Baron, has left the army after being injured in the Boer war. At the start of the first book he carried out a service for Lady Rose's father, the Earl of Hadfield, for which he gained a reputation as a fixer, and by the time of this book he has formally goes into business, being quite successful as the Edwardian equivalent of a Private Investigator.

Lady Rose Summer, only daughter of the Earl and Countess of Hadfield - slightly notorious as having briefly been involved with suffragettes. Chafes at the fact that society will not allow her a useful role, and constantly looking for something more challenging to do - fom working as a typist for a bank to helping the police solve murders.

Beckett - Harry's valet: in love with Daisy

Daisy - Lady Rose's maid. A former chorus girl, but when Captain Cathcart recruited her to play the role of a maid with a contagious disease as one of the escapades in the first book, Lady Rose recuited her to do the job for real. In love with Becket.

Detective Superintendent Kerridge - a senior policeman of humble origins and carefully supressed radical views, reinforced by the fact that whenever he has to interview an aristocrat they always threaten to report him to the Prime Minister. Plays Inspector Slack to Lady Rose's Miss Marple.

Despite that comparison, this is not in the same league as Agatha Christie as a detective story, and neither is it in the same league as Jane Austen as a romance. However, it is an amusing and entertaining light read.

This series is a very light version of the lovely books she writes as M.C. Beaton, which I adore. Perhaps these books were actually written early in her writing career? I did enjoy reading them but they are more of a teen series than adult. I will be donating them to my high school library and I am sure the teens will enjoy them.

Relatively amusing book, but not much of a mystery. The situations are rather contrived - every single time Lady Rose is in danger, Harry appears seemingly out of thin air and rescues her. It's all a little too convenient. I lost interest in "whodunit" pretty early in the book. The ever evolving relationship between Rose and Harry was the only interesting part of the book for me.

Diets are boring; working out is worse. Then you find you have to do something because your doctor is on your case. This plan actually works. I was introduced to it by a trainer at a gym and I have not just my own progress to monitor but also a bunch of other over-the-hill types in the same boat as me. We're stronger, slimmer, and walk proud. It gives step by step instructions on weight lifting how-tos, power bars, the usual what-to-eat/what-not-to-eat, multi-vitamins - absolutely everything. Besides being a good read, it motivates the reader into action.

Having long been a fan of Bill Phillips and devotee of Body For Life, I was intrigued by the idea of Body For Life For Women and bought a copy as a gift for my wife. Day One: I received the book in the mail. Day Two: My wife and I each read the book and discussed it. Day Three: I returned the book by mail. Why? Two reasons. First, the material about the four phases of a woman's life, although interesting, was quite useless to her exercise and nutrition program, and the rest of the material didn't offer more than that found in the original Body For Life. Second, we found the book not as well organized, presented, and illustrated as the original and it included many unnecessary charts and tables. Simply put, my wife decided she will stick with the Phillips original because it's complete and so much better.

Are you kidding me? Let me start by saying that I have not read the entire book- but I don't need to!! Ladies- don't sell yourself short...why would you NOT follow the original BFL plan? Eat clean and balanced, train hard, believe in yourself...it's that simple. The very IDEA of "BFL book for women" suggests that women cannot/will not succeed with the original plan....ridiculous. Get Bill Phillips book instead and go get 'em girl!!

Why bother with this when you can get the real meat of the program in Bill Phillip's Body For Life minus the negative subliminal messages?
Something I notice with women authors, ESPECIALLY when they write about women's health.. is they tend to predetermine what you will experience at what age.. ie, power of suggestion like "when you are past 40, your body won't digest as well as it did before" "When you get older, your bones start to become brittle" "When you get past 40 you tend to not have as much energy" YES.. she actually says this in her book!!!
PLEASE!!! Woman.. why are you trying to reiterate the negative media about women and their health?
AND....what really makes me mad is that she's using the good name of Body for Life to promote these subliminal messages!! You don't find any of that mess in the BFL book.
I, myself, am over 40 and I have experienced none of what she said I "should be" experiencing.. my energy level, health, physical and mental stamina are all there just as much as they were when I was 20... I never expected them not to be. If you start believing these messages you will start to give up.. because you think you're "supposed to at this age". In the long run, it's all up to you what you decide to believe and experience and what suggestions you let into your mind. Whether it is intentional or unintentional, beware of bad messages wrapped up in a "positive" looking package.

I really enjoyed this book. The book is filled with pictures of the cookies, and the recipes turn out well. The book contains a variety of recipes both in types, and some regional favorites. The book is well organized, and is a pleasure to read. If you are looking for a book that is full of good cookie recipes, this is the book for you.

Out of all the names in cookie books out there, Betty Crocker is one of the most, if not the most, famous. This fame was gained with good reason. Dozens of generations have grown on Betty's goodies and it shows in that she remains hugely popular throughout the years.

This book honors the Betty Crocker good name. Dozens of oh-so-yummy different recipes for eevryone to enjoy. The variety is quite astounding as she has more than enough cookies to fill up several chapters ranging from drop cookies, bar cookies, shaped cookies, kids cookies, etc. She even has a special chapter that's bound to become very useful in this day and age, dedicated to cookies for special diets. Here you'll find several treats for people on diets or with conditions such as diabetes or certain food allergies. I'd name some of the family's favorite recipes but there are really to many to mention!

Betty's instructions are, as usual, very simple to follow through and not only that, she even makes it easier on you by providing little tips on baking startegies, ingredient substitutions, etc. on almost all of the recipes. This makes it a cinch to turn out perfect cookies every time no matter what your baking skill is like.

I'd just like to highly recommend this book. It's a big favorite of my family and I've baked endlessly from it and not had anything fail me from it yet. They've been perfect as gifts, treats, to sell, and to cure the occasional boo-boo. This is as great as home-baked goodness can get!

Much better cookie books out there.......2004-11-28

I picked this book up at a store and ended up returning it. Some cute ideas but was disappointed by the many recipes that started with cake mixes. Tried the witches' broomstick cookie, cute but not a great tasting cookie. If you really like to bake cookies there are much better books out there.

A MUST Have For Any Baker!.......2004-04-26

I found this book in the library and today, after baking another pan of brownies, I had to own it! The German Chocolate Brownies got the higest ever Yum Factor rating from co-workers, I am not sure if that will stand once they taste the Milk Chocolate - Malted Brownies, baked with chopped Malted Milk Balls on top! I had never made homemade brownies, but after making the Ulitmate Brownie recipe I will never used a boxed mix again. These are just too easy and too good! The pictures are wonderful and cutting diagrams for getting the most out of each goodie are helpful. This book will have a place of honor among my other well used cook-books. Enjoy every tasty bite!

A book for anyone with a sweet tooth and a mixer!.......2003-08-14

I feel liked I gained weight just looking at the book. With mouth-watering pictures you will too. This delectable reference book is filled with simple recipes and step-by-step directions, quick tips, and nutritional information for every cookie and brownie. While my favorite is the traditional chocolate chip cookie, I found references for soft, crispy, chewy, nutty, and candy-filled cookies.

A good cookie cookbook, especially for "Moms".......2004-12-18

When I was a teen, one of my mother's friends lent us a Betty Crocker cookie cookbook. Once I saw the recipes inside, I just had to copy some of them down. They sounded absolutely delightful.

I am very happy that, years later, I found this cookbook which contains many of the same recipes. I excitedly bought it and couldn't wait to get it home to make some terrific cookies from it. Since then, I've made several recipes from this book. The lemon-lime cookies have a delicious icing and my husband loves them. I've also made the chocolate-cherry stripe cookies and they came out very cute. The orange madeleine recipe makes a very delicate, simple, almost cake-like cookie. I've had requests for that recipe from those who tasted it. This cookbook also has a number of charming recipes to make "cute" cookies for kids.

I would recommend this cookbook to most cooks. I think it makes a great "mom" cookbook because the recipes aren't too difficult and many of the cookies would appeal to kids. If you are looking for a sophisticated cookie cookbook, you would probably find one of Maida Heatter's cookbooks more to your liking. This cookbook is fun, though, and has some very tasty recipes!

My husband got this for me after I bungled about four batches of cookies in a row. I haven't bungled one since. The recipes range from the simple and traditional: the ultimate chocolate chip, the ultimate oatmeal, and the ultimate sugar cookies, to brownies and bars (the lemon bars are PERFECT), to more unusual: specialty and holiday/party cookies. If ever I need a recipe for krumkake or orange madeleines, pizzelles or springerle, I know where I'll go.

The recipes are well organized and easy to execute. The pictures are in mouth-watering color and plentiful. My little boy loves to page through it to look at all the yummy varieties. If I had one criticism, it would be that this book should really be spiral bound, for those of us who really USE our cookbooks in the kitchen!

Betty Crocker's Cookie Book.......2006-12-12

My son got this cookie recipe book through a school book order when he was very young, maybe 1st or 2nd grade. That was in the early 1980s and I am still using it, held together with tape. Glad to see copies are still available...It's the kind of book you don't want to stop using, with such a variety of cookie recipes and plenty of "favorites." Color illustrations of some of the cookies are a nice accompaniment to the recipes. Especially handy during the holidays but good year-round.

Classic cookie recipe book.......2002-05-17

One of the classic cookie recipe books of the 20th century. (Alomst every babyboomers mom had a Betty Crocker cookie recipe book). There are hundreds of traditional cookie favorites in this book as well as a variety of unique cookie recipes as well.
