Book Description

In the 1950s Chevrolet fans prayed for a savior, and Rex White answered. He took on big muscle cars, eventually winning both the 1960 Winston Cup Championship and the Driver of the Year title, and would later be named by NASCAR as one of their 50 all-time greatest drivers.

This memoir tells the story of Rex White's struggle to become a champion despite a poverty-ridden childhood and a devastating physical disability. A firsthand account of the early days of NASCAR and southern stock car racing, the text is based on extensive research and hundreds of hours of interviews with Rex White by writer Anne B. Jones. It includes tales by participants and fans and is peppered with anecdotes of a virtual who's who of NASCAR drivers, including Junior Johnson, Ned Jarrett, and a host of other drivers. The book is well illustrated, largely with photographs from Rex White's private collection.

5 out of 5 stars Gold Thunder.......2005-06-08

This book is wonderful! I don't know how to describe it. I'm not into sports and all that, but this was a riveting read.

In many autobiographies, it seems obvious that someone wrote the book for that person. But in Gold Thunder, Rex's no-punches-pulled account blends with Anne's seamless strorytelling to the point that one can almost imagine Rex sitting next to you.

Gold Thunder is very fast paced. You put the key in the ignition, rev it up a few times, and then watch it go. As the motor purrs to a stop and you turn the last page, you'll wonder where all the time went

Anyone will enjoy this book, including non race fans like myself. I'm sure that many aspects of it make more sense to race fans, but the book itself is a wonderful introduction to racing. I had no idea that NASCAR had such a colorful history. What a cast of characters! It's enough to make even the newest fans feel a bit of nostalgia.

5 out of 5 stars Wonder book, wonderful person.......2005-03-20

Here's another great auto racing book that will not only let you into the life of Rex White, it will teach you along the way. Stricken with polio at a young age, growing up in poverty and working countless hours on a farm never hindered little Rex White's passion to get behind the wheel of a race car. You'll find out why his father played a major role in his "race to finish, race to win" atttitude, and you'll meet all of the people who impacted Rex's life on his way to becoming a NASCAR champion. People like modified great Frankie Schneider, who became White's mentor, to partner Louie Clements are all given prime space in this book. Rex tells what racing was really like in the good old days, his love of Chevrolet, and the countless hours on the road traveling on nickles and dimes to get to the next race. A regular dinner was a package of Lance crackers. You'll also attend several wild parties honchoed by Clown Prince Joe Weatherly.
The best part of this book are the lessons learned thanks to a great work ethic. You'll laugh at the loads of funny characters that come into Rex's life, and then also deal with racing's dangers and the many tragic events that happened on the track. It's loaded with photos, tells of the great/not so great 1963 year at Daytona with his Mystery Motor 427 Chevy, GM's "on again, off again" policies on racing and becoming a member of the official Chevy racing teams.
Another can't miss book on the great sport of auto racing from the eyes of one of NASCAR's all-time best 50 drivers. He may have stood only 5'4" in stature, but this is a giant of a man when it comes to racing and winning in life.

5 out of 5 stars Gold Thunder a NASCAR Treasure.......2005-02-23

This well-written biography of Rex White, one of NASCAR's Fifty Living Legends, will keep you reading to the end to find out the outcome of all White's adventures in the 1950s and 60s on the early NASCAR circuit. White drove before the ovals were paved, and seems as comfortable on dirt tracks and on the road to the next race as anywhere in the world. Along the way, readers will learn as much about the stock car racing sport as readers of "Seabiscuit" found out about the life of the jockey and the history of the horse racing sport. This is a very enjoyable book with delightful accounts of team high jinks throughout the story and enough historical material to keep NASCAR fans arguing for years.

Book Description

FBI area supervisor Simmons asks the Navajo Tribal Police to help locate Andrew Thomas, a federal agent who disappeared after interrupting a Navajo ritual being performed by a group of medicine men or hataaliis. Simmons voices his displeasure when Special Investigator Ella Clah is assigned to the case; he believes that Ella became an FBI agent, more than a decade earlier, due to affirmative action-and that she left because the job was too tough for her.Ella ignores Simmons' pettiness, knowing that finding the missing man is the highest priority. She won't allow family issues to get in the way, so she asks her daughter's father to become a full-time parent for the duration of her investigation. She even questions her brother, a hataalii himself, about Agent Thomas. Could a medicine man have punished Thomas for disturbing the Sing? Startlingly, Ella receives a disturbing cell phone call that seems to be from Thomas himself. He's trapped in a dark place, lost and hurt. Ella realizes that time is running out. With the hataaliis cleared, Ella follows up on Thomas's investigation into Social Security fraud. She is disturbed to see evidence that seems to point to her old friend and Thomas's immediate superior, FBI agent Blalock. Could Blalock steal money and assault one of his own men? Ella can't believe it.The fraud trail leads through a maze of paperwork, banks, government offices, mortuaries, and into the Navajos' most dearly held-beliefs about death. Only by finding the truth-and fast-will Ella be able to save Andrew Thomas.

3 out of 5 stars Unusual detective .......2006-09-23

I've read most of the Ella Clah books by Aimee Thurlo. They're nice to read, different from the usual Raymond Chandler type detective. This gives a lot of details about Native American life. You could find that in a history book, but I'd rather read a novel, than a text book. I also like/read the Tony Hillerman books.

5 out of 5 stars Another Clah winner.......2006-04-07

Ella Clah is the best crime series going for people who like their mysteries solved by intelligence rather than with gunfire. (Not that Ella can't handle herself when the going gets tough -- she can).

One of the main reasons I love Aimee and David's novels is because I am captivated by Native American cultures. The depth of the Navajo culture fills this and the other Clah books to overflowing. I'd love to see Ella get together with Tony Hillerman's Joe Leaphorn or Jim Chee.

The social security fraud blends brilliantly with the Navajo culture's aversion to speaking about the dead and the disappearance of FBI agent Andrew Thomas adds spice to the story line.

I recommend this and all the Thurlo's other works for anyone who loves deeply developed characters, gorgeous scenic settings and Native American culture.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Ella Clah book...........2006-03-27

The Ella Clah series is one of my favorite law enforcement series! Ella is a Special Investigator for the Navajo Police Department. While each book in the series builds on the previous ones in terms of character development, each book is also a stand alone novel. This novel begins with Navajo Police Chief Big Ed Atcitty informing Ella that a new FBI agent, Andrew Thomas, is missing after interrupting a Sing. Interrupting a Sing is a major insult as it is construed as bringing misfortune to the participants; Ella knows that many of the Dineh will not support her in her search for Thomas as a result. Ella and her cousin and partner, Justine, begin backtracking over Thomas's last few days and his investigation into fraudelent social security checks. Their investigation leads to corruption within several government offices/agencies. The Thurlos do a fabulous job of explaining Navajo beliefs to those of us who are not Navajo as well as addressing the issues of death in a very sensitive but informative way. I highly recommend all of the Ella Clah books and was definitely not disappointed with this latest installment!

4 out of 5 stars Hey Hey for Ella Clay.......2006-03-17

I have always enjoyed all of the Thurlo's books. I love the character they have created in Ella Clay. In White Thunder she is focused on locating a federal agent the suspense and fast-moving plots the development of the investigation keep you turning each page and the action scenes keep the plot moving with some surprises adding to the exciting and surprise ending. I love the whodunits and Ella Clay series are one of the best. I love the insuing battle between good and evil and the fascinating cultural information. The Thurlos have joined Hillerman in giving us the excitement of Southwestern mysteries.

3 out of 5 stars White Thunder (Ella Clah).......2006-02-25

A well written mystery on the level of Tony Hillerman. Unfortunately this reader although enjoying the story almost felt as if the author had taken material from a Hillerman mystery and just changed the characters and placed them in like situations as related in many Hillerman mysteries. Hillerman is first and foremost the best in the relating of stories from the Southwest Indians.

4 out of 5 stars Informative look at 1940's China.......2007-03-05

This is an interesting narrative of China at the end of World War II and start of civil war by TIME Magazine correspondents Annalee Jacoby (1916-2002) and Theodore H. White (1915-1986). With their sympathies focused on the long-suffering Chinese populace, the authors show the political realities of that troubled land. Readers see how the Nationalist government of Chiang Kai-shek was beset by corruption, cruelty and incompetence. These problems contributed to disasters like famine in Henan Province, and led many to side with Mao's Communists. The authors also relate such events as the sacking of General Joe Stillwell, and the listless Nationalist opposition to the invading Japanese. By honestly reporting Nationalist incompetence and the possibility of a communist takeover (as happened in 1949), the authors soon found themselves in hot water. TIME publisher Henry Luce fired White for refusing to heed Luce's party line, and both authors were later accused of having helped "lose" China to the Reds.

Theodore White went on to a stellar career as a U.S. political writer with his superb MAKING OF THE PRESIDENT series, while Jacoby married author and media personality Clifton Fadiman. This is a worthy and realistic narrative, although not quite up the standards of most of White's later books.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for a Look at China Past and Present.......2006-12-15

I came across this book while going through a box of my grandmother's old books. What a find! As a student of Asian History, I found it fascinating and can't believe that I never read this while majoring in Asian Studies (shame on you San Diego State!). It is very well written and a true asset to anyone studying China's past and what lead up to the Coummunist revolt.

3 out of 5 stars A Valuable Personal Narrative of Troubled Times.......2005-12-01

White has for many years been noted for his observations of current political affairs. His "Making of the President..." works are well thought of by many students of American politics of the period from 1960 on. But he did not spring fully formed from obscurity. He perfected his trade in partnership with Annalee Jacoby in China from 1939 to 1946 as a reporter for Time Magazine. Henry Luce, the publisher of Time, Life, and Fortune, all major and widely circulated and influential, was a prominent member of the notorious China Lobby, composed of Americans with family and commercial ties to China.
In that period Time did not give bylines to their reporters so White did not receive public notice for his work until this book appeared. Even though Luce was a political conservative he gsve the liberal White much leeway in his reporting. White's sympathies were with the long suffering Chinese people, and it did not matter to him which of the contending factions won out so long as the people's lot was improved.
This work summarizes and preserves in a readily available form the reporting. I have found in contrast that many valuable reports of the conduct of the Mexican Revolution have never been gathered snd republished, thus the value of this work as first hand reporting and "real time" personal narrative is apparent.

3 out of 5 stars Good writing, bad history.......2004-12-15

Make no mistake, Teddy White was an excellent writer. His writings communicates vividly and sympathetically. He makes you see what he sees and what he feels. He also gives you a feeling of what that age was like from the eye of an American reporter. However, White was no more than a man of his profession and his times. He did not have the hindsight of history and what would come out of the triumph of Chinese communism. Therefore this work is a good source material for historical research but should not be regarded as a good book of history. The work is remarkable for what it covers, but also remarkable for what it did not cover. For example, he would use two sentence to describe the heroic defense of Hengyang, but he would spend two pages describing how pathetic the Chinese soldiers were. He even gave us the wrong name for the general who defended Hengyang. He would discuss about the corruption that took away big portions of American aid. He did not discuss how Treasury Secretary Morgenthau withheld vital aid from China, after he agreed to provide the aid. A lot of these facts he probably did not know at the time. I would suggest reading Lin Yutang's book Vigil of a Nation along with this book. It will give you a more balanced view of the complexity of the situation. I am still waiting for a good book that will provide the definitive history of this very important era.

5 out of 5 stars A great book with a WWII contemporary viewpoint.......2004-05-11

I first encountered Thunder Out of China in the late 1960s after Lin Yutang caused me to have a yearning to know more about the China of the early 20th Century. Theodore White was one of my early reads. Because of the rabid anti-communism of the times I found myself wondering how White managed to keep himself out of the clutches of the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, writing such things. This book was responsible for the historical amoeba of WWII gradually spreading through my life for several years.

Read it. This is a side of WWII, Mao, Chang, Vinegar Joe Stillwell from personal acquaintance and observation, you won't get anywhere else.

I have read all the White Indian series. They were great. However, I would like to know if Donald Porter is going to continue the series or is it the end.

Renegade was probably one of my most favorites, following Renno to England one minute and through the forests the next. I have a copy of each book of the series which I started collecting when I was 17 and have read each one at least 4 times. It really makes you feel like your part of the story.

5 out of 5 stars Hooray for the White Indian.......2000-06-06

I have read twenty seven of Porter's White Indian Series and have been enthralled with the content. I have not read Creek Thunder because it has been unavailable. Porter's methods of entwining history and Fiction is facinating. I am now re-reading the series for the third time, and like other reviewers it is very hard to put them down

5 out of 5 stars intense, exciting, as if you were present with Renno........1999-10-13

One of the most exciting books/series I have read. It is like living as a brother to the White Indian. I could not put the book down. I wonder if there will be a follow up to this book.

5 out of 5 stars informative and gripping.......1998-09-30

I have read only one other series that compares to this one. I feel like i am right there with these characters, the way he describes things. I love these kinds of books and would recommend them to anyone who likes history!!

This book really moves! Especially if motocross racing moves you!
The mystery aspect is very well done...its a nail-biter to the second last chapter and even had this adult reader wondering.
Hats off to David Gillett for a great first novel.
I can't say that I cried or wept, but I liked it...a lot!
Great, especially for boys 10 - 14 years old.
The "Great Reptile Race" is a sequel and even better, as far as I'm concerned. Then again, I'd love to live on an estate in Britain...and be involved in a mystery!

This mission will lead Kev down the darkest path of his life and the outcome will have unexpected consequences!

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very dark humor........2006-08-01

Garth Ennis is good at combining serious topics with satire. Here, he is using Kev as a kind of symbol for every sucker who has volunteered to become cannon fodder in wars whose causes he knows nothing about. Kev is the absolute antithesis of the glamorous James Bond -type agent, and despite his unappealing nature it is hard not to feel sympathy for him.
In this episode of the Authority, Kev is finally confronted with a task so awful that not even he is willing to obey orders, and faces betrayal from the only family he has had since growing up -his teammates in the regiment.

1 out of 5 stars Another Weird Tale.......2006-07-13

I was not too fond of the first Kevin stories (collected in KEV) but decided to give this one a chance. I don't think I made the right decision. In this volume, Kevin once again finds himself working with The Authority. The Authority has been attacked by a goofy, pin-headed creature that claims it is a vagina. It then throws a pie and the superhero is out of action (nice Alien parallels here). When Midnighter becomes the only Authority member to escape, he enlists the help of Kev.

Kev, as we know, is an extreme homophobe and has difficulty relating to Midnighter and Apollo. This has not changed. As the two work together, we learn a little more about Kev and the factors that have helped to shape his life. But eventually the crisis is solved and Kev goes his own way.

While it was sort of nice getting the Kev character fleshed out a little more, it is just more flesh I don't like. What little humor the earlier Kev stories had they seem missing from this volume. The goofiness of the story and the unlikeable Kevin combine to once again create a story where I have to wonder why it was written in the first place. The Kev stories seem more like a parody from the pages of Mad or Cracked than actual canonical Authority tales. My advice is to avoid this one unless you liked the earlier Kev stories.

          ADHD • Anxiety • Nonverbal • Communication • Disorders • Visual/Spatial • Disorders • Executive Functioning Difficulties

As any parent, teacher, coach, or caregiver of a learning disabled child knows, every learning disability has a social component. The ADD child constantly interrupts and doesn't follow directions. The child with visual-spatial issues loses his belongings. The child with a nonverbal communication disorder fails to gesture when she talks. These children are socially out of step with their peers, and often they are ridiculed or ostracized for their differences. A successful social life is immeasurably important to a child's happiness, health, and development, but until now, no book has provided practical, expert advice on helping learning disabled children achieve social success.

For more than thirty years, Richard Lavoie has lived with and taught learning disabled children. His bestselling videos and sellout lectures and workshops have made him one of the most respected experts in the field. Rick's pioneering techniques and practical strategies can help children ages six to seventeen

It's So Much Work to Be Your Friend answers the most intense need of parents, teachers, and caregivers of learning disabled children -- or anyone who knows a child who needs a friend.

"As any parent, teacher, coach, or caregiver of a learning disabled child knows, every learning disability has a social component. The ADD child constantly interrupts conversations and doesn't follow directions. The child with visual-spatial issues loses his belongings and causes his siblings to be late to school. The child with paralinguistic difficulties appears stiff and wooden because she fails to gesture when she talks. These children are socially out of step with their classmates and peers, and often they are ridiculed or ostracized for their differences. A successful social life is immeasurably important to a child's happiness, health, and development, but until now, no book has provided practical, expert advice on helping learning disabled children achieve social success. For more than thirty years, Richard Lavoie has lived with and taught learning disabled children. His bestselling PBS videos, including How Difficult Can This Be?: The F.A.T. City Workshop, and his sellout lectures and workshops have made him one of the most popular and respected experts in the field. At last, Rick's pioneering techniques for helping children achieve a happy and successful social life are available in book form. It's So Much Work to Be Your Friend offers practical strategies to help learning disabled children ages six through seventeen navigate the treacherous social waters of their school, home, and community. Rick examines the special social issues surrounding a wide variety of learning disabilities, including ADD and other attentional disorders, anxiety, paralinguistics, visual-spatial disorders, and executive functioning. Then he provides proven methods and step-by-step instructions for helping the learning disabled child through almost any social situation, including choosing a friend, going on a playdate, conducting a conversation, reading body language, overcoming shyness and low self-esteem, keeping track of belongings, living with siblings, and adjusting to new settings and situations. Perhaps the most important component of this book is the author's compassion. It comes through on every page that Rick feels the intensity with which children long for friends and acceptance, the exasperation they can cause in others, and the joy they feel in social connection. It's So Much Work to Be Your Friend answers the most intense yet, until now, silent need of the parents, teachers, and caregivers of learning disabled children -- or anyone who is associated with a child who needs a friend. 5 out of 5 stars Every Teacher Should Read .......2007-09-03

As I read the book I came away with loads of useful strategies to use when dealing with students that have social issues. I highly recommend this book to parents and teachers!

5 out of 5 stars Another hit from Rick LaVoie!.......2007-06-27

I bought this book at the recommendation of my child's pediatric psychologist- it is a great help for parents of kids with learning disabilities and other challenges. I am familiar with Rick LaVoie from his other works and his incredible video series called "Fat City", in which he shows parents and teachers just what it is like to walk a mile in the shoes of the kids who deal with these challenges daily. I would highly recoomend both this book and the video series to anyone whose child is having trouble with social skills and/or facing a learning disability.

This book is what I've been looking for: a book that teaches you HOW to teach social skills and organization skills for kids that just don't pick it up from interactions in everyday life. It's made a big difference in our everyday family and school life for my 2 ADHD/LD kids. My thanks to Rick Lavoie!

5 out of 5 stars Read this book!.......2006-06-18

Writing as someone who has lived with learning disabilities for nearly 50 years now, I cannot say strongly enough that I sincerely wish all of my teachers and parents had read this book. I will go a little further than that---I wish the pastoral counselor, psychologist, and psychiatrists that I have dealt with as an adult would read this book.

This book brought back memory after memory of times that I have been misunderstood (and rejected) by those around me, and also times that I have greatly misunderstood social and job-related incidents (and acted inappropriately as a result). Some of the long-lasting psychological damage that I have had as a result could have been alieviated if only those around me had been aware of the difficulties that I was having (and continue to have).

Notice that I did not say that the misunderstandings and social errors I make would have stopped. I don't think they would have.
The book does not offer any cure-alls. Its biggest contribution is to increase the understanding of the social ramifications of learning disabilities. I have found that very few normal people have any understanding of this at all; and their response can be quite damaging.

3 out of 5 stars Good as far as it goes.......2005-12-24

This book provides what sound like good tips for helping a child struggling with social skills. Whether they work, I really can't say, as applying everything here would be the work of a lifetime.

My major complaint about the book is the lack of research showing that this approach really works. Lavoie mentions research findings in one or two places in the text, but mostly he seems to be relying on his own experience working with kids. This is supplemented with what he admits is nothing more than "conventional wisdom" and "generally accepted rules of thumb". Some of Lavoie's "conventional wisdom" struck me as highly unlikely, such as his statement that child development is generally smoother in larger families. The research I've seen on the subject tends to show that only children generally tend to do better than children from larger families.

My son has Asperger's syndrome (a mild form of autism). After 8 years of trying to help my boy, I am beginning to get a little weary of all the advice I receive. I've spent a fortune on therapists of various types, each one pushing his own agenda. Where's the proof that Lavoie's approach works with anyone other than Lavoie's own patients? For that matter, how do I know that Lavoie's own patients really improved their social skills, compared to other kids whose parents tried some other way? There are a lot of charlatans out there preying on the hopes of desperate parents. I wish I knew whether or not Lavoie is one of them.

            Book Description

Few people would dispute the old Florentine proverb "Even a bedroom slipper tastes good when it's fried," but many try to stay away from deep-fried foods because of the at foods absorb during cooking.

When the technique has been mastered, however, deep-fried foods can -- and should -- be crisp, light, and delectably nongreasy. As fryers gain popularity, it's even easier to deep-fry at home, and now Phyllis Kohn shows you how to achieve flawless frying feats every time.

The Best Fryer Cookbook Ever delves into the hows and whys of deep-frying: the best (and potentially healthiest) oils to use, correct temperatures and frying times (shorter cooking ensures less greasiness), technical tips for using your deep fryer, and safety guidelines.

Your kids won't eat vegetables? Try French-Fried Sweet Potato Sticks andFried Okra. Think doughnuts only come from a store? An entire chapter is devoted to making perfect versions of these beloved goodies at home, from old-Fashioned Cake Doughnuts to Beignets, jelly Doughnuts, and Orange Crullers. All the classics are here, including such popular favorites as Buffalo Wings, Chicken-Fried Steak, Hush Puppies, and Popcorn Shrimp. From unusual fried breads, such as sweet Churros and indian Pappadums, to fried desserts, such as Mexican Buenuelos with Anise Sugar and Chinese Candied Apples, Kohn brings the world of deep frying into your kitchen.

This is a pretty good book. It gives you the basics on deep fryers (makes and models, safety, helpful hints, ect...) Lots of good and new recipies that I never knew you could do in a deep fryer. So now it doesn't just sit around until I do fries, I can now use it for other things too. There are recipies in here for apetizers, breads, meats, deserts, and much more. I really enjoyed it.
