Book Description
In the third novel of her captivating foxhunting series, Rita Mae Brown welcomes readers back for a final tour of a world where most business is conducted on horseback–and stables are de rigueur for even the smallest of estates. Here, in the wealth-studded hills of Jefferson County, Virginia, even evil rides a mount.
The all-important New Year’s Hunt commences amid swirling light snow. It is the last formal hunt of the season; therefore, participation is required no matter how hungover riders are from toasting the midnight before. On this momentous occasion, “Sister” Jane Arnold, master of the foxhounds, announces her new joint master and the new president of the Jefferson Hunt. And her choices will prove to be no less than shocking.
The day’s festivities are quickly marred, though, by what appears on the surface to be an unrelated tragedy. Sam Lorillard, former shining star and Harvard Law School alum, lies dead of a stab wound on a baggage cart at the old train station, surrounded by the outcasts and vagabonds who composed his social circle at the end of life. No one can remember when Sam started drinking, but the downward spiral was swift–and seemingly deadly.
Murder is followed by scandal when Sister Jane discovers dishonest hunting practices going on in a neighboring club. Unsure whether to turn a blind eye or report the infringement to the proper authority, Sister and her huntsman, Shaker Crown, decide to investigate a little further, with the help of their trusty hounds. But when they come a little too close to the staggering truth–and uncover an unforeseen connection to Lorillard’s murder–they realize they might not survive to see the next New Year’s Hunt.
Intricate, witty, and full of the varied voices of creatures both great and small, Full Cry is an astute reminder that even those with the bluest of blood still bleed red.

Customer Reviews:
Good Read!.......2007-07-03
I have been a great fan of Rita Mae Brown (and Speaky Pie Brown) for many years. I am enjoying the Foxhunting Mysteries trementously. I love the characters, the plots, the education I am getting on the sport of fox hunting, and Rita Mae Brown's personal philosophy on many subjects. I highly recommend this series, if you like books that are thought provoking as well as entertaining. Full Cry is the third book in the series. I have read all five of the books now available and am anxiously awaiting the next great story about the Jefferson Hunt Club.
Ridiculous climax.......2006-07-10
I listened to this on CD in my car...driving around western Virginia.
-The author is not a very good reader...her rhythm/intonation is off...but I didn't mind the flubs at all. It's nice to have a reader that sounds like a real person. And by having her read it, the we avoid the distraction of having the technical terms being pronounced incorrectly. (Although I'm not used to hearing "hooves" rhyming with "moves".)
-It's a matter of taste, but talking animals (or babies, for that matter) have no appeal whatsoever for me. Ugh! And if they did talk, no horse that I've ever ridden would have said, "Are you all right?" when I fell off. I believe they'd say, "Aaaaaaaaah...at last. Hey, there's some grass!"
-Being a woman of a certain age, I liked the Sister character, (although I don't believe she still had her figure at 72). But the denouement---and Sister's actions in it---was utterly improbable and illogical. Gimme a break!
Full Cry //Audio (I almost did).......2006-06-23
I have always enjoyed Rita Mae Brown's work. That being said, and yes, this story line does wear abit thin, but the worst, unforgivable sin is that she read the story herself. It was awful. Several times she will start a sentence, only to stop and restart after a few words. There was no feeling of character in her voice. Yoy can hear her swallow and clear her throat, so I guess it's the production values that are the biggest offender.
Full Cry.......2006-03-17
Having read the other books in this fox hunting series, I can say this one is not up to the standard. The plot line is not as well defined as in the other books. It is rather sketchy to be honest.
While Rita Mae Brown fans will probably read it anyway, it is not a book that will draw in new fans.
disappointing.......2006-02-13
We know Rita Mae can write. I remember one Thanksgiving years ago reading parts of one of her books aloud to my sisters and all of laughing so hard we cried. She had captured reality and presenting it wondrously. This book however shows none of that talent. Most of the dialog comes across as extremely stilted and unrealistic.

The Ransomed Heart.......2007-03-08
This has made a profound change in my life. I ask God to give me his daily blessing of a reading and open the book at random pages and read.
It hits home on what happens that day to me and the message becomes clearer. If we listen, he will talk to us and bless us.
More of the same - okay stuff but repeated.......2006-01-03
I really like Eldridge and what he has to say about the things of the heart and the spiritual side. This one seems like the marketers at his publication company must be trying to mild the gravy train and they got me but I'll be careful the next time. If you are a reader of Eldridge then all in this book are just excerpts from previous works so not good. If you are a first time reader then it is worth the price.
Areminder or a great introduction........2005-12-20
John is currently one of the controversial voices in Christianity. Yet not in the way most are; those on the left and those on the right dislike him equally. If you do a Google search on John Eldredge and Wild at Heart, you will get sites praising him as a new voice for Christianity and for men, and just as many condemning him and his writings as heretical. John is best known for his book Wild at Heart, which has been sweeping through churches across North America and the world. On the community forum on his ministry's website, (http://www.ransomedheart.com/forum/default.aspx) there are members from around the world.
What is this book about? It is a devotional reader, it has 365 meditations or excerpts from his other writings, The Sacred Romance, Wild At Heart, Waking the Dead, Journey of Desire, Epic and Captivating. This book would be a great primer on John's thought or as a reminder for a fan who has read his works. It's like borrowing a book from a friend who has underlined the best passages and you skim those to get the guts of the book. This is "the guts" of his full progression of thought.
You might ask what is the basic idea of his works? I would say that it is three-fold; first that our hearts are good, second that we need to learn to listen to our hearts, and finally we need to be living from our true hearts or our truest self. Waking The Dead begins with a quote "The Glory of God is man fully alive," Saint Irenaeus. One of the things I like about this book, and all of John's writings, is that he draws from such varied sources; he loves to quote from movies and use movie illustrations, and he draws from a wide range of Christian sources- the desert fathers, Thomas Merton, C.S. Lewis, Chesterton and many, many more.
This book would be great to get a feel for what the controversy is all about, or to keep beside your bed and randomly open each night for a little reminder that your heart is good and that it matters t
The Shameless Heart - Another Cynical Attept to Fleece the Flock.......2005-11-02
Accused of basically writing the same book again and again, Eldridge has outdone himself. Only this time he has simply cut and paste from his previous books, and called it a devotional. This just means that it is the book equivalent of a greatest hits album. I have had to read his books before in my church. They are like the old light beer commercials, everything that you wanted in a God, and less!
Once again:
+Same Material
+New Packaging
+Easily digestable pablum for spiritual infants.
+Only available in hardback. With a list price of $22. Why is it that Christian publishers only put out hardcovers for which they can charge more money? I think that I answered my own question. Eldridge would claim that it is a ministry, but it is the modern day equivalent of being a moneychanger. This devotional is just another cynical attempt to take believers, by getting them to buy the same old thing. If you are looking for some depth, try Understanding God's Will by Kyle Lake.
An introduction to Eldridge's practice of "seeing with the eyes of our hearts".......2005-11-02
"You will not think clearly about your life until you think mythically. Until you see with the eyes of your heart," wrote John Eldredge in his book, WAKING THE DEAD. The words can be read again in his latest book, THE RANSOMED HEART, a collection of devotional readings culled from his many popular titles including WILD AT HEART, THE SACRED ROMANCE, and EPIC.
Helping people to see "with the eyes of their hearts" is a good way to describe Eldredge's mission. As a survey of his work to this point, THE RANSOMED HEART is both a good introduction to Eldredge's take on life and spirituality, and a helpful compendium for those who have already grown to appreciate his thoughts. As this reading from Day 230 articulates, Eldredge advocates a kind of Spirit-enabled empowerment that he hopes will help people more fully engage the world, relationships, and God:
"The deeper reason we fear our own glory is that once we let others see it, they will have seen the truest us, and that is nakedness indeed. We can repent of our sin. We can work on our 'issues.' But there is nothing to be 'done' about our glory. It's so naked. It's just there --- the truest us. It is an awkward thing to shimmer when everyone else around you is not, to walk in your glory with an unveiled face when everyone else is veiling his. For a woman to be truly feminine and beautiful is to invite suspicion, jealousy, misunderstanding. A friend confided in me, 'When you walk into a room, every woman looks at you to see --- are you prettier than they are? Are you a threat?'
And that is why living from your glory is the only loving thing to do. You cannot love another person from a false self. You cannot love another while you are still hiding. You cannot love another unless you offer her your heart. It takes courage to live from your heart. My friend Jenny said just the other day, 'I desperately want to be who I am. I don't want the glory that I marvel at in others anymore. I want to be that glory which God set in me.'
Finally, our deepest fear of all...we will need to live from it. To admit we do have a new heart and a glory from God, to begin to let it be unveiled and embrace it as true --- that means the next thing God will do is ask us to live from it. Come out of the boat. Take the throne. Be what he meant us to be. And that feels risky...really risky. But it is also exciting. It is coming fully alive. My friend Morgan declared, 'It's a risk worth taking.'"
Eldredge has been accused of repeating himself in his books, but this liability becomes an asset in this collection as the themes of the daily devotions compliment each other nicely despite being drawn from several different books. In addition to his collected work, THE RANSOMED HEART also includes three prayers that Eldredge has found helpful in his own personal spiritual life.
But other less-than-positive critiques of his work are still valid, even in this format. Chief among them is that Eldredge's ideas appear to stem from a heavy diet of movies and canoeing more than from Scripture itself. His ideas seem to be shaped more by Braveheart than the Bible. And indeed, his references to "supporting" Scripture are often taken wildly out of context.
Additionally, his vision of what it means to be masculine is largely informed by his own love of the outdoors and adventure sports like rappelling. Those with more sedentary passions are virtually ignored. Similarly, his discussion about beauty and femininity (drawn from CAPTIVATING, the book he co-authored with his wife, Stasi) seems to be rooted in a very specific experience of loving (and being) a beautiful woman. Those with other experiences might find little that speaks to their own lives.
Having said that, Braveheart is a great movie. And what Eldredge has to say isn't heretical, even if it is just one person's vision of what constitutes a well-lived life. Indeed, as millions of readers can attest, Eldredge's vision --- the value he places on relationships and living with a fearless generosity --- can be inspiring and regenerative.

The Search for Her Missing Brother Becomes a Fight for Her Life [book title]
An international jewel thief known only as the Catbird breaks into a lavish Denver mansion during a reception for a British earl. His daring robbery is interrupted by Rosalind Hayes, who becomes the only living person able to recognize him. Rosalind, however, is more interested in finding her missing brother than worrying over possible danger from the Catbird.
It is only after Rosalind's life is threatened that she reluctantly joins forces with Adam Moreaux, a Pinkerton operative who has been chasing the Catbird for years. Together they discover that both her brother and the Catbird have unwittingly become linked by the disappearance of the Petrovna parue, a famous setting of Russian jewels. Torn by fear for her brother, a growing attraction for Moreaux, and a fascination with the notorious thief, Rosalind's pursuit leads her and Moreaux to a dangerous confrontation on the heights of the Rocky Mountains.
Customer Reviews:
Thoroughly enjoyable.......2000-05-17
This is the first book I've read by Sara Mitchell; I saw it at the library and checked it out because it looked intriguing. I'm so glad I did! The relationship between Adam and Rosalind was wonderfully portrayed, in spite of the fact that they were complete opposites. I even found the subplot of Cat easy to to believe. If you're looking for a good romantic suspense novel, this is a must read!
Sara Mitchell's best book so far!.......1999-07-08
For me, this is Sara Mitchell's best book to date. The plot is fascinating, with lots of surprises. But most of all, the characters just step right off the pages. Adam is a great hero, but not perfect (besides, how can you resist a man who keeps a cougar for a pet?), and he and Rosalind make a great team. They're romantic, smart, and even funny together. I've read all the Pinkerton books so far and enjoyed them all, but this one is the best.
Can't wait to see what she does next.
A pleasant, fast-paced read...true to Mitchell's style........1999-06-29
The story of how Rosalind Hayes' missing brother dovetails with the notorious Catbird jewel thief and Adam Moreaux, the Pinkerton operative trying to track him down is nicely done, in the style and with the detail I've come to expect from Sara Mitchell. At first, the storylines seem quite divergent, but she brings them together plausibly, all the while allowing a budding romance to bloom slowly, with time and faith. The added intrigue regarding Rosalind's fascination with the notorious jewel thief seems almost gratuitous, though it does serve a purpose in the end for the patient reader. Small details about the countryside, the secondary characters, and the brief political/societal notes flesh out the story, which flicks quickly between various points of views and locales. A nice job and a worthwhile, edifying way to spend a few hours!

Customer Reviews:
Must for those who want to learn Asanas!.......2007-08-21
This book is really excellent. I agree with most of the reviews that are written here. Since my views are about the same as many of the other reviews here, I am not writing anything special here.
Must buy.......2007-07-17
I have had this book for some time now. It has a brief intro to the philosophy of yoga before diving into the asanas. There are hundreds of asanas described in excruciating detail. A most valuable reference. In the appendices he gives out programs with increasing difficulty for you to practise. What he thinks you can cover in a few weeks is actually something u will master in a few years. Also asanas are prescribed for people with specific illnesses. great book!
GREAT BOOK.......2007-06-20
Tells you everything you need to know about Modern Yoga, it gives a physical view of the poses and even the back ground. I really enjoy this book.
The essence of yoga.......2007-05-17
The best reference on yoga poses with thorough explanations of how to get in, be in and get out of each pose safely and effectively. Also provides excellent context for how poses relate to one another and progress one to the other. Though Iyengar yoga instruction is the key to learning how to practice yoga properly, this book is your best friend after class and when conducting a home-based practice.
Excellent yoga book.......2007-05-08
I have just started practicing yoga and I think that this is an excellent book for a beginner. I like the fact that each asana is explained in such detail and that the benefits of each asana are also enumerated. It ia an outstanding companion to my Iyengar yoga classes. I read some of it almost every day.
Product Description
All the forms of meditation--all the asanas-- are woven together by the breath the way a weaver binds together threads on a loom. The breath not only links postures together, as in Vinyasa Yoga, but it is the life force, called prana, that animates.
Now available The Thread of Breath
The Second Edition of Tias and Surya Littles book. Previously titled Sthira Sukham Asanam
Customer Reviews:
inaccurate information.......2004-03-15
Margaret Visser's advice has been quoted on Sage Asian Advice on Soup Etiquette, and the advice looks to me entirely misleading. It reads: "A Chinese banquet often begins with fruit and ends with soup." Being a Chinese myself and have attended numerous banquets, I have never seen fruit being served at the beginning and soup at the end. It will help if Ms. Visser can clarify what kind of banquet she had actually observed or attended. The regular way is soup being served close to the beginning after the cold and hot appetizers, and fruit is served at the very end together with dessert.
Don't Judge a Book by its Cover.......2001-08-02
I can't imagine doing the research for this tome. And I don't use the word tome lightly. This book is chock full of little tidbits of trivia that are fascinating, but that you will probabaly never need nor have an opportunity to share. What is the origin of the word, 'menu?' How did the fork evolve; how did table cloths come into use? "The ritual of Dinner" digs down to the tiniest of details, the most remote possible history and the widest variety of customs. If you expect such questions when you appear on Jeopardy, or when quizzed by your mother-in-law to be, this book is thorough and very well written. My, is it thorough!
But, is this the information that you seek? I was looking for a book that went into more detail than Amy Vanderbilt in the proper placement and use of dishes, utensils and glassware. I wanted to know the difference between a 'rim soup' bowl and a 'cream soup' bowl, and which spoon goes with which dish as well as which type of soup. Although some of this book was fascinating reading, it didn't really answer my questions. Well, maybe some of them, but you have to research and work at finding any guidelines. Visser insists that you learn the why and history of a ritual before letting you in on it's current practical use, and how it may be applied.
If you are not a museum curator and just want to set a proper table, I suggest you turn to "The Art of the Table" by Susanne Von Drachenfuls instead. And no, I'm still not sure about the soup bowls.
Exploration of table manners thru-out time and the world........1998-07-11
This is a fascinating book. Everyone who reads a bit of it wants to own it. You can learn lots of trivia and impress your friends as well as develop a whole new outlook on food, eating, dinner parties, etc.
