Book Description

There's no evidence that Sitting Marsh's munitions factory was bombed by the Luftwaffe, so it's up to Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton to discern who in the sleepy little community sabotaged the plant and killed the owner.

4 out of 5 stars Fire When Ready.......2005-10-15

I liked this much better than Berried Alive. I was happy to see Earl return but it was a pretty good conclusion that he would..
I think Ms Kingsbury did very well with this series set in the WW11 with the Landed Gentry and all it's quirks.
Let's hope there is something else as interesting coming from her pen. ?

4 out of 5 stars Good Historical Mystery.......2004-12-15

In this mystery, set in the small town of Sitting Marsh in England during World War II, residents are not happy when a munitions factory is built near the town. So unhappy, in fact, that Douglas McNally, manager of the plant, shows Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton some threatening letters he has received. When McNally and a cleaning woman are found dead after a fire at the factory, the Fire Marshall rules the fire an accident, which satisfies the police, but Elizabeth isn't convinced, especially when she hears the victims bodies were found inside a locked office. She decides to investigate the deaths herself, but unless she's careful, things might get too hot for her!

This is another delightful cozy mystery in Kate Kingsbury's Manor House series. The mystery itself is slight, there aren't that many suspects and it's pretty obvious who the murderer is. But I read the mysteries more for the characters and what is going on in their lives. Elizabeth is a good strong heroine, although a little too full of her "position" in the village at times. Fans of the series will be glad to hear that Earl is back, but you'll have to read the book to find out how and why! Violet and Martin, are a bit of a cliché as the faithful household retainers, but Kingsbury writes them in such a way that you care for them and actually hold your breath when Martin walks down the stairs, hoping he'll make it. And Martin is involved in some of the most humorous moments in the book, making a reader wonder if he is as dotty as he sometimes seems to be. Housemaids Sadie and Polly show what life was like for young girls in war torn England.

This is a good book for fans of cozy, humorous mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars A fun to read amateur sleuth historical mystery .......2004-11-01

During World War II in England, the villagers have seen too much change in too short a time to want any further disruptions in their way of life. Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton of the Manor House subtly soothes ruffled feathers of the locals, tired by food rationing, the invasion of the Americans quartered in British homes, and the curfews. Even Elizabeth the great cannot get the residents to accept the new munitions factory run by Douglas McNally.

At the opening ceremony, Elizabeth has the honor of cutting the ribbon, but is taken aback when Douglas informs her that he is receiving death threats in the mail. Shortly thereafter, a fire breaks out at the factory killing Douglas and a charwoman. Following a rather quick inquiry, the fire marshal declares an accident occurred, but Elizabeth wonders in light of the letters whether murder happened. She learns that the victims were locked inside an office unable to get out. Totally connived that murder took place, Elizabeth intends to prove that and uncover the identity of the culprit.

FIRE WHEN READY is a fun to read amateur sleuth historical mystery that pays attention to period detail so that the readers can taste the real frustrations, fears, sacrifices, and hardships of villagers in England during the Great War. The heroine is a plucky strong willed character who watches over her villagers like a mother hen; thus investigating arson and murder in Elizabeth's mind is part of protecting her "children". Kate Kingsbury treats her readers with a charming tale that will send her satisfied audience seeking previous novels in this fine series.

2 out of 5 stars sundrey unexciting collection of assorted naval histories.......1997-12-18

If you're looking for accounts of Naval actions of the Spanish American war, then you won't find them any place else. Otherwise this book is a collection of Naval stories possibly not published anywhere else AND for good reason. What this book needed was some more background research to add some zip to these stories. Unfortunately that wasn't done & this is merely a collection of incidents. This is from a person who even finds the 14th century exciting.

Marja was born a child of the fens, young, beautiful, and free. Her days were spent working with her poor family and communing with the ethereal olfs-the playful spirits of the land-until Lexander, a procurer for the pleasure house of Vidaris, comes to her small village and purchases her from her father.

At Vidaris, Marja is schooled as a slave in the arts of seduction and carnal delight-and discovers her nature as a true submissive. But when Lexander grants Marja her freedom, she finds herself swept away in a torrent of betrayal and intrigue that threatens her beloved land. And Marja will have to use all her strength, skills, and cunning to survive in the war that is about to engulf them all.

1 out of 5 stars To Serva and to Snore........2007-08-05

S&M should not be this boring.

I borrowed this from a friend, who even admitted herself that she couldn't bring herself to finish it. I wasn't even stalwart enough to get to the point were she gave up in frustration. When I'm reading through a laundry list of kinks, and the scenes they're portrayed in are so bland that I'm not stimulated on any level? You've done something wrong.

But perhaps the first hurdle I wasn't able to surmount were the NAMES in this dismal book. "Lexander"? "Hel*a*na"? A god named "Loji" who gives birth to an eight legged horse? Exsqueeze me? Is it just me, or did she just pull an "Eragon" here? We just change one letter in a common name, and now all of a sudden, it's exotic and otherworldly? Wrong! But yes, the Eragon reference is deliberate, because this is purple-shafted prose on a par with the teenaged writer of that equally lame book.

How the writer of this is receiving so much acclaim for such a lackluster title, is just evidence that the kinky community has little else to heap it's accolades upon. So of course, the lackluster get to be a big fish in a small pond.

            1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous!!.......2007-07-23

This book was ridiculous! I had no emotion about either of the main characters. I could have cared less what happened to them. I don't usually stop reading a book before the end, but this is the first one I've done that to in many many years.

5 out of 5 stars To serve and submit.......2007-07-08

A wonderful story, this book centers around a girl who is submissive to the core and can see the spirits of the land. Sold willingly into service at a pleasure house she soon learns love at her masters touch and fear from his people. There are a few things that I personally would critique, but over all this book is definatly one to place upon the shelves and enjoy at leisure.

            3 out of 5 stars It's not a Jacqueline Carey book..........2007-03-14

I did see the similarities in the description from the back of this book and the Kushiel series books, but when I read the full book, it was hardly anything like the Kushiel books. It was as one person described it: a lukewarm Jacqueline Carey Kushiel book. This book sort of dragged in some places, where in others it was interesting and caught my attention, but i was not riveted to the book as I was with Carey's Kushiel. It might be ok for a slightly younger crowd even though it did have rape scenes... I would say perhaps a 15 yr old could read it and not be thoroughly offended. As for Carey's books? They should be rated mature due to the more explicit sexual content and the political intrigue that sometimes seems so complex that I doubt a younger reader would be intrigued by it.

            5 out of 5 stars A fast-moving fantasy in a harsh world.......2007-03-03

"To Serve And Submit" is the first book I have read by Susan Wright and it's a kind of cross between fantasy and erotica - an amalgamation of the two genres which works fairly well but might be dissatisfying to purist readers of either genre.

Susan Wright's writing style is very good - the story never drags but moves on quickly but with some charming detail about the world in which the events are taking place. Marja is a young woman living in a time/place rather like pre-industrial Scandinavia. Unlike most of her peers she can commune with the "olfs", little sprite-type beings that are cheeky but can also help her. Her job is to collect iron for her father to use but when an unusual looking man, Lexander, sails to their village she sees a whole new world opening out to her - he offers to come back to collect her in a year to help make her a pleasure slave and she agrees.

Marja finds herself among several other trainee slaves in different stages of their education; once ready they are moved on to Lexander's homeland on a journey by ship. Marja is taught by Lexander and his consort Helanas to be a submissive slave - and she seems to take to it remarkably well. I wasn't entirely convinced why she wanted to become such a good slave at the outset and why she went along with everything that happened to her - Lexander's statement "you're a true submissive" seemed a little too easy.

The world in which the story takes place is a harsh world, particularly for women, and Marja is required to sleep with whomever she is commanded to, male or female, although she doesn't seem to find this a problem. She becomes more and more attached to Lexander and works hard to be the ideal slave, submissive and obedient to his every requirement.

But then things start to change - Marja is sent by Lexander to shelter with a woman, Silveta, so that Lexander can be reunited with her as he says he loves her. Marja has been trained up till now to be submissive and to obey orders in a rather naïve way, yet she soon discovers that behaving like this is a danger to her as she travels to find Silveta. Marja has to grow up, and learn her own common sense, very quickly. She takes refuge with a couple for a while but is always yearning to meet up with Lexander again. Unfortunately she's not always particularly good news to those with whom she is staying and she is the unwitting cause of a duel which requires her and Silveta to flee.

Marja herself describes her method of getting through life: "I traded what others valued in order to survive." For Marja her item of value is her skills as a pleasure slave and she uses these skills to keep herself safe, to lull people to sleep so that she can escape and to survive her training as a slave.

For those who like reading fantasy books there is a lot to like in "To Serve And Submit". The world that Susan Wright has created is an interesting one, albeit very harsh, and the descriptions of the surroundings are very well written although a map might have been helpful!. The sexual element, that of dominance/submission, multiple partners, group sex and three occasions of rapes is much stronger than you would expect in a traditional fantasy novel and might put some people off. Things weren't written in too graphic a manner and so this element wasn't as difficult as I had initially feared but I found the underlying sexual threads of this story made me a little uncomfortable and they might be rather too much for many readers. However for those with an open mind who are ready for an interesting story of a young girl's learning about her nature and growing in strength so that she can prevail against some very difficult situations, this is an excellent and well-written read.

If you're a Weight Watcher, this collection of 500 recipes in a handy loose-leaf binder could put you in the fast lane on the road to success. This cookbook is designed for Weight Watchers' 1•2•3 Success program: points are assigned to foods based on fat, fiber, and calories, and your daily point allowance is based on your current weight. So you can eat what you want, as long as you don't go over your allotted points. The better your food choices, the more you can eat before you run out of points.

Recipes are varied and cover the whole gamut: sauces; breads; soups; meat, chicken, fish, and vegetarian entrees; pasta; vegetable, grain, and potato side dishes; and, of course, desserts. The recipes are more healthful but not drastically different from foods you and your family enjoy now. Many are familiar comfort foods, such as Pizza, Oven "Fried" Chicken, Beef Stew, Tuna Noodle Casserole, Chocolate Layer Cake, and Cheesecake. Internationally inspired favorites include Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), Orange-Flavored Fajitas, Moo Shu Chicken, Tandoori Haddock, and Senegalese Peanut Soup. The nutritional breakdown for each recipe is more complete than in most cookbooks, and includes calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrate, fiber, protein, calcium, and Weight Watchers' points. --Joan Price

This book has great recipes and a nice mix of flex and core. I have made more than 10 of the recipes and they were easy to follow with good explanations and mostly easy to find ingredients. I recommend highly even if you own other WW cookbooks!

5 out of 5 stars Best WW cookbook by far.......2007-07-19

This is the best weight watchers cookbook I have ever seen. The recipes are not only delicious, but they use ingredients that most of us have on hand or can easily get. My husband (not on weight watchers) has loved every recipe that I have made so far. These are not "diet" food recipes, just good, healthy eating recipes :o)

            1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-18

I ordered this cookbook when I joined weight watchers through amazon.com. There aren't a lot of vegan or vegetarian recipies, and those listed are tasteless. Worse is the Weight Watchers online program. The website is slow and cumbersome and difficult to figure out. While the online blog can be good at times, it certainly isn't worth the money. It took 4 months to cancel through WW accounting department after the first request. BEWARE!!!

does not give the current information. I have to figure out points myself, Yuck

4 out of 5 stars Great WW Recipes.......2006-04-09

If you're a fan of WW, you should love this book. It was written before any of the POINTS systems, so you have to do some calculations on your own. The nutrition info is provided for each recipe. This book is an especially good value because as another reviewer noted, for each main recipe, you get additional recipes provide a day's worth of meals.

I give this book four stars because I've always had to doctor my WW recipes. They tend to be on the bland side for me, but they are always good starting points. I also enjoy light cookbooks that provide tips for cutting fat and calories and this book does not. It's just recipes.

1 out of 5 stars Not the book for my family.......2005-03-06

Way too many of the recipes in this book have ingredients I have never heard of! Also, the ingredient lists are often very long. I am donating my copy to the public library and will use "The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers" and "Quick Meals for Healthy Kids and Busy Parents" to help me provide sensible meals for my family.

4 out of 5 stars Great book but..........2003-12-18

I just recieved this the other day and have yet to make any recipes from this cookbook. But I have now tried several of the WW cookbooks and they always have great recipes, so there is no doubt that I will find some more healthy ones in this book.

I love how each page has a main recipe on it and then they have built a whole day of eating around that one recipe. Sometimes, there are smaller typed recipes in the daily menu area on each page. For example, on one page, the main recipe is for Grilled Chicken Caesar salad. Then to the right of the recipe, they have built a whole day of meals around this recipe. They have suggested what to eat for breakfast (banana and cereal), a light meal (beans and franks, carrot/celery sticks, whole wheat roll, yogurt), the main meal (which includes the Chicken caesar salad, creamy brocolli soup--provides the recipe, a peach and Italian bread) and an evening snack (3 cups of plain popcorn).

This is perfect for someone who needs to follow a strict menu to stay on track. Not everyone has the self discipline to make their own healthy menus and stay within the WW guidelines, so this would work well for those people. And each recipe/daily menu is different so you don't have to worry about being bored and eating the same things over and over.

The only real complaints I have about this book is that it is outdated compared to the newer WW cookbooks. It doesn't have any of the point values in the book, so you need to use the WW calculator to figure the point values out for each recipe. And the other complaint that I have is the book does have a few pictures in it, but most of the pictures are very unappetizing. They look like they just threw the recipe together and didn't worry about presentation. The more recent WW cookbooks make the pictures look very yummy, unlike this one.

Also, we all know that not everyone can eat the same amount of calories and continue to lose weight, so its unclear as to who this cookbook is geared towards. Someone who needs to be eating 1600 calories and actively losing weight still or someone who is maintaining their goal weight and need to eat around 1200 calories per day.

This cookbook looks like its worth a try, even just for the recipes and not the daily menus. But it't not as nice as the newer cookbooks that WW has put out in the last few years.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't Taste Like Diet Food!!!.......2002-03-11

This cookbook is the best I've ever tried! I had a pretty good selection of cookbooks before buying this one so I didn't really think a 'healthy cookbook' would be able to compare... but the recipes are really great! There's a large selection of tastes for simple to complex meals.

Plus for each day/page the book does not just give you one recipe. You'll be given a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Side dish ideas and drink ideas that will go good with your main dish are suggested! It's deffinatly a unique and helpful cookbook. You'll love it!

4 out of 5 stars GREAT COOKBOOK FOR EVERYONE.......2005-01-30

I bought this book when it was first published and I have lost 50 lbs with it. Unfortunately, my dog found the book tasty and chewed it up, but I am definitely replacing it. I thought the points section helpful but not inclusive enough. Also, Weight Watchers could have included activity points information enjoyed this book as much as I enjoy[...].

3 out of 5 stars Fails on several counts compared to other smoothie books.......2005-08-18

`Ultimate Smoothies' by Donna Pliner Rodnitsky and `The Best 50 Smoothies' by Joanna White are the fourth and fifth smoothies books I am reviewing and it is appropriate to review them together and not review them in the same context as the first three, `The Smoothies Bible' by Pat Crocker, `The Ultimate Smoothies Book' by Cherie Calbom, and `Smoothies for Life' by Daniella Chace and Maureen B. Keane in that these two little books do not profess to be a comprehensive work on smoothies. They just profess to be little books on `the best' recipes.

It is painfully obvious from the outset that the second of these two, `The Best 50 Smoothies' does not live up to its title. The first reason is that there is not a single recipe in the book with a vegetable ingredient. For those, in detail, you want to go to `The Smoothies Bible' or `The Ultimate Smoothies Book', especially the latter if you have a juicer and like to use it. The second reason is that this book contains no smoothies with any alcoholic ingredients. Even the smoothies with names copied from famous alcoholic drinks such as the Mint Julep contains no alcohol. I strongly believe that among the true top 50 smoothies are at least five containing alcohol and at least five with at least one vegetable ingredient such as either tomato or carrot juice. Thus, I dismiss this book from further consideration.

The `Ultimate Smoothies' is a different story altogether. While it contains no vegetable ingredients, I will forgive it, as it makes no claim to being a collection of all the best recipes. It is only claiming to have 125 from among the best recipes for smoothies, freezes, and blasts. And, the book gets extra credit for including a very nice selection of recipes that include alcohol in some form or another. Even `The Smoothies Bible', the best general book on the subject has no `adult' recipes. I anticipate reviewing at least one more book on smoothies, but for the moment, if what you really want is just a collection of good, fun recipes, then `Ultimate Smoothies' is for you!

Even if you are just into smoothies for the fun of it, this book has excellent nutritional information for each recipe, nicely located in a box at the bottom of the page, at the same place on each page so you can easily flip through the recipes with an eye on the calorie count to find ones which fit a particular calorie range or low fat recipes or low carb recipes or low sodium recipes or high beta-carotene recipes or high or low whatever the nutritional fad of the day may be. This feature justifies the otherwise annoying slim Jim book format where pages are more than twice as long as they are wide.

A not inconsiderable virtue of this book is the fun names given to all the recipes, divided up into five chapters concentrating on:

                    Back to Basics: Classic recipes
                    Smoooothies: Recipes heavy on dairy.
Rx Smoothies: Recipes focusing on especially healthy combinations.
Outrageously Decadent: Lots of chocolate and sweets.
Black Tie Only: An adult swim with rum, cordials, and other ethanolic pleasures.

A second feature of this book not found in any of the bigger volumes is a chapter on garnishes. And, this is not a five-page throwaway. There are 29 recipes including the same nutritional analysis as we get for the smoothie recipe. This is a not inconsiderable virtue as some garnishes can easily double the calories of the serving, although many, such as the fruit chips are very low in calories.

If you want only one book on smoothies, especially if you plan to use them with entertaining, this is clearly the best of the crop. It is entertainingly written and the recipes are clearly written, although I would have liked metric measurements to accompany the English units. If your primary interest is in health, get `The Smoothie Bible'. Otherwise, this book is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Smoothies are great for spring and summer.......2004-03-18

With Spring and Summer right around the corner, I was looking for a book with delicious smoothies recipes. Smoothies make a great breakfast in the warm weather. This book is simple, but the recipes are really great, and easy to follow. A really good book for anyone looking to get started making smoothies.

5 out of 5 stars The Simple Pleasures............2003-09-11

This review refers to "The Best 50 Smoothies" by Joanna White....

It's just a little book, nothing fancy, but inside you will find some terrific ideas and a real good variety for some delicious and nutritious smoothies. The recipes are simple and most of the ingrediants are readily available most any time of the year.

It starts of with an introduction, letting you know it's okay to get creative and experiment. Followed by a few pages of some really helpful hints like how to make thicker smoothies, how to frost a glass or mug, storing over ripe bananas, the best way to crush ice, etc. You'll also find some great garnishes and alternative sweetners in this section.

The book is divided into sections of the various types of smoothies. Breakfast Smoothies...here you find find such delights as "Apple-Cinnamon Deluxe" and a "Coffee Banana Smoothie"(who need Starbucks with these treats!)....Berry Smoothies..."Red Raspberry Razzler" and "Super Strawberry Slurpee" are just a couple of the treats for the taste buds here.."Tropical Smoothies includes..a "Pineapple Peach Pick-Me-Up " and a "Papaya Strawberry Tropical" to die for. There are also Citrus Smoothies,Melon Smoothies and Creamy Smoothies.

There's an alphabetical index in the back, to find your favorites(although with the size of this book, it not a big task) and a few blank "Note" Pages, where you can write any ideas that come to you or remember your favorites here.

There's something for everbody here, you can use ice cream or low fat yogurt in some recipes and I like that some of the recipes include soy and protein powders(I have a really bad relationship with dairy products). They taste great, are simple to make and can be used as a meal, snack or dessert!

The book is small enough to go in your purse or even your pocket and it a good thing to add to your cart when you need just that little bit more for the "Free Shipping!" If you love smoothies or want a good introduction to them, you can't go wrong with this little recipe book.

                    Enjoy......Laurie
