The only person who gets called Ballardesque more often than Chuck Palahniuk is, well... J.G. Ballard. So, does Portland, Oregon's "torchbearer for the nihilistic generation" deserve that kind of treatment? Yes and no. There is a resemblance between Fight Club and works such as Crash and Cocaine Nights in that both see the innocuous mundanities of everyday life as nothing more than the severely loosened cap on a seething underworld cauldron of unchecked impulse and social atrocity. Welcome to the present-day U.S. of A. As Ballard's characters get their jollies from staging automobile accidents, Palahniuk's yuppies unwind from a day at the office by organizing bloodsport rings and selling soap to fund anarchist overthrows. Let's just say that neither of these guys are going to be called in to do a Full House script rewrite any time soon.

But while the ingredients are the same, Ballard and Palahniuk bake at completely different temperatures. Unlike his British counterpart, who tends to cast his American protagonists in a chilly light, holding them close enough to dissect but far enough away to eliminate any possibility of kinship, Palahniuk isn't happy unless he's first-person front and center, completely entangled in the whole sordid mess. An intensely psychological novel that never runs the risk of becoming clinical, Fight Club is about both the dangers of loyalty and the dreaded weight of leadership, the desire to band together and the compulsion to head for the hills. In short, it's about the pride and horror of being an American, rendered in lethally swift prose. Fight Club's protagonist might occasionally become foggy about who he truly is (you'll see what I mean), but one thing is for certain: you're not likely to forget the book's author. Never mind Ballardesque. Palahniukian here we come! --Bob Michaels

Book Description

The first rule about fight club is you don't talk about fight club.

Chuck Palahniuk's outrageous and startling debut novel that exploded American literature and spawned a movement. Every weekend, in the basements and parking lots of bars across the country, young men with white-collar jobs and failed lives take off their shoes and shirts and fight each other barehanded just as long as they have to. Then they go back to those jobs with blackened eyes and loosened teeth and the sense that they can handle anything. Fight club is the invention of Tyler Durden, projectionist, waiter, and dark, anarchic genius, and it's only the beginning of his plans for violent revenge on an empty consumer-culture world.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-09-06

The movie, amazing;
the book, a masterpiece;
after reading the book, you see what the movie was trying to do,
granted i think the movie did a good job, but the book was amazing, there's so much more detail, it has more of the love story element that the movie left out, it's has so much more of a grunge feel and it really makes you think;
it ends differently than the movie, and i'm not sure which ending i like better, but i love them both.

if you're a Chuck fan or a Fight Club fan, get this book.
s'all i have to say

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking.......2007-08-16

Fight Club is an amazing book. It's very short and easy to read-- actually, I don't think you "read" Fight Club. I think you.. inhale it. If that makes any sense. Combine Nietzsche with designer drugs (a lot of designer drugs), and you have Fight Club. Reading it is an incredible experience; you feel as if you're part of something bigger than yourself, something revolutionary. After reading it, you just might feel the urge to go out and buy yourself all of the required items, and then try to locate the house on Paper Street so you can join Tyler's army.

Go. Read it, and you too can be a part of the Revolution.

5 out of 5 stars the most quotable book ever.......2007-07-17

there are those who have read it and there are those who aren't worth talking to.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie.......2007-06-27

Let me start by saying that Fight Club is one of my favorite movies, but I had never read the book. Chuck Palahniuk is an amazing writer- especially considering that this is his first novel. While it is very similar to the movie, I still found it very enjoyable despite the fact that obviously you know what is going to happen. I loved this book and just went and bought two more by Palahniuk.

5 out of 5 stars Quick Read........2007-06-26

You just can not put this book down. It's amazing. The movie spoiled it for me a bit but not that much. The only dilemma was in knowing the movie's ending. If you watch that ending and read this one's then you'll be a bit disappointed. Chuck himself even claimed the movie's ending was better.

I love this book though. It's great.

                5 out of 5 stars What a good read!.......2001-03-04

I just purchased all three of the Starship Troupers series -- they were wonderful!!! How disappointing to discover there are no more. Mr. Stasheff, please consider writing more -- you have left us hanging! What about the Man in Gray, Elector Rudders, Prudence, Ramou, Horace and the rest? AAAAAGHH!!!

4 out of 5 stars Please Write Number 4.......2001-02-10

The (so-far) ultimate book in a very entertaining series. Please Please Mr Stasheff write more. As a theatre professional who loves science fiction I beleive you have caught much of the truth behind "The show must go on". Sure your characters are stereotypes but stereotypes only survive because there is some truth in them. Press on.

5 out of 5 stars where is it??.......2000-08-25

I love the series!!!!! But I can't seem to find this book anywhere. Somebody needs to either reprint it or something!!!AAAHHHHHH!!!! Where is this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! But.............2000-03-29

I loved this book! The series is great, providing a wonderful insight into theatrical culture for outsiders like me. I only have one teeny, tiny complaint. There is a constant foreshadowing of events to come, which we still haven't seen yet. Is Mr. Stasheff hinting at another book? If so, WRITE IT, PLEASE! I'm dying of anticipation!

4 out of 5 stars FLASH: Starship Troupers land where theatre is BANNED!!.......1999-04-10

Can a travelling group of interplanetary players make it on a world where theatre is taboo? The answer makes a fun and interesting read! As a study in "what makes an actor tick" and "backstage at the playhouse", this book should be read by anyone who works in 'tech' or has friends in theatre (and has problems in figuring out how they think!). The book may disappoint fans of Clarke, Hogan, and Forward, but they really should give it a chance. The story is fun and human with its share of stereotypes (loudmouth leading lady, sexy soubrette, organized organizer), but there are also some good, genuine, down-to-brass tacks periods of emotion, snappy banter and copious punning. I've reread this book several times, and it's still a fun story! (Mr. Stasheff, if you see this, IT'S TIME FOR THE NEXT ADVENTURE of the Star Company!)

Everyone knows that high IQ is no guarantee of success, happiness, or virtue, but until Emotional Intelligence, we could only guess why. Daniel Goleman's brilliant report from the frontiers of psychology and neuroscience offers startling new insight into our "two minds"—the rational and the emotional—and how they together shape our destiny.

Through vivid examples, Goleman delineates the five crucial skills of emotional intelligence, and shows how they determine our success in relationships, work, and even our physical well-being. What emerges is an entirely new way to talk about being smart.

The best news is that "emotional literacy" is not fixed early in life. Every parent, every teacher, every business leader, and everyone interested in a more civil society, has a stake in this compelling vision of human possibility.

5 out of 5 stars This is his classic work - I recommend it to all my clients........2007-09-16

This is his original classic work. The term "emotional intelligence" has become iconic yet not fully understood. Start discovering the concept with this first in a series of books by Goleman. Emotional intelligence involves the ability to identify and manage our emotions; to recognize our impact on others; to empathize; and to generate and direct emotions in ourselves and others towards a constructive goal. This ability can be measured, and more importantly, it can be improved. I egularly encourage my business and life coaching clients to read it.

5 out of 5 stars I found this book well worth reading.......2007-09-16

This book does a great job of explaining the interactions between the logical part of the brain and the emotional part of the brain. I studied psychology 20 years ago in college. It is amazing how much more has been learned about the human body since that time. This book includes many case studies about what happened when various parts of the brain were removed or damaged due to cancer or some other malady. Reading this book has helped me to keep a better check on my emotions when in stressful situations.

1 out of 5 stars When will this book be over?!?!?.......2007-05-12

I feel like I'm in psychology class all over again. He uses a lot of big words that all pretty much mean the same thing and says them over and over. Most of the things he's saying feel like common sense to me and nothing new. If this book wasn't required reading, I would quit reading it!

4 out of 5 stars Psychology at best.......2007-03-22

I am not one who would volunteerly read a psychology book - so naturally I came across this book in one of my courses. It is a book, though, that I can say I was happy to read. It puts life into perspective with regard to how emotional intelligence - coping, depression, addiction - its all based on our emotional realm. Life does not revolve around the intellect of a person. Even the most intelligent can form addictions. This book was great and offers studies and other proofs for Goldmans point of view.

The Western cultures esteem analytical skills measured by IQ tests: but there is clearly more to success and happiness, even in technological societies, than IQ alone. Goleman has written one of the best books on the nature and importance of other kinds of intelligence besides our perhaps overly beloved IQ. Recommended.

                  Book Description

Everyone knows that high IQ is no guarantee of success, happiness, or virtue, but until the discoveries of modern brain researchers, theorists could only guess why. Daniel Goleman's fascinating report from the frontiers of psychology and neuroscience offers us startling new insight into our "two minds" -- the rational and the emotional -- and how they together shape our destiny. Beginning deep in the brain, Emotional Intelligence shows us the exact mechanism of an "emotional hijack," when passion overcomes reason. Through vivid examples, Goleman then delineates the crucial skills of emotional intelligence, and shows how they determine our success in relationships and work, and even our physical well-being. What emerges is a crucial new way to talk about being smart. The final chapters reveal the possibilities -- and limits -- of "emotional literary," as it is taught by both parents and educators. The book concludes with a compelling vision of what true emotional intelligence means for us both as individuals and as a society. The message of this eye-opening book is one we must take to heart: the true "bell curve" for a democracy must measure emotional intelligence. Daniel Goleman offers a new vision of excellence and a vital new curriculum for life that can change the future for us and our children.

                  4 out of 5 stars Interesting topic.......2007-09-07

In this book the author manages to shine some light on an interesting topic which, unfortunately, is not getting enough attention especially in schools and universities. The best thing about the book is that every claim the author makes is backed up with a scientific experiment or a practical example from the real world. The bottom line is that if you have enough experience and knowledge, you may get the job, but in order to advance, or even keep your job, you should have emotional intelligence. Some of the things in the book are common sense, but the author shows us how much they really affect our performance.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Informative Book.......2007-01-19

This is an inspirational and informative book on emotional intelligence; on our rational and emotional minds and why it is very important to our careers, our relationships and our destiny.

This insightful book examines emotional intelligence in an easy to follow and understand format which makes the book useful to a wide readership. The book pragmatically examines what emotional intelligence is all about and what it can achieve for individuals and organisations. The author methodically explains how the rational and emotional minds can effectively work productively together. As I go up the corporate ladder, it is critical to know how to manage my emotions so that I can relate better with others.

Dr Goleman is both a good writer and an original thinker. This is not just an academic book but also one that looks at the whole aspect of emotional intelligence to see how it "fits in" with all aspects of life. The book examines all the relevant issues and provides sound, sensible advice succinctly.

The book changed the way I look at life and relate with people. As an engineer, I used to believe in the power of logic and reasoning in all my dealings with people, be it at work, in the home and in relationships. I considered emotions as irrelevant or for those that are intellectually challenged. How wrong was I. Now that I am a bit more enlightened, from lessons learnt in this wonderful book, I am a better self. I realise that emotional issues affect the way people work, their motivation, satisfaction and productivity and affect the quality of relationships among spouses or friends. I am now a much happier and more effective manager and therefore recommend this book strongly to anyone who wants to live a happier and successful life.

3 out of 5 stars Might help kids if you're a parent/teacher, but not adults........2007-01-09

First off, the Audiobook version has a TERRIBLE narrator. He sounds like a robot, like a computer program interpreting the text. Most bad narrators I get used to, but this one just got more and more annoying until I picked up the paperback.

The writing style drags and is not very engaging. I have forced myself to get through it because of all the hype, but I found myself wondering what all the fuss was about afterwards.

If you are looking for a life-changing self improvment book, this isn't it. 95% of it's contents are about how terrible depressed and angry people have it and how emotionally intelligent people are so well off in comparison. If you feel you lack EI, then this is depressing in itself. There is nothing on how to actually improve or attain EI if you are an adult. The advice that is offered is targeted to children only, reforming education mainly. I think most people already know that bullys more often grow up to be criminals, or that depressed people are more prone to illness, or that angry people have less satisfying relationships. If you want to read a bunch of obvious statements like these, followed by studies that support them, then buy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Widely applicable, but a lot of physiology.......2006-10-24

If physiology bores you, specifically, explanations about how the different parts of the brain work and send signals to the body, then it may be a difficult to read this book. But if you get through it (or skim over it), you'll get a comprehensive explanation of why people act the way they do -- at home, at work, and in school -- in response to the physiological systems that were designed for an earlier time in the history of humankind. Shows how decisions and plans are not made based solely on logical consequences, but often based on people's past, vague memories, and strong feelings.

Practical applications: understand the indvidual human basis of office politics, the challenges of managing and leading a team. And of course, learn more about to live in a family. Also talks about educational solutions to train children and adults to interact better and more peacefully.

5 out of 5 stars Great personal and professional growth tool.......2006-08-18

As owner of a corporate training consultancy - PICKS Training & Consulting - and 20-year sales manager, I found 'EI' to be extremely beneficial to me in both my personal development and my profession. For anybody who is interested in better understanding their emotions and harnessing them for good instead of trauma, I encourage you to read this book and practice its principles.

3 out of 5 stars Exquisite but Impractical.......2006-09-04

The designs in this book are exquisite, no doubt about it. But to copy even some of the elements, much less an entire cake, you would need TONS of specialty equipment that could easy set you back hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Unique veiners, cutters, mats, push molds, beadmakers, stencils -- the list goes on and on. And no, you can't duplicate the effects without this equipment. That expense, coupled with the minimum 30-40 hours of decorating work I'd estimate for each cake, puts these designs way out of the reach of all the brides in my area, and probably most of them anywhere. A good book for oohing and aahing, but unless you've got oodles of money and time to burn, not actually useful.

5 out of 5 stars Great! But not for beginners~.......2005-03-10

I bought this book when I was only a beginner in cake decorating. I remember how disappointed I was when I received this book --- it was beautiful, but not practical at all to me at the time. All the gum paste and fondant work were just too difficult and new to me (and the whole book IS about gum paste and fondant, no buttercream and royal icing whatsoever).

Now that I have completed my gum paste classes and am doing my fondant course, this book became a great reference book! There are indeed some tools that can't be found in any store where I live, but the ideas and designs are amazing!

If you are looking for a book in fondant and sugar art, this book is highly recommaded. But if you are looking for a beginner's tool book or something more practical, I will say Wilton's tool books are a lot better.

3 out of 5 stars Elegant, but Inaccessible.......2005-03-01

I ordered this book online, without the opportunity to browse through the pages. There is no denying that the designs have intricate, exquisite details, and the finished products are gorgeous. I especially admire the high-heeled shoes and the violin, both with floral and leaf accents.

However, these cakes are much better suited for display windows than for plates. I am a cake decorator looking for design ideas, and I suspect most brides looking for wedding cake inspiration would not choose any of the designs in this book, unless they had an unlimited cake budget and a preference for very modern styles.

I'm no Colette Peters, but I love her books because at least you can take her ideas and adapt them--create one or two tiers instead of six, or skip the pounds of luster dust and use beads or ribbons. These designs would be extraordinarily difficult, expensive, and time-consuming to make. They're all fondant, with draping and other details that don't translate into better-tasting buttercream. When I look at these pictures, I can't help but be impressed by the details and the technical skill, but for all the elegance, the cakes lack personalized charm.

I applaud the contributers and Vincent for this compilation of distinctive, original designs. I just don't think they're the kind of cakes most people want to make or order for themselves.
