Book Description
A high-stakes treasure hunt…A twisted trail of murder…A secret one woman may die to discover…
Number one New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen last electrified readers with
Dead Aim and
No One to Trust. Now she offers a new pulse-pounding thriller that takes suspense writing to an all-new level: deep below the surface, where a ruthless killer strikes without warning, without mercy...and with the deadliest intent.
Melis Nemid is treading in dangerous waters—and she’s about to be dragged under. As a marine researcher, Melis knows all too well the dangers that can lurk under even the calmest surfaces. But not even she can guess how deep the darkness runs. Only one oceanographer ever came close to discovering the deadly mystery that lies beneath the sea—and he seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth. Now Melis is the last one who knows the truth. And someone is determined that the truth will die with her. For what Melis knows about the deep-sea mystery is only part of a nightmarish past torn by violence. She thought she had put that past behind her when she arrived at her Caribbean island home to research dolphin behavior.
But her peace—and her life—is about to be shattered by the arrival of a savage killer. Someone—for reasons unknown even to Melis—is cutting a path of destruction and death that leads directly to her.Only one man can save her—a man who claims to be a fellow oceanographer. He will seek to gain Melis’s trust, getting close to her secret and her life. But what this enigmatic man really wants, Melis may not discover until it’s too late. Because whoever is after her knows her nightmares intimately, and soon she will be forced to relive them all over again. Except for the final nightmare. The one she can’t possibly survive.

Not one of her best.......2007-07-25
Fatal Tide suffers from a simplistic story line, underdeveloped characters, and lack of depth. Unlike some of Johansen's other characters like Duncan, Quinn, and Kamal, the intrigue and likeability factor is missing. If you are looking for a satisfying read, skip this one and go to some of Johansen's other books.
I can't believe how many people liked this book........2007-02-01
I wasn't impressed at all. Iris Johansen writes like William Shatner acts (think emoting all over the place!) The drama and histrionics get old fast, and this book in particular asks you to set aside your common sense way, way too much. The first point of that is being asked to believe that there's an adult woman named Melis Nemid who hasn't changed her name legally. The premise of the book is interesting, but the follow-through.. eh.
Fatal Tide had me mesmerized.......2006-12-25
I really can't believe how Iris Johansen keeps getting better and better this story held my attention from the very first page.
I loved the romance of the two main characters and the secondary characters and villans were all written to perfection.
I have not read one novel by this amazing author that has disappointed me and that is saying alot.
She has almost always been on a best seller list and there is a huge reason for that.
Can't wait to read Iris new book coming out this Tuesday I will run not walk to my nearest book store :)
Along with Kasia, Katie, A Rowley it is fabulously written.......2006-11-16
Following trips thru Split Second by Baldacci/Dark Harbor by Stuart Woods/No One To Trust by Sister Iris herself/All following Irish Cream by Andrew Greeley, I never expected to get caught into the intriguing web of dramatic mystery as compelling and powerfull as Fatal Tide!
Fleeting moments of chase by the scary villian, Archer and the vulnerable Nelis's awesome protection by Jed Kelby and Nicholas keeps one on the edge of perception of Who is Who & Who is Where +++ what comes-up next in every surprising scene. It is more than just a page-turner; but often for me needed some quiet breaks to overcome the deep terror of suspense! It's really quite a worthwhile investment of concentration and dramatic intensity! 6 Stars from Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood
Comic Book Heroine on the Printed Page.......2006-10-08
There is absolutely nobody on the planet, never was, probably never will be, who can write such outrageous tales of abused women who overcome the most insurmountable odds and have her readers willingly surrender their disbelief as if they were children the way Iris Johansen does.
If you thought the super abused, super strong heroine in her last novel was about as far over the top as Johansen could get, well you thought wrong. Yet, even though I knew "No One to Trust's" Elena Kyler was straight out of DC Comic Book fiction, even though I knew no woman could ever survive the abuse she had, could never fight the way she did, I was up all night reading the bloody thing, because there is just something about an Iris Johansen novel.
I was up all night with "Fatal Tide," as unbelievable as it was, too. And I know it was unbelievable, because I've spent a lot of time cruising the Caribbean islands, but still I couldn't put the book down. Melis Nemid, our heroine in Fatal Tide, had a horrific childhood, probably the worst in fiction. She's got dolphin friends that are more human than the humans in the book. She's Wonder Woman tough, but she's human as well.
But wait, there's more, like a sunken, treasure laden island and a bad guy after a super weapon that can destroy-well, you can just imagine what it can do and what it can destroy.
With all that said, you might think I was putting down this book, on the contrary, I loved, every word. As I said, only Iris Johansen can make you believe in a tale like this and leave you wanting more.
My advice, buy this book, curl up and prepare for a wonderful read.
Oh yes, there's a rich guy, good guy in the book as well, every woman's dream.

Whoa, it's a must read. .......2006-02-08
Personally, I loved this book. I just couldn't put it down. When, I first heard about this book and about Melis. I couldn't believe it. I thought I would read about my favorite character Kemal again. But I was mistaken. Still, I loved this book. A lover like Kelby who was afraid to love because of his past. A dreamer like Phil who was obsessed and would do anything to get Marinth. A demented man ,Archer, who reminded Melis of her past and harrassed her trying to make her crazy. Then there were Melis' dolphins who were the only peace and sercurity Melis had ever known. Then everything was almost taken away from her. And all the deaths made it so dramatic. She was so strong. It all made the book so interesting. So many twists and turns like a rollercoaster. But I would like to see Kelby's friend Nicolas Lions in one of the upcoming books or to see Galen more. Or even maybe Sarah and her dog.
One of Iris's Worst.......2004-12-02
Wow. I like most of Iris's novels - very rote though they may be. They usually have some semblance of a thriller plot, and characters that are interesting. Not this novel. She basically vomited up everything she has written in past books. But, no, this is not a "Best Of." It is a worst of. If I heard the main character whine one more time about where she was rescued from, *I* was going to vomit. Melis Nemid (the main heroine) is boring, a whiner, and needs strong love from the hero of the story. Get a life lady - you are not an example for females everywhere. The hero is cookie cutter Iris - ex-SEAL, rich, handsome, and rough. Big surprise. The most interesting character is a secondary character: Nicholas Lyons, the gentleman that helps the hero.
Save yourself the stomach pain - skip this book!
Only a few pages in..........2004-11-07
I'm just starting this book, and chose it because I knew it had recurring characters, something I always like. It's a little maddening, though. Melis Nemid, from what I can remember and have managed to find on the 'Net, was featured in a couple of other books.. Wind Dancer and at least one other.. (Nanci, I think Wind Dancer is the one you're thinking of, where she's rescued from a brothel by Kemal). I'm really hoping the back story becomes a little more clear, though from what I've read here, it doesn't seem likely that it will. It wouldn't be fair of me to form an opinion yet, as I've only just started it, but for anyone else who enjoys recurring characters.. this one will probably drive you nuts.
Yuck.......2004-11-01
Iris is a good writer, this is not a good book. Predictable, overly sexed, and just general bad plot and writing.
Simply Awful.......2004-10-26
This has got to be THE most horrible read I've ever suffered through. Flat characters, those damned dolphins ("gotta check the dolphins", "gotta look in on the dolphins", "how are the dolphins", "I hope the dolphins are alive"), no surprises. Sheesh. The writing style is one where you expect a character to jump off every other page, look you in the eye and say, "OK, you got that?". Really, I devour books and find good qualities in most. This one was torture.

A OK Book.......2001-04-02
This book is funny. It is about Jesse and his grandpa. Growing up in Texas, Jesse is a wannabe cowboy - who looks up to his grandpa - a true cowboy. His grandfather is getting old and forgetful; he falls asleep while cooking beans, and Jesse's mother is threatening to send him to a old age home. Jesse thinks that he is fine at home, and should not be at one with only old people. I really enjoyed the book, it was funny and sad too. --Tim Britton

Three acclaimed, bestselling authors -- three extraordinary fantasists -- unite talent and vision to create a noble dynasty and a remarkable realm of spirit and substance.
The House of the Tiger has skillfully ruled Merina in times of peace. But now the indomitable armies of the Emperor Balthasar stand poised to crush the vulnerable city/state. And in the enemy's midst is the gray mage Apolon -- foul necromancer who serves the Dreadful Dark . . . and whose mission it is to satsfy his Master's terrible hungers with living souls, the Heart of a Goddess, and the blood of a Princess. For Adele, aging Dowager Queen; for ruling Queen Lydana; and for Princess Shelyra, lithe, impetuous, ingenious Designated Daughter, the battle seems hopeless -- for they possess no defense, save for their wiles and weapons of the spirit. But the Tiger is a cunning beast, not to be underestimated. And when corered, she bares her teeth . . . and strikes.

In a more positive light.........2006-08-01
Despite the more recent negative reviews on this book, it is a marvelous story, well worth the read. Please check out the more positive reviews...perhaps, it takes a true fantasy afficionado to appreciate the complexity of this book. Well worth the read. LadyHawke791
There was just something missing..........2002-03-12
I just didn't GET this book...the three ladies who wrote it are, as far as I'm concerned, three of the most important female fantasy writers of all time. Yet I simply couldn't get into this book. The writing styles were just too different, and the story moved too slowly...this is a danger of multiple perspectives: the authors must backtrack to catch "their" character up to the others, and the reader is left slogging through a 400-page mess. I think that if this book had been a little better organized (and the characters a bit more believable) I would have enjoyed it more. As it was, it just left me with this vauge headache and the need to go back, re-read certain passages, and finall, put the book down and not come back to it.
a few good details.......2000-12-30
this book had me bored to tears. i literally threw this book down a few times wondering when things were going to culminate? everything is tediously described three times by three different characters. three generations of a royal family are seen through three women of this royal house; the old queen, the middle aged heir and the young princess. in that it's pretty standard but instead of moving this story, which at its heart is wonderful, every scene is retold through each character's eyes with barely any variance.
this story of a kingdom threatened by an invading emperor who lusts for conquest sounded pretty interesting to me. his son, who the reader finds quickly is really loving and wishes for peace, is in this kingdom to help conqueror it. the three main characters, through who the story is told, are the queen, the heir and the young princess. the queen is aging and must pass on the throne but cannot when they are all forced to flee into hiding by the invaders. this summary is brief but the story is closely connected with the characters and i don't want to hand out to many teasers.
at the begginning of the book i was intrigued by the idea of this mystical kingdom with hidden secrets and mysterious rituals but by the third chapter i was wondering when something was going to happen to already. "tiger burning bright" hints that angels may play a very important role but then abruptly ignores the subject leaving the reader wondering why the lengthy description if they play no real role?
chapter after chapter is devoted to what every character is thinking, feeling, wearing and what they plan to do but never actually do. build up is all well and go and i am a never ending fan of suspense, holding it as critical part of a story but between three authors one would think that all this suspense was leading somewhere.
the long awaited ending was something i wouldn't call overly original, reading instead like some trashy romance novel. i knew who would end up with who by the fifth chapter and kept wondering when it would happen already. though many like the story line and i found i liked certain scenes or detail/ideas in the book overall i found it a dissappointing if not completely tiresome read.
Pretty good, once it got started...........2000-07-05
For the first hundred or so pages, this book was extremely boring. The characters were 2-dimensional (Wise old queen, impetuous young princess, etc.),it was somewhat hard to follow, and it was impossible to tell WHY anyone did what they did. After that, however, the plot picked up rather nicely, and, by the middle of the book I could not put it down. The romances were, in my opinion, predictable, but sweet anyway. I would say read it, it IS pretty good after the beginning, but be prepared to wade through a few hundred pages first.
excellent and then some.......1999-08-24
This is a truely amazing book no matter where your taste lies. It is interesting, descriptive (without becoming boring), and has the ability to compell readers to read this beautifully wrought novel. Though it is told mainly through feminine views, it is not a story which the only reason the hero is not male is because the author likes the novelty of female heroines and thus gives the heroine infinite powers. Instead it is a story which contain both the upsides and downsides of human personality. However, since it is a fantasy novel and not a "real-life" story (in which someone gets cancer and the parents are divorced), something unusual has to happen to seperate it from the afforementioned category. The result is one of the best books I have ever read.

Good Reference Tool.......2007-10-08
Great for avoiding confusion when dining out or grocery shopping. Some foods in this book that are identified as a 'beneficial' for your body have since been changed to 'neutral' (neither good nor bad). The most up to date food categorizations can be found at D'Adamo's website in the 'Typebase' section. Still a must have for those new to the blood type way of eating.
Well planned out.......2007-09-18
This book plans out your diet very easily and makes everything very blunt and easy to follow. I personally didn't stick to the diet because I began having bad stomach cramps, probably from such a drastic change, but if you're willing to try it, go for it. I know someone who saw fabulous results from it. So it's worth looking into.
Confusion!!.......2007-08-31
I just find it very confusing. I've been eating, what I thought, was very healthy for about the past 14 months and the book really contradicts most of what I've been told I was doing right!! Very confusing!
Not Too Profound.......2007-06-27
I did not have a profound experience utilizing this booklet and gave the booklet away after reading it. It's a skinny little booklet with a little information. In hindsight, I do not recommend this booklet. My recommendation is for the Atkin's book, New Diet Revolution, a great resource for eating healthy and is loaded with good practical information.

Great to take on trips or just out to eat. It is also useful for those days your not feeling yourself and you need some remedies.

The African American church-going experience is richly defined through the recipes and stories collected in Brenda Rhodes Miller's The Church Ladies' Divine Desserts: Heavenly Recipes and Sweet Recollections. Throughout the book, Miller introduces us to many church ladies and shares their sweet yet significant contributions to their neighborhood churches and communities.
The phrase "church social" is equivalent to homemade and the recipes are of the sort one would expect to find on the tables at a church social or bake sale, ranging from Pineapple Upside-Down Cake to Sweet Potato Pie. Boxed cake mixes are forbidden with this crowd and Miller even includes a story of one church lady from her childhood who was quite comfortable sending individuals back home if they had brought "store-bought" baked goods to a gathering.
The stories and church-lady bios make for pleasant reading, and the recipes in this book are great to have on hand the next time you're asked to bring dessert to a social gathering. Whether you need a tasty and tart fresh lime pie or a chocolate brownie recipe that requires more effort than just adding water, The Church Ladies' Divine Desserts is a welcome and comforting resource, full of rich flavor as well as history. --Teresa Simanton
Book Description
In the tradition of The Black Family Reunion Cookbook, Celebrating Our Mothers' Kitchens, and A Gracious Plenty, The Church Ladies' Divine Desserts brings together more than two hundred recipes, culled from local, church, and family cookbooks. But this book is much more than a compilation of recipes for decadent (or divine) sweets. It honors church ladies, those revered African-American women who have contributed immeasurably to their churches as teachers, mentors, keepers of tradition, and as culinary experts.
A homemade dessert is more than just a sweet finale to a meal in the African-American kitchen. It is a way to demonstrate special affection while underscoring the bounty of God's blessing on the home. And no one more than a church lady is aware of the power of a fine chocolate confection or a down-home bread pudding prepared with love and served with respect.

The praline recipe in this book is outstanding, as well as the cover recipe, the lemon-coconut pound cake. Both get rave reviews whenever I make them. The stories and pictures are also wonderful, and should bring up wonderful memories for anyone who grew up in the church.
Needs An Interior Redesign.......2006-02-01
Don't get me wrong this is a good collection of recipes not all of which are directly from church ladies.
However, as a baker I prefer to see a presentation- a photo of the finished product. This edition has too many pictures of the cooks and not enough of the cooking. I was not expecting a Church fashion show! Maybe the writer could compromise and in a next edition put the baker with her product?
The interior pages which were of a type of recycled non-luminious paper that was a bit hard on my eyes.

Treasure Trove!.......2005-10-22
I used to eat well at my church in Little Rock, AR. I loved how everyone had a signature dish that generated multiple requests for the recipe. You can now have your own signature dessert with this book!
The book is divided into the following chapters:
Cakes
Pies, Cobblers and Trunoers
Cookies and Candy
Custards and Puddings
Frozen Treats
Specialty Desserts
Beverages
Top It Off (Sauces)
You will get your money's worth with this book. There are a huge number of recipes! In the cake chapter alone there are 50 recipes. Unfortunately there are no pictures of the desserts, but the book is filled with images of the women who made them and their stories. This is a book to be treasured.
This book takes me back to my church socials. It contains the varied and quirky dessert recipes (buttermilk ice cream and Mississippi Mud Cake) that made the teas and dinners special. You should be able to find a number of recipes to use for your next bake sale, tea or dinner with family.
This is a wonderful book........2004-08-04
I came across this book while weeding the large print collection. I took a moment to leaf through it, and I was amazed. This is a gorgeous book, filled with history, photos, and tasty recipes -- and the writing in it is very clever.
This is a special book, more than just a cookbook. I would highly recommend checking it out, but you better not read it hungry!
Good one..........2003-12-30
I liked the pictures and the author's comments. The recipes are plain and simple. This is an interesting and easy to follow cookbook. Good price.
