For all that it involves organized crime, naked women, grumpy bouncers, a serious snowstorm, and a hero with a profound drinking pattern, The Ice Harvest is a quiet little book--noir-ish, certainly, but never to excess. As the novel traces Charlie Arglist's trail around his small Kansas hometown on Christmas Eve, 1979, the lawyer's literal footprints are clear enough, given the whopper of a blizzard that's descended, but his metaphorical path is far less obvious. He's killing time before leaving town, but where is he going? And why?

Scott Phillips' sketch of a crooked lawyer on the lam is amusingly ironic: though there's violence aplenty in the novel--including a morbidly comic finger-breaking scene starring Spencer, a philosophical bouncer at the Sweet Cage, one of the strip clubs Charlie oversees for Bill Gerard--this is Waiting for Godot rather than Goodfellas. Phillips masterfully sets up the reader's expectations for action and adventure, dropping cryptic hints about Charlie's past, present, and future, then gleefully keeps Charlie in a holding pattern, circling from one strip club to another, from bars to massage parlors to his former in-laws' house.

But when the world isn't scripted by Beckett, all waiting games must come to an end. Charlie's gamble--it would be cheating to tell you more than that it involves a little cocaine, a beautiful woman of indeterminate origin, a Christmas package full of cash, and an embarrassing photograph--pays off, and he heads out of town. How far does he get? Well, that's another story--and another opportunity for Phillips to show off the mordant humor that may brand him as the Cohen brothers' literary heir apparent. In his hands, Kansas doesn't seem far at all from Fargo. --Kelly Flynn

Book Description

“BITTERLY FUNNY . . . [A] SLEEK FIRST NOVEL . . . NOIR CRIME . . . HAS FOUND A STERLING NEW CHAMPION IN PHILLIPS.”
–The New York Times Book Review

“A FUTURE HARD-BOILED CLASSIC–TIGHT, COLD, AND CACKLING WITH IRONY. On Christmas Eve [in Wichita], a mob lawyer is skipping town with the cash. But in this boozy, neo-noir world–James M. Cain meets George V. Higgins–the best-laid plans of bagmen turn brutal.”
–The Dallas Morning News

“OMINOUS, ACTION-PACKED. . . This is a confident, wry debut . . . [that] may remind readers of Fargo or Pulp Fiction.”
–Detroit Free Press

“I SIMPLY CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT SCOTT PHILLIPS WILL DO NEXT. [This] funny, tough first novel felt like it was written by an old pro, an Elmore Leonard we’ve never heard about who’s discovered a place where the criminals are really dumb, the low-lifes are oh-so-fun to watch and, if somebody just happens to get what he deserves, there’s no one to blame.”
–RICHARD RUSSO
Author of Straight Man

“A DARKLY COMIC, SOMETIMES BRUTAL PIECE OF NOIR FICTION.”

5 out of 5 stars This book is a blast of fresh air........2006-04-15

The Ice Harvest might not be for everyone. I say that because it is as unsentimental and violent as can be. Not that many people die here in comparison to even your average James Bond flick, its just you get to know everyone here a little bit and some of the acts are brutal in their cold boldness.

For myself, this was part of the appeal. I kept thinking that Scott Phillips had a remarkably similar narrative voice to that of Richard Russo. Russo is one of the great masters of character development you will come across, so by equating the two, even with a tenuous thread, is a high complement in my book. What you will get is a story chalk full of individuals that immediately come to life and take on personalities that separate them from one another in an adept manner.

If every mystery/thriller was as good as `The Ice Harvest,' you wouldn't need reviews like this because you would know that you were in store for a first rate read. I would say that if you wanted a hard boiled knock down read, this is your book.

2 out of 5 stars Greatly Written yet a horrible plot.......2006-03-01

This book was written with a great writing style that had the attribute of being very descriptve, yet the plot was gruesome, horrible, and completely disgusting to think about. I wouldnt buy it if I had the choice again.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Noir Deal.......2006-02-03

Charlie Arglist is a crooked attorney who, with his associate Vic, has ripped off a large sum of money from his employer, the mob boss of Wichita. It's Christmas Eve, 1979, and Charlie is making the rounds of strip bars, killing time until he can make his escape in the morning. As the long night wears on Charlie gradually realizes that his scheme has gone horribly, horribly wrong. The bodies begin to pile up and Charlie becomes more and more desperate until it all leads to a mordantly ironic conclusion. "The Ice Harvest" is a short, sharp shocker. It's set in the worst year of the worst decade in recent American history, and is wonderfully satirical in its tour of the sleazy stripper-and-porn underbelly of midwestern America.

Like many others I first became aware of this novel because of the John Cusack-Billy Bob Thornton movie version. Screenwriters Robert Benton and Richard Russo came up with some memorably witty dialogue and fleshed out some of the characters like Thornton's Vic, Oliver Platt as Charlie's drunken buddy, and Randy Quaid's scary gangster. But uncertain and meandering direction caused the tension to slacken. Worse, rather than the book's swift decent into hell, the filmmakers imply that Charlie's ordeal has finally made a man out of him, which is a serious misreading of the novel. And they tacked on a ridiculous "happy" ending instead of Phillips' bitter surprise coda.

So stick with the novel. The blurbs on the hardcover edition compare it to James Crumley, Jim Thompson, and James M. Cain. High praise indeed, but "The Ice Harvest" certainly earns it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-12-19

I couldn't tear myself away from this book. It was hilarious, realistic, and concise. In other words, they don't make 'em like this anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Darkly funny........2005-12-02

Nothing says Christmas like strippers, cocaine and free flowing alcohol. Well, it does if your name is Charlie Arglist and you're a crooked lawyer about to blow town for good.

The dark, shocking, frequently violent, but solidly funny narrative of The Ice Harvest begins at 4:15 pm December 24th and
ends at mid-morning the following day. All of the action, and there's quite a bit of action, takes place in or near Wichita. Kansas. Charlie has embezzled a staggeringly large sum of money from his gangster boss and is just hours away from disappearing to parts unknown with the cash.

While a major league snowstorm rages, Charlie spends his last night in town driving around visiting and sometimes revisiting a number of his old haunts. These include a few assorted bars, his ex in-laws home, an old girlfriend's duplex, a couple of strip clubs, a massage parlor and a porn shop. In keeping with the spirit of the season, he manages to stay more or less drunk the entire time, even snorting some coke for good measure.

As Charlie makes his rounds, bad things start happening. His ex sister-in-law's husband vomits in the car, the abusive boyfriend of one of the strippers gets his fingers broken one by one, and oh yes, several people are murdered.

The Ice Harvest is a no holds barred study of a man largely bereft of redeeming qualities and the rather sordid world he inhabits. Written with originality and a healthy dose of riotously funny dark humor, this book merits a 5 star rating.

I was inspired to read The Ice Harvest after seeing the newly released film of the same name. The movie is faithful to the decidedly noirish tone of the book, but the two differ in a number of places including the ending. In my opinion, if you like the movie, you will love the book.

A seminal food writer, Elizabeth David brought Mediterranean cuisine to English readers and became a national institution, her cookbooks beloved not only for their recipes but for their literary depth. In the 1970s David began researching ice-cream. It was an innocent enough idea, but she got side-tracked--the result was 20 years of research into the whole history of ice and ice-making, and this book, which she died before completing (it has been finished by Jill Norman). As revealed in extracts from the earliest writings on the subject, ice, before the days of refrigeration, was an item prized by the mightiest and warmest empires. Though not a cookbook, this encyclopedic treatise on ice won a 1995 Julia Child Cookbook Award for Literary Food Writing, and a Jane Grigson Award.

That there will be rising sea levels and temperature changes ranging from an ice age to desertification of large parts of the planet. With our present societal system based on coercion we have Global Dumbing. The result will be uncontrollable disorder and chaos, preventing us from solving the problems of Global Warming. We can not survive as a viable specie with our present societal system based on coercion. This book describes the problems and how to solve them. To prevent our extinction.

Rubino takes the approach of a fable to instruct and guide us in seven key principles which can make one's life full of happiness and prosperity. This book contains much of the same message as in any good personal development book. Yet it's presented in a format which is refreshing. An easy read, I found it to be enjoyable. I thought of children reading this as I read. I think it's a great potential read for the 10 - 18 year old, as well as for adults.

5 out of 5 stars My intention in writing The Magic Lantern.......2001-05-24

As a personal success and effectiveness coach, my commitment is to empower people to possess the fundamental success principles that will support them to be most effective in their communications and relationships while being most productive and abundant in their business and lives. I wrote The Magic Lantern to give people an easy to understand access to being happy and successful while realizing their magnificence. The principles highlighted in the book are the same ones we support people to fully understand and manifest in their lives through our 3-day Conversations for Success Courses, which have been described by many as life-changing and responsible for countless business breakthroughs.

Though an interesting fable about dwarves, elves, goblins, trolls, dragons and wizards, the book shows people how they can be the best they can be and take on a leadership role in their own life, work and with their family and friends. The book's message is simple. If we live our lives from a decision to create empowering interpretations about all of life's events, strive for excellence and contribute to others with a firm belief that we can impact people and the world around us, we will step into leadership and make a difference. The book also provides the secrets to achieving business success, impacting people effectively with our communication, increasing our charisma and leading ourselves and others to achieve a life of harmony and happiness. The Magic Lantern shows how putting yourself in the other person’s world while attaching meaning to words and events so that they empower you and your relationships instead of making you angry, sad or afraid can cause your relationships and business success to skyrocket.

The Magic Lantern is a book about the art of leadership. Leadership stems from a decision to lead and contribute first of all. It is an act of courage. No prior evidence is required to give one the right to lead. Leaders are always self-appointed. Leadership means acting from your values and honoring your commitments at every moment that requires a decision. It is about standing at a fork in the road and choosing between actions that honor your excellence and your decision to contribute to others, to risk and do the right thing as opposed to doing what is convenient at the time, acting in a self-serving way, taking the easy way out, playing it safe or selling yourself and others out because of weakness.

When readers decide to take on the lessons and success principles outlined in The Magic Lantern, their lives and businesses will transform. Life will work as they will possess the skills necessary to bring about the rich relationships and material abundance that naturally comes about as a result of living in harmony with these proven principles.

                  3 out of 5 stars Groundbreaker!.......2001-04-23

Dr. Rubino breaks new ground by combining a fictional adventure story with aspects of leadership and other desirable human traits. The qualities of leaders are explicitly stated, so it's a very clear message. What I enjoyed even more than the leadership rules were the poetic declarations, which make the dialogue, come alive. As with any new groundbreaker, it is very difficult combining two categories of books, so my children and I found it difficult to get into the story. Nevertheless, this is the kind of book I would prefer my children to read, as there are some valuable lessons in it.

5 out of 5 stars A fable that examines true leadership.......2001-02-11

Joe Rubino's The Magic Lantern: A Fable About Leadership, Personal Excellence And Empowerment is a fable that examines just what it means to take on true leadership and become maximally effective with everyone you meet. Rubino draws upon his years of experience and expertise as a Personal Development Trainer to provide the reader with accessible and effective lessons regarding the power of forgiveness, the meaning of responsibility and commitment, what leadership is really all about, the transforming power of belief and positive expectations, the value of listening as an art, the secret to mastering emotions and actions, and a great deal more. The Magic Lantern is enthusiastically recommended reading for anyone seeking self-help, self-improvement insights and understandings for themselves and for their relationships with others.

                  Book Description

For children with sensory integration issues-those who have difficulty processing everyday sensations and exhibit unusual behaviors such as avoiding or seeking out touch, movement, sounds, and sights-this groundbreaking book is an invaluable resource. Long thought to affect only autistic children, or mistaken for ADHD, SI dysfunction is finally being recognized as a separate condition. Coauthored by a pediatric occupational therapist and a parent of a child with SI dysfunction, Raising a Sensory Smart Child is as warm and accessible as it is authoritative and detailed and is an indispensable guide for parents, therapists, and teachers who will turn to it again and again.

I like the detailed listing of all the different kinds of conditions, which puts things in perspective. It has also helped me weed through so much of the hype found on various quack web sites. I shared the book with my mother-in-law and she has found it useful too. This book is informative.

Don't listen to the reviewer who only gave this book one star. It is full of knowledgable insight and tons of helpful information. This book is a good one for parents who are just learning about SPD. Sensory Processing Disorders are real and he needs to educate himself about them. I am the parent of a child who overcame her sensory integration dysfunction. Early intervention is key. There are many therapies available to help. Finding therapists who are knowledable of it is very important. This book leads you in the right direction. If I would have listened to naysayers like this, my daughter would not be the happy, healthy, and outgoing young lady she is today! Most books tell you what's wrong with your child. Well, most parents can write their own book in regards to that. This gives you tons of ideas of how to introduce tons of therapy to your child that's practical and fun. It's the best book for SI problems and solutions.

3 out of 5 stars Farm House Ales Review.......2007-10-01

The book is very formal about the subject.
I would like to see added to the book, comparisons of this beers with others (similar in taste but not in the same style).

The book did not surprised me, but it has some local brewers information, which is valuable.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for the homebrewer.......2007-01-09

As a homebrewer, it's hard to read this book and not immediately want to brew. What's great about this title (and all of the others in this series) is that it can inspire anyone who's brewed before. For the less-adventurous among us, there's plenty of information here to credibly recreate a "typical" saison or biere-de-garde even if you've never tasted one before. For the more seasoned brewer, however, the frank discussions of the intricate history of these beers and the vageries of style inspire you to create your own unique farmhouse ale.

4 out of 5 stars Good history and information on Farmhouse ales.......2006-11-10

Some of the reading seemed dry but lots of good historical information about the brewing of farmhouse ales in Belgium and France. I would highly recommend if you have any interest in these uncommon, yet unique beer styles.

                      4 out of 5 stars worth reading.......2005-07-28

This book contains a wealth of practical information for the experienced homebrewer, without being dry or stuffy. Thankfully, there are no pages wasted on "brewing for beginners" or "equipment you'll need to get started"; it is assumed the reader already has a basic knowledge of all-grain brewing procedures, and beer appreciation in general.

Discussion of historical and geographic influences on saison and biere de garde are interesting and kept to a minumum. Of particular interest is the text devoted to paragons of both styles- describing their evolutions, specific malts and hops used, abv and attenuation, yeasts, gravities, fermentation temperatures, aging, water profiles, and so on... everything one would need to reverse-engineer a clone beer, if one chose to do so.

It is not, however, a collection of clone recipes. The samples recipes for variations of both styles are intended as guidelines, easily adaptable to individual brewhouse procedures and efficiencies. Also, the parameters are so diverse that it is difficult, if not impossible, to define style guidelines, a fact that the author acknowledges. This loose end can be frustrating to the reader.

Overall, a useful book; solid information, and nothing irrelevant or overtechnical.

                      5 out of 5 stars Farmhouse Ales.......2005-04-24

Farmhouse Ales focuses on the Biere de Garde of northern France and the Saison ales of Belgium. Neither of these styles is a single type of beer, but rather a category of ales made locally with various brewing methods and array of ingredients, including spices. The brewing methods in these areas continue to evolve and do not necessarily relate to the styles of the past. Although the styles have an amorphous nature, this book provided me with a clear understanding of Biere de Garde and Saison.

Experienced brewers will discover plenty of information in this book, especially ideas that go against the common convictions about brewing. What about fermenting at high temperatures? Mixing yeasts? Red wine type yeasts? Warm storage? Markowski takes the view that brewing is a process of experimentation, rather than following set recipes. Obviously this book is not for a beginning home brewer.

Markowski argues that though the classification of beer styles is useful, the classifications should not be used to inhibit the brewer from coming up with something much different. I agree with this. What is the use of always imitating commercial beers? Our fascination with brewing is to discover a new taste through experimentation.

This book covers the past and present styles of Biere de Garde and Saison (including an informative essay by Yvan De Baets on how Saison evolved), and provides a list of the breweries producing the styles, detailing grains, hops, temperatures and other brewing details, along with tasting notes on the beers they produce.

In sections on brewing the styles, the sample recipes are just guidelines (in the spirit of experimentation) rather than set formulas. You must decide what overall weight of grains you will use and then calculate percentages of the grain types. You also must calculate the amount of hops you will use to achieve the target IBU. The brewing notes about the styles are highly instructive, providing the parameters of grains that can be added, even the ranges of various spices for Saison. Such details must come from a lot of labor in the brewery.
