Simplifying Spiritual Breakthroughs.......2006-01-16
Wilkinson used a simple but effective teaching aid - 3 chairs which are used to represent 3 portraits or spiritual states in which everyone in the world can be divided into as illustrated in the diagram below:
CHAIR ONE - commitment, saved, spiritual
CHAIR TWO - compromise, saved, carnal
CHAIR THREE - conflict, unsaved, natural
His thesis that by identifying which chair we are sitting on at present, we can make a `spiritual breakthoughs' by making a decision to move from one chair to another.
Firstly, in an effort to make the concept relevant, Wilkinson have oversimplified the process of spiritual growth without reference to grace, spiritual formation, character development and development of new worldview. He seems to give the impression that spiritual breakthroughs is easy and achievable by human effort alone.
Secondly, there is weak theological support for his thesis except using Paul's terms (spiritual, carnal and natural man). In his Biblical example, he used Joshua, elders and children of elders. While he made his point of generational slide, the children of elders were disobedient rather than non believers. But it is true that there is a generational slide if each generation do not develop personal faith in Jesus.
Thirdly, Wilkinson meant the three chairs for Christians, backslidden Christians and non-Christian but there is no reference to the work of Jesus Christ on the cross and of the Holy Spirit in spiritual transformation. Wilkinson seems to imply that spiritual growth can take place by decision making alone. There cannot be movements between the chairs without adequate appropriation of the theology of the cross and inner transformation without the work of the Holy Spirit especially in his examples of Julia, Ernie and Kate.
Finally, while marriage and parenting is important, one wonders whether the three-chairs model is the right approach. Section 3 & 4 sounds like promotions for Walk-Thru-the Bible Ministries programs. Wilkinson's book promises spiritual breakthroughs but one wonders whether it can delivers except for a short time haze of spiritual high.
perfect book.......2002-08-12
this is ideally for couples, but the lessons are awesome for singles, too, and Wilkinson scores right on target this time.
A foundational book.......2002-03-22
I read this book about a year ago, and like my Bible, I find myself going back to it. If you have ever had any questions about where you are in Christ or spiritual maturity, this is a book for not only you and your household. A great gift for every occasion! The Lord's Blessings.
Rigid.......2001-08-22
Perhaps it is the fact that I am young, and that is why this book didn't cause any spiritual breakthroughs for me. Much of the book is geard toward those who are married or divorced and have children. I had high expectations when I picked it up because his other books I have read are wonderful, but I just didn't get much out of this one. The three chairs concept of spiritual maturity in an individual seems undermining to me as well. God is big and does big things and maybe, just maybe you don't sit in one of those three chairs. Wilkinson creates a character for each chair, and considering most of them were married/divorced/parents I really didn't identify with any of them, but I am sure if you are any of these the principles are wonderful. I wouldn't recommend it for young singles.
Spiritual Challenge and Inspiration.......2001-05-27
I have enjoyed reading this book, even though, at times, the challenge to live a more godly life is convicting. I believe the author exhibits "tough love" in calling forth God's best in the reader. I have found this, along with Bruce Wilkinson's other books, to be helpful in my Christian walk.

Rex Stout/Nero Wolfe.......2007-07-08
Rex Stout didn't write a bad Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin (let's not forget Archie Goodwin!)novel. Some are just more excellent than others.
Deeper Into the 1950s.......2006-10-11
Three short stories in this collection.
"Immune to Murder" was scripted into the A&E series, and the adaptation was visually wondserful. U.S. diplomats are trying to wheedle the ambassador of a "third world" country to secure oil resources. To that end, the American diplomat talks Wolfe into traveling to a hunting lodge to cook this man a meal of fresh brook trout for his country.
The collection's common thread is that all three of these cases have Wolfe outside his home, breaking an inviolable rule.
"Too Many Detectives" has Wolfe, as a licensed private detective, testifying in Albany about licensing practices.
"A Window for Death" Never leave a window open if you're touchy about pneumonia, I guess.
These last two were good enough stories, but it can be deduced why A&E did not option them for broadcast. Despite being located away from the brownstone, they do not have a lot of visual appeal. And, interestingly enough, given limitations of time and space, Timothy Hutton was described as a very visual executive producer and director...
Boy, I sure wish they'd made more of those A&E episodes...
Not the best, but Wolfe is always a good read.......2005-09-15
Three "fish out of water" Nero Wolfe tales, each having to do with an occasion that brings Wolfe out of his comfortable brownstone and out to the scene of the (eventual) crime. The individual stories are fine ones, but the combination robs the oddity of ... well, its oddity.
Still, a decent Wolfe book is always worth it. Good stuff.
As usual, brilliant.......2005-09-07
I just finished this book, but could have recommended it before opening it. As a long-time reader of Stout, I can tell you that his plotting is impeccable, his denouements unfailingly surprising and his command of the language masterful. The first story, "A Window for Death," has long been one of my favorites, featuring as it does Stout's usual suspects--class, money and sexual tension--in the story of a black sheep returning to the fold and mysteriously dying. The other two tales are tasty, too; in "Immune to Death," Stout's lazy and unwilling detective, Nero Wolfe, gets involved in an international fight over oil rights, and in "Too Many Detectives," he is caught in an investigation regarding illegal wire tapping. I will read a Stout--any Stout, even the occasional romance novel--again and again, whenever I get my hands on one, and I always pass them around to anyone who loves a mystery. They're fast, hilarious, arrogant, profoundly unrealistic and fun, with the air of an old comic thriller movie, like Hitchcock's "The Lady Vanishes" or one starring Edna Mae Oliver. Don't be put off by the undercurrent of misogyny, I'm a flaming, old-school feminist and if I can laugh at such sheer ridiculousness, so can you.
Wolfe gets out of the house a little.......2002-05-06
The cases herein occurred in late summer and autumn of 1955, and early 1956.
"A Window for Death" - a.k.a. "Nero Wolfe and the Vanishing Clue". No relation to "Door to Death". Two members of the Fyfe family, father and son Bertram, 20 years apart, died of pneumonia - but it seems to have been murder in both cases, since a window was deliberately left open each time to sabotage the patient's recovery. But Bertram Fyfe died with a half-share in a big uranium strike - which now reverts to his young partner Johnny Arrow rather than his family. Arrow, his executor as well as his friend, says that Fyfe had returned to New York because something was eating him from his past, andnot just a desire to reconcile with the relatives who nearly pinned his father's murder on him. The family wants Fyfe's death investigated, some with an eye on the lion's share that went to Arrow, but Arrow has an ironclad alibi. The 'vanishing clue' mentioned in the alternate title is the key to discovering what really happened, if the reader can deduce its existence. Wolfe handles the final confrontation by dictating a letter to Cramer in front of the suspects - Cramer himself doesn't appear.
"Immune to Murder" - Adapted for A&E's 2nd Nero Wolfe season. Ambassador Kelefy, whose country is being courted for favors by the U.S., has eaten Wolfe's recipes at restaurants all over the world, and Asst. Secretary of State David Leeson has persuaded Wolfe (against Archie's counter-efforts, who has to put up with Wolfe grousing about imaginary lumbago after the long drive) to visit O.V. Bragan's fishing lodge in River Bend and cook brook trout for his country. When Archie joins in the trout-fishing efforts, he hooks not only a granddaddy fish, but the body of David Leeson. The situation is interesting, but the local law enforcement types are portrayed as somewhat fumbling - although that could be attributed to the sheriff & the DA trying to run things directly instead of leaving it to the real experts. Good story, nice change from Wolfe's usual habitat.
"Too Many Detectives" - Thanks to a big wiretapping scandal, the state of New York has noticed the licensing process, such as it is, for private detectives, and all 590 licensed by the state of New York have been summoned to testify. Wolfe, Archie, Dol Bonner, and Sally Colt are among those on the day's lineup in Albany when a former client of Wolfe's - who provided a false name to dupe Wolfe into an illegal wiretap - is found murdered at the hearings. Several of the other detectives have had (or claim to have had) similar experiences. Wolfe and Archie, under arrest as material witnesses, don't trust the Albany cops to uncover the truth, and all the P.I.s want to keep their licenses, so a massive cooperative private investigation is undertaken.

Book Description
The seat is an object of great cultural and artistic importance in Africa. This beautifully illustrated volume offers a fascinating look at the dazzling variety of chairs, stools, backrests, and thrones that have been used throughout in sub-Saharan Africa for centuries.
Made from wood, stone, iron, and fibers; elaborately carved, beaded or bejeweled, as well as rough-hewn, basic and crude, these artifacts tell us as much about the social customs of the civilizations that created them as they do about their people's incredible artistry. In gorgeous, full-color plates as well as numerous black and white photographs, nearly two hundred examples of African seats are portrayed in geographical context. Essays by leading ethnologists and specialists in the field of African art offer revealing insights into the symbolic importance of the seat. Whether for cooking, weaving, giving birth, reclining or ruling; whether offered in friendship or war; whether worn smooth by constant use or preserved by non-use, each of these seats possesses an unmistakable beauty and exceptional sculptural power.

3.5 stars of balanced book.......2006-04-20
Emerald House Rising is a single volume fantasy which takes on a very reasonable approach to both politics and magic. The story is told by Jena Gemcutter, the daughter of Collas Gemcutter (people in this world take their profession as their last name.) All Jena has ever wanted is to become a journeyman Gemcutter in the gem cutting guild and marry her beloved Bram Tailor and make her father happy. She's kind of milksop in fact, she seems to have no wants or needs of her own.
But one day a nobleman shows up with a pretty boring stone he wants cut into a ring. Jena is mesmerized by the ring on his own hand, which her father cannot see and quickly realizes her life was not meant to be as small as it is becoming. So, somehow magically, she transports herself and Lord Morgan (the guy with the ring) to his home. Then he gets snatched away.
While magically looking for Morgan, Jena learns that she a wizard, a magician with a partner to who she is bound (though not romantically.) But someone has stolen Morgan away. And this someone must be looking to change who is the next diamond, or supreme leader.
The leadership in Jena's world rotates- the head of each great house has a turn as the heir to the diamond throne for one year at a time. Morgan's beloved Lady Ruby is next up to be Diamond and the Diamond is dying fast.
Magic in this book is all about seeing possibilities and manipulating them. This is a fabulous way to describe it-but it was over described in the book. It would have been nice to have gotten to figure some things out for myself.
Still, an entertaining and balanced read. 3.5 stars.
interesting framing.......2005-06-06
I have to admit - I've had this book for a while, but didn't actually read it until now. The world that Kerr created isn't all that different from many other fantasy worlds - but the framing device - that of gems naming the ruling houses - was very interesting. As someone who creates beaded jewelry using semi-precious stones, I was intruiged by the characterists she ascribed to each one, as well as the stones chosen.
Jena is immensely likeable, as is her mentor, Lady Kestrienne. Kestrienne doesn't appear as much as I'd like - she is my favorite character.
Like another reviewer, I would like to see a sequel - will the houses come to accept magic, or will those blessed with its power have to continue practicing in secret? Will Jena and her tailor live happily ever after?
Something different.........2004-03-16
I picked up this book at a college book store about 5 years ago. What amazed me was the unique way Ms. Kerr looks at magic, and to be honest, government. A government whose noble houses are named for precious gemstones, completely against magic, yet gemstones link magic together. The "whodunit" element is there, as Jena, the protagonist, has to overcome a very patriarchal, magic-condemning society to rescue her partner.
I was caught up in the vivid descriptions of the characters, and the settings positively shine. You can almost see the small room Jena lives in for a time, or the vivid colors of the Diadem (ruling body).. truly a must have book.
One of my enduring favourites.......2004-03-13
This is gotta be one of my all-time favourite fantasy novels. Jena Gemcutter, the protagonist, is spunky and all-too-human. The plot is fast-paced and is very well done. Descriptive without being wordy. I reread this book at least once a year.
A unique fantasy government and an engaging heroine.......2003-08-07
Jena Gemcutter thinks she knows what she wants out of life--to marry Bram Tailor, to become a master gemcutter, to make her father happy. Then she meets a stranger with a ring only she can see, and strange things start happening. She learns she can do magic. She has strange visions and dizzy spells. She discovers she feels trapped in her life. And suddenly only someone who can use magic--someone like Jena--can save the entire Diadem from treachery.
Kerr's detailed world provides a strong backbone for this exciting fantasy. The kingdom is ruled by the Diamond, whose council (the Diadem) is made up of six other noble houses. Every year, the Diadem house which holds Heirship for the Diamond rotates. This year it is Ruby, but next year it will be Topaz. I've never seen a government system like this in all the fantasy novels I've read, and I found it to be a refreshingly different system.
Jena and Kestrienne are easily the most engaging characters in this book. Jena is the viewpoint character, and it's exciting to watch her discover who she really is and what she really wants. Kestrienne becomes Jena's mentor, as a noble lady who is also an adept. Lord Morgon is an interesting character, though he really doesn't get the development he deserves. Lady Vianne is another exceptional character, a woman of poise, character, and personality.
Kerr gives lavish attention to descriptions, but at times the narrative skips days or weeks at a time -- this gave me slight pause, but all-in-all, I found the book to be entirely satisfactory. I only wish there were a sequel!

This one's different.......2007-09-05
This is not your regular diet book, full of lots of great information and very easy to understand
What a smart man!.......2007-09-04
I see the other reviews and I say the same thing. If you get the kit, and listen to the tapes. You will lose weight. I was 365 and lost 60lbs in less then 3 months. I have a lot more to lose. But if your so heavy you can't do work outs. Even when you try to walk - You leg starts to swell. And your doctor agrees- you need to lose some weight before you can do anything. Because you could have a heart attack. This is the diet. You eat real food. But you must eat. A heavy person is not heavy because of eating to much. Its the right foods and to eat. Don't skip meals. As for the blue print. When you see your doctor. He can tell you were your problem spots are growing. So you can get the right diet. Michael has done so much for my life. I don't have to cry every night because my legs or my sugar is threw the ceiling. I am feeling like a person now. If you need to lose weight now. Read it, do it. Do it for your self.
yes it does work.......2007-08-29
the book is a good place to start, but get the whole kit, no not every one lose 30lb in 6week (up to 30) but the more you have to lose that more you will lose. I reg person who got this kit and have been on this program for 12 weeks not and I have loss so far 56lb, but you have to be truly willing to change your bad habits. If you eat the way you should you not hungry cause you fill up on vegs, and with drinking all the water you stay full. The real secret to the plan is the mind set
Confused ?.......2007-08-24
I originally purchased this book as my daughter wanted to buy the 6 week makeover package for $300.00. I thought that if the 6 day makeover worked, then we would continue with the 6 week package. On purchasing the book, we had to decided our body types - totally confusing !!!! Neither my daughter nor myself could decide what body types we were - the one I chose was to eat meat 4 times a day - I am almost a vegetarian !!!
I am glad that I purchased the book, but found that the body typing was not consistent- too many choices, that lead to different diets.
It really works!.......2007-08-23
I read some bad reviews on here about it not being enuf food. Apparently, these people did not do it or else they'd be singing the praises like the rest of those who actually did it!
I am very overweight. When I started the 6 Day...I weighed in at 265lbs. 6 days later I weighed in at 256lbs.
My top weight was 283lbs almost 3 months ago. I worked out...walked the park and treadmill like a mad woman to lose only 4lbs in the first month. The second month I tried Alli...which allowed an additional 13lbs but pills are not something I can live with forever. Then I tried this. Amazingly, I was very satisfied for 97% of the 6 days. A few times I woke in the middle of the night with some growling...really, and I just had a little fruit or portion of meat and at the end...I still lost 9 whole pounds.
Of course, any diet can work but this one teaches you to eat to live not to live to eat. Salt is bad for us especially people like me (African American). Toooo many of us die every year of High Blood Pressure because of toooo much sodium.
If you give it a try with an open mind and let your taste adjust...like a baby, you will really learn to enjoy vegetables in their natural state and herbs and spices instead of just salt.
Don't get me wrong...salt to me is delicious but my health and life taste so much better mentally!
You'll learn a lot of stuff about how to breath properly, how to exercise properly and tons of other stuff. Maybe you're a fitness, nutrition wiz but for me it was very educational and has changed my life!
Thanks Michael Thurmond!
Oh, and apparently the man knows what he's talking about if he was the expert on a top, Hollywood show!

What's a weekend baker? "Anyone who loves to bake, but gets tripped up feeling that it's too time consuming," writes Abigail Johnson Dodge in The Weekend Baker, her collection of 100-plus recipes for a wide range of sweet and savory baked goods. Formulas for the likes of Gingered Shortcakes with Jumbled Fruit, Soft Chocolate-Almond Oatmeal Cookies, and Chocolate-Banana Swirl Cake are immediately attractive, but the great value of Dodge's book lies in its organization, which takes readers from the simplest and quickest projects--"Baker's Express"--through "Baking in Stages," and finally "Productions," fuller-dress items like Four-Layer Carrot Cake and Overnight Brioche Braid; these are, nevertheless, well within the average baker's skill. In a world of baking books that offer the simplest and most traditional recipes only, or assume that readers have the time and technique to create multi-element extravaganzas, The Weekend Baker stands apart. Its approach is realistic without sacrificing good taste or recipe integrity. Dodge includes tips that cover familiar ground--get to know your oven, and the lik--but also offers, for example, "Bake It and Stow It," a detailed guide to storing sweets. Features like "Do-Aheads," and "Got Extra Time?," usefully further Dodge's quick-and-delicious approach. (She's also pleasingly droll; a really rich brownie is dubbed "prescription-strength."). With color photos, the book is a real addition to the harried baker's library. --Arthur Boehm

With 24 pages of color photographs of the finished dishes, The Weekend Baker promises to lure time-pressed bakers into the kitchen. 24 pages of color illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful addition to my collection!!!!.......2007-02-06
I purchased this book several months ago and I have to say that every recipe I've made has been superb! I really like the way each recipe is broken down into stages and the added bonus of variations to change things up a bit (if you care to do so). I highly recommend this cookbook to anyone who loves to bake, but can't take a whole day to do so. The author really has a passion for baking and it shows, trust me you won't be dissapointed!! Kudos!!
Well Used.......2006-07-26
I was working on a project that required multiple baked goods. In my search for a variety, I checked out several baking books from the library. Once my project ended, I had fallen in love with only one book and discovered I had to have the book for my own personal use. That book was, "The Weekend Baker" by Abigail Johnson Dodge.
Now, I'll be honest there are 3 things that I think you should consider if you are considering buying this book.
1. This is a hard bound book, which makes it slightly challenging to keep open on your counter as you work throught he recipe. A couple of #10 cans will easily help you out but it is a bit annoying.
2. This book is said to be for those who love to bake but struggle to find the time. While I agree, I think we forget that there are a lot of people who "love to bake" yet assume baking means boxed cake/brownine mixes, premade pie crusts or frozen cookie dough - it is important to note that this book is for people who love to bake FROM SCRATCH and are too busy. (My friend was disappointed in the book when she discovered Abigail is NOT Sandra Lee!)
3. Further to my note in #2, if you are baker who relies on photo images to assure your finished result is correct, you may be disappointed. While the photos that are in the book are fabulous they are sparse and not available for every recipe.
That being said; The Ginger Snaps on the cover are fabulous! I now have a friend that expects the Banana Cake with Fudgy Frosting every year for his birthday and in a recent search for the perfect "shortcake" this book provided the winning recipe! A wonderful book!
Love this Cookbook .......2006-06-29
If I had to keep one baking cookbook this would be it. The recipes are fabulous, easy and always fetch rave reviews. It is a definate asset to both the experienced and novice baker's kitchen.
irresistible, simple, stress free -- title says it all!.......2005-09-08
I'm a cookbook junkie on a short bookshelf leash so when I found out about this book, I checked it out of my library before I grabbed my checkbook just in case I was being lead astray by another pretty cover. Boy, did I underestimate this book! If you have an interest in baking, buy this book, buy it now, buy it for baking friends! I did.
It looks like a simple list of recipes that you probably already have in any number of other baking books, and really it is, but what makes this book so useful is that it's like all the best recipes in those books are condensed into one easy to read, easy to follow and easy to grab reference. It saves me time not because of any earth-shattering shortcuts, but because I don't have to sift through 10 baking books to find a recipe I want to make or spend time figuring out how I can spread out the recipe over time -- that's already done. And the author is fabulously reassuring that yes, you can do this if you have a few minutes, and yes, it will be worth it!
My only complaint: an index of recipes at the start of the three main chapters would make finding a particular recipe even quicker. Currently, I have to mark them with post-it flags, making my book look like it's eating a tibetan prayer flag.
Thanks for putting the fun back in baking!!
Superb book. .......2005-04-09
Being an avid baker I have just about all decent dessert cookbooks.
I recently took a class given by Ms. Dodge and purchased the book, it's outstanding. Simple, quick, easy to do ahead and *hold* for completion in 1-3 days. Having company? Start the dessert on Friday, finish on Saturday or Sunday. Spend time with your guests, not in the kitchen.
Just an all-around terrific book. I strongly recommend it.
July 2007 I initially posted over a year ago0: After using this book for quite some time now, I had to come back and tell you... it's the best. I really do enjoy it and purchased it for my daughters.
