Series heroine Alexandra Cooper, head of Manhattan's sex crimes unit, returns in a novel that might have been titled "Nevermore,": focused as it is on the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe. When the body of a two-decades-old skeleton is found bricked up behind a wall in a soon-to-be-demolished building where Poe once lived, it looks like a very cold case indeed. But then that old murder is linked to a more current slaying, one that at first looks like the work of the Silk Stocking Rapist, Alex's old enemy, who terrorized the upper East Side of Manhattan several years ago but hasn't been heard from since. As usual, Alex and her good friends, detectives Mercer Wallace and Mike Chapman, take the reader to an area of New York most tourists never see--in this case, the Bronx Botanical Gardens and its wild, forested environs--and bring it dramatically to life. Just in case Poe ever has his own category on Alex's favorite TV show, there's enough trivia included about the master of the macabre's life and work to propel any reader to Final Jeopardy. Entombed is a smart, stylish, well-told tale. --Jane Adams
Book Description
It was a crime scene Edgar Allan Poe himself could have conjured, only it was all too real: workers demolishing a nineteenth-century Greenwich Village brownstone where Poe once lived unearthed the skeleton of a young woman -- buried standing upright behind a brick wall. Manhattan Assistant D.A. Alexandra Cooper takes on the gruesome case while in pursuit of the Silk Stocking Rapist, who is terrorizing the Upper East Side. But Alex discovers that one crime thread leads to the other as she follows a trail of clues to the Bronx Botanical Gardens, where a group of Poe devotees may shed light on a stone-cold, modern-day murder of gothic proportions...and a cunning killer with a bone-chilling tale to tell.
Download Description
"From New York Times bestselling author and famed former Manhattan prosecutor Linda Fairstein comes a chilling new Alexandra Cooper novel, Entombed, in which Alex matches wits with the master of detective fiction himself-Edgar Allan Poe... Workers demolishing a nineteenth-century brownstone where Edgar Allan Poe once lived discover a human skeleton entombed -- standing -- behind a brick wall. When sex crimes prosecutor Alexandra Cooper hears about the case, it strikes her as a classic Poe scene...except that forensic evidence shows that this young woman died within the last twenty-five years. Meanwhile, Alex's old nemesis the Silk Stocking Rapist is once again terrorizing Manhattan's Upper East Side. The attacks soon escalate to murder, and the search leads Alex and detectives Mercer Wallace and Mike Chapman to the city's stunning Bronx Botanical Gardens. There, an enigmatic librarian presides over the Raven Society, a group devoted to the work of Poe. In exploring the fabled writer's tormented life for clues, Alex will cross paths with a cunning killer and face some of the greatest challenges of her career. Entombed is masterful, exhilarating crime fiction from one of crime writing's most dazzling stars. "

POE IS THE ANSWER...WHAT WAS THE QUESTION???.......2007-08-11
Fairstein's epistle gives the reader a lot of information to chew on and digest. First, we have the return of a rapist who has been strangely silent for the past four years, as well as a series of seemingly unconnected murders. When workmen demolishing a 19th century brownstone that was once the home of Edgar Allan Poe discover the body of a woman buried upright behind a brick wall it appears that "life is imitating art" and someone has taken a page out of a Poe novel.
Utilizing the search for the dual criminals as the "background" for the story, Fairstein takes us on a tour of the Bronx. She gives us an up close and personal look at the Botanical Gardens which contains 50 acres of forest, the waterfalls of the Bronx River Gorge, a "crystal palace" conservatory containing 17,000 glass panes, and the first Hall of Fame in America (an outdoor vista containing 98 bronze busts of Great Americans ranging from poets, to jurists, to soldiers).
And I thought Central Park was the only touch of green in NYC.
The garden, she tells us, was once owned by P. Lorillard, tobacco scion, and contains an old snuff mill as well as Poe cottage, where Poe lived with his wife/cousin until her death. (And now you have the "connector" between the Bronx Botanical Tour and the murderer who feels a kinship with Poe and commits his crimes according to macabre Poe plots).
Fairstein fleshes out her rather thin plot with loads of in depth facts and observations about everything from Fordham University to the Gould Library. All of the "facts" that liberally pepper the book could serve as the basis for a plethora of Jeopardy final questions (a game that her alter ego, Alex Cooper, and friends Mike and Mercer are rather fond of playing).
Emtombed is more a guided tour of the Bronx and a look at Poe's sad existance than the murder mystery with gothic overtones I'm sure it was meant to be.
Not As Good As Others.......2007-07-31
This book wasn't as good as the others. The Edgar Allan Poe parts were interesting but that's not why I bought the book. I bought it because of the way Ms. Fairstein puts together mysteries and her leads solve them. I loved how she usually has them interact both professionally and personally. But in this book it felt stilted and forced. I felt she had so many mysteries going on at once that she had to tie together that she didn't really do any of them justice. I was just disappointed in this book. Granted I haven't read all her books but the ones I have read are better than this. This one was jumbled up and wasn't logical. Alex Cooper has usually held her own but in this book, it was like she was a bumbling idiot. Just sad for this strong, smart character. I hope the series get better than this. Can't wait to give another a try.
Pure Genius.......2007-03-24
Great story with interesting plot twists. I learned new facts about the Poe family, such as February 2nd being the anniversary of Virginia Poe's funeral which is also the day "The Raven Returns" was written.
Good story but REALLY dumb errors........2006-07-19
Overall, I found this an entertaining read. Unlike a previous reviewer, I enjoyed the Poe references. But like a previous reviewer, I did find it amazing how the supposedly smart heroine got herself into so many really stupid situations.
And there were two really stupid errors in the book. First, there are no bats with 4 foot wing spans in New York. Or anywhere in the US, for that matter. Second, people who drown in fresh water do NOT have water in their lungs. The fresh water is sucked into the blood through the lungs by the great osmotic pressure differential between the very salty blood and the non-salty fresh water. Thus, inexperienced pathologists are often confused when a body of someone who drowned in fresh water is found to have no water in the lungs.
Poe is the best Part.......2006-06-21
As many other reviewers this is my first Linda Fairstein mystery. To start on the positive the description of the Bronx expecially the Botanical Gardens and Poe Park were interesting. I also learned a great deal about Poe. ( Poe seems in vogue with a new book by Matthew Pearl on Poe)
The characters seem to busy being clever to be interesting. Chapman's romance may be more meaningful to readers who know the series but all I thought it did was show they were deep and did not add to the story.
On the whole it is a diverting book but there are many better series.

Great cover, OK story.......2006-01-14
Following the story of an ex-Jesuit priest obsessed with fighting the forces of darkness, the tale takes us to a small mining town outside England where the old mines have been filled with evil. Originally the background of children being forced to work in the mines provides an interesting explanation, until the `real' explanation is given by Guy N. Smith toward the end of the book. I won't ruin the read for you by telling you what it is. Just trust me that it was more than a little pat, and tired.
The story could have been stronger, but sadly, the most original part of this novel is the wickedly illustrated cover. It doesn't help that the text is broken up by a preponderance of explanation points, and entire sections of story and dialogue are italicized for no apparent reason.
If you're looking for a kitchy, fun read, something that screams " I was written in the 80's!" this is the horror novel for you. But, if you're looking for a well-written or executed piece of horror fiction, but might do well to look elsewhere.

Absolutely hilarious.......2007-05-09
It's been a while since I've read this book, but I recall laughing myself silly every few pages. I am not, I repeat NOT, a Forgotten Realms fan. I've never read a single one except for this one. This book is more along the lines of a Terry Pratchett book. It's incredibly silly and the jokes are pretty good. I recommend it highly if you like Terry Pratchett. It doesn't have the depth of a typical Pratchett plot, but it is just as funny as one.
The book reads more like a cartoon than a fantasy. Expect that when going in. No suprise, considering the writer is a cartoon and comic book writer. If you look him up on imdb.com, you will see that he did the dialogue for the Discworld video games from the mid-90s. Hence, the silly novel this became.
Looking at the other reviews of this book, it looks like people were expecting a serious D&D fantasy story. Therefore, a lot of the reviews seem to be reflective of people's disappointments rather than a fair review of a book that was meant to be a comedy/parody.
Terrible, Terrible book.......2005-08-15
I have read every Forgotten Realms novel ever published. I have enjoyed almost every one of them. I don't think I have ever disliked a book this much in my life. This is the only book I have ever started that I haven't finished.
There is very little plot to this story, the characters could be found in any book, and the setting is just plain terrible.
If you choose to read this book, have a pillow close by as you will surely fall asleep.
An ok book, but barely an FR novel.......2003-02-01
One of my big contentions is that when I read a Forgotten Realms novel, I want to know I am reading a FR novel. While not a bad book, this could have been placed into practically any fantasy setting and it would have altered very little. The Princess and her suitor are entertaining, but the rest of the book is flat. The one item of interest is the suiotr's abilty to just create incredible items that work without the need of magic. It is interesting to see modern warfare in a fantasy book, but at the same time a little disconcerting. Give it a read if you want something really out of the ordinary.
A fun ride.......2002-06-11
It wasn't quite what I expected from a forgotten realms novel. Thing happend in a tiny place of no outside importance. A place with strange, pompous, and sometimes rididculous rules of warfare.
This book is hilarious. The vast majority of the book wil make you laugh. But along the way characters are developed. Make no mistake, there is a story here. There is drama, characterization, and plot, but humor underlies them all.
Not your typical FR book........2002-04-07
Although not quite as polished as his Greyhawk trilogy, I still found this book to be quite enjoyable. It's not your typical FR novel, but considering how formulaic the line has become, this is a good thing. Kidd's stories include unusual characters, and the dialogue sparkles with wit. If you're looking for a standard fantasy novel look elsewhere. If you're looking for something engaging and different, read this.

It would be nice to have pediatricians at your beck and call for every cough and wheeze, but the era of house visits is past. When the weather's raw and your child's in pain, start with your reference shelf. Donald Schiff and Steven Shelov have arranged the contents of the Guide to Your Child's Symptoms by the child's age: you'll find symptom guides from baby's colic, diarrhea, and spitting up to your adolescent's anxiety, depression, and skin problems. For each symptom, there's a description of usual causes, a chart of questions to consider, and what action to take. There's also an illustrated "First-Aid Manual." Guide to Your Child's Symptoms is a first-rate resource that explains when bed rest will do and when to get on the phone to your pediatrician.
Book Description
When an infant or small child is ill, it is often very difficult for a parent to understand or diagnose the nature of the problem. Since babies can't articulate what ails them, in most cases all a parent has to go on is the symptom that the child exhibits.
The American Academy of Pediatrics Guide to Your Child's Symptoms has been prepared by a team of the country's best pediatricians to enable a parent to quickly identify a symptom, learn its possible cause, and determine how best to proceed, whether it's taking action at home or calling the pediatrician immediately. The symptoms are listed alphabetically, and the text and illustrations that accompany each one are arranged in easy-to-follow charts. Unlike most child-care and parenting books, which are dense and text-heavy, this book lets a parent quickly assess the problem and decide what needs to be done for the child. The first of the book covers the 100 or so most common symptoms in A-Z format. The second part is an illustrated first-aid manual.
The American Academy of Pediatrics is the most respected authority on child health in America, and the
Guide to Your Child's Symptoms is an essential family reference that belongs in every household.

Fantastic Baby Shower gift! Wonderful book.......2007-05-21
A great all-around, general reference for babycare & childcare. Excellent baby shower gift - most pregnant women get too many baby clothes, stuffed animals, blankets and other useless gifts, but what parents need is good, sensible child care books. This is a good start for parents to have, and they can add specialty books about co-sleeping, or sleep-training, or discipline, and use the this AAP book to compare different solutions to parenting challenges.
Life Saver.......2006-02-12
I love, love, love this book. I have used this book more times than I can count. I highly recommend this one. If you have children buy it!

This book is easy to use and addresses topics easily and concisely. It's a great resource to refer to when you don't have a true emergency and don't want to call your doctor's office for every issue that arises with your child.
