Book Description
Tony Valentine is an expert at spotting cheats. He’s tossed them out of gambling casinos from Atlantic City to Las Vegas and Monaco. But though Tony has never met a scam he couldn’t crack, his son and partner, Gerry, has just walked into one with a body count.
What started with a conman’s deathbed confession turns into a deadly Las Vegas grudge match during the world’s biggest poker tournament. While Gerry and his shady friends tangle with the Vegas mob, Tony enlists the aid of an aging grifter who’s fleecing suckers with a dazzling array of improbable betting stunts. Tony’s been hired to save the tournament (and stop a blind player who’s out to heist it), while Gerry’s just trying to stay alive–now that murder is in the cards.
Featuring insider tips for catching poker cheats, as well as a glossary of card hustler terms!

Half a book.......2007-07-23
The writing is great and the build up to the end is great but there is no payoff. We have to buy the next book to figure out what is going to happen (I think). Frustrating and disappointing.
You gotta know when to fold 'em.......2007-06-22
Based on the first third of this book, I would give this 4 stars. The characters were interesting, and I was enjoying myself. Then the story really slowed down, with lots of side stuff. Then I figured out I would need to get the next book Deadman's Bluff to finish the story. So minus 1 star for taking a single 1 book story and splitting into 2 books to extort money. And clearly, it would have been 2 short books so filler was added. Another minus star for boring side stories; the Rufus scammer character is interesting in moderation, but after the fly, horserace, golf, ping pong, cat, x-ray vision, etc. scams, it was tiring. They didn't add anything, other than the mildly entertaining "how he tricked the Greek" variety. But they were too long as side stories, and it was ludicrous that the main character and his tacked-on "love" interest kept saying "there's no way he can do this" over and over again. Look, Rufus is a grifter, he will win not by playing by the rules. No reader was saying "yeah, there is no way" rather it was, "ok, what dumb trick will he use." So the dialog seemed contrived to try to make these side stories more dramatic. Didn't work. And in the end, the way that the tournament cheating was done, you probably will have figured out, and it isn't very "wow" to justify buying and reading 2 books. Even though my review sounds negative, I was impressed with the beginning of this book, and I assume that the rest of this book and the 2nd one were boring because the author (editor/publisher) were trying to stretch this out to sell twice as many books. If you just read this book and not the 2nd you really will be unhappy (1 star happy). However, given the good beginning of this book, I'm going to try Mr. Lucky and give this author 1 more chance. I think he is better than whomever told him to stretch this thin story to two volumes. The author seems to have a great sense of gambling, Atlantic City, and grifters. If these 2 books were 1, and tightened up by dropping a ton of Rufus stuff, this would be 4 stars!
Here comes a another one.......2007-03-01
I really like Swain. I really like Valentine. I even kinda like his kid. I'm not too sure about this novel. You see it's not finished. There's some strange, fatal method of winning at poker - maybe like what killed that Russian spy_ but after a lot of novel we do not yet know. Nor does Tony. I sure hope no one climbs up a rope and disappears in the follow up. You see, there is an old con man who makes and wins absurd bets with gamblers in Las Vegas. I suspect the chances of getting away with those bets would be about the same as not experiencing leg breaking ,cause they are on the order of "Betcha I can tell you where you got them shoes." So here we are anticipating a resolution to the surefire poker win and are only half the way there while being entertained with side shows. Maybe Swain needed some cash and had only half the novel done. After all, the carnie makes as much geeking as on the midway. I hope that's it cause now I am waiting for the follow up. Hooked I guess.Decide for yourself. Double or nothing. Watta bet!!!
Beware...#1 of a Two parter.......2007-01-19
The problem with some author's today is that they decide (or their publishers encourage them) to write a 2 part-er. Then, they do not let you knw this on the cover (probably so if you read the paperback, you can then buy the hardcover). The problem with these books is that the 2nd part usually spends a lot of time covering the same ground as the first book, and (as reviewers already state for book #2 - Deadman's bluff - you do not even need to read this one to appreciate that work!).
Otherwise this would get 4 stars. Swain's writing is much better, and his plot points no longer carry the huge unbelievable stretches of imagination (like actual mind reading monkeys) that his earlier works do. One good aspect of Swain's books is that the author allows us to enjoy Vegas while at the same time not hiding his personal distain for the gambling mecca.
I recommend this, as long as you know it is #1 of 2 and though side plot points will be solved, the main case will not until you read "bluff."
Deadmen tell no tales... or do they?.......2006-09-09
For anyone who enjoys an exciting, fast paced mystery, "Deadman's Poker" is a must read. For anyone with an interest in poker or any competitive card game, Deadman's Poker is certainly a must read. The story hits the ground running right from page one and from there on I couldn't put the book down.
"Deadman's Poker" has it all; murder, mystery, intrigue, romance, full of life characters, and a background of pop culture in the form of the popular trend of poker tournaments. Jim Swain deftly leads the reader through gripping plot twists and turns which take you deeper and deeper into the intrigue and mystery of the con as Investigator Tony Valentine gets deeper and deeper into the web of deception and cheating going on at the world's largest poker tournament.
Do yourself a favor, when you pick up "Deadman's Bluff", get "Deadman's Poker". You are going to want to open "Bluff" as soon as you finish "Poker". These two novels are contemporary pop-mystery writing at its finest.

love love love this book!.......2007-10-06
I tried many books, but this one was honest and easy to use. I felt better reading the mayo clinc book after i tried many others, like the famous "what to expect when your expecting".... felt too short in my answers about my body and medical questions. Buy this book and don't waste your time and money with the others. Have a nice journey with your new baby. :)
Really a great resource!.......2007-09-24
This is my first baby, so I am clueless about everything. This book is very informative and has really delivered an education. I can read about what is going on with my baby right now, and what is going on with me! A must-have for any mom to be.
The Best Pregnancy Book Ever.......2007-09-17
I purchased this book on my doctor's recommendation, and it has been, hands down, the most informative book I've read about pregnancy. This is my first pregnancy, so of course I've also read "What to Expect When You're Expecting," along with several other books on pregnancy. The Mayo Clinic Guide is the most reliable and medically accurate book to reference while pregnant. It is much more organized and straight-forward than any of the other books out there. If you're pregnant or considering having a child, make sure you don't miss this book.
Mayo Clinic Pregnancy Guide.......2007-08-29
This has been a very interesting book. It reviews everything from the size of the baby week by week to various forms of testing. The book is broken down in the month by month categories, then specific topics. It's a book that you can read from cover to cover, or just hit the points that are important to you at that moment. I would recommend it for expecting mothers.
Excellent service.......2007-08-28
I received this book very quickly and in perfect condition. Happy to do business w/ you!

"This is a cookbook for vegetable lovers--and vegetable haters," says Andrea Chesman in The Roasted Vegetable. Her argument is that roasting veggies brings out their "hidden sweet, nutty flavors," making them irresistible to carrot-hating kids and vegan adults alike. She supports this theory with 150 tantalizing recipes, starting with a sizeable serving of side dishes, then broadening to include salsas, soups, salads, sandwiches, pasta, pizza, tofu, granola, and more. Beyond obvious inclusions like roasted peppers, french fries, and chestnuts, there's Garlic Puree ("like a basic black dress, it goes with almost anything") and Roasted Kohlrabi, which "looks like a spaceship that has sprouted leaves." Another standout is the Roasted Tomato Sauce, for which tomatoes are roasted up to one and a half hours until they've broken down to form a thick sauce; the recipe also has variations for pasta, enchiladas, and Middle Eastern dishes. In addition, the book covers basic techniques and equipment and includes a handy roasting chart--all aimed to help readers' roasted vegetables come out perfectly "tender-crisp." --Andy Boynton
Book Description
Andrea Chesman assembles a mouthwatering collection of 150 meat-free recipes, from simple sides to main dishes.

A Gem.......2006-11-14
I thought I knew what you needed to know about roasting vegetables: a 425 degree oven, vegetables drizzled with oil, an hour for sturdy root vegetables, less time for everything else. Then I found this book at the local library and discovered that I knew diddley. I went out and bought it.
Chesman offers recipes for appetizers, entrees and other dishes. She makes magic with the vegetables anyone can easily find in the supermarket or roadside stand. She uses fresh herbs frequently, but is not fussy about any specifics, so you can work with what you have. The first thing I discovered, as someone who is gas-grilless in this age of the grilled vegetable, is that many of Chesman's roasted vegetables, particularly the spring and summer ones, do a great stand-in for the grilled variety. She provides a general chart for roasting times and temperatures of various vegetables and I've been able to extropolate off it and make up my own dishes. My balsamic and cardoman roasted mushrooms have transformed pizza.
The recipes all revolve around vegetables and none call for meat of any kind. That's okay. You don't miss it.
I'm no vegetarian, but I fell in love with this book the moment I picked it up. .......2006-08-21
"The Roasted Vegetable" is a wondeful example of a cookbook which stays "on task" and fulfills the promise of its title.
I'd had good results with recipes for roasted root vegetables, roasted asparagus, and roasted nuts from other cookbooks, so you could say that I was "ripe" for this volume, but still...5 minutes after picking this book off the racks and sampling the recipes, I was at the register and on my way home to try some of them. And "The Roasted Vegetable" has completely rewarded and repaid my faith in it with a wonderful variety of well designed dishes that even an undistinguished cook like myself can make and enjoy. I am also reasonably confident, given the nature of most of the dishes, that many of the recipes could also be reproduced on a smaller scale in a good toaster/convection oven, which adds to the convenience and possible applications for smaller families, couples, and solo diners.
You will understand the possibilities of roasted vegetables just by glancing through this book for a few minutes. Even if you have little-to-no interest in vegetarianism, even if you wolf down a Delmonico 4 times a week, you will find plenty of recipes to spark your interest here. The dishes are fairly simple to execute (there are a few more involved exceptions) and reward the cook with flavorful, satisfying dishes. Not only that, but since you are indeed "eating your vegetables" just like your mother wanted, you get the satisfaction of knowing you are doing something good for yourself.
And it does all this without the tedious self-righteousness and endless "cut the fat" mantra of the typical "low fat healthy cooking" book. This book is about the flavor and about the enjoyment of your veggies and nuts, and health benefits are just a side effect of good food, done right. That's my kind of cookbook.
This is definitely worth your time if you come across it, and worth seeking out if you are looking for ways to make a more balanced diet without feeling deprived or put upon.
Not just for vegetarians..........2003-08-25
My husband and I were bored, bored, bored with vegetables until we picked this up. Easy to make recipes with a minimum of cleanup and absolutely delicious. We use our gas grill to roast the veggies for extra kick and ease of preparation. All the recipes use common ingredients- many of them you can just whip up with what you've got in the house left over from your weekly shopping! Serve any recipe in the book with a nice grilled steak or piece of fresh fish for an exquisite meal.
absolutley wonderful.......2003-03-10
I knew I had found a great cookbook when, as I leafed through its pages, every recipe sounded like something I would like to make. The vegetable tart featured on the cover is simple to make and always a hit. Every recipe I have tried has been delicious. Some can be more time consuming, but if you plan accordingly, they are worth it. This has definitely become my "go to" cookbook when entertaining, as the dishes are varied, uncomplicated, taste wonderful, and it's unlikely my guests have cooked them recently- although I don't know for sure- I've been giving everyone I know who enjoys cooking this book!! The bejewelled squash cubes are another crowd pleaser, and the herb-roasted root vegetables went over big with an avowed vegetable hater. Whether you are looking for a new side dish or a complete meal, I highly recommend this cookbook.
Great cookbook!.......2002-08-11
I love this cookbook. I really enjoy roasting vegetables because the flavors become so intensified. I haven't found the recipes to be too complex - they generally have 5-6 steps, and the first one is usually to preheat the oven, the last one is to serve hot or whatever. So I've found it pretty straight forward. The ingredients are a great mix - not your basic salt & pepper but adding things like honey or spices like cumin or cilantro. Really really tasty stuff here. Highly recommeded and I'd definitely buy it again!

From the supplier: New products from Kraft, Dean Foods Vegetable Co and Mott's are evaluated. Kraft's Slow Simmered Roasted Garlic Barbecue Sauce has a strong garlic-y smell and tastes very well with grilled chicken. Dean Foods' new canned vegetables from Freshlike are also very good, particularly Italian Style Green Beans, Whole Kernel Corn & Red Peppers, and Sweet Peas & Tiny Onions. Tropical Blend, the new flavor of Mott's Fruitsations line of apple sauces, tastes very sour at first but becomes tastier after a while.
