5 out of 5 stars Must Read for History Buffs.......2007-04-07

This is a mystery novel set in the Middle Ages, part of Roberta Gellis' series with Madeleine la Batarde and a worthy addition to the series. As a mystery it is enjoyable both in terms of the puzzle presented and in terms of solution without the scientific evidence we are accustomed to accepting. (No fingerprints, much less DNA) However, it is also well worth reading for the glimpse into life as it was lived in the Middle Ages, which can be surprisingly modern in some ways and just as surprisingly incomprehensible in others. Ms. Gellis has a truly fine grasp of what the dry history must have meant to the people who were living it and a talent for conveying the feel of it so that the reader feels he or she has had a chance to visit the era rather than be lecturec about it. For instance, she can convey both the insanitary conditions and the people's total acceptance of those conditions as "ordinary" life. That is a talent in the writing that is extremely enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2007-01-10

This is Roberta Gellis at her best. It has an intriguing plot with many surprises. The Magdalene La Batarde series are generally very good, but this is possibly the best yet. The historical setting is as enthralling as ever, and the fix the Bishop of Winchester finds himself in can only be solved by the genius of Magdalene and her women and her faithful Bell. If you like a very entertaining mystery this is great.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but ...........2006-11-03

Gellis' books in this historical series, of which this is the most recent, are all enjoyable reads. While one gets a bit tired of the female protagonist continually reminding everyone in sight that she is a prostitute/whore, nevertheless, the implications of Chains of Folly advance the story through the increasingly intricate machinations and intrigue going on around her to the questions posed in the first volume, and played with intermittently in the subquent ones: Can Madelaine continue to develop her menage of interesting people to provide a semi-respectable and secure place of resort? Or, will the secret in her past be discovered? What will then happen to her? Will her noble protector help or abandon her? What will her jealous, difficult lover do? Because of these questions, in one sense, this particular book in the series is a filler; in its own right, it is a fascinating account of the political and military situation in medieval England and how the leading characters in the story schemed and battled for position and security. Buy it, but look forward to the next volume also.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous medieval who-done-it.......2006-05-06

In medieval England, the Bishop of Winchester turns in for the night only to find the corpse of a woman dressed like a whore. He calls for his trusted aid, Sir Bellamy of Itchen, who finds the woman holds a letter from Robert of Gloucester, the enemy of the King, addressed to the Bishop. Bellamy and the Bishop conclude that someone is setting up the religious leader to discredit him on the eve of a religious concave that will probably scold the monarch for his actions against the Bishop of Salisbury.

Reluctantly Bellamy agrees to investigate who would commit homicide to deface the Bishop. He starts his inquiries visiting his estrange former lover Magdalene la Batarde, the whoremistress of the Old Priory Guesthouse as she knows all the girls and their customers. .Her information not given with any cooperation leaves an open field from the king to any one of several nobles coveting the bestowal of royal favorite status, but she and Bell investigate together.

Roberta Gellis, the grand dame of medieval thrillers, is at the top of her game with this terrific historical mystery that uses the homicide and the social pecking order to tell a vivid tale. The story line actually takes off rather quickly with Magdalene on the case from near the start and never takes a break until the climatic confrontation with the knife wielding killer. Fans will appreciate how the sleuthing team knows when to tiptoe with extreme caution and when to smash and crash as who is the recipient of the inquiries is more important than what one learns if the detectives want to keep their heads about them. CHAINS OF FOLLY is a fabulous medieval who-done-it.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You Ms Gellis.......2006-04-27

The bit of a personal cliffhanger at the end of the third volume of the set, made the determination of her publisher not to pick up the fourth volume in this medieval mystery series particularly distressing. However, Five star stepped into the breach and has brought out Chains of Folly to my great relief.

Once again, Gellis takes the reader to the environs of the Old Priory Guesthouse, run by whoremistress Magdalene who finds herself juggling personal feelings, disturbing political events and her own complicated business as she tries to solve the mystery of the dead prostitute found seated at a table in the Bishop's private apartment.

Gellis' intimate knowledge of medieval life and events makes this a particularly engrossing story.

If you own only one anthology of classic science fiction, it should be The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume One, 1929-1964. Selected by a vote of the membership of the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA), these 26 reprints represent the best, most important, and most influential stories and authors in the field. The contributors are a Who's Who of classic SF, with every Golden Age giant included: Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, John W. Campbell, Robert A. Heinlein, Fritz Leiber, Cordwainer Smith, Theodore Sturgeon, and Roger Zelazny. Other contributors are less well known outside the core SF readership. Three of the contributors are famous for one story--but what stories!--Tom Godwin's pivotal hard-SF tale, "The Cold Equations"; Jerome Bixby's "It's a Good Life" (made only more infamous by the chilling Twilight Zone adaptation); and Daniel Keyes's "Flowers for Algernon" (brought to mainstream fame by the movie adaptation, Charly).

The collection has some minor but frustrating flaws. There are no contributor biographies, which is bad enough when the author is a giant; but it's especially sad for contributors who have become unjustly obscure. Each story's original publication date is in small print at the bottom of the first page. And neither this fine print nor the copyright page identifies the magazines in which the stories first appeared.

Prefaced by editor Robert Silverberg's introduction, which describes SFWA and details the selection process, The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume One, 1929-1964 is a wonderful book for the budding SF fan. Experienced SF readers should compare the table of contents to their library before making a purchase decision. Fans who contemplate giving this book to non-SF readers should bear in mind that, while several of the collected stories can measure up to classic mainstream literary stories, the less literarily-acceptable stories are weighted toward the front of the collection; adult mainstream-literature fans may not get very far into The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume One, 1929-1964. --Cynthia Ward

      Book Description

This volume is widely respected as the definitive collection of the best science fiction stories published between 1929 and 1964. Chosen by science fiction writers themselves, these 26 stories, by their sheer diversity of style and subject, illustrate the incredible latitude encompassed by the term 'science fiction.' Robert Heinlein, in 'The Roads Must Roll,' describes an industrial civilization caught up in the deadly flaws of its own complexity. 'Country of the Kind' by Damon Knight is a frightening portrayal of biological mutation. 'Nightfall' by Isaac Asimov, a chilling study in mass psychology, is the story of a planet where the sun sets only once every millennium. Originally published in 1970 to honor stories that had come before the institution of the Nebula Awards, The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Vol-ume One introduced tens of thousands of young readers to the wonders of science fiction, and was a favorite of libraries across the country. Too long unavailable, this new edition will be treasured by science fiction fans.

I've purchased this book in paperback and hardcover many times over because I keep giving copies away. This is an indespensible introduction to the art of writing short fiction, sci-fi style. Character studies, logic puzzles, future societies, deaths of civilizations, it's all in here. Emphatically recommended.

My Mom had a dog eared paperback copy of this book from her college days. I remember reading and rereading it as a young boy. It, more than any other book, ignited my passion for science fiction. Every story is a winner and each serves as a jumping off point to explore the author's further work. Of all the SF anthologies, this is the best and is an essential part of any SF fan's library.

Most of the stories in hear are fantastic. The intro also includes a listing of the 20 best voted scifi short stories, which I found myself refering to to see if I could relate to the 'experts' opinions. There are a few stinkers in the bunch, which I'm sure is inevitable, but probably not as many as you'd find as in other collections.

When the Science Fiction Writers of America added the word fantasy to their name in 1992 (becoming the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America), the SFWA membership thought it would be a good idea to create a defining collection of stories from their newly adopted genre. Accordingly, SFWA members nominated and voted for stories up to 17,500 words in length that were published between 1939 and 1990, eventually ending up with the top 15 stories and 15 runners-up. Those stories were collected in this book, a companion to SFWA's 1967 collection The Science Fiction Hall of Fame. Editor Robert Silverberg calls the Fantasy Hall of Fame "a definitive one-volume library of the modern fantasy short story," and as usual he's correct. Although you might not agree with all the choices (the most popular story turned out to be "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson), you'll find that every piece here is a true gem, from Anthony Boucher's Compleat Werewolf to Roger Zelazny's Unicorn Variations. --Craig E. 5 out of 5 stars The finest collection of fantasy stories ever printed.......2000-07-19

"The Fantasy Hall of Fame" fills an enormous hole in the fantasy world. While many of the best works in the genre are short stories, short stories rarely stay in print for long. This anthology presents the finest tales ever written in the genre; with rare exception, almost any reader's favorites can be found here. Robert Silverberg hasn't done many anthologies in recent years, but he used to put out one every year, and he hasn't lost his touch. Any young reader of fantasy novels looking for a new chunk of his favorite reading material will be ecstatic; any long-time reader will be overjoyed to greet old friends once more. The list of stories included is too long to be included here (which in itself is a good sign!), but my favorites include Robert Bloch's "That Hell-Bound Train" and Anthony Boucher's "Compleat Werewolf." A first-rate collection!

Each and everyone of these stories is a landmark. If you are a fantasy reader, Its the best place to investigate the roots of almost each and everyone of your beloved stories. If you are a beginner, there isnt a better place to start your exploration in this field!

      Book Description

This is the best book of its kind in at least two decades. It is a literate, intelligent book of powerful SF stories from across Europe.
These tales are representativeof the best writers and stories of the last twenty years, written in most of the major contemporary European languages.
The SFWA European Hall of Fame includes someof the biggest SF names in Europe, including Joanna Sinisalo, Andreas Eschbach, Elena Arseneva, and Jean-Claude Dunyach. The appeal of this anthology rests first upon the venerable SFWA Hall of Fame imprimatur, and secondly on the sterling reputation of co-editor/writer James Morrow.
Morrow and his wife Kathryn spent years arranging for translations of the best in European SF, and working with translators to achieve sharp, polished, and entertaining English versions of the stories.
James Morrow has written a thought-provoking introductory essay, as well as informative story notes throughout the collection. This anthology joins the canonical SFWA Hall of Fame books that have sold hundreds of thousands of copies over four decades, and belongs in every library of SF, personal or public.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and fresh.......2007-06-12

The twenty plus contributors to the original SFWA Hall of Fame were all authors I read previously. However, this European version is quite the opposite having read only one of the sixteen contributors prior to this introduction to these talented writers. This brings a unique freshness as the American audience is introduced to the cross Atlantic writers that the Morrows felt were deserving of wider readership. In the Introduction James Morrow explains the difference between Americans and Europeans as follows: "Europeans think one hundred miles is a long distance, and Americans think one hundred years is a long time". In many ways this sums up the similarities and difference. All the tales were written over the last two decades; none originally in English though translated for this compilation; this adds to the feel of visiting new realms. The authors come from all over Europe: France, Russia, Italy, Czech Republic, Finland, Poland, Spain, Greece, Romania, Germany, Portugal, and Holland. The stories are all well written and obviously translate smoothly into English. They run the gamut from a Dutch Orwell (see W.J. Maryson's "Verstummte Musik") to a "Swift" Finish A Modest Proposal that is a condemnation of free trade that exploits children. These are fabulous entries that belie the fact they are translations. SFWA's European vacation is a terrific collection, which begs to ask other translation anthologies from Asia, South America, and Africa to follow?

This book is truly a collection of great stories from between the years of 1929 and 1964. I am glad they reprinted this book because my older version is yellowing. I hope one day they will reprint a new hard back copy and I will buy it also.

Even though this book is packed from cover to cover with intriguing stories, I bought it for one story in particular "Mimsy Were the Borogoves" by Lewis Padgett. First published in 1943 ("Lewis Padgett" was a pseudonym employed by Henry Kuttner and his wife, C. L. Moore)

My first encounter with this story was a vinyl record recording with William Shatner later it is replaces with a cassette tape. I believe this book is the only surviving form of the story.

Unthahorsten is experimenting with time travel and sends two black boxes back into the past. He had to put something in them so as a last minute thought places his old toys in them. They do not return so he forgets them. It is too late the mischief is done. One is found by children in 1942. The other well look at the title for a clue.

              Book Description

"Questioning" is a skill rarely taught in school, but doing it well - that is, asking the right questions of the right people - can radically transform attitudes, actions, and results. Change Your Questions, Change Your Life provides easy-to-learn tools that can make a significant and immediate difference in people's business and personal lives. Written as an engaging fable, it inspires readers to take charge of their thinking in order to accomplish goals, improve relationships, advance careers, investigate new territories, and in general gain greater life satisfaction. This book explains how to "be your own coach," outlines the author's QuestionThinking Model, and lists the top 12 questions for change. Real-world examples provide practical models for applying the principles in a variety of situations, while a Choice Map is a useful visual tool that demonstrates that everyone has a choice in every situation, even if it is not immediately apparent.

5 out of 5 stars questions are more important than answers.......2007-07-16

If given a difficult problem and 20 hours to solve it, I would spend 19 hours framing the question. This is a paraphrase from Albert Einstein. The way a person approaches life truly defines the outputs that they get out of it. Can 3-5 hours with a book change your life?

4 out of 5 stars A new way to ask what's going on.......2007-03-30

Marilee G. Adams found that she could generate positive changes in her behavior and productivity by changing the defensive questions that she previously asked in the face of adversity. Analyzing those protective questions showed her that she took setbacks and criticism too personally. Asking different questions enabled her to reframe each moment and create growth opportunities. Adams illustrates the problem-solving power of honest curiosity. Her "QuestionThinking" method generates practical ways to change your mind, literally. These are great ideas; however, their repetition within a fictional storyline may annoy some readers, while others may like this allegorical approach to telling the tale. The self-questioning techniques are easy to employ, and will help you examine situations from different points of view, which can come in quite handy. We recommend adding this set of tools to your interpersonal communication toolkit.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but I felt it was not what I expected but I did learn a thing or two........2007-01-25

I was looking forward to reading the book. I have always thought that questions, or as the book states, great questions lead to great results were important. At first, I thought the way the book was written as a story was unique. Something like , The Richest Man in Babylon, one of my favorite books regarding financial independence. And yet, I was waiting for the great finale that never came. It was said , the main character, Ben and the company became succesful and it was because of the questions and they gave some examples, I expected more, more details, more information.

That said, it gave some practice exercises that made sense especially the one about the phone ringing, do you answer it , do you wait. When something happens , use the same technique, observe before you do something. And switching from judge to learner was valuable. Ask the right question and switch role which can make a big difference.

There was some great insights regarding questions. And the role you take , as one of Judge or learner was good. I was asking myself during this time, I am judging , how can I change that. How is the person I am interacting with feeling, what are their wants.

I do recommend it , if anything you will be aware of the questions you ask yourself during important decisions and thru out the day.

              5 out of 5 stars A MUST Read!.......2007-01-10

This book was easy to read, yet hard to put down. The author does an excellent job bringing you through Ben's journey - you can see the shift in his thinking and how his way of being impacts those around him. The examples of how simply shifting your perspective (or in this case, Question Thinking) can shift your attitude and your experiences are useful personally and professionally. The Judger/Learner concept is a simple yet powerful distinction that I have referred to for coaching clients stuck in moving forward due to living on the Judger path.

4 out of 5 stars Open versus closed.......2006-11-23

The storyline- Ben's crisis - is a very useful means of conveying the message - how we show up at work is how we show up at home. This reinforces the mindset that we are the same person wherever we are - albeit circumstances may dictate variations on the theme.

The Learner vs. Judger model is remniscent with the 90's theme of open thinking vs. closed thinking....however, I see the value of choosing the words Judger and Learner. The charts and graphs were very helpful in making this a useable process to shift thinking in ourselves, at work and at home.

I particularly focused on the questions provided regarding Great results begin with great questions. Will use this premise with my clients.

Thank you, Ms. Adams, for sharing your insight and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Munich Beer Drinkers.......2007-05-12

This book is suprisingly good and gives extended information about various interesting locales in Munich. The beer locales are a kick. One could spend the whole trip visiting these occasionally quite interesting and cozy dispensers of comustibles and brews.

5 out of 5 stars Author is Also a Great Pitcher.......2007-02-06

I know Larry Hawthorne as a comptetitive ballplayer who hits a lot better than your average pitcher. Knowing him this way, and being a writer myself, I recommend his book because I know he is honest, a clean player, and would not steer you wrong. Not a good enough reason to buy the book?
I could say, as the old joke goes about politicians, that he has never done a mean, rotten thing that he hasn't been sorry for, but I haven't known Larry long enough to know if he has ever done a mean, rotten thing. I know he is generous with baseball tips and has the best cooler on the sidelines. If you met him on the street he would greet you with a smile. In fact, if I asked him, he would autograph your book for you. That's how nice a guy he is. What more do you want from a book about beer in Munich? Check the excerpt and other reviews and see for yourself. If he is reading this right now, he is slapping his head with his hand and saying, "The next time Steve comes up to bat I'm pitching him a slow fat one right across the plate so he can hit it out of the park for the first time in his life!" That's how nice a guy he is.
I met him in the high deserts of south california, out where Jesus lost his boots, where right field is littered with gopher holes, where the 'Swingin' Steves' try to give him fits by getting line drives, and I'm glad I got the chance to get to know him. He made my first year as a softball player a lot more enjoyable, which was real special to me because I hadn't played since high school and needed all the help I could get. If you are still reading this then you are a serious beer drinker and if you are planning on going anywhere near Munich you need Larry by your side. From the other reviews you can see he is a great guide and knows his stuff (and his hops, he's always talking about the hops) so I will tell you the one flaw I found in Larry. He swings at everything. But he has a respectable batting average so I'm not going to knock what works for him. I'm a little shorter than him so maybe that makes me want to wait for the best pitch because I dont have the strength he does to drive the ball into the gaps. Well, I was kidding about Larry giving me a big fat pitch for this rambling review, in fact he might just hunker down and feed me low inside pitches because he can and he wants his team to win as much as I do. Like I said, a great competitor and if I still drank beer (diabetes) and had an urge to visit my great-great-grandparents homeland (apparently one of us was a king in Denmark around 1000 ad) I would still buy the cheapest version of this book I could find (that's just me, I'm cheap) but I would read it cover to cover because I trust this guy to give me the real deal. Hoist one for Larry, beer and book fans, and just for your information I wrote this cold sober. Honest. Why would I lie? And if any reporters for the National Enquirer or da Globe, etc. want the real inside dope on Larry I would be willing to supply even more colorful anecdotes to prove it.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!.......2007-01-22

This book more than pays for itself with the coupons for free beer in the back! Great book too. Has directions to a lot of amazing beirgartens!

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me find beer!.......2006-11-10

I went to Munich for Oktoberfest this year -- got there on a Thursday night and left the following Wednesday. Monday was spent at Oktoberfest. That meant Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday we needed to find beer gardens! This book was the perfect guide -- you can find them by S or U-Bahn stop, even! The 2-for-one certificates were a special bonus. I logged all the beers I drank on the inside cover -- 35 beers in 5 days. Nine of those were the masse size. Burp. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Best Tour Book.......2005-09-10

I have gone through 3 versions of this book, been to Munich 6 times, and I still find new and exciting things to do by reading it.

The BDG2M allows you to sample the best Munich has to offer, and to go to places that tourists and locals love. Reading the book gives you a good idea of the wonderful culture, that IS Bavaria. It's not all about drinking beer, but the unique sense of community, family, and history you will find.

The directions to the beer halls are great. They are simple, easy to follow, and close to infallible. Of course, when there is beer at the end of the road, you tend not to get lost. ;-)

I applaud Larry in his everlasting devotion to this subject. Every edition is fresh, and new adventures await every turn of the page.
