Book Description
Blanco County, Texas. It's one week before the start of deer hunting season, and everyone in town has come down with a case of....Buck Fever. The fury begins with Red O'Brien and Billy Don Craddock, two drunken poachers who fire a shot in the direction of Blanco County's most important resident: a wide-eyed, white-tailed deer named Buck who lives on the Circle S ranch. Now Buck is on the loose, and no one knows where to find him: not Trey Sweeney, the man who took the bullet meant for Buck, albeit right in the flank of his own deer costume; not Tim Gray, the veterinarian who can't function very long without popping a few canine tranquilizers; and especially not Roy Swank, owner of the Circle S, who wants desperately to find Buck for reasons no one can quite understand. Navigating all this turmoil is Blanco County Game Warden John Marlin, with a little help from his best friend Phil and a beautiful nurse named Becky who seems too good to be true. But when a dead body turns up, the real mystery in madcap Blanco County soon boils down to a single question: Just who is hunting whom?

If You Like this Novel Also Check Out the Author C.J, Box Who Writes Similar Game Warden Novels Set in Wyoming.......2007-10-07
This is a great light fun read! If you loved this book also check out the author C.J. Box and his Joe Pickett adventures which also follow a game warden based near a hunting culture small town filled with eccentric red necks, corrupt officials and other fun characters, his books are set in Wyoming. Both even have similar author photos complete with dogs and bucket hats or whatever they're called inside the back covers. Open Season is the first novel in that great series, check it out!
Buck Fever is actually only book one in a series of adventures set in Blanco County Texas. Being the author's debut novel you'd expect it to have a few flaws but pleasantly surprised you will be that although may not be as funny as his more recent stuff, it's still a very good and enjoyable read. Like any great series it's always good to read the books in order to fully appreciate the characters.
Buck Fever follows the daily life of game warden John Marlin starting off a week or so before hunting season commences. He gets a call over the radio that a deer has been shot with some weird developments and arrives to find the deer is actually someone he knows in a deer costume. He also sees his best friend's long time but recently lost to him companion Buck, a very agitated large male deer at gun point and immediately tries to convince the sheriff not to shoot him and to let him tranquilize Buck instead. The sheriff only has wall trophy on his mind but luckily a call from rich lobbyist Roy Swank whose ranch these incidents are on stops him as he values kickbacks and bribes from Swank a lot more than a new trophy. It soon becomes apparent Buck is a lot more valuable than just as a game animal when Swank hires local dim witted rednecks Red and Billy, who started this whole debacle in the first place, to get the animal back for ten grand. What follows is an hilarious tale, throw in a man locals believe to be Antonio Banderas who isn't too thrilled to be working with Texan amateurs and certainly isn't going to let anyone take his picture, some other Columbians, a veterinarian who likes to self subscribe and ignore the only for animals warning on the labels, red neck bar locals as well as other eccentric characters and you've got one entertaining read!
Deer, Murder and dumb rednecks.......2006-07-05
The book started off well with the humorous characters of Billy Dunn and Red O'Brien, but ended up being a little short on characters. Rehder does have the beginnings of some hillarious situations, and with work characters will probably become better in future novels. This one had a few situations that were forced, and dialogue that was far fetched. With time Rehder should be able to put out some good books... especially if Billy Dunn and Red O'Brien stick around.
poor.......2005-06-24
All hype. I see that a number a people have "shared" their thoughts on this book. The closest anyone's gotten to Hiaasen is Tim Dorsey and even his recent stuff hasn't been good.
I loved it.......2005-05-14
This is not haute literature - but it is funny and great fun to read. IMHO. I read his second book first, and liked it too. Just a great change of pace when you need something a little wacky.
The First Book in the Blanco County, Texas Series.......2005-03-02
Having been impressed by the comic genius in Flat Crazy, Mr. Rehder's latest book, I decided to go back to the beginning of the series to read this book. While Flat Crazy is clearly the better book, I found this book to be a rewarding story to read. The humor isn't quite so sharp and the story develops a little more ponderously, but Buck Fever clearly works. I suggest that you read Buck Fever in the firm knowledge that you have at least one better story ahead in the series.
This story will appeal most to those who like Elmore Leonard's books about goofy criminals. But don't expect the book to be an exact parallel to Leonard. In this book, the outrageous humor alternates with depictions of straight-edged evil.
If you like to read about deer hunting, you will enjoy this book much more than if you don't care for deer hunting.
The main appeal of the story is in learning about game warden, John Marlin, as he gets ready for his busiest few days of the year -- the opening of deer season. Naturally, the locals are all out poaching in advance of the event. The tension in the story comes from Marlin's desire to help his friend save a pet stag from the hunters. To do that, Marlin has to fight his way through complications involving a crooked former lobbyist, drug dealers, assorted local criminals, the ex-husband of a woman he sleeps with, a new love and a crooked sheriff.
The best sources of humor are Red O'Brien and Billy Don Craddock, two good old boys who like to drink, poach, party and avoid any honest labor. Several scenes involving them (including the book's opening) are the best writing in the book.
Blanco County has its share of original characters. Enjoy the loving sketches of them in this book. They remind me of people I knew when I was growing up in the West.
Book Description
Every fall close to one million hunters enter Pennsylvania’s forests and mountains in quest of the white-tailed deer. Some are seeking sport and companionship; others are stocking their larders for winter; many are conservationists who regard hunting as the most humane way of reducing overpopulated deer herds. They all face the increasing activism of animal rights advocates who are opposed to hunting in principle and who frequently picket and harass hunters.
This controversial subject is explored in depth by Mike Sajna, the outdoors columnist for Pittsburgh Magazine and a twenty-year veteran of Pennsylvania’s âpumpkin army,â the orange-clad throng that invades the woods every season. To explain the ethos and traditions of hunting he takes the reader to a typical deer camp in Warren County, in the rugged terrain of the Allegheny High Plateau. Starting with the trek north from their homes around Pittsburgh, he captures the sights and sounds, thoughts and feelings of three generations of hunters. With humor, affection, and insight he recounts the hunting lore, the camaraderie, the physical testing that make deer camp a unique experience.

Spot On.......2006-12-13
Having hunted deer for many years in Pa. not 10 miles from the site of this story, I found the late author's account to be completely a completely accurate of just what the "deer camp" experience is. From the excess of food brought to camp, the re-telling of the stories of past hunts to the darker side of camp life, the books rings true. My copy has been read and re-read each fall as the thoughts of camp begin to seep into my consciousness. A great read.
Deer Hunting Traditions waffles.......2001-10-11
I found this book to be very entertaining and well worth reading.
The book tells a story of a group of men deer hunting the first three days of PA deer season from a camp in Warren County. For the most part I like the story, however I feel the author spends too much time in the book trying to appease a non-hunting audience with his occasional questioning of why he is even deer hunting and the ethics of killing a deer. He truly represents a new rarer breed of modern, 60's educated deer hunter who is trying to justify and find meaning behind killing deer rather than accepting the established belief of our ancestors and a current majority of men in PA deer camps, that man has been given dominion over the animals by God and that they are there to be harvested yet respected without any guilt or questioning.
In this aspect I think Sanja fails to capture the predominant attitude in most PA deer camps and thus misses interpreting the hunt and deer camp from that perspective. Overall, a good book though and one that I would recommend.
Excellent writing.......2001-05-12
This slender book captures the essence of the annual trek north to deer camp - the rush to pack, convenience stores, cabins, car breakdowns, and finally the silent woods where time stands still. In camp, hunters share their experiences by the fire, twist the antenna to bring in the Steelers game on an old black and white tv. Although largely ignored by the rest of the world, a million deer hunters and 200 years of history surely qualify this ritual as an essential part of American culture and tradition.
Hunting is like a family reunion where you can chose your relatives. When someone is too old to come out, it is as if they've died. The trophies on the cabin walls are reminders of the hunter's mortality, not the deer's, because the deer remains long after the hunter's last visit. Hunters don't fear death, they fear the empty interval that will come after their last hunt.
Even natives of this area will be fascinated by the history and biology described here. This book could have spent a thousand pages explaining the importance of days in the woods watching, silent, meditating, being pelted by the weather and seeing the sun glide across the sky. But hunters already know these things. Many nonhunters will not "get it," but for hunters this book's simple description of everyday life in camp is powerfully evocative.
Great Book on PA Deer Hunting.......2000-03-20
What a delightful book for any deer hunter, but particularly for those who, like me have hunted in PA all their lives. I gave it to every member of our camp a few years back. The chapters alternate between a natural history of deer in PA and the story of one camp outside of Pttsbrg. I reccomend it very, very highly.
"An excellent book for Pennsylvania hunters of all ages".......1998-09-30
Buck Fever is a well written book about a local man and his memories of years of hunting in Penn's Woods. The book is easy to relate to, and stirs the memories of past hunting experiences. Living in the Pittsburgh area, I am able to enjoy his work for the Post-Gazette, but the book is unparalled by any of his other work. I highly recommend that you read the book, espically if you travel from the Pittsburgh area to hunt every fall.

A Humorous and Informative Book.......2003-08-10
This is a fantastic book! It is full of helpful information for the dedicated deer hunter, and it gives a true insight to deer hunting in south Georgia. Being a deer hunter myself for 45 years, this book made me relive many of my own hunting experiences. The author did not add or take away anything from the true-to-life hunting stories, making it some what humorous and very exciting. The section on hunting tips made me a beliver that the author knows his stuff and I can't wait to try some of the tips this deer season.

Warning - Waywards are not for the faint of heart. These characters are serial killers thruogh and through. You had better know your fellow players very well before introducing a Wayward into a gaming session not to mention having him as a full time player character. Very good book, but beware these guys are intense.

Got a stress case in your life? Of course you do: "Without question, many of us have mastered the neurotic art of spending much of our lives worrying about a variety of things all at once." Carlson's cheerful book aims to make us stop and smell--if not roses--whatever is sitting in front of our noses. Don't Sweat the Small Stuff... offers 100 meditations designed to make you appreciate being alive, keep your emotions (especially anger and dissatisfaction) in proper perspective, and cherish other people as the unique miracles they are. It's an owner's manual of the heart, and if you follow the directions, you will be a happier, more harmonious person. Like Stairmasters, oat bran, and other things that are good for you, the meditations take discipline. Even so, some of the strategies are kind of fun: "Imagine the people in your life as tiny infants and as 100-year-old adults." The trouble is, once you start, it's hard to stop.

Are you kidding me?.......2007-10-07
I can buy "don't sweat the small stuff," but when the author adds "it's all small stuff" he just lost all credibility. It's ALL small stuff? Tell that to a family whose loved one was just murdered. Or a parent who has to raise three severly deformed babies. That's the problem with self-help books of this genre, everything is penned into a nicely managed coral that totally ignores the REAL pains of life. If you want inspirational truth, check out the Bible where even Jesus, who never pulled any punches, tells us "life is difficult."
don,t sweat the small stuff its all small stuff.......2007-10-03
This book should be mandatory in high schools. It would help kids understand in simple ways how to response to emotional and spiritual and body. Very positive book for living the fast pace we live in today..I urge parents to get don,t sweat the small for teens..
Mystery Book.......2007-09-06
I never received the above mentioned book, and ONCE AGAIN very disatisfied with the used book service and will try another company. Granted there was a change of address and later a change in password because "review request" would not accept original password. Very UNSATISFIED wih service, and for $7.00 I would not waist anymore of my valuable time pursuing the mater....James A. Stapleton
PS. If I see the charge on my credit card I will dispute chatge.
Very helpful little book.......2007-09-04
Reading "Dont Sweat the Small Stuff" is a must for people like me who feel that they can't sit down and watch the news until he or she has run down a to-do list and checked off everything.
Putting life into its proper perspective.......2007-08-08
It has been my experience that life has a tendency to give us what we need (at the most unexpected times) when dealing and coping with problems in our lives. The other afternoon, for example, in my disorganized garage, was searching frantically for an old receipt for tax purposes. Now it really wasn't worth much, nevertheless, to me this tiny problem was all pressing and all stressing. In the scheme of things, it wasn't worth the energy. What I did find in one of the old boxes, though, was this terrific little book. Sitting down on a box amongst the dust, I read it for at least an hour and within that short span of time, it truly changed my perspective on what is really important to gain a more loving and stress-free existence.
Interestingly as a child my father's favourite saying was, "Don't sweat the details:" Meaning don't let little things get in the way of what is important. Richard Carlson's message is basically the same. In this treasure of a book, he has written 100 suggestions on how to deal with life's "small stuff", such as developing our patience, compassion, and our tendencies to criticise and make knee-jerk judgements; essentially developing our potential to become more caring and loving human beings.
My personal favourites:
Make Peace with Imperfection
Develop your compassion
Don't interrupt Others or Finish Their Sentences
Become a Better Listener
Become an Early Riser
Stop Blaming Others
Practice Random Acts of Kindness
There are 93 other suggestions in this book that if practiced could well change one's life for the better. But like all things truly valuable, it takes work, practice and discipline to achieve anything worthwhile on this planet.
I've decided to choose one suggestion a day and make a conscious effort to practice it; because I believe if followed will change life's vagaries and problems, at least putting them into a proper perspective.
Highly Recommended.

Nurturing and Uplifting.......2006-12-21
The "The Don't Sweat the Small Stull Workbook" is a wonderful workbook that is packed with wisdom and important advice on how you can avoid little irritations from spoiling your day and your life. The various exercises and tests have enabled me to learn a lot about myself and some of the trivial things that sometimes get me down. After going through the book, I have learnt to put things in perspective and discover that some of the things I used to take too seriously are not worth the waste of my nervous energy.
I am very grateful to Richard Carlson for giving me practical advice and insights into how I can live a happier and less stressful life. Among the things I learnt include being more patient, more compassionate, to be a good listener and being a friendlier person. I now practice random acts of kindness and this makes me feel very good inside. I am continually developing the skills of resisting the urge to criticise as I tend to be a perfectionist. I am now more relaxed when I drive to work in the traffic jam.
I strongly recommend reading the book "Don's Sweat the Small Stuff' as it will form a strong basis for helping readers put into practice the ideas in the workbook. The reader may also be interested in reading other complimentary books that can enrich your life and help you to overcome some of the constraint that prevent you from leading a full and pleasant life. These include the following (to name just two):
* Chicken Soup for the Soul series by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and others.
* The 2000 Percent Solution: Free Your Organisation from Stalled Thinking to Achieve Exponential Success by Donald Mitchell
All-in-all, a well presented workbook that is very helpful, nurturing in enriching to your life, strengthening your spirit and improve your outlook on life.

Customer Reviews:
the Budget Wedding Sourcebook.......2006-03-23
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. I will definitely keep it for reference material for years to come. I highly reccommend it for those trying to save money and have a beautiful wedding.
Not much here, except encouragement.......2005-10-28
I can't say I got many ideas from this book, but it did inspire me a bit. So many people tell you "wedddings are SO expensive" but this book tells you "yes, you can do it cheaper." I didn't actually use any of the ideas, most were pretty unoriginal. But it did a good job of keeping my spirits up, at those moments when I was feeling poor and pathetic while planning my wedding.
350 pages in length, 50 pages in content.......2004-01-09
I downloaded this book and read it in about 90 minutes. Its not poorly written, but I found it to be very low on substance. I would say I only found about 5 cost saving tips that weren't immediately obvious and I've seen those same tips on wedding websites. The 3 case studies of low budget weddings weren't relevant to what most couples (in the North East) would be experiencing. In my opinion, the author is using oddball cases to support the idea that her advice will save you money, when in fact the weddings referenced would have been frugal anyway.
Overall, I'm very disappointed in this book. I rate it better than a single star in that its not a bad reference book if you know nothing about weddings. However, all of this information could be found on the web with little or no effort.
A Sigh Of Relief!.......2003-02-15
I've never been married and I've never planned a wedding reception...let alone a reception for 150+ people! Faced with the task of planning my parent's 50th Wedding Anniversary, this book has been a great source of comfort for me with it's practical suggestions and "real-life" accounts of couples and their budgets. The book may have been published in March 2000, but its principles and examples still apply! What seemed like a daunting task at first is now an exciting and creative process! A great book for a great price!
Great Book!.......2001-01-23
I recently purchased this book and it has been a GREAT source of useful information. Madeline not only tells you ways to save money when planning, she gives her readers an idea of what you should really spend your money on and where you can afford to cut costs. There are also specific examples of how couples have planned their weddings on a budget of only $3000!! In addition to all of this information, Madeline stresses the importance of setting your "goals" for your wedding to determine what is most important to you and your fiancee' so that you can decide how you would like to spend the money in your budget. I would recommend this book to ANYONE who is planning a wedding.
