5 out of 5 stars A Pirate's Life for Me.......2007-10-11

As the lead animal trainer on all three of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, I found Michael Singer's account of our shared experience accurate, artistic, and exciting. So often, the perspective disseminated via the publicity machine shows an idealized view of the film making process. "Bring Me That Horizon" beautifully illuminates our journey - warts and all. I am especially appreciative of the special chapter on "Critical Critters"(pages 88 & 89). For a veteran of the "Pirates" wars, this book is like a photo album - slash - scrapbook I will cherish forever.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for POTC fans!!!.......2007-08-04

This book is very informative and so colorful! The pictures are incredible and it's very entertaining to read the actors' comments on their characters and the trilogy. I'm very glad that I invested the money! Any POTC fan who loves to read about the back stories behind the characters and the storyline will LOVE this!!! I highly recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes mith Jerry Bruckheimer from Pirates of the Caribbean.......2007-07-15

For every Pirates movie fan a must have. The Characters talking about things that happened during filming. You get to know them better by reading this, things that you never have read before in any other interview in magazines or on sites. Also very nice phatography by Jerry Bruckheimer. Pictures only published in this book. Whene you are reading this you get great respect for all those people who are working behind the scenes. Then you realise how huge the work is to build a set. You find very much information about how the movie comes to that what we see on the whitescreen. Enormous what a work is done to deliver these three movies for us to see. You read who created the final line "bring me that horizon" of the first movie.

5 out of 5 stars Bring Me That Horizon: the Making of Pirates of the Caribbean.......2007-07-13

This is a great book and well worth the cost. The history of the making of all three movies is very interesting and the pictures are great. I highly recommend this book for any fan of the Pirates trilogy.

Book Description

Ashley Montague is nearing the end of her police training -- but nothing has prepared this rookie for the rite of passage that will take her on a deadly ride into the underbelly of Miami's drug world.

It begins with the shocking discovery of a body on the highway and her glimpse of a mysterious hooded figure watching from the side of the road. Then Ashley's investigation into the incident reveals a surprising connection to another crime scene miles away.

In the heart of the Everglades, Detective Jake Dilessio stares at the mutilated body of a woman -- the killing identical to those carried out by a cult leader he put behind bars five years ago. Is this a copycat killing or is the wrong man doing time?

The last thing Ashley and Jake want or need is the electric pull of desire as they are dragged deeper into a dangerous world of corruption and conspiracy. Now, with time running out and their lives on the line, they have everything to fight for . . . and everything to lose.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2006-03-23

I could NOT put this book down - it was one of Ms. Graham's best books. The mystery was well played, and suspense non-stop and the paranoia enough to make you doubt your own mother. Top it off with well-written, well-rounded characters (even the background ones) and this is a book sure to please people looking for a good mystery, good suspense, and even those who want a bit of romance to spice things up (although it isn't overly obtrusive). This is the type of book that turned me on to Heather Graham to begin with, and the type I hope she continues to turn out in high numbers. Kudos!

2 out of 5 stars Tedious and run-of-the-mill.......2005-09-26

This book was a definite disappointment. I nearly didn't finish it because it is very tedious and the actual story doesn't feature enough in comparison to the highly constructed "love affair". In this book, all the typical elements of an average crime story are put together - man and woman feel attracted and repelled by each other, argue a bit and land in bed, woman hears scary footsteps, rooms are searched, there are some wrong leads and a showdown. Yawn.
If those standard elements would at least have been mixed into a good story, then it would have been okay, but unfortunately even that didn't work. The wrong leads seem just as constructed as the love affair and the explanations/solutions for the wrong leads are in many cases just plainly unbelievable. There are too many characters and so in turn the characters are not well developed.
More room is given to the characters' private lives and thoughts and not enough attention is paid to the crimes, which are supposed to be the subject of the book. Those get solved in a by-the-way manner and the solution is delivered in a most uninspired and unsatisfying manner. Much more could have been made out of this story idea.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great either.......2005-08-28

Picture me Dead started out strong, then fizzled off for a few chapters. The romance doesn't start until midway through and there is no flirting or lead in to the sex. The suspense picks up about 2/3 into the book and has you held in anticipation, but many of the red herrings get cleared too early and then it is obvious, at least it was for me who was left as the bad guy.
This would not be a book to read if you have to go visit someone at the hospital unless you enjoy the feeling of someone following you in the parking garage, and that shot of fear that goes with it.
Even though I do not think this is one of Heather Graham's best books, it was a quick read and did have some good suspense that held to the end. Despite my ability to solve the mystery part of it, the average reader who rarely does, will probably think the ending is shocking.
This really is more of a 3 and 1/2 stars, but since that wasn't an option I went for the 4 over lowering the score. It isn't a bad read, just not one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting read with twists and turns!.......2005-06-02

I enjoy Heather Graham's suspense novels. This book has great primary characters in Jake Dilessio, homicide detective, and Ashley Montague, police academy student, and some very, very suspicious acting secondary characters. The prologue is about what happened to Jake's partner 5 years ago but it keeps the suspense and mystery and we don't know any names!!

Ashley and her two friends, Jan and Karen, take off for Orlando for the weekend and on the way pass a very strange auto/pedestrian accident. The pedestrian is dressed in white briefs only. Ashley who is very observant due both to her rookie status and artistic abilities, notes a figure in black across the road. That weekend and when she gets back Ashley tries to find out more about the accident and discovers to her dismay that the pedestrian is Stuart, an old high school friend of hers. He is in a coma and not expected to recover. Ashley and Stuart's parents cannot believe he would take all the drugs found in his system.

Meanwhile, Jake is called to a scene at a canal where a young woman's badly decomposed body is found. Some of the MO is the same as a serial killer who killed some women 5 years ago but the serial killer is supposedly dead of suicide or if it is the charismatic former preacher "Papa Pierre", he has been in prison the last 5 years for some financial crimes. Jake is determined to find the killer from now and 5 years ago as he believes the same killer murdered his partner Nancy.

As Jake and Ashley meet, argue, fight and learn to work together and trust each other lust and romance explode.

The plots twists and turns and surprises are great!!

A hard-to-put-down read!!

4 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect!.......2005-05-27

I'm a new fan of Heather Graham and PICTURE ME DEAD is one of the reasons behind that. This had all of the classic pieces of a mystery/suspense with a few additions to liven the mix. It kept my attention from the very beginning until the end.

Ashley Montague, started out as a rookie cop and when her instructors at the academy saw her skill as an artist, she soon became a forensic artist. Ashley is young and trying to grab life by the horns. When she passes by a traffic accident she sees a man in a cloak but doesn't pay much attention. Afterwards she learns that the victim is a friend of hers and she doesn't believe what the authorities are saying about the things involving him. They consider him a junkie who couldn't stay out of traffic and she won't let it go. She sketches the scene from her own memory. It helps that she has a photographic memory... This picture haunts her because there is something there but she just can't put her finger on it.

Ashley meets Jake Dilessio, a detective who is cranky and a jerk at times. Several years earlier Jake lost his partner and he's sure Peter Bordon, a local cult leader, was the triggerman. When a new body appears in the Everglades, Jake begins wondering if Bordon had a partner (since he's in prison).

Added to this police business, is the fact that Ashley's uncle owns a bar and Jake keeps his boat in a slip near there. They literally run into each other, and sparks fly. At first they are sparks of annoyance, and later become sparks of a romantic nature.

Heather Graham leads the reader down a course that is anything but straight. With a list of possible villains, she narrows it down, only to have a few more facts tossed in to make you wonder if you have the right person in mind.

Character development is excellent as are the descriptions of Florida. The scenes are so vivid that you actually think you are part of the story.

PICTURE ME DEAD is a great suspense book and is at the top of my Favorites list. If you haven't read any Graham books, start with this one. It'll make you a fan too!

Drawing on the success of her first book, Creating Sacred Space with Feng Shui, Karen Kingston has met popular demand by expanding on the indispensable activity of clearing clutter. There is very little of actual Feng Shui here, and certainly nothing you can't get elsewhere, but the clutter problem gets full and complete treatment. Kingston reminds us that clutter is stuck energy that keeps you stuck in undesirable life patterns. Therefore, you can "sort out your life by sorting out your junk." Kingston covers the reasons we keep things as well as the amazing stories of people who have cleared their clutter away. More than just junk, clutter is all those things that have negative symbology and that collect stagnant energy. This latter can also apply to bodily, emotional, and spiritual clutter, all of which Kingston describes with characteristic passion. In an age of accumulation, it's good to see a book that frees up life again.

5 out of 5 stars Top 10 of my list. Helpful for anyone.......2007-10-06

This Book is one of the BEST for clearing clutter. I have tried to for years without much success until this book opened my eyes. It gave me understanding why I do some of the things I do. I started right away in clearing areas (getting rid of excess stuff). I got rid of 80% of my clothes and WOW what a change. I got rid of old sweatshirts ( 16 years old could hardly wear) that I had emotions attached to and soon after throwing them away I found Brand new ones for a great low price. Clutter does work on your subconscious in a negative way. Decluttering truly helped my whole family in many ways.

This is not a book for organizing your clutter, it is on taking the extra out of your life. It is so nice now to walk into an area that I have worked on and feel at peace. My mother started with the advise from this book and my father commented to her "what ever your doing keep it up". He didn't know how to explain it but he was feeling better with her getting rid of extra pictures of someone they were having problems with.

The Feng Shui part is very basic. For others I have shared this book with and myself agree that this book is the way to start with Feng Shui. It is very hard to see results with Feng Shui when the clutter is in the way. If you don't understand Feng Shui this book still helps you with the basics.

            ENJOY

This is a terrific book for people who need to be motivated to clear their clutter! Clutter removal is essential to rid your home or office of unwanted negative, stagnate energies. I'm a huge proponent of clearing clutter (and organizing the rest.)

Once your home or office is free from clutter, the next step--creating a sanctuary in your home and manifesting your desires--is easy.

So, if you overwhelmed with clutter, allow Karen to guide you!

This is a book I was waiting for for years. To bring the art and spirituality of Feng Shui together with clearing your clutter and the emotional baggage that goes with it, is a phenominal task and was done beautifully and succinctly by the author. I read it in practically one gulp and immediately set about to clear our years of clutter. Of course, I was planning this maneuver in my head for a long time before I found this perfect instruction kit. It is true what the author conveys: clearing clutter not only clears your spaces, but frees your spirit as well. You will not be sorry you bought this lovely little book.

Indian cooks know how to infuse vegetables, legumes, and grain dishes with appealing, intense flavors. That's one reason Indian cooking is attractive when you want to emphasize these foods in your daily diet; however, unfamiliar ingredients and cooking techniques, too much fat and dairy, and time-consuming preparation can be drawbacks to preparing these dishes. Madhu Gadia, a registered dietician, addresses these issues in Lite and Luscious Cuisine of India.

Gadia's self-published book begins with a lesson in basic nutrition, and includes a nutritional breakdown for all 100-plus recipes. To help make Indian cooking more accessible, Gadia suggests when you can reduce preparation time by using frozen vegetables, and recommends ways to prepare and freeze key ingredients so that they will be on hand when you want them. You will recognize many dishes from restaurant menus, including Lamb Seekh Kebab and Chicken Khorma. Most interesting are the good selection of dals, rice, and vegetable dishes, all made using less fat than usual. To eliminate the stumbling block of getting the required ingredients for making many Indian dishes, the book includes an offer for ordering two kits, one that contains all the spices and seasoning blends called for in the book, and one that contains enough of the 15 beans and legumes used to make at least one recipe calling for each.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect! Easy, accessible, inspiring, fun, DELICIOUS!.......2007-08-20

I'm relatively new to Indian food. Fortunately I live in Chicago where I have access to so many great restaurants. But I can't eat out all the time. I try to eat healthy but that leads to pretty bland meals. I am so happy to see Madhu has my same focus on healthy eating. All the flavor comes from the spices. I almost never cook with spices but this book is changing me forever. If you are new to Indian cooking too, you will need to spend about $30 on spices (and I shopped at Whole Foods so you can probably find them cheaper elsewhere). But I was glad to pay it after I made my first meal. I swear, just like at a restaurants. I made curry chicken, naan, green beans, and rice pudding. I love how she lists each recipe by an English name and the Indian name. That is really the best part of the book, it's so accessible to someone who is not too familiar with Indian language or ingredients. I really love her concise but vibrant introductory sections. It really got me more excited to run out to the store and get what I needed to begin cooking. It's only like 8-10 spices that you use over and over in all different combinations in the recipes. And a little bottle of each will go a long way. The rest of the ingredients as so basic: chicken, onions, tomatoes, flour, vegetable oil. Yes the recipes are generally for 6 people (it's just my husband and I) but so many of the entrees are great to make in large quantities to have for a couple meals. One other great thing is that she indicates where the hot spice is optional. My husband and I had a great time cooking our first Indian meal and my mom is coming over next weekend to do the same. Thanks for such a great book Madhu!

5 out of 5 stars Great taste w/out the extra calories.......2007-05-14

New Indian Home Cooking is a winner!!! Have prepared at least half of the recipes and there is not a bad one in the bunch. I was fortunate enough to take a cooking class from Madhu Gadia - well after I had purchased her book - and she was delightful. Once you purchase the spices, which are very inexpensive, you are in business. Cannot go wrong with this purchase!!

5 out of 5 stars Two Excellent Cookbooks in a Row.......2006-11-19

Ms. Gadia tells in clear, simple terms how to cook authentic tasting recipes that are low-fat to boot.

3 out of 5 stars good for the health-conscious.......2006-07-25

I probably wouldn't have bought this book if it had still been under its hardcover title "Lite and Luscious Indian Cuisine" (or something like that). I am suspicious of overtly health-conscious food (and cutesy misspelling), although Indian food tends to work pretty well even when low fat. It is pretty easy to adjust these recipes, though, by using full-fat yogurt, ghee, etc.

The strength of this book is that it provides many non-main course recipes, such as snacks, breads, drinks, etc. This is home cooking, not restaurant cooking.

There are a few drawbacks. The book barely has 100 recipes, so if you buy a big bag of toor dal, there are only a few things you can do with it. I would have preferred more recipes and less advice on healthy eating (but others may disagree). While the recipes are generally easy to make, this isn't a book that does much hand-holding. Other cookbooks provide step-by-step instructions; this does not. A few times I've wondered whether my dish was supposed to come out a certain way, but there are no pictures.

Some of the recipes worked for me, but some seem under-spiced.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for big families, not great for singles.......2006-07-23

I purchased this book because of the rave reviews and I do like it. I liked reading about the history of Indian cooking, even though 55 pages seemed a bit much.

The only negative is that I am cooking for myself, and all the recepies seem layed out for big families. Three pounds of chicken? I would have to eat the same thing for a month! If I was a more experienced Indian cook, maybe I could figure out how to reduce the amount, but as a beginner I like to stick to the recipe at the beginning.

If you are single, buy a book that maybe cooks for smaller portions, not to serve 6.

                Book Description

In Indian Home Cooking, Suvir Saran introduced our taste buds, and our kitchens, to the wonders of cumin, coriander, cardamom, and curry leaves. American Masala takes the next step, marrying Indian flavors with American favorites to create dishes that are exotic, yet familiar; full of complex tastes, yet easy enough for weeknight suppers. Masala—the Hindi word for a blend of spices—is at the heart of Indian cooking. Whether toasted, ground, fried, infused in oil, or fresh, spices are used to layer flavors in simple but profound ways. Bring the same techniques to American classics such as meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, or roasted turkey, and the result is something truly special. Masala also refers to the excitement and vibrancy that come from a house full of friends and family. Simple recipes prepared with staples found in every supermarket mean less time laboring in the kitchen and more time spent enjoying the spice of life.

From snacks and starters and on to the evening meal, the Indian influence brightens the flavors in dishes like:

                - Goat Cheese Pesto–Stuffed Chicken Breasts
                - Tamarind-Glazed Turkey with Corn Bread–JalapeñoStuffing
                - Crab-and-Salmon Cakes with Spicy Cilantro Aïoli
                - Crispy Okra Salad
                - Bombay-Style Whole Snapper
                - Honey-Glazed Double-Thick Pork Chops
                - Pistachio-and-Cardamom Pound Cake with Lemon Icing
                - Fried Eggs with Asparagus and Prosciutto

American Masala isn’t about traditional Indian food—it’s about adding new flavors to the great American melting pot, using spices to liven up the old standbys, and enjoying dishes that are as exciting and diverse as life in the big city, and yet as familiar and comforting as your mother’s cooking.

5 out of 5 stars Another Winning Book from Suvir Saran.......2007-10-06

I picked up my copy of "American Masala" last night so this review is a first impressions sort of look at chef Suvir Saran's latest cookbook. First of all, the photography and the graphic elements that make up this book are vividly colorful. As you can see from the cover, the colors are rich and intense - almost a visual foretaste of the equally vivid flavors and unique layering of spices you will experience when you try these recipes. Building on "Indian Home Cooking," this second book provides even more background to the recipes - the stories of people and experiences that have inspired Saran's collection of "125 new classics" are a pure pleasure to read. In fact, when I got home last night, I sat in bed reading Saran's book as I would a novel, getting lost in the textures and rhythms of anecdotes from Delhi, New York and other places around the world.

Today I decided to try Suvir's recipe for vegetarian enchiladas with roasted pepper sauce. As I looked through the recipe to make my shopping list, I discovered that I would be actually making three recipies: the roasted pepper sauce, the stir-fried carrot salad, and the enchiladas themselves. Now enchiladas, like many of the foods you will see in this cookbook, may seem a peculiar offering from one of the leading authorities in this country on Indian cooking. But as the title suggests, this book reflects Saran's own experience in America (where, as he states early on, he has lived almost as long as he had lived in India). Many of these recipes will no doubt seem familiar to you as you thumb through the book, but if you look at the ingredients, you will notice how Suvir subtly recreates them with new flavors and spices.

I have just finished making the roasted pepper sauce (fantastic!), the carrot salad (deeply warm and spicy with a lovely tang of lime) and have assembled the enchiladas. I'll be putting them in the oven in a few minutes and cannot wait to try them.

Get this book, it's a wonderful reflection of a gifted chef.
