Book Description
Vanessa March never thought to look for her missing husband in Vienna -- until she saw him in a newsreel shot there at the scene of a deadly fire. But her hunt for answers only leads to more sinister questions in a mysterious world of beautiful horses.
And what waits for Vanessa in the shadows is more terrifying than anything she has ever encountered.
Customer Reviews:
not Stewart's best, but not bad either.......2006-08-19
Airs Above the Ground is not quite as compelling in its descriptions and plot as The Gabriel Hounds, My Brother Michael, or This Rough Magic (my favourite); however, it is still a classic Stewart mystery/romance, even if the romance is quite evident from the start. Vanessa March is quite likable and the only Stewart heroine thus far to not have annoyed me just a little bit. My favourite element of the book is the friendship that develops between Vanessa and young Tim Lacy, who is trying to break away from a stifling household and forge a path for himself. As far as the descriptions of exotic locales go, trademark to Stewart, I enjoyed the chase scene through the castle. Airs Above the Ground didn't wow me and I found the ending a bit strange as it didn't feature Annalisa at all..., but all in all, a pleasent read.
What A Film it would Make!.......2006-04-05
This is the kind of book I can imagine lots of people being sniffy about, cheesily packaged and unashamedly romantic - probably a lot wouldn't even pick it up in the first place. Well that's their loss, but I'd like to get a read-mary-stewart campaign off the ground. She is so good: a deft and clever writer who wears her literary nounce lightly. I adore her stories, her settings and her feisty (but not too feisty!) heroines. No one else is as consistently good: let's hear it for romantic fiction! I've been chastised on the bookwormonthenet blog for offering qualified praise to writers like Mary Stewart and for using phrases like 'pulp fiction' - but no, it is no slur. These are stunning books by a vastly talented writer. I also think film producers ought to be trawling the stewart back catalogue: I can just see Cate Blanchett as the heroine of Airs Above the Ground and the whole sub-plot around the Austrian circus, spies and a lost Lipizzaner stallion would translate fabulously to the wide screen. Go on, someone, do it!
She Paints Pictures.......2003-11-08
I have loved every novel written by Mary Stewart, some more than others. I read this one well over twenty years ago and many times since then. It is one of my many favorite of her books. In her books you get to travel; you feel as if you are really there. I have wanted to visit almost every place I have visited in her books. I too had pledged to see the Lippizaner stallions someday & I finally got to see them a few years ago. They were wonderful of course. There is magic in all the Mary Stewart books; the relationships in this one in particular were warm and appealing.
Great Mixture of Exotic Locale, Suspense and Magic.......2003-10-28
With a backdrop of a fairy-tale castle set in the Austrian alps and the music of Der Rosenkavalier playing below from a traveling circus, an old horse dances in a meadow, executing the precise dressage movements called the "Airs Above the Ground" of the famous Lippanzaners of the Spanish Riding School. The only witnesses are Londoners, Vanessa March, and her companion teenaged Tim Lacy thrown together by chance as Tim pursues his dream of untying his mother's apron strings by applying for a job at the famous riding school and Vanessa searches for her errant husband, Lewis, supposedly away on business in Sweden, but documented on a UK newsreel with a beautiful blonde during an out of control circus fire near Graz.
As usual, Mary Stewart creates a fine story where intrepid characters move along a lushly described exotic locale. The delineation between good and evil is clearly defined. Like the other Stewart heroines, Charity Selbourne of 'Madame Will You Talk' comes quickly to mind, Vanessa unhesitatingly does the 'right thing.' Although she has the stereotypical loveliness, intelligence, and quick wittedness with a bit of the acerbic tongue of a married woman that makes her narration marvelously fun, she is never obssessed with superficiality like so many more modern 'romance' heroines. But, of course, a Stewart romance is a romance of the most highly literal type; the love scenes are suggested rather than depicted. The narration moves you along as if you were one and the same as the heroine; you breath her air, your heart clenches with terror when hers does, your skin prickles when in the presence of the ethereal and you quickly adopt and share her high value system. Above all the atmosphere of magic liberally sprinkling the air is maintained throughout so that even the most coincidental and improbable happenings seem to gel and fit with a puzzler's adept precision. When the tale draws to an end, you sigh with disappointment at turning that last page and you wish that Stewart had written three times as many novels so you had more to rediscover.
I listened to the audio presentation of this novel read by Jane Asher; it is very well-done, well worth the investment to listen to over and over again and see that poignant image of the horse dancing alone in the meadow just one more time in your mind's eye. Fantastic!
You can get an education from Mary Stewart.......2002-12-20
Mary Stewart's Ivy Tree got me hooked on reading and I've read every book she's written. The villain in this book is so memorable I have always remembered his name. This book like all of her books marries romance and mystery but in a way no modern books do, it is romance, not sex. All of her books give you information on either classic works or other historic backgrounds, like the Spanish Riding School, that I got big points from my Humanities teachers from things I learned from Mary Stewart, I never told them how I knew the information. This is one of her best, the people are memorable and the horse is miraculous. Just a treat all round. Read all her mysteries you can't go wrong

Above Average.......2001-10-05
Ms. Goldstrand tells an engaging story about the inner workings of FAA located in the Rocky Mountain region. It is very true to life and takes us to the Hill country of Texas, Kaui and the front range of Colorado. A Coloradan myself, I found her descriptions realistic and accurate. A frequent traveler, I was amazed at what goes on "behind the scenes" in an FAA facility. She is a great story teller with engaging dialogue and believable characters. Above Ground Level is a must read for the romance follower. I loved the main characters.

Mage Heart's narrator is a young woman taught magery in a patriarchal culture which (of course) doesn't permit women to be mages. Routley's fantasy-Renaissance-and-magery plot questions our expectations of romance and fantasy stereotypes, and her portrayals of Dorian and the people around her---friend and foe alike---have more depth than many established writers'. The center of the story is Dorian's inner struggle to reconcile her experiences and her training, and the unified resolution of the action and Dorian's conflicts is satisfying. Like all first novels, this standalone has rough spots, but they're forgivable in such a good story.
Book Description
Provincial and naive -- and the most powerful mage in the realm --young Dion is an innocent adrift in a world of intrigues and treacheries, with foul, hungry demons lurking just beyond its borders. And now she has been called upon to serve her Duke's favorite mistress: the extraordinary Kitten Avignon, Our Lady of Roses.
For the mesmerizing courtesan is a woman in dire jeopardy, stalked by a fearsome necromancer who will not sleep until his beautiful prey suffers horribly and is destroyed. And with Evil's night approaching, shielding the Lady and herself from harm will require every ounce of a power Dion is only beginning to recognize and fear -- a great gift suddenly imperiled by blossoming womanhood...and dangerous desire.
Customer Reviews:
A slow starter, but ok dark fantasy in the end.......2006-08-21
"Mage Heart" is really a simple little fantasy (the first written by author Jane Routley who later changed her name to Rebecca Locksley and published "The Three Sisters" which takes place earlier in the same world) that seems quite complex because of the amount of information packed into it. All of this is quite dark also, which added an extra creepy atmosphere to the book.I should say this is fairly dark fantasy, and it's well written enough to be creepy, so now you're warned. I had some disturbing, dark, confusing dreams while reading this. What this book really is is a story about the only female mage around coming to maturity while protecting a high ranking courtesan from a necromancer-and it is just stuffed with the history of the world it takes place in.
This is kind of cool because you learn all sorts of things that come into play later (making re-reading certain passages for clarity a must) but it makes parts of the book boring. I wasn't really sure if I liked this book at all until the last 50 pages, which were packed with adrenalin. The ending was good stuff and a bit unexpected after the treading water pace of the rest of the book.
In the end, three stars, and I will read the next, though if I had not already purchased it I might not have made the effort to track the out of print "Fire angels" down.
Mesmerizing Dark Fantasy!.......2003-01-25
Dion was just an ordinary young girl when she came to the attention of Michael, a great mage. Michael bought her from her mother to see if it was possible to train a female to be a mage. Michael completely takes over Dion's life as she has no other friends or teachers. When Dion is older, she cannot really remember a life before Michael. She knows that she has often been a disappointment to him and fears what will become of her now that Michael is dead. There is no place for a female mage in Gallia and Dion doesn't really have any training as a healer, the only acceptable role for a female with magicial powers. So it is a relief to the Dean of the School of Magic when the Duke calls on her to protect his favorite mistress, Kitten Avignon, from a necromancer with a grudge.
Dion tries to refuse, terrified that she will lose all that is left to her now - her unsullied reputation. After all, how can she be seen to consort with the women of the "honey sisterhood" and not be thought a courtesan herself? However, when the necromancer sends an assassin into the College of Magics to kill Dion, she has no choice but to move in with Kitten and accept the physical protection that that will provide her. Dion is ill prepared for the world of political intrigue in which she finds herself and struggles to fit Kitten's view of the world and Michael's view together. But Dion has a bigger problem, she has somehow called a Demon to her and the Demon will do anything to cross over into Dion's world where innocent prey abounds. Dion both fears and desires the demon's power, but she knows that to use demon magic is the worst kind of necromancy. Matters are further complicated when she meets the mesmerizing Andre Gregorov, a sophisticated foreigner who claims to be passionately in love with her. But who is he really and why does he want her? Dion soon discovers that nothing and no one is what it appears. Can she have the confidence in herself to make the right choices and to use her great magical gift to protect those most important to her?
I thought that the book started off a little slow, but once Dion moved into Kitten's house, the plot seemed to move along faster. Also, I really enjoyed the romance/attraction between Dion and Andre and wish that that had been introduced sooner in the book, but I understand that Dion's character needed to be developed to a certain point before Andre could be introduced. The plot was quite original and the world that Jane Routley introduces the reader to was simply stunning in its realistic details. Politics, art, religion, all intertwine in the complicated relationships that we see in our own world today. Nothing is simple and nothing is easy in this world and everything becomes a shade of gray instead of the black and white that Dion is looking for. A very entertaining read - highly recommended for all who love fantasy!
Cant wait to read Routley's other books!! : ).......2001-05-23
I've bought Mage Heart only 2 days ago and promised myself that I would take my time reading(i'm the kind of person who stays up past midnight to finish reading a book)... well, i failed.. Mage Heart was too good to put down! Dion(the main character) is a very interesting person once u get to know her. She's the type of person who wants respect from society-she's no rebel-but still has mixed feelings about what to do (and no, its not peer pressure). to sum it all up-its a perfect book for anyone [over 13] who loves romance..but dont worry, there's a lot of sci-fi involved in it too.. ; )
I could not put it down.......2000-12-29
This is a fantastic fantasy masterpiece that explores the areas of love, trust and magic! The characters are so real that they practically leap out at you and everything's so vividly described. This is one of the best books I've ever read and I can't wait to read the rest of the series, Fire Angels and Aramaya.
Romance and suspense!.......2000-08-06
This book is filled with romance when Dion meets the beautiful Andre. Dion can't make up her mind about this gorgeous hunk but others would be delighted to take her place. Suspense filled to see what happens at the end. This book was a great read and filled with one surprise after another! People who like mysterious circumstances and/or romance will find this book worthwhile, I think.

Customer Reviews:
A Must if you were sexually abused.......2007-07-26
This book is a true gift - to me and to anyone that was abused in any way, not just sexually.
A workbook for a journey.......2007-01-19
This workbook is paperback and has lots of room for notes and comments. Well construsted and felxable for use as a workbook. For any survivor this is a very needful journey. This book and its author has gathered the tools that many have but don't know how to use and helps us understand what to do and how to do it. I have greatly benefitted from this. It is a book well recieved by my therapist. For all survivors and their partners and families this is a book that gives hope, understanding and reassurance. Well worth it.
Workbook is my Guide to Healing.......2006-07-01
Just as The Courage to Heal was my Bible in helping me get through the crisis stage of sexual abuse revisited, helping me to decipher what it was I was feeling, and that it was perfectly normal, probably more normal than anything in my life ever had been, and letting me know what I may be going through next, and how people might react to me, ect.....This Courage to Heal Workbook is my homework in learning to become the person I should have started out as. I do a chapter a day, but you can do it a chapter a week, or at your own pace. Pre-reading The Courage to Heal is not necessary, either. It's all self-explanatory. Encourages one to give lots of deep thought to differing topics and to answer honestly and in depth. I strongly recommend this workbook to anyone struggling to heal the wounds of childhood sexual abuse. It allows you to get to know the real you inside all of the protective layers that have been unconsciencously piled on over the years....not who you want people to know, but who you really are, and who you were really meant to be. A bright shining star!
This book is hard work but good.......2006-06-01
I am not sure why people whose lives are being "ruined" or hurt by "unfounded" repressed memories are being so hard on the authors of this book. Sounds like the psychiatric professionals that their loved one or they themselves are seeing need to be held to task for the "bringing forth the memories" problem - not the authors of this book.
I WAS sexually abused by my father and stepbrother and remember every last memory that was made over a span of 7 years. Courage to Heal HAS helped me with it and has helped me work on the issues that I thought confrontation of my abusers would heal immediately. Yea right.
I don't think anyone should use this book without the consultations of a counselor or therapist and getting help from them while going through it. Self diagnosis is and can be dangerous. I think, however, it is a good book to help a person work through the issues that surround actual abuses.
Be your own therapist.......2006-03-20
It is a great compliment to the textbook 'Courage to Heal'. As much as we trust (or should trust) our therapists, some things will always be left unsaid. Allow this book to fill in the gaps. When I write about what upsets me, I feel somewhat relieved. This is a difficult book to work with, it will change your world forever, and it will change for the better. Once you get to the point of no return, hopefully, like me, you will feel that something inside of you just let go. It is OK to be angry, it is OK to cry, it is OK to fight back. Remember: long after your abuser is out of your life, he or she still controls you through the memories. This book guides you through all the hard work you have to do to control those memories and have a happy life.
Book Description
Fire up the grill and get ready to mambo! Tired of the same ol' marinades and barbecue sauces? Well, Nuevo Latino king Douglas Rodriguez and sous chef Andrew DiCataldo have the recipes that grillmeisters need to spice things up and expand their repertoire. Drawing on spices, authentic dishes, and grilling techniques from over 20 Latin American countries, Rodriguez and DiCataldo share the secrets of these dynamic cuisines. True to Rodriguez's reputation for inventive Latin fusion food, these 100-plus recipes deliver exotic, seductive flavors, all married by the intense heat of the grill. Recipes range from seafood, meat, game, and poultry entrées to desserts and drinks (after all, tending the grill is so much more fun with a tropical drink in hand!).
Customer Reviews:
This book is fun.......2005-10-22
The recipes are well-written, easy to follow and photographed beautifully. I love the comments the author provides at the begining of each recipe.
GREAT grilling book.......2005-06-08
The Buena Vista Cocktails, Mole-rub Turkey Tenderloin and Chocolate Pound Cake are all excellent. This book is well-designed and beautifully presented. I have also made extensive use of Rodriguez's ceviche book. Can't go wrong with either of these. The more exotic ingredients are worth the search. Happy eating.
Sophisticated, complex flavors.......2001-07-16
New York chef Douglas Rodriguez, known for his bold flavors and flashy, sophisticated approach to Latin cuisine, turns his attention to grilling in this beautifully illustrated, oversize book, full-page photos accompanying many recipes, from the Bacardi Cocktail to the Passion Fruit Trifle.
The backyard hamburger gets a makeover with ground pork and chile, cumin and coriander; boneless beef short ribs are served with an opal basil chimichurri; mango barbecue sauce perks up frogs' legs or grilled pork.
Most of the recipes call for some preparation time in the form of sauces, marinades or relishes. Mussels in Banana Leaves, for instance, requires a saffron reduction to be added to a softened butter, the banana leaves to be cut in a rectangle, dotted with saffron butter and thyme before being folded around the mussels, the packages then wrapped in foil and grilled. Follow this with Grilled Lobster with Coconut-Ginger Mojo or a classical Paella and you may be too tired to eat.
Simpler recipes abound though - Cornish Game Hen with Honey Mustard Garlic Cilantro Glaze is marinated in the glaze a day ahead; Ham Steak with Grilled Pineapple Tomatillo Salsa, Shrimp with Avocado Horseradish Salsa, Salmon with Dill Chimichurri.
Among the sides are a Spicy Radish Slaw, Yucca Hash Browns, Grilled Hearts of Palm and Cherry Tomato Salad. Breads include arepas, flatbreads and cornmeal biscuits and desserts, while not grilled, go well with the spicy fare: Cool Spiced Flan, Espresso Cream. Rodriguez also includes grill basics - adobos, glazes and vinaigrettes.
A book for the cook who wants to dazzle.
Tried four recipes this weekend and they all got RAVES!.......2001-04-09
I gave this cookbook a workout this weekend. I tried two appetizers -- cheese dip and grilled pork. This started the meal off right, as my guests cleaned-up every bit.
We moved on to the honey-mustard, fried-plantain crusted lamb, which is an incredible taste combination. (I complemented this with a corn recipe from another cookbook.)
The meal ended with the best chocolate dessert EVER: Chocolate Pound Cake. At one point, one of my friends exclaimed, "I'm not eating another bite because I just reached heaven." My husband and I have been fighting over the remains.
THUMBS UP for Mr. Rodriquez!
P.S. I have a leg of lamb from this book marinating in the frig now. It smells incredible.
WOW!!! Nuevo Latino for the grill........2000-10-05
The perfect compliment to Douglas Rodriguez's "Nuevo Latino" book. This new book reintroduces us to the latin style of cooking present by Mr. Rodriguez, through the use of the ever popular grill. A must for those of us who enjoy and love grilling, smoking and outdoors cooking. The book provides an good introduction to the style and background to the cooking style. Each of the recipes, from beverages and appetizers to seafoods and meat main dishes to deserts and sauces, is preceded by a short but highly interesting description of the dish and some of its ingredients. The instruction are simple and easy to follow although some are very time consuming and need a great deal of preparetion.
Latin Flavors on the Grill is stunningly presented as a hard cover book, the pictures and descriptions are mouth-watering.
