Penzler Pick, August 2000: Val McDermid, better known in England than in the U.S., is a well respected writer of crime fiction. Her three ongoing mystery series feature red-haired PI Kate Brannigan; Lindsay Gordon, a lesbian socialist journalist, and Tony Hill and Carol Jordan, clinical psychologist and detective inspector respectively. A Place of Execution is McDermid's first stand-alone mystery, and with it, she redefines the term "village mystery."
It is 1963, the Beatles are becoming wildly popular in England, and the Swinging Sixties are about to change the post-war Western world. But in the village of Scardale in the Peaks District of Derbyshire, a desolate area beloved of hikers and climbers, nothing has changed for hundreds of years. The village has remained small and insular--most villagers are related, and the most common second names are Carter and Lomas. When Alison Carter, aged 13, disappears while walking her dog, the case is given to a young detective inspector named George Bennett. As Bennett gets to know the families in the village and their concerns, he realizes that this case is not as simple as it first seems. The villagers seem to be closing ranks, and Bennett suspects they may be protecting one of their own. Central to his investigation are Alison's mother and her husband. When Ruth Carter remarried, she chose Philip Hawkin, an outsider who is now the current squire of the village. As Alison's stepfather, he raises all kinds of red flags for Bennett. But so does Alison's close relationship with her cousin Charlie who, too conveniently, it seems, finds a vital clue.
All this is complicated by the fact that the police and the villagers cannot find Alison's body; there are also other disappearances in the area which may or may not be connected. To reveal more about this riveting mystery would be to give too much away. McDermid takes the reader through a maze of conflicting facts and theories, and when Bennett, with the help of local police, solves the case, the real story is only just beginning--especially for Bennett, who will question not only his own part in solving this case, but ultimately the profession he has chosen. --Otto Penzler
Book Description
Winter 1963: two children have disappeared off the streets of Manchester; the murderous careers of Myra Hindley and Ian Brady have begun. On a freezlng day in December, another child goes missing: thirteen-year-old Alison Carter vanishes from her town, an insular community that distrusts the outside world. For the young George Bennett, a newly promoted inspector, it is the beginning of his most difficult and harrowing case: a murder with no body, an investigation with more dead ends and closed faces than he'd have found in the anonymity of the inner city, and an outcome which reverberates through the years.
Decades later he finally tells his story to journalist Catherine Heathcote, but just when the book is poised for publication, Bennett unaccountably tries to pull the plug. He has new information which he refuses to divulge, new information that threatens the very foundations of his existence. Catherine is forced to re-investigate the past, with results that turn the world upside down.
A Greek tragedy in modern England, A Place of Execution is a taut psychological thriller that explores, exposes and explodes the border between reality and illusion in a multi-layered narrative that turns expectations on their head and reminds us that what we know is what we do not know.

A Place of Execution.......2007-05-07
This one was so well written that I was certain that it was a true story and, truth being stranger than fiction, had me captivated. I bought it on CD audio and had a hard time turning it off. This is the first Val McDermid book I have read, but as soon as I finished it I ordered all of the others. A fantastic writer and I can only hope the other books live up to the quality of this one.
Well-executed mystery.......2007-03-12
A Place of Execution is an exceptionally well crafted mystery. The setting is a remote English village where a beautiful 13 year old girl has gone missing. George Bennett, the detective in charge of the investigation, is detrmined to find her and later, when it appears she has been murdered, equally determined to bring her killer to justice. The ultimate resolution is believable, satisfying, and haunting. Highly recommended.
What a delicious find!.......2006-11-28
Several years ago I came across a book that told the story of a murder in a very remote area where are the people were related and clannish. I loaned the book to a friend and never saw it again. I could not remember the title.
Now, being a fan of Val McDermind, it was one more piece of her books that I wanted to read. Imagine my surprise when I discovered this was the exact book I had read earlier and couldn't find again. It felt like Christmas.
This is a keeper. I can re-read this book and not tire of it.
good thriller/chiller however there are contrivances.......2006-11-10
It was a good read, well written and the story lines do generate some excitement. However, some events felt forced - some plotting contrivances took one star away. Another star was dropped due to not a lot of excitement in the reading.
A Place of Execution.......2006-11-04
Exceptionally good. I loved it so much I bought the whole DVD series.

An excellent Ozzy quest story.......2003-02-01
There are two aspects to this book that often cause consternation and debate in the Oz community. The first is that a talking goose is about to be cooked and eaten (although he is saved from this fate). The other occurs at the end, so I don't want to give it away, but let's just say it involves a punishment that many people consider unduly harsh and unnecessary. Aside from these things, though, it's hard to say anything against this book (although there is a character with the unfortunate name of "Humpy"). It is a well-written quest story, with the object of the quest being Ozma's long-lost father. The book includes visits to many exotic Ozian locales, and involves several interesting characters. Kabumpo makes an appearance, and Mombi reappears as a villain. Although she no longer has any real magical power, she still has plenty of tricks up her sleeve, mostly involving enhanced cooking ingredients. This is one of Thompson's best books, and makes for a very enjoyable read.
Oz never grows old.......2003-01-20
I liked this book a lot. Like all Oz books, it gets to be ridiculous at times, but still a lot of fun to read. I think this book was written better than many others that Ruth had done earlier. It tended to be less absurdity, and more geared to the telling of a good Oz story. It didn't have an ending where something really weird occurred to make everything all right. I enjoyed it a lot. It is a childs book, and that fact should not be forgotten, but it is a book to make everyone feel good when they are done reading it. I personally loved it.
I love Oz!.......2000-03-25
This book is very, VERY, good. I am a big fan of all Oz books, and this is definitely better than some. Only drawback is that the original Jno. R. Neill cover completely gives the ending away.

Guaranteed to help parents reclaim sweet dreams for their entire family
New from the bestselling author of the classic baby sleep guide!
Getting babies to sleep through the night is one thing; getting willful toddlers and energetic preschoolers to sleep is another problem altogether. Written to help sleep-deprived parents of children ages one to five, The No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers offers loving solutions to help this active age-group get the rest they--and their parents--so desperately need.
A follow-up to Elizabeth Pantley's megahit The No-Cry Sleep Solution, this breakthrough guide is written in Pantley's trademark gentle, child-centered style. Parents will discover a wellspring of positive approaches to help their children get to bed, stay in bed, and sleep all night, without having to resort to punishments or other negative and ineffective measures. The No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers tackles many common nighttime obstacles, including:
- Refusals to go to bed
- Night waking and early rising
- Reluctance to move out of the crib and into a big-kid bed
- Nighttime visits to the parents' bed
- Naptime problems
- Nightmares, "night terrors," and fears
- Special sleep issues of twins, special needs children, and adopted children
- Sleepwalking, sleep talking, snoring, and tooth grinding
Customer Reviews:
Consistency is the key.......2007-07-31
I think when any parent picks up a book like this, the situation is already out of control or at least something that needs tweaked. I found myself with a newborn baby and a 2 yr old that a couple months before moved from our bed to her own "big girl bed". Little by little my little girl found her way back into our bed. There was no room for me, my husband, a newborn and a toddler, so my husband ended up sleeping in our daughter's room. Something really wrong with that picture. I was searching the internet for some answers for my questions and to look for a fix, and found Elizabeth Pantley who was looking for test moms for her new book for toddlers and preschoolers. I was fortunate enough to be selected as a "test Mom" for this book and very proud to say that the modifications that we made as a family worked for us.
Every one wants instant results, they think by reading something it will miraculously happen. It takes time, some kids adjust well quickly, some will adjust over many months, but the importance of this book is that consistency is the key. I could have given up many times to get my daughter and later my son into their own beds, but I knew that it wasn't going to be overnight and I came to accept that.
My daughter has a nightly routine, it is still the same routine at 6 as it was at 2. I took what Elizabeth Pantley gave to me, and applied it to our bedtime battles. I am not saying that you have to use what she says word for word, you may have to make adjustments that work for you and your childs personality. But I do know that it works. My daughter slept through the night at 2.5 yrs old and my son was about 13 months, and thankfully I had this book because I was able to curtail some of his bedtime battles at a much early age.
Yes it does work and it is a very easy read, but like I said, if you are looking for a quick fix, I think you will be hard pressed to find that anywhere. If you are serious about making a change, Elizabeth gives many options and alternatives to make this a successful change.
Works with every parenting style except CIO.......2007-05-25
This book proved so helpful to me and my family. It helped me to understand just how much sleep my almost two year old son really needed and how important naps were no matter how much sleep he was getting at night. I love that she gives so many examples and basically says that sleep is important no matter your parenting style. She does not seem to have a bias for/against anything other than no "crying it out". She explains her reasoning for that too. I highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks their child has a sleep problem and to anyone who thinks they don't have a sleep problem but they have a child who is cranky and clingy. I'd give more than 5 stars if it could be rated higher.
NO CIO.......2007-05-23
This book is wonderful for those who choose to put their kids to sleep on their own without making them cry-it-out. It works!
Helpful encouragement, good ideas.......2007-05-16
If you are looking for a gentle approach to helping your child sleep through the night, this is a great book. I also appreciate that the author is sensitive to the needs of mothers who are breastfeeding their toddler or pre-schooler. It is encouraging to read that you are not alone in having a toddler who does not sleep through the night. This book has some good ideas that I have used, but I have not put the full method to use. The downsides of this book are that the full method requires a long-term commitment and effort and if you have any doubts about it - as I did - you are not likely to follow through. Also, the author at times is too rigid about not letting your child cry. I have not practiced the "cry it out" approach at all, but with my child's temperment and personality there are times when she cries for a few minutes in bed before falling asleep and I have had to come to accept that as a reality.
Loved this book!.......2007-05-13
I found so many of the suggestions in this book to be helpful, and even bought it as a gift for another mom.

Book Description
Millions of children across the country have food sensitivities or allergies, and the number is on the rise. And most of these children don't get to eat cookies, for fear of the reaction they might have from the wheat, or the peanuts. Imagine the feeling a young child must have as they stand there watching their friends munch on cookies just out of Mom's oven, while they have to make do with yet another carrot stick
.
Leslie Hammond knows that left-out feeling all too well. As a child she suffered from severe food allergies and would watch year after year as, when the birthday song had ended and she'd blown out the candles, her fancy party cake was whisked away and served to her friends, while she ate a dry rice cake. Now the mother of allergic children herself, Leslie vowed to spare her own children that trauma. She had developed over 100 recipes that will appeal to a kid's tastes. Unlike other food-allergy cookbooks already on the market, her recipes hardly ever call for the kinds of ingredients that would gross out any kid -- like tofu.
The book's recipes take into account all of the most common food sensitivities like wheat and gluten, peanuts, or dairy. Each recipe can be modified to fit the dietary needs to the child.
It's divided into three sections -- snacks, main dishes, and treats. Leslie and co-author Lynne Rominger also provide information about how to find what you need in a regular grocery store, instead of requiring a separate trip to the natural foods store. She writes from the perspective of an ordinary working mom, and doesn't design eating regimes that would take all day in the kitchen to satisfy.
With the recipes in this book, even the most sensitive child will get a cookie too.
Customer Reviews:
Awful!.......2007-09-29
This cook book was awful! It didn't help me one bit when I started dealing with my child's food allergies. I thought the recipes would come without having to make all of these modifications on my own. I would never suggest this book to a friend! (OR a stranger for that matter!)
Not good for dairy or eggs........2007-08-02
I am thankful that I borrowed this book from the library first. Almost EVERY recipe calls for butter, sour cream, milk, or egg. It is so bad it is almost funny. Example Buttermilk Pancakes - egg free variation: omit eggs. Dairy free variation - Replace milk with rice milk, and replace butter with margarine. All this book has is a collection of recipes that are not good for dairy allergic people with substitutions at the bottom of almost every recipe. I can do this with any recipe I don't need a special cookbook to tell me to replace milk with rice milk. When I read the cover of the book - More than 150 recipes that are: Wheat Free, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Nut Free, Egg Free, and Low in sugar - I have to laugh. O and if you are allergic to nuts this book gives you some truly profound advice: Omit Nuts.
Best for wheat free.......2007-06-22
Luckily I read the reviews here first and checked out this book at my library before buying it. If your child has multiple allergens, I suggest you do the same. If you have relied on processed foods until now, this book may be helpful and her tone is certainly enthusiastic. However, if you're experienced in the kitchen, this book is a big waste of time and money. Just get out your Joy of Cooking and omit whatever your child is allergic too and you'll have this book.
Most-used cookbook I own.......2007-05-15
Since learning of my 6 year old's allergies a year ago, I have spent hours and hours trying to make "normal" food for him. I wish I would have tried this one first - it would have saved me a lot of time and money. The chicken nuggets, fish sticks, potato pizza, vanilla wafers, are among our favorites now. I highly recommend the book for anyone with kids. An extra plus is that the ingredients were already in my kitchen (white rice flour is common - easy to find, not as expensive as many specialty flours). I made one special trip for vanilla powder to make several of the recipes, and it is so worth it. I LOVE THIS BOOK.
Not what I expected.......2007-04-25
I was very disappointed in this cookbook. I should have done more reserach before I purchased it. Because nearly all of the recipes contain dairy and egg, I have avoided making anything for fear that by using substitutes, the recipe will not be the same. There are far better allergy cookbooks out there.

Fantastic!
It is now my favourite cookbook!
I reccomend it it anyone who has allergies to Wheat or Dairy!
It will be the best help in the kitchen you could ever ask for!
Authors comment.......2003-08-21
In reply to the review from the reader from the Netherlands:
All of the recipes are wheat free and most are also gluten and dairy free
There are about 25 recipes (from over 220) that are indicated as being wheat, rather than gluten free, but these can easily be adapted to gluten free by changing the type of flour or pasta used. About 15 recipes contain dairy products
Less than 35% of the recipes in the book are for warm or cold desserts, most of which are recipes that people on gluten, wheat or dairy free diets could not normally eat
Here are three press reviews:
The Sunday Times Magazine
"A cookbook with such mouthwatering wheat-, dairy- and gluten-free recipes, that your dinner guests will never know the difference."
The Washington Times
"A wonderful addition to any cook's bookshelf... I recommend them to the allergic and non-allergic alike."
The Irish Times
"If your food allergy is to gluten, wheat or dairy products... this cookbook may just change your life."
