Book Description
This gripping debut of the Kate Martinelli mystery series won the Edgar Award for Best First Mystery, generating wide critical acclaim and moving Laurie R. King into the upper tier of the genre. As A Grave Talent begins, the unthinkable has happened in a small community outside of San Francisco. A string of shocking murders has occurred, each victim an innocent child. For Detective Kate Martinelli, just promoted to Homicide and paired with a seasoned cop who's less than thrilled to be handed a green partner, it's going to be a difficult case. Then the detectives receive what appears to be a case-breaking lead: it seems that one of the residents of this odd, close-knit colony is Vaun Adams, arguably the century's greatest painter of women, a man, as it turns out, with a sinister secret. For behind the brushes and canvases also stands a notorious felon once convicted of strangling a little girl. What really happened on that day of savage violence eighteen years ago? To bring a murderer to justice, Kate must delve into the artist's dark past--even if she knows it means losing everything she holds dear.

To Play the Fool.......2007-02-20
A friend turned me on to Laurie King by lending me To Play the Fool.
I was hooked right away.
My next Laurie King book was A Grave Talent
The story was intriguing, the characters were compelling and the action exciting.
I have recommended both books to my friends.

complex and rich.......2007-01-05
Surely this is one of the best mysteries of the 1990s. King sets a new standard for including complex themes in a who-dunnit, and introduces her detective, Kate, while giving us vivid settings and the added bonus of art.
Do not cheat by looking at the end.
The rest of this series is a bit uneven, but With Child and Night Work are excellent. King's Mary Russell series is much better, and her stand-alones are wonderful. If you've just discovered King, you are very lucky indeed.
A Great First Book in the Series.......2006-12-20
I really got into this book. I had never read this author before but I will be picking up some of her other books. I would like to try her Sherlock Holmes series also. I'm not going to write a plot summary since so many others on Amazon have already written one. I really enjoyed the exploration of the characters in this book. Kate, the main character, grows and you find out so much about her. You feel her struggles, triumphs and sadness in this book. I also enjoyed her partner and watching how he handles the stress of a case. This book kept me on my toes until the end. I didn't know who the murderer was and Ms. King keeps the twists coming. I'm looking forward to buying the next in the series to see what has been happening to the characters. I would highly recommend this series so far to anyone looking for a good mystery.
Finally got to the begining. Start here when you begin........2006-11-02
I've read several of the Kate Martinelli mystery/police procedural novels, but somehow never got to the first one. Shame on me! This is a fine piece of writing. The beginning is a little slow, but we need the information on Al and Kate to follow the rest of the book and watch their relationship develop. Although I never believed that Vaun Adams was the killer, I couldn't figure out who was. I loved the way King peeled the layers back to bare the heart of the true criminal.
Intensely powerful murder mystery .......2006-07-31
A Grave Talent by Laurie R. King is the first book in the Kate Martinelli series. I was a bit hesitant to read this book. Although I love King's Mary Russell series, I'm not a big fan of police procedural murder mysteries, but respect for King's writing won out, and I'm glad for it. Three little girls have been kidnapped and murdered in San Francisco and all of their bodies dumped on land near an unusual community. Living in that community is Vaughn Adams, an artist who was arrested and convicted of killing a little girl 18 years ago. Kate and her new partner are assigned to the case. From that description the book could be written by just about any of the famous authors of this genre: Kellerman, Cornwell, even Grafton, but King writes her characters with such care and sets the mood so carefully it's impossible not to become wrapped within the story. Her elegant writing allows the reader to know the characters intimately and yet still view them as intriguing and enigmatic (this is also true in the Mary Russell series). For every secret revealed, you know there are several yet to come. There are several turns of phrase that are almost poetic and not often found in this style of writing. King's writing takes the reader into dark places that you wouldn't normally want to go, but when you return, you feel better for having taken the trip. This is a writer with an amazing intensity.

Product Description
In this first in a series by the author ofThe Beekeeper's Apprentice (St. Martin's, 1994), Kate Martinelli finds herself with a promotion to detective in the San Francisco Police Department, a new (older, male) partner, Al Hawkins, and a new assignment, to solve a series of murders of young females. Driven to prove herself, Kate must grapple with long hours, very little time for her personal life, her own compulsion to protect her privacy, and the case itself, which is not only devastating because of the brutal murders but also because the primary suspect turns out to be a brilliant, reclusive painter whom Kate admires. King's intricate plotting, intriguing characters, and eye for detail make this an outstanding mystery and a great start to the series. Alyssa Bresnahan reads with crisp forthrightness, varying characters through intonation and pitch and ably conveying a range of emotions.

Book Description
Brutus, a Rottweiler who had suffered a lesion in his vertebrae, was barely able to move when he was brought to Angel's Gate hospice and rehabilitation center. Now, after months of hydro- and physical therapy, he enjoys daily walks. Thanks to Susan Marino, who runs the center in her Long Island home, more than 150 animals, from dogs and cats to horses and birds, are given the kind of hospice care usually reserved for people. Some recover from their life-threatening injuries or illnesses, while others are given refuge through their final days.
Getting Lucky tells the story of Lucky-a dog who's sent to Angel's Gate to die but instead finds a whole new way of living-and 20 other animals at the hospice. But it's also the story of a woman with a mission. Marino, a former pediatric nurse, started Angel's Gate 12 years ago in the belief that even critically ill and abandoned animals deserved to die with dignity and respect, and her work has made her a genuine hero. She speaks to veterinary groups across the country about her groundbreaking approach to animal care. This important book is a testament to the difference one person can make. AUTHOR BIO: Susan Marino was an intensive-care pediatrics nurse for 30 years, working with terminally ill children. She founded the nonprofit Angel's Gate hospice 12 years ago in her home on Long Island and continues to run the center with her husband. This is her first book. Denise Flaim is the author of The Holistic Dog Book and a staff writer and pet columnist for Newsday. She is the owner of champion Rhodesian ridgebacks.

Great read.......2007-01-04
Once you open the book, you can't put it down. My husband picked it up to
read the first couple of pages and did not put it down till he was done.
I did the same. Since I did some volunteer work at Angel's Gate during the summer, I was really able to connect with some of the animals and was able to see how much they are loved and cared for.
Great heart breaking book!.......2006-04-27
This book is one that has to be read just to see what people go through when they lose a pet. I never thought I would be the one that was so attached to a pet. But I did for 13 years. Then when it was time. I made sure everything was is place for a pet funeral and made a great headstone for him. He was a loyal friend and I miss him dearly. I know that there are Angels Gates in heaven.
Getting Lucky is a 5 star read!.......2006-04-01
Getting Lucky is for all of us who share our hearts and lives with our animals. This book will make you laugh and cry, sometimes both at once. Beautifully written, with humor, love and sadness that just pulls at your heart. You won't be able to put it down. Angel's Gate is truly a place where "Angels" go to be loved and let go. I dedicate this review to my own angel, Jakob M. who passed on only 1 year ago. I'm grateful that places like Angel's Gate exist and that there are people out there who know just how special these creatures are.
Love, Love, Love IT!.......2006-03-24
This book is awesome! I recently lost my beloved Black Lab, Molson, who was 11 years old. I felt like I was there with all the pets in this book. I wish I lived near Angel's Gate... I would be there to volunteer in a minute! How wonderful these people are to take on such a heartfelt approach to helping these precious animals. I found myself smiling from ear to ear throughout the whole story! A must for all animal lovers to read!
LOVE IT!!.......2006-03-14
Even if you dont have a pet but like animals this is a must read...
I dont have a pet now but have had them growing up as a child. Absolutely Love this book and the touching stories...I laughed and cried and sometimes at the same time... The only bad thing about this book, is that I finished it. I wanted it to go on and on and to read more of the wonder of these wonderful animals...I feel that animals are a gift we can learn so much from them. I agree with Susan Marino the Author. Our pets have souls. They show it daily. I need for there to be a second book and on and on. The love you feel when you read about these animals (pets) is so tangible. Its not so sad as you would think but I came away reading it with feeling uplifted and it truly touched my spirit...I almost didnt buy this book I thought it was about just one dog but its soooooo much more then that and its woven richly with other pets this family and volunteer"s have helped see to there end days. What an honor to read this gem of a book. Thank you Sincerely yours Diane

American falls through Gate into Escore.......2001-10-17
Andre Norton has a soft spot for cats, and she includes a wild cat and her two kittens in this latest venture into magical Escore. American Kelsie McBlair falls through an ancient stone gate in the Scottish Highlands while rescuing a wounded wild cat. She and the cat (who promptly gives birth to two kittens) are besieged on the other side of the Gate by a Dark Rider and a pack of skeletal hounds, almost before Kelsie realizes she is no longer in Scotland. (It will take the rest of the book to persuade her that there is no way back to her home world).
When a dying Witch bequeaths her true name and her jewel of power to Kelsie, the American finds herself compelled to take up the woman's sorcerous mission into the heart of Escore, where magic lies in "trembling balance between the forces of Light and those of the Dark."
"The Gate of the Cat" is a stand-alone fantasy in Norton's fabulous Witch World series. It takes place (roughly) after the conclusion of "Sorceress of the Witch World" and "Trey of Swords," since characters from both of those novels also play roles (or are at least mentioned) in this book. Yonan, a former border guard of Estcarp and the main narrator of "Trey of Swords," is one of Kelsie's companions on her reluctant quest. Their other companion is a rather nasty, man-hating witch who is known as Wittle. (Sometimes Norton attaches clunky names to her characters, but Wittle really is Wittle).
The magic and the narrative pace are vintage Norton, and she takes us into one of the vilest places of the Dark to be found in any of the Escore fantasies.
"The Gate of the Cat" is a must-read for Witch World fans.
Product Description
The best of science fiction and fantasy...Through a Gate on distant Earth, Simon Tregarth had come, to a world where witches rule supreme. In the land of Estcarp - home of the Old Race, peace-loving heirs to archaic knowledge - he drove out invading aliens and became a great and respected leader. But his children, a warrior, a warlock and a witch, fled the witches' rule, answering an ineffable call to the forgotten land of Escore. There, they warred with the evil stirred to life by their coming....a peril that continues unabated.....

Very endearing and excellent.......2005-08-04
I LOVE this book. I had read it as a youngster in grade school, having found it in the school library. I remember I checked it out continuously, so my name was written on the check out card at least twenty times!! As an adult, I had looked for this book to add to my personal library. When I finally found it and re-read it, I was taken back again to those wonderful times. This is highly recommended to anyone who loves a light hearted mystery, loves cats (as a talking cat is one of the main characters), or enjoys happy endings. LOVE IT!!!

Book Description
Nature's Lessons in Healing Trauma...
Waking the Tiger offers a new and hopeful vision of trauma. It views the human animal as a unique being, endowed with an instinctual capacity. It asks and answers an intriguing question: why are animals in the wild, though threatened routinely, rarely traumatized? By understanding the dynamics that make wild animals virtually immune to traumatic symptoms, the mystery of human trauma is revealed.
Waking the Tiger normalizes the symptoms of trauma and the steps needed to heal them. People are often traumatized by seemingly ordinary experiences. The reader is taken on a guided tour of the subtle, yet powerful impulses that govern our responses to overwhelming life events. To do this, it employs a series of exercises that help us focus on bodily sensations. Through heightened awareness of these sensations trauma can be healed.

Waking the Tiger.......2007-09-12
I work as a Certified Rolfer and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Peter Levine's genius is evident in this clear and concise piece of therapeutic literature. I am pleased to refer clients, friends, and colleagues to this book so that they might benefit from reading it. I have personally found the book to be of tremendous assistance in understanding the scientific basis of trauma as well as the psychospiritual significance of traumatic events.
Waking the Tiger.......2007-08-16
This is an excellent book on recognizing and offering healing help to those who are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. More people should become familiar with the method which could be invaluable not only for people with depression, anxiety, lonliness, and so much more, but also as an incredible tool to help our returning vets, who are undoubtedly suffering from this disorder. It is a book that should be touted by all book sellers.
Excellent introduction to Somatic Experiencing.......2007-08-11
Dr. Levin covers the energy stuckness involved in trauma and how to jump-start your natural healing process. Trauma is frozen energy as a result of being "too civilized" and denying or trying to not have your emotions in the moment. The book provides some useful understandings about how to release the stuck energy by sensing and moving your body and also getting in touch with positive mental energy. It also covers the genesis of trauma in more depth than many previous books on the subject. --Dr. Fred Gallo, author of Energy Tapping for Trauma: Rapid Relief from Post-Traumatic Stress Using Energy Psychology and Energy Tapping
Waking the Tiger.......2007-06-14
great service, book arrived in excellent condition
The Rave of the Ignorant.......2007-05-12
This book fundamentally ignores major aspects and driving forces that need to be addressed in our country and world regarding abuse, violence and resulting trauma, especially in regards to specific contributing factors of complex trauma and abuse. It seems as though Levine takes on minimal aspects in the healing of trauma, but fails to realize that trauma in some areas of this world are everyday occurrences and some types of more complex trauma will not be curtailed or remedied by such simple "healing methods". Levine also seems to completely deny that in many situations, the inherent fight/flight response in nature, especially those attached to memory, could just save your own life.
Before you order this book, (or any book on trauma) you should be aware that most people who profess "professional ability to address and cure trauma" have apparently never really been a true victims of serious and/or complex trauma and apparently don't understand certain key elements of how SEVERE trauma and abuse affects individuals, as well as their community, workplace and families. The few examples Levine offers are extremely limited examples and seem to be part of a marketing objectives for his trademark invention of "somatic experiencing"...think he'll treat you for free without some sort of financial compensation?
I will give him some credit for recognizing some aspects of the body and mind's innate natural responses as an aid to cure itself through its own accord, but he fails to exemplify or recognize that healing comes in varying degrees of personal capability, but this isn't anything new...it's what the body and mind does on its own through time, and especially with personal effort and awareness and a keen willingness to escape continued abuses and trauma! Levine's approach to "ignoring memory", stating that memory is even "false", is something that needs to be seriously considered, as memory is what often saves us from being victimized in the future by similar or repeated circumstances.
This book seriously fails to recognize that certain people in life are inherently in a vulnerable position to begin with, (i.e. elderly people or foster children with no family, psychiatric and medical patients) whose doctors seem to enjoy the facilitation of keeping them drugged to bypass deeper issues that could otherwise be resolved, but keep the financial wheels of the machine turning. And then there are the individuals whose families have victimized a family member through scapegoating measures and have even turned their backs on that child, while using him/her as a scapegoat for their own agendas. Levine's book fails to address those aspects of even more serious trauma resulting from that type of victimization!
It seems that this book addresses the more mundane types of trauma as with auto accidents or situations one CAN take measures to more easily prevent. He certainly overlooks some important key factors of the importance of memory and specific strategies for avoiding future abuses. Certainly the industry doesn't want you to know that you won't be treated or "cured", unless they are financially compensated for their efforts, and most can't or won't even address the deeper interrelated problems connected with continued abuses in the legal and justice systems, financial markets and businesses, government and political abuses of everyday life!
Failing to bring to light these other aspects of abuse and potential for "preventing or healing them" is a serious flaw of this book. I think Levine needs to do much more research in this area before writing another book that can actually help those in such situations.
This book does not adequately address situations where you are forced to live in dangerous conditions or address dangerous living conditions, such as bad neighborhoods, disaster prone areas, violent and manipulative agendas with political, legal and social problems that face society everyday that continue to be the root of trauma that is being completely ignored by professionals! These are serious aspects of serious abuse issues that are unfortunately being overlooked and/or ignored by policy makers, as well as "therapists". The latest legal, political and psychological catchphrases of "spousal abuse", "child abuse", and others at least address some family issues, have some legal recourse, but what about political, legal, medical, financial, and justice system abuses? If your lawyer is screwing you, do you think your therapist will really tell you the truth of the political situation of the legal system, even if he/she is aware of it? It's doubtful!
The only way this author could ever change my opinion after my extensive experiences with severe trauma, abuse, and serious corruption that has facilitated public illusions that I have witnessed in the mental health fields, legal fields, law enforcement fields, medical fields and many other professional fields bombarded with rampant and latent corruption, is for this author to address those absolute traumas by those responsible, contributing entities that Levine horribly fails to confront in this book. I personally know what kind of guts it takes to be willing to be hated for the truth...
It makes me wonder if the "rave reviews" aren't the undertakings of fellow members of academia, or if they are from those who are not fully capable of addressing abuse, absent of self-serving outcomes.

Customer Reviews:
It's pretty good stuff.......2005-09-18
I love this restaurant, and I love this cookbook. The book is worth buying probably for the 5 grain croquettes recipe alone. Most of the recipes I've tried have been fairly easy to do (if a little time consuming and finnicky-- case in point, stirring chick pea polenta constantly for 25 minutes, then allowing it to cool, then baking for another hour) and definitely worth the effort...the only recipe I tried that simply did not work for me was the kanten. The book calls for several ingredients that require people not living in cities or in touch with their local asian market to venture into unknown territories, but with the expansion of vegetarian friendly corporations like Whole Foods, it's getting easier. Even so, I can't give this book 5 stars. There are some dishes I wouldn't try, and I found the commentary on the lifestyle choice that took up nearly half the cookbook was not something I found particularly convincing or informative...especially, as one reviewer pointed out, since many recipes call for ingredients berated in the prefix.
delicious vegan cooking, even if you are not vegan.......2005-08-23
angelica's restaurant has the best vegan cooking around, even if you are not remotely a vegetarian. what is unique to angelicas is that they don't try to make food taste like things with meat, and this is what makes their recepies particularly delightful. the foundation of their cooking is based in good, organic ingredients. after eating at the restaurant, the cookbook does not disappoint. you will find, though, that a food processor is a staple to cooking angelica style, and while the final product is delicious, the recepies are labor intensive. you will also need to make sure you have a good organic food market nearby. the receipies called for many ingredients that are not available at your local supermarket. that being said, it was worth every effort upon tasting the walnut-lentil pate in my own home :)
Tasty and Easy.......2004-11-25
So far, every dish I've made from this cookbook has been delicious. Great basis for a recipe that you can tweak to your liking. I get a fresh box of mixed organic produce weekly (a surprise mix of what is fresh that week! in NY www.urbanorganic.net) and this is a great book to use when I have no idea what do with a certain veggie. Broken down by food (ie. soups, salads, etc) and a great index by specific vegetable/tofu etc as well. I love the way the paperback binding works so that the recipe stays flat and doesn't flip pages. Convenient and helps me stay creative and healthy!
for a vegan cookbook, this has a strange vibe.......2004-08-25
I'd been looking forward to getting this cookbook for months, and finally bought a copy through Amazon. I received it yesterday, and in the evening I settled down to peruse it. The recipes look quite interesting, and I was eager to try them.
But, I was very surprised to see the author references Sally Fallon on the topic of canola oil. Sally Fallon? The zealous anti-vegetarian crusader? The internet guru who claims you'll sicken and die, if not for consuming vast quantities of meat? Why is her name referenced as an expert in a vegetarian cookbook? If Fallon and her research are to be believed about canola oil, isn't Leslie McEachern in a way validating Fallon's entire ideology, which includes devout anti-vegetarianism?
McEachern might have found another authority to back up her ideas about canola, which is a controversial subject in itself.
Great cookbook, good primer to natural foods........2003-12-05
This is a wonderful book. It is part cookbook, part food background. Although not all of the recipes are macrobiotic, a good deal of them are, illustrating just how tasty this style of food can be. I've only tried two recipes so far due to the fact that I just bought the book. I made the brown rice gravy, adding mushrooms for Thanksgiving and it was a taste sensation as well as an all around hit. I also made the oden, a five root japanese stew which was hearty and delicious. It was great paired with steamed kale and brown rice. Overall, this is a great book. Another thing that makes it good is that the binding is sturdy enough to stay fully open while cooking, which does not happen too often with soft cover books.
