Book Description
For more than a decade Donna Leon has been a bestseller in Europe with a series of mysteries featuring Commissario Guido Brunetti. Always ready to bend the rules to solve a crime, Brunetti manages to maintain his integrity while maneuvering through a city rife with politics, corruption, and intrigue.
In Uniform Justice, a young cadet has been found hanged, a presumed suicide, in Venice's elite military academy. Brunetti's sorrow for the boy, so close in age to his own son, is rivaled only by his contempt for a community that is more concerned with protecting the reputation of the school, and its privileged students, than with finding the truth. The young man's father is a doctor and former politician. He is a man of an impeccable integrity who inexplicably avoids talking to the police. As Brunetti pursues his inquiry, he is faced with a wall of silence. Is the military protecting its own? Or has Brunetti uncovered a conspiracy far more sinister than that of a single death?

Murder Mystery Set in Venice.......2007-08-30
This has been a summer of unusual reading, and the latest book I am reviewing here, "Uniform Justice," reflects my recent fascination with all things mystery and thriller. Prior to this summer, this genre is not something I would usually consider. However, I have discovered a lot of great writing so far, and this book is a good example.
Leon's book, "Uniform Justice," is part of a series based on Comissario Guido Brunetti. However, when I read the book, I wasn't even aware of that fact, so it's clear that the book stands alone, to be enjoyed without any previous encounters with Leon's work. This story centers on the supposed suicide of a young cadet at a military academy in Venice. The academy resents any interference from outsiders, particularly those of the Venice Police and Brunetti. The story enlarges once the boy's family becomes involved in the investigation.
While there is plenty to enjoy on a good mystery storytelling basis, the book's real pleasures can be found on many other levels as well: first, it is a love song to the city of Venice, its buildings, people, and food. Second, the story closely follows the life of investigating Commissario Guido Brunetti and his own family life (he has a son the same age as the victim); particularly interesting are the accompanying office politics of his job. Finally, the story is an examination of the Italian way of doing things (manners, politics, bribery, and corruption).
This is a very interesting book, even for readers who don't consider themselves mystery fans. For setting alone, the book is worth reading, but I think, like me, you will find yourself on the lookout for other Comissario Brunetti tales once you finish this one.
Another wonderful Brunetti.......2007-01-09
If you like international detective stories and don't know Donna Leon's series starring Commisario Guido Brunetti then you're in for a treat. Every installment is uniformly well written, engrossing and enjoyable. Settle into crime, family dinners (with polenta)and an occasional glass of Soave as our Venetian policeman copes with fatuous superiors and nasty criminals. End with some Vin Santo.
Not That Death in Venice.......2006-10-05
Donna Leon, originally from New Jersey, has lived in Venice, Italy, for twenty years, as lecturer, professor, and finally mystery writer/student of Baroque music(and she actually motivated me to buy a CD of excerpts from Handel's operas). As of 2006, she's written 16 Commissario Guido Brunetti mysteries, all set in or around Venice.
First thing to be said is, she knows the place: its geography, weather, people, houses, jobs, transportation, politics, smells, feel, food, and death, and no, not in that "Death in Venice" (by Thomas Mann) way. Her Venice has little in common with the beautiful, ethereal city celebrated so frequently in song, story, and movie, and so fondly remembered by multitudes of tourists. Her Venice is where Venetians live and work.
Commissario Brunetti is a melancholy and cynical man, made tired by endless infighting in the top-heavy Italian police bureacracy; and by many disappointments in dealing with what he sees as the self-serving corruption of the Italian power elites. Only the domestic warmth of his family: wife Paola, a hereditary contessa born to one of Venice's oldest families, who chooses to teach, cook, and to espouse left-wing causes (that often sound as if her creator might also support them); his children Raffi and Chiara, and many good meals, enables Brunetti to stay centered and to continue fighting the good fight.
Many people feel that Leon relies too heavily on stereotypes. Her view of Italy as a whole reflects the country that certain liberal bohemias love to hate. She sometimes slows the action of her books to express her political views. "Uniform Justice," particularly, can be viewed as being a bit too full of political digressions. Leon may also be accused of choosing the subject matter of her books for political reasons; of painting all southern Italians as dumb and dishonest, all Venetians as intelligent and honest, all American tourists as fat and crude, and all women under 35 as beautiful. There's some truth to all these criticisms.
In "Uniform Justice" Brunetti is sent to the upper-crust "San Martino Military Academy," where Cadet Ernesto Moro has been found hanged in the boys' lavatory. The school, man and boy, prefers to think Moro a suicide, and whispers various nasty habits of his. They close ranks against Brunetti, as they do against all outsiders, particularly the low-born. However, Brunetti doesn't think the cadet's death is suicide, and digs doggedly until he can prove the cadet's death is murder. Furthermore, the death is directly attributable to the self-interest and corruption of the Italian elites, and to the weakness of any countervailing powers, such as the boy's own family, that might have saved him. But does Brunetti imagine he has liberated Italy from this kind of business? No, sorry, no can do.
It's a really sad story, and I particularly liked the fact that Leon doesn't ever forget that murder, violent death, is tragic, and in the case of a young person, doubly so. If you don't mind a gritty Venice, one where the gondoliers don't sing night and day, this book, and this series, may be for you.
My last Donna Leon book.......2006-08-26
I've happily read all the Donna Leon mysteries, and enjoyed them from the beginning, although less and less lately. I recognize the author's right, to a point, to push her views through her characters, but the books have become so "anti-" that I have trouble enjoying them. Death of Faith was little more than a bitter anti-Catholic rant. And Uniform Justice does the same for the military, painting all military members of all countries as ultra conservative, brainless, immoral, borderline (or worse) facists. The many anti-American and anti-tourist comments (a true but over used cliche) are also harder and harder to get past pleasantly.
The series has degenerated into little more than bitter ranting, and left character development and intricate plot twists behind. Donna Leon seems to have had five or six good stories to tell, and is now just filling paper and lining her pockets with her reputation.
I'll miss these books, the first five or six were so pleasant, witty, and fun.
Great Series.......2006-08-04
I did not feel this book was as good as others. However, this is still one of the best series I've read in a long time. The writing has reminded consistently good, unlike the Anne Perry series in which the writing deminished to such a level that I can no longer read her books
Also, has anyone noticed that the books seem to get more and more cynical as the series moves forward -- Patta gets dumber and Venice and Italy more corrupt?

A solid book, but could have been better.......2007-07-04
Overall this book gives a very good review of Romita's main work.
The main sampling is from Spider-man. Half of the 22 stories are related to or feature Spider-Man. Including the main ones I consider the most important #39-40 Romita's 1st issues of spider-Man and versus the Green Goblin, #42 1st Mary Jane or at least where we can see her, #50 classic cover and intro of the Kingpin. Also included is the Daredevil #16-17 Romita's first Spider-Man art (he would take of Spider-man's book a copuple of months latter) and Captain America #138 which features a Spider-Man crossover.
As for my complaints:
There is no commentary other than an intro from Romita JR.
Some of the stories: TTA #77 and TOS #77 are penciled over Kirby layouts which takes away from the Romita look. If they are going to do this they could have had the death of Gwen Stacy, which Romita inked over Gil Kane, but it looked much more like Romita's work than these two and from my understanding he was involved in the decision to kill off Gwen. Another two stories that I do not know why they were included are Strange Tales #4 and Menence #6. These stories could have been replaced by the Femizon story which I think is one of, if the not the best Romita work ever done.
Some of the coloring looks like watercolors, bright in one spot and dark in another. It is really bad on Spider-Man #39 with skin tones and the Goblin's cosume fading in and out really badly.
Lastly there is a nice drawing Romita did and painted over by Alex Ross showing the characters Romita helped design or introduce. Mary Jane is in the center where the pages meet, so it is hard to see her and she is split in half. I wish they had put the sketch on one page and a fold out page so that the picture wouldn't be split in two.

Interesting, Entertaining and Full of Surprises.......2006-02-01
I really liked this book. I read it many years ago, and picked it up again last year to read once again. It was written back in the early 80's, but set in the near future. I enjoyed how the authors would take real excerpts from newspapers and put them at the beginning of every chapter. It was also interesting how they would add their own articles for the events that happened later (ie: they would have more excerpts that would be from the year 1990, or 2000, or 2010, etc. etc.) They painted a dark image of how the world may end up, but I think they did a fantastic job of keeping you interested and wanting to read more and more. If you like Fiction that's got a swirl of truth, than you will love Nature's End.
A More Coherent Story Than Warday. Good Science Fiction.......2005-08-26
The writing team that brought you the classic Post Nuclear psuedo-autobiography Warday, team up again to tackle another potential disaster, this time it's pollution gone wild. In this ecological disater tale, Strieber and Kunetka use some of the devices they used during Warday, particularly Government Reports, Newspaper Articles and witness interviews to give the feeling your reading a true story. Yet, unlike Warday, this not a "fake documentary" but a good, action filled story with so very well drawn characters. I'm not sure of the science behind the whole situation that the writers use, or whether this cautionary tale is even remotely likely, biut as a story, it works. Here they uses some classic science fiction themes reminiscent of Phillip K. Dick, and they do it well.
Load of tripe.......2004-12-28
Absolute absurdity. I read this book back in 1989 and followed the "news headlines" to compare them to actual headlines. Not even close. The air and water are cleaner and technology is making lives better.
A horrifying vision of the future........2003-06-02
This is one of those books that is quite literally unforgettable. It is set circa 2025. In this future, the world is horrendously overpopulated, and has been devastated by ecological havoc and neglect to the point where Earth's biosphere is in jeopardy of collapse. A new world politician, Gupta Singh, believes he has the answer: the "Draft." Under this proposal, which has been secretly adopted by the United States and other countries, on a certain day all human beings would be required to simultaneously take a drug. One third of the doses will be fatal, thereby reducing the world's population by a third in a single day, alleviating the world's population problems.
The authors do a wonderful job projecting current technology and ecological trends in a manner that projects a nightmarish future American and world society. The rich enjoy extended life spans, penthouse living, and the benefits of high technology including sentient laptop computers and refrigerators that talk. The rest of the world including most of America (which seems largely to be comprised of illegal aliens) lives in grinding poverty supported by a government dole. Freedom is largely a thing of the past, the Tax Police have the power to effect summary arrests, and society in general is teetering on collapse.
This novel is intended to be a cautionary novel warning us against neglect of the world's ecology, and it delivers this message successfully, and in my opinion, devastatingly. I am a conservative Republican, (a school of thought not always noted for its ecological conciousness) but nevertheless I admit that this novel heightened my concern for our preservation of the world's forests, oceans, and ecology. Although I doubt that the future will be as grim as the authors show in this novel, nothing in the novel struck me as impossible, and much of it was too plausible for comfort. This is a book that is worth reading because it will challenge the reader to think "outside the box" and examine his or her belief system.
Absurd when I first read it and more so now........2002-08-13
I read this book back in 1987. I thought it was standard apocalyptic tripe then, and the fifteen years since then haven't been kind.
Each section of the book began with a collection of "news clippings." The gimmick was that the first few were taken from actual, historic headlines. These were followed by fictional headlines from the "future," beginning in the early 1990s. These fictionalized headlines built on the environmental problems cited in the actual headlines. Finally, more fictional headlines from the 2010s described horrifying environmental catastrophes, such as brush fires in Southern California's Santa Monica Mountains killing thirty thousand people or thousands of people asphyxiating from smog in Denver.
Of course, the 1990s didn't turn out at all like the authors' fictional version. In fact, the course of nature is going in the opposite direction: the air and water are cleaner (at least in developed countries), not dirtier, than they were when the books were written.
"Environmentalists" like these two authors might as well be Branch Davidians, or die-hard Trotskyists -- always perversely excited by impending doom, and ever-eager to explain that their failed prophecies are all the more far-sighted because they haven't come true yet. There's a reason this book is out of print: it's hopelessly out of date, and intellectually bankrupty to boot. Save your [money].

A brilliant way to introduce our baby to cultural diversity... through food!!!.......2007-09-23
My husband and I are both foodies. We love ethnic cuisines quite a bit. So, we are so happy that our little boy, who's almost a-year-and-half, already loves items like pasta, onigiri, dim sum, fried rice, taco, quesadilla, etc.
I was so excited when I discovered this book series one day. I thought it would be a great addition to his little library, as well as being a great supplement to our effort to introduce him to all the various yummy food different people throughout the world eat. I began with "Yum Yum Dim Sum." It provides lots of fun, helps him associate these yummy dishes with exciting pictures. I cannot wait to get more.
Highly recommended!!!
LOVE this book--love the entire series!.......2007-06-27
My son *loves* this book, as well as AWS's other books in the World Snacks series. You should have seen him labeling the siu mai and other dim sum on the carts at our local restaurant! So fun, educational and beautifully illustrated too.
cool and quirky board book.......2007-05-07
My one year old son loves this board book! We actually have the entire series. It's fun and creative, and I don't have to worry about him ripping the pages. We are hooked!
Wonderful, informative book........2007-01-17
I love this book, my son loves this book, it's all good. Plus, when we go out for dim sum, he can ask for siu mai by himself. Actually, it's even educational for adults who might want to learn a bit more about dim sum. Very creative, fun illustrations, too.
Bad Illustrations.......2007-01-09
Although the idea of this book is excellent and the illustrations are creative, my son cannot tell that it is even food, so he will not even let me read it to him. He is an avid reader (2 yr old) and loves all of his books...except this one. I would love to see this series of books with a different type of illustration.

Chinese Snacks (Wei quan shi pu).......2007-01-15
Speedy delivery. The book is excellent. It makes a great Christmas gift!
Not what I expected.......2007-01-04
The book is actually quite interesting as a cookbook but not what I expected. The recipes are very involved, definitely not for beginners or even cooks with a little experience. The recipes are also in Chinese with English translation (which is a plus actually!!). I haven't had the time to make anything from it... but it is interesting to read.
Not a Reliable Cook Books.......2003-12-12
I tried to make some snack on this book and follow the instruction, but turn out not what I expected and not look like the result on the picture.
I want the entire collection!.......2003-01-05
I LOVE the wei-chuan series of cookbooks. They are billingual and in my opinion the best Chinese cookbooks! I collect cookbooks and have american printed Chinese cookbooks from the 1970's to the present. Even the ones written by Chinese are adapted to suit the American palate in most cases. These cookbooks are terrific though! The recipes are all very close to my auntie's and grandmother's recipes and techniques. I love the photos guiding you through difficult steps. In this book- you'll find all the goodies you get in chinatown. i've tried out a lot of the recipes and they TASTE like the ones in chinatown! (uh- that would be a good thing!) I love the variety in this book; buns savory and sweet, moon cakes, egg tarts (dontots- the best thing in the world straight out of the oven!), dim sum- shui mai- har gao (that shrimp dumpling that everyone always orders) , jung taes- the Chinese burrito, sesame balls (I've burned my both of my hands entirely with hot oil- trying to make these puff so be CAREFUL!), you tiau those sticks of greasy bread that my mom refers to as a chinese donut for some reason, those gorgeous pastry flowers that look impossible to make but are surprisingly simple... okay this is just an amazing book and you will amaze yourself when you make your first snack. (so what if it looks completely different from the picture- the taste is still the same!!!)
Excellent, if time-consuming, food!.......2002-09-19
Many of the snacks in here are simply delicious and the recipes include large full-color photo of the results as well as photos of any complex procedure. The instructions are clear and in both Chinese and English. The only down-fall is that many recipes are very time-consuming or include ingredients that aren't found in a regular supermarket. Also a few recipes in here could be considered full-fledged main dish items, which is not bad, but could be confusing because of the title.
All of the recipes are authentic and incredibly fantastic. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to start cooking authentic Chinese food.

An Astonishingly Good Dim Sum Cookbook.......2005-02-27
Why do I say "astonishingly good"? Because this slim volume with its terrible puns, pseudo-folksy text, and grainy black-and-white pictures, is the last place you would expect to find such really good, authentic, yet easy-to-make recipes for dim sum.
As another reviewer--with whom I completely agree--points out, things like Swansdown cake flour (a substitute for rice flour in the "old days," but still useful if you can't get to an Asian market) seem bizarre, but actually produce a product that is 99% indistinguishable from the real thing. I used this book for years when it was the only one available; even now it's still in my Top Five (others are Eileen Yin-Fei Lo's "The Dim Sum Dumpling Book," Mai Leung's "Dim Sum and Other Chinese Street Foods"--also known in another edition as "The Chinese Peoples Cookbook"--and the three dim sum books published by Wei-Chuan Publishing). If you want to make dim sum at home, whether you're a beginner or an experienced cook, get a copy of this book!
the dim sum bible.......2005-02-24
This is the random house imprint of the 1977 "Dim Sum" by Rhoda Lee published by Taylor & Ng.
If you have ever been to a Chinese tea house, you will know that Dim Sim is a culture upon itself. Part of this book is Rhoda Yee's childhood experiences with dim sum in her village in China, the move to Hong Kong, and finally to America; all well-written in distinctive conversational 1970s-style prose.
The dim sum recipes are spectacular; and most come with a story or legend about how the dish came about. All the dishes are authentic (siu mai, har gow, fun gor, char siew pow), and most of the famous dishes have a BW photo to show the finished dish. The only minor criticism is some of the commercial ingredients used are archaic (swanson cake flour?), but you can make sensible substitutions.
This is one of the 2 cookbooks considered as the bibles of dim sum, the other being Chinese Dim Sum by the Wei-Chuan Cooking school.
This imprint is out of print, but because it was reasonably well distributed in its day, you can get a used copy at a reasonable price.
Otherwise you can order new reprints from Taylor and Ng directly.
I am puzzled by why Rhoda Yee and the published never came out with new editions of this wonderful gem of a cookbook.
Book Description
Tasty tidbits that make a meal or serve as appetizers: that’s Dim Sum. And it allows diners to sample a wide range of foods, from dumplings to shrimp balls, in bite-sized portions. These simple recipes—which use authentic ingredients such as Shao Shing rice wine—make it easy to create a luscious Chinese banquet. A discussion of equipment (woks, cleavers), followed by information on techniques such as stir-frying and red cooking, will get home chefs started. Each recipe—with its fillings, doughs, marinades, and sauces—is beautifully laid out, along with advice on preparation, variations on each dish, and introductions to unfamiliar ingredients.

There really is no reason to own any other book on the subject. I am very pleased that I bought this book and will be ordering the rest of the author's titles.
In my opinion, acquiring all of the author's cookbooks first before buying the other English language Chinese cookbooks makes an important foundation to understanding what you eat in America and how the food is cooked at home. Then proceed to the other cookbooks and hopefully to eating the more elaborate levels of Chinese cooking. I didn't pick up the author's cookbooks until very recently and only after learning that the author is from Sun Tak. I wish I had bought her books long ago.
A rare gem!.......2006-02-02
Not only does this book include all the favorite Hong Kong style dim sum dishes, but it also includes step-by-step illustrations in beautiful and yet informative pen-and-ink drawings. You will use this book for every Chinese meal, so buy two, in case one of them gets tea spilt upon it.

Classic "Deem Sum" as Viewed by a Western Reader.......2000-01-05
An excellent starter guide to dim sum, with recipes for steamed, pan-fried, roasted, and (of course) deep-fried dishes. Excellent recipe for pork bun filling (although not a great dough recipe); lotus leaf ("sticky") rice; crab cheese wontons ("crab rangoon"); turnip cakes; har gow; and custard tarts.
For the best baked bun dough, consult The Dim Sum Book. For steamed bun dough, consult The Chinese People's Cookbook. However, use the filling from this book as it's more authentic in flavor.
Enjoy!

Do-ahead dim sum.......2005-09-01
The author has taken a different spin on dim sum and geared it to the westerenized audience. She has included many authentic recipes and shows the reader how prepare the dishes months in advance so that they may be frozen and reheated later. This way the dishes can be enjoyed all year around whenever the craving hits you. Some of the recipes include meat filled rice noodle rolls, fried won tons, peking pan-fried dumplings, spring rolls, fish cakes, yangchow fried rice, stuffed bean curd, stuffed chicken wings, shao-mai, bbq pork buns, lotus leaf rice, har gow, noodles, soup, snacks, desserts, etc. Many of these foods are what I grew up eating and still love to eat.
