Still Waters
Situated on a peaceful lake in the prettiest part of the north Georgia mountains, Sutherland seems like a nice town, warm and quiet. The kind of place where families know their neighbors and children can grow up safe.
Run Deep
But this picture-perfect hamlet harbors a dark evil -- whispered rumors of greed, incest, and savagery. Buried deep within the lake's waters are hideous secrets, unspeakable horrors that can turn hair white and drive a person mad. Wicked lies that can kill.
And Deadly
Now, one unknowing outsider has the power to reveal the terrifying truth...if he lives.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent spooky mystery!.......2006-08-04
This was another great novel by Stuart Woods. I started out listening to the Stone Barrington novels on disc and finished them all with enjoyment. Then I started on Woods' other novels and was delighted to find they're excellent...every one of them has been a wonderful ride. This particular novel is quite good with well-developed characters and great settings. From an interview with Woods, the novel was developed from a friend's true experience with a seance...that gives you an idea of the type of story this involves. Excellent...I'd recommend it...a mixture of mystery and Stephen King thriller. You'll love it!
What a Waste of Reading Time!.......2005-07-22
I do not know how in the world this novel was on the New York Times bestseller list at one time. Somebody must have been paid off, gotten a kickback, or was simply bribed. The writing & plot was simply childish. The story was contrived and boring. I've read better Nancy Drew books! Save your time. Save your money. Pick something alse....Anything else to read!
not great, not bad.......2004-08-22
Stephen King has some comments on the back of this book and he does as good a job of describing it as I ever could - he calls it "Part detective story, part ghost story, part Southern gothic." That pretty much describes it.
No the best but is good.......2003-10-22
I am an argentinian men so I couldn't read all woods books. this is the last i have read and i think that it could be better. i am not saying that the book is bad, i like it.
i like this sensation of gothic and terror. i think that this book is not the best ( i prefer grass roots, heat, or dead eyes, santa fe rules or white cargo) but is better than L.A times or new york dead.
Kept me awake !.......2003-08-17
Great book ! It made me buy more books from this great suspense /mystery writer. I recommend this book to anyone into the genre .

Book Description
Under The Gun is the long-awaited sequel to the bestselling novel, Gun Shy, continuing the story of St. Paul Police Officers Dez Reilly and Jaylynn Savage. Picking up just a couple weeks after Gun Shy ended, the sequel finds the two officers adjusting to their relationship, but things start to go downhill when they get dispatched to a double homicide--Jaylynn's first murder scene. Dez is supportive and protective toward Jay, and things go all right until Dez's nemesis reports their personal relationship, and their commanding officer restricts them from riding together on patrol. This sets off a chain of events that results in Jaylynn getting wounded, Dez being suspended, and both of them having to face the possibility of life without the other. They face struggles--separately and together--that they must work through while truly feeling "under the gun."
Customer Reviews:
A Sequel That's Better Than the Original.......2007-04-02
Back to tantalize readers, Dez and Jay come full force to deal with new relationship issues both at work and at home. Not only do they find themselves separated at work and mixed up in a murder investigation with a pair of questionable detectives, they also find themselves dealing with emotional issues associated with their new relationship.
Dez has problems dealing with concerns related to Jay and her late partner. As a result, she is temporarily suspended from the force and required to see a psychiatrist. She makes herself scarce and seemingly runs away from Jay as a result. Jay spends a lot of time doing grunt work in a murder investigation until she proves her worth to the two detectives leading the charge. She also spends a lot of time reaching out to her partner in hopes the older woman will finally acquiesce.
It's amazing the ways both protagonists mature emotionally and learn to be true partners as the story progresses. A must read for anyone who enjoyed `Gun Shy,' `Under the Gun' is the continuation of a truly satisfying love story between two women who defy the odds.
Thrilling Sequel.......2006-08-23
Under the Gun is a great book! Gun Shy left us all wanting more of these great characters and this sequel delivers! The plot is good through out and this book is a true page turner.
The love, humor, devotion, sex, and who could forget the COLD weather are all here in this exciting book! I can't wait to read Have Gun Will Travel. I hope Lori Lake keeps the Gun series going...it is an enjoyable, easy read!
Review of "Under the Gun" by Cheri Rosenberg.......2005-03-30
In the second gripping police drama in Lori L. Lake's Gun series, "Under the Gun" delightfully picks up where "Gun Shy" left off and sets the stage for the third novel, "Have Gun We'll Travel." Once you make the acquaintance of Officer Desiree (Dez) Reilly and her partner and lover Rookie Officer Jaylynn (Jay) Savage, you won't be able to get enough of this dynamic duo. The two cops are as different as night and day in appearance and personality. Always the macho cop, Dez, affectionately referred to as "tall, dark, and dangerous," maintains a tough impenetrable shell and demeanor to hide her fears. "[Jaylynn] liked the fact that there was a defensive fortress around her taciturn partner, but that the tall cop had let her find the few chinks in the armor so that she had free access to come and go as she pleased" (p. 378). Dez contains her emotions until the breaking point, while Jay is not embarrassed or afraid to show her feelings. "It occurred to [Dez] that one major thing she liked about Jaylynn was how alive she was. She took on life with zest, whether she was investigating a crime, talking on the phone, eating something tasty, making love, or crying at a sad movie" (p. 271).
"Under the Gun" begins with Dez seemingly happy and hopelessly in love with Jay, the vivacious, light-haired bundle of energy, but at the same time, she is petrified of losing her, which is making her miserable. Jay is proving to be an excellent officer, but her impulsive streak has Dez worried, since Jay repeatedly ends up in harm's way. It's understandable that the introspective Dez, who withdraws and equates letting her guard down with being weak, is afraid of losing the one person who understands her, tolerates her moodiness, and who adds meaning, love, and joy to her life. Lake explores their evolving relationship with rich detail while Dez goes through the biggest transformation of all.
Dez is so adept at concealing her inner turmoil that even she is not aware she's doing it. Having suffered serious traumatic events in her life including the loss of her beloved father, also a police officer, and her partner and close friend Officer Ryan Michaelson, Dez snaps and ends up suspended with her only alternatives being to see psychiatrist Marie Montague, or be kicked off the force. Reluctantly, the skeptical secretive Dez works with Marie. Can Marie save Dez from self-destructing, and going to a very lonely and isolated place where she denies her heart's desire for fear of loss and rejection? Will the astute psychiatrist help Dez learn to bridge the gap in all of her severed relationships, including the ones with her mother Collette and her brother Patrick?
Can Marie help Dez believe Luella, Dez's landlady and chief nurturer, who tells her, "You can't hold onto someone so tight that you choke the life out of them" [p. 280]. Luella tries to convince Dez that loving and losing someone is painful, but avoiding love to avoid pain is not the answer. She also tells her surrogate daughter, "You are a strong person, Desiree Reilly, and you deserve to love and be loved. But you have to make a choice to take the chance" [p. 280].
Lori L. Lake's completely satisfying action/romance novel will engage a full range of emotions that will leave the reader wanting more. No stone is left unturned as all the loose ends are tied up. The psychological journey of the characters' growth and development, particularly Dez's, is just as intriguing as the crime drama, murder investigation, and police work. Every character, no matter how small their role, has a place and reason for being in the story. Lake does not rush through her narrative, but with the perfect pace, 490 pages go by in a blink.
I recommend "Under the Gun" for the strong characterization, loveable characters, and absorbing plot. Anyone who enjoys a realistic look at police procedurals, romance, and psychological drama, will love following the story of Dez and Jay. Lake paints a vivid picture that allows the reader to jump into the story and become a part of Dez's world. It is not surprising that the sequel, "Have Gun We'll Travel," is a finalist for a Golden Crown Literary Society 2006 Goldie Award. "Under the Gun" is a page-turner; read it and you will see what I mean.
A sequel as fine as "Gun Shy".......2004-08-06
A continuation of her excellent first novel and just as good. Along with all of the romance and relationship angst and suspense and a well relayed tactile sense for her setting (I would actually get cold at times while reading from her description of the environment) the thing I liked most about this novel was the presentation of an empathetic, funny, real, genuinely helpful shrink, if only they could all be as intelligent and insightful.
Romance, drama and action in a fabulous sequel to Gun Shy.......2004-07-15
This novel picks up right where Gun Shy left strong veteran cop Dez and her rookie partner (both on and off the job) Jaylynn. Their happiness is clouded by events that force Dez to deal with pent-up stress, emotional baggage and the everlasting question of whether loving and losing is better than never having loved at all.
Since the two main characters are policewomen, there is certainly a fair amount of action and police procedure in this book, but foremost the book delves deeply into concepts of strength and weakness, physical as well as emotional.
I liked this book a lot. You really get to know and feel for the characters. Especially fascinating was Dez's struggle to handle her emotional problems, when so much of the character's self-image seems built on her being the strong, stoic hero coping alone with issues big and small. The way Jaylynn deals with her partner's inner turmoil is also nicely depicted, with a realistic portrayal of her sometimes understanding and at other times, like a lot of their surrounding characters, fooled by the strong self-sufficient appearance of her partner.
I strongly recommend this book. Read Gun Shy first though since it's just as good! Also, if you like this one, try some of Radclyffe's books which are similar, but different. Radclyffe's are often similar story-wise with a lot of focus on strong women, but less fleshy character depiction and more fleshy love scenes. Really good reads the lot of them.

The Land Beneath the State of Michigan.......2007-03-17
This is another fascinating book written for children but appealing to adults by the same author of "The Day the Great Lakes Drained Away" (my favorite of the two). This book is a little deeper than the lakes books, as it focuses more on geology. Even so, the simple drawings and explanations of how the state was formed and why land areas are shaped the way they are is interesting and factual reading.
Book Description
The incredible beauty and biodiversity of the coral reef is brought to life in this expandable accordion book that stretches out to provide a 3-D view of a multicolored undersea world. A look into the tunnel reveals clownfish hovering over a field of anemone tentacles, a spotted moray eel poking its head out from its hiding place, and the countless other sea creatures inhabiting this magnificent, endangered ecosystem. A 16–page guide to the fish and corals of the reef is also included.

Gustafsen Lake: Under Siege.......2000-04-27
Excellent read. It is packed with information and detail about complex native issues. Not a light read, although very thought provoking and inspiring. Geared towards an academic and historical perpective it is not casual bedtime reading, but then again I don't tend to read fluff.

12 Excellent photos of fish in 3-D........2004-07-11
The kids were thrilled out of their socks to view the photos in 3-D. The glasses kept getting lost, but that's another problem. The authors have put a lot of work into this large-sized print book. Well done!!!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent intro to science and biology.......2004-01-26
My son finds this book fascinating and it spurs many new questions every time we read it. The text gives just enough specifics to make learning about the ocean interesting without overburdening young readers with detail. It doesn't try to ignore the fact that our oceans are suffering from pollution, yet it doesn't get weighed down with a negative tone.
What's Under the Sea? (Usborne Starting Point Science).......2003-02-26
Like most of the Usborne Science books, each page of this book is packed full of interesting tidbits of information. This particular book introduces a great variety of sea-related subjects, from "What is a fish?" to "Drilling for oil." We have never read it straight through. Each suject it covers leads to more questions that have to be answered and we then go off to read more on a particular subject of interest. I think that this book's strength is in the questions it leads to, rather than in providing complete answers.

About the series:
The Natural World Series explores different world regions and the people and other living creatures that inhabit them. The central focus of each book is the region's wildlife - its animals, birds, and insects - how and where they live, their foods, and their social, mating, and breeding behaviors. This has a good story and would be a great book or good story for an anthology. The Pictues in this book just ruin it. Again I could see effort but ok read.

Customer Reviews:
A Really Good Read.......2005-10-17
I just finished reading this book and was impressed it was a the author's first. Raine was a complex and sympathetic main character without being overly sweet as some are in series books. I liked that the plot didn't always head in the obvious direction even though I thought the main characters were a little blind to danger at times and (agreeing with the other reviewers), the issue of intimate protection was not handled well with regard to those dangers.
That said, even with those imperfections, it was still the most ingrossing series read I have enjoyed in a long time, maybe because it was from a fresh voice and Raine's personal history was so realistic to me.
I'm going to look for more books by this author right now.
A Virtually Perfect Read!!!.......2004-10-01
I very much enjoyed this book, and like the other reviewer, I can't believe that this is the authors first.
What makes it stand out is not only the romance sweet & the sex hot, but it is a thriller to boot! Someone is stalking Raine and although there is no big surprise in who it is, it still makes for a great read.
The only negative thing I have to say about this book is though while I am aware its fiction, when Raine & Jack first have sex he trys to get protection on and she says not to worry, shes on the pill. Hello? The pill ain't going to protect you from STDs... Anyway, its fiction and in fiction everything will be ok!!!
A very enjoyable and virtually perfect read...
Unbelievable First Book.......2004-07-21
It is hard to believe this is the first novel published by the author. The characters are complex and the author explores their insecurity and aspiration to the fullest. Very romantic and enjoyable read. I look forward to other books written by Ms. Hunter and hope they will come out soon.
interesting cyberspace relationship.......2004-07-15
In Salem, Massachusetts, Raine Covington detests the constant come-ons of males and avoids any social activity outside of cyberspace or office functions. At the office computer guru Jackson Harris is attracted to Raine, but feels she thinks he is a roach so he keeps away from her except when he works on her machine.
Rider and Nilla met on line, but not in person. They are attracted to one another and Rider wants to meet Nilla in the real world. She hesitantly agrees to a rendezvous. However, when Rider and Nilla see one another, they do not see blossoming love, but instead Jack and Raine. Jack knows he must persuade his Nilla that they belong together, but she cannot reconcile the bug with her "lover".
The cyberspace relationship is cleverly done so that the audience observing the chats believes something special is occurring. Rider-Jack is a wonderful protagonist in both personas while Raine fails to come close to Nilla as she holds her beloved culpable for being Jack as if he set her up. Still fans will enjoy this virtual romance that can turn perfect if Jack can convince Raine that he really loves her.

Book Description
Yip Turner spends more time playing computer games than with other kids. For him, virtual reality usually beats reality! So when his dad, a movie special-effects designer, brings home new software for creating virtual actors, Yip is psyched. He and his sister create 'Victor,' a boy who is smart, handsome, and charming-perfect in every way. But when Victor leaves cyberspace and invades their world, Yip realizes that there are bugs in the virtual-actor software. Now his family-and possibly the whole country!-may be in danger. . . .
Customer Reviews:
Virtually Perfect by Dan Gutman. .......2006-10-26
"All I wanted was a friend." Is statement in the book called Virtually Perfect by Dan Gutman. Yip was new in town. He was also lonely, so he created a vactor to be his friend. His dad was a video director. He came in with a huge box called a "vax" short for vactor program. He claimed the vax made an exact replica of the person, so the movie directors wouldn't have to pay stunt people.
Yip tested the vactor by making a replica of himself. Yip was 5ft tall,[...], and lived in a small town outside of New York. There was not much activity there. Yip named the vactor Victor. He looked like a nerd because Yip had no fashion. Then his sister helped him because she was really good at art. Now he looked like one of those popular kids at school.
This book has tons of technology so if you like technology you should read this book. It also has some jokes in it. I love this book, it is one of the best books I have read by Dan Gutman.
Soulless.......2005-07-11
Being a fan of SIMS games, I had to give this book a look.
Yip and Paige Turner create a virtual boy on a simulation program and he becomes...well, real.I mean, as real as a simulated boy could be.(Actually a little more real than that, because this is -after all- a sci-fi novel)
Victor....the name Paige gave him.....longs to see the real world and easily steps out of the computer screen, after promising to be Yips' friend.
But it isn't long before Victor becomes trouble.A whole lot of trouble. He is intelligent but soul less. (Not a good combination) and he does not have a conscience.....
Now Yip has no idea how to delete Virtual Victor!
This is the Worst Book Ever.......2003-12-09
O my gosh I hated this book. We had to read it for literarry circles at school. It was about a dorky kid named Yip and he created a virtually perfect guy simulation who is supposed to be hot but he is actually hitious and Paige, Yip's sister starts falling in love with him which is so gross because she thinks he is hot when he is really hyteous. The other peope in my group hated it too. What a surprise. Maybe Dan Gutman should take up golf instead of writing. Here was our review... Yip is a twelve-year- old boy who is obsessed with building things. When his dad brings home a computer program that mades the perfect human/ actor he is compelled tho make a friend he never had. Victor the virtuall person gets pulled ou tof cyberspace he is perfect at everything but are there any glitches? Well that remains to b seen.
Awsome story line!.......2003-10-19
I found this book a great book for all ages, I read this book, im 13 and i enjoyed it, some parts were a little childish but i found it to be an all around good book. Also i got my younger sister, Kelly, to read it, shes 10. She also enjoyed the book and read it with much enthousiasm.
A must read book- dan gutmans masterpiece.......2002-12-23
In this thrilling tale, 12 year old Yip uses his dad's computer to create a virtual human named Victor. However, Yip has other things in mind beside being Yip's friend... read to find out in this excellent story!

Book Description
Since Roman times, cultures around the world have been enchanted with cooking in clay and the juicy, full flavors it preserves in any dish. Today's healthminded cooks will find an added bonus: Clay pot cooking is practically foolproof and often fat-free. In The Best of Clay Pot Cooking, Dana Jacobi takes a fresh look at cooking in clay pots and comes up with over 40 easy and delectable recipes, from soups and stews to breads and desserts. Some reflect traditional uses for the clay pot, such as roasting poultry and beef; others are inventive new dishes drawing on ethnic influences -- Chicken Tagine with Green Olives & Preserved Lemon, for example, or Salmon with Ginger & Lime, Shrimp & Ham Jambalaya, Black & White Chipotle Chili, Moroccan Semolina Bread, or Banana Bread Pudding. And all these are prepared with minimum fuss, maximum flavor, and enormous nutritional value.

clay pot cook book.......2007-06-08
I was very disappointed. I was expecting recipes for common daily food. It contains only "exotic" foods that are not practical for everyday use.
Durwood
I have mixed feelings about this book........2006-01-25
I have owned a 4-quart Romertopf for a few years and wanted a cookbook to try things beyond my current self concocted recipes for turkey parts and duck. The title of this book sounded very promising, but if I had looked through this book in a bookstore, I would not have gotten it.
Some of the recipes are nice, but could just as, actually more, easily be made using regular baking dishes than clay pots. I was looking for a cookbook where using a clay pot made a difference in the final product--and this book is not it.
As two examples out of many I could use:
1. Braised Red Cabbage with Cranberries - All the clay pot does is provide a covered dish for the final cooking. Prep cooking is done in a frying pan. One could just as easily make this dish completely in the frying pan, covering it until done, or use any covered container one already has and finish it in the oven.
2. Banana Bread Pudding - Calls for use of a cazuela, a Spanish, clay pot that looks like a high sided pie pan. The cazuela is not necessary for this dish to be made. Any similar shaped, metal or glass, baking dish could be used.
Whether one likes lamb or not, the recipe for Gigot of Lamb with Garlic is one of the few recipes in this little book that is probably much nicer made in a Romertopf (or other covered clay pot) than in a normal covered roasting pan.
The most frequently called for Romertopf size is 3-quart.
Easy Entertaining.......2001-03-28
I love to cook and I love to try new recipes. The recipes are easy to understand and once the meal is in the oven you can forget it until time to dish-up. Sesame Chicken is sensational! A great book for anyone who doesn't mind spending a little time getting the ingredients together.
