The potters Tale.......2002-08-19
The story revolves around Guarnaccia's gradual unravelling of a decades old feud and it's tragic echo in the present.
As ever with Ms. Nabb the story is told with wit and compassion , there are no car chases ( there is a bus ride in the rain ), no shoot-outs ( in 20 years Guarnaccia's Beretta has remained firmly in it's holster ) and no lack of compellingly drawn believable characters.Yet again the atmosphere of Florence is brought out ( apparently ) efortlessly and adds enormously to the success of the book.
These are among the finest ctime novels to be written in the last 25 years.

It's All About Power
Steve Schnabel , and Darrell Graf Manufacturer: M.P.D. Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0942323319 |
Book Description
On February 13, 1983, the US Marshals Service was summoned to the small North Dakota town of Medina to arrest a man by the name of Gordon Kahl, a known tax protester and former member of the Posse Comitatus. The marshals had an arrest warrant for Kahl and were notified that he was in Medina by Stutsman County Deputy Sheriff Brad Kapp. On a recent television program about how the power of the IRS is getting out of hand, assuming people are guilty until they prove their innocence, the show used a lead in of a picture of a wanted poster of Gordon Kahl announcing, "It all started with this man". The Medina shoot-out between Gordon Kahl and US Marshals was the first stop on a dangerous trail, which has lead to Ruby Ridge, Waco and Oklahoma City. Darrell Graf and Steve Schnabel were both members of the Medina Police Department, Graf being the Chief and Schnabel the Colonel. After finding out that the marshals were on their way to Medina, Graf and Schnabel did some quick planning and gathered members of the ambulance squad and rescue squad at the fire hall to prepare for what they thought could be a bloody shoot-out. Kahl had stated on several previous occasions that he would not go back to prison-he would go down fighting and take at least two enemies with him. The marshals arrived at Medina and eventually cornered Kahl just north of town by a small farmstead. Kahl had his wife Joan and son Yorie with him, as well as friends Scott Faul, David Broer and Vernon Wegner. After nine minutes of shouting back and forth to one another, a shot rang out and one of the marshals was fatally wounded. There was a short pause and then a hail of gunfire, which lasted 20-30 seconds. When the smoke cleared two marshals were dead, one marshal critically wounded and two local officers wounded. Kahl escaped under a heavy veil of fog that evening, eventually making his way to the state of Arkansas. Steve Schnabel was one of the local officers wounded in the gun battle and Darrell Graf was on the other side of the hill blocking traffic from entering the scene and coordinating the ambulance and rescue squads to positions for immediate response if needed. On June 3, 1983 law enforcement caught up with Kahl in Smithville, AR where he was hold up. They surrounded the house he was in and a barrage of gunfire ensued. The house was set on fire and virtually everything inside was destroyed, including the body of a man they believed to be Gordon Kahl. County Sheriff Gene Matthews was also killed during the shooting, but it is still unclear just when and where he received the fatal gunshot wound. Graf and Schnabel, former Medina police officers, have teamed together to write a book entitled IT'S ALL ABOUT POWER. The authors'unique perspective of the case as they were there when it all happened. Their knowledge of events, which took place before during and after the shoot-out at Medina, make for a shocking, truthful look at just what happened in Medina that day. The authors also detail the blunder made by law enforcement in Arkansas during their attempt to bring Kahl to justice for what he had done in North Dakota. There were two people killed in Arkansas that day and not one police photograph or police report to go with it. No evidence gathered save a burned body and a burned rifle from the house.IT'S ALL ABOUT POWER was published by the authors so the end result would be a true and accurate account of events that is easy reading and filled with facts, designed to let the reader make up his or her own mind about the case(s). The authors had no asses to kiss and no political agenda to push, only a true story to tell that the public has been thirsting for.
IT'S ALL ABOUT POWER also touches on the human side of the aftermath. The authors bear their souls to let the chips fall where they may to show what a critical part Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) had to play in regard to events after the shoot-out, up to present day. This 20-30 second event in the lives of the authors has changed their lives forever! Many questions that have been asked over the last 16 years are answered in this book such as is Kahl really dead? Was the arrest warrant the marshals had in Medina that day a valid warrant? Did the marshals "ambush" Kahl at Medina? Did Graf and Schnabel help Kahl escape? Did Graf and Schnabel set Kahl up for an "ambush"?
IT'S ALL ABOUT POWER also paints a more accurate picture of just what kind of man Gordon Kahl was and why he held the views he did about guns, taxes and the Constitution of the United States.
IT'S ALL ABOUT POWER is a true and accurate account of the events and facts as we know them. We invite the readers to draw their own conclusions.

Mediocre effort at best of an important law enforcement event.......2006-04-17

This is a lousy book! Period............2002-11-01
A Fascinating and Factual Read.......2002-03-21
Critics of the book may point to minor flaws such as allegations of ...covering by the authors. I do not find such flaws nearly as credible as the book. Both Graf and Schnabel were professionals who were cooperative and did more than they were asked. Yes, their small-town police departments was organized like (surprise!) a small-town police department. And, yes, their account is factual, direct and down-to-earth, not full of socialogical [stuff] like Bitter Harvest, the first major book on the incident.
Neither author is apt to get rich on the book as it tells neither side exactly what they want to hear. Accordingly, the only fans of the book are likely to be those interested in just the unvarnishied, unfiltered facts from two police officers who did the best job they could with the tools available and are probably the only ones who conducted themselves properly thoughout all the events leading up to this incident and the aftermath thereof.
In short, if you believe your government is always right and never lies, skip this book because it will shatter your dreams. Skip it also if you believe the tax protest fringe is always the unfortunate victims of a government conspiracy. However, if you believe the truth lies somewhere between, you owe it to yourself to get and read this book.

The Legend That Was Earth

Book Description
EARTH FIRST! TERRA FOR TERRANS!
They've eased our problems. They've raised our standards of living. Their science has shown us that everything we thought we knew about the universe was wrong. And now the alien Hyadeans' high-tech gifts and their flair for social order promise to make a paradise of planet Earth.
To us, the Hyadeans seem a model of efficiency and clear thinking. But in Hyadean eyes, Earth's culture wallows in imagination and dreams, artforms and concepts which would never have occurred to a citizen of their world. To some of the aliens, this demonstrates Earth's backwardness; others are increasingly fascinated by us.
But when a political assassination plunges his life into chaos, wealthy socialite and "fixer" Roland Cade discovers the dark underbelly of the alien presence. Our government obeys them. Our economy serves their wealthy masters. And the CounterAction "terrorists" on the news are truly fighting for freedom for Terrans and Hyadeans alike -- and one of them is his ex-wife.
Soon Cade is caught up in a terrifying adventure that will take him around the globe, and a conflict that will threaten to destroy the world as it turns American against American -- and Hyadean against Hyadean. Cade will find friends in unexpected places, among the agents of CounterAction, and among the aliens themselves. But he will also face deadly enemies closer than he ever could have feared....

Writer shoves social commentary down my throat. Film at 11........2002-01-23
What I liked:
1) Cover art was ok.
2) Hmmmmm....
What I did not like:
1) Book seemed sketchy.
2) Book was carrier for author's latest left-wing socio-economic-political ideals. And it shows.
3) Book preached author's ideals over and over and over and over......(ad nauseum).
4) Author's use of limited omniscience is inconsistent and leaves threads dangling by end of book. (Please do NOT interpret this as a request for a sequel!)
I don't read fantasy or science-fiction with the yearning desire to know the author's every ill-conceived opinion about how governments stink and oppress the masses.
Keep it to yourself, James.
Not much of a science fiction novel........2001-11-23
"The Legend that was Earth" does have space aliens but they really are just another class of people in this novel. There are a few futuristic ideas that are interesting but not many. This is really just another would be political adventure novel. I don't recommend it for science fiction fans.
A refreshingly enjoyable story.......2001-10-03
As a long-time fan of James Hogan, I pounced on the paperback edition of "The Legend That Was Earth" the day it came out. Forewarned by the negative reviews posted on this site to date, I didn't get my hopes up too much. But I needn't have worried. While the book admittedly isn't among Hogan's greatest, it was still very hard for me to put down. I devoured it within a single 36-hour period.
The story starts out a little slowly. Wealthy socialite Roland Cade leads a comfortable existence as a "fixer", a man who knows how to get Terrans and Hyadeans together to trade often-illicit goods and services. He's the man to see if, say, an off-worlder is interested in procuring exotic Navajo sand art for shipment back to the home world, where everything is utilitarian, drab and grey. He knows how to "go with the flow," not worrying about the Big Picture. He organizes cocktail parties filled with shallow people making insipid conversation. Their phraseology feels stilted, wooden, unnatural. People just don't talk like that in the real world! Are the naysayers right? Has Mr. Hogan lost his edge???
It was enough to really get on my nerves. But not to worry: a few chapters in, Roland gets a rude wakeup call when he comes across his ex-wife, who works for an armed resistance movement. It doesn't take him long to discover the dark side of the alien presence, as his life is turned upside-down. He falls in with people who have a genuine purpose to their lives. They talk like normal people. And he and his new-found friends discover that it isn't a strict conflict between Terrans and Hyadeans. There are "good" and "bad" people on both sides. Who will prevail?
Granted, the themes Mr. Hogan explores are familiar territory for those who, like me, have read most of his works. He is very much a proponent of Libertarianism. At least one of the villains in Hogan books always manages to self-destruct in a spectacularly creative way. The bad guys are into big-time feudalism, and they'll stop at nothing to get their way. The end is somewhat predictable. But that's OK by me: in this crazy, mixed-up world, "predictable" has its appeal. Do we really want the bad guys to win? Just this once?
Picture "Legend" as mental comfort food. Do you complain because you've eaten chocolate a thousand times before?
As has become Mr. Hogan's custom in recent novels, he explores exotic scientific theories. In the case of "Legend", it is the Hyadeans who believe in the Many Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, Catastrophism and alternatives to Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Between several of the chapters are little italicized sections describing the theories and their implications. They're not, for the most part, central to the plot, but they make for fun reading. Whether or not they're valid theories I leave to the scientists to hash out.
All in all, I don't regret spending the money on this book. Serious Hogan fans should give this one a chance.
Fiction, with aliens thrown in.......2001-01-10
However, The science fiction is ancillary to the story. Hogan wrote a story of intrigue and suspense. The Hyadeans did not have be aliens for the book to work because the plot doesn't hinge on the alien issue. Rather, the book focuses on development of the action caused by conflict in cultures.
The story reminds me a lot of a Robert Ludlum plot. Cade is the reluctant hero who experiences a life changing paradigm shift. He is thrown into a world of conflict that he refused to beleive existed. Hogan stresses his development, not the alien presence, to create his plotline. The characterization is well thought out and developed. However, the ending is somewhat predictable and contrived.
All in all, it's an enjoyable and easy read.
The Legend that was Earth.......2000-12-10
I got all the way throught to the last 30 pages and quit reading the novel. I could not take it any more. I purchase Sci-Fi by authors. I may try Hogan again but I think that I will check the ratings before I do.

Simple Vegetarian Pleasures

It would appear that the idea underlying Simple Vegetarian Pleasures is vegetarian food that doesn't require a great deal of labor to deliver big flavors--"simple" as in "not too much trouble." Lemlin also alludes to the simplicity movement, where simple means cutting back to what's really important, gaining both time and quality of life. If one has actually embraced the simplicity movement and has the time and ambience, it remains unclear why there's so little time available to give to the preparation and eating of food, one of the more important elements of daily life.Ignoring all the simplicity stuff, however, leaves the cook with a cookbook filled with recipes pulling on the flavors of all corners of the world. Fill your pantry according to the master plan, shop wisely, plan ahead, and have at it. This is vegetarian cooking of a sophisticated kitchen and palate (using "sophisticated" in the title would presumably scare off anyone not inclined to struggle with food). Many of the recipes could fall out of cookbooks of various ethnic origins where a mainly vegetarian diet is the rule rather than the exception.
What this book really helps us do is move beyond the notion of vegetarianism as just so much brown rice, ragg socks, hairy legs, and save the whales. That is, Simple Vegetarian Pleasures moves right to the heart of cuisine, of food with soul, and makes the absence of meat an insignificant thing. It's that simple.
Ultimately, that it is simple, and that it is vegetarian, means a lot less than that it is exceedingly pleasurable. Enjoy these lush recipes. --Schuyler Ingle
