Her first big catering gig in weeks has Goldy Bear Schulz salivating. But before she can collect her Elizabethan-inspired recipes (Queen of Scots Shortbread, Damson-in-Distress Plum Tart) and hie herself to the restored English castle in Colorado where she's putting on a donor's luncheon in Hyde Chapel and a high school fencing banquet in the castle's Great Room, someone blows a hole in her living room window. No sooner has she unloaded her pots and pans at the catering venue than another someone--or maybe the same one--shoots a hole in her detective husband, Tom. To make matters worse, Goldy's ex-husband has just been released from jail, and he seems to have a few reasons to want to kill her, too.
Between trying to solve the riddle of the castle ghost, keep her son Arch and her wounded husband safe, and get the food on the table while it's still hot, Goldy is up to her elbows in trouble. The would-be lord of the manor still looks like a business-builder for Goldy, but his Swiss-born wife seems a little wacky. And even from a sickbed, Tom's got a crime wave on his hands that seems to involve Goldy's ex, his flashy new girlfriend, the castle owner, and the dead man Goldy found floating in the castle moat. Not to mention a woman Tom once loved, who seems to have returned from the dead and is causing Goldy no end of distress. But Diane Mott Davidson's gutsy, multitalented series heroine (Prime Cut, Tough Cookie) triumphs again--the proof is in the reading as well as the eating in this fast-paced, frothy dessert. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Celebrated for her unique blend of first-class suspense and five-star fare, Diane Mott Davidson has won scores of fans and earned a place on major bestseller lists across the country. Now she dishes up another dangerously tasty treat of murder and mystery.
For Colorado caterer Goldy Schulz, accepting a series of bookings at Hyde Castle is like a dream come true. It’s not every day that she gets to cook authentic Elizabethan fare--especially at a real castle that was brought over from England and reassembled stone by stone in Aspen Meadow. Goldy is determined that everything will go right--which is why, she figures later, everything went terribly wrong. It begins when a shotgun blast shatters her window. Then Goldy discovers a body lying in a nearby creek. And when shots ring out for the second time that day, someone Goldy loves is in the line of fire. Suddenly the last thing Goldy wants to think about is Shakespeare’s Steak Pie, 911 Chocolate Emergency Cookies, or Damson-in-Distress Plum Tart. Could one of her husband Tom’s police investigations have triggered a murder? Or was her violent, recently paroled ex responsible? With death peering around every corner, Goldy needs to cook up some crime-solving solutions--before the only dish that’s left on her menu is murder.

Murder Mystery.......2007-05-12
Love these books, enjoyed each one, purchased and read all to date. Arrived promptly.
I'm a new fan.......2007-04-24
This was my first book of Ms Davidson's books and I realy enjoyed it.
I've read a few mysteries with recipes and they had all fallen short, so this book was a pleasant surprise.
There was a lot going on in this book, but i believe the author did a good job and keeping it all straight for the reader. The characters and events were interesting and I hated to have to put it down for wont to know what was going to happen.
Goldie is an intersting character, and, as others have commented on her actions not being rational or perfect, I have to say that its nice to have a character that is REAL. People do and say stupid things or things that may not be very smart, but hat is human nature. So I appreciated the characters and their faults.
The story and the cooking information were nicely intertwined and all the food talk tortured me wonderfully. I Especialy liked the story setting in a castle with all the necessary history and the historicaly based foods.
I highly recomend this books for a good fun read that tantalizes your appetite for cuisine, history, and suspensefull mystery.
My reason for withholding the 5th star was merely a matter of wishing that there was just a little more action description in the final chapter to explain the culprit's ID and reasons. THe way it was done was ok, but it could have been better done. Nonetheless, this is a great book.
So dear Reader, I highly recommend this book. Proceed with your order and enjoy! (I certainly did and look forward to recieveing my copies of all the books in this series, to read in order now).
Recipe for disaster.......2006-11-27
I don't expect a lot from Diane Mott Davidson's books. I'm happy with a light read with some interesting characters. But this book was a big disappointment. Some of the behaviors & plotlines were extremely unrealistic and poorly developed. And Goldy's behavior was inexplicable and irresponsible. As a result, she just wasn't very likable. And that's a key component with this series. There were also too many questions left at the story's unrealistic & problematic ending. If this were a recipe, the chef skipped a few steps, used the wrong seasoning, and microwaved the resulting mess.
Jolly good fun!.......2006-10-15
Caterer Goldy Schultz has a propensity for cooking delicious treats, but also a tendency to encounter dangerous felons, dead bodies and dodge bullets. Although she is married to a policeman, Goldy endures her share of threats and risky situations. In this episode she has to decamp to a castle transplanted from Europe to Aspen Colorado because the front window of her home has had a firearm discharged into it, shattering the glass and the peace of her family.
Goldy wants to find out who did it, but also wants to keep a prestigious catering job re-creating the cuisine of Elizabethan England. Her supportive friends and family help her keep it together while she caters, dodges death threats and does some amateur sleuthing. She must also investigate a mysterious woman from her husbands past.
While the mysteries are somewhat improbable, Goldy's character is well outlined, gutsy and believable. Mott creates a fun story-line along with some tasty sounding recipes that keep you reading--and hungry! Enjoyable escape reading.
Entertaining, but not her best novel.......2006-08-05
I've read several of Diane Mott Davidson's books and this one was not my favorite. However, I still enjoyed it and will continue to read more. It seems like Goldy gets hurt in most of her stories and she's certainly got a lot more energy than I do. I'd probably go to the hospital, but she continues on cooking for therapy. The castle and it's inhabitants are very strange, but the story does keep your interest.

Eight Cassettes/10.5 Hours....Diane Mott Davidsons New York Times best-selling novels are gourmet fare for mystery lovers. Recipes for such delicacies as "911 Chocolate Emergency Cookies" and "Damson-in-Distress Plum Tart" make Sticks & Scones especially delightful. Catering Elizabethan fare to Aspen Meadows elite at an authentic castle brought from England is a dream come true for Goldy. But the day of the luncheon, Goldy is rudely awakened by a shotgun blast through her living room window. As the day goes on, she finds a murder victim floating in a stream on castle property, watches someone close to her get shot, and begins to see the ghost that haunts the castle. Instead of a welcome opportunity, this job has suddenly become a waking nightmare. Award-winning narrator Barbara Rosenblat adds an exciting zest to Goldys misadventures. Listeners go wide-eyed and willingly into a mystery that builds suspense to the last page.

Castles, Ghosts, and Murder.......2006-03-12
As usual, Goldy Schulz, caterer cum sleuth, manages to solve the murder while producing sumptuous feasts, this time in a castle, battling her ex-husband, protecting her teenage son, and agonizing over the return of her husband's old girlfriend. She manages to adroitly leap from one crisis to another, accomplishing more in a day than most people do in a month. The action never stops. I also liked the sub-plot theme of trust in relationships.
Narrator Barbara Rosenblat brings the story alive with her amazing range of voices. It fascinates me that she can actually sound like a man as well as a child. I've also enjoyed Ms. Rosenblat's renditions of Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon park ranger mysteries and, amazingly, in Elizabeth Peter's intriguing Egyptologist mysteries, Rosenblat tells the story in an English accent.

Under the light of the blue star-- stories by MZB........2005-07-05
Lythande is a series of stories written by Bradley both for and under the inspiration of the Thieves World series. The mysterious magician Lythande was created as one of the sorcerers in the original Thieves World cast of characters. She is a mysterious entity, committed to the cause of order and doomed to never reveal her identity as a woman.
Essentially, Bradley only contributed to the first volume of Thieves World, but the Lythande character lived on after that introduction. This volume contains not only the story from Volume 1 but also contains stories pubished elsewhere as stand alone fantasy stories. The last short story in the collection, "Satan", is actually written by Vonda N. Mcintyre for Thieves World and uses the Lythande character.
For established MZB fans, the forewords she wrote for each story are almost as good to read as the stories themselves. These are almost little essays that explain the evolution of Lythande and summarize Bradley's thinking on issues as diverse as feminism, mediocrity and humor.
If you are a fan of Thieves World, but are not familiar with Bradley, these stories should serve as a good introduction to her work. If you have read neither Thieves World nor any other Bradley, then I would begin elsewhere-- either with Volume 1 or with the Darkover series, respectively. These are enjoyable stories, but they do not really compare to the major body of work associated with either source.
Wandering the world until doomsday.......2002-03-17
This volume contains all the Lythande stories written up to its publication; two more can be found in SPELL SINGERS, an anthology attributed to "Alan Bard Newcomer", but not here. Lythande also appeared as a supporting character in stories written by other authors in Thieves' World; those collected in this volume feature the Adept as protagonist.
Lythande is a mercenary magician; specifically, a Pilgrim Adept of the Order of the Blue Star. The Pilgrim Adepts are sworn to fight in the last battle, on the side of Law against Chaos, at the end of the world. Until that day, they wander, gathering knowledge and power as they will (hence 'Pilgrim' Adepts). The power of a Pilgrim Adept depends on keeping certain vows (e.g. never to eat or drink in front of men), but most of all, upon keeping a secret, specific to each adept. If that secret is ever spoken aloud by any man save the Master of the Star, it (and the magic bound into it) become void, so that the powerless adept becomes worthless to the order - and may be killed by anyone who pleases.
Lythande has chosen to uphold Law against Chaos always, but others have chosen to wait until the last day. The Adept was developed for the Thieves' World series, and is a special crony of Myrtis (the madam of the Aphrodisia House in Sanctuary). The vows of an Adept are extremely literal, so that Adepts can have *female* confidantes if they wish - and if they can find women to trust with their lives.
Check out the Magic in Ithkar series as well; Lythande has visited the fair occasionally.
"The Secret of the Blue Star" - Lythande comes to the rescue of an amazingly beautiful prostitute being roughed up in the street - only to find that Bercy's tormentor is Rabben the Half-Handed, the Adept's worst enemy in the order. But is the girl really a victim, or a spy set to ferret out the Secret - or both?
"The Incompetent Magician" - First appeared in the _Greyhaven_ anthology. Rastafyre the - ahem - Incomparable has lost his wand, to a master thief and magician he cuckolded. Lythande agrees to retrieve it, in exchange for an enchanted lute - to which is bound the soul of Koira, a woman Lythande once loved.
"Sea Wrack" - The seaside village has to rely on half-grown girls to work the fishing boats, because a mermaid has taken up residence nearby, and lures not only men, but grown women to their deaths (only those too young to have felt the tides of the heart are safe). Lythande, feeling secure in having cast off all such emotions, takes up the village's plea to deal with the mermaid...
"Somebody Else's Magic" - Lythande comes to the aid of a priestess of Larith, set upon by thugs in the street. Dying, the Laritha passes on her sword to Lythande in thanks. Unfortunately, the sword has a mind of its own: to avenge its bearer, then force Lythande to carry it back to the Temple - which only women may seek and return alive.
"The Wandering Lute" - As a younger son, the minstrel had gladly accepted the enchanted lute from his father's magician, with its compulsion to follow a migration as regular as the seasons. Now that his older brother has died, though, he must be free of it and return home. Lythande, who'd like a good lute (and who studied a LOT about unbinding spells after the Larith incident) takes it on, intending to disenchant it along the way. Pride goeth before a fall...
"Looking for Satan" - Satan is actually just the name of a wild youngster, caught in a trap and vanished into the empire of Sanctuary. His friends have come looking for him, and Lythande feels moved to help them. (This story, unlike the others, doesn't follow Lythande's viewpoint, but one of Satan's friends, a woman after Lythande's own heart.)
A Magickal, Gender-Bending Fantasy, written by a Legend.......2000-10-09
I suppose this means that my copy is a Collector's Item, now. Sigh....why are all of my favorites out of print? I wanted to do a review for the Thieves' World (Sanctuary) series, only to find them "out of print." I thought, "well, Marion Zimmer Bradley is a LEGEND....I'll review 'Lythande,' instead." I'm glad I take such excellent care of my books and refuse to loan them out to anyone I do not have a meaningful connection with.... I'll be saving my copy of Lythande for my future daughter, Melita Renae Lincoln. This makes me realize how important my little library is! Well...if you can acquire this compilation of stories about Lythande (Lee-THOND), you will be captivated by this character, who was born in a world that has been nearly forgotten, and was created by a woman who will not ever be forgotten. This one is not your typical hack 'n slash, Mazes 'n Monsters fare....in fact, the stories are intellectually stimulating and carry underlying layers of the writer's sentiments. Marion Zimmer Bradley also editorializes a bit, expressing her personal views about Feminism, Male Weirdness and such. As I said, I'm saving this one for my future daughter.
An UNFORGETTABLE Sorcerer and Woman from an AMAZING Writer.......2000-04-27
i will always cherish this book, which i discovered in canberra. mzbradley had created an unforgettable sorcerer. i wish she could have written more books on the sorcerer's journeys before she passed away. mz's death is a great loss to both the science fiction and fantasy worlds. i strongly recommend this book. read it, feel the magic and remember marion zimmer bradley...forever..

Customer Reviews:
Great introduction to Thai cooking.......2006-08-18
I'm learning to cook Thai, so I don't always have to buy it. This book is a great way to learn about the special ingredients as well as some super recipes. The only negative is that the steps are probably more complicated than they need to be for someone who already knows how to cook. I would streamline the instructions and it would seem less daunting.
my favorite book on Thai cooking.......2005-07-30
I have been using this book for about a year now and have used many of the recipes. The results beat any Thai restaurant. Do not be frightened by the long lists of ingredients, as they are not hard and the recipes are very clear.
Simply Thai Cooking.......2004-05-30
I just got this book and I'm very disappointed; even thought, I haven't prepared a thing. There is some picture but it doesn't reference the name of the food that's in the picture. How do I suppose to know the recipes of the food that's in the picture? For most of the pages, it doesn't have a picture of the food....it only recipes. I don't know how the food will be taste like or looks like? If there's a picture, you would say that's looks good but there's no picture. There are millions of recipes, do we suppose to know what's good or not; without providing a picture or sampling it? When a food looks good, people will try to prepare it. If you not a Thai, then you will be very disappointed because you'll not know what your food looks like when you try to prepare it.
Straightforward approach to Thai cuisine.......2003-06-09
This is one of the first Thai cookbooks I purchased. Since then I have purchased several others, but I keep coming back to this one as my starting point for creating an Asian menu. As most other reviewers have stated, the directions are clear and the ingredient list is manageable. Young offers some helpful tips along the way to make it easier.
Some of the humor sprinkled throughout the book is an unexpected surprise. I love the spicy chile sauce recipe where the last step is "call the fire department". There could be more photos in my opinion, but that is not a major issue.
All in all a good investment is you want to learn how to cook Thai food. And if you are like me, living in an area that is devoid of closeby Thai restaurants, it is a necessity for those of us who need our Thai "fix" on a regular basis.
