5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-06-11

All of Nancy Martin's books are fun, fast and easy reads. They are entertaining, will make you laugh, and great summer books for relaxing. It is enjoyable to try to figure out Who Done It. Great characters.
Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Lethally Lovely!.......2007-03-22

The book was in perfect condition and I was happy to add it to my collection of the Blackbird Sisters Mystery. These are a must read for those of you who enjoy a lighthearted mystery.

3 out of 5 stars Philadelphia society murder.......2006-11-07

Nora Blackbird and her two sisters Libby and Emma are from a blue-blood, Philadelphia, upper-crust family. Unforunately their parents squandered the family fortune and left Nora with a large, but crumbling home and lots of debt. To offset some of her bills, Nora writes society
articles for a local newspaper. While attending a fox hunt, Nora discovers that Rush Strawcutter was killed and her sister Emma was near him when he died. Emma becomes the #1 Suspect and Nora sets out to exonerate her sister. There are some amusing moments in the book, but basically the plot seems to be a murder investigation strung together with parties and other social events which Nora covers for her newspaper. This gets to be a little tedious after awhile and does not really justify 310 pages of reading. Also, Nora's dog Spike is not as funny as he needs to be in order to break the tedium of the rest of the book.

4 out of 5 stars A great romp- if a bit mindless.......2005-09-13

I really enjoyed the first book in the series and found this one even better. A lot of fun, a good mystery, classic clothing, and some sex. Good escapist reading.

4 out of 5 stars Nora Blackbird is back on the case..........2005-05-17

...In the best Blackbird sisters mystery yet! In `SOME LIKE IT LETHAL' Nora is forced to use her vast social connections and handy newspaper credentials to investigate a murder that hits close to home. When Rush Strawcutter, husband to the heir of the Strawcutter dog food fortune, is found murdered Nora's sister Emma is the prime suspect. Now Nora must figure out who the real killer is and how it is connected to a plot to blackmail many of Philadelphia's most prominent figures...including herself.

Not only does Nora have to fend off a smarmy blackmailer and try to figure out how to get her sister, who has fled the police with the aid of Michael Abruzzo (Nora's boyfriend), off the hook, but since sister Libby has decided to become a goddess after the birth of her fifth child she also has to watch over her five unruly children. If all of this weren't enough Nora is also worried about the money laundering charges that could be brought against Michael! Needless to say Nora experiences quite a few fainting spells in this third installment of the series. This series keeps getting better with each installment and I cannot wait to get my hands on the fourth `CROSS YOUR HEART AND HOPE TO DIE' where it seems Kitty will finally get her just deserts. 4 ½ stars for the third book in this amusing series!

    Book Description

The vampire Lucita is a prisoner to the fanatical monsters of the Sabbat, who are forcing her to hunt for a hidden enemy and powerful shadow-caster. Every night in captivity further erodes her soul and enslaves her to the sect born of the murder of the tyrannical progenitor of Clan Lasombra.

But soon enough, these concerns fade before the mounting evidence that the enemy they all face is no mad ritualist or lone elder. The shadows whisper words of doom: if this is the final night, it will last forever.

    Lasombra returns.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars A good start.......2003-12-15

This book tells us where Lucita goes after the assassination of her sire in Clannovel: Assamite. After centuries of thwarting the "old bastard's" schemes she suddenly finds herself without a focus, and she knows just how dangerous that is for a vampire of her age. She sets off to meet old acquintances (yes, Fatimah the Assamite is one of them) and gather advice, knowing fully well that without a resolution to her spiritual crisis she will soon be in the claws of the Beast.

Meanwhile, the Sabbat is not so happy with the thought of the rogue who destroyed some of their best and brightest on the East Coast running free. A hunting pack is formed to find Lucita, and we follow them in about half the book.

I have to say, Bishop Andrew and his fellow hunters are sometimes more interesting than Lucita, and you find yourself cheering them on sometimes. Shadows is a good start of a good trilogy.

      Book Description

The powerful second book in this epic series continues the saga of the ferocious Thunderclan. Firepaw has been promoted, and is now Fireheart, a full-fledged warrior cat - but trouble still lurks in the forest. The balance of power between the clans remains fragile, and a fierce battle seems inevitable. In the midst of this turmoil, Fireheart must confront new questions of loyalty and identity, as he faces the possibility of betrayal from within his own clan.

      5 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-10-01

this book is very good. I like all of the characters(except Tigerclaw!), and I like how Bluestar asks Fireheart and Graystripe to find WindClan. The events are very exiting, but I don't get why it's called Fire and Ice. It has nothing to do with the book. This book will have you wanting to read every second of the day!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first.......2007-09-08

*This review will contain brief spoilers*

Volume two of the original Warriors series has the two cats from Thunderclan, Fireheart and Graystripe, on a scouting mission seeking out the missing Windclan cats and their well-known leader Tallstar. While this takes up about maybe a good half of the book, the other half is dedicated to Fireheart and Graystripe recieving their first apprentices to train. While Graystripe is stuck with the calmer Brackenpaw, Fireheart has to make sure spunky Cinderpaw is well watched and behaved. While there is some humor and excitement in this volume, a more intense plot comes out of a corner. It seems that Graystripe has his eyes set on a female from another clan.

While this book really stands to be one of my favorites for this first whole series, I yet found another mistake in the series as well. Apparantly, any damaged cat can no longer be a warrior and is either set to retire early or possibly become a medicine cat. Cinderpaw eventually damages her paw to the point that she can no longer become a warrior and is sent to become a medicine cat. But if that's the case, why is Tallstar's deputy, Deadfoot, a warrior? He has a twisted paw! And he is able to fight on it and everything!

Other than that, it's still one of my favorite books.

4 out of 5 stars Great, Great, Great!!!.......2007-06-04

In this book by Erin Hunter, Firepaw becomes Fireheart and he learns that not everything is how it appears.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice, fire and ice!.......2007-05-09

I think Erin Hunter is a great writer. I love cats, and I think Fire and Ice is a great book. It's funny that in this book, cats think cars are monsters, but I can imagine that my own cats might think like that.

5 out of 5 stars Fire Hunter has always been my favorite book to read.......2006-08-24

This book is an action packed story of a cave man struggling to survive in pre-historic times. The main character is also a bit of an inventer who experiments with spear throwers, bow and arrows, taming wild dogs, etc. This book is a must read for young boys and will help addict them to the joys of reading.

      5 out of 5 stars Fire-Hunter.......2004-05-09

An extraordinary book. When I was a fourth grade teacher I read
it to my class, who loved it. It has a story telling quality and
is hard to put down when you start reading it. The story is
unique in that it shows the beauty of discovering new ways of
doing things -- inventing weapons to survive in an unforgiving
environment. A creative and curious child will love the story.
There's really nothing like it that I know of. Finally, the
concepts and vocabulary make it suited as a read aloud from fourth to sixth grade and as a good read for adults. Don't miss
      out on an outstanding book.

      5 out of 5 stars Love It.......2004-04-12

One of my favorite childhood books. Just read it again flying back from Iceland.

5 out of 5 stars I've Still Got my Copy.......2003-06-21

Yes, this is a real unforgettable classic. I remember my dad reading it when I finished. I would think this would be great for any non-reading kid to get him or her interested in books. The character is a Forest Gump in that he is in on absolutely every invention of the stone-age world. Cool.

      5 out of 5 stars A Builder of Leaders.......2003-02-27

Jim Kjelgaard's portrayal of Hawk overcomming adversity after being ostracized by his peers and then becomming more successful than they, is a lesson for all. To understand it is possible to think and act independently of your cohorts is critical for our youth. The book moves quickly enough for young readers and has lessons enough for adults in an interesting story. By way of testimonial, I am a 48 year old very successful physician raised in an area where more kids from my high school went to jail than college. I credit this book's profound influence on me. It should be mandatory reading for middle schoolers. Thanks to Amazon.com, I'm reading a copy to my kids.

        Book Description

For over 150 years, brave firefighters have battled to preserve the lives and property of the citizens of Oakland. Beginning in 1853, volunteer engine and hook and ladder companies organized and the Oakland Fire Department formed in 1869. Until 1922, teams of magnificent horses pulled steamers belching black smoke and embers, with firemen holding on for dear life. These gallant fire horses were as much firefighters as the rugged men of Oakland who extinguished blazes with leather hoses and brass nozzles. After waging an internal battle of racial integration—a 35-year struggle that began in 1920—the Oakland Fire Department became one of the first in the nation to hire women firefighters beginning in 1980.

4 out of 5 stars SO very simple.......2005-12-15

The recipes in this book contain very few ingredients, which are all common, and they also take very little time to prepare, which is a plus for busy college students. The recipes that make this book worth the buy are: Chickpea Sauce on page 89 (goes over pasta... confession time... I couldn't help myself; I've devoured the sauce without pasta on many occasions. I suggest using a real onion instead of onion powder), Curried Tempeh and Rice Dish pg 95 (hint: add a can of corn and use fried rice for an even tastier experience with even more substance), Curried Chickpeas pg 74 (this is what I cook when I am feeling my laziest. It is delicious and takes no effort).

3 out of 5 stars i was excited, at first........2003-12-26

when i had decided to become vegan, i bought this book. i was excited by the lifestyle change, and bound and determined to begin the quest for animal-free cuisine. i tried some recipies from this book and, to be fair, i will say i haven't tried many (a clue right there - i love to cook) but the ones i did try, let's say, did'nt help make the transition easy. i felt as if i was depriving myself. in fact, i think i was actually crying while i ate one of the dishes out of this book - unsatisfying / no taste/ vomit inducing (was i detoxing, so soon?) is this what vegan fare tastes like? i thought, deprevation? not the book if you care about flavors and passionate cooking.

                    1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2002-11-24

Out of the 224 pages, only 100 pages are (rather large print) recipes. The other pages are basic, common sense information, including the definition of foods like strawberries, etc. Ridiculous! It is more of a nutrition guide than a recipe book. Most of the recipes involve tofu (yuck!). Lots of beverage recipes.

The recipes are simple, I give it 1 star for that, but there's nothing in the book I can't make off the top of my head. Very basic recipes. I wouldn't bother with this book. Get "The Voluptuous Vegan" instead.

4 out of 5 stars Great, and not just for vegans.......2002-09-06

I found this cookbook at a used bookstore (perhaps it was the copy that one of the other reviewers sold?) and it's gotten more use than any of my others. The recipes are simple and quick; most make use of only a small number of ingredients. More importantly for me - a student living alone - very few of the ingredients are overly expensive or exotic, and most appear in more than one recipe. So you won't find yourself with a cupboardful of blackstrap molasses and quinoa wondering what to do with them now that you've cooked the single recipe in your collection that called for them. If you have a decently-stocked pantry and a handful of different fruits and vegetables in the fridge, you'll have no trouble finding several dishes you'll be able to make.

Contrary to what another reviewer wrote, I found most of the recipes to be quite flavourful; those that weren't, could easily be revived by a few extra spices. I did find the desserts to be a bit lacking, however, and have had more success by veganizing familiar recipes from other, non-vegan sources. (A third of a banana for each egg has saved many a cookie recipe of mine!)
