4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

More of the story of Miss Misery is revealed in the third volume of Sleeper. Holden of course can't help himself, and definitely shags her when possible, and is probably developing feelings for her. Her thing is that she needs to cause pain and suffering in others for her to stay alive, and to charge up her superhuman abilities. This makes it a tad hard to form normal attachments and relationships.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars.......2005-11-22

Some of my favorite characters from the first two books were not featured as much in this third one, but otherwise this continues at the high level of rest of the series. Wish the story did not end in Book 4.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best graphic novels out there.......2005-10-18

People go on and on about how great this series is, and the good news is, it completely lives up to the hype. I came to "Sleeper" after reading a few other titles Ed Brubaker had written, notably DC's deliciously revamped "Catwoman" (which is also a lot of fun)... I was skeptical, but I'm glad I took the plunge with "Sleeper," as it is one of the best comicbook stories I've read in a long while.

The action takes place in the WildCATS/Authority/Stormwatch universe, once a comicbook backwater that has recently been revitalized into a gritty and witty superhero noir... "Sleeper" tells the story of a superpowered secret agent, Holden Carver, who is placed undercover by a Machiavellian Nick Fury type to infiltrate a sinister spy network populated with superpowered, super-amoral bad guys. Brubaker uses the character's specific superpowers to flesh out their inner lives -- Carver's power is the ability to absorb any amount of bodily damage and transmute it into pure pain, which he can zap other people with. Meanwhile, he feels no pain himself and is practically unkillable, a situation that leaves him feeling dead inside and increasingly alienated from the true-believer idealism that lead him into military service to begin with. Brubaker borrows from the well-trod genre of spy fiction, but adds an extra layer with the whole superpower thing that is well thought-out and rewarding. Without getting into spoilers, etc., I'll just say that this was one of those rare comic series that I regretted getting to the end of... the world it depicted was so absorbing and textured that I was bummed I knew the story would end with Volume 4... (The entire "Sleeper" story is contained in four slim volumes, plus the prequel, "Point Blank," which sets the stage for "Sleeper" and should definitely be read as well...)

It should be mentioned that this is not a book for little kids: there are many of the same sort of "adult" elements as DC's Vertigo imprint -- semi-graphic sexuality and some extreme violence -- although to his credit, Brubaker includes these elements for a reason, and does it with far less of the "gee-whiz" gratuitousness that has made the Vertigo books become so tedious and repetitive. The sex elements cut to the heart of Carver's character, while the violence is used to show the seriousness of his predicament; they actually deepen the story and move it along and are not included merely to titillate readers or gross us out. That being said, I highly recommend this series.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent as Always.......2005-03-28

This comic is one of the best reviewed that's being published today, and for good reason. This is an excellent comic. The characters are all very interesting, with some of the coolest super powers I have ever seen. Their interactions with one another are interesting and believable. The story is constantly twisting and turning so you're never quite sure who's good and who's bad. Just because this comic has super heroes in it does not mean it's for children. It is very mature and has complex storylines. All in all, If you like crime, secret organizations, superheroes, and mystery, then this comic is for you. If you even like one of those things then this comic is for you. If you like comics then this comic is for you. Am I making my point?

5 out of 5 stars A classic!.......2007-06-28

I originally became acquainted with this magical tale when my son checked it out from the public library about 20 years ago. Both of us fell in love with this wonderfully-told imaginative story, and each of us has gifted it to many young friends and family members over the years. It goes without saying that the illustrations, too, are a delight.

5 out of 5 stars The Life of a Mouse...Sort Of.......2007-03-05

Every time people see Alexander they scream or chase him, but all he wants are a few crumbs. Willy, on the other hand, another mouse, is loved and cuddled and cared for. That's because Willy is a toy, a wind-up mouse.

Well, Willy (the toy) and Alexander (the real mouse) happen to meet and each tell about their lives: a happy one for Willy, a frightening and lonely one for Alexander.

Luckily, he thinks, Alexander finds that with the help of some magic from a lizard he, too, can become a happy and loved wind-up mouse. But just in time something shocking happens to make him change his mind about turning into another Willy: Something happens to Willy. (Suitable for preschool through the primary grades.)

My 4-year-old and I both love this book. Sweet story, but most importantly, the pictures are goregous!

5 out of 5 stars So sweet.......2006-04-21

My son's grandma recently brought this book home from the library and we fell in love with it. It is a sweet and magical story about friendship. It was written in 1969 so I am glad to hear they have reissued it. My son is 3 and just loves it. The illustrations and text are lovely and simple.

5 out of 5 stars Learning self value through selflessness........2006-02-24

It is a timeless story of learning self value through selflessness and the joy that can be created from an act of selflessness. It is a sweet story that can teach children about these positive traits and remind adults not to forget about them in a very stress-driven world. My children love hearing this book read over and over again. And it is a delight to me to keep rereading it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Everyone knows it's Windy.......2004-03-01

Alas poor science books. Forever to be doomed to the non-fiction section of the library where, occasionally, a student will pull one out to help with their school's science project. I've always found children's scientific picture books to be especially depressing little creations. More often than not they're drawn or illustrated in such a way that their messages go out of date, even as their science remains correct. Fortunately for us all, I don't think this will be the fate of "I Face the Wind". True, it's trendy. But it is also such a nice little compilation of facts and experiments that I hope it doesn't disappear too quickly in the unused library shelves for all time.

The book begins with a "Note to the Reader". That reader, as it happens, is actually the adult who will be reading this book with their child. The note implores "readers" to allow their children to first read about the experiments and then find their own results before moving on in the book. This might get a little tedious if the experiments were vast complicated affairs. Fortunately, author Vicki Cobb has limited experiment materials to those objects people already have around their house(tape, wire hangers, etc.). No experiment is dangerous and none of them require adult supervision in any way.

The book is sort of an Intro. to Science for younger children. Kids will enjoy the bright colorful illustrations. Each scene takes place across a pure white background, occasionally dotted by a window or a tree. The pictures will certainly date in 5 to 10 years down the road, but if you want something that will make your kids interested in science NOW, then this is the book for you. And hey, it won the Robert F. Sibert Honor in 2004! If you're brave enough to take a chance introducing your kids to a little well wrought non-fiction, this here's a good starter book for them to consider.

5 out of 5 stars T-Air-rifc!.......2003-06-23

This book is a great introduction to the concept that air is a real thing even though it can't be seen. It has easy experiments that anyone could do at home. The illustrations give life to the experiments and the information. The story does an excellent job of introducing the idea of air as a real thing even though kids can't see it. It touches on the science of molecules. I would recommend this book for preschool clear through elementary. It would be a great starting off point for discussing gases and I would consider it a very early flirtation with chemistry.

4 out of 5 stars A new saga is born.......2006-05-09

I have read the clan wars books and got hooked up with these stories. As the first story of the Wind Saga (i haven't read the prelude yet) it does a great job of introducing the main characters, the time in which this takes place and also the basic interactions between the main characters (based on the clan wars book, I'm guessing each book will tell the story of each one..)

The battles are told very well, the overall atmosphere, the heat of the battle.. i really got into each one.

I like the way it is written, I really got into the story and it captured my imagination. I'm looking foward to reading the rest of the books, my only complain is that it is too short (less than 300 pages) it could have used more story behind some events (like the battle with Totori) but all in all a good read for the series and the base for the rest of the books to take off.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2004-03-29

I really liked this book. I was totally engaged throughout the book. And towards the end I was blown away. It takes on an almost dreamlike quality. Great read, pick it up!

5 out of 5 stars Rokugan lives on!.......2004-03-19

this book is a very good book. it was a good story and had a great sroyline.

5 out of 5 stars And the tradition continues.......2002-09-19

Although the new characters introduced in this new saga continues the series' trend to be interesting and multidimensional, I find myself keep looking for references or a snippet about the characters from the previous saga (The Clan War saga).

I guess I like a complete ending similar to Tolkien's complete family tree style ending to the Lord of the Rings.

But I also understand the need to detach the characters to benefit those who hasn't read the previous saga (what are you guys waiting for? :)

One of the most interesting aspect of the series is the style of telling several stories that focuss on a single event but told from different perspectives. That's one of the thing that kept me reading. I'm glad to report that in this new saga, the style continues with numerous perspectives that starts to emerge with this first book (starts from the preamble by Mr. Bolme).

Ms. Soesbee is one of my favorite writers in the Five Rings universe. Her subtle sense of defiance, flowing narration featuring a show of contrast perspectives continues to delight readers.

I just hate to wait until next year for the next book...

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book!.......2002-09-11

I will admit that I may be biased. I'm familiar with the world of Rokugan from the card game and I've read the previous Clan War series. But like anyone else, I still don't enjoy reading a boring or poorly written story (which often is the case with novels based on games or films). This book continues the strong story-telling and quality writing of Ed Bolme's _The Steel Throne_, which was the first book in this series. It's not necessary to have read any of the earlier books, this story stands alone (although I highly recommend Mr. Bolme's book, anyway). Nor do you have to be familiar with "The Legend of the Five Rings" card game.

This series is about four siblings who are vying for the Throne of Rokugan, a country not too dissimilar to Feudal Japan with its Samurai warriors and codes of Honor. The protagonist here, is Tsudao, the first-born daughter of the Emperor. She is a prodigy at a young age, training hard and becoming one of the best swordsmen in the land. But the road to leadership is a hard one. Even the daughter of the Emperor has to negotiate the earning of trust of those she commands in battle, and battle is the one thing Tsudao knows she excells at. More treacherous is the human heart, the will of the Gods, the loyalty and deceit of those closest too her, the elaborate intrigues of the Court, and the fearsome plans of evil sorcerous powers hoping to conquor the Empire-- all things Tsudao hopes to avoid dealing with. Of course, we know that all these things will be unavoidable! There is a lot of action, epic battles, heart-stopping events, loyal sacrifice, twisted and tempting evil, nasty monsters, hidden courage and much more which help form the rites of passage suitable for a woman of which much is asked and much will be asked in the future. This book should appeal to anyone who likes fantasy adventure, strong female characters and/or has an interest in Asian settings.

4 out of 5 stars Lush Illustrations.......2005-11-24

An effort by these two terrific professionals is bound to have many good qualities. This won a Caldecott honor designation, and rightly so. Pinkney's watercolors are intricate, absorbing, a real pleasure. The multicolored dresses of girls at a dance are especially pretty. I notice he uses two motifs in his books, chickens and quilts. Both are included here.

This book begins with an author's note on the history of the cakewalk in African American culture. The story is based on a photograph of McKissack's grandparents, who won a cakewalk in 1906 before they married. The photo was taken after they won.

Mirandy is longing to win the upcoming cakewalk, but she needs a partner. Her friend, Ezel, might fit the bill but doesn't seem too keen on participating. He teases her that he is going with another girl. Mirandy thinks she will win the contest if she can capture Brother Wind, an imaginary character drawn like a bluish white ghost. His grace and speed are what she thinks it will take to finish first. Of course, Mirandy and Ezel end up together, and win the cakewalk with their sassy moves.

5 out of 5 stars Can the wind be a partner?.......1999-05-29

This children's book, illustrated by Jerry Pinkney, is about a young and joyous African-American girl who hopes to win a prize at a cake walk by capturing the wind as her partner. The story takes place around 1900 and is a beautiful view of a happy people. The book was a 1989 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustrations in a book for children.

4 out of 5 stars Revealing look at women's strength and power.......2007-03-09

Eavesdrop on any group of women lunching at the next table and you are likely to witness laughter, tears, support, commiseration and collaboration in action. Entrepreneur Vickie Milazzo identifies how women can best utilize these natural feminine capabilities to achieve life and career success and fulfillment. Milazzo dedicates an insightful, thorough chapter to each of the "10 Feminine Forces" she has identified. She uses personal stories and the experiences of successful women to coach you to new, unexplored heights. Sometimes her attempt to motivate through her personal saga crosses the line from inspiring to self-congratulatory. Yet, if you set aside this editorial flaw, you have a well-scripted formula for success. We recommend this book to all women who share a spark, a dream and the desire for a richer, fuller life.

4 out of 5 stars Will make you think differently about reaching your goals.......2007-02-15

I've never read a self-help type book before, and probably wouldn't have picked this book out on my own. I recieved a copy of this book through a marketing campaign, and figured that I'd give it a shot.

I usually fly through novels and non-fiction books, so I've had to take a completely diferrent approach to reading this book. I've been plowing through it, one chapter every week or so, and it's been having some impact on how I think about my professional life.

The book is filled with the author's anecdotes as well as stories of other women, and guides you throuh exercises that break down your goals and actions. I'm finding it helpful, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a book to help them understand how to reach their goals.

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2007-02-14

Filled with thought-provoking gems of wisdom and the real-life examples to back them up, I found this book to be a wonderful source of motivation as I think about "what comes next" in my career.

              5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-02-05

At first I wasn't sure that this book was for me, as it focuses on ways women can be successful in business and I had no desire to open my own business. The more I read, though, the more I realized that this book helps women to be successful in everything they do. The strengths and promises Vikki outlines, such as flexibility and integrity, are crucial to success in any area, whether as a mom, a teacher, a corporate employee or a CEO. This book has inspired me to strive for more in my personal and professional life.

              5 out of 5 stars Serving a crowd? Not a problem!.......2007-08-23

by Judy Bart Kancigor, author of Cooking Jewish: 532 Great Recipes from the Rabinowitz Family

              from The Orange County Register
              January 25, 2007

I am not a football fan. My idea of a super bowl is my mother's Val St. Lambert. But I do love a party, so if my centerpiece has to be the TV, hey, think of what I'm saving on flowers!

My Superbowl guest list is growing each day, and I'm getting nervous. Just how much food do I need for a crowd? And then there's the expense. Not to worry. With Denise Vivaldo's cookbook and catering guide "Do It For Less! Parties" I know I can throw a bash that won't stress me out and won't break the bank.

"People are not used to cooking in quantities," said Vivaldo, a classically trained chef and caterer, whose company, Food Fanatics, specializes in recipe development, consulting, and food styling for print, film and television. "It freaks them out to see how much food they've got. Is it enough? It is too much?" This book eliminates the guesswork with recipes given in chart form for 12, 25, 50 or 75 guests. "Remember, the more things you have on the menu, the smaller the portions you need to serve," Vivaldo advised.

But how much will this party cost, I wonder. "When people entertain, they spend a lot of money instead of keeping it simple," Vivaldo noted. "If you're having a lot of people, you don't have to offer a complete bar. Why not make one kind of drink, say Cosmopolitans, and add something non-alcoholic and some water and you've got it."

This seasoned professional, who has catered 10,000 parties (serving the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bette Midler and Prince Charles), reveals her tricks of the trade for everything from planning the menu to napkin folding.

"When we're entertaining, we're all our own harshest critics," she said. "But if someone else has set the table, the simplest meal is divine."

Vivaldo offers nine complete party themes, each with a menu, shopping list, decorating ideas (including invitations, table linens, favors and entertainment), time- and money-saving tips, an equipment list and a menu countdown, so you're not doing everything at the last minute.

"You don't need to spend a lot of money on matching linens," Vivaldo advised. "Look around your house. Everything doesn't have to match. Be creative. You can use a Mexican serape or even $10 sheets from Target. People don't come to your home to see your couch. They come for the company and a glass of wine."

For Superbowl I'll score with the Toscana menu: Classic Caesar Salad, Chilled Penne Pasta with Pesto and Pine Nuts, Italian Meatball Lasagna, Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Sage Butter Sauce, Tiramisu, and Chocolate Almond Biscotti. Touchdown!

Vivaldo's game plan makes it all simple, starting with shopping for non-perishables the week before. I see two days before the game I can prepare the gnocchi dough and biscotti, with the bulk of the cooking the following day. On party day I have only to cook the gnocchi, reheat the lasagna and gnocchi sauce, toss the salad and brew coffee. Then I can relax and enjoy the game. Or you enjoy the game and I'll enjoy you!

"People make themselves crazy when they entertain," Vivaldo reflected. "If you could enjoy yourself more, you would do it more often."

CHILLED PENNE PASTA WITH PESTO AND PINE NUTS
from "Do It For Less! Parties" (Terrace) by Denise Vivaldo

1 1/2 pounds penne pasta (uncooked)
1 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more as needed
              4 cups fresh basil leaves
              1/3 cup walnuts
              4 garlic cloves, peeled
              4 ounces grated Parmesan cheese
              1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
              3/4 cup pine nuts, toasted

              1. Bring a large stockpot of salted water to a rolling boil. Cook pasta in batches until al dente, 8 to 10 minutes, being careful not to overcook. Drain. Drizzle with a little olive oil if needed to keep from sticking.
              2. Process basil leaves, olive oil, walnuts, garlic, Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper with a food processor until mixture forms a coarse paste. Taste and adjust seasonings.
              3. Toss cooked pasta and pesto together in a large mixing bowl (in batches if needed for manageability). Sprinkle with toasted pine nuts.
              3. Cover and chill until ready to serve. Serves 12 (options for 25, 50 and 75 in the book)
