Book Description
Before the sweet delight of Chocolat, before the heady concoction that is Blackberry Wine, and before the tart pleasures of Five Quarters of the Orange, bestselling author Joanne Harris wrote Sleep, Pale Sister -- a gothic tourde-force that recalls the powerfully dark sensibility of her novel Holy Fools.
Originally published in 1994 -- and never before available in the United States -- Sleep, Pale Sister is a hypnotically atmospheric story set in nineteenth century London. When puritanical artist Henry Chester sees delicate child beauty Effie, he makes her his favorite model and, before long, his bride. But Henry, volatile and repressed, is in love with an ideal. Passive, docile, and asexual, the woman he projects onto Effie is far from the woman she really is. And when Effie begins to discover the murderous depths of Henry's hypocrisy, her latent passion will rise to the surface.
Sleep, Pale Sister combines the ethereal beauty of a Pre-Raphaelite painting with a chilling high gothic tale and is a testament to Harris's brimming cornucopia of talents.
This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

Engrossing Fantasy.......2007-06-26
I must say, this was one of the best books I've read in a long time. It starts off like a typical historical novel, but soon the story has you enmeshed with more twists and alternate realities! The story was a true cloud of drug induced confusion, and it is a refreshing change from so many novels published today. Plus, the story line is never predictable. I highly recommend this book!
"I want to keep you innocent. I want to keep you beautiful.".......2007-01-28
What seems at first a man's Svengali-like obsession with a pure young woman and another man's seduction that female proves to be but a part of a clever plot that twists and turns in unexpected ways, producing a darkly gothic ambiance that reeks of menace. At the center of everyone's fascination is the ethereal Effie, a frail girl with streaming white-blonde hair, who becomes the singular model for artist Henry Paul Chester. In the Victorian fashion, Chester makes clear moral distinctions, his life well-ordered and constricted by society's tenets, his considerable dark side kept well-disguised. Many years her senior, Chester marries the unassuming Effie, but struggles to maintain the ideal of purity with his wife, exorcised when she turns to him with passion on their wedding night. Repulsed, Chester believes his wife is tainted, ruined beneath the surface of her innocence. To assuage his own needs, Chester frequents a local bawdy house, where he is consistently drawn to a nubile virgin, Marti, provided by the madam, Fanny Miller.
Determined to maintain the façade he requires for emotional equilibrium, Chester doses his wife liberally with laudanum to assure her compliance with his wishes and shelter her from the outside world. Henry has a showing to introduce his work to the public; into this venue steps a roué, Moses Zachary Harper, who is immediately fascinated by Effie, her shy modesty a drug to his jaded senses. Much to Moses' surprise, his seduction is eagerly embraced, Effie desperate to taste the forbidden fruit he offers, her young life circumscribed by Chester's rigid control. Even Moses is out of his depth, anticipating a short, satisfying dalliance, but pulled into an erotic affair that both exceeds his expectations and frustrates his natural inclination to dominate. Manipulating behind the scenes is Fanny Miller, who has plans of her own for Effie and Moses, among them a long-awaited revenge that will not be denied. Once Effie is introduced to Fannie, the die is cast.
What ensues is a complicated brew of obsession, revenge, guilt and the loss of innocence, all laced with increasing draughts of laudanum and chloral hydrate. While Effie drifts through her days and deceptive nights in a drug-filled fugue, Henry is beset with guilt and increasing paranoia, relieved only by furtive doses of chloral hydrate. Fantasy and reality merge as the final act begins, the tortured souls tearing at one another with artifice and deception. In true gothic fashion, the pages are laced with evil intentions, even Effie unrecognizable in the hands of a master. A pawn to Henry, Moses and Fanny, Effie is the key to all, the coin of a terrible misdeed. Henry, the dark master, is ultimately destroyed by his damaged soul, dissembling to the end to avoid the consequences of his sick and twisted existence. Harris defines the powerful subconscious of her characters, a murky underworld of sexual dysfunction and the callous destruction of a defenseless young woman. In true Victorian fashion, the morality play self-destructs, hurling the protagonists into their just rewards. Luan Gaines/2007.
A Wonderfully Ethereal Novel.......2007-01-06
Effie is a child muse to painter Henry Chester, a religiously devout, yet unpiously checkered man who takes her as his wife and molds her into his pure, innocent, flawless, and unsensual doll of a woman. Growing up in the dysfunctional bubble of Henry's existence, Effie is instructed to quell all creative endeavors, intellectual or otherwise in the name of what is the right and "proper" way for a woman to behave. All the while she is in a laudanum-induced fog forced upon her by her hysteric husband. It is only when Effie is encountered by the sly, womanizing sweet-talker Mose and the sensual, independent Fanny Miller that she begins to realize the extent of her own passion and the extremity of her current, suffocating oppression. Their presence in the novel serves as a catalyst to her escape from her "lap dog" lifestyle and the beginning of her stand against her increasingly unstable husband. Between the painfully growing tension and the mysterious and intriguing laudanum-induced haze, the ambience throughout the novel's course is ethereal, leaving readers feelings as if they too are under the drug's spell.
Didn't like it at all.......2006-07-31
All that one can say about this book is that it's "Gothic". Yeah, right. Here are ghosts, witches, mad wives in the attic, black cats and other mandatory attributes. But probably, "gothic" decorations are not enough for a book, there should be something else. Something that I failed to find. The novel is tedious and empty. A weak attempt to create a thriller rather failed, the plot is hardly glued together, the episodes that are probably supposed to scare remind a bad horror movie that is full of dark rooms, ominous music and crazy screams, but simply does not frighten, period.
I finished the book, but it was a waste of time. If you want a good thriller by Joanne Harris, read her "Gentlemen and players" instead.
A Dreamy Drug of a Book!.......2006-02-11
I bought this book on the advice of a member of my Tarot group. She said that there were several instances of Tarot readings and such. I'm very grateful that she recommended it because it was a fabulous read!
"Sleep, Pale Sister" is a dreamy drug of a book, an ethereally written Gothic sort of ghost story that had me enthralled for several late nights. Magic, Tarot readings and a nice touch of the supernatural add yummy cayenne to this unique story of the wealthy artist, Henry Chester, and his young model, Effie, who becomes his wife at the tender age of 17, although she became his model many years before. Though Henry keeps Effie drugged with laudanum, she manages to find a cad of a lover in Moses Harper, a rival carpetbagger of a painter who introduces Effie to Fannie Miller, the occult madam of a brothel that Henry visits every Thursday. The characters are excellent as is the engaging plot.
I won't give away any more of the plot, but let me just warn you that this book is not for the faint of heart. Try it, you might like it!!!

Enjoyable read....but.......1999-11-06
This is my first novel from this particular writer so I was a bit weary....especially all my vampire reading have been from Anne Rice novels.
This novel I thought was beautifully written and had such great detail. I could clearly see the Kelene's family and could relate to them on many levels. The father and mother to me ver yvery well thoughtout and described, along with the other minor characters. Kelene's character throughout most of the book was rather sad/tragic and interesting.
But one problem I did have with the book was it's treatment of Dracula's and Kelene's relationship. I thought the character of Dracula was well done...he was ominous and tragically sad at the same time, and it left me wanting more about him throughout the book. Iknow this is the first of the series so I will eargly await more info. But for his relationship with Kelene.....during the first couple parts of the book..it was very good...and griping, but towards the end it just became repetitive. During the whole journey to his castle it seems to me that thye were repeating the same scene over and over again. I felt these last couple of chapters could have been cut short.
Overall, I was pleased with this book and look forward to the next installment.
No words.........1999-04-11
I am still reading this book, but I would like it to never end.... Only few books are capable of touching divinity...and here is one.. M.
A promising novella maybe but not a full length book.......1999-03-09
When I first received this book, I looked forward with anticipation to reading it. 20 pages into it, my enthusiasm was dampened mainly by the use of the phrase "Militant Angel" in every other sentence (are there no editors anymore?). However, I thought if I persevered, it was bound to get better and it did for the most part. This book has so much promise, so much potential that is lurking just below the surface, you just want to scream at the author to keep working on it, to reach for those hidden details and fleshed out storylines. As it stands now, "The Angry Angel" could be shortened by a third or more and be a very good novella but as a book it loses some of its punch in the padding. This is probably due to the publisher making a trilogy out of this but I'm going to bet the story of all three "sisters" could be told in one longer book. I will probably check out the next one but from a library before I buy. To summarize, not a bad book but one that disappoints as much as it entertains.
A tedious text........1999-01-19
The promise of this book was great. It was so tedious to get past the first 150 pages that I almost gave up repeatedly. Finally, it improved and Dracula entered the scene. I thought I would scream in the beginning while the book dribbled on about the "militant angels". A little of that went a long way.
Has Yarbro read Stoker's text?.......1998-12-05
While at the 1997 Vampire Con in Los Angeles, I was very interested to learn of Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's pending series Sisters of the Night consisting of three books which would provide voices for Dracula's brides. Yarbro would tell readers how the three brides came to be turned and their stories would be told. I was excited at this prospect despite that I usually dislike such vaults into poetic license (such as Alexandra Ripley's Scarlett: The Sequel to Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind from Mass Market Paperback 1992 and Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea 1996 from W.W. Norton & Company). I find they do not represent the vision of the original text, and, rather, operate in a direct affront to it (namely Marie Kiraly's Mina: the Dracula Story Continues from Mass Market Paperback 1996-who, when I asked her what she did to prepare to write Mina, responded that she simply "thought" and did not even have the respect for Stoker or the character of Mina to read the original text. For shame, Ms. Kiraly! But, as we know, is reflected in the mediocre work that she produced). I had hopes that Yarbro, based on her Saint-Germaine series, would have a bit more panache than other similarly assuming writers.
The first of the series, The Angry Angel (Avon, 1998) is an interesting work. The writing is fantastic, with gorgeous landscapes and interesting characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the Romanian proverbs and quotes Yarboro offered at each chapter opening. However, to cast Dracula as a psychic, sadistic pedophile? Yarbro completely misses her mark in representing Dracula, and instead writes a fetish text with nice scenery. While I come to care about Kelene and her family, I am too distracted by the ill formation of Dracula to much care for the text as an elaboration of Stoker's story. One of the most detracting, annoying plot points that gives Yarbro away as having not truly read the text from where she hopes to leap is that she makes Dracula fatally vulnerable to sunlight. Dear readers, vampires withering into dust when struck by sunlight originated in our collective conscious in 1937 when Mr. Bela Lugosi penetrated to our hearts' darkest corners as The Count to which all others would be compared. Stoker's Dracula, as emulated in Francis Ford Coppola's film representation, does not die when exposed to the sun. Vampires, according to Stoker, merely lose their superhuman powers during the daylight hours (they are weakest at noon and strongest at midnight). Vampires, during the day, are just regular Joes.
As for Kelene as a character, I'm not terribly impressed, either. She is marked as the blond vampire bride, about which Stoker's Jonathan remarks, "I seemed to somehow know her face, and to know it in connection with some dreamy fear, but I could not recollect at the moment how or where" (p. 38, Bantam edition). She is the first female vampire who will approach Jonathon and lick "her lips like an animal" after she finishes gloating over him. I am to believe that Jonathon Harker will find this slip of a woman-child "deliberate[ly] voluptuous"? (p. 39). Are we then to see Harker as the same pedophile Yarbro casts for Dracula? I think not.
Kelene just doesn't measure up and the fair girl who is "the first" and responds to Dracula's threats with "a laugh of ribald coquetry" (p. 40). For as much as I enjoyed the mechanics of Yarbro's text: the striking imagery, the creative mind who provided the "fair girl" a name, a history, a mind, I am even less impresses with Yarbro for sexualizing and erotisizing a pre-pubescent girl. Yuck! I can only hope that for the next two books in the series, that Yarbro actually bothers to read all of Stoker's text and does some forward thinking before writing the tales of the remaining two vamps who require more ritual and fanfare to kill than the Count himself.

Book Description
In Bram Stoker's dark classic Dracula, three "weird sisters," make a brief but unforgettable appearance. The beautiful, mad brides of the vampire lord, their untold histories are at last revealed to us in Sisters of the Night, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's brilliant reimagining of a timeless legend.
In a distant age of brutal chaos, young Kelene is her family's salvation. An exquisite, golden-haired child just entering womanhood's embrace, she is blessed-and cursed-with a great gift. For most of her fourteen years, God's "Militant Angels" have guided her, shielding Kelene, her parents, her brothers and sisters from the horror and devastation visited upon their neighbors by the bloodthirsty Ottoman hordes.
But suddenly another has invaded her dreams. This angel who speaks to Kelene in the night is far more elusive and demanding than any who came before-filling her with uncertainty and terrors while tempting her with impure thoughts and unholy desires. He will come to her, he vows, in Kelene's darkest hour. And then she will be his...for eternity.
A monumental work of the imagination from an unparalleled storyteller, Sisters of the Night: The Angry Angel is a haunting, erotic, and endlessly enthralling tale of innocent death and corrupted love...and of one extraordinary young woman-the first of three-whom destiny has chosen to be Dracula's consort.
Customer Reviews:
Vampire Fiction at Its Best.......2003-01-20
The Angry Angel is a mesmerizing tale of a young girl's seduction by the original vampire, Count Dracula. It's also a metaphor for a woman's surrender to male sexuality. Even if Chelsea Quinn Yarbro only intended to write a vampire story, the raw sexual symbolism shines through. The highlight of the book is the slave auction, where Dracula claims his "bride." I've read that passage over and over, I just can't get enough of it. I think it resonates with me because while it's degrading and de-humanizing, Kelene ultimately is claimed by her suitor and is allowed to become something she never dreamed of before. It's a metaphor for the kind of self-discovery we sometimes find in sex.
Dracula's "Wives" Explained at Last!.......2001-11-21
Yarbro does an excellent job describing an element of Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' that (to my knowledge) heretofore lacks explanation: the three vampire wives or brides residing in Dracula's castle. 'The Angry Angel' depicts Dracula's acquisition of his blond vampire bride, Kelene. Kelene's journey as she follows Dracula's "calling" is riveting, as she and her family are spared few tragedies.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in vampire fiction and lore, particularly those who appreciate a rather graphic tale (in terms of violence, not sex). This subject was one of the missing links in vampire fiction, and Yarbro has done a fantastic job filling this niche. Her characters are convincing and well-developed, and this book is tightly compelling right up to the very last sentence. After reading this, I am anxious to read Yarbro's books about the other two wives of Dracula.
Brides of Dracula find a voice at last.......2000-06-12
A young girl's gift, visions from her angry angel, protect the family she loves. But with each new vision there is a price to be paid until she finds herself the ultimate sacrifice. The contrast between the worship of God and the corruption of evil was very interesting. The erotic seduction of the young girl was breath taking without being explicit. As usual the historic detail is excellent. This book pulses with passion, action and horror. I couldn't put it down and have now read it three times. It is the best vampire novel in a long time.
Interesting and Entertaining/The Angry Angel.......2000-05-17
Very good book. I found the descriptions of life in the fifteen hundreds very captivating. How a young girls life progresses and then digresses when she becomes Draculas slave is facinating. Well fleshed characters, great plot. I don't feel it is as good as Ann Rices Vampire Series but it is definately worth reading.
wonderfully written with so fascinating detail.......1999-08-07
I felt unfaithful to Anne Rice, however. this book and author is unique to her mostly because of the setting. I'm in awe of different cultures and time periods. She provides both deliciously with her use of such detail. It is difficult to find an author that provides both with a book that you can't put down. The details were so exact that you actually saw Kelene, her family, and of course Dracula and his numerous haunts. If you enjoy an exhilarating novel, then tap into this trilogy. The only complaint I have is that I wish the print was larger mainly because when I'm reading for hours, my eyes tire. This frustrates me because I don't want to go to bed....I want to keep reading. As soon as I finished it, I ordered her next. Read this one, you won't put it down.

A great start for the trilogy.......2000-07-01
I rate very highly any book that teaches me more about myself or makes me question life in some way. The premise of this book, that there is another soul attached to your own in a symbiotic fashion, begs the question "How would I live my life differently than I do now if I knew that someone else was always with me?" On a simpler level, the book provides some interesting characters and good action. Unfortunately, Cary Osborne does not do the characters justice. They are very underdeveloped and leave the reader with too many questions that are not answered here or in the sequels. The potential was here for a great trilogy.
We need more women warriors.......1999-06-29
I always enjoying reading about or seeing a cool woman warrior, kicking butt and not crying because she got bruised or complaining about what ever makes her uncomfortable. Carry Osborne has a nice style in her work it is easy to read and don't get you sidetracked and out of the flow trying to figure out what the words mean that are being used.Carry does a good job of using a common vision of the future as her back drop and incorporating the ancient mystisisum of Japanese Martial Arts. Remeber people Iroshi came out long before Xena. The writers of Xena may have found inspiration in Carry Osborne's Iroshi...
an interesting read, worthwhile.......1998-05-27
the book is well written, with hints of dune and star wars themes included. however the story overall lacks much depth. you get the feeling that you are reading an abbreviated, condensed version of the text. the story is good though and is a good read.
Blah........1998-05-20
Boring, with unoriginal ideas. Unlikable characters, silly, just silly. Grade school reading, just above Bantha Fodder.
One of the best books ever written........1998-04-30
