Book Description
“Now Iceland has its own Mankell.”
---Holger Kreitling, Die Welt (Germany)
Last year Jar City introduced international crime-writing sensation Arnaldur Indridason to rave reviews and a rousing welcome from American thriller fans. And now, Silence of the Grave, the next in this stunning series has won the coveted Golden Dagger Award. Presented by the British Crime Writers' Association, previous winners of this award include John Le Carre, Minette Walters, Henning Mankell, and James Lee Burke.
In Silence of the Grave, a corpse is found on a hill outside the city, and Detective Inspector Erlendur Sveinsson and his team think the body may have been buried for some years.
While Erlendur struggles to hold together the crumbling fragments of his own family, slowly but surely he finds out the truth about another unhappy family. Few people are still alive who can tell the tale, but even secrets taken to the grave cannot remain hidden forever.
Destined to be a classic in the world of crime fiction, Silence of the Grave is one of the most accomplished thrillers in recent years.
Customer Reviews:
reviewers need a reality check.......2007-10-01
This is a police procedural about unearthing bodies in a construction site, but the author does not know police procedures. You do take photographs of the crime scene, you do not move the body until it has been examined by the forensic pathologist (you find one, even if your pathologist is vacationing in Spain), and when you find an important witness, you talk to them until you have all the facts (you do not let them go home to continue the story the next day). The author has violated all procedures--it does not make any sense. First and foremost, a police procedural must stick to reality to be credible. How can you reviewers let the author by with these blunders and give him so many stars?
I read the book to get insight into the Icelandic culture--you will get none of that here. The main character is a grim, despondent, sad character named Erlundur whose ex-wife hates him, and whose children hate him. I think I hate him, too. His daughter is a pregnant drug addict who overdoses, loses the baby, and vegetates in the hospital in a coma while the mystery unfolds--that is one of the parallel stories to the main story of unfolding who is buried at the site.
Where the author does come through is in describing the terror of the wife and family that is being abused by her husband. The abuser really deserves what he gets, and you can guess who lies in the ground fairly early. The story is slow to develop, and there are several narratives going on at once which I think is a clever idea which is carried off, well.
This author needs an editor to help him master his craft. His characters are about as well developed as a cardboard cutout. But there is promise here if he is willing to do the work.
A great sequel to "Jar City".......2007-08-31
I greatly enjoyed reading this sequel to "Jar City!" I am a big fan of Henning Mankell's novels, but it was thrilling to discover Arnaldur Indridason! His writing kept me at the "edge of my seat;" his stories are gripping and also provide psychological depth to his characters. Just as Mankell does with Sweden, Arnaldur gives the reader some insight into Icelandic society.
I can't wait to read Arnaldur's future novels!
Icelanders are like that . . ........2007-07-24
When I first began reading this author's first translated novel, _Jar City,_ I didn't think I was going to enjoy it. Then I got caught up in it and it's stayed in my mind ever since. This second novel featuring the dour, laconic Detective Erlendur Sveinsson of Reykjavik, isn't as gray in tone and texture as the first one, but it's just as unsettling, . . . not unlike an Icelandic saga, in fact. Again like the first book, the plot hinges on a crime committed long ago, revolving this time on the identification of a body found in a foundation excavation in a new housing subdivision. The story shifts between the present day, in which Erlendur has to deal with a university archaeologist who has undertaken to excavate the body (their forensics expert being on vacation in Spain at the moment), and the days of the Allied occupation during the 1940s, when an entire family is living in continual fear of domestic abuse. Because, even though the cover rather erroneously calls this a "thriller," it's really a story about strained family relationships and all the variations that situation can take. Erlendur has a very iffy relationship with his pregnant, drugged-out daughter, and a twenty-year nonspeaking relationship with his ex-wife. One of his detectives is in the middle of a crisis with his live-in girlfriend, who wants commitment. A vicious wife-beater has a sick relationship with everyone in the house. Another possible victim whose body it might be had a series of troubled relationships with fiancé and family. And on and on. Anyone who has read Henning Mankell will see a resemblance in Erlendur to Kurt Wallender. (Maybe it's a Scandinavian thing.) So, don't expect a lot of cop-type action here, but do expect a very well-written novel.
Dark, brooding, and delightful.......2007-01-09
I'm not a big fan of this genre. In fact, the only reason I read this book was because they were available, and I was out of other reading material. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself completely engrossed from start to finish. The characters are all disturbingly flawed; haunted by their own personal demons, yet somehow managing to unravel a long-forgotten series of crimes.
I imagine that crime fiction aficionados would find even more to love in this well-written, thought-provoking story.
ilence Of the Grave.......2007-01-05
This guy can really write. I went back and picked up "Jar City," also very good. Complicated plot that doesn't slow down.

Book Description
Montezuma County Sheriff's detective, Jude Devine doesn't face too many challenges based in remote Paradox Valley, where most of the crime involves hiker assaults, campsite thefts, and cattle rustling. However, when the body of local teenager, Darlene Huntsberger shows up with a stake through her heart and missing her tongue, Jude finds herself leading an investigation no one wants to touch. Darlene was a member of a Utah polygamist cult with powerful allies; a cult that silences women who try to leave. As Jude uncovers the truth about Darlene, and tries to save a young girl from being forced into a marriage, she must decide how much she is willing to risk to see justice done. Further complicating her choices is her torrid entanglement with the golden girl of Southwestern forensic pathology, Dr. Mercy Westmoreland.

Educational.......2006-10-16
Rose Beecham (aka Jennifer Fulton) has another great series going with star FBI agent Jude Devine at the helm.
The plot has to do with dead women being found and the trail leads back to a group of Latter Day Saints living out the role of polygamists without appearing to break the law.
The child abuse and uncaring of the men and women was appalling.
Beecham has written a fine novel.
Of course, there's the underlying notion that maybe, just maybe Jude and Dr. Westmoreland might become an item.
I'm looking forward to the next book.
Great book!
Read It and Read It Again.......2006-08-07
After spending the last few years writing sexy romances as Jennifer Fulton, Fulton aka Rose Beecham has triumphantly returned to penning mysteries. With the award-winning Grave Silence, she mixes facts, surrounding the activities of the Fundamentalist Church of the Latter Day Saints (FLDS), with a riveting murder mystery and crafts a gripping story.
When we first meet Sheriff's Detective Jude Devine, a former FBI agent who has been transferred to a small Colorado town in the Four Corners area, she is unraveling the grisly murder of a young woman left decomposing in a desert wash. The clues to solving this crime take Devine and the reader on an unbelievable journey beyond anything we could have imagined. FLDS is a splinter group not recognized by the Mormon Church that among other things illegally practices polygamy. Beecham deftly weaves a second plot about life on an FLDS ranch into this story. We learn how autocracy and abuse rule the mostly underage girls married to the "master" of the cult, and how silence is used as a survival tool to avoid being punished for disobeying. As the book evolves, these two plots collide forcefully, taking the reader on a compelling adventure with Devine emerging as the silent hero.
After reading this book over eight months ago, this reviewer was haunted by the "facts" of Grave Silence. I wanted to know where the fiction ended, and the truth began. After hearing a talk by Beecham on how she compiled her research and gathered first-hand information about FLDS, I received my answers and was shocked. This is not a book where an author spews her views on religion disguised as a novel. FLDS is a cult that does not adhere to any tenets of any religion. Beecham has done a tremendous amount of in depth research to incorporate these facts into a fictional murder mystery, and the results are an amazing and fascinating book. The writing is tight and fluid. The path to the murder clues grows as the plot moves forward. Beecham strings her readers along cleverly, not releasing us until the final explosive ending.
After hearing Beecham speak about Grave Silence, I reread the book. If she had written a non-fiction account of this cult, I would not have believed the magnitude and far-reaching effects FLDS has on its victims, the young girls who are forced into this way of life by other adult family members. This fictional story, termed a "message mystery" by the author, cannot be ignored. It captures the reader and obliges us to look beyond our world. Beecham's telling helps us swallow the hard reality and reflect upon the importance of unmasking these groups. After reading Grave Silence, I suggest you take another glance. The implications of this novel are significant and cannot be overlooked.
(Beecham won a 2006 GCLS award in the mystery/thriller/adventure category for Grave Silence. In September 2006 Sleep of Reason, the second Jude Devine mystery, will be released.)
Hard to Read - Hard to Put Down.......2006-07-13
Jude Devine, a FBI agent, has been assigned to an undercover operation in remote Paradox Valley. She assumes the duties of Sheriff's detective for the Montzuma County Sheriff's office. While she is building a case for the FBI, a dead, mutilated woman shows up on her turf. She and her deputy begin an investigation. It leads them to a cult of Mormon polygamists. What follows is a web of secrecy, deception, abuse, and brainwashing.
This book is hard to read in places because it depicts spousal and child abuse in detail. While the descriptions are germane to the story, it remains hard to read.
Beecham carefully develops the characters in this book from petty crook Bobby Lee to Jude Devine. Her descriptions of the people are carefully drawn so the reader comes to care about them all - with the exception, of course, of the cultists who the reader will learn to despise. Her descriptions of this remote area near the Four Corners is beautifully drawn so the reader senses the desolation and the isolation.
This is a procedural at its best. We follow along with Jude as she uncovers each bit of evidence that will lead her to the woman's killer.
The romance is well done. Jude's relationship - or non-relationship - with the local pathologist, Dr. Mercy Westmoreland, begins slowly and builds slowly. By book's end, however, the two women still want different things from each other - resolution of which will undoubtedly take place in a later book in the series.
Over all this is a good read for mystery fans, for romance fans, and for readers who like to learn from their fiction.
Chilling & Poignant.......2006-06-05
Grave Silence is a chilling look into an American polygamist cult. As usual, Rose Beecham writes with clear wit and precision and, in the case of this story, poignantly about the lives of abused women and children. It's a hard-to-put-down read.
A welcome return by the author.......2006-04-25
It's good to see Rose Beecham back on the shelves. This is far better than her previous detective series (Amanda Valentine), and that's saying a lot.
This book is one of the rare books that I immediately begin re-reading as soon as I reach the end; it's that good.
Others have described the plot; I'll just add that not only do you learn more about a topic that you really wish weren't true (the plygs) but you have a helluva read.
All I can say to the author is "More!".

Such vivid descriptions that you cannot read it in one go.......2005-08-09
A corpse is found on a hill in the outskirts of Reykjavik. It looks like it has already been there for a long time, but the excavation goes terribly slow because a team of archaeologists is carrying out the work. In the meantime inspector Erlendur and his colleagues try to get a picture of what happened 50 to 70 years ago. Slowly but surely they find out the awful truth. In between the story line of the investigation, there is another storyline about a family consisting of a father, mother, 2 brothers and a handicapped sister. It soon becomes apparent that something horrible happened in the family and this is written down so vividly that I had to put down the book a few times because it nearly became too much. An in the meantime Erlendur's drugs-addicted daughter Eva Lind is in a coma and he finally finds the courage to tell her what he feels for her. In short, this is a wonderful, sensitive thriller with a lot of psychological insight, well-developed storylines and beautiful descriptions of the various characters.

Excellent Resource.......2002-01-10
This book thoroughly and thoughtfully examined the complexities of providing child welfare services in First Nations communities. The story of Lester's suicide was heartbreaking but the strength of the people who wanted to help was inspiring. This would be an excellent text for use in Native social work programs to highlight the many challenges on reserve social workers face.
The Book Tells The Truth.......2001-10-29
So many of the Canadian reserves suffer the same problems.
Only if all the reserves could open up and deal with the abuse problem.

WARNING - Most Other Reviewers Are Reviewing #17 not #13.......2005-03-08
I don't know what happened here, but most of these other reviews are for the wrong book. Only the three oldest reviews are for the right edition. The Product Description is for the right one(#13) but the Editorial Review by Amazon.com is for #17 as are 15 out of 20 of the Reader Reviews.
The table of contents for #13 is:
A WOMAN'S LIBERATION by Ursula K. Le Guin
STARSHIP DAY by Ian R. MacLeod
A PLACE WITH SHADE by Robert Reed
LUMINOUS by Greg Egan
THE PROMISE OF GOD by Michael F. Flynn
DEATH IN THE PROMISED LAND by Pat Cadigan

THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN FUTURE by Allen Steele
THE LINCOLN TRAIN by Maureen F. McHugh
WE WERE OUT OF OUR MINDS WITH JOY by David Marusek

HOME by Geoff Ryman
THERE ARE NO DEAD by Terr Bisson
RECORDING ANGEL by Paul J. McAuley
ELVIS BEARPAW'S LUCK by William Sanders
MORTIMER GRAY'S HISTORY OF DEATH by Brian Stableford
There's more than just a few modern classics here. They are:
McHugh's Hugo and Locus Award winning THE LINCOLN TRAIN
Kelly's Hugo Award winning THINK LIKE A DINOSAUR
Marusek's WE WERE OUT OF OUR MINDS WITH JOY
Bisson's THERE ARE NO DEAD
Egan's WANG'S CARPETS
Le Guin's A WOMEN'S LIBERATION
And the Hugo Award winning THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN FUTURE by Steele
There's some others which are really good (STARSHIP DAY comes to mind) and a few stinkers (Rosenblum's 'choppy' prose comes to mind), but when gathering 24 stories from any given year that is bound to happen.
Oddly there are no Nebula Award winners in this edition.
#13(1995) is perhaps the best of all of Gardner's Annuals. A recent discussion at the Asimov's Magazine website, which Gardner was still editing at the time, found most people liking #13 the best. It's odd to find a decade's best stories being those from mid-decade, it's always been the earlier or later years which defined any other decade. In that discussion over at Asimov's #12(1994) and #14(1996) were the other most popular of the Annuals, so that further illustrates just how good the short SF of the mid-nineties was.
I buy one of these big daddies every year and can never wait to start in on Gardner's Annual Summation. In fact, Spouse has to drive home because I can't wait until we get home to start reading. I GOTTA READ IT NOW! The Summation alone is ALMOST worth the price, I say "almost" because these puppies aren't cheap when they're hot off the presses. But, you now have the opportunity to buy these bad boys cheap.
If you're a student of SF this book is an absolute must. You get samples of everything going on in the genre AND that very in-depth Summation.
If you're simply a fan this book really isn't a must because there are stories which some people would hardly consider as being Science Fiction, but there's always that Summation. The Hartwell SF Annuals are probably more to your liking as far as being strictly SF. But then again, this particular edition doesn't have much of that "fluffy" stuff as compared to many of the other editions.
It's a great collection of stories. Buy it, you'll spend a lot less than I did.
A great colection!!!.......1998-08-24
They've said what I wanted to about the stories themselves. I'm odd for younger readers in that I was reading Cordwainer Smith before I'd heard of Card or Bujold. This was therefore a great way to introduce me to great "new" authors like McHugh, Kress, MacLeod, etc. The summations are a great way to see what's going on in the science fiction, & sadly I think magazines may be in worse shape than Dozois indicates. I think he doesn't want to say how bad things are because he doesn't want pity subscriptions. I hope Amazon allows me to mention that some of the Kansas guy's favorite stories are by Poul Anderson & that he meant to say "most loved & most hated" not "most & most hated". If they refuse to print this because I mentioned that then this will be the last time I visit this site! I hate to be melodramatic like that, but I think this Customer Comment thing is a great way to talk about books & I'd hate for a flub to ruin someone's point. Sadly that small digression's probably killed the chance this will appear so to continue I'd like to say Hartwell's is a great complement to this & you should try it too. It's not quite as good, but it has a lot of short humorous work that Dozois tends to lack. I understand Dozois preference for novellas, but it's nice to have a collection of shorter work when you're too busy for novellas. The summary that Dozois has is one of his (Dozois') main advantages since it points you to good books & anthologies you may have missed & tells you about older generation authors that even I'm not familiar with. I said the others said everything about the stories, but I realize that's not quite true. Dozois chooses much more hard sf then people give him credit for. Granted "Elvis Bearpaw's Luck" is basically a darkly humorous Cherokeeized sendup of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" & like Swanwick's "Radio Waves" it's fantasy with sf elements, but so are some of Hartwell's choices. "Wang's Carpet" was hard sf, but felt incomplete & is now part of Diaspora where it probably makes more sense. His other story "Luminous" stands on its own. I liked "Starship Day" by MacLeod, but if I say much about it I'll ruin it. Well I hope amazon will forgive my minor digression & I hope you science fiction fans will keep sf magazines alive so anthologies like this will have a variety of stories to choose, but I won't hold my breath.
Great collection!!!!!!!.......1998-07-09
The Kansas guy pretty much said what I think, except Poul Anderson wrote some good stuff. Also the hard sf by Egan was pretty good. "Recording Angel" was pretty good. I get the feeling this new series of McAuley's is in the Universe of this story. The summation was a little gloomy, but I'm hopeful the science fiction magazines won't die.
A great collection of stories........1998-06-16
Although I did not enjoy every story, I respected them. Meaning the ones I did not like I am sure someone else would. The ones I liked best were "Think Like a Dinosaur", "The Lincoln Train", "Genesis", & "Feigenbaum's Number". Although I'd like to say the title character in "Looking for Kelly Dahl" is quite interesting & memorable. "Think Like a Dinosaur" is good for people who liked the idea in Tom Godwin "The Cold Equation's", but thought it was sappy. It also has interesting aliens. "The Lincoln Train" introduced me to Maureen F. McHugh (which is a mixed blessing), still it's a good Alternate History story vividly written. Poul Anderson has written some of my most & most hated novels. Still "Genesis" is an interesting far future tale. My favorite part is more alternate history involved. "Feigenbaum's number" introduced me to Nancy Kress (mostly a good thing) it mixes math & Platonism. These stories (especially the Kress) are more emotional then I am used to sf being. Still it is a fairly varied mixture that even contains some hard sf. My only complaint is that he could have chosen less confusing stories that were under ten pages. (or just not included stories that short since he obviously doesn't like them that short)

Innovative and delicious.......2006-07-14
This book is chock full of reliably delicious recipes which are composed of ingredients that so many of us are trying to incorporate into our diets. The dishes induce a feeling of satiety and health as they please your palate. Recipes are not difficult at all, nor filled with esoteric ingredients. This is a terrific cookbook.
