Book Description
Lady Rose Summer couldn’t be more delighted to assist Society’s most beautiful new debutante Miss Dolly Tremaine in negotiating her very first Season. Now engaged to Captain Harry Cathcart in order to avoid being shipped off to India, Rose is desperate to do something more useful than attend endless balls and parties. And the country-bred Dolly was totally at sea—and needed all the help Rose could give. But when Rose rushes to prevent Dolly from making a disastrous mistake, she discovers her stabbed to death and floating in a boat on the Serpentine River. And it isn’t long before Rose barely survives an attempt on her own life. Now, Rose and Harry’s race to uncover the secrets of Dolly’s life is stirring up a hornet’s nest of deceptions and devilish schemes from London’s most exclusive townhouses to the seemingly-peaceful Yorkshire coast. And a cunning murderer is only a breath away from burying the truth—and the persistent Lady Rose—with one devastating stroke...
Customer Reviews:
will Harry and Rose ever get together............2007-09-16
I wanted to add a few quick points since other reviewers have so succinctly covered the gist of the book.
This "mystery-lite" series, set in Edwardian England, while not the most enthralling, mystery wise, is above par in characterizations, fun dialog and giving the reader the ambiance of the period the stories take place in.
I read the first three books back to back: first-Snobbery With Violence, second-Hasty Death, and third-Sick of Shadows-and I do recommend the reader read the books in order so they can follow the flow of Rose, Harry and crews adventures and misadventures.
I am an avid reader of Miss Chesney's Regency Romances and I can honestly say that this series is just as entertaining. Chesney is well known for her intriguing bits of info about the period the book is set in and it is here as well. I learned so much about the social customs, beliefs, superstitions and slang of the period.
I would suggest this series of any fan of period fiction who is looking for something a bit lighter and more funny than say The Historian, LOL. There is enough mystery to satisfy your average mystery fan, though mystery purists may feel unfulfilled. There is a fun and sweet side story of Romance that continues throughout and read the series if for no other reason than Rose's Ladies maid and companion-the hilarious Daisy!
I hope Miss Chesney writes more in this charming series-5 stars.
As to book three-of the three first books in this series, this one I liked the least. There were parts of the storyline I just wanted to strangle the two leads, Rose and Harry, for their thickheaded behovior towards each other and like another reviewer said, I do hope Miss Chesney quickly marries them so the storyline can evolve to bigger and better things. That being said, I still think the series is very good and I'm about to start book four and I hope for more in this series in the future.
Third in a series of comedy romantic murder mysteries.......2007-03-05
This is the third in a series of murder mysteries set in Britain in the first decade of the 20th century featuring Captain Harry Cathcart and Lady Rose Summer.
To date there are four books in the series, which are
Snobbery with Violence
Hasty Death
Sick of Shadows
Our Lady of Pain
The author writes romantic fiction, mostly humorous regency romances plus one or two set in the Edwardian period, under the name Marion Chesney; and also writes mystery/detective stories such as the Agatha Raisin and Hamish MacBeth series under the name M.C. Beaton.
This Edwardian series is a something of a cross-over between the two - part romance and part murder mystery - and the books often have both names on the cover (usually something like "M.C. Beaton writing as Marion Chesney.)
At the start of this third book, Lady Rose Summer is engaged to Captain Harry Cathcart. They agreed an engagement to prevent her parents, the Earl and Countess of Hadfield, shipping Lady Rose out to India to find a husband. Neither has admitted even to themselves that they actually have feelings for each other.
Lady Rose has arranged to meet Dolly Tremaine, the latest beautiful debutate to mesmerise London society, but finds her murdered, with Dolly's body laid out as a horrible parody of the painting "The Lady of Shallott."
Despite the fact that fierce arguments between them cause their engagement to be broken off, Lady Rose and Captain Cathcart must work together again to find out who murdered Dolly. Meanwhile they have to deal with a pair of noble blackmailers and with wicked society gossips .....
The main characters in the series are:
Captain Harry Cathcart, younger son of a Baron, has left the army after being injured in the Boer war. At the start of the first book in the series he carried out a service for Lady Rose's father for which he gained a reputation as a fixer, and by the time of this third book he is successfully running a business as the Edwardian equivalent of a Private Investigator - though this makes some members of "Society" look down on him as being "in trade."
Lady Rose Summer, only daughter of the Earl and Countess of Hadfield - slightly notorious as having briefly been involved with suffragettes. Chafes at the fact that society will not allow her a useful role, and constantly looking for something more challenging to do - fom working as a typist for a bank to helping the police solve murders.
Beckett - Harry's valet: in love with Daisy
Daisy - Lady Rose's companion. A former chorus girl, but when Captain Cathcart recruited her to play the role of a maid with a contagious disease as one of the escapades in the first book, Lady Rose recruited her to do the job for real. Later Lady Rose promoted her from Maid to Companion. In love with Becket.
Detective Superintendent Kerridge - a senior policeman of humble origins and carefully supressed radical views, reinforced by the fact that whenever he has to interview an aristocrat they always threaten to report him to the Prime Minister. Plays Inspector Slack to Lady Rose's Miss Marple.
Despite that comparison, this is not in the same league as Agatha Christie as a detective story, and neither is it in the same league as Jane Austen as a romance. However, it is an amusing and entertaining light read.
Charming, but not as good as M.C.Beaton books.......2007-01-10
I have read all three of the books in this series. I was first an Agatha Raisin fan, then I discovered Hamish MacBeth. I enjoy both of those series very much, and have also read her stand-alone, "Skeleton in the Closet."
I enjoyed "Snobbery with Violence" (first of this series), so went on to read the other two books. Starting with "Hasty Death," and continuing with this one, I liked the plot lines and the character interaction, but typos, inconsistencies, and "historical" data being clunked into the story line with very little reason, began to get to me.
So I guess that my verdict is that this is a charming bit of fluff, but not very well written (and not very well edited). If you haven't read her M.C. Beaton stories, I would go for those first. Agatha and Hamish are both written as modern day, but take place (one in the Cotswolds and one in the Highlands) in locations where old customs are still very much alive, with the results being both more intriguing and quite humorous.
Good.......2006-08-24
I'm not a big fan of this series, but since the books are small and breezy, I wanted to finish them. Sick of Shadows is my favorite in the series. Or, perhaps more accurately, it was the book I disliked the least. Here's why:
*I liked that Rose and Daisy got to spend some time in the country with a new family. It did wonders for Rose's humanity.
*Harry and Rose are finally taking steps to forming a real friendship and admiration.
*The tone was a little more fast-paced which made for a better, more tightly written mystery. I found myself actually caring whodunit and that wasn't so for the previous books.
*Harry's new Secretary, Ailsa. Who can't love a character like her? Even while gin soaked, she still manages to fend off bad guys with a gun. Love her.
Sick of shadows of doubt.......2006-01-06
This book is a good cozy read but I don't think Ms. Chesney wrote it. In the second book he gave her a ring and in this book it said that he didn't. Also, lets get these two together already. I am sick of their stupid lack of communication. This could be a great series if they just got married and solved mysteries like in the Pitt books by Anne Perry. My advise is wait for the paperback or use your library.

Stick With The Novels.......2007-05-19
"An Armory of Swords", edited by Fred Saberhagen, is an anthology of novelettes and a novella all based on Saberhagen's Swords series and written by other authors. It was originally published in June of 1995. We learn fairly quickly that it isn't so easy to craft one of these stories, and that Saberhagen's style is an important part of the series. Though not horrible, this anthology of stories doesn't measure up to the rest of the series, and will be of interest mostly for the one story which Saberhagen wrote, and only for those people who love the series.
The first story is "Blind Man's Blade", a novelette which Fred Saberhagen wrote, and which gives the reader an interesting story about the start of the great game of the gods, and the role which mortals would have to play in it. This story is up there in quality with the rest of the series.
The next story is "Woundhealer", a novelette by Walter Jon Williams, and he does a decent job of putting together a story, but it is a bit nondescript. In the story, one of the Great Swords has fallen into the hands of a tyrannical Lord (Lord Landry), who is in the habit of using all those around him, including his family, for his own personal gain.
The next story is "Fealty", a novelette by Gene Bostwick, and this is my favorite non-Saberhagen story in this book. Bostwick creates an interesting story with interesting characters and fits them into Saberhagen's world. In this story, a Templar (Jarmon) has acquired one of the Great Swords, and decides it is much too dangerous in the hands of men. He decides to bury it inside the body of its former owner, but to do so he needs the help of a grave digger (Keaf) who falls prey to his own curiosity.
The next story is "Dragon Debt", a novelette by Robert E. Vardeman. The premise of this story is okay, but as the reader, I never believed that Dragonslayer could be held for such a long time by such a character. In addition, the story didn't really flow very well, but it is not the weakest story in this book. In short, a man (Kennek) claiming to have Dragonslayer, and thus to slay dragons by profession comes to a small town and is going to marry Trav's sister (Juliana). Trav is sure that he is lying, and when luck delivers some dragon eggs to him, he decides to raise some dragons to show everyone that Kennek is a fraud.
The next story is "The Sword of Aren-Nath", a novelette by Thomas Saberhagen, who is Fred's son. As with Williams' effort, the story is somewhat bland, but it is a decent attempt at writing a story for Saberhagen's world. In this story, a boyhood prank by Aron, Klin, and Tall Boy results in Aron's accidentally releasing a horror which seems unstoppable. The Vassal knows what to do though, and is resolved to protect the town from the evil creature.
The next story is "Glad Yule", a novella by Pati Nagle. The story is about three men (Trenton Greyson, Paethor of Mirador, and Echevarian of Verdas) who are sent by King Nigel to acquire Farslayer by using Wayfinder. After some initial trouble with Wayfinder switching directions, a final rewording of what they seek takes them nearly in the opposite direction from where they were going. This brings them into Highmass around the time of Yule. There they meet another traveler, Baron Carcham, who also carries one of the Great Swords. The story is interesting to read, but the ending didn't work for me, and I felt she broke some of the rules of the Swords.
The next story is "Luck of the Draw", a novelette by Michael A. Stackpole. In this story, Count Callisto finds himself in a dire situation, which seems to offer him nothing but death at the hands of the pirate Red Rinaldo. With little to hope for, the sudden appearance of Coinspinner suddenly seems to turn things around. Unfortunately, he still must face Red Rinaldo, and he holds Shieldbreaker. I would consider this to be the weakest story in the book. Stackpole breaks many rules with regards to Coinspinner, so while it is certainly readable, I was frustrated by some parts of the story.
The last story in the book is "Stealth and the Lady", a novelette by Sage Walker. This story was difficult to read for me. I felt she tried to put too much into a novelette length story. There is a lot of background detail about the characters and the political situation, and the story is non-linear, so I found myself flipping back through the story looking for information, which really shouldn't happen for a novelette. The story does finish stronger than it starts, but I can't say that it was worth it. I also felt the story was forced into the Swords' universe, rather than being a part of it.
All and all, this book really is only for Swords series fans, and even then it could easily be skipped. There is nothing here which impacts the rest of the series, other than the very first story, and that only gives the reader more information about the start of the game.
Armed, but not especially dangerous.......2006-06-10
This is a collection of stories about the Twelve Swords of Power by a variety of authors. To those of you who've read Saberhagen's series, this should be familiar ground. The most interesting aspect of this book is seeing other people's takes on the magical Swords. Close after that is seeing stories about Doomgiver and Townsaver, which recieve scant attention in the original series, both being destroyed in the third book.
Of the eight stories in this book, "Woundhealer" is definitely the most interesting. Oddly, the Sword (and magic in general) receive only marginal attention in this story. Mostly it is concerned with the in-fighting and intrigue of the family of the lord of a small mountain holding. "Stealth and the Lady" also shares this oddity. Sightblinder, the ostensible subject, is scarcely mentioned.
The book is a mixed bag. "Woundhealer", "Blind Man's Blade", and "The Luck of the Draw" are engaging and amusing tales. "Dragon Debt" is little more than annoying, especially the contrived choice of the hero at the end.
If you're already a fan of the series, you should definitely pick this one up, as it fleshes out a few details you've probably been curious about. If you've not read them yet, it would be better to start with some of the others and come back to this one. The Empire of the East, though only slightly connected to the later books, is an excellent book, almost epic in scale. That would be an excllent introduction to the rest. Then come back to this one.
The Swords from different viewpoints.......2002-05-06
"An Armory of Swords" is a collection of short stories by eight authors, including Fred Saberhagen, set in the world of the Twelve Swords. Saberhagen starts off the collection with a "What If?" story. Basically, the story of the Swords is rewritten and sets the stage for new stories regarding the Swords if the first story had actually happened.
The first five stories are excellent, especially the one by Robert Vardeman that dealt with a man's desire to prove the town "hero" a fraud. The story is an emotional one with an ending that is powerful. It makes the reader wonder whether they should be pleased with the story's resolution or hurt due to characters' actions which are simply innate ones.
While the first five stories are excellent, the last three tend to drag. It seems like the authors were all told they had to create a short story using one or more specific Swords as the anthology encompasses all but one of the Swords. The one Sword does receive a mention in the first story, but does not serve an integral part like the other eleven do throughout the anthology. Had the last three stories been as enthralling as the first five, this would be a five star book. However, due to their letdown, it is a four star book. Overall, it's definitely a worthwhile read to all fans of the Swords books.
Another fine addition.......2000-09-16
The Books of Swords are a great series, and this is another fine addition. It does a wonderful job exploring the possibilities of such unique items as the God forged blades. With their staggering abilities, and equally hindering disadvantages for exploitation. Definately recommended, if the first book of swords to read, or as part of the whole amazing series.

The verdict is in: those simple carbs we've been living on are killing us. For good health, we've got to get our blood sugar under control and stop the incessant cravings. Or so says Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet. The first half of the book details the science behind the diet. Most of the explanations revolve around why things you thought were healthy-orange juice, wheat toast, carrots-are actually evil. To avoid blood sugar surges, Agatston created a modified carbohydrate plan, recommending plenty of high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats, while cutting bread, rice, pastas, and fruits. Major differences from other diets include a lack of concern over portion size and a serious indifference to exercise. Feeling full while on a diet is a beautiful thing, but it seems odd that a cardiologist buries his exercise recommendations in a solitary sentence.
The last half of the book covers his three-stage plan; daily diets are mixed with recipes, some of which are from South Beach restaurant chefs. The most restrictive period lasts just two weeks, enough time to stabilize your urges and lose a few pounds; stage two adds fruits and a handful of other carbs, while stage three is meant to last the remainder of your life, with occasional lapses for white bread or birthday cake. While the diet is sound, the book could be better organized. The first half mixes scientific study with anecdote in a seemingly random way, while the mix of meal plans and recipes can be confusing. Still, the recipes are varied and tasty, and you'll never feel deprived, unless you currently happen to live by bread alone. --Jill Lightner

Customer Reviews:
Easy Diet and it Works.......2007-10-04
I'm not one to follow diets usually, because I always believe in eat less/exercise more. Unfortunately that doesn't work, because when I exercise more, I eat more. When a friend recommended the South Beach I decided to read up about the philosophy first before jumping in. I had always been raised to think that carbohydrates are good and fats are bad. What Dr. Agaston explains is that there are good carbs and bad carbs, good fats and bad fats. The South Beach diet educates you on what is good for you, and what causes weight gain and harmful blood chemistry.
As for the mechanics of the diet, it is really quite simple. I never followed their menus, or their recipes. I just looked at the allowed foods and made up my own meals. I really hate to count anything, document anything or look things up. This diet doesn't require any of that, unless it is to count the number of peanuts you should have for a snack (which is really quite simple to do). It also doesn't require purchasing special meals, or drinks, or anything. Just follow the principles, adapt to your own tastes and off comes the weight.
There are 3 phases to the diet, all explained and easily understood. The book also explains the physiology of the diet, and why harmful swings in blood sugar can cause problems, including overweight, diabetes and heart disease. Once you get your blood sugar levels under control, you do not get cravings anymore or hunger pangs in between meals. It is really ironic that being on this diet does not make you hungry. In fact, starving yourself, or being hungry is counterproductive, since the key is to maintain a steady blood sugar state, so that you do not experience the feast/famine cycle which causes overeating, as well as overstorage of fat.
Are you ready?.......2007-09-22
I've just purchased my sixth gift copy of The South Beach Diet. No, I don't go around sending it to people who I think need to drop some pounds. But when a friend wants to know how I lost weight or why we aren't eating potatoes or bread, and they seriously indicate an interest in following new food-eating patterns, I send them a copy. My husband and I bought a copy three years ago and embarked on our South Beach food adventure. Within six months, I had lost 40 pounds, he had lost the ten that was his goal, and while I have gained part of mine back after slipping off the path, I am now back on it to drop 10 lbs.
Dr. Agatston gives enough philosophy behind his diet suggestions, and his fairly rigorous first two weeks is succcessful quickly enough, that we found it easy to continue. And I can honestly say, I never felt hungry.
Some Programs are Better than Others.......2007-09-20
I have been there, I have seen it, I have done it all! Low carb, low fat, low this, low that... It took me many years to realize that diets are nothing else but what they are - just diets. I will NOT say they don't work. Sure they work! At least as long as you watch each and every bite you take! At least as long as you maintain your strong willpower. It IS nice to have good looks, but is that all we want from our lives? How about GOOD LOOKS resulting from GOOD HEALTH? Dr. Tombak in his book "Can We Live 150 Year" cites bad habits that lead people to obesity. Here are some of them:
1. The habit of eating fast and not chewing the food well
2. Drinking fluids at meals
3. Frequent snacking or constant chewing
4. Incorrect combining of food products
5. Lying down after meals
6. Sitting lifestyle
7. Eating while watching TV
8. Eating while irritated
9. Eating before bedtime or at night
10. Eating mostly refined and cooked food products.
Recognize some of them? Mr.Tombak, like Atkins and Agatston, also mentions eating too mach of carbohydrates. But he does not limit the cause of obesity to ONE SOURCE. Why? Because he applies COMMONSENSE. Because he puts GOOD HEALTH before GOOD LOOKS! Not good looks at all cost! Here is how he proposes to lose weight:
1. Correct the alignment of lumbar vertebrae. (Have you ever heard of this one? He explains why.)
2. Gradually and systematically increase the amount of your physical activities. (Nothing new, isn't it?)
3. Combine food products correctly. (We hear often about this one, too)
4. Perform internal cleansing routines and go through regular fasts.
Yes, just periodical short fasts that will cleanse your body, and shake off your cravings. It is nothing new! It is a simple procedure applied by many people around the world throughout ages. Larry Clapp in his book "Prostate Health in 90 Days" advocates the same. None of these unnatural diets throughout your entire life!...
I did a few days of fasting myself, and I strongly recommend this over any kind of diet to anyone who cares about his looks, his health, and his longevity. Periodical fasting energizes; purifies your body and mind; makes it easier to change your eating habits and to get back to natural, fiber-rich foods.
Everybody has his own opinion, but for me Tombak makes much more sense then Atkins, Agatston and all other inventors of "perfect diets"...
Why four stars for "The South Beach Diet"? -- Because it works! But at what cost to your lifelong pleasure, and (possibly) to your health? Be sensible. Read Can We Live 150 instead.
The South Beach Diet .......2007-09-15
If you can't stick to the Atkins diet then this one will be even more of a challenge because with Atkins you get to eat higher fat contented foods where as with South Beach you have to choose the lower-fat, lower-calorie versions of the food you get to eat on the Atkins, I would recommend starting with Atkins(the strictest low carb plan) then after induction phase, try South Beach's induction then phases 2&3 shouldn't be too much of a problem to stick to.
Skeptic no more.......2007-09-14
Count me as one who doubted the South Beach approach. But...I'm in week three, have lost twenty pounds so far, and have enjoyed the variety of "diet" meal recipes Dr. Agatston provides. I highly recommend this.

Customer Reviews:
A Must Have.......2005-05-24
This book is full of inspiring recipes! I trust them all because I know that each recipe has been reviewed and I am also an avid fan of Allrecipes.com. For those who think they can get every recipe off of the website for free, I think you probably can, but the book inspires you of things you might not search for.
I have made several recipes from this cookbook and taken them to different gatherings. Someone always asks me for the recipe.
In addition, I love that this book has all of the nutrition information for each recipe! This is my second All Recipes cookbook and I would buy another one.
