Book Description

Now for the first time in one captivating volume, here are the first three mysteries featuring J. A. Jance's most popular and enduring character, Seattle homicide detective Jonas Piedmont Beaumont. It's a trio of tales steeped in the atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest that is sure to remind everyone that Jance is a master of modern suspense fiction.

In Until Proven Guilty Beaumont finds himself investigating the murder of a five-year-old girl. But his own obsessions and demons could prove dangerous companions in a murky world of blind faith and religious fanaticism as he discovers that he himself is the target of a twisted passion ... and a love that can kill. In Injustice for All Beaumont's well-earned vacation becomes a waking nightmare as he's forced to comfort a beautiful blonde after she discovers a dead body on a Washington beach. Suddenly a lethal brew of lust, madness, and politics threatens to drag the dedicated Seattle cop into the path of a killer whose dark hunger is rapidly becoming an obsession. And in Trial by Fury a naked, dead body is found lying in a Dumpster. What's most shocking is the manner in which the man died -- he was lynched. The victim, a high school coach, has left behind a very pregnant wife with a very dangerous secret. And a sixth sense developed over twenty years on the job tells Beaumont that this investigation is going to the lethal extremes of passion, lies, and hatred.

5 out of 5 stars terrific way to meet a strong long running police procedural.......2005-03-01

"Until Proven Guilty". The victim was no more than five years old; the weapon a Holly Hobbie gown used to strangulate Angela "Angel" Barstogi. Seattle Homicide Detective J.P. Beaumont may have fifteen years of murder cases under his belt, but whenever a kid is involved it is tough. He and his partner newcomer Ron Peters concentrate on the mother Suzanne and the cult leader Pastor Michael Brodie of the Faith Tabernacle. However, as he struggles to understand how Michael has such control over the "sisters", Beau, as J.P. is called, is sidetracked when he meets and falls in love with Anne Corley. Though Beau. does not come out as professional as he does in later tales because he spends the middle of the novel sniffing after Anne rather than the case, the partnering between he and Ron cleverly start to form, storm, norm, and perform.

"Injustice for All". Beau is on vacation at Rosario resort when he heard the scream that sounded like a bad teen slasher flick. Ginger Watkins was sobbing while Sig Larson of the parole board attending a seminar lies dead on the beach. Though a hundred plus miles from his jurisdiction, Beau takes charge of the crime scene only to learn that the husband of his witness is Darrell Watkins, running for lieutenant governor and that the victim's wife accuses said witness of an affair with her now dead spouse. The vacation shot to hell even though Beau is attracted to his star witness. In an early appearance, Beau conducts an intriguing investigation that is somewhat sidetracked by his attraction to Ginger, but he show more of the depth of caring that highlights his later tales as he makes inquiries though outside his jurisdiction.

"Trial by Fury". The corpse of Mercer Island High School basketball coach Darwin Ridley was found in a dumpster; he was executed state-style. Beau investigates starting with the pregnant wife Joanna who says her husband never comes home following a defeat as he needs time to recover and the team just lost at the finals. The suspects are shockingly everywhere including the spouse, but who could have done a state style execution seems juts outside Beau's grasp. This is the Beau that readers adore as he is filled with flaws, gets no respect, but keeps working in between drinks to solve the case.

These three 1980s Beaumont tales introduces the audience to Beau, his partner, his journalist enemy, and some of the lovers in his life while providing a grim realistic po0lice procedural. SENTENCED TO DIE is a terrific way to meet one of the better long running police procedurals.

"

A gripping tale of bloodlust and terror from the New York Times bestselling author of Exit Wounds

It was a scene from a ""slasher flick"" -- a beautiful woman's terrified screams piercing the air, a dead body sprawled at her feet, blood staining the pristine sands of a Washington beach. But the blood is real, and the victim won't be rising when a director yells, ""Cut!"" In one horrific instant, a homicide detective's well-earned holiday has become a waking nightmare. Suddenly a lethal brew of passion, madness, and politics threatens to do more than poison J.P. Beaumont's sleep; it's dragging the dedicated Seattle cop into the path of a killer whose dark hunger is rapidly becoming an obsession.

4 out of 5 stars It Just Gets Better.......2007-09-11

J.P.Beaumont has buried Anne Corley, but isn't finding being rich as attractive as it's advertised. J.A. Jance fulfills our expectations with Beau's "hard boiled, flawed" character and his partner Ron Peters. A mystery wouldn't be any fun if the good guys didn't win in the end, but a confessional is trite.
One of the best characters in the story is the flamboyant city of Settle, especially for someone who has never been near the west coast and missed seeing "Sleeping in Settle." I personally enjoy the character of Ralph Ames. Maybe because he reminds me of a cousin I had by the same name who was slicker than oil on water.
A vacation gone bad with a beautiful blonde, needing comfort because of the body at her feet keeps you turning pages.
Nash Black, author of "Sins of the Fathers" and "Travelers."

4 out of 5 stars J. P. Beaumont is one of my favorites.......2006-04-30

This is one of Jance's earlier J.P. Beaumont mysteries. It was still a page turner. The story is set in the Seattle area and those readers familiar with the city will appreciate the many references that make this series so enjoyable. The series only gets better.

5 out of 5 stars Any book with JP is a good book........2003-08-04

Just buy it and all the other stories with JP Beaumont.
I love them...all!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good - 3.5 Stars.......2002-11-16

I enjoyed this book all the way through. The characters are great and the situations Beau puts himself into are quite entertaining. All the way up to the last 30 pages I was waffling between a four or five star rating. The ending just didn't work for me. I've never been a fan of the bad guy thinking he's got the upper hand spills his guts to the cop ending. That knocked me back to 3.5 stars.

That said, Judith Jance really has something going on. It was fun riding along with the investigation, meeting the suspects, attending events uninvited to harass politicians. Something that I particularly enjoyed was that the list of suspects was assembled complete with negative perspective and suspicion and then as Beaumont moves through the list, the suspicion dissipates and we meet every day likeable people. Well done.

There were some very funny and creatively developed scenes that went a long way toward establishing me as a fan of J. A. Jance. The word-picture memory trick was hilarious. And the Pasco police chief's office as well as the Mary Kay convention were stand out scenes.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing flashy or funny, but a solid who-dunn-it.......2001-02-27

In an era of wise cracking sluethes, J.P. Beaumont comes off a bit on the serious side. Of course, if I'd killed my spouse and then had my next lover die in a suspicious car accident, I might not have much of sense of humor either.

In this, the second of the Beaumont series, we come to know much more about the personal side of Beau, his partner Peters and his lawyer, Ames. I suspect this book would be tough to enjoy without reading the opening book of the series - Until Proven Guilty - first. So much of this book involves recovery from the events of the first book.

The mystery in this book is solid enough - a mix of electoral and parole board politics and money.

5 out of 5 stars Dragons: Worlds Afire.......2006-11-05

I've been a fan of the Forgotten Realms since the beginning and the main reason I purchased this book was for the short story by R.A. Salvatore. I wanted to add this story to my collection of Realms novels and stories.

The book itself is very nice; the artwork inside is elaborate, the one story I did read was very well put together with respect to the style and feel of the whole book and made for an entertaining and quick read.

If one enjoys the other worlds, and I know I'll get around to reading the other stories soon, this is very good book to have. It features long standing authors of the worlds: R.A. Salvatore for the Realms, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman for Dragonlance, Keith Baker, founder of Eberron, and Scott Mcgough of Magic: The Gathering. The overall design of the book, from cover to cover, is wonderful and should be included in any collection of shared world fiction.

        I certainly appreciate the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Dragons Worlds Afire.......2006-08-31

This is a beautiful book with compelling stories. I was particularly taken by the last story in the book "Unnatural Predators by Scott McGough." The story draws the reader into a world of mystery and magic. The author injects sharp humor and sharper dialoge. A wonderful book to read and display.

4 out of 5 stars Four stories, Four worlds, All solid editions........2006-06-18

Dragons: World Afire is a collaboration from Wizards of the Coast that has four novellas in it featuring stories from the four popular worlds of shared world fantasy books. These are; The Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Eberron, and Magic: The Gathering. All four novella feature stories involving dragons and the havoc they can cause. Wizards of the coast brought in some of the biggest names in each of the worlds to pen the stories. As well as some of the top fantasy artists as well to provide wonderful drawings of a dragon to start each story.

        The stories are as follows:

#1- If They Ever Happen Upon My Lair by R.A. Salvatore (Forgotten Realms). This story is actually a prequel to Salvatore's latest book, Promise of the Witch-King. In this novel Salvatore explains one of the biggest questions that readers were left with after reading PotWK. Also, there is a scene in this novella that may be the single best description of a dragon I have ever read. It is a prime example of show don't tell and came across very well. The story itself is about average. While there is nothing overly special about it, it is still worth reading simply to answer one of the questions from PotWK. Fans of the Forgotten Realms and Salvatore will certainly understand this story.

#2 - Here Be Dragons {A Kender Tale} by Margaret Weis and Tracey Hickman (Dragonlance). I will freely admit reading the Dragonlance Chronicles is what started me on my fantast obsession. This novella is classic Weis and Hickman. This tale centers on Tasslehoff Burrfoot and the situations he can quickly find himself in. There are several moments in this novel that will cause a chuckle and fans of the Chronicles will surely appreciate this tale. Of the four stories in the book I would rate this one as the best, but there may be some personal bias there as well.

#3- Principle of Fire by Keith Baker (Eberron). This is a tale of deceit and has a couple plot twists within the few pages of the novella. It also adds a good amount of detail to the dragons of Eberron and what they are thinking and why they have done some of the things they do. This novella also adds some questions to the readers mind, enough so that in future Eberron books the reader may pay closer attention to things. If you are a fan of Eberron books, this is a must read for you. Mr. Baker does a decent job of furthering the world of Eberron and adding more material for the reader.

#4 - Unnatural Predator by Scott McGoug (Magic: The Gathering). I need to also admit here, that I have never read a Magic: The Gathering novel before so I didn't really know what to expect from it. This novella seemed a bit on the long side to me. There appeared to be a couple instances where it could have been shortened and still relayed the information relevant to the story. The story itself is a decent story with a couple plot twists, but nothing really special. Of course this may be a very necessary story to Magic: The Gathering fans, but I can't comment on that having never read a novel in that world before. I did enjoy reading it however.

My overall comments of the book as a whole. This seems to be an attempt by Wizards of the Coast to encourage readers of one world to cross over and read other worlds as well. What better thing to encourage that than stories about dragons. If not for Amazon.com I would have been highly disappointed in the price of the book. It retails for $29.95, but with the Amazon.com sale I was able to get it for $19.77. This needs to be mentioned because I don't feel there was $29 worth of stories in this book. Four stories totaling 142 pages does not warrant a $29 price tag, which is more than hardcover editions of the latest books by Salvatore, and Weis & Hickman. This book is certainly a good looking book, well put together, with wonderful drawings and illustrations, but not for that amount of money.

The assortment of stories is this books strength. There is humor, history, intrigue, plot twists and countless other things. The five authors enlisted for this project were the right ones in my opinion and I enjoyed the vast majority of this book.

Overall I would recommend this book to many people, but if you have to pay full price for it, I would hold off and look elsewhere.

        Book Description

Some authors spin stories. Some create characters. And some bring into being entire universes that were never before dreamed. . . .

In 1983 the literary world was surprised--and even shocked--when a paperback Dungeons and Dragons fantasy by an unknown author team rocketed to the top of the New York Times bestseller list and stayed there.

With more than fifteen million copies of their books in print, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman have appeared on bestseller lists--including twelve New York Times bestsellers--ever since that first Dragonlance success, delighting, mystifying, intriguing, and above all, entertaining millions of readers with each new series of fantasy novels. Each series or cycle of their work is unique in that it brings into being an entire new universe, complete with its own creatures, history, geography and even physical (and magical) laws.

This invaluable literary guide and companion introduces both the authors and their worlds. Extensive biographical interviews with both Weis and Hickman reveal their characters, their separate histories, their ongoing working relationship, their years at TSR and in the gaming world, and their subsequent success--including the legendary Traveling Road Show that helped establish their success.

But the heart of this lavishly illustrated book is the worlds themselves. Realms of Dragons contains five separate, comprehensive, authoritative concordances--each complete from A to Z--that detail, explicate, explain, and often illustrate ever important character, event, element, and incident in every book in every series. It's all here--from the sea-elf Apoletta (Dragons of Spring Dawning) to the loony old wizard Zafnib (Nightsword), from Death Gate to Dragonlance to Starshield.

Weis and Hickman have taken their place with J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Jordan, David Eddings, and Anne McCaffrey in the pantheon of modern fantasy. And this unique companion and guide illuminates their journey every step of the way.

Lavishly illustrated, thoroughly annotated, and carefully documented, Realms of Dragons is an incomparable tribute to the bestselling fantasy team of all time--a beautiful keepsake fans new and old will treasure.

3 out of 5 stars Borrow it from the library.......2002-10-18

Like someone else said, the back cover is a lie - there are no maps. Basically I borrowed this book from the library because of the first 50 pages which contain interviews with Weis & Hickman. This is really interesting stuff, covering :
        - their backgrounds
        - how they got to TSR
        - how the whole DragonLance project started
        - how they got chosen to write the books and the incredibly short time frames they had - they wrote the first DragonLance book in under 2 months!

My advice, read this section, forget the rest. It ain't worth buying but definitely worth borrowing.

        4 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2000-03-19

If your looking for an autobiography, novel or a new story, you've come to the wrong place. This is a very detailed reference book FULL of information, with only a little new meterial (like about the author's lives). If you are a longtime fan of the author's, however, this can be a great book to have. After having already read the books of Weis and Hickman, reading this book can remind you what happened, clarify confusing points, or simply bring back memories of a great story.

3 out of 5 stars Short Sword in Long Scabbard.......2000-01-10

If you want to know more about the worlds created by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, this book will give you a good amount of information on the various settings. The bulk of the book is a comprehensive and considerably detailed encyclopedia separated into five different sections -- each one dedicated to a particular series (i.e. the Death Gate Cycle, the Dragonlance Novels, etc.). The book is also wonderfully supplied with beautiful full-color paintings from the novels, black and white photographs of the authors in the Interviews chapter, and a helpful book-by-book analysis of the authors' various works. The first problem, however, with this potentially great work is that the description at the back of the book misleads the reader. It promises "numerous black-and-white DRAWINGS and MAPS to each world." This is false. There are absolutely NO MAPS within the book, and the only black and white pictures are mostly photographs. It's disappointing because detailed maps would have greatly aided the encyclopedia entries. And a well-structured timeline would have likewise been invaluable and much appreciated. The encyclopedia entries also need more information. Some descriptions are only a sentence long. In addition, the book-by-book analysis in the first chapter completely left out the Dragonlance Novels (which I find particularly sinful, because it was the Dragonlance Series that catapulted Weis and Hickman to fame.) So much more could have been added visually. The writing content could have been packed with meatier annotations and previously unknown trivia. I guess I'll have to wait for another, worthier attempt at these magnificent fantasy realms.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book.......1999-12-14

This book is really really cool. Weis and Hickman are awesome authors, and this book is great for fans of them. It has all their books, from the dragonlance to death gate to darksword, and even some of their solo works like the star of the guardians. I love it, a definite good buy.

A far future SF adventure novel by L. E. Modesitt, a brand name. This is his best sf pageturner to date, a standalone novel with a strong thriller plot backed up by Modesitt's signature philosophical underpinnings.

            5 out of 5 stars A Raven Among Eagles.......2007-07-16

The Octagonal Raven (2001) is a standalone SF novel in the Archform: Beauty universe. Over four centuries after Flash, Earth has a number of colonies linked by interstellar Gates. The Federal Union is the overgovernment of Earth and the colonies.

In this novel, Daryn Alwyn comes from a rich family and has the advantage of preselected genes. However, he did not join UniComm, the family business, but instead became a Federal Service pilot. Now he has retired from FS and started his own business as a consulting methodizer and is also an up and coming edart composer. Most of his consulting work is for the networks, but never for UniComm.

Attending a concert party organized by his cousin Kharl, Daryn meets an interesting young lady named Elysa. When the room becomes a bit warm, Daryn and Elysa step outside on the veranda. While outside, Daryn becomes a little flushed and dizzy. He returns to the house and immediately collapses. Elysa fades into the night and then cannot be found in the public databases.

Recovering enough to have an extended conversation, Daryn finds that he has been more or less unconscious for two weeks. Apparently he had an anaphylactic reaction, but later learns that this shock had been caused by unknown nanites. Kharl had treated him with specialized search and destroy nanites that cleared out all other nanites from his system. Then Kharl restores his normal nanetic protection and releases him from treatment.

In this story, Daryn is attacked several times by a hidden cabal. He reports some of these attacks, but the Civil Authority either cannot detect the attacks or is unable to follow up the available evidence. Daryn only knows one assailant -- Elysa -- so he keeps trying to discover her true identity. However, two of the attacks occur while he is tracking down the single physical clue to her identity.

Daryn revisits an old acquaintance -- Majora Hyriss -- who had been at Kharl's party. Daryn had originally been introduced to Majora by his mother, the matchmaker, and so he had been polite but reserved at the time. In the last few years, he has begun to regret his coolness. When he finds his own system to be snooped, Daryn pays her a visit to use her system for his data searches. After a while, he really begins to regret his prior coolness.

This story was published before Arch-Form: Beauty and Flash, but seems to have some common elements. Apparently this novel is a sequel to these other books, taking place hundreds of years afterward. One such element is the Noram Commonacracy. Yet this book also has a PST Trust -- the cabal entity -- although that acronym may have another meaning than the PST in Flash. But the role is the same in both books.

Highly recommended for Modesitt fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of differing societies, hidden conspiracies, and understated romance.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, intelligent SF thriller.......2005-03-05

This is simply an excellent SF thriller. The main character, Daryn Alwyn, is a member of the genetic and economic elite called "pre-selects", as well as a member of one of the richest and most powerful families in the world - the Alwyns control the largest news network in the world. Daryn chooses not to use his family's wealth and sets out to make it on his own, first as an interstellar pilot and later as an independent artist/analyst. The first part of the novel consists of alternating chapters, switching back and forth from Daryn's youth to the present. I usually dislike this type of structure but Modesitt handles it perfectly, balancing the development of character, plot and setting perfectly. Towards the end of this section, the main conflict has been set up, and the last 200 pages are a page-turner leading to a very satisfying conclusion. The novel has a large number of similarities with "Archform: Beauty", another excellent stand-alone by Modesitt Jr.

2 out of 5 stars Miss This One.......2004-07-17

Every description and review I've seen on this book calls it an 'action' novel. For the most part, this book doesn't contain 'action' as defined by normal human beings -- it's a book about the owner of a 'television' network. The climax of the book revolves around controversial news stories being broadcast to the public. Modesitt's next action/adventure novel will probably be about the exciting life of a Certified Public Accountant. Readers will be thrilled as our protagonist audits the corporations of the 'bad people' -- fighting off legions of paralegals as they try to serve him with injunctions to stop his heroic efforts to save the world from greedy CEOs.

Not only is the plot pretty bad but Modesitt is starting to show a remarkable lack of imagination. I can summarize the base characters and story elements of pretty much every one of his books that I've ever read in just a few lines. The protagonist is always a *very* mild-mannered man. He doesn't partake of strong drink -- only teas and fruit juices. We know this because the reader is treated to elaborate descriptions of *several* meals in every book that I can recall -- I sometimes wonder if Modesitt moonlights as a restaurant reviewer. Our protagonist starts out alone, but somewhere fairly early on in the book, he finds his soulmate. There will be a minor subplot for the remainder of the story of them dancing around whether or not they're truly meant for each other. The soulmate always has a distinctive fragrance about her which will be brought up several times throughout the story (perhaps Modesitt dabbles in perfume marketing as well). There's "something special" about the protagonist, but he always considers himself to be just an ordinary individual. He's also generally disliked by a significant number of people because of some sort of stereotyping against his profession or origin. The story will consist of large amounts of philosophizing as our protagonist ponders the problems inherent in the world in which he lives and whether it's possible to find solutions. He will experience a continually escalating set of attacks by his enemies throughout the story, and the climax will come when he personally takes what seems to be extreme actions of a morally questionable nature that cause the deaths of innocent people along with the guilty. Did he have to do that? Maybe -- or maybe not.

            5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one.......2003-02-02

It's a while since I've had so much fun reading an SF mystery/adventure yarn. This is a masterfully crafted work. You're into it from the first page, and it doesn't slow down or let up the rest of the way (and THAT's a satisfying 460 pages).

What's more, Modesitt manages to cram more action/suspense per page than one usually expects, so there's none of those boring "filler" passages one sometimes has to suffer through while looking for the next place where something actually happens, not in this book. The book is structured into numerous short chapters, each a compact and attention-grabbing little story, all strung together to make up the larger story. And the mystery element just keeps building up.

To top it off, it's not just a dumb space opera action novel, but the intelligent and thought-provoking work we've come to expect of Modesitt.

5 out of 5 stars What Sci Fi was designed to do..........2002-07-15

On the surface, The Octagonal Raven is a compelling, intelligent thriller. It can be read as such. However, this story is far more than that. Modesitt satirically blows up the flaws in our society and uses them for a greater purpose. He picks on the alarming bias of 24/7 news channels, strikes at the elitist medical system in our world, and allows the reader to consider many other social issues. The Octagonal Raven is an exciting and suspenseful science fiction novel. Modesitt has truly evolved into a pivotal and important writer of the new millenium.

              Book Description

Author and entertainer Carnie Wilson brings you To Serve with Love, a beautiful, inspirational, lifestyle cookbook that's a celebration of our love affair with cooking, as well as the enjoyment we get out of eating meals that have been prepared for us. This book will stir up universal feelings about food, life, love, and having the "home-plate" advantage because—yes, it's true—anyone can be a good cook! In other words, dinner out is fine, but the real culinary adventure starts in our kitchens.

The recipe portion of this cookbook is suited for anyone who loves comforting, delicious meals. It also features lower-fat or lower-sugar variations of some of these outstanding dishes. Of course, a cookbook shouldn't just be just a list of meals. Carnie also sets the entire scene with music, candles, and flowers—the little, inexpensive, but meaningful touches that round out the perfect dining experience.

5 out of 5 stars Brimming with charm and personality, good recipes, and at a great price.......2007-06-23

I remembered Carnie Wilson from the heyday of the Wilson sisters' group (Wilson Phillips?) - in the music videos, she was the one who was startingly heavy compared to her cohorts. I felt a bit sorry for her; WP was a fine little group, but they had the commercial life span of a may fly, and I couldn't help but wonder how the typical "post success doldrums" of the typical pop star would affect a young lady who already obviously had health and emotional issues with food.

Well, here's the answer: she got her act together, changed her life for the better, and seems to have carved out a niche as a writer and spokesperson for life after gastric bypass surgery. And an excellent job she does of it too.

This isn't really a diet book, and only it's only partially a book about how a person who has had the surgery continues to deal with diet and food issues (Wilson has dealt with that at length in two other memoirs). This is a book about the love of food, and cooking, and how they contribute to the quality of life. As such, I love it. Wilson's prose and recipe texts may gush a little too much (she makes Rachel Ray sound like a Hindu penitent by comparison), but it's a real pleasure going through these pages.

This is a good looking book too. Simple, uncluttered layout and design, great food photography...it just feels "generous" somehow, and I was amazed at the low cover price - even with the limited number of recipes here, I expected "To Serve With Love" to cost at least another $5.00 to $10.00.

All of the recipes here are worth making, but I have to point to one special recipe, an appetizer titled "Robin's Hot Meat" (no dirty jokes please), which is worth the price of the book practically by itself. It's simple but brilliant, and a lot of people are convinced I'm a brilliant cook (and trust me, I'm not) just because I've brought it to a pot luck or a birthday party, where it tends to evaporate in about 5 minutes.

A very nice book to have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly VERY GOOD!.......2006-03-10

This is a great cookbook! Interesting recipes (Viva Las Veggies, Dreamy Creamy Baked-Tomato Crostini) yet basic ones too (mac & cheese, split-pea soup). Yummy too! I'm looking forward to making the banana wonder bread w/banana frosting. Many recipes come with a story from Carnie. Lots of pictures of the food. Nice glossy paper. Great price for such a nice book. I will note, this is NOT a low-calorie, low-carb, low-fat book. I didn't buy it for those reasons. I love good tasting food, I don't have a weight problem, I just don't overeat. So don't knock Carnie for not writing a "diet cookbook".

2 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped it would be!.......2006-01-17

I looked through this book at a local bookstore since I figured it would have at least a section on post op gastric bypass surgery recipes. Well, unfortunately, it did not. All recipes looked wonderful but definitely not low-carb. Might be at least part of the reason why she has gained a lot of her weight back?!

5 out of 5 stars Creative, varied and good for entertaining.......2005-11-06

Excellent for someone having a dinner party or holiday dinners/brunches. I am really pleased with this book, many varied recipes with lots of useful dishes categorized by course; appetizer, breakfast, dessert, etc.. Internationally influenced comfort food with companion "skinny" recipes for the very rich ones (and there are lots of those). Very attractive presentations in a beautiful book that belies its tiny pricetag. Full of color photos, fun to read and well organized. Nice Christmas present.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise, XLNT for the Holidays!!!! .......2005-11-06

I wasn't sure what kind of book this would be. So,first of all, this is NOT a diet cookbook, far from it! Although she included many "Skinny" low fat or low carb versions of her recipes in this book (they look really good), I'm not going to be making the "skinny" versions, HAHA! I saw Diane Sawyer swooning over the "Fall To Your Knees Mac & Cheese" that Carnie prepared on Good Morning America, actually, the whole crew was going nuts, so, how bad could this be?" I ordered it and it's TERRIFIC! FIVE STARS, I couldn't be more pleaasantly surprised, I have "folded the page" to mark MOST of the recipes, my poor book is mutilated. I have already tried seven recipes (mind you, I've only had the book a few days)and 100% of those are going into my file for holiday entertaining. The seven recipes I've made so far are: "Butternut Bruschetta" (OHMYGOD with toasted walnuts, port, cream cheese, sage, beautiful for Thanksgiving...), "Fall to your Knees Mac & Cheese" (it is so over the top, it's like a last meal for mac & cheese addicts),"Fresh Pear Cheesecake" (easy and impressive, looks like it's from a pastry shop) "Mini Corn Souffles" (EASY made in 4 oz muffin pan and served warm with a dollop of sour cream, salsa or guac as hor's d'oeuvres,) "Hungarian Pork Chops" (Rich and complex, good for cold weather), Wasabi Deviled Eggs (3 ingredients + garnish and looks and tastes amazing) and a fresh vegetable chopped salad with southwestern flavors called "Viva Las Veggies" that I just made and can't stop eating. ALL of these recipes are colorful, pretty and appropriate to serve to guests. There are a few fun and kitsch-y 1950's style "Back Of The Box" recipes that I would categorize as secret pleasures, but many more are sophisticated appetizers; tapas, bruschetta, desserts, brunch dishes, entrees, etc. that are quick prep and IMPRESSIVE presentations..it is VERY broad ranging and a beautiful book plus it's FUNNY to read, Carnie is quite a character! This book is downright handy for the working "foodie" who wants to serve something special but is on a tight schedule. The recipes are ALL do-able, nothing crazy, nothing boring, no impossible recipes either. Much of it is "comfort food", but comfort food from a hipper, more sophisticated place, with more trendy influences than you would find in a typical down home style cookbook. It's as if Paula Deen married Mario Batali and moved to Malibu. The large chapters of Appetizers and Desserts are what I need for the holidays as it is my year to have the family dinners. I'll definitely be giving these books as gifts this year, especially in my office. What else costs $13.57, looks like it cost $50.00 (this book is huge, 12" X 10" with a separate glossy bookcover, gorgeous, full-page, color photo on every other page, not typical for a book at this price point, it's SO well done, I hope this was a BIG printing because I'm ordering more). I'm really enthusiastic about this book both as a cooking resource and as a Xmas gift, it's not gender specific and it rocks..LOVE IT!!!!!!! Thanks, Carnie, you're full of surprises!
