edge of seat.......2007-09-28
WOW! I had never heard of Kay Hooper until one night I was at work and bored, so I went to the library of the retirement home. I saw this book an figure, "Eh, why not" I could not put it down, I didnt want to do my job! I borrowed it and read it in 2 days, I can not wait to read another Kay Hooper book. I am a John Sandford fan, and I am sorry to even say this but I read one of his books after hers and just found it to be not as thrilling. I wanted more of Kay Hooper. While reading her book, I was jumpy at every sound. Great book!
Delusional moron fodder.......2006-07-17
Books like this are clearly designed for distracted or stupid people. Every character is as depthless as an acronym, and the "psychic" dimensions are juvenile. If I want true escapism from reality, I cannot be reminded constantly how hokey and brain-dead the entire thing is. If the Communists burned books like this one, I might join the party.
Sense of Evil is a psychic Sense-ation!.......2006-07-13
Kay Hooper's Sense of Evil keeps you in suspense up to the very end. Hooper brings back her special team of psychic investigators, including the mysterious Bishop. In this novel, the main character Agent Isabel Adams leads a team to a small town to catch a serial killer whose victims have three things in common--they're all beautiful, successful...and blond. And so is Isabel.
Knowing that she could be targeted by a crazed killer, Isabel `links up' with the town Sheriff, Rafe Sullivan. And sparks fly! Literally. While women begin to disappear, Rafe and Isabel fight their obvious attraction while searching for a killer who eludes them, a killer who is much closer than they suspect.
Kay Hooper gives us a volatile mix of romance, danger, murder, fast-paced suspense, and a cast of intriguing yet somewhat complicated characters. As author of another psychic suspense series (the Divine series featuring Agent Jasi McLellan), I was curious to see how another author handles the aspects of psychic investigations. Hooper does this with visionary ease. Kudos to Kay!

Ridiculous........2006-02-05
I confess, I thought this was my first Kay Hooper...but when shelving it, I found a romance of hers I'd read at some point.
This book had lots of problems for me. Certainly I can accept the premise of psychics solving crimes. It seems that for all their ability (and the hero's "new found" ability-come ON!) they didn't actually use any of their abilities to solve the crime. Conveniently, the characters' abilities also seemed to change (going from clairvoyant, to precognitive, to empath, to...oh, shucks, now it's all blocked LOL) whenever it seemed the ability-du-jour was in any remote danger of being put to use. This effectively negated the entire concept of the book!
Seems to me the married couple who started up this FBI unit were the ones that should have been on the case, since their abilities were so developed and accurate...and especially since they were even able to specifically predict the danger to the agents they sent. That's smart. Catching a 18+ time serial killer warrants more than a couple of out-of-control trainees. Give me a break. Oh! But they DID happen to send a lady whose abilities included accurately being able to detect if someone else is psychic. That made GREAT sense to have her sit there in a hotel-waiting to point out other random psychics should the need arise-when there's a serial killer on the loose and even the men are running around armed to the teeth.
Please, please tell me that police forces in these United States actually perform background checks and psychological testing. When considering the premise of what caused the killer's behavior, such a tragic event (involving six female deaths) might have popped up on someone's radar screen in the supposed no-stone-unturned search involving the FBI and all the resources available to them. DUH.
Kay Hooper had no clue where this book was going. The means to get to the end were RIDICULOUS, and the end...well, nifty concept but by then I didn't care.
I'm rather angry that I wasted my time on this. Hooper is a prolific author and I'm told some of her books are great...so I'll give her another shot.
What an end!.......2005-09-26
The paranormal story in this book will keep you reading and thrilling you. At some parts of the book KH will try to do something that couldn't be possible, but she never did. So at least everything in this book could be "real". I won't tell you what is because I will tell you the spooky story. The problem with this book is the end of it. I think that KH didn't know how to end it and she asked one of her offspring to do it. This end is among the poorest ends I've ever read.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive, and Thorough.......2005-02-26
Books about the History of Ideas usually raise the ire of Conservative Christians; this book is no exception. However, it provides a very good analysis of the concept of Satan over time. The Conservatives who pretend to be Christian, whilst eschewing some books like this one, have no qualms in titling a very pro-Republican book THE GREAT RIGHTWING CONSPIRACY so that they can attract, or annoy people of differing political persuasions.
This work is a must read for those who want to start understand the form of conceptual interpretation about the nature of evil. As to what is actually behind the evil in the world, I think this book makes no pretense to understand that; it does enlighten on what the conservative, rabid-christian enclaves have placeD into popular culture and how it has fared over time.
An excellent book.
to the brink, but no further.......2002-01-28
[...]
So we reach the denouement, and Mr. Delbanco describes the previous world--in which we still had imagination, rather than pure reason--but
then concludes :
Although there would be a certain satisfaction in living imaginatively in such a world, on balance it is probably a good thing
that we have lost it forever. Whether we welcome or mourn this loss, it is the central and irreversible fact of modern history
that we no longer inhabit a world of transcendence. The idea that man is a receptor of truth from God has been relinquished,
and replaced with the idea that reality is an unstable zone between phenomena (unknowable in themselves) and innumerable
fields of mental activity (which we call persons) by which they are apprehended. These apprehensions are expressed through
language, which is always evolving, and which constitutes the only reality we recognize. Our world exists in the ceaseless
movement of human consciousness, a process in which the reception of new impressions is indistinguishable from the production
of new meanings: 'mind's willful transference of nature, man, and society--and eventually of God, and finally of mind itself--
into itself.'
Where Mr. Delbanco had begun by telling us "we cannot do without some conceptual means for thinking about the sorts of experiences that
used to go under the name of evil," now he tells us that instead :
[T]he story I have tried to tell is the story of the advance of secular rationality in the United States, which has been relentless
in the face of all resistance. It is the story of a culture that has gradually withdrawn its support from the old conception of a
universe seething with divine intelligence and has left its members with only one recourse: to acknowledge that no story about
the intrinsic meaning of the world has universal validity.
From here on, things get really muddled, as having just surrendered to a worldview that even he has acknowledged leaves us with a gaping
void in our lives and fuels our inhumanity toward one another, we next find him telling us that the "party of secular humanism, of which I
consider myself a member, has deluded itself into believing that human beings can manage without any metaphor at all" and then that "the idea
of evil is not just a metaphor that 'some people find...useful'; it is a metaphor upon which the health of society depends."
This really leaves him no other option but to try and construct a secular metaphor for evil. Tellingly, he turns to (and apparently misinterprets)
St. Augustine for help. He says that St. Augustine rejected the idea that evil could be objectified (as Satan or as some other person or group of
people), and instead identified evil as 'an essential nothingness.' Mr. Delbanco has decided that the "nothingness" of which this version of evil
consists is a kind of absence of sufficient love for others in our own hearts. Of course, the objections to this idea are too numerous to address
completely, but a few will do. First, having rejected the idea of universal truths, how does Mr. Delbanco decide what actions are evil to begin
with? What is wrong with the Holocaust or the Killing Fields or Jim Crow if there are no universally valid meanings of good and evil?
Second, note that by defining evil as an absence of something you, in effect, deny the existence of evil. The lack of something can not be that
thing. Hunger is the lack of food, not the absence of hunger. Third, when St. Augustine spoke of evil as a lack of something he didn't mean
some generic kind of thing, but the absence of good, or godliness. Unfortunately for Mr. Delbanco, when he earlier in the book disposed of
universal truths and of evil, he necessarily threw the concept of good away too. Fourth, the very essence of the story of Man's Fall is that evil
lurks within us all. Strongly held religious beliefs may sometimes lead to unfortunate prejudices, and they will necessarily lead us to harsh, but
often just, judgments about the behavior and beliefs of others, but Judeo-Christian (which is to say American) religious beliefs also recognize
the evil that is an immutable part of our own souls. In the words of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn :
If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds and it were necessary only to separate them
from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being.
And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart.
In his purblind secular humanist resistance to even his own analysis, Mr. Delbanco simply can not admit the power, never mind the truth, of
the Judeo-Christian metaphor, that Man is Fallen, and has within him not only the capacity but the barely controlled (and not always
controlled) desire to do evil to his fellow men. It is important too to note that this metaphor lies at the heart of conservatism but must be utterly
rejected by liberalism, for if Man is not essentially good, then, all things being equal, he can not be trusted to behave well, as all philosophies
of the Left assume that he will. Mr. Delbanco's political philosophy lies smoldering in the same ash heap as his attempted metaphor.
And so, Mr. Delbanco concludes :
My driving motive in writing [this book] has been the conviction that if evil, with all the insidious complexity which
Augustine attributed to it, escapes the reach of our imagination, it will have established dominion over us all. ...
I have felt compelled to insist that Satan, always receding and always sought after, has had two very different meanings
in our history. Sometimes he has been used for the purpose of construing the other as a monster, and sometimes...he
has been a symbol of our own deficient love, our potential for envy and rancor toward creation. Since the experience
of evil will not go away, one or the other of these ways of coping with it sooner or later always comes back.
The former way--evil as the other--is, at least at first, physically rewarding. The latter way--evil as privation--is much more
difficult to grasp. But it offers something that the devil himself could never have intended: the miraculous paradox of
demanding the best of ourselves.
As near as I can tell, the suggestion here is that the religious metaphor for evil gives us racism, xenophobia, sexism, homophobia, etc., but that
his secular metaphor shows us that all we really need is more--more love, more stuff, more whatever... In the end, Mr. Delbanco has achieved
nothing more than to bring us back to where we started. Having started out by telling us that we can't exist without having a framework by
which we understand evil, he ends by offering one that, though compatible with his science, is totally inadequate to our needs.
Mr. Delbanco is fond of citing examples from popular culture, but there's one artifact that he's somehow missed : The Exorcist. It's absence
from this book is particularly noticeable because his predicament so resembles that of the hero. If you'll recall, Father Damian has lost his faith
in God, but is suddenly confronted by a monstrous evil. As he gradually comes to believe that the evil is a manifestation of Satan, so too is he
able to once again believe in God, and this gives him the strength of will to defeat the evil. In a strange way, it takes acceptance of the
antithesis to restore his faith in the thesis.
But really, it's not so strange; if you accept that evil is real, how can you not accept that good is real? And if pure reason suggests that these
are merely words, just definitions and not realities, but every fiber of your being tells you that they exist and that you can differentiate the one
from the other and that one is preferable to the other, then who will not choose to believe and who will not choose good over evil? And having
just this once chosen to doubt the efficacy of reason and its baneful cosmogony, mightn't we eventually be willing to make a kind of Pascal's
Wager and once again embrace the transcendent wisdom of the religious metaphor, despite its superstitious taint? If subjecting ourselves to
the thralldom of reason leaves us abandoned in a world that we find atavistic and repulsive, mightn't we choose to view reason as a useful but
limited tool, ultimately incapable of explaining existence or our purpose in life to our satisfaction? It may be true that the "beliefs" that most of
us hoi polloi share and upon which Western Civilization was erected are not an option for the "thinking people" with whom Mr. Delbanco
consorts, but if he is so unhappy with the option they've chosen instead, perhaps the problem lies not in our "beliefs" but in their "thinking".
GRADE : C
who is to blame?.......2001-05-28
This book was obviously titled to sell books and not explain what the book is about. First the book talks about the history of slavery in the United States. The author seems to talk forever about slavery. From this point the author talks in circles about the blame game. Since our society does not believe in the devil as we once did, we have diseases and disfunctions to blame for the evil we do. The author is right in his presumption that people people look for and need a scapegoat. The author argues that satan served as one easy scapegoat for all that is wrong with the world. The rules of socirty have went askew since Satan died. As a result the author argues we hunger to get the devil back. Because the book talks in circles for so long about the same vaguely realted points, I would only recommend this book as a paperweight or a reference for hardcore fans on the subject. It is merely stating what most already know.
A great synthesis of History and Literature.......1998-12-15
This book takes an interesting look at the way in which the modern world has steadily lost its fear of perpetual damnation since we have begun to pull ourselves out of the pit of a lost history. And, in some regard, Delbanco's thesis holds strong. He points out that the loss of fear and belief in the idea or actuality of Satan (depending on how you look at it) has steadily lost its power since the pilgrims landed on the proverbial Plymouth Rock. This book looks at various ideas about fear, evil and modern cynicism, and it leaves the reader with a choice that seems somewhat miniscule at first, but monumental in the long run: What are we to believe about a concept of evil when our Norh American culture works so hard to rid the world of it? Delbanco points to the rise in trully horrific and violent forms of entertainment in the past century.
Overall, it's a great book, with a lot of insight into who we are. Probably, it will be better recieved by religious liberals than cynics and fanatics.

Iask is it Cole or not Cole? That is the question........2005-02-12
This is the sixth volume in the DC Archives series of Plastic Man reprints from Police Comics and Plastic Man. Covering Plastic Man #5 & 6 and the Plastic Man stories from Police Comics #s 59 to 65. The madness continues but there is a question of credit where it is due.
At this time in his career Jack Cole was busy. By all accounts he was an artist who liked to do it all from drawing to inking to lettering but at this point in his career he had to turn his creation over to other hands (just like Will Eisner turned his beloved creation the Spirit into Cole's hands while Eisner went into the army during World War II).
The trouble is that in the golden age of comics many times records were not kept of who did what (not until Marvel where the creators were promoted were their credit boxes in every story and even then people still debate who inked Fantastic Four #1 in 1961). When you view the content pages very few of the stories have credits for the reason I sited.
None the less the army of creators Cole employed to do the job were more than up to the task. From battling babies to femme fatales. From evil magicians to Woozy's (Plastic Man's W.C.Fields like sidekick) the pace moves fast, furious and whacky with the occasion bit of pathos thrown in. Some of the stories almost seem like motion picture cartoons magically captured on paper.
The best thing about the reprints in this volume is other than some of the fashions they stand the test of time and do not seem dated today which is one of the tests of great fiction or art.
Well worth it.

ABSolutely worth a look........2007-09-23
This book reminds me a lot of "Body For Life." It has a very workable plan to lose weight and the diet and exercise strategies are clearly laid out and explained in sufficient detail. Readers will find plenty of pictures too of the exercises that they are instructed to do. Motivational in nature, it's laid back writing style should appeal to many. Readers who like this book might also be interested in The Sixty-Second Motivator to help keep up their motivation to diet. Good luck!
Abs Diet is an easy lifestyle.......2007-09-20
This is an easy to follow, straightforward eating and exercising lifestyle. It is not a diet, but a smart way to eat to maintain a healthy weight and great for your overall well-being. I had followed the same guidelines as outlined in Men's Health magazine and lost over 100lbs.to bring me to a normal weight and 6% body fat.
Good Insight.......2007-09-18
I like the fact that the authors explain how things work in our bodies (how protein intake relates to the increased metabolism resulting from the workout, and to the muscle growth; which foods are good for metabolism; which of them aid in weight loss or lowering cholesterol levels). Although the idea of having six meals a day does not always fit my busy schedule, the one of snacking with fruits and/or nuts between main meals does seem to be effective in my case. What I like most about the book is the well balance diet that does not exclude any food groups. I am a great believer in the nourishment based on natural foods and The Abs Diet fully supports this belief. Dr. Tombak in the book "Can We Live 150 Year" farther explains proper food combination and its effect on our bodies. For that reason his book is a very good addition to The Abs Diet.
Confused about the low fats.......2007-09-16
The book overall is good, but the sections about eating fats confused me.
First he talks about the 1980's war against fat, and he says they were wrong, and that fats are good because without fats you cannot get your fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K. I agree. But, then he says saturated fats are bad, and saturated fats are in milk and meat which is also the best protein sources. So I just want to know why he is advocating low fat when he says low fat diets are bad. He does recommend olive oil, nuts and fish because of the fats in those. I believe that whole dairy is better for you than skim, because it's more natural and less processed. Altering natural foods is what got us into trouble in the first place.
I do understand about choosing leaner meats because we fatten the cows by feeding them way too many grains and it increases their fat deposits, which is unnatural.
Also he recommends eating lunch meat, and lunch meat has an awful lot of chemicals, unfortunately.
I would have liked a recommendation of what to look for in a whey protein powder, because I had never purchased any before.
Excellent source on nutrition..........2007-09-12
I am a subscriber of Men's Health magazine and am very familiar with the author. I know this author is excellent. This book explains, in great detail, nutrition and how the body processes food. It also provides rather basic excercises that anyone can do. Yep, I need to lose weight about 20 pounds. I am not a big "restrictive diet" person becuase I have tried them and failed in the long run. What this book really is about is eating better(more healthy), changing our eating habits and excercising - very basic. It gives you a diet plan to follow which is rather easy...eat six small balanced meals a day to keep your metabolisim running. This book heavily emphasizes custom "smoothies" (all with whey protein in them) as regular meal substitute but, personally, I am not a shake/smoothie fan. I am not a big fan of "cold" food either. Luckily the book gives you recipes for "hot" food you can make and they are easy to make. Please be aware that you need to excercise often if you use the shakes becuase of the whey protein and peanut butter in some of them. If you don't you will get even fatter.
Monotony is also a problem with diets so I also recommend the "6 minute meals for 6 packs abs book" as well. It gives you even more recipes. Realistically I can't imagine getting 6 pack abs in 6 weeks. I can see an already skinny person who might have gained a few pounds to accomplish this in that time frame but heavier people will take longer.
Overall it is a great read and helps you form a base for healthy eating and excercising.

Customer Reviews:
lovely.......2001-11-20
This is a lovely book, though I haven't yet tried many of the recipes. I use it not only for the recipes, but also for ideas on what to grow in my garden. It's also changed the way I cook corn: the roasted corn and garlic soup started me roasting corn in the husk instead of boiling it. Delicious!
The Best of Fruits and Veggies.......1999-09-29
I started frequenting my local farmer's market after a stint living in Greece, where shopping at the open-air stalls taught me how good produce COULD be. This book is a treasure for anyone who has access to great veggies or grows their own; divided by season, it's full of delicious recipes showcasing produce at its very best.
Everything I've made from here has been very good; I have a pot of the yellow split-pea soup with squash and kale in the refrigerator right now. I also really like the turnip and turnip greens soup, which lets you use both good things together. And then there's roasted asparagus, which I must make at least once a month throughout asparagus season.
The only reason I haven't given this book five stars is because there are too many things here I would not make. Fletcher's recipes can be a little too "restauranty" -- too elaborated, too many strongly flavored ingredients canceling each other out. Still, for magnificent food photography and good eating, plus nice tips on how to choose the best of the market, this book is hard to beat. A good addition to any cook's shelf -- and if it inspires you to patronize your local farmer's market, so much the better!
Excellent, mouth watering (from a ex-Berkeley foodie).......1997-07-27
