Finally, inevitably, everything comes to a bloody climax at the Squire's Reckoning, where the villagers gather each Lady Day to feast and pay old debts. Not even the three lawmen's presence can change the course of history... though one of them is to find the course of his own personal history changed forever.

Not like any village mystery you've ever read before!.......2007-04-19
I've said it many times, and I will say it again - Reginald Hill is one of the best authors out there in this genre today. His characters are really remarkable - both the ones we see every time, plus the new ones that he introduces with each book. In this book it's easy to tell that Mr. Hill is having us on for a bit of a romp, but that does not diminish the pure joy of reading this book. It is a book where as Fat Andy says, that no one has gotten killed, no one has been arrested either even though there seemed to be a spate of crime in the wonderful little village of Enscombe, but they will have two or maybe three marriages, and everyone appears to live happily ever after. And another reason why I enjoyed this book so much is because of the close-up that we get of Wield. He is one of my very favourite characters, and we get to see lots of him in this rollicking book. What a pleasant surprise this book was! I loved it!

Seriously, just take my word for it. DO NOT read any reviews. DO NOT read the book jacket. DO NOT so much as glance at a blurb. It wouldn't be any fun if you knew anything (let alone everything) about what happens, right? Right. So Step 1: Start reading the novel. Now, you might find yourself thinking, But this isn't my kind of mystery at all. Which brings us to Step 2: KEEP READING. (Step 3 is completely optional: You can thank me later.)
Pictures of Perfection.......2006-11-10
If you've never read any of Reginald Hill's Dalziel and Pasco series and you're not obstinately set on beginning with the first one, or if you just like belly laughs, try Pictures of Perfection. Our story opens in Enscombe, a picture-perfect Yorkshire village that time has forgot, until now. The vicarage is for sale, the hall is overrun by tourists, and the students are mobilizing for Iwo Jima. No, not really, and no matter how dire these matters seem to the Enscombians there isn't a lot for a practicing policeman to do about them. Then a policeman goes missing. Enter Detective Superintendent Andrew Dalziel, Detective Chief Inspector Peter Pasco, and Detective Sergeant Wield, aka Wieldy (the best nickname in crime fiction) to save the day. More or less. The longest shaggy dog story ever.
Read also Hill's The Wood Beyond, another Dalziel and Pasco novel in a much more serious vein which achieves the level of art. And all right, since you insist -- the first in the series is A Clubbable Woman.
This one starts with several bangs..........2005-12-31
Reginald Hill is usually such a funny writer. This time he didn't start with funny; he started with horror as an entire town seemingly is shot by what can only be a deranged madman. A 'berserker'...and Hill seamlessly sews up a story that not only has the reader come in after or as the crime is being committed, but one that leads the reader to the wrong conclusion about the crimes committed and as to whom is committing the crimes.
Of course, 'Fat Andy' is all there in his sartorial wonder, so is a younger Pascoe and a much more involved Wield. This book has Wield meeting his rather 'stuffed shirt' mate, Digweed, so that is one social mystery reconstructed for me. Have they put this series on in England. If not, someone should hurry up and do it, so we Americans can laugh ourselves out of our misery concerning our politics and the war...

Witty and charming fun.......2005-11-28
Hill's Dalziel & Pascoe novels cover the range from light-hearted whimsy to dark and savage psychological studies. This one starts with what appears to be something straight out of the dark end of the range, but is actually one of the gentler books in the series, a true English village cosy -- though with Hill's own unique slant on things. It's a good book for fans of Detective Sargeant Wield, who not only gets to be the lead character for once, but has some interesting developments in his personal life by the end. No previous knowledge of the series is required, although you'll probably enjoy the book even more if you already know these characters.
As always, the beautifully crafted language is a delight, and the sly humour had me laughing out loud much of the time. Jane Austen fans should love this homage to her dissection of English village life. This is a mystery book that is well worth reading for the sheer joy of the story, whether or not you can follow the plot the first time around -- and the plot is sufficiently convoluted that I didn't follow it in places. There's more than enough there to make for satisfying subsequent readings, even when the mystery is solved.

BATTLE ROYAL FOR 80S GOTHAM.......2003-11-23
Batman may have met his match in the KGBeast, a rogue Soviet super-assassin with a 10-man Gotham hitlist and a death-arsenal of every move, counter-move, and weapon there is. Originally released as a landmark "series within a series" when the Cold War was in its death throes, "Ten Nights of the Beast" is an admittedly retro thriller, but one no less--and perhaps even more--suspenseful for it. Writer Jim Starlin infuses this fast-moving "black game" (the Beast's own words) with some great set pieces and enough daredevil drama to satisfy any Bat-fan, while veteran Batman illustrator Jim Aparo's drawings bring the excellent script to life. Jason Todd is still Batman's sidekick in this late 80s saga, and he's a good enough Robin that it's hard to remember just why everyone wanted him to bite the bullet so bad. And even though the KGBeast himself is off-scene most of the time, Starlin's mastery of dialogue and detail infuse the killer with more life than decades of writers have been able to do with some other villains from the Caped Crusader's rogues' gallery. The denouement may not be quite as shocking to today's bloodthirstier comics fans as it was when it first hit the bookstores, but it's still a satisfying and surprising conclusion to one of the most exciting Batman stories ever. "Ten Nights of the Beast" is currently out of print, but will surely be re-available in a future best-of collection of Batman classics.
Batman in the Cold War........2002-09-14
Tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union were high, right up to 1989, when freedom rang throughout all of Europe and the Iron Curtain came crumbling down. The edgy suspense of the times were incorporated in comics and Batman lore, giving rise to the KGBeast. The KGBeast is the complete anthisis of Batman, instead of an armed detective who works to save lives, the Beast is an armed detective who works to take lives. He was the best assasin the KGB ever produced, but like many experiments, something went wrong and he began taking things into his own hands. Nothing seems able to prevent him from knocking off his hit list one by one and the last name on the list, is the President of the United States. Only, the Beast never expected for a Bat to fly in his way. Interesting story, somewhat dated because of the Cold War theme, yet that's also what makes it so intriguing.
The Batman at his best!.......1998-03-18
Another great 80s tale of the Batman by Starlin and Aparo. The Batman's lore fully incorporates the Cold War and the U.S.'s staunch tensions with the Soviet Union. The KGBeast is Batman's antithesis, his exact polar opposite, and one of the most creative and cunning villains every to grace comic bookdom's pages.
An excellent Cold War story........1997-06-10
"Ten Nights of the Beast" is an excellent portrayal of Cold War tensions from a comics standpoint.The Beast was particularly well-characterized, achillingly fanatic character who will stop at nothing to accomplish his goals. In addition, the corruption of some of the U.S. officials adds a touch of realism. Overall, a very good book, one that I would recommend to any Batman fan.

I bought this book to get some ideas about setting up a galley for camping and RV trips with my ex and her boys. And we used to try out the recipes at home....actually, we never did try any of these on the road. Hmmm.
Well, I am sure they would work...
Anyway, this is a great book for setting up small galley and throwing down some serious chow. The recipes and the prep recommendations work for asphalt sailors as well as the deep-water folks....except you get to stop and pickup anything you forgot.
If you need a recommendation for your "ONE-PAN". I like:Lodge Logic 3-Quart Pre-Seasoned Chicken Fryer. Ya' just ca't beat cast iron cookware.
