Book Description
The career of playwright Joy Sinclair comes to an abrupt end on an isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands when someone drives an eighteen-inch dirk through her neck. Called upon to investigate the case in a country where they have virtually no authority, aristocratic Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his partner, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, grapple for both a motive and a murderer. Emotions run deep in this highly charged drama, for the list of suspects soon includes Britain’s foremost actress, its most successful theatrical producer, and the woman Lynley loves. He and Havers must tread carefully through the complicated terrain of human relationships while they work to solve a case rooted in the darkest corners of the past and the unexplored regions of the human heart.

Rereading this book after several years. Still a great book and much better than the TV version.
Masterful.......2007-08-09
EG's eye for detail is superb and she deftly weaves a plot of byzantine intricacy against a background of wonderful Scottish scenery and thespian intrigue. So accurate is her narrative that one forgets that it is fiction, and picks up the occasional reference that goes astray - e.g. the Royal Scottish Police helicopter, but that it is truly nit picking. This is a an engaging read that fully entertains and leaves me looking for the next one.
Just as Good as Her First Book.......2006-10-29
Payment in Blood is my 2nd Elizabeth George book but certainly not my last. Besides being a good mystery story, it is also the continuation of Detective Lynley & Havers personal life. While her first novel, A Great Deliverance, focused on the prickly but determined Barbara Havers, this second novel is all about the charming but no less complex partner, Thomas Lynley.
This murder mystery is set in a cold, gray, chilly castle in Scotland where a group of actors and their director are staying so they can work on a play written by the talented writer Joy Sinclair. Unfortunately, Ms. Sinclair is murdered on the very first night of their arrival to the remote castle. A dagger right through her neck, ugh. Scotland Yard is called and all the suspects are locked in a room while Lynley & Havers along with forensic scientist, Simon St. Allcourt gather clues.
What made this story so interesting was the dilema that Detective Lynley faces when it appears that his good friend (aka love interest) Helen Clyde is in the room with the only access to the victim. Is she the killer? Is it the man that she is sleeping with who happens to be the murder victim's cousin. Lynley is conflicted by the desire to protect Helen but also by a burning jealousy to blame her boyfriend. In the pursuit of justice, the lines are a little blurred when Lynley allows this jealousy to get the best of him when he goes after the boyfriend with a vengeance. Is he on the right trail....read Payment in Blood to find out. I can't wait to read her next novel.
Payment In Blood.......2005-09-13
I have not long been a reader of Elizabeth George but in short time I have read every one of her books. I so highly recommend her that I would like to take an ad out for the best writer, of mystery fiction, I've read. I don't care which book you pick up, it will be excellent. And, each book has a surprise ending. I challenge anyone to know what will eventually happen anywhere from page one to 7/8th the way through! No stop, erudite entertainment.
Love + Jealousy + Murder = A Very Complex Investigation.......2005-05-27
Elizabeth George takes the cool Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Lynley and turns his world upside down. For unknown and possibly public relations reasons, Scotland Yard sends Lynley outside of his jurisdiction to Scotland to take over an investigation after a fetching playwright is found murdered in her bed.
But, the guest in the adjoining room is Lynley's much beloved Lady Helen Clyde. To Lynley's chagrin, it turns out that Lady Helen has been sharing her boudoir. Naturally, she must be interrogated. How will Lynley bear up?
Lynley is clearly distraught by dealing with the situation and is soon making big mistakes. How will that affect the investigation? Well, it's not good . . . but fortunately Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers is on duty with Lynley.
Although this is a mystery, the book succeeds more as an investigation into the English class system and its weaknesses. With Barbara Havers standing in for every person in her role as skeptical seeker after truth, we see the rotten underpinnings of having a hereditary elite in place. How far has the rot spread? Well, you'll just have to read the book to find out.
The mystery itself takes some tangled turns that will provide much entertainment.
I graded the book down a bit. Some scenes didn't resonate with my impressions of this character from the last book. I thought that Ms. George had Lynley's head spinning a bit more than seems likely from what we learned about him in A Great Deliverance.
The book is a very important one in the series though. Frequent references in future books are made to the events in this one. You will enrich your enjoyment of future books if you read Payment in Blood.

The Effect of Improving Quality of Life and Retention by Eliminating Public/Private Venture Out-of-Pocket Housing Expenses: The Differential Lease Payment Program at Naval Station Everett, WA
Manufacturer: Storming Media
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Spiral-bound
ASIN: 1423543742 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A724663. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis examines the potential impact of eliminating out-of- pocket housing expenses on the quality of life and retention decisions of Navy families living in public/private venture housing. The Differential lease Payment (DLP) program, an experimental Department of Defense pilot project, is on the verge of implementation at Naval Station Everett, WA. The main research question and hypothesis is that removing out-of-pocket housing expenses will substantially improve quality of life and positively affect reenlistment decisions of the impacted military families. A written questionnaire was administered to 71 military members and spouses living at the Country Manor public/private venture housing complex, and 25 semi-structured interviews were conducted from the 71 person sample. The study revealed at the .01 level of confidence that eliminating out-of-pocket housing expenses will substantially improve quality of life and will likely have a positive effect on reenlistment decisions. A related finding is that eliminating out-of-pocket housing expenses, although important, is less important than improving retirement benefits in terms of motivating reenlistment decisions. Recommendations are to implement the DLP program as soon as possible; improve retirement benefits to maximize retention; and ensure measurement of customer (military family) satisfaction is inte al to all future public/private ventures.

Freddy VS Jason
Movie tie-in
Novelization by Stephen Hand
Based on the screenplay by Damian Shannon and Mark J. Swift
The book based on the screenplay. Let me start by saying, I loved this movie. Now, may I add that reading this book was painful and confusing.
Allow me to explain:
1. The book is from the original screenplay which differs from the movie we all saw. The beginning is very different. But that's about it.
2. There's this thing called POV (point of view), which allows the reader to follow the action and the character. This is hard to do when nearly every paragraph focuses on a someone different. Some writers like Phillip K. Dick can pull this off very well. Unfortunately, Stephen Hand, can not and it is this reason the book sucks. It is so hard to follow.
Now I have that off my chest, let's take a look at the story itself.
In the DVD (movie), the visualization explains everything in seconds, like the boiler room or the construction going on at Camp Crystal Lake. In the movie, I just accepted it and enjoyed the movie. The main reason for buying this book was to see how a slasher was written and how all those movie props were explained. I also wanted to know what those things were called. For this the book excels. It explains the locations and action very well and the Nightmare on Elm Street series, making refs to part 4 (I could be wrong but after seeing so many Nightmares, they all kind of blend in). I also like learning how Freddy became Freddy via the black shadows that promised him eternal life. I also did not know that Freddy went to trail for the murders of little girls and was released. Were these scenes cut from the movies or is my memory just shot? In regards to Jason, I remembered everything mentioned, his past and his reason for existing. I did not know that he was a mommy's boy.
The book remains on Freddy and the kids most of the way through, using them to carry the story. One main point for lovers of this movie and a solid reason to buy and read the book, despite the POV changes, is that the ending explains exactly who wins the battle. The POV jumped like crazy here, one paragraph for Jason, one for Freddy, and our 4 heroes, mainly Will and Laura.
I recommend getting the DVD and the book. Watch the movie on DVD, catch the alternate beginning and then read the book.
I mentioned earlier how well, Stephen Hand described the locations, I feel I should clarify this. Most of the scenes are described well, while with some (especially the party at the cornfield), it is best to see the movie first, it helped a lot.
This is the very first movie tie-in I have ever read and was worried that this is how these types of books are written. I am glad I was wrong. Read some of my other movie tie-in reviews.
Over all rating out of 5: 3
Content, action, description: 4.5
Writing - style and prose: 2
Note: Worthwhile addition to any horror lovers bookshelf, standing next to the DVD.
Now Jason lays him down to sleep..........2004-01-04
FREDDY VS. JASON is a fun film. Released last August, it captured the sensation of the season in perfect fashion; a summer celluloider which offered a relaxed viewing session in a darkened theater at the mall multiplex. The teen crowd was more than content to gather together in adrenaline-fueled groups, hell-bent on spending some of the disposable capital earned at one pitiful retail job or other on the latest hot marketing commodity in the trendy, post-Scream horror industry. Along with the WB-net set were the older demos who grew up with Krueger and Voorhees, the 29-40 age group- mostly male in gender- who've been waiting for the long-promised bit of paranormal pugilism. The two worlds mingled easily enough; and after the lights went up and the 29-40's had their fill of ogling the nubile, Smallville/Everwood-loving girlfriends of all the young guys in attendance, all agreed that a pretty decent project had just unwound itself on the projection platter.
Surprisingly enough, the book is equally as good. Well, in an extremely technical sense, it's a special kind of book- a novelization. And that's important to keep in mind when judging it. A competent novelization should fulfill one primary promise: allow the reader to visit the film again in as vivid a manner as possible with minimal interference (the author shouldn't fool too much with the original plot/concept, in other words). FREDDY VS. JASON succeeds mostly at this. It's a simple, well-organized read which captures all the essential hooks of the source material and efficiently conveys them in literary format. Sure, there are hackeneyed, subpar devices at work- e.g.: the presence of sparse, almost fragmented sentences more apt for a screenplay- but they make sense in the presented context.
There is one genuinely outstanding sequence in the book which should be singled out for its nearly inspired execution- the prologue. It is here where we get a meaty introduction to the sick world of Freddy Krueger, delving into his macabre origins as the bastard son of an abused nun and his ultimate fiery fall at the hands of the parents whose children he so evilly took away from them...and then, his subsequent rise from the dead like a dark phoenix from the corrupt ashes as a supernatural sweater-wearing/knife-gloved psycho who inhabits the ether of dreams, turning all slumber sessions into terrible, vengeful slaughtering grounds where the quirky physics of nightmares yield solid, deadly effects in the real world. It was incredibly satisfying when the writer got into Freddy's mind and exposed it for what it is: diabolical, greedy for death. Later on in the book, we get a chance to peek into Jason's sinister synaptic system- yet another disturbed piece of matter.
For those so inclined, FREDDY VS. JASON is a recommended read. Not going to win a Pulitzer, but that was never the intent anyway. If you're a fan, you'll enjoy it.
Completely artless, entertains tho........2003-10-18
I especially like the way this book ties together the histories of Freddy and Jason in more detail than the movie did. All the past movies are referenced and it all feels more connected.
Plus, this book was taken from the original script and contains a few extra bits that were not in the movie (save the dumb ending) such as Jason attacking Linderman at the rave and the girls in the jeep almost running over Jason when he crosses the road at the cornfields.
Apart from that it's the same as the movie. There's no art in adapting a script into a novel but it's still an interesting read and moves at a fast pace. Tho I was let down by the dumb ending that was totally different from the movie and didn't make sense.
Tip: Don't bother reading this for English class. Like I said twice already; it's artless and not anything you can go deep into.
Only read this if you've seen the movie ~.......2003-10-04
Is the book better than the movie?
In a word. No.
With a different ending than the movie and what would have been an extended scene at the beginning of the movie (welcome to camp crystal lake, ms. skinny dipper). You learn a good bit more of Freddy's trial and murder, about his mother, and the link between Freddy and Westin Hills.
The author did rush through the book though, you often read through many misspelled words (ex: "whate4ver") but you can blame all that on editing. He stayed true to the movie/screenplay, not missing a beat. It's still all in there and not horribly butchered up like some movie tie-ins.
But If you're a fan of either series, and enjoy reading, sure; pick up a copy. It proves to be fun, but not as much fun as the movie of course.

Book Description
Return to Rocheworld is the first of four sequels to the science fiction novel Rocheworld by Robert L. Forward (Baen Books, New York, 1990). The other sequels that follow this one are: Ocean Under the Ice, Marooned on Eden, and Rescued from Paradise. In Return to Rocheworld, the humans from Earth and their multiton jelly-blob alien friends, the “flouwen” from the ocean-covered lobe of the double-planet Rocheworld, fly to the desert-dry lobe of Rocheworld where they discover ancient ancestors of the flouwen, adapted to the harsh life on the dry lobe.
Customer Reviews:
A vehicle for scientific speculation. Fascinating!.......2000-12-02
This is the second title (out of five) in the Rocheworld Saga. The humans sent to Barnard's system discovered intelligent (in the most stringent sense of the word) life on Rocheworld, a weird double planet subject to complex dynamics and tidal forces. These aliens -the flouwen- are aquatic amoeba-like creatures living in the oceans of Eau, one of the lobes of the double planet. The flouwen are centuries ahead of us in Mathematics, but have no technology.
In this book, the flouwen are explored more in depth. We learn about their physiology and social structure. Using human technology, the flouwen get into space for the first time, and help the humans in their exploration of Roche, the second lobe of Rocheworld. Then, two longly-separated evolutionary branches meet again...
As with many other Forward's books, neither plot nor characterization are the strongest points in this novel. However, Forward manages once again to put together so much thought-provoking scientific speculation that makes you forget any other deficiencies.
Having read "Rocheworld" (aka "The Flight of the Dragonfly") before starting this novel is obviously recommended, but I guess one could even get into the story without it.

I generally love Robert L. Forward's work but..........2007-07-12
I am sad to say that this was pretty bad. I couldn't finish it because the characters were so overblown and poorly written.
This was one of his first books and while I HIGHLY recommend virtually everything else he's written, this one was a failure.
Great Hard SciFi.......2005-10-28
Like most of Robert Forward's books, this one is for those who love Science at least as much as fiction. Though the life forms in Rocheworld were not as interesting as those he created in Dragon's Egg, I appreciate the fact that he continued to challenge the idea that all life should be (even remotely) like that on Earth. The idea of a culture far beyond ours intellectually, without the least bit of industry or technology also questions assumptions about what is an "advanced" civilization. But I think my favorite parts of this book were the ideas for long-distance space travel (Forward pioneered the use of solar sails) and the physics of the double-egg shaped world, including the tides and "snow" under the ammonia ocean.
Excellent!.......2005-03-22
"Rocheworld" is one of my all-time favorite sc-fi reads. I am glad Robert L. Forward was able to expand on his original manuscript to make this new improved version of "Flight of the Dragonfly", --retitled "Rocheworld". This book is about light-sail travel to a very far away twin world system that has very original aquatic aliens--a really grand adventure with four sequels to read.
Terrible Book -- Immature Writing.......2003-09-29
To say the least, I'm very upset with the other three reviews here which all gave this book a five star rating. It's just not so. This book is terrible. Essentially, it's like reading a comic book. All the characters are one-sided, extreme caricatures. I got through about page forty (where the main "characters" are picking their crew) before I couldn't take it any more. Every new "character" was a new oddball. I mean, forget about these people being characters in a book. Just think about them as forming a small crew who are going on a one-way mission in a tin can. They'll be en-route for forty years and studying the new system for twenty more. No organization in the universe would pick these people as crew. They wouldn't make it to Mars orbit before they ended up killing each other. Every member of the crew would have been psychologically screened until their brains fell out of their heads. The people who survived that screening and were deemed capable of living in extremely close quarters with a couple of handfuls of other people for the rest of their lives would have trained together for YEARS just to make sure everything was OK. This book is a joke as science fiction. Either that, or it was written for the youth market. Terrible, terrible book. Avoid.
Uniqe aliens. sensitive and smart........2000-05-30
This is the only Robert Forward book i've read, but I would like to try some more. The "Fluben" are the most interesting aliens i've read about except maybe the "Moties" from "The mote in god's eye". They are very diffrent anatomically from human beings ,which is logical ,and they are all mathematical geniuses. They're all brain. that is, their whole body ( which is a cloud of a dense fluid hovering in the ocean )is allso the thinking organ. They can become smaller, tighter and harder, form a "rock" and in that state they are even more smart then usual ( and the usual is something like 400 i.q's ). Another thing about this book is that the aliens and the humans don't fight, they get along and like each other. the opponent is nature. Buy the book, it's an interesting read.

Book Description
Cakewalk showcases and makes available for the first time the superbly decorated cakes that have earned cake decorator and sugar artist extraordinaire Margaret Braun her stellar reputation.
This book contains easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions for constructing fifteen of Braun's greatest creations. In addition to offering the tools and a foolproof decorating method for each featured cake, Braun also provides the creative and culinary background on each of her confections. Each sugar masterpiece is the result of many influences--all of which are conveyed through Braun's own words and an elegant blend of imagery that includes her diverse visual references, magnificently drawn and hand-lettered schematic cake plans, illustrations done in food coloring, and especially commissioned photography by renowned photographer Quentin Bacon.
Braun also reveals her secrets for beautiful cakes, such as achieving the perfect consistency for fillings and icings, mixing colors to get the right hue, and combining colors and motifs successfully. A visual glossary covers every decorative motif featured in the book, describing its creation through clear visuals and easy-to-follow text. The volume also includes Braun's favorite recipes, including basic cakes, an array of icings and ganaches, rolled fondant, pastillage, marzipan, and family recipes like Braun's mother's flourless chocolate cake. Finally, a detailed listing and description of the necessary cake-decorating tools and a sources section round out this definitive work.
Customer Reviews:
I'm on my third copy of this book!!!.......2007-06-03
I've read through several of the other reviews that have stated that this book isn't meant for a beginner; however, when I first began to decorate cakes in culinary school (and I mean I had literally NEVER picked up a piping bag before).
Was I able to decorate a cake like Margaret Braun from reading the book??? Of course not!
I don't think that this was ever the point of the book. The artist, Magaret Braun, tells you to practice, practice, practice!
The more experience that I've gotten, the better I've gotten at decorating cakes.
If you're looking for a book that you can buy and immediately duplicate, then you're not going to find it in this book.
If you're looking for a book that will take you something to strive for, this is it.
Spectacular.......2007-05-31
Es un libro espectacular y excelente, muy bueno, claro, explicativo y bellas fotos. Lo recomiendo a todas las personas que deseen aprender como decorar exoticos y majestuosos pasteles, tortas o biscochos.
It is spectacular and excellent book, descriptive and with beautiful pictures. I recommend it for all people that want to learn how to decorate exotic and majestic cakes.
Amazing.......2007-04-22
This book is amazing, I love this woman. However, this book is NOT for the beginner in cake design. Had I bought it during my novice days, I would have been dissapointed. Now that I know what's going on in cake decorating and design, I understood every single instruction given on this book. I used to beat myself over the head to try to design the most beautiful cake ever. With a few tricks of the trade given by this author, now I can. I am no expert like Margaret is, but my ideas are now flowing. The way she crafts the chalices as cake toppers, it's the most simple way possible. The technique is there, the rest is up to your imagination. I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THIS BOOK. I love it, and I browse it every day to get more inspirations and ideas.
