Book Description

"Like Philip Marlowe, Spenser is a man of honor in  a dishonorable world. When he says he will do  something, it is done. The dialogues zings, and  there is plenty of action... but it is the moral  element that sets them above most detective fiction."  --Newsweek

5 out of 5 stars Sex, drugs and Willie Nelson.......2007-07-07

In this entry in the Spenser series, he is hired by a newspaper when an up-and-coming young reporter - Eric Valdez - is murdered while investigating the cocaine trade in Wheaton, Mass - a small town with a big reputation of being the Miami of the North. When Spenser starts asking around, he finds that no one knows nothing and that the police seem to be spectacularly unhelpful - and they, especially, seem to want him gone. They insist that Valdez's murder was due to his sexual peccadilloes and nothing else, pointing to the bodily mutilation as proof.

Of course, when people want Spenser gone - or when they want him to quit asking questions - that just makes him stick around and ask more questions.

When first the sheriff and then the sheriff's son are murdered - after Spenser catches the son smuggling cocaine, apparently for the town's biggest produce warehouser, named Felipe Esteva - the action begins to really heat up.

Was Eric Valdez killed because he was getting too close to the truth about the drug trade in Wheaton? Or because he was having an affair with the wrong woman? Why were the sheriff and his son killed?

This was a multi-layered and very satisfying book. Things that seem obvious turn out to be red herrings - things that appear to be obvious red herrings turn out to be truth. I loved it. Strong recommend from me!

5 out of 5 stars Pillows Puffed for Wide-eyed Wallowing in Pages of a Plot.......2007-02-15

There's no use trying to use a Spenser novel to conjure or cajole the sandman. Similar to TAMING A SEA-HORSE (#13 Spenser); PALE KINGS AND PRINCES (# 14) kept me up a couple hours in the middle of the night, beyond a silly hope of returning to sleepiness through a short time of reading.

PALE KINGS opened again with the standard realism of the detective doing his walk-alone-deal, accompanied by shiftless boredom and justifiable frustration. In this case, since the food in the rural community in which Spenser was detecting was so limp, and the clue extraction so dentally daunting, the private eye was able to drag/push himself through his solitary shuffles for only 1/4 of the plot before he called in Susan for a weekend visit of Salmon Loaf or Polish Platter at the Reservoir Court motel in Wheaton, Mass.

I was intrigued with Parker's feature in this one of how an individual gets himself seen as such, as a person instead of a thing. His technique of having Spenser gradually thaw out Wheaton's finest citizenry seemed similar to me to his methods of drawing readers into Spenser's games. This time, those games were a town's economic rooting into Columbian Coca/Cocaine, and the class spits accompanying the resulting population stew in Wheaton. As usual, I was mesmerized with Spenser's repartee with criminal codgers, which in this case were the top-of-the-food-chain of Colombian Drug Lords. I was especially impressed with the way the P. I. humanized these guys into seeing him as a worthy person, actually more easily than he set the standard-of-his-humanity with Wheaton's police presence, barkeeps, waitresses, librarians, and regular Joe's.

I wondered if that humanizing ability might be one of the mesmerizing character traits which has kept Spenser cozied within the reading hearts of so many faithful fans. Spenser dedicates himself to making everyone see him as a warm-bodied person, instead of as a bloodless character-stick in a plot of a novel.

Especially in the first scene with Esteva, the Columbian King Pin, PALE KINGS solidified for me one of the main reasons for Spenser's appeal. He's real. Duh? He works on each person in his presence (including the reader), until that person sees him that way.

I've noticed several times in this series (and more so in PALE KINGS), that exchanges between Spenser and his dialogue collections had him describing a person looking away, purposely not looking at him, until he wormed that person into his scene. Now I recall how often Spenser has noted the "covert looks" which Hawk draws out of people. Hawk, too, is real; his essence demands to be experienced as a person of potence as well as presence.

Is this part of what charisma is, a person who sees himself as significant, and therefore causes others to see him that way; a person who won't quit radiating and/or badgering, focusing on others until they LOOK at HIM and SEE him? Maybe, charisma also involves a person like Spenser or Hawk actually SEEING everything they look at, which in turn causes the "objects" or persons of their observations to connect to them as human beings as well?

Reading this novel began to congeal some of the illusive reasons I've searched for to explain my addiction to this detective novel series, especially since I've rarely been drawn, by natural preference (in the past), to read even the best examples of seriously authentic, male private eyes. Along with the mutual-personalization-syndrome noted above, and the mesmerizing ability of the literary style and perfectly-paced-plot drivers which keep me reading in the middle of the night; my addiction seems to involve the philosophical strands of golden threads which labyrinth through Spenser's sensual, sensitive, poetic soul. Each book I read brings up the question, "What key about life's purpose might I be surprised by in this one."

Yet, thankfully, the philosophical, psychological tapestries in the series do not diminish the dedicated dramatization of the basic detecting lifestyle, with its normal daily routines which are often uncomfortable, deprivation-intense, soul-leechingly boring, and inconvenient ... 90% of the time ... with the other 10% being "hairy" with high risk of deadly harm. In this case, the snow-challenged, dangerous denouement scenes in PALE KINGS were unusually complex and hairy, with Hawk, Susan, Caroline, Juanita, and Lundquist (a fantasticly heroic character) adding race, gender, color, Cause, and Creed to Spenser's righting of wrongs, during which we're privy to mesmerizing details of the process of a psychologist (Susan) doing a therapy catharsis.

Another part of Spenser which I came to understand more precisely here (and which I usually welcome with a whoosh of relief) was Spenser's clean means of sidestepping any character's effort to draw him away from true issues in percolation, into potential-black-hole-passions of politically correct causes. As usual, he sidestepped abruptly and adeptly, without dismissing or undermining the actual values in those causes.

Yeah, I suppose Spenser has it all, at least all that I require to continue following a pair of footsteps, in a process somewhat like a P.I. trailing a suspect or a clue.

Sometimes, I do have one.

4 out of 5 stars A dip in the quality of the action, but the dialog is still excellent. .......2006-01-24

An enterprising investigative reporter is killed in Wheaton, Massachusetts, a town known to many as the hub of cocaine traffic for the Northeast. The owner of the paper the reporter worked for hires Spenser to investigate the murder. He goes to Wheaton and gets nowhere at the start. Local police are obviously being bought off and when he asks questions the universal response is "nobody saw nothin." It is obvious who the drug lord is, so in an attempt to move his investigation forward, Spenser hijacks a major cocaine shipment. The son of the police chief was driving the rig, so his actions are of interest to more than just the drug dealers. Spenser then goes to the kingpin and offers to sell the cocaine back to him.
After the police chief and his son are both killed, Spenser befriends the grieving widow and enlists Susan to help her cope with her losses. Hawk is also recruited to help even the odds against Spenser. There is a final battle with Spenser, Hawk and an honest state trooper on one side and the drug dealers with their corrupted cops on the other. In an interesting twist, Hawk has a battle with a man (Cesar) that clearly was his physical superior, had he not held a small gun inside a mitten on his hand and shot first, Cesar would have killed him with his bare hands.
Once again, Spenser wisecracks his way through danger and remains noble in the completion of his job. When the drug lord kills the son of the police chief after Spenser hijacks the cocaine shipment, Spenser personally confronts his mother and only Susan can console him. She makes him understand that it truly was not his fault that the boy was involved in trafficking drugs and she will do what she can to help the woman. In terms of action and intrigue, this book doesn't have as many exciting moments as other Spenser novels. However, the dialog is excellent as always, which is why it still deserves four stars.

4 out of 5 stars Back On Track.......2004-09-21

This one is definitely back on the track. Parker's last two Spenser novels just plain stunk. This would be better if he had managed to lose Selfish Susan permanently, but oh well.

1 out of 5 stars An insult to any intelligent reader.......2003-03-24

I found this book to have little redeeming value. The dialog is particularly crude and the "detective" work is simplistic.

                    5 out of 5 stars Miller's Lost Daredevil Masterpiece.......2003-12-14

This is the Miller Daredevil story that got away. Coming out around the same time as Miller was knocking the socks off of the comic world with the "Born Again" story in the funny book format, this oversize graphic novel slipped under many radars. Like many of Marvel's graphic novel series, this is part of the main character's continuity and follows up on events of Miller's 1st run of DD.
The story actually centers around the Kingpin and his handicapped wife Vanessa. Way back in the old comic run, Vanessa was apparently killed off but survived by taking to the sewers where she was enslaved by a grotesque underground king who ruled over a band of tunnel dwellers. By the time Daredevil intervened and returned his archenemy's wife back home, Vanessa's mind was all but gone. In the "Love and War" story, Kingpin is seeking help for his poor wife, and in his typical heavy handed way, he kidnaps the beautiful (and blind) wife of a famed psychologist to "persuade" the good doctor into helping Vanessa recuperate. The real problem comes in that the Kingpin's henchman for the kidnapping is a truly psychotic and delusional killer who begins to have conflicting fantasies about his lovely victim. The clock is ticking for Daredevil to rescue both the damsel in distress from the psycho and the good doctor from the clutches of the Kingpin before everything hits the fan. Oh, and Turk is along for the ride to offer a little bit of much needed comic relief. Although the story sounds rather simple, it is a pretty intense examination of the true nature of love and the terrible power of obsession. Miller puts one more notch on his billy club with this fantastic tale.
Because the story is drama and character driven more than action packed, Sienkiewicz's fully painted art plays beautifully in the oversize format. This is much cleaner and visually beautiful than his work on Elektra Assassin which he also did with Miller. The panels are larger and there are quite a few full page illustrations that showcase what Bill can do with a brush. The storytelling is also much tighter, driving you through one breathtaking page after the next.
If you are a fan of Miller's work on Daredevil, and are not familiar with this book, you owe it to yourself to pick it up. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding Images and a great story.......2001-03-31

This graphic novel by Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz is one heck of a story. The graphic art complements this story as you are moved by the images. The story is compelling as it pschological moves you to uderstand each character. The art work is splended as you are fed with the right amount of colors, with th eright kind of colors depending on the situation.

This is a pschological drama and therefore, action is noticably missing. Don't misuderstand me, there are a couple of scenes, but the hero is not well represented in this area. This I think is to a fault. After all, one does expect certian things from certian charaters. With Daredevil, you expect a human drama with some action.

All in all, however, that may be more a matter of taste then principle and it should not stop any collector from getting this book. The story represents the mind as well as the soul of humans: good vs evil. An old story, but done with originality.

5 out of 5 stars The Peak of Storytelling.......2000-12-16

Comics/Graphic novels are for me a unique form of storytelling. Combining image with text in a controlled format. As a filmmaker I strive to blend dialogue and image to tell a story. In the study of improvisation there is a saying "Show; don't tell." and of course we all know the "a picture is worth a thousand words". In comics the artists have an opportunity to do this with every frame - a still frame that lets us use our imagination to provide motion and rhythm and sound. Although I have many favorite books - Dark Night Returns, Kingdom Come, The Killing Joke, Marvels - by far Love and War is the peak of storytelling for me. Frank Miller is an excellent storyteller, not only because of his original concepts and details but also because he is a master revisionist. The ability to take a character we already know and love and to get us to learn more about them and love them even more is remarkable. In Love and War Mr. Miller tackles the Kingpin, giving us insight into his personal makeup, letting us see why he is so cold and calculating and in a small way, accepting him as a person. It is devestating to understand and accept the "bad guy" and makes us realize the difficulty in being a true hero all the more. It is in Love and War that Mr. Miller manages to transcend Good vs. Evil and show us how things just are. Bill Sienkiewicz is the perfect artist for this story. His images are just as graceful, violent, distorted and colorful as the world can be. I can spend quite some time on each frame of this book noting details, following the motion of his brush stroke and deciphering the thousand words implied in each picture. He shows what Miller doesn't tell. All in all they combine to excute a fantastic story brilliantly told.

5 out of 5 stars Miller And Sienkiewicz At Their Best!.......2003-12-29

This large hardcover collects the Daredevil Graphic Novel (Love and War) as well as the entire Elektra Assassin series. Both stories were written by Frank Miller and illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz.

I missed reading these stories when they first came out in the 1980s but I'd heard so much about the great Miller-Sienkiewicz collaborations that I just had to get this book. The bonus is that you get the glorious Sienkiewicz art in a much larger size here than in the original - so you can spend hours poring over all the details. After all, this is the work that made Bill Sienkiewicz into, well... BILL SIENKIEWICZ!

The "Love and War" story is essentially about Kingpin and his wife, Vanessa. For those who have followed the storylines in Frank Miller's Daredevil comics (collected in the 3 volume Visionaries tradepaperbacks), you'll know that Vanessa went through a hell of a mental ordeal - finally reducing her to a vegetable. This is the follow-up story for those wondering how the Kingpin-Vanessa story went. This story, more than any other, shows Kingpin as a human who CAN be hurt... and hurt deeply. Not by do-gooder superheroes but by love. Sienkiewicz illustrates this story in a lyrical yet surreal fashion. The scenes showing Daredevil cradling Vanessa while jumping across the rooftops are so poetic and lyrical that you'll cry reading them.

"Elektra Assassin" is the real MEAT of this hardcover collection, though. Daredevil doesn't appear in this. It's all about Elektra and this secret agent. Miller mixes in Japanese mysticism, political paranoia, Greek tragedy, shadow-play espionage, gender issues, sex, violence, claustrophobic mind-games, media manipulation and the Biblical apocalypse into this story. Sienkiewicz takes the whole witch-brew and hammers the whole thing into form. The result is a heady trip... an experience, an encounter with a dangerous woman who may be the only one who knows what the hell is going on - and how to FIX it. This is the greatest example of comics-experimentation in the 1980s (Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen are the other examples).

                      Book Description

audio drama on cassettes/CD's. 2.5 hrs.

Arthur and Will Denision continue their adventures on the strange and wonderful island of Dinotopia. When Will accidentally discovers an ancient temple ruin guarded by not very friendly tyrannosaurs...he barely escapes their snapping jaws.

Meanwhile, Arthur leads an expedition deep into the mysterious caverns of the World Beneath. They discover a fleet of "strutters," strange mechanical walking machines shaped like dinosaurs and powered by sunstones. But the harmony of the entire island is threatened when a member of his expedition attempts to steal the Treasure of Posiedos, angering not only the tyrannosaurs, but also the even larger and fiercer meat-eating Giganotosaurus!

                      5 out of 5 stars Still Good.......2007-08-09

I pulled this off the shelf in a bookstore at the age of eight and forced my mother to buy it. Now, ten years later I still find pleasure in looking at the wonderful artwork and reading the great adventure story. A perfect rainy day read.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome today, even after nearly 10 years.......2005-07-10

I first saw this book in my english classroom's bookshelf back in junior high. I was about 13 at the time, and after flipping through the pages, reading a few paragraphs; seeing its astonishing level of detail and wonderfully drawn art, I had to have this book. So I took it home and never brought it back. I wasn't the only one either. At the end of the school year, only 3 of the 7 copies our teacher had remained. Dinotopia: The World Beneath, is that good.

Even now at 22 years of age, the book sits on my shelf as I type this. It's art and story are still captavating to me even today. And its the art that really shines. Well drawn, imaginative pictures that are sure to please children and adults alike. ***High quality and artistical marks here.*** This book is sure to make you say "Wow!" And I'm not really into this kind of stuff. James Gurney knows how to draw, and write a book.

The story is set around the late 1800's on a island where man and dinosaur live with one another in pure harmony and peace (with the exception of the angry Tyrannosaurs) and, in all aspecs, equal. Arthur Denison, sets out to find a lost ancient city of Poseidos. Encountering many dangers along the way. His son Will, who was stranded with him years before on Sauropolis Island is on his own task of helping retreive a plant to make medicine that will save the life of a baby triceratops.

I can't count the times I've read through this book over the years. And for parents who want to know what kind of book they're getting for their children, it is an educational book; teaching in respect, kindness and alike. This ***IS NOT*** no Jurassic Park book. Completely opposite. No blood, no gore. Probably one of the finest fantasy books ever written, it's creative, original and opens the imaginative mind.

Kids will love this book for many years- This isn't a book that will wind up in a box of stuff on its way to a donation center. Indeed a book worthy of handing down to generations to come. You would be hard pressed to find a book that can match Dinotopia in artistic value. A wonderfully made, great book for all.

5 out of 5 stars Oops I think he did it again........2003-04-22

I was pleasantly surprised to find that Gurney's second Dinotopia book is just as good as the first. The illustrations are wonderful. After reading this, I now know more about the characters in the movie Dinotopia.

                      5 out of 5 stars Superb Sequel.......2002-11-27

The first book was one of a kind...until the second came along and finished the story. Dinotopia: The World Beneath is a must have for anyone who has read the first book. There are new adventures, amazing new discoveries, plenty of exciting action and a satisfying conclusion to everything. The illustrations are just as spectacular as they were the first time and the story does not dilute itself one bit. I urge you to find yourself a copy of this book, and also a copy of the original if you have not read that either; both are amazing books meant for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars No loss of glory.......2002-11-10

Dinotopia is an island where dinosaurs and people live in peace, except for the carnivores that live in the Rainy Basin. This book is the sequel to Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time and it was just as good as the last Dinotopia. The sequel brought more depth to the plot without losing any of the original’s glory.

Oh it had it's moments, but some references were over the top for me. I didn't save it for a white elephant. I put it in the trash. Highly over rated but to each his/her own.

1 out of 5 stars This book is disappointing!.......2007-05-02

The trailer trash thing is overdone. I was turned off by the on and on ramblings and making fun of trailer park residents. I can listen to jokes of any kind but I found this very distasteful. This is 2007 not 1950. I collect cookbooks and thought this might have some fresh ideas and purchased it based on the good reviews. Everyone can choose their own style of humor, I just happen to see this book as turning into a white elephant or into the recycle bin. I felt the recipes were unremarkable and shallow, just as the author's commentary. There are so many great cookbooks at Amazon,I would look a little farther next time.

DIDN'T WANT THEM TO KNOW I HAD READ AND REREAD THEM. SO JUST ALWAYS GET ONE FOR YOURSELF SO YOUR GIFTS LOOK NEW. MAYBE THAT SHOULD BE A CHAPTER IN YOUR NEXT BOOK ON GOOD LIVING. OR MAYBE I JUST NEED TO LEARN TO READ WITH OUT EVIDENCE.

THANKS FOR ALL THE EXPERIENCES THAT YOU SHARE. I AM SURELY A BETTER PERSON BY READING THESE BOOKS.

I saw Ms. Boxcar at the Melbourne Writer's Festival in Australia, and she's bloody marvelous. Once you stop laughing, you will find that this collection of recipes is wonderfully tasty. The sauces alone breathe life into the old barbie regulars. What she does to beef is sinful! So if you are looking for a great food and great fun, this is the one.

This BBQ cookbook is filled with creative BBQ recipes and spectacular sauces that make you want to run to the kitchen and start cooking once you stop laughing. Ruby Ann is, no doubt, an authority on down home cooking and this book shows how her food and her humor have evolved from the first witty cookbook she wrote. I have tried several recipes, and they were all great, specially the sauces, and the meats.
If you want to impress your guests or family next time you BBQ, this book has many many recipes that will make you show off your cooking skills. And it is a kick to read. You will be sure to wipe away a tear from both the heat from the spice in the hot sauces and the humor in the entire book.

I ran across this while I was looking for a good barbeque book. The cover caught my eye, but the recipes grab hold of my taste buds and wouldn't let go. I ended up buying this book and when I got it home, my wife told me that she had one of Ruby Ann Boxcar's first cookbooks. She asked me if I'd read it at all and I told her that I'd looked at a lot of the recipes. Well, while I prepared the dinner and cooked up the Sassy Sauce recipe, my wife started reading the book aloud. We laughed and laughed all night long. Even during dinner, my wife and I would switch off reading the stories in-between bites. And the sauce was great. Since then we've cooked up all the sauces and a lot of the meat selections, and we haven't been disappointed yet. We even like the Dr Pepper chicken. We've also bought the rest of her books and have become the life of the party when we attend gatherings because we bring one of her recipes with us. People can't wait to see what dish we will uncover. I would highly suggest that if you are looking for unique, tasty, simple to make BBQ, as Ruby Ann calls it, then get this book. And it also makes a great gift for your boss, brother, dad, or any other man in your life. Even though it is funny as can be, it is also full of mouthwatering recipes that you can cook out on the grill or even inside on your Foreman grill.

I loved her first two books even though I'm not one for cooking so to speak, but I laughed the entire time I read them. And then when I saw this one online, I thought there was no way she could top herself. Well, I was wrong, and she has done it again. I took this with us on our family vacation across country, and while I drove, my wife read the book to us. There were a few times we actually had to pull the car over! Plus we used several of the tips and a lot of the recipes that Ruby Ann has in this book, and they were fantastic! I love the sauces. Since Ruby Ann and her neighbors will eat any type of BBQ, this book has a great mix of the tomato based sauces as well as the Eastern non-tomato based ones. And the recipes are so easy to make that I was even cooking a little this summer. What she does with meat should be illegal it is so good. Plus she also fills you in on what has been going on with the people of the High Chaparral Trailer Park since her last cookbook (the holiday one), which makes her series a sort of an All My Children meets Green Acres meets COPS meets the Food Network. I have to give this book two BBQ sauce stained thumbs up! Thanks you Ruby ann Boxcar.
