That Steve Hamilton has won a following by writing private-eye novels about a guy who has no interest in being a PI is testament both to his storytelling talents and readers' hunger for fresh approaches to this genre. North of Nowhere finds ex-Detroit cop Alex McKnight celebrating his 49th birthday by retreating to his cabin in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where he laments his personal and career failures. Eventually, though, McKnight is coaxed out with the prospect of a poker game, hosted by wealthy contractor Winston Vargas, only to have the game interrupted by armed men in masks, who empty Vargas's safe and leave clues suggesting that Alex and his fellow players engineered the heist.
Now, McKnight really has reason to feel sorry for himself. But instead, he goes after the gunmen, along the way swapping sucker punches with Vargas, shaking down his former detective partner (who videotaped the thieves' escape), and discovering that even his friends harbor secrets that could get them all killed.
This fourth McKnight outing (after 2001's The Hunting Wind) is a fine showcase for Hamilton's lithesome prose. The pace is brisk, the episodes often humorous, and the tale brims with an infectious reverence for its natural setting ("God help me, on a summer night when the sun is going down, it is the most beautiful place on earth"). If Hammett moved the detective story from the drawing room into the mean streets, Hamilton has proved that the north woods have their own potential for homicidal intrigue. --J. Kingston Pierce
Book Description
Steve Hamilton's debut novel A Cold Day In Paradise was the first novel to capture mystery's three most prestigious awards-the Edgar, the Shamus, and the Anthony awards for best first novel. Now North of Nowhere returns to the beautiful and dangerous landscapes of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where former Detroit cop Alex McKnight's attempts to leave civilization behind only lead to disaster....Lying facedown on the floor with a gun to the back of his head is where Alex McKnight finds himself after a game of cards turns into a professional heist at the home of local developer Win Vargas. When the dust settles, McKnight is one of police chief Roy Maven's lead suspects. Worse, Vargas' own sense of vigilante justice has targeted the former private eye as well, and the brash millionaire may be responsible for the sudden disappearance of Alex's best friend, Jackie. Now, with officials pointed in the wrong direction and his closest allies either missing or in jail, Alex knows he is the only one who can uncover the truth. But McKnight can't possibly know how dark this conspiracy truly is-or how close to guilt he actually stands....

Summer in Paradise.......2006-12-10
Never play poker with guys not known. Alex came to find this out as he ends up on the floor with a pistol at his head. This begins a novel of who Alex thought was one kind and who they turned out to be. This is quite a surprise and follows to a great ending. I highly recommend this book and have one more to read to complete all he has written to date. Don't miss any of them.
Poker game gone wrong!.......2005-01-15
Alex McKnight gets invited to a poker game at a private residence and then armed men break in and rob a safe full of money. The owner of the house thinks Alex did it. Chief of Police Maven thinks Alex's bar-owning friends did it. And Alex, thinking that he's clearing his best friend's name, stubbornly goes through all the suspects until he eventually trips on the real architect of the robbery. I like Alex's tenacity, but this adventure, especially the end, gets too unbelievable and convenient. Still it's a good yarn and enjoyable to read. There's something unsatisfying about Hamilton's endings. Things just don't fall into place nicely. However, it's the character of Alex McKnight that is the real draw for me.
Would You Do For A Friend?.......2004-10-25
FROM THE CASE: "On his 49th birthday, Alex McKnight's old friend Jackie goads him into playing poker with a bunch of men he hardly knows. In the middle of the game, masked robbers invade the premises, hold the players at gunpoint, and proceed to rob the homeowner. Alex is roused to action and so is his former detective partner, Leon Prudell. Working first against one another and later together, they discover that the crime is far more complex than a simple robbery. There is murder and greed and revenge involved-and a wild chase on the waters of Lake Superior-before Alex is forced to realize that there is no retreat from life. And that maybe this is a good thing..."
When ex-cop, ex-private eye Alex McKnight is almost physically drug out of his cabin by his old friend Jackie for night of poker with five other men, what could go wrong other then maybe drinking to much and waking up with a hang over the next morning. How about a home invasion and robbery, and if that isn't bad enough, three of the six men playing get arrested for planning the crime. Especially, when the three are good friends who you know would never do something like this. This springs Alex into action.
Though this isn't one of the best books I have ever listened to, it wasn't that bad either. I found the characters to be entertaining and likeable. Mr. Sullivan who narrates this book does an excellent job at bringing them to life based on the descriptions provided by Mr. Hamilton. In particular, Mr. Sullivan does a good job with making all of the voices different. He does a great job with the Canadian characters, ay. Mr. Sullivan has recorded over eighty audio books and has several television appearances to his name.
Though I found this book to be fun with a great plot and enjoyable characters it did have its flaws. In my humble opinion I felt that Mr. Hamilton could have made this book a bit more exciting. Mr. Hamilton spent a bit too much time with descriptions of the characters as well as the Northern Peninsula of Michigan. This book also didn't keep me riveted to it like many other audio books have. I'm not saying that Mr. Hamilton is a bad author; I just felt he used a bit to much description for my taste.
This fourth book in the Alex McKnight series is a good book that puts Alex into action to prove that his friends wouldn't or should I say couldn't ever be involved with a home invasion and robbery. It also makes Alex realize how little he knows about his friends and there families.
This is a pretty good book that in my opinion is worth the read or listen. Though it could have been better, if you like this genre, then I would recommend this book to you.
Mr. Hamilton's literary recognition includes the following award nominations and wins.
NOMINATED:
1999 Anthony First Novel A Cold Day in Paradise
2003 Anthony Novel North of Nowhere
2003 Shamus Novel North of Nowhere
2004 Anthony Novel Blood Is the Sky
2004 Shamus Novel Blood Is the Sky
WON:
1999 Edgar Alan Poe First Novel A Cold Day In Paradise
1999 Shamus First Novel A Cold Day In Paradise
I have never read or listened to any other titles written by Mr. Hamilton but I do plan on it. This book was enjoyable though not riveting I liked the plot and the characters and hope that all of his novels are this good. Based on his literary award nominations and wins, I don't think I will be disappointed.
Being a person who enjoys reading I have read many books and enjoyed the works of many authors, I can't really think of anyone to compare Mr. Hamilton with. Perhaps you could say his style is somewhat like that of Lawrence Block or James Lee Burke.
No matter what authors you prefer in this genre, give Steve Hamilton and North of Nowhere a try. I don't think you will be disappointed.
Enough already.......2004-06-12
Get the man some Paxil and a good job. It gets to be too much. There is a great deal of difference between skillfully crafted noir-ish pain and sheer wallowing self pity which some seem to think means "They are senstive".
Same complaints. Stereotypical characters, dull unwilling PI who really needs to find a good meat packing plant to work at. Keeps on just missing with a plot that could have been great as a vehicle for a good noir or Hardboiled PI. Poor Alex. Undercooked.
a very fast and fully enjoyable read.......2004-03-10
Alex McKnight has returned to Paradise-Michigan, that is. In his fourth outing, summer has finally set in. It is July and the increasingly reclusive Alex is asked to attend a poker game with his good friend, Jackie, owner of the local bar that Alex frequents. Unfortunately, the poker game at the house of a wealthy local businessman, Winston Vargas, is interrupted by an armed robbery in which everyone is forced to the floor at gunpoint. Vargas, alone, is robbed as he is forced to open his safe. The aftermath is quite perplexing as half the men attending the game are arrested for the robbery. Alex is convinced they are innocent and does what he can to clear their names. However, things get increasingly violent as Alex gets closer to the truth.
Steve Hamilton, Edgar winner for best first novel A COLD DAY IN PARADISE has written one of his best novels yet. I am always impressed with his ability to give the locale a certain immediacy to the reader. The first two books in the series took place primarily in the winter cold. Now we get a feeling of this Upper Michigan location in the midst of the summer season. Life is very different as boating and fishing become the primary pastime of the residents and visitors. We are treated to in depth descriptions of this area frequented by tourists. Alex is a loner, yet, he proves in this book that he is a loyal friend who will stop at nothing to defend those he is closest to. His character gives this series the true sense of realism and makes every return visit a pleasure. Pacing is never a problem with Steve Hamilton and this novel is no exception as the book proves to be a very fast and fully enjoyable read. With his talent, Steve Hamilton deserves a much wider audience.

Super Reader.......2007-08-04
Milo Morai is a superhuman mutant. Basically, he has the whole Wolverine deal going on, and also does not seem to age.
At the start he is travelling back to a civilisation of sorts that he has set up, the Horseclans. They have some Beastmaster type talents, the ability to telepathically communicate with their own special horses, and with big cats.
The book is set around 600 years after a nuclear disaster, as that is how old Milo is. He wants to find others like him, and has basically set himself the long and difficult task that L. E. Modesitt's Forever Hero has, to rebuild a civilisation that has lost its technology and is greatly reduced in number.
By the end of the book, he has found three other mutants like himself, and led his Clans to the sea, along with a bit of warfare along the way. This is only before finding out of others that have survived the centuries, by body snatching, basically, a group of scientist mind vampires also survives.
The book seems to jump around rapidly, and suffers from not enough focus I think. The author is obviously fond of the primitive arms and armor thing.
Still Around.......2007-01-22
I read the Horse Clan series way back in 1982 or 83, when I was in High School. Personally I am surprised to find that it is still around. Even back then it was not a particularly popular book series, however I liked Howard's Conan series, and quickly fell for Adams Horse Clans. This book series is not for everyone, but if you like Howards Conan books, you might want to give Horse Clans a look. Often marketed as a sword and sorcery book, it fails to meet that mark by a mile, but it is a good (not great) sci-fi fantasy novel(s)... well good in my opinion and maybe not so good in the opinion of others.
Shows knowledge of the author.......2006-12-17
Reviewed by Kelley Anderson for Reader Views (11/06)
I was really looking forward to reading "The Coming of the Horseclans." The back cover promises prophecy, sorcery and immortality. I, however, got completely lost in the jumble of strange names, clan legends, horses that talk to cats, cats that talk to men, horses that don't talk to cats, men with weapons, etc. etc. From what I actually understood, this strange man (Milo Morai) joins up with a clan of people, travels from what used to be Mexico into what used to be Texas, battles many people along the way and meets a woman that he would like to have sex with. The words were complex, the description of weaponry and fighting styles tedious and the relationships between the characters unclear. I honestly found myself hoping this guy would die so it would be over it. No such luck. He lives until the end. So the promise of immortality was fulfilled. As for prophecy and sorcery, I'm not sure where any of that factored into the book.
This being said, the extraordinarily detailed description of battle showed great knowledge on the part of the reader. He described in minute detail the arrows, swords and armor of the various people fighting each other. It didn't interest me at all and I kept losing my focus on where the characters were and what they were doing.
I'm afraid I can't recommend "The Coming of the Horseclans" to anyone, because I don't understand the plot, couldn't identify with the characters and was horribly bored by the detailed war descriptions.
An Interesting Read.......2006-08-06
A great novel for the Conan the barbarian style of fantacy writing. A post futuristic apocalypse world setting as a twist. Loved it and hope the publisher continues making new copy's of the original series.
Reprint of the series.......2006-01-10
Recently Mundania Press (www.mundaniapress.com) has reprinted the first book in the series and are presumably planning to reprint the whole series. I haven't had much trouble finding the other out-of-print books on various used book sites, currently collecting my second complete set for lending out to friends.

Bloody, Brutal Fantasy Debut.......2007-08-20
Here's a book it seems no one has heard about, and that's too bad. I read my first HORSECLANS book in high school, and it left an impression. For those who enjoyed 300 (or the better, lesser-known BLOOD OF HEROES), it seems that this book might have come out in the wrong decade.
THE COMING OF THE HORSECLANS introduced a fantasy series that reveled in brutality; that painted a picture of a world we'd all be glad not to live in. It shares a kinship with John Norman's GOR series; but HORSECLANS is written better, and it's not hung up on that whole slave-girl-exploitation dreck. In other words, underneath the blood and the guts and the sex, there's a bona-fide story. Woo-hoo!

Who knew?.......2004-04-22
I love Asimov's sci-fi and even some of his non-fic stuff, but let's be honest: he will never be the first guy you think of when the topic of humor comes up. But this book is nonetheless enjoyable and educational, in a way.
THE book on how to tell jokes.......2002-06-26
This not only shows you the great jokes of all time,
but also HOW to tell the jokes, with examples and samples.
Isaac Asimov does it again.
For everyone who loves telling jokes, this is THE book to get.
Funny Stuff.......2002-06-11
I have an older edition of this book...it is priceless. I enjoy it whenever I need a break - keep it at work. We all need humor, and Asimov had the kind of quirky sense of humor that enriches our lives....get this book.
Jokes with a purpose and a lack of meanness.......2001-12-22
In an age where humor is often laced with profanity or based on the ridicule of others, it is very pleasant to find a collection that is largely clean and often cerebral. This book contains a recollection of Isaac Asimov's favorite jokes along with instructions on how to deliver them. While Asimov is well-known as a prolific author, he was also a very funny man, possessing a sense of comedic timing that helped him earn hefty fees as a speaker.
While the jokes are good, it is clear that many of them would have to be delivered in the right manner to be funny. As you read Asimov's commentary, it is not difficult to imagine someone telling the story to maximum effect. Therefore, the book could also be used as a source for material as well as a primer on how to deliver an ice-breaking joke at the start of a public speech.
Isaac Asimov was a very talented man, capable of writing well about anything. His sense of humor was highly developed, something that is obvious from this book. I enjoyed it immensely and have occasionally used some of the jokes in my classes
Entertaining!.......2001-10-31
While not for everyone, for those who truly enjoy Asimov, this book is a must. Some of the jokes are laugh out loud funny, some will make you smile and some will make you read the explanation over and over again trying to figure them out. Of course, the explanations ARE the best part of the book. They provide more insights into the man and his times and are a joy to read. I also recommend I. Asimov - A Memoir and Yours, Isaac Asimov.

Great Summer Cookbook.......2007-07-24
Wonderful recipes. The lemon cake is the best. Probably not the best cookbook for those allergic to shellfish.
Take this to the farmers' market!.......2005-09-30
We bought a copy of this for our beach house hosts and liked it so much I had to get one for home, too. As another (more negative) reviewer noted, none of the recipes is earth-shatteringly new, but rather natural combinations of ingredients that you might not come up with on your own and want to try. In this way, the book reminds me of Cucina Fresca or Cucina Rustica, which are similar in sort of simply preparing good, fresh food. The author has a nice, casual writing style. Beautiful pictures, nicely laid out. I use this book a lot along with Italian Vegetarian (Jack Bishop) when I have some produce or a seasonal veg and am wondering how best to use it. Highly recommended.
Recipes which are quickly and easily prepared.......2005-09-07
There are numerous theme cookbooks on the market, so what makes Barbara Scott-Goodman's The Beach House Cookbook a winner? For one thing, it uses the theme of seaside freshness to create feasts based on seafood and fresh vegetables. So readers should have an affection for fresh seafood in order to appreciate The Beach House Cookbook. From an Oyster and Vegetable Bisque to Grilled Swordfish with Mango Salsa, emphasis is on recipes which are quickly and easily prepared, lending to beach picnics and vacation cooking.
Already well splattered. I keep it next to the salt........2005-07-01
This is a great cookbook! Made the lobster and roasted veg salad last night and got raves.
The best thing about it is just looking through the table of contents or leafing to a random page on your way out to shop - it sparks a better idea than you might have had for what to cook that night. Also, every recipe has a least one special "spark" idea or component that lifts the dish to a place that makes the meal special and memorable.
Seafood - who could ask for more?.......2005-07-01
The table of contents started me drooling (look in the See-Inside-the-Book above). The book makes good use of readily available seafood plus fresh fruits (for fruit cobbler or a sundae). Sure, the recipes may be found in a variety of cookbooks, but this pulls together the ones you want while at the ocean.
A few recipes use ingredients that I wouldn't have on hand (capers, chickpea flour), but most are straight forward. The color photographs really whet your appetite.
This was favorably reviewed by the Baltimore Sun saying it "captures the evocative moods of summer."

Almost Exactly What I Was Looking For.......2007-10-11
I was looking for a cookbook that follows the guidelines of South Beach Diet and had quick, easy recipes for a busy lifestyle. This book is full of them! It doesn't have a lot of recipes for Phase I, which was a little disappointing. I think it's most important to hook people with good food during Phase I, otherwise they never make it to Phase II. Everything I've cooked so far tastes very good. The variety of recipes and ingredients is impressive. It goes very far to show that just because you're dieting doesn't mean you can't have tasty food.
The South Beach Diet Quick & Easy Cookbook.......2007-09-24
If you are on a low or no carb diet or just want to eat healthier, this is a valuable tool.
Perfect Cookbook for South Beach Quick Meals!.......2007-09-24
This book is exactly as described. It has recipes that we have already used more than once! It is the only cookbook I have been using since we received it in the mail!
It is Good, But is it Complete?.......2007-09-20
There is a lot to The South Beach Diet that makes it so popular, and this cookbook makes a perfect addtion to the diet book. However, I think that we in North America, while chasing the perfect body, forgot about what really matters - the perfect health.
I am a creature that trusts everybody, but not without a dose of skepticism. Therefore I always make a point of trying new approaches on my own before expressing any opinion. After going trough The South Beach Diet I realized that Agatston is just updated version of old Atkins. Although these two low carb approaches certainly bring good results from the point of loosing weight, I am not really convinced that this is what one needs to focus on. First of all, it is a hard diet to follow, and sooner or later one is bound to break some of the rules. Secondly, I find that in a healthy diet we need carbs the same way as we need fats and proteins.
Out of all approaches to losing weight, the one that makes most sense to me is presented by Dr. Tombak in his book "Can We Live 150 Year" Using simple language he talks abut all aspect of health and longevity. Following some simple food combination guidelines, and not letting your stomach direct your actions are the basic things that one needs to do. As the author advises: "Eat to live instead of living to eat!" I think that this is the most important thing when considering nutrition. South Beach Diet is good and working, but Agatston missed this one point...
good addition to the diet book.......2007-09-14
This cookbook is a good supplement to the book. It provides a number of tasty alternatives that were fairly easy to prepare.

THE SOUTH BEACH DIET COOKBOOK fills that need by offering more than 200 recipes that adhere to the diet's nutritional principles without compromising on taste.
Beginning with a brief overview of the science-based eating philosophy and why it produces such dramatic results--up to 13 pounds in the first 2 weeks--the book also includes success stories, troubleshooting tips, and frequently asked questions. the fabulous recipes, from Whole Grain Pancakes with Berry Cream Syrup to Filet Mignon with Tomatoes and Rosemary to Chocolate-Hazelnut Flourless Cake, ensure that THE SOUTH BEACH DIET COOKBOOK will appeal to anyone who wants to eat more healthily (and who doesn't?). And for every dish there is an indicator as to which phase of the diet it corresponds to, so followers can choose appropriate foods.

Healthy Diet.......2007-05-02
As an overweight general internist I started the South Beach diet because it is really a lifestyle change as opposed to that four letter word, "diet." The recipes are easy, fun, and actually very tasty. I recommend the South Beach plan and this cookbook to all my overweight patients.
Good recipes even if you aren't on the diet.......2007-04-18
A couple of years ago my girlfriend had a little girl and wanted to lose the extra baby fat she put on so she went out and bought this book. I have never been a fan of these diets but the book did intrigue me. I read through a lot of it and started to get interested in the recipes. The recipes my girlfriend made me where very good and flavorful. She ended up following the South Beach Diet and lost a good amount of weight. The first week is said to be a little hard but once you get past that week there are great and delicious recipes to make.
Fits South Beach perfectly.......2007-03-25
Easy to follow recipes that fit perfectly with the South Beach plan and take out the guess work from cooking while using everyday ingredients.
South Beach Wonder Book!!!.......2007-03-20
Recently I purchased the South Beach Cookbook. Since I am on the South Beach Diet, this cookbook has made it so easy for me to follow the plans.
It not only took the guess work out of prepairing meals, but also gave wonderful flavers to the foods. I highly reccommend this book for cooks who want a new HEALTHY WAY of cooking. E. Straus

If you are one who loves to try out new and exotic recipes...this is for you. If you are looking for easy, quick recipes....not so much. It is nice, however, that the Phases are color coded so you know if the recipe is the right one for your phase. Included is a condensed over-view of the diet.
