Book Description

Patricia Anne would swear that either she or her sister Mary Alice were switched at birth, except they were both born at home. Flashy, flirtatious Mary Alice is one foot taller, twice the body weight of Patricia Anne, and three times as likely to do something completely off the wall. But now Mary Alice's impulsive behavior has land them both in the Birmingham jail!

It all begins with a call from their good friend Mitzi Phizer, who's starting an investment club -- kind of a Beardstown Ladies group. Patricia Anne is willing to make a small, conservative investment in a thriving chain of HMOs; Mary Alice is hot to trot to put her money on Viagra. But before the club idea gets off the ground, the sisters spot Mitzi's supposedly faithful husband in a chummy little huddle with a redhead -- and the next thing they know, Arthur is accused of murdering the mystery woman. Nothing about the whole sordid story fits the kind, gently Arthur, and Patricia Anne is doing her best to console her good friends. But when their house catches on fire, and Arthur is shot in a place that won't allow him to even sit down at his own murder trial, the sisters know they have to stand up for the poor fellow. And that means checking out everyone -- from low-down cads to highbrow bank presidents -- to find a no good gun-toting arsonist who believes big money is to kill for.

4 out of 5 stars A bit confusing, but still fun........2007-04-02

I too found the end of this book a little confusing, but I enjoyed the book just the same. The antics that these two sixty-something sisters get up to are a lot of fun. I always feel that I want to get to know these two old girls. In this book, things seem to be happening to Patricia Anne's neighbour. First he's accused of murder, then his house burns, and finally he gets shot (in the backside of all places). Patricia Anne knows that there are some dirty dealings underneath all this, and she and her sister Mary Alice begin to do a little "follow the money". These books are very funny, and the characterizations are very real.

4 out of 5 stars Death at the Hunan Hut.......2007-01-20

Patricia Anne Hollowell (Mouse) and Mary Alice Crane (Sister) are sisters in their sixties who couldn't be more different if they tried. From their pets to their personality to their finances these two sisters are the very epitome of a divergent gene pool. Still they love each other dearly and their sisterly relationship is the corner stone on which this series is built. Anne George had a wonderful talent for creating dialogue between her characters that was both believable and entertaining and the dialogue between Sister and Mouse is absolutely brilliant.

In previous entries in this series the sisters have become involved in murder investigations for all sorts of reasons, most often to prove that a friend of theirs is innocent of the crime. That is the case again with this book as Mouse's next-door neighbor Arthur Phizer is accused of killing his first wife. Well, she isn't technically his first wife but then again there was a legitimate ceremony. As you can see, this author's storylines are also extremely imaginative and quite funny as you will see when you find out which of the characters gets shot in the behind and also as you discover why Sister bashed the bank president over the head with her umbrella. How in the world did a sweet looking little lady from Birmingham think this stuff up?

As with many cozy mysteries, the mystery tends to take a back seat in these books but in this installment the mystery is a little more noticeable than usual. Unfortunately though when the mystery is solved the solution gets so convoluted that it is all a little hard to grasp. I think that maybe the author was reaching a little when she finished up this book but after a little head scratching and rereading it will all finally make sense.

Despite a little weakness toward the end however this is another fine entry in this series. Mouse, Sister and crew are as entertaining as ever and I assure you that you won't be able to read this book without a loud chuckle or at least a broad smile. It's worth the price of the book and more just to hear Sister explain how she "accidentally" lost her innocence back in high school.

4 out of 5 stars Southern Sisters Mysteries are Entertainment in Murder.......2005-10-05

In "Murder Shoots the Bull", mystery writer Anne George delightfully foils readers with the charming personalities of her two lead characters, sisters Patricia Ann Hallowell and Mary Alice Crane. Under the cover of innuendo of infidelity, alluded to by Patricia Ann's next door neighbor's husband, the Southern Sisters actually become the readers' best friends. Patricia Ann and Mary Alice sit in perky innocence inside your mind, explaining everything that's going on - in the world (as they see it), in Birmingham, Alabama where they live and in the plot. It's like gossip with tea and crumpets, except it's Southern style, USA. Moreover, it's also "murder". In the plot, the murder of a previously unknown "first wife", who was a high school fling by neighbor Mitzi's husband, reveals how people care about one another in an urban neighborhood which was, once upon a time, the outskirts of the big city of Birmingham, Alabama. I enjoy author George's characters more than the actual plot, their sisterly rivalry over age, and beauty coupled with sibling "give and take" are entertaining beyond the "who-dun-it?" This is the second "Southern Sisters Mystery" I've read. I intend to be a lifelong fan of author George as a result of getting to know her through her likeable and believable characters.

5 out of 5 stars Anne George is a great mystery writer and will be missed.......2004-09-12

I had read several mysteries by her before this one, and sometimes that means you start to tire of characters in a series. "Southern Sisters" (from Birmingham, Alabama) Patricia Anne and Mary Alice" continue to amuse, and reading about them is like a visit with old friends. This book was as good or better than the others.

The plot involves Patricia Anne's long-time neighbor (Arthur Phizer) who appears to be having an affair -- and then the woman he was seen dining with dies, and he is the number one suspect in her murder. Things go down hill from there for the Phizers. Patricia Anne finds herself trying to help the Phizers, which involves her in the mystery, and naturally her larger than life sister Mary Alice gets involved -- not to mention an array of friends, neighbors, relatives, and acquaintances of the sisters, the neighbors, and the deceased.

I recommend the whole series -- I think those who like cozy novels will be particularly happy with this book, but the audience should be wider than that, and include lovers of funny mysteries or southern mysteries.

4 out of 5 stars Bulls-eye!.......2004-05-09

This 6th book in Anne George's delightful 'Southern Sisters' series is one of her best. Neighbor Mitzi's husband is accused of murder, and Ms. George manages to juggle an interesting plot, versatile characters and a wonderful sense of humor successfully throughout it. A fast read, because it's hard to put down. Hours of pure entertainment.

Jenny Read was an articulate and talented artist who died too young in 1976. This book comprised of letters, journal entries, dreams, drawings and photographs captures her life as an artist and woman. She was a talented artist in San Francisco in the Seventies and she was very much part of the art scene there. She also stood apart from aspects of the counterculture-she attended Church services and rejected the cynicism of many of her peers. She was passionate about her art and about growing as an artist. This book captures her unique art and gentle spirit. (She is portrayed in the Dancing Saints Mural at St. Gregory's Church in San Francisco.)

        5 out of 5 stars A LITERARY SELF-PORTRAIT OF A TROUBLED WOMAN..........2004-06-16

This is book that attempts to analyze the personality of a woman, Jenny Gove Masterson, from a series of letters written by her. These letters, often passionate, often vitriolic, delineate a very dysfunctional mother/son relationship. They are written in a manner reflective of the era in which she lived and are a birds-eye view into another time. The reader is able to see her life unfold, much like a Greek tragedy, through her intimate, well-written, highly descriptive letters. Her letters are a fascinating window into the mind of another person. They paint a compelling, literary self-portrait of a complex and troubled woman.

Jenny Gove Masterson was born in Ireland in 1868 but moved to Canada with her family when she was a very young girl. Always interested in scholarly pursuits, she was forced to leave school at eighteen, when her father died, in order to work to help support her brothers and sisters. Finally, when she was twenty-seven, her brothers and sisters on their own, she married Henry Masterson, a divorced American. To marry a divorced man was unheard of in her family and considered to be a disgrace. Her marriage caused Jenny to become estranged from her strict, Protestant family, and she moved to America. About two years into the marriage, her husband died, just a month before their son, Ross, was born.

She would then embark on a life of total self-sacrifice and devotion to her son. Nothing was too good for her Ross, and she ensured that his was an interesting and culturally rich childhood, with education held at a premium. She spared no expense, working at any jobs that would afford her son all the opportunities she sought for him. She lived a life of self-imposed martyrdom where her son was concerned. Possessive and very single-minded, she spun a cloying cocoon of maternal obsession around her son, who appeared to have been her only companion during his formative years.

When he reached manhood, however, Ross began drifting apart from his mother's apron strings. He would form relationships with the opposite sex, only to have his mother belittle the object of his affection. This caused him to keep his marriage a secret, when he first married. When his mother discovered it, she was enraged beyond measure. Even when Ross and his wife eventually divorced, this was to be the pattern whenever Ross embarked on a relationship with a member of the opposite sex. No woman was ever good enough for her son. This state of affairs would cause an estrangement between mother and son that was to torture Jenny Gove Masterson all her life.

Despite her estrangement from her son, Jenny Gove Masterson would form a relationship of sorts with her son's former college roommate and his wife, and, between the ages of fifty-eight and seventy, she would write them a series of letters, totaling three hundred and one at the time of her death. In addition to the letters, the book includes a very personal, thoughtful commentary on the life of Jenny Gove Masterson and her letters by one of the recipients of her missives.

The editor of the book, Gordon W. Allport, a Professor of Psychology at Harvard at the time that this book was first released, attempts an interpretation of Jenny Gove Masterson herself, based upon the content of her letters. He does so by applying the various accepted theories of psychology and schools of thought to her letters and what is known of her background in order to try to decipher and explain Jenny Gove Masterson's somewhat forceful, difficult, and enigmatic personality. This novel approach to analysis is an intriguing one and sure to pique the interest of those with an affinity for psychology, as it provides much food for thought with respect to its unusual case study.

This is a compelling book that will keep the reader turning its pages until the very last.

"Dear Mr. Anthony,"I need your help. I'm at wit's end and am grabbing at straws, so I decided to write to you in hopes that you might take a few minutes of your time for my daughter Jennifer."Jennifer is twelve years old, and has very much enjoyed your Xanth series. Unfortunately, at the moment, she is in no condition to be able to enjoy your latest offering. On December 9th, 1988, while walking home from school she was struck by a drunk driver, and she has been in a coma ever since......"Piers Anthony responded to this mother's plea with a long letter, only the first of many. Jenny responded. Slowly at first, she began fighting back toward consciousness, and then health. Through it all, her favorite author sent her encouragement and sympathy and laughter and love. These warm, compassionate and wise letters to Jenny offer an unusual glimpse into the heart and mind of one of America's bestselling writers, and a look at reasons behind his personal relationship with his legions of fans.

        3 out of 5 stars A mistake all around........2004-10-26

The story behind this book is touching. The often intimate letters provide a glimpse into the everyday life of Piers Anthony and reveal a sensitive, candid side of him that most fans never get to see.

Beyond that, it all falls down. It's important to remember that this is not a novel; It is a series of letters, written without any intent (on the part of the author) of publishing them. There is no plot, no action -- nothing to hold the reader's attention.

If you're still curious, check out a copy from your local library; Don't waste the money it would cost to order it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, and yet.......2001-08-29

I just recently purchased Letters To Jenny, and did so because I thought it was one of the most touching things I had ever seen on a bookstore shelf. That being the case, I am aghast to see that some people think Anthony is flirting with the child, he isn't, at least not in my opinion, rather he is using humour to pull her through a very difficult time in her life. Through the written word, he is being just as much a doctor as any one of her therapists. The fact that he published these letters exactly as he wrote them in the first place when he had no idea he was going to publish them, gives the reader a glimpse into what he may really be like. You cannot know a person just by their publicity, and this is a tiny glimpse behind the publicity. The only thing about this book that bothers me is how little of the proceeds are going to Jenny's family, but in the mind of Jenny, being in a Xanth book is probably more important than money, and at least they are getting something...which knowing the popularity of this author, could add up to a substanstail amount. Also, for those of you who think that this book is degrading to all concerned, remember that Jenny herself had to give permission to be published, and she was mentally capable of making that choice,we should all respect it.
All in all Letters To Jenny is one of the most touching and truly human stories I have ever read, I have a feeling that every time I pick it up I will learn something new. It proves that every so often someone can take time out of their busy schedule to do something truly kind for a fellow human being.

5 out of 5 stars A Poignant Slice of Life.......2000-09-23

Reading Piers Anthony's letters to Jenny, a twelve year old girl who had been struck by a drunk driver, gives the readers an intimate view of both the writer and the young girl's struggles to come back to the world. Humor, poignancy, and warmth infuse the letters and will touch readers.

        4 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2000-05-31

I do not believe that Piers Anthony was being exploitive in his publication of Letters To Jenny as one previous reviewer thought. This is a non-fiction work as all prospective purchasers should be aware of. This is a series of letters Mr. Anthony wrote to a very sick young fan over a span of several years. The letters are touching and entertaining and make for an easy read. I for one enjoy knowing a bit about the person who wrote the book I am reading so I am glad to have this opportunity. If the author's true motive was money I doubt this would ever have been published. Non-fiction works by fiction authors rarely sells as well as fiction.

5 out of 5 stars A sliver of marshmallow in the heart of an Ogre.......1999-11-12

I've always enjoyed Anthony's Author's Notes, finding it amusing and touching that he takes the time to share the ups and downs of his life with us as he writes. I was very moved by the Note in which he discussing his letters with a young suicidal woman. But in this, his Letters to Jenny, a real sense of Anthony comes across. This is a man often accused of being a sexist, whose life is surrounded and filled by a wife and daughters:) There is a real fatherly, or maybe "uncle-ly", compassion in his teasing and thoughtful letters to young Jenny. I have more regard for this author, who has given me so many hours of entertainment with his fiction, after reading this incredible piece of non fiction. My best wishes are with Jenny, and her guardian Ogre:)

A children's picture story book, set in the Australian bush. This illustration is excellent, and gives the book an overall whimsical and sweet feel that nicely complements the tale itself.

Definitely a good, simple introductory type book for kids, and let's face it, bunyips are cool.

4 out of 5 stars Bunyip Angst - a review of "The Bunyip of Berkeley's Creek".......2007-06-05

This is a nice story about a young Bunyip seeking it's identity. The story begins when a Bunyip comes up out of the mud with no notion of what it is nor what it looks like. It asks a platypus and some other creatures about what a Bunyip looks like, but the replies are never flattering. Still the Bunyip continues on his quest, asking his questions, until he finally runs across a scientist who is so wrapped up in his work that he asserts -without even looking up to see who he is talking to-- that there is no such thing as a Bunyip.

Well what is a Bunyip to do about that! The answer apparently is to head off to live alone. That is, until one faithful evening, when another Bunyip rises out of the mud asking the eternal Bunyip-question: what am I.

Four Stars. [B-] The artwork is wonderful. Good Read-aloud. The storyline is a little deep for very young children, but they should enjoy the cadence of the words and the pictures. Better suited, I think, for 8 to 11 year olds. Overall I give it an good slightly above average rating.

4 out of 5 stars Bunyips and Australian Fauna.......2007-04-30

A bunyip emerges from a creek one night and wants to know what he is. The bunyip asks several Australain animals questions about itself, only to be confused and dissapointed by their response. Finally he has enough information to answer the question for another.
A nice little Australian story, well illustrated, a little bit sad, but with a happy ending.

        5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2003-04-04

Jenny Wagner's _The Bunyip of Berkeley's Creek_ is an award-winning picture book from Australia.

In it, a Bunyip (an ugly but harmless creature) emerges from the mud of a creek. Various animals, including a platypus and emu, tell him that a bunyip is ugly. Eventually he meets a scientist who looks "right through" him, and tells him that bunyips don't exist. Eventually he packs his belongings and hikes away from his home. He comes upon a billabong, pitches camp, and lo and behold meets another bunyip. The new bunyip is in need of the same friendship and reassurance that our first bunyip could have used at the beginning of the story.

Themes explored here are the value of support and friendship, and the importance of self-esteem. Also noted is the harm done by insults and indifference. Far from being preachy, the author and illustrator skillfully weave the theme into the plot.

The illustrations are dark, and frequently are smaller than the page, framed in white. They are reminiscent of Maurice Sendak.

The bunyip is no monster. He's not the horrific ghoul portrayed in movies such as Dot and the Kangaroo. He's an ugly but harmless patchwork of a beast, with mismatched body parts. His attitude is one of bewilderment, hopefulness, and persistence. I can't recommend this picture book highly enough. USA residents should check their public libraries, because the book is currently out of print in the USA.

5 out of 5 stars Best Bunyip Book.......2001-04-07

Our two and a half year old daughter loves this book, preferring it to many Caldicott winners and other fine books. I understand the appeal. The drawings are brilliant, truly fantastic. The story is provocative to a two year old: the Bunyip has a mysterious origin, doesn't understand who he is or what he looks like, gradually discovers that he is a Bunyip, and eventually finds another Bunyip to spend time with. It's a tale of self-discovery and friendship, what could be better.

A wave of global terrorism spreads as a result of one madman's tyrannical powers. Even while the governments of three major world powers are on his trail, CURE, the United States' top secret agency, knows of only one way to solve the problem - The Destroyer. There's little doubt that Master Chiun's protégé Remo Williams is capable of waging any war, but when the mysterious radical assassin is out to kill, everyone runs for cover - except the fearless and most powerful.

                                      Book Description

When a tiny cheese shop opened for business on a quaint Berkeley street in 1967, there was little hint of what the shop—and the neighborhood—would grow into over the next 30 years. The Cheese Board became a collective a few years later, and Chez Panisse opened across the street, giving birth to one of the country's most vibrant food neighborhoods, the epicenter of California's culinary revolution. Known and loved by locals and travelers alike, the Cheese Board is equal parts bakery, cheese store, pizzeria, and gathering place—a patchwork of the local community, where a passion for good food runs deep. For the first time ever, THE CHEESE BOARD presents the classic recipes that have made the store one of the San Francisco Bay Area's most acclaimed gourmet destinations. Complete with a history of the shop and neighborhood, a cheese primer, and all the classic recipes—including the corn-cherry scones, cheese rolls, and zampanos, all of which have a cult following—THE CHEESE BOARD is as rich and varied as the institution that inspired it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Scones Ever.......2007-01-10

I love this book. I have been searching for the perfect scones for 25 years. I have found them in the Cheese Board's new book, along with myriad other phenomenal recipes (brioche, shortbread, pizza, etc.). The humor and affection of the bakers/writers for each other and the subject matter are also infectious.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Little Book.......2006-01-04

I spent 6 years in Berkeley and I still go back occasionally. The one stop I always make is the Cheeseboard. Not only are they famous for wide cheese and olive selection, but their bakery is out of this world. I remember the days where I would get Brioche and munch on it on the way to class. Or getting the fresh baked sourdough baguettes on the way home from the market. This cookbook describes in detail how to work with the dough, measure out ingredients, and how to bake bread properly. I learned a great deal about baking from this book. I have made a few things (such as the shortbread, sourdough baguette, brioche, muffins, etc) from the book and was very satisfied. Now, this is not for the beginner bakers, I don't think. Also, this is not a speed baking book. I would rate this book as a medium skill book, but with a help of Kitchen Aid mixer and patience, you will be able to get the same great products you find at the Cheeseboard Collective. Definitely recommended for anybody and everybody.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Baking Voyeurism.......2005-08-10

This book is worthwhile for the mouth watering stories and recipes alone! As someone who went to Berkeley shortly after the Cheese Board was established, the "old" quotes from former members concerning the joys and travails of working at the Cheese Board brought back memories of Berkeley in that era in a pleasantly nostalgic manner.

Although the bread recipes are far beyond my abilities, all of the morning breakfast food recipes can be produced successfully by someone with limited baking experience (and limited patience!).

Definitely work buying, even if you never bake any of the breads.

                                      4 out of 5 stars great read.......2004-12-01

I read it cover to cover, great fun, lots of fascinating history of the collective. The pizza recipe I tried was excellent. But if you are looking for a book with lots of detailed information on different cheeses and what to serve them with, note that you won't find that here -- the food focus is on baking.

5 out of 5 stars Fun book with some great recipes.......2004-07-06

If you ever been to the Cheese Board in Berkeley, you've experienced how fun, and delicious it is. It's a destination, not just a food store.

The book is the same way. The recipes are delicious, and actually work. But it's filled with fun facts and info on the Cheese Board history and culture.

So far, I've made the challah (Excellent!), banana muffins (very good), ginger shortbread (good), and simple whole wheat bread (bit of a disaster).

The only criticism I have is its overemphasis on sourdough. Many of the recipes assume creating sourdough with their recipe, so if that's not to your taste, it's not clear exactly how to proceed.
