Murder Runs in the Family: A Southern Sisters Mystery

Book Description
Mary Alice has spared nothing for her only daughter's wedding -- from seventy-five yards of bridal train to gourmet food for over three hundred guests and enough glittering elegance to make Mary Alice think about finding herself a fourth rich husband to pay for it all.Practical Patricia Anne has put away her aunt-of-the-bride blue chiffon and settled back into domesticity when fun-loving Mary Alice calls to say they have a post-wedding date with a genealogist from the groom's side of the family. Lunch is a fascinating lesson on the hazards of finding dirty linens in ancestral boudoirs that ends abruptly when their guest scurries off with the local judge, leaving the sisters with their mouths open -- and finishing their luncheon companion's cheesecake -- when the police arrive.
Their mysterious guest has taken a plunge from the ninth floor of the courthouse building -- an apparent suicide. But given the scandals a nosy genealogist might have uncovered, the sisters are betting that some proud Southern family is making sure their shameful secrets stay buried. . .along with anyone who tries to dig them up.

In this book, we find the brash, bold, extra-large Mary Alice in preparation for her daughter's first wedding. Deborah is marrying a former student of her Aunt Patricia Anne's who may also be the former father of her twins as he donated sperm to the clinic! It is funny in a good, clean sort of way. It depicts middle-America at its finest.
Mary Alice finds a little romance of her own in "Murder Runs in the Family" as does Patricia Anne's widowed daughter - Haley. Fred and Patricia Anne make you believe in "happily ever after" as they celebrate 40 years of marriage.
Patricia Anne is constantly amazed at the transformations of her former students. In this book, she amazes herself as she delves into a little geneology.
This is a DELIGHTFUL series. I promise you. You will NOT be disappointed.

one of Darkover's best.......2004-01-13
The novel is broken out into three sections, each focusing on a different character, though the same cast of characters moves in and out of the stories being told in each section. The first section focuses on the lady Rohana Ardais. Before the novel begins, Lady Rohana is given information that a kinswoman who had been kidnapped more than a decade ago is still alive and that she wants to be rescued for the sake of her children. Rohana defies convention, hires out a team of Free Amazons, and sets out to rescue Melora from the Dry Towns. This rescue results in Melora's daughter, Jaelle, being fostered by the Free Amazons. There is a twelve year interval between section one and section two.
Section two focuses on a Terran named Magda Lorne, and again, there is someone who needs rescuing. This time it is her former husband, also a Terran. Both are Terran agents working out of the spaceport at Thendara. Since they were raised in a Darkovan city, they are able to work undercover, learning the languages and the changes in language and style and culture to better assist the Terrans to interact with the natives of Darkover. Magda's ex-husband, Peter, seems to look identical to a relative of Rohana's, and with Rohana's suggestion, Magda disguises herself as a Free Amazon to negotiate the release of Peter.
Section three features a grown Jaelle. Jaelle met up with Magda during section two, and is a leader of a small band of Free Amazons. But she is still young, and has not yet known love and does have the experience to know if she will regret her decision to become a Free Amazon. This becomes the central conflict of the third section, after the action of section two.
Ultimately, this is a novel that looks at the gender roles in Darkovan society and how there is one segment of society that works outside the typical roles of women. The Free Amazons will also be a very important society in the relations between Darkover and the Terran Empire.
This is one of the better Darkover novels. With the three section structure, Bradley was able to pack the detail and story and emotion into a tighter form, and the novel is stronger because of that. Each of the three women (Rohana, Magda, and Jaelle) are characters that I want to know more about, they are well written and interesting, and this is an excellent chapter in the world of Darkover.
Get chained to reading it!.......2001-09-15
Fascinating world where contradictions abound.......2000-09-12
The novel starts with a daring rescue of a kidnapped, enchained, and very pregnant Comyn Lady from the barbaric Dry Towns chief who has kept her his prisoner/wife for over a decade. We meet the Free Amazons, the women who are hired as mercenaries to handle the rescue, as well as the Comyn Lady who hired them to rescue her imprisoned cousin and her young daughter.
The story returns to the Free Amazons and the Comyn Lady years later when a Terran woman needs their help to save one of her own. Their stories are linked in a series of adventures that establish Darkover as an irresistable world.

Advise about the chronological order of the Darkover Series.......2000-07-03
This series is not just for the Sci-Fi/fantasy reader. It is probably the most "real" look at humanity, our gender struggles, and our mental potential that I've read in any genre. A truly intelligent rendering of the human landscape!

Book Description
Even as a young calf, Longtusk understood the hardships the few remaining of his ancient kind had encountered when the glaciers retreated and grassy forests stole over the vast tundra the herds called home. Worst of all was when the Fireheads came -- cruel, two-legged beasts who kill for pleasure. At a tender age, Longtusk became their prisoner, hobbled, abused, and stripped of his freedom. But through toil and terror, Longtusk never forgot his Clan -- and he carried crucial, intimate knowledge of the Fireheads' ways, though at a terrible price. Now the time is rapidly approaching when he will have to clash with those who seek to destroy every living trace of his proud breed. The dark land before him will be mined with fierce obstacles and awesome challenges. And though it may require the ultimate sacrifice -- and a grim confrontation with the Lost, the most feared enemy of his gargantuan race -- Longtusk must not shun the twisted path in front of him...or what he is destined to become: the greatest hero of them all.

Fascinating.......2001-06-05
Like most males his age, Longtusk believes he will do great things. He ignores his clan's leadership, both the matriarchal and male elders. He begins his quest for greatness, but barely survives a deadly fire. Separated from his mates, Longtusk, joins a tribe of Neanderthals, but they fall prey to the dangerously clever human Fireheads. Now a prisoner, Longtusk becomes a slave working next to other domesticated animals. As Longtusk laments his fate, his "people" are in deep trouble from a changing ecosystem and the cunning Fireheads.
LONGTUSK, the second tale in the "Mammoth" trilogy, is an exciting prehistoric science fiction novel in which Stephen Baxter provides human traits to the mammoths. The story line never slows down as a different world comes to life even as the realization creeps into the minds of the mammoths and Neanderthals that the Fireheads are gaining control. Though some major subplots seem identical to the first novel (see SILVERHAIR), fans of the sub-genre will enjoy the novel and its Wooley hero.

Beautiful!.......2000-09-18
Incredible graphic design. A general rule of thumb--if Chronicle are the publishers of the book, it'll have a fantastic layout. These are the guys who brought to life Michael's devastatingly good vision in the "Tra Vigne" cookbook. Likewise, they also published Georgeanne Brennan's "Potager" and "Mediterranean Herb" cookbooks. The layouts are ALWAYS superb, and each and every release has beautiful photographs and dialogue. Which brings me to my next point.
Great dialogue. Offers a surprisingly thorough history of olive oil. Likewise, it offers a good summary on how to pick, store, and use different types of olive oils, as well as offering a mini glossary of olive oil colloquialisms (i.e., "extra-virgin" and "first-cold pressed", etc.). Also, Peggy's personality and humor come across very well and make the text quite an enjoyable read. This is something that just isn't normally found in many cookbooks who only see things through a step-by-step, color-by-numbers approach to cooking.
Of course, importantly,
Very good recipes. The recipes are extremely tasty. Most are amazingly simple, yet turn out spectacular. The approach is very simple, yet home-y...including ingredients typically found (or readily available) to the novice, home cook.
Get this book and I guarantee that you will not regret its inclusion in your collection!

Great scientific reference book for olive producers........1999-01-06
The chapters on deterioration of olive oil and packing and storing of oil give very good descriptions of the oxidation process and cover the pros and cons of different storage container types. This is the first time I found good information regarding oil storage in glass, plastic, and stainless steel. The chapter on refining olive oil also describes the methods used to treat defective olive oils.
The book also details the methods used to analyze oil chemically including the specific laboratory tests as well as a description of the International Olive Oil Council sensory analysis methodology. It also has a chapter on adulteration tests for genuineness in olive oil.
I really enjoyed the chapter that covers the effects of olive oil on the serum lipoprotein levels in relation to cholesterol types, heart disease, and the anti-oxidant properties important to cancer prevention. This subject is difficult to understand, but very important in the marketing of olive oil as a health food. Each chapter is well referenced to the original source of the experimental work, so the information is quite reliable. This is an impressive book that should be in every serious producer's reference Library.
