Book Description
The winner of Alaska's world-famous Iditarod -- a grueling, eleven-hundred-mile dog sled race across a frigid Arctic wilderness---takes home a $250,000 purse.
But this year, the prize is survival.
Only the toughest and the most able come to compete in this annual torturous test of endurance, skill, and courage. Now, suddenly and inexplicably, the top Iditarod contestants are dying one by one in bizarre and gruesome ways. Jessie Arnold, Alaska's premier female "musher," fears she may be the next intended victim, but nothing is going to prevent her from aggressively pursuing the glory and the rewards that victory brings.
Dedicated State Trooper Alex Jensen is determined to track down the murderer before more innocent blood stains the pristine Alaskan snow. But Jensen's hunt is leading him into the frozen heart of the perilous wild that Jessie Arnold knows so well -- a merciless place far from any vestige of civilization, where nature can kill as fast as a bullet...and only the Arctic night can hear your final screams.

Can't believe this won awards.......2007-09-29
Info about the race was interesting, but as a mystery, it was clunky and labored.
Murder on the Iditarod Trail.......2007-04-23
With my love of Alaska, this book fit the bill. The Iditarod Race has began and soon a few of the contestants are being picked off one by one. Some are liked and some are wounded enough to have to stop their participation in the race. Alex Jensen begins his job during the continuation of the race to find out who is the killer. One of the racers, Jess Arnold, begins to warm Alex's heart on her brief stops during the race. Alex fears for Jess' welfare as he investigates each of the racers. How can he find the killer before Jess and the other mushers are hurt or killed? The book contains a map of the race which helps the reader to locate the position of the racers.
Taut murder mystery + dangers of the Iditarod trail = A riveting read!.......2005-09-24
The Iditarod, sometimes called "The Last Great Race," takes mushers, (dog sled racers), and their dog teams over 1150 miles of some of Alaska's roughest, most majestic terrain - jagged mountain ranges, iced-over areas of Norton Sound, frozen rivers, dense forests, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coastline. The temperatures frequently fall well below zero, with winds that can cause complete loss of visibility. Hazards of overflow, long hours of darkness and treacherous climbs and side hills are always present. From Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast, each team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher cover over 1150 miles in 10 to 17 days. The winner takes home a $250,000 purse. But one has to be alive to collect it. This year's race has a major impediment to arriving at the finish line in one piece. It seems as if one of the contestants is eliminating the competition by cruel, unusual and permanent means.
Top Iditarod mushers are dying on the trail in the most gruesome and bizarre ways. Three deaths have occurred before the halfway mark is reached in a race that has never claimed a life in its entire history. Jessie Arnold, the top female contender, is determined to win and not allow the terrible deaths/murders of her friends and colleagues to deter or distract her from her goal.
State Trooper Alex Jensen, a gifted investigator, as well as a handsome bachelor, meets the attractive Jessie during the race and the two are immediately drawn to each other. Already committed to finding the killer before he/she can do any more harm, Jensen is especially anxious for Jessie, as she is now favored to win, and has thus become a bigger threat to the murderer. As more victims fall prey to mysterious injuries, Jensen realizes that the killer is after more than money and prestige.
Although Sue Henry's "Murder on the Iditarod Trail" is filled with suspense, I must admit to being more thrilled/awed/terrified with the description of the race, the weather and its dangers, which seem much more difficult to evade than the threatened actions of a vicious, determined murderer. This excellent mystery really gives one an understanding of what a tough foe Mother Nature can be. The author wisely couples the disturbing details surrounding the murders with the dangers of the climate and the trail to build tension and rivet the reader to the page.
The Iditarod is not just a dog sled race. It is a race in which unique men and woman, from all walks of life, compete. Man and animal are pitted against nature, and as each mile is covered, a tribute is paid to Alaska's past. The Iditarod Trail, now a National Historic Trail, had its beginnings as a mail and supply route from the coastal towns of Seward and Knik to the interior mining camps at Flat, Ophir, Ruby and beyond to the west coast communities of Unalakleet, Elim, Golovin, White Mountain and Nome. Mail and supplies went in. Gold came out. All via dog sled. Heroes were made back then, and legends were born.
A fascinating and compelling read!

Murder on the Iditarod Trail.......2005-08-24
Having lived in Nome, Alaska for ten years I can tell you the book captures well the Iditarod. It is a swift & fun read. I would recommed it to anyone who wants to learn about The Last Great Race and loves mystery.
An "allrounder".......2005-07-20
This book has a good plot, good research ,well written, good characters, and a believable mystery. I was wondering how the author could justify running a race when people were getting killed but Sue Henry makes it work. I think the romance hit the right note too. I guessed who done it but that sure didn't lessen the enjoyment. I liked seeing how the ending unfolded.

Book Description
Na'dan was born into a land plagued with evil. As a wolf pup, she was cared for by a man who commanded an army against this evil. She never left his side, and the people of the land revered this unusually tame animal as a symbol that nature itself hailed the commander as the war's victor. Her image was likened in charms of gold, and her precious name became a secret among those who served her master. But when the commander was killed without attaining his destined victory, Na'dan was abandoned and forgotten. Years later, Na'dan is living as a human beggar. Possessing the ability to transform from human to animal, she is a dejected anomaly in the world of men, though she continually seeks companionship. Two Daggers is the story of Na'dan's search to be loved, her reunion with lost allies, and the discovery of her link to the evil that destroyed her former master.

Exciting and Engaging - A Great Read!.......2006-04-15
This book is simply wonderful! It's engaging from start to finish. The characters are vibrant and real, passionate and tormented, and the plot immediately picks you up and carries you along with it. The author has avoided stale convention and has created a truly original work of fantasy fiction. The large world of her story has a rich past that casts a long, ominous shadow over the events of the book. Book One stands alone as a cohesive whole, but I am hopeful to read the next installment of the story.
Great new author...Must read... Fabulous!!!!.......2006-02-20

Excellent series.......2004-11-17
I loved this series. A story about messed up people in a confused and dangerous world -but things turn out okay because of love and faith. And its all set in a scifi universe of space age exploration and a political background full of intrigue and machinations, but the story itself is firmly grounded in the experiences of the hero, Stephan Ridenour, a most tortured soul, who would do anything for some love and validation. Poor boy!

Customer Reviews:
My favorite cook book!.......2007-10-11
I am a vegetarian and this is the perfect book for anyone else who is. It's more veggie friendly rather than vegan friendly, but I'm sure you can substitute a lot of the ingredients. This is a great cookbook that has resulted in numerous wonderful meals for me. I would say that there was only one recipe in this book that I tried and didn't love.
The ingredients and instructions are presented in a clear and concise manner. This book may be a bit older, but I've used several cookbooks and this is the one that I always keep coming back to. I only wish that it would indicate difficulty level and prep time amounts.
Glad I Bought This One!!.......2007-06-30
I have been exploring tofu and other meat alternatives since my gastric bypass surgery over a year ago. I still have not been able to stomach meat. I bought several tofu books and vegetarian books and this was by far the superior one I've purchased. What I like about the book:
1. The large easy to read fonts.
2. Each recipe is layed out in steps for preparing the meal.
3. I love that the nutritional values per serving are given!!! There are so many books that do not include that information and its extrememly helpful for persons who are trying to track what they eat.
4. The recipes are appealing and simple and so far all have been mmm! mmm! good to grrreat!!
5. The recipes are broken up into segments like Dips & Spreads; Soups; Side dishes: etc. Then at the begining of each segment is an alphebetical list of the recipes in that section. So you don't always have to go to the index in the back of the book. You can turn to the segment and glance down the list of recipes to find the one you are looking for.
Because I know I will be using the book often, I took it to Fed-ExKinko's and had it spiral bound. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in this book. Remember its a tofu cookbook, not necessarily a vegetarian cookbook although most recipes in it are vegetarian or can easily be adjusted to fit the vegetarian fare.
Tofu.......2007-05-27
MMMMM... I love tofu. This book was great. I enjoyed learning new ways to prepare tofu. I had never thought of making meatloaf tofu, but it was really good. Good ideas!
Too much soy sauce........2007-05-10
My only disappointment with this book is that she relies too heavily on soy sauce, too much sodium not to mention the family tires of the taste if used more than once a week. Otherwise, I like the use of every day ingredients.
You are going to love tofu!!.......2007-03-10
I've owned this book for several years and cooked many (not all) of the recipes in it. You would not think that tofu baked with a little peanut butter and garlic powder would end up tasting like ricotta cheese, but I swear to you, it completely does, yet the fat content is drastically reduced. Louise Hagler is a tofu master! There are tofu salad dressings which imitate dairy, many tofu savory dishes, and even tofu desserts. The best thing about this cookbook are the super-simple recipes, like fried tofu, which you do in the oven, and tofu loaf, which is a veggie meatloaf. Highly recommended if only for the ideas you'll have on how to treat tofu.

Customer Reviews:
Great easy recipes.......2006-11-21
I really like this cookbook. The recipes taste great and are often acceptible for non vegetarians as well. I love that they are easy to make and use ingredients that I usually have on hand.
There are some minor annoyances with the bi-cultural aspect of the cookbook. The author tries to make the book suitable for both British and American English speakers, and this results in 1 chili (chilli) etc. On the other hand: I really like the fact that the author gives both metric and imperial measurements and says that you can use them interchangeably. I like to measure some things in tablespoons/cups and other things in grams. This cookbook is the only one that lets me do that.
This is truly a recipe book, not a book that goes into great detail about nutrition and vegetarianism. The recipes, with the exception of the desserts, are healthy, using whole foods. You can usually easily reduce the oil and/or salt to make them even more healthy. I do wish the author would use more vegetables, or give options to make meals richer in vegetables by listing possible vegetable side dishes.
I highly recommend this cookbook if you want to use more tofu in your diet. If ingredients like "sea salt" put you off and you do not think to just use regular salt instead, this cookbook may not be for you though.
Great Ideas.......2006-11-08
One of my co-workers told me about this book after she labeled me a Carbotarian, since I eat more carbohydrates than I do vegetables. The reason is because grocery stores and most restaurants are not equipped for a large selection of vegetarian food. I pretty much gave up on finding great meals to cook that weren't bland or completely green. But when I went to the Soul Vegetarian East restaurant in Chicago (where I live) and tasted all of these soul food dishes they made with tofu and soy, it threw me off. I realized then that there are creative ways to make food that I used to eat before I became a vegetarian. My co-worker, who does eat meat, was even impressed with this book. I was elated to find out that there was a way for me to eat breakfast food (Tofu Scramble) without dealing with that gross white thing in real eggs. I bought it for that recipe alone, plus this book has great advice for how to take care of tofu. I never knew you could freeze it until I read it in this book. I wasted no time jumping on Amazon.com to buy it. Nothing in this cookbook is hard for me to find, and for the most part, I already have this stuff sitting in my refrigerator so I'll finally get to use it.
Not so quick and Easy.......2004-04-20
I got this hoping that it would fit into my busy lifestyle. Well, there are only a few recipes that are both quick and easy. On top of that I was looking to add tofu to the list of things I eat, not replace every kind of dairy product with a soy product. So, if you have time to go shopping for not so common ingredients like sea salt, have a liquidizer, and are a vegan, this book would be perfect for you.
Tofu that tastes good? YUP!.......2000-05-03
I originally borrowed this book and after trying a few of the recipes, just had to have it. I couldn't believe that tofu could taste this good! Anyone can use this book and even disquise tofu so your "No I would never eat that friends" can be tricked into changing their minds! Give it a shot!

Tofu Quick & Easy.......2007-01-10
Great book and super receipts. Recommend to anyone who wants to cook with Tofu.
great introductory book to cooking wiht tofu!.......2005-06-10
If you're just starting out cooking & eating tofu, this is a definitive book to try. It is also a good book for the vegetarian cook who is trying to convince a non-veg friend, or someone who does not like or isn't sure about tofu, that tofu can taste good.
A few specifics:
Just after my aunt (a meat-eater) had gastric bypass surgery, she had trouble keeping down several types of meats, and in order to get protein as her doctor ordered, she started incorporating tofu into her diet here & there. Her favorites were the lasagna recipes. She said if you didn't know it was tofu, you'd have a hard time actually telling it apart from real ricotta-cheese lasagnas. Even my uncle, whose pickier than my aunt, and hates tofu to boot, liked the lasagna recipe.
As for me, I am in love with the macaroni & tofu with dairy free cheese. This is the closest I've come for a vegan version of macaroni & cheese, the way I grew up with it (as a dairy/meat-loving person). One recommendation: use the "follow your heart" brand vegan cheese (unless you make your own). That brand I've discovered, tends to melt the best of all the store-bought vegan cheeses I've tried.
Other favorite recipes of mine, the garbanzo bean salad, the scrambled tofu rancheros (or other scrambled tofu recipes), the cucumber-avocado soup, any of the cheesecake recipes, & deviled tofu.
So, in a nutshell, you can't go wrong with most of the recipes in this book. Some of the recipes may be bland upon first fixing, but that's nothing a little personal experimentation won't remedy.
Slim volume, but quick, easy, and delicious!.......2000-08-26
Tofu - Quick and Easy is a small cookbook packed with a bounty of wonderful recipes. The introduction provides the cook with nutritive values, cooking times, purchasing, marinating, and freezing tofu. The chapters that follow include: breakfast or brunch, dips and spreads, salads and salad dressings, soups, main dishes, and desserts. In the breakfast chapter, two of the offerings are pancakes and mushroom quiche. Both recipes are delicious ways to enhance protein intake. The dips and spreads are delectable! Pesto dip, curry-chutney, cashew spread (my favorite!), and horseradish. There are more than thirty salad and salad dressing recipes! Soups! I love chunky gazpacho! Lentil Soup! Pumpkin Soup! Spinach, and eight more choices! Main dishes? Yes! and wonderful! Amandine tofu! Oh, my goodness, mouth-watering! Enchilada casserole! Lasagne! And I LOVE this! Spring Rolls! Hawaiian Stir Fry! Scrumptious!! And many more fabulous main dishes! All deliciously filled with protein, minute amounts of fat! and low calories!!The dessert section is magnifico!! Mangia, mangia!!! Out of this world cheescakes, chocolate marble pie! Raspberry pudding, apricot pudding, creamy cookie pudding! Yum!! What a fantastic, small gem this tofu cookbook is!!
Tofu _can_ be great!.......2000-01-01
I must admit that I have not read this book, but I felt compelled to comment on Barbara's claim that tofu is necessarily bland and uninteresting. This is simply not the case. I have had tofu in Thai, Malaysian and Laotian cuisine that is nothing short of mouth-watering and superb (and I eat meat as well!). I have to conclude that it is all in the know-how. Whether this book delivers will remain to be seen....
Recipes To Make Dull Tofu Tasty.......1999-01-25
It's hard to like tofu, though it's a bargain protein food. This little cookbook has many truly quick and easy recipes to liven up the stuff and make it interesting and tasty. (I think delicious is too much to hope for under any circumstances.) Directions are easy and straightforward, good for someone who doesn't want to spend her life in the kitchen. Ingredients used in recipes are easy to find on supermarket shelves. Tofu-Raspberry pudding is going to become my favorite low-fat, low-carb dessert!

A straightforward guide to preparing tofu .......2005-01-06
Quick & Easy: A Taste Of Tofu is a straightforward guide to preparing tofu according to classic Japanese and Chinese recipes, as well as some more contemporary preparations like "Braised Beef and Tofu." Quick & Easy: A Taste Of Tofu is most assuredly not a vegetarian cookbook, since it includes recipes with meat, poutry, and seafood, but vegetarians will delight in the wealth of useful ways to prepare a delicious staple such as Seasoned Frozen Tofu and Fermented Soybean Soup. Full- color photographs on every page combined with step-by-step illustrations explicitly reveal not only how to prepare tofu, but also exactly what the dishes will look like at each step of their cooking. Above all, Quick & Easy: A Taste Of Tofu emphasizes the efficient utilization of time, and is perfect for the tofu lover on the go.
Changed my tofu life!.......2004-10-30
Although I have always considered myself a tofu fan, my use of it had been limited to fairly typical stir fries or eating it uncooked on its own. I'd never really considered crumbling it up to use in crab cakes, or marinating it and cooking teriyaki style for tofu steaks.
"A Taste of Tofu: Mastering the Art of Tofu Cooking" has opened up a new world of uses for this delicious and nutritious soybean product. The book has recipes for Appetizers, Soups, Just Tofu, Seafood, Poultry, Meats, Vegetables, Salads, Eggs and Cheese, Rice and Noodles and even Desserts. (You know you want to make a tofu cheese cake!) The selection is varied enough that both vegetarians and meat eaters will find value. There is also a good mix of "ethnic" (mainly Japanese) and American-style recipes, some traditional and some original creations.
I was surprised at how authentic the ethnic recipes were, and not "Americanized" The Japanese recipes freely use notorious ingredients like natto and konnyaku and other interesting items. I do wish the author had used the Japanese names for the dishes, as some of the new names she gives them, such as calling Oden "Tofu Casserole" are a bit of a stretch.
There are easy-to-follow instructions on handling and cooking the tofu, which does take some practice. I have had a difficult time draining the tofu properly, but am getting the hang of it more and more with each attempt. There are also some basic instructions on Japanese cooking, such as how to make your own dashi stock and other tips. There is also a glossary of ingredients in the back for some of the more unfamiliar Asian foodstuffs.
So far, I have really enjoyed the "Crabmeat and Tofu Patties," "Spicy Grilled Tofu," "Natto-jiro," "Tofu with Oyster Sauce," "Homemade Tofu Burgers," (Yum!) "Sauteed Shrimp with Hoisen Sauce" and oh...everything I have tried. I haven't hit a bad recipe yet!
