Book Description
Those hilarious southern sisters, who prove that sibling rivalry never ends, are heading for a vacation at the beach. Mary Alice's flamboyant behavior aside, serious, sensible Patricia Anne looks forward to relaxing at her sister's beachfront condo in Destin, Florida, so she kisses her ever-loving spouse Fred god-bye, reminds him to water the plants and feed the dog, and the girls head south for some fin in the sun.
Mary Alice loses no time in making the acquaintance of just about everyone in sight, so watching the sun go down on the beautiful shores of the Gulf of Mexico is a welcome respite as far as Patricia Anne is concerned. . .until a dead body washes up in the waves and the victim turns out to be one of Mary Alice's newfound friends. With no witnesses t the crime except a few great blue herons, the sisters have no choice but to bypass the clueless police and follow their own instinct to find the killer. Before long they_re on a murky trail of dirty real-estate deals, giant turtle habitats, and a sea of evidence pointing to a mammoth motive for murderer.
Customer Reviews:
The sisters solving murders in Florida........2007-01-01
This is one of the funniest series that you'll find out there, and this fourth book in the series is no exception. In this book we have Patricia Anne and Mary Alice in Florida on a holiday, and lo and behold, murder appears to be following them. Solving this one takes them into the field of shoddy real estate deals on the Florida Panhandle. But never fear. These intrepid sisters can cut their way through all the muddle and come up with the killer. And the reader gets to laugh out loud while they are doing it.
Death Goes Surfing .......2006-12-19
Patricia Anne (Mouse) and Mary Alice (Sister) are a pair of sisters from Birmingham Alabama who have very little in common aside from their bloodlines and a penchant for getting themselves all tangled up in murder investigations. In this, the fourth entry in this series the two sisters decide to spend a week at the beach where Sister (the rich one) has a condo. Mary Alice is going for a writer's conference and Mouse is tagging along because her husband Fred is going to be out of town on business. It just happens that Patricia Anne's widowed daughter Haley has a week off so she ends up going along, as does another lady who just retired from the same school that Mouse retired from. They plan on a nice girl's week out but then the dead bodies start to pile up and everything changes.
Naturally it is the girls who stumble onto the first body and the deceased turns out to be Sister's condo neighbor. In the entries before this one the sisters have tended to get involved in the investigations because a friend of theirs is a chief suspect and that pattern is repeated here. Actually Mouse does most of the investigating because Sister is so caught up in her writing conference that she has little time for snooping. She does use what little time she has to spare well though. Between them, with a little help from Haley, Mouse figures out who did it, which is something of a departure from the norm because the sisters tend to just stumble onto the solution most of the time. The mystery itself also plays a stronger part in this entry than it has in some of the others but despite the author's obvious effort to stay on plot, the fun factor is still very much in play.
The dialogue and interaction between the characters in these books is just indescribably good and the humor abounds. My wife read this book before I did and since she usually retires before I do she kept getting out of bed to come and read passages to me. All the while she was laughing so hard that she had to keep wiping away the tears. For example, there is the story that Sister writes for the conference. It is the tale of a wheelchair repossession man and it includes a scene with a little old lady in her chair chasing the guy down the street and beating him with her walking stick. If you don't think that is funny just keep in mind that Mary Alice wrote it as drama not comedy. I assure you that these two sisters will brighten up the gloomiest of days but I must admit that after reading this book I'm kind of glad that I'm an only child.
-------- Truly "a toddy for the body" --------.......2006-06-24
MURDER MAKES WAVES is another enjoyable and charming story by Anne George. Sisters Mary Alice and Patricia Anne go down to Destin, Florida, for a little get-a-way and stay at Mary Alice's condo. They take along Patricia Anne's daughter Haley and their friend Frances. The group plan to enjoy gorgeous sunsets, walks on the beach and drinks on the patio overlooking the Gulf of Mexico; however, with these two southern sisters, anything can happen and always does. When they discover a body on the beach, their detective instincts can't stop them from finding out what happened and trying to solve the mystery.
This is the fourth book in the Southern Sisters Mystery Series and a fun read. The banter, jokes and sibling rivalry always provide me with some hearty chuckles. Whenever the ladies decide to have a cocktail they refer to it as "a toddy for the body." These are great stories to share with your own sister or best friend.
Touching and Funny.......2006-05-06
Mouse and Mary Alice decide to head to the beach; it's an opportunity to get away from it all, a chance to relax, and a chance to spend time with family and friends.
While in Destin, Mary Alice attends a writer's conference. Her story of a wheelchair repo man that is featured throughout the book is both touching and funny.
I very much loved this book, because Anne George managed to weave an excellent mystery in, while simultaneously entertaining us with the antics of Mary Alice and Mouse. The world Anne George creates is a wonderful escape. It's easy to identify with the characters, and laugh with them.
Highly recommended.
Easy-Reading.......2006-02-28
This is the 3rd Southern Sisters Mystery I've read. They're easy, fast and funny murder mysteries, with lots of cute family stories intertwined in the intrigue.

Book Description
Gaultry enjoyed the simple, pastoral life of a hedge witch, where her most daunting task was to travel to the nearby village to purchase supplies. But her peaceful life is shattered when it becomes entangled in an ancient prohpesy--a prophecy which names her and her headstrong twin sister, Mervion, as their nation's salvation....or its destruction.
Customer Reviews:
Decent ideas and images, poor execution.......2005-11-21
Gaultry is a young, beautiful, spirited huntress, who has been raised by her great-aunt, a hedge-witch, on the border of Tielmaran. One day, the outer world cruelly ends her idyllic life, as a squadron of soldiers seeks to abduct her, and she finds herself a key figure in a prophecy that will bless or curse the entire realm.
Ms. Reimann creates, for the most part, a well-imagined world with some fresh touches. However, the kindest thing I can say about her telling of the story is that, this being her first novel, she shows glimmers of potential. To identify the major problems: First, the story begins, for the sake of excitement, as Gaultry and the prophecy are about to collide; consequently, the plot is over-burdened with flashbacks and info-dumps about the history of Tielmaran--information that could have been much more gracefully integrated via an earlier starting point. Second, the magic 'system' involves drawing power from the realm's gods (yet spells are called spells, not prayers), and its workings are never defined well enough to bear the crushing burden of the book's climax, which also spins out of control from Ms. Reimann's inexperienced quill. (An unfortunate example from p. 374: "There was a weird short-circuited merry-go-round through all the bodies in the circle, an unpleasantly long dance, before the Glamour-spirits were properly settled." Note that neither circuits nor merry-go-rounds are otherwise known to exist in Tielmaran.) Finally, several plot-threads are left dangling, presumably for the second and third installments.
Overall, this is worthy of a (cheap) used purchase or a library loan for undemanding fans of escapist fantasy. (Books like Green Rider by Kristen Britain and The Sword by Deborah Chester came to mind as I read this one.) However, I would certainly recommend above all of those, if one can tolerate more vivid descriptions of violence and sexual content, A Game of Thrones by George Martin; The Briar King by Greg Keyes; Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb; Rules of Ascension by David Coe; or anything by Guy Gavriel Kay (especially A Song for Arbonne and Tigana). Two stars.
Very Good.......2005-08-12
It took a while for me to get through this book, but it was worth it! It is slow going in a few spots, but for the most part is pure action/adventure with a dash of romance! I must say, I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy(?). Gaultry was a likable character, once you got used to her, and very realistic. Martin was very interesting - I didn't feel like I got to know him well enough to decide whether I liked him or not. Hopefully he will feature more in the next book. The plot of the book was good and plausible (well, as plausible as you can get in fantasy) with one country, Tielmark, having split from Bissanty. Bissanty obviously wants it back and the perfect opportunity is coming - the three hundred year anniversary. Gaultry and her sister Mervion, plus the unfathomable Martin, must intervene with the evil chancellor's plans and save Tielmark before it is too late!
Good is good, but the baddies are TOO bad.......2005-02-20
I was ~100 pages into this book when I decided to order the other 2 books in this outstanding trilogy.
The 2 lead characters (a hedgewitch & a swordsman) are very believable. 3-dimensional. Fascinating relationship between them. Dialogues so vivid that they often strike sparks. The heroine's introspective analysis of how & when to work her magic is superbly interesting. There are mysteries & foreboding & foreshadows a plenty.
It was a 5-star book all the way, until (in final 100 pages or so) the heroine and the evil twosome finally meet face to face, magic to magic.
Sadly, the 2 bad guys are so bad that I found it hard to take them seriously. They have no redeeming qualities whatsoever. They lack personality. They clobber fair maidens, break victims' ribs & teeth, snarl, skulk, & cackle with such extreme, poorly motivated cruelty that they mostly resemble the bad guys in a cartoon.
The climax was good, and the concluding scenes were grrreat - very satisfying.
I definitely want to read the 2 remaining books in this trilogy. This author knows how to weave a tale, no doubt about that. I just hope the bad guys mellow out a bit so I can rightfully disdain/hate them rather than find them pitiful & amusing.
lady gentry's bane?.......2003-01-15
Many years ago, one of my favorite fantasy series was Stephen R. Donaldson's "Lord Foul's Bane" and sequels.
Around the same time, I was in college playing D&D with a group that eventually included the author of this book, Katya Reimann.
So I'm not at all surprised to have come across her books years later and find a vivid fantasy world and writing that really draws in the reader. I tore through the first book and regretted not ordering the others at the same time. (OK, I thought there was -some- risk I might not actually like it.)
As I read the book, it reminded me of the Donaldson books in the sense of a hero(ine) who evolves a power, and is faced with various moral dilemmas along the way. But the similarity pretty much ends there. The point is, if you liked Donaldson, I think you'll like this even more. If you didn't (and I know his writing has drawn some criticism), I hope you'll still give this a shot.
Great read, couldn't put it down.......2002-12-02
I'm not quite sure what drew me to this book -- I skimmed a few pages of it before buying it.
It was a little slow to get into, but once I was able to get into it, the story drew me in, and held me fast. I admire Ms. Reimann's ability to tell a compelling, and entertaining story. I have to say that I found myself gasping at times, as the plot twisted and turned.
Great read; highly recommended.

A genius running wild..........2000-05-30
Well , what can i say , we all know that 99% of anything Niven touch becomes pure gold.
And not by mistake either. He's as talented as the devil , and knows it. buy this book to taste a bit of his humor as well , find out why superman can't have sex with human weman or read a fascinating article about teleportation. there's some fantasy in there to in "What good is a glass dagger". Overall , a wonderfull book , writen lightly by one of the best writers the world has known.
My first Science Fiction book.......1999-08-02
I read All the Myriad Ways 20 years ago. It was the first science fiction book I ever read. Thousands of books later I still vividly remember the short stories I read here. If you like Larry Niven don't miss this book.
Excellent; worth the title story alone........1998-12-03
The nonfiction essays, as exercises in informed speculation, are well-done. But my favorite parts of this classic are the two main stories: "All The Myriad Ways," and "Inconstant Moon." The latter story is better than "Titanic." I've got an old 1975 copy of this, complete with cheezy 70's computer fonts on the cover.. boy am I glad my dad bought so many books before I was born! It's well worth seeking out a copy of this one... it will not disappoint.
The best collection of short stories I have ever read!.......1998-07-17
Larry Niven's best short stories in one collection. Very hard to find b/c of its popularity. Stories are based on scientific facts and theories, as in "The Theory and Practice of Teleportation", and are often humorous, as in "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex," discussing how Superman's sperm would tear apart Lois Lane. Niven has wonderful ability to take scientific fact or theory and exploit the absurd aspects of it, while still presenting a intellectually stimulating story or essay. The title short story is my favorite short or long story ever, exploring the possibility of alternate unverses, in which every choice that could ever have been made, was made all possible ways.
very good.......1997-10-09
Short storys, the best of which deal with the extinction of manna, the energy source of magic which doom creatures whose metabolisim is based on mana. Mermaids revert to dolphins, dinosaur bones are what is left of dragons...

Customer Reviews:
Essential guide to creating and using infused oil........2004-12-28
As an avid chef, herb gardener and creator of my own decorative oil bottles, I found this book serves as an excellent companion to Michael Chiarello's "Flavored Vinegars". It covers the basics like the definition of "extra virgin" vs. "virgin" olive oil as well as the different processes for infusing: heat vs. cold. The recipes are not as extensive as other books I've read, but it is a good starting point. For other sources I would highly recommend The Flavors of Olive Oil by Deborah Krasner.
