Book Description
"Chilling. . . . The book vividly depicts a gritty, working-class part of Paris. . . . Black succeeds in making the reader feel the damp, the snow, the fear."-
Publishers Weekly
"I always wondered why I used to quicken my step in Montmartre. After reading Cara Black's wonderful book, now I know. As atmospheric as anything by John le Carre."-Philip Kerr, author of
Berlin Noir
Aimee's childhood friend, Laure, is a policewoman. Her partner, Jacques, has set up a meeting in Montmartre with an informer. When Laure goes along as backup, Jacques is lured to a rooftop, where he is shot to death. Laure's gun has been fired, gunpowder residue is on her hands, and she is charged with her partner's murder.
The police close ranks against the alleged cop killer. Aimee is determined to clear Laure's name. In doing so, she encounters separatist terrorists, Montmartre prostitutes, a surrealist painter's stepdaughter, and a crooked Corsican bar owner, and learns of "Big Ears"-the French "ear in the sky" that records telephonic and electronic communications for the security services. Identifying Jacques' murderer brings her closer to solving her own father's death, which still haunts her. She cannot rest until she finds out who was responsible.

BYORB (Bring Your Own Reference Books).......2007-02-23
This book would have been a much better read if I had read it while connected to the Internet. Why? Because it is set in France and has a great deal of French words in it, no definition of terms, and the world's smallest map. I realize that I am approaching middle age and my vision isn't what it used to be, but the publisher should be embarrassed at not bundling a magnifying glass with this map. Since you can plainly see this is a street map pieced together with tape, I suspect the map was a last minute addition to the book at the insistence of either the author or a peeved proofreader.
But I think the blame for the lack of definition of terms must fall squarely on the shoulders of the author. She has flavored this book, set in France in 1995, with a great deal of French words. Most of them are secondary to the story and are words that non-French speakers can figure out like thank you, Miss and Mr., good morning, and the like. But there are two words that annoyed me throughout the entire book - mec and flic. Mec is a word used to describe various characters, all men. But it is never clear what a mec is. Is the author describing the men as workmen, bums, toughs, as being from a particular ethnic group or having some common physical characteristic like swarthiness? I never knew.
And a flic is some form of law officer, perhaps a beat cop. But because you don't know for sure, you spend the entire book trying to decipher the hierarchy of the police department. Imagine reading a book in which the local police, sheriffs, state police, FBI, and CIA all appear, but their departments and roles are never explained. My kingdom for a glossary!
Which brings us back to the map. This book is filled with interesting descriptions of the main character's travels through Montmartre, a neighborhood of Paris traditionally frequented by artists, in an effort to help a friend accused of murder. These histories of buildings, cemeteries, neighborhoods, and artists are extremely interesting and dispensed freely and frequently and you really want to put them all into context with a map. I was left with the feeling that I could have gotten so much more out of this book if only I had been given a little more information.
Did I guess it? Yes. The mystery is unexceptional - this is one you read for the flavor of a foreign land. Try it out, but remember to have a better map and a French dictionary available.
Not Amy LeDuc's best case.......2006-12-02
I'm a great fan of Cara Black's "Murder in..." series, but I found myself in a bad neighborhood with this book in more ways than one. The story line revolves around the suspected terrorist activities of Corsican nationalists (or are they gangsters?) and detective Amy LeDuc's related attempts to clear a childhood friend of a murder charge. The descriptions of Paris streets, cafes, restaurants and other sites are as interesting as ever, but the book's story line is contrived and uneven. The story opens with a hardly credible, but helpful-for-the-scenario, breakup of LeDuc and her doctor boyfriend. The book ends with LeDuc in the arms of another BF, whom she barely knows and for whom readers have had scant information about from the body of the story. There are other problems with character development here as well--LeDuc's partner, Rene, is given unusually short shrift (what's up with the new girlfriend?) and the childhood friend that LeDuc is trying assist is written into a convenient coma-like silence without much explanation to the reader.
The main point here is that Cara Black has done much better with other stories in this series. If you are considering this book, I believe that you would do better to start with "Murder in the Bastille" or "Murder in the Marais."
Watch out for the holes under Sacre-Coeur in Montmartre.......2006-10-20
It's January 1995, and Aimee is once again involved in a murder mystery that leads her again to secrets concerning her father's death. With the Church of the Sacred Heart (Sacre-Coeur), the neighborhood of the Mound of Martyrs (Montmartre), and the stone quarry caverns below as background, Aimee tries to prove that her childhood friend (Laure) did not kill her policemen partner (yes, her friend is a flic). Laure's father was Aimee's father's partner before he left the force.
Her new friend, Guy the Doctor, has split and gone to the Sudan with Doctors Sans Frontiers (Doctors without Borders). An old friend, who Aimee has been looking for for years (Jaubert), and was part of her father's police academy group along with Morbier, turns up in a spot she least expects.
As always, our heroine, Aimee, is not only resourceful but always stylish (a true fashionista) as she snoops out the bad guys. Somehow, this time she manages to stay off her scooter and therefore is kept from running into anything or anyone.
The plotline involving some fake Corsican Separatists, who are busy selling the guns (of eastern european make) that were the basis for the case her father had been working on at the time of his death, help Aimee to bring some nagging problems from that time to closure. The rest of the plot is there for Aimee to have something to do until the more important personal issues are resolved.
Evocative story of Paris.......2006-05-29
Private Investigator Aimee Leduc is at her most sensitive right after she's dumped by her boyfriend, so she takes it hard when a childhood friend, cop Laure, is accused of murdering her partner. Aimee knows Laure would never have killed the man she viewed as her mentor, but the police have their suspect and Laure is comotose and unable to defend herself. It's up to Aimee to do the job.
Aimee's investigation quickly takes her out of the everyday world of Paris into a seamy underworld of prostitutes, underemployed musicians living rough, and Corsican terrorists. It is clear to Aimee that the murder being pinned on Laure is somehow connected to the Corsicans, but the most likely suspect turns out to be the musician who restarts Aimee's bruised libido.
Always in the background is the fear of police corruption--a corruption that destroyed Aimee's father and that continues to haunt much of the Paris police department. What secrets did Laure hide? Could Aimee's father have been, after all, involved with some underhanded scheme?
Author Cara Black continues her Aimee Leduc series with an intriguing tale set in a world where ancient vendetta coexists with modern terrorism, and where the spirit of Tolouse Lautrec haunts the streets of Montmartre, the section of Paris he profiled--and a section of Paris that remains distinct from the rest of the city.
There were times when Aimee's investigation seemed a bit improbable (her invasion of the police computer system seemed particularly far-fetched), but Black's mystery is more of an impressionistic painting than a hard-edged photograph. If you're interested in Paris and in reading an author who treats that city as a dominant character, you won't want to miss MURDER IN MONTMARTRE
Very very good series!!.......2006-05-14
The people who have said they don't like this series, well, that's OK. We all like different things. Now, as for myself, I can't stand a single book which has won the Booker Prize, except for The English Patient. I like this series of mysteries. I feel like I have gone on a vacation to Paris which may be the only way I get there. I notice that every time I read one of these, I have to go to my neighborhood cafe and read it under awnings!! This may prove hard in the winter, when it is raining or snowing!! Bravo, Cara Black!!

Book Description
Sometimes when you get what you want, it's not as good as you thought it would be. Ever since Edward's good friend Moongobble became a full magician, life has been rather boring. No more adventures.
But then Snelly comes bursting into their lives. Snelly is small -- only a foot tall -- but she's a bundle of trouble. She's the daughter of the queen of the Mischief Monsters, and she has run away. Edward, Moongobble, and their friends learn that they must return Snelly to her home right away, or her mom will start a Mischief War. And that would be really annoying!
So Edward, Moongobble, Urk, and Fireball set off on another adventure, this time to return Snelly to her home in Monster Mountain. But when they get there they find a bigger surprise waiting for them than they ever could have imagined. And Edward won't have to worry about being bored for a very long time!
Customer Reviews:
Hooray! Moongobble is back!.......2007-07-13
The Mischief Monster picks up the story of Moongobble and Edward after the events in The Evil Elves (published in 2004). Moongoble has completed his mighty tasks and is now a full fledged wizard. Alas for him but fortunately for us, this does not mean he is still not turning things into cheese or otherwise miscasting his spells. Edward is working in the garden, lamenting how dull things are since there have been no more adventures and Moongobble doesn't have any customers when a tiny monster shows up, just as Moongobble is turning Urk the toad into a tiny pink cat. Of course our intrepid band must return this little monster to her mother. But where is the Rusty Knight if he is not in his house? Will Urk ever become a toad again? Will Moongobble ever learn to cast a spell? All these questions will be answered!
This book shares all the features with its predecessors that make it practically self recommending. My sons (age 7 and 9) got a big kick out of the spells gone wrong and Urk's surly attitude. They very much enjoyed the generous number of Ms. Coville's illustrations. My impression is, however, that this book is really too juvenile for ages 9-12. It is a better bet for age 4-8, particularly if you dislike the violence in Spiderwick or the bad language in the Shluffmuffin saga. For the independent reader of chapter books in 1st-2nd grade it would be great, as it is a very nice hardcover, perfectly sized with a handsome slipcover. Adults should probably do a quick pre-read as there was one word that some might find objectionable (this was also the case in The Evil Elves but it got eidted out of my review). The Mischief Monster leave us with another quest for Moongobble and Edward so there should be at least one more volume in the saga, a good thing since young Moongobble fans are always asking for more.

The Essential J.R.R. Tolkien Sourcebook: A Fan's Guide to Middle-earth and Beyond
ASIN: 1587420198 |
Book Description
Here is the book that Tolkien fans have needed for half a century--a detailed, book-length chronology of J. R. R. Tolkien's complex tale. Whether you are a serious Tolkien fan or simply someone who enjoys reading the story over and over again, this is the book for you. It's the first totally new reference for The Lord of the Rings since the 1970s.
Beginning over 1400 years before the major events in Tolkien's epic, it describes, year-by-year, the amazing and imaginative background history that Tolkien created for his masterpiece. Then for the main narrative, it becomes a day-by-day reference, describing what each character does on that day and all the places where those events are described in Tolkien's writings. You can find out, for instance, what Merry and Pippin are doing as Sam perpares rabbit stew on the morning of March 7.
Probe deeper into Tolkien. See why someone as serious as Gandalf was interested in fun-loving Hobbits. Discover an exciting new plot, based on Tolkien's notes, that begins when Aragorn captures Gollum. Follow along as the Black Riders and Gandalf race for the Shire. Decide for yourself whether Sauron and the Ring have any ties to Hitler and Stalin. Explore what Tolkien believed about nature and technology.
A few facts illustrate how helpful this chronology is. Most of narrative is a deliberately confusing sea of next days and third days that leave readers as confused as the tale's main characters. The middle 60 percent of The Lord of the Rings gives the current date only once. In the narrative as a whole, the date is given only 23 times, or once for every 43 pages, and most of those come when the plot is moving slowly. That's why those who want to dig deeper and understand better what Tolkien was saying will find this book a must-have.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2006-12-10
Perry has done a wonderful job in untangling the very intricate tale woven by J.R.R. Tolkien. Of particular help are the copious margin notes which reference exactly where Perry is drawing the information contained within that section of his book. The commentary made by the author is a welcomed pause for reflection on the events that are taking place and keep the book from being a mere listing of dates and events. I teach a course on J.R.R. Tolkien and have found Untangling Tolkien a valuable resource, since it covers the entire history of Middle-earth: what comes before The Hobbit and what takes place after The Lord of The Rings. Bravo Mr. Perry, I look forward to reading your other books.
Knits up the ravels.......2004-10-31
An amazing accomplishment by a dedicated Tolkien fan.
That is how I'd sum up the book Untanging Tolkien. Michael Perry has first unraveled all Tolkien's "dates" -- which can be extrapolated from phases of the moon -- and then knit them together again in a cohesive outline, presented in much greater detail than Tolkien's own timeline (found buried in Appendix A of LOTR). By incorporating information from other Tolkien writings, the author of Untangling Tolkien collates additional facts about all the characters and the circumstances surrounding the War of the Ring, folding them all into this detailed chronology. He includes material that sheds light on possible parallels between Tolkien's work and events that were contemporary, and he provides original commentary that suggests some additional motivations for Tolkien's characters. Sidebars offer references to every source for the information presented and for each conclusion the author has drawn.
I found the format, with quick-reference bulleted lists and clearly delineated sections and subheadings, well-organized and easy to use.
NOTE: I read the third printing that was published in May 2004. Apparently the author has corrected many of the errors that David Bratman objected to (below). You won't find a better overview or a more throrough treatment of time and dates in LOTR than Perry provides in this book.
A Radiograph of LotR........2003-12-27
This book is layed out as a chronological record of the events covered by Tolkein's masterpiece with prefaces that explain the calender system created by Tolkein and its conversion to our more mundane (and possibly inferior) system. The type is clear, and margin citations clear and present for every entry. It's primary utility, at which it succeeds admirably, is as a kind of radiograph of Tolkein's work that reveals its astonishing complexity more clearly and allows one to admire, and more importantly, explore the book itself more quickly, easily, and deeply.
The book also contains copious notes inline with the chronology. These vary from informative to tangential, but at worst do not detract from the book's primary function. Mr. Perry is perhaps foremost as Lewis scholar, and so C.S. Lewis, a close acquaintance and friend of Tolkein, makes a number of appearances. Also making appearances in the notes are William Shakespeare and Winston Churchill.
All in all, a unique book which will save anyone who wants to do an in depth study of LotR a lot of time.
Splendid Tolkien Reference Work.......2003-12-21
Superb, exhaustive chronology of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga. Perry does a superior job in untangling a number of thorny chronological issues in Tolkien's narrative, and he employs some fine literary detective work in reconstructing what events are happening across Middle Earth on any given date. Especially admirable is his reconstruction of how much moonlight there was during each day of Frodo and Sam's journey into Mordor.
In addition to chronology, Perry supplies a lot of background information about Tolkien's themes and sources, as well as biographical tidbits about Tolkien. For example, there are fascinating discussions of Tolkien's views of technology, freedom, and totalitarianism. Perry also discusses Tolkien's stance toward the misuse of Germanic myths by the Nazis.
This is a great resource for Tolkien-lovers everywhere.
a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia.......2003-12-21
A year-by-year, later day-by-day, chronicle of the war against Sauron from the founding of the Shire to the glorious conclusion seems at the outset like a good idea. Perry calls LOTR's Appendix B, the Tale of Years, "far from complete" but it covers the whole period: what he means is that it's not detailed enough for him. Appendix B won't tell you which day Sam cooked coney for Frodo; Perry will.
But alas, the book does not stop there. The entries are written as bullet lists like a PowerPoint presentation, and many add pointless little flowcharts such as two-generation family trees. They reduce Tolkien's magnificently complex subcreation into a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia. And each yearly or daily entry comes with its commentary, whether directly relevant, side points, broader considerations, or dogmatic essays in applicability. The unrelieved banality and inappropriateness of these must be read to be believed; as also the author's clumsy, grammatically inept style, and his smug superiority to the characters. (He frequently criticizes the good guys' "blunders," all of them more complex than he implies.)
There's actually some good chronological analysis and speculation hiding in here. But how can someone who knows his Tolkien that well say that the wizards were Valar, or that Rohan gave Isengard to Saruman (it wasn't theirs to give, and Saruman was made its warden, not a freeholder), that Boromir and Faramir had a sibling rivalry (Tolkien specifically says not), or suggest that Galadriel should have sent daily eagles to check up on the Fellowship?
These are not isolated examples: the bloopers and misconceived ideas go on and on. The whole book is like that: it has the soul of a PowerPoint presentation. I can't recommend it on any terms.

No Third Book.......2001-05-15
This was a great continuation of his first book. The bad news is that Robert Adams died before he could write the last book so we won't know what he was planing to do, but the series was leading to somewhere good. Well worth reading the books
Another goodie..........2001-05-04
Wonderful and engrossing....although "Cool Blue" got on my nerves at times! Acording to what I've seen, the third book in the series was entitled "Guideposts to Danger", and only saw one printing...I would be extremely grateful if anyone could tell me where to get a copy...Thanks!
One of his best.......2001-04-24
I have read many of Robert Adams' books. And I found most of them enjoyable and well written.
This series is one of his best.
Sadly, Robert Adams died over 10 years ago and we won't ever find out how he planed this series to turn out.
I do not hesitate to suggest that this book and vol. 1 be read anyway.
The Best.......2001-01-02
I recently re-read both Book 1 and Book 2 and was again amazed at the great amount of detail left hanging for the next book. Is there a number 3? If anyone knows, where can I get a copy?
Stairway to Forever & Monsters and Magicians.......2000-05-27
These are both extraordinary books with one slight drawback....no-one seems to know where book 3 is. If anyone can find it let me know.....

Beware of puns.......2004-08-07
My least favorite warlock book. Things mentioned in rock music come to life in witch moss. It reminded me of Xanth.
Definitely thought provoking........1999-10-10
I own every book in the Warlock series except this one. I have read and enjoyed it however. I felt that this book dealt more with a fun aspect of modern culture invading a medieval one instead of an evil aspect. I sincerely hope they reprint this one as well as some of the other earlier books in the series. This author is always one of my recommended reads. Even if you don't agree with all of his views, he always makes you think, even about the affects of rock and roll.
Lame. Christians against rock-n-roll music........1999-05-03
Takes one of the dumber planks of the religious right and tries to make a story around it. Some Christians think rock and roll music leads to evil. Apparently Mr. Stasheff is one of these.
A very imaginative book.......1998-10-20
The Warlock rock is the first book I have read in this series, but I like what I've seen. The characters are convincing, and the plot is very inventive. I reccomend this book to both fantasy and science fiction lovers.

Thank you.......2003-03-21
I have been so busy reading. Sorry I didn't rate sooner.
A simple classic!.......2001-11-02
We'd bought this book when it originally came out and it became so worn and well-loved that I just purchased the new version. It is just as fantastic as the original! The recipes are simple (but not boring) and very flavorful. The whole family enjoys them!
Old news, not good news.......2001-08-21
This is an older book that in no way represents the new diets for diabetics. Using the old ADA diet is not a way for most diabetics to prevent high blood sugars or other problems that can happen down the line. The new diets for diabetics using low-carb diets is very important. American people did not get fat eating low carb but did do so eating a diet much like the ADA high carb diets. Even the ADA is in process of preparing a new diet guidline based upon low carb diets and not an exchange program.
The Complete Step-By-Step Diabetic Cookbook.......2001-01-03
This book offers quick, easy and delicious recipes for diabetics and nondiabetics. I use it often for home, as well as for dishes taken to outings.
The Complete Step-By-Step Diabetic Cookbook.......2000-02-18
This is really a great book. The meals are easy to fix and delicious. This book is my Bible. I can look at the recipe quickly and decide if it is within my carb count. I would recommend this book to anyone with diabetes.
