A middling entry in the Anna Pigeon series, but important for character development in series as a whole.......2007-06-13

The book is set in the Statue of Liberty National Monument (which includes Ellis Island). These sites are prominent in the American imagination but Anna Pigeon spends much of her time rummaging around the unfamiliar "backside" of these parks. The result is fascinating: I had no idea what was lurking off-stage at both sites.

The story combines a mystery set at the park with a continuation of Anna's personal sagas involving her sister and a more-or-less boyfriend. Because of the weight given this part of the story, you should read other Anna Pigeon books before tackling this one. In fact, this book really needs to be read in proper sequence because some of these personal issues reach resolution in a way that appears in later books - - which would then "give away" the story in this one.

The book has that odd feeling of those books and movies set in New York before 9/11. Anna regularly looks back to the Manhattan skyline and refers to the World Trade Center, for example. The sense of anachronism is enhanced by the fact that there are some white supremacist characters and Barr refers several times to the Oklahoma City bombings - - events that we all seem to have forgotten in the post-9/11 world. As it turns out, some of those things play an important part in the mystery. If these issues strike too close to home for you, don't read this book.

Overall, this is a welcome addition to the Anna Pigeon series, about in the middle in terms of overall quality. The mystery is perhaps on the low side of average, the issues surrounding the recurring characters on the high side of average, and the sense of place surprisingly good.

The Characters & Settings Trump the Plot.......2007-01-31

Tough yet vulnerable Anna Pigeon, worried about her sister who is very ill in the hospital in New York, spends some time on the Ellis and Liberty Island National Monuments. While dealing with her sister's crisis, she faces dangers of her own.

I enjoyed Anna as a heroine--she's well written and very real. I enjoyed how Nevada Barr was able to describe the "behind-the-scenes" settings of the Monuments, the part the tourists never see, and make you feel like you are truly there. She is deft at writing suspense while still keeping her characters and their situations engaging.

I didn't really care for the mystery or its resolution--in my mind, the plot took second place to the settings and characters. But I did enjoy the book and probably will read more.

What's Going On With Lady Liberty?.......2005-10-30

As the cover shows, this fast-paced contemporary mystery was published before the planes crashed into the Twin Towers. Our favorite park ranger returns home to New York City to be with her sick sister. Anna of the National Park Service stays with a fellow ranger out on Ellis Island in the Gateways Park where my favorite monument is on her own island nearby. The only wildlife she finds in the deserted, crumbling building where the immigrants used to stay before entering the mainland of U.S.A. are the pigeons. You'd think there might be some seagulls.

On Liberty Island, where the national treasure, France's gift to us stands tall, Anna finds some unexplained, tragic events unfolding right before her eyes. A young teenager, running from the guard at the top of the Statue of Liberty, falls to her death and other assaults begin in a brutal rein of terror. These two famous tourist attractions, one updated and in good condition, the other overgrown in eerie ruins hiding who-knows-what from the milling daytime crowd. At night, Anna finds it downright dangerous.

When she's not sleuthing around this majestic Lady for clues to what is going on, she finds romance at the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital with a surgeon, David Madison. Her sister's fiance, Fred, used to be her 'special friend,' and she takes the opportunity while visiting Molly to make peace with him.

After 9-11-01, this landmark of New York (on the new quarter) was closed for over a year. Who knows where similar events may occur in the future -- until the war is over! Nevada Barr, who was a ranger in another of my favorite places, the Natchez Trace Parkway in three states, wrote TRACK OF THE CAT, FLASHBACK, HIGH COUNTRY, DEEP SOUTH, and her latest, HARD TRUTH.

One of Barr's best.......2005-06-22

I think this is one of the best Anna Pigeon novels. The mystery is tightly spun, and the National Park backdrop that always plays such an integral role in Barr's novels is intriguing and spooky. The story of Anna's relationships with her sister and FBI agent Frederick Stanton also continues to develop in this book, which I enjoy. In general, I think Anna becomes an even more complex character and we understand more of her personal turmoil while enjoying a good whodunnit.

I am just 100 pages into this plotless story of falling down buildings. I thought I would check the reviews to see if others thought it worth spending my time on to the end. Since I have read 3 or 4 others by Nevada Barr, I don't know why I am having such a tough time with this one. I have set it aside once and picked it up again. This time I've managed to struggle thru 100 pages, but so far it hasn't hooked me.

Starts strong, ends weak.......2005-04-02

I really want to like this volume. However, it has problems.

Chapters 1-3 introduce us to Kyoko, the new female penguin trainer.

Chapter 4 features Musashi going on a movie date with one of Minako's friends.

Chapters 5-7 sees the return of Kyoko, as she seeks to utterly embarass Minako at a Christmas swimsuit celebration, and Gin must try to stop, even if hindered by Mike in a "Satan" suit.

Chapter 8 sees Gin trying to help out a down-on-his-luck street musician.

There is a "bonus" story featuring bit players previously seen in the series, but as its not actually a bonus, it actually takes away space that should have gone to Gin, which is nowhere to be found in the story.

Between the bad bonus story, and how they misused Kyoko, I must dock this book by a star. Still, highly recommended.

Weakest entry, but necessary setup.......2007-08-19

I read this book some time ago, and didn't write a review because existing reviews already covered this book's flaws well enough - Half the book is vignettes about Giraut's youth, largely unrelated to the plot, which is pretty weak this time around. But now the sequel is out, Armies of Memory. Having read that, I can tell you that what plot there is in Merchants is a direct setup to events in Armies, so don't skip this one - it will ultimately be well worth the read.

Very weak entry in the series.......2006-04-26

This is the third in the series, and the weakest entry so far. It begins immediately after the end of the second book, with the OSP having to deal with the political ramifications accompanying the shocking loss of an entire world, and with Giraut having to deal with being used by his friend and boss, Shan -- although Giraut seems to react pretty emotionally for an intelligence agent. In fact, only the last third of the book contains any amount of action or plot. The first two-thirds is divided between back-story -- how Giraut acquired his close group of friends in boarding school, plus a series of isolated anecdotes (mostly involving his wife, Margaret) set in the decade between the first and second books -- and a deep psychological dissection of what it's like to have a dead friend's personality living in the back of your brain for a couple of years while his cloned body is grown and made ready for his reoccupation. Barnes also uses the rather thin ostensible plot -- protecting these "canned" personalities from commercial exploitation for entertainment purposes -- as an excuse to explore Earth's own society, and to show that it's just as bizarre as any frontier world in human-occupied space. While all this is fascinating in itself, it doesn't make for much of a story. And when the real action begins, with a very public assassination, the plot that unfolds turns out to have had nothing whatever to do with anything we were told earlier in the book. Talk about left field!

Another Noble Barnes Effort.......2003-08-26

Another wonderful read by John Barnes. His books are always enjoyable and fun to read and never take themselves too seriously. ... it was quite good and told an interesting story, although I will say the ending was a little too silly for me. Don't read this book without first having read, "A Million Open Doors" and "Earth Made of Glass", in that order. These books introduce us to the world of the 1000 Cultures and Giraut Leones, the first person protagonist of all the novels. They are also enjoyable stories, set in a very believable futuristic world.

Anyone who doubts Barnes "predictions" for Earth 900 years from now, just has to watch a kid play X Box or talk to those people who live in their role playing computer worlds. Barnes just takes this desire of people to want to live in a fantasy world to its logical conclusions. I enjoyed this book very much and can't wait for the next one in the series.

A very human story.......2003-07-27

Unlike the other reviewers of this book, I found the obviously deeply personal involvement in the plot of this book to parallel the attitudes and observations of our hero, Giraut. There is a deep synergy, to me, between the writing style, the character's emotions, and the plot of the book. Very different from the first book of the series and similar in style to the second, I was amazed at the depth and clarity provided by the dual personalities in the main character and the time spent reviewing what made the protagonist who he was. Certainly not typical sci-fi, it may be hard-to-swallow for a person looking for futuristic adventure. As existential fiction, however, it seemed right-on.

John Barnes can do better. Rambling plot threads, links to concepts in previous books not explained for a new reader to this series. I was unable to connect to the characters, and thus finally gave up at page 200 (out of 400) after many attempts to pick it up again, threw on the fire. Sorry John

I love this book. I just learned how to play guitar, and this book shows exactly what chords to use to make it sound the best. It includes all the songs on the CD except for "Effigy".

Overall the book itself is worth the price. However I'm not very fond of all of her songs. I was mainly looking for her song "Kind and Generous." If you really like her songs then I would suggest purchasing the book, however if you only like one then i would suggest looking for a site that has the music.

If you baked your cookies from scratch, or used the recipes in this book using regrigerated dough - nobody will know! You'll know though, because you'll have less mess and more free time.

I used to love baking everything from scratch, and I still do from time to time (seems like twice a year now - Christmas and Easter). But when you become a Mom, although you're intentions were there, baking from scratch is often something there is just not time for anymore. This book gets you bake sale ready cookies that will win you raves as well as raise funds, office coffee room cookies that will be gone within minutes and gourmet cookies that your friends and family will want the recipes for. People will be whispering behind your back that you're the next Mrs. Fields.

Using the refrigerated dough is also less ingredients for the baker on the go - just grab a few rolls and you're halfway there. Stock up on the mix ins, and you're done!

Fresh Ideas In Baking.......2005-12-07

After just flipping through this book I knew I HAD to own it. I already have a list of about 20 recipes to try, but figuring out which one to make first is the real problem! Will it be the Lipsmacker Lemon Bars, or the Coffee & Cream White Chocolate Chunkers? The list goes on and on, I will have to choose soon so I know what to take to the "Cookie Fest" we are having at work next week. I think whatever I make I will have nothing to bring home but an empty plate. Books like this do not come along very often, so grab a copy, preheat the oven and have fun!

I'm not sure I would have predicted I'd have used this so much, but I've ended up making more cookies from this one little book than any other on my shelf (and there are many). I'm an ambitious baker, but when it comes to those night-before moments when I need to bake a batch of cookies for somewhere or someone, I'm more often than not a bit too tired. This is simply a very handy book and I've had lots of success with the recipes (although, looking back, almost 100% of my choices have been citrus-type cookies. I think the addition of bright flavors is what makes the dough taste like homemade). The lemon poppyseed tart is also quite good, very pretty and people were impressed (I put fresh blackberries on top--gorgeous).

This is a cookbook I really do use--a lot. I like some of the very easiest recipes in here, especially the variations on the chocolate chip cookies. They really taste unique. A friend of a friend who worked as a pstry chef thought the peppery ginger chocolate chip cookies (they have cryst. ginger and pepper mixed in) were brilliant and wanted the recipe--thy're that good. Smart ideas, smart book, worth the money.

Kudos! Great book, especially for the occasional baker. I love love love the lemon ginger gems (soft, you add crystallized ginger 1 package 3-ounce cream cheese, lemon zest to sugar dough). I like more innovative cookeis like that and the coffee toffee bars and pretty much all of the cheesecake creations throughout the book. The rest of the gang in my house can't get enough of some of the simpler ideas (my husband can vouch for the fluffer nutter choc chip cookie sandwiches: peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwiched between chocolate chip cookies--so easy and so YUMMY!) and the big cookies you can make and decorate like a pizza--big kid favorite.

Hope there's a follow-up book, becasue I'll get it.
