Book Description

Lieutenant Horatio Caine of the Miami-Dade Crime Lab is called in to investigate a mysterious death at an organic eatery. He finds the victim, waiter Phillip Mulrooney, bent over a stainless steel toilet, his clothing shredded. There are burn marks on his face and cell phone fragments scattered around, and his shoes are blown off his feet. Incredible as it seems, the initial evidence points to death by lightning strike.

The staff at The Earthly Garden believe Mulrooney's death is an act of God -- punishment for straying from the Vitality Method, their spiritual philosophy that inner beauty can be revealed by nurturing the physical and spiritual.

The only philosophy Lieutenant Horatio Caine believes in is justice for the victim -- and he'll move heaven and earth to get it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2006-11-08

I originally picked this book up as a "cheesy" read for the beach or on an airplane, and I was surprised at how good it was! It really captured the essense of the characters, and while it was technical in places it was very readable and understandable.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely better than the Collins books.......2006-06-28

This book was a lot truer to the television series than the two previous books in the genre. The characters voices were very much in tune with what you see on the screen, and the situation was unique enough to capture your attention, and plausible enough to believe it. The original characters were *people* and not cardboard cutouts. The language flowed smoothly, the settings didn't overpower the story, and the story didn't jerk from place to place to suit the author's timeframe. I for one am eagerly awaiting the next book - something I will NEVER do for Mr. Collins.

5 out of 5 stars Keep 'em coming!.......2006-05-12

This is the first CSI:Miami book I've read; I've watched the TV series often. I was delighted that the author caught the essence of the TV characters. I could hear the voices and phrasing of the actors as I read.
I think the appeal of the CSI series is that we can actually learn something new while we are being entertained. For me, the book version enhances that learning opportunity, without the sometimes gory special effects distractions.
Overall, the book has a lively and interesting plot line, and showed skillful use of technical details. I look forward to more CSI:Miami books by this author.

I am a great fan of the CSI: series TV shows and absolutely love the CSI: books written by Max Allan Collins. Eager to read another CSI: Miami book, I decided to give Donn Cortez a try. This author clearly does not have the feel for the characters and smooth storylines of the TV show. The book was filled with too many technicalities on rocket-building, etc., and is just bogged down with excessively detailed explanations. I am an avid reader, and this has to be one of the worst books I have read in a long time. If you want to read a CSI: book, stick to the ones written by Max Allan Collins!

4 out of 5 stars One God, One Son, One Holy Spirit, numerous Bibles, many sects and practices!.......2005-06-25

This book is fascinating-very, very fascinating. I live in Del Rio, Tennessee, and am well aware that "snake handling" exists. However, since it is not a subject of idle discussion, I knew very little about its history and its continuing adherents and practices. I was excited when my librarian showed me the newly arrived book. I had it shipped to me from Amazon immediately--to add to my collection of books about Cocke County, Tennessee, and its various communities. I am sad that the practice is outlawed. I feel if a person, through their sincere religious belielf (and who is an adult, and can advisedly choose to do so), chooses this practice, that under our country's constitutional guarantee of freedom of and from religion, that they should be allowed to do as they wish. I see the practice as part of a belief system that is no stranger than belief systems and practices of many other religions around the world. This book is a very valuable source of information about a very minority religious belief and practice, and belongs in the library of anyone who studies religion. Thank you Jimmy Morrow for bravely sharing this information at your own personal risk of arrest at one of your church(es) services!

HOWEVER, I thought an editor's job was to prepare text for publication. This book has endless disconcerting and distracting sentence fragments, singular words when plurals are needed, and grammatical failures of every description. Even person's names will be spelled differently from one paragraph to the next. I used to make part of my living as a typesetter, and if I'd received a manuscript in this condition, I would have called the "author," and asked a lot of questions. If the editor typed it himself (or used a typesetter or typist), then he could have made great use of a proofreader! It is sad to have some much detailed and fascinating information delivered in such a constantly muddled format! If not for that, this would definitely be a FIVE STAR BOOK.

4 out of 5 stars All of David's Strengths (and Weaknesses).......2005-09-20

I love Peter David when he writes comics. In that medium, he is one of my absolute favorites. Unfortunately, his skill doesn't seem to translate into other areas quite as well. Don't misinterpret that though because this is a pretty good novel.

It's short, and I like short. Modern fiction of nearly every genre is soooo long. And the stories are not any deeper, the writing any more complex. They're just loooong, excessively plotted, redundantly written. I rarely read a novel that can't lose at least a hundred pages. My GF says most people are wannabe writers but that I'm a wannabe editor. True, because even this novel could lose a few pages here or there.

But it's still good. An amusing idea presented in an interesting style. Read the summary if you want the plot. I'm not going to get into it. But if you're looking for something fairly unique, I recommend it.

One of the better, unintended elements of the novel to me is that occasionally it breaks into present tense and has the wolf talk to the narrator. These bits were totally unnecessary to me, and since they were italicized, I just skipped them automatically. If you the kind of reader who likes them, then go right ahead. I liked the easy way of telling what I didn't care about reading, though it was unintentional. I wish more books did that.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and Quick.......2005-09-03

Peter David's book, Howling Mad, sat on my shelf for over a year before I picked it up to read. Three hours later I put it back. Why? I was done!

The book moves along like a well-edited movie. There's lots of humor, action, and plenty of supernatural goings on. David even includes a bit of romance. Before the premise can get old, the book ends with a satisfying conclusion.

While it's not a great book, it's a great read.

            4 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2004-07-14

I happened to catch this book for $1 and I gotta say I REALLY liked it. I don't know that I woulda been happy if I had paid the $5.99 that on the cover?! But I would recommend this for anything that enjoys a good supernatural beings book ( vampires, werewolves, fairies, etc... ). It handles it well.

            A Comedy?

I don't think so... But, it is rather tongue-in-cheek at a few points, it'll make you chuckle.

I guess the best light I could put it in is this...
If this was a TV show?
I would compare this to a mixture of "The X-Files and Monk".
There's something to make you smile, but it ain't JUST a comedy...
            and
There's something to creep you out a little too...

            Good read!
Wish I could meet the author, I would love to talk with someone that can think like the writer of this book obviously does...

4 out of 5 stars Everything happens for a reason........2004-06-29

Although I did not find this novel as funny as the Sir Apropos trilogy, it did have it's moments (Not many things have been able to surpass those books). Peter David did a terrific job in giving this type of a story substance; the story wasn't just about a wolf being bitten by a werewolf but a clever way of executing how animals must think humans behave. Also, everything that occured happened for good reason: Darlene's purse, bat breaking, and not to mention a cavity filled mouth. This was worth the read and I would definitely recommend to friend.

            5 out of 5 stars Great story.......2004-02-17

Although the ending leaves a few questions unanswered, this book was very memorable. David is very to the point, and very clever in writing his story. David is able to tell an all around amusing story, with memorable characters, and memorable scenes.

              Book Description

he music industry’s most outspoken, outrageous, and phenomenally successful executive delivers a rollicking memoir of pop music’s heyday.

During the 1970s and '80s the music business was dominated by a few major labels and artists such as Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Barbra Streisand and James Taylor. They were all under contract to CBS Records, making it the most successful label of the era. And, as the company’s president, Walter Yetnikoff was the ruling monarch. He was also the most flamboyant, volatile and controversial personality to emerge from an industry and era defined by sex, drugs and debauchery.
Having risen from working-class Brooklyn and the legal department of CBS, Yetnikoff, who freely admitted to being tone deaf, was an unlikely label head. But he had an uncanny knack for fostering talent and intimidating rivals with his appalling behavior—usually fueled by an explosive combination of cocaine and alcohol. His tantrums, appetite for mind-altering substances and sexual exploits were legendary. In Japan to meet the Sony executives who acquired CBS during his tenure, Walter was assigned a minder who confined him to a hotel room. True to form, Walter raided the minibar, got blasted and, seeing no other means of escape, opened a hotel window and vented his rage by literally howling at the moon.
In Howling at the Moon, Yetnikoff traces his journey as he climbed the corporate mountain, danced on its summit and crashed and burned. We see how Walter became the father-confessor to Michael Jackson as the King of Pop reconstructed his face and agonized over his image while constructing Thriller (and how, after it won seven Grammies, Jackson made the preposterous demand that Walter take producer Quincy Jones’s name off the album); we see Walter, in maniacal pursuit of a contract, chase the Rolling Stones around the world and nearly come to blows with Mick Jagger in the process; we get the tale of how Walter and Marvin Gaye—fresh from the success of “Sexual Healing”—share the same woman, and of how Walter bonds with Bob Dylan because of their mutual Jewishness. At the same time we witness Yetnikoff’s clashes with Barry Diller, David Geffen, Tommy Mottola, Allen Grubman and a host of others. Seemingly, the more Yetnikoff feeds his cravings for power, sex, liquor and cocaine, the more profitable CBS becomes—from $485 million to well over $2 billion—until he finally succumbs, ironically, not to substances, but to a corporate coup. Reflecting on the sinister cycle that left his career in tatters and CBS flush with cash, Yetnikoff emerges with a hunger for redemption and a new reverence for his working-class Brooklyn roots.
Ruthlessly candid, uproariously hilarious and compulsively readable, Howling at the Moon is a blistering You’ll Never Eat Lunch in this Town Again of the music industry.

                Book Description

An examination of Holland Smith's career in the Marine Corps follows its evolution from an insular constabulary at the turn of the 20th century to a juggernaut, landing American troops island by island in vital amphibious engagements up to 1945. Serving in important assignments from the Philippines to China to Latin America, Smith became deeply involved in the development of amphibious strategy and tactics, as well as in the creation of proper landing craft by the early 1930s. After Pearl Harbor, the Marines would turn to him to plan and lead operations in the Gilberts, the Marianas, and the Volcano Islands, culminating in the epic operation at Iwo Jima. Venzon details the life of this quiet, modest man who, she contends, deliberately cultivated the persona of an irascible, unreasonable perfectionist, in an effort to do everything possible to protect the Marines under his command. Smith braved malaria and dengue fever in the Philippines, sailed through the backwaters of post-Manchu China, and fought in the earliest "banana wars" in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. After World War I, he was the first Marine to attend the General Staff College at Langres, and from then on became am important member of 4th Marine Brigade Staff, and later on the staff of the army's I Corps. Here, he learned that war in the new century would be as much about planning, logistics, communications, and intelligence as it was about brute force. Upon his return to the United States, he attended both the Naval War College and the Marine Corps Command and Staff College. By 1940, he commanded the First Marine Division. His deliberately explosive behavior, however, would ultimately push him out of the circle of legendary World War II leaders.

4 out of 5 stars Scratching, clawing and biting satire from the MAD gang.......2005-04-01

"MAD" is, by its own admission, America's longest-running humor magazine (besides "Time"). True, its circulation has plummeted and Alfred E. Newman's influence is but a shadow of its former self, but that happens to most American institutions. Besides, when I graduated high school the magazine was at its peak circulation (2.8 million), so that fact it sells about 250,000 copies a month today is not my fault. What is important is that "MAD" has always been "a magazine mainly for youngsters and adolescents getting their first taste of the joys of seeing sacred cows turned into hamburger." That means the magazine's readership is 80% male and the median age is 17.

"Howling MAD," with its cover shot of Alfred E. Newman as a werewolf, was the 23rd paperback collection of reprints from "MAD" magazine. Usually I am disappointed not to find any of the classic "MAD" movie parodies in one of these paperbacks, but there are some nice jabs at "Intellectual TV Shows Geared to the 'Seven-Year-Old Mind'" that is pretty good (if you are old enough to remember "The Huntley-Brinkley Report," "Twentieth Century," etc.). Otherwise the target here is more society in general, although perhaps skewing a bit older in terms of how old you need to be to get the point of the jokes and satire.

We begin with "The MAD Celebrity Primer" ("Any idiot can write a Primer. Even you can write a primer"), which puts a satirical twist on celebrity in America (surprise), which continues later in the volume with the private showings of "Celebrities' Home Movies." There is also a comprehensive look at "Chicken: The Magazine for Gentle Men," which goes after the other end of the American spectrum. If that twist on "Playboy" is not a more adult subject matter, then that would be "Labor Day Cards from Management to Labor" and "If They Had Summer Replacement in Everyday Life."

Of course, you will find your familiar gang of idiots making contributions. There are a couple of Spy vs. Spy bits by Antonio Prohias, a couple of visits to the Don Martin department, Dave Berg looks at "The Lighter Side of Winter" and then at "Teenagers," and on a historical note the very first bit Sergio Aragones did for the magazine in "A MAD Look at the U.S. Space Effort." Ironically, "Howling MAD," first published in 1974, predates the point when they were giving credit to the artists and writers of these works. But if you do not recognize the artwork of Mort Drucker or Al Jaffee by now, you have just not been paying attention.

Nothing is too sacred for it to be lampooned in Mad magazine, to the benefit of us all. Among others, in this book there are sections on:

*) If corporations ran summer camps.
*) If they had summer replacements in everyday life.
*) If the U. S. government bought like the U. S. public buys.
*) The lighter side of winter.
*) Labor Day cards from management to labor.
*) Mad's football roundup for little-known schools and colleges.

There is no one better at writing satire of the American public than the staff writers of Mad. The best satire has a bite to it and that found in this book really bites. I laughed out loud at many of the jokes and I am sure you will as well.

                              Book Description

More than 400 recipes, forty-eight menus, entertaining tips, table decorations, and sumptuous photographs make this the most engaging and ambitious Junior League collection to date.

At home for members of the Junior League can mean anything from a Mother's Day brunch or an elegant dinner for six to a Labor Day backyard barbecue or a Pumpkin-fest celebration. The menus and recipes in this all-new collection reveal the diversity of the members of the Junior League and their close connection to ethnic, regional, and family foodways handed down and refined from one generation to the next.

From appetizers to desserts-and all the courses in between-The Junior League at Home features favorite home-tested recipes drawn from League cookbooks and members. Each of the twelve chapters offers a selection of seasonal menus with advice for planning and food preparation. The book also highlights ideas for stress-free entertaining, as well as innovative tablescape and decorating suggestions-including a fully illustrated section on the lost art of napkin folding.

4 out of 5 stars A very good source for family meals and entertaining at home.......2004-03-10

This `Junior League' cookbook is almost exactly what you would expect from such an organization, where all recipes appear to come from home cooks. I give this book four stars (with a caveat) instead of three because it surpasses expectations in at least two ways. First, it provides four complete entertaining and family menus per month, with instructions on day before and other advance preparations to prepare for the meal. Second, the range of dishes is very international. I was surprised to find a good recipe for Filipino spring rolls. This is not exactly Iowa church supper fare.

My biggest caveats about this book follow.

First, while the recipes are arranged by month, I believe no thought was given to whether or not fresh ingredients were appropriate for that month. The first menu is serving artichokes in January. I know the recipe calls for canned artichokes, but the sense of oddness persists. The presence of green beans and green grapes on the same menu is a testament to the incredible food distribution network which can bring California and South American produce to a Pennsylvania produce market in virtually any month of the year. But this market still does not have artichokes in January.

Second, the recipes are from many different sources, and these sources are neither professional chefs nor professional food writers. This means the quality of the recipes will be very uneven. One cannot depend on the fact that all recipes will have a uniform reliability as you would if the book in your hand was from Ina Garten or Sheila Lukins or Rachael Ray. This is important if your objective is to improve your cooking skills. As an amateur who wishes to learn new techniques from most dishes I make, I would sooner go to a book by Mario Batali or Jaques Pepin.

Third, there are a lot of prepared food ingredients in the recipes. If, like me, you are adverse to ingredients which come from the Merck Index rather than the farmer's market, I would just as soon stay away from such recipes.

Lastly, the organization of recipes is a little odd in that types of dishes are overlaid onto the monthly chapters. This would have been much better done by having 24 chapters rather than 12 which address two different purposes.

I must say this book is printed and bound so that it is very easy to use in the kitchen, as long as you have plenty of room for it's 8 ½ by 11 spiral bound format in your kitchen. This format lies flat and is very easy to photocopy pages. It also has a good index, which you may not find in most volunteer / fund raiser books of this type.

Recommended for home cooks who are not `foodies' intent on learning cooking techniques or food lore.

I was so excited to see that the Junior League has come out with another "best of" cookbook! And just in time for the holidays. I have the previous two books, the Junior League Celebration Cookbook and the Junior League Centennial Cookbook, and I have loved giving them to family and friends as gifts. Now, here's another.

It's beautiful, and I can't wait to try out some of the recipes. The other two have not disappointed, and I don't expect this one to either!
