Death of an Expert Witness (Adam Dalgliesh Mysteries)
ASIN: 0743219570
Release Date: 2001-05-01 |
Book Description
Headstrong and beautiful, the young housemaid Sally Jupp is put rudely in her place, strangled in her bed behind a bolted door. Coolly brilliant policeman Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard must find her killer among a houseful of suspects, most of whom had very good reason to wish her ill.
Cover Her Face is P. D. James's electric debut novel, an ingeniously plotted mystery that immediately placed her among the masters of suspense.
Customer Reviews:
The start of a wonderful saga.......2007-09-19
This is the first book in the series that has made PD James the first name in British mysteries. It sets the tone for the books that will follow and you will be eager to see Adam Dalgliesh develop into Scotland Yard's ace detective. So I would recommend that you start your adventures with Adam here at the beginning.
The Butler Didn't Do It.......2006-12-24
The supreme joy of reading is to discover a new author with the talent to not only to transport you to an undiscovered world but with the skill and imagination necessary to teach one new lessons about the real world and one's place in it. Having so discovered P.D. James' talent, I have commenced to read her work from start to finish.
Nothing betrays an author's intent and goals so much as the difference between the first novel and the latest novel. Some are trapped in themes and characters that never diverge from their initially successful iterations. Others reach a plateau; their masterpieces are regrettably followed by the mediocre results of the now-powerful author's ability to disregard the pleas of editors. Having recently read "A Certain Justice" I knew that I had to see where James began.
"Cover Her Face" is as British as anything I have read. A distrust of new ways, respect for tradition, a rewarding of virtues and punishment of vices. The mystery develops nicely with an immediate great house full of suspects. The characters are finely drawn, believable and the author has the confidence to leave the reader to follow the characters without providing every internal thought. To say more is to risk spoiling the mystery. Suffice it to say that this book lays a firm foundation for the good Inspector Dalgliesh and reaches a conclusion that as with all good mysteries does not betray itself untimely but which makes perfect sense in the end.
Tension at Table.......2006-02-10
The distinguished Adam Dalgliesh stories begin with Cover Her Face. Few will find this their favorite book in the series. I decided to read Cover Her Face again to provide perspective on P.D. James's latest, The Lighthouse. From that retrospective look, I came away even more impressed with The Lighthouse.
But I do recommend that you read Cover Her Face. Although it isn't going to be a favorite of yours, it will be good reading.
The book's main weakness is that the detailed development of the place and characters doesn't quite have rich enough material to work with.
The plot itself has some marvelous twists and turns that build around the character of a most unusual murder victim, Sally Jupp, a marginally acceptable servant in a wealthy home. The other interesting aspect of the story relates to several interesting variations on the locked room mystery subgenre.
In later stories in the series, Baroness James let her imagination run freer . . . with superb results.
Mystery for the Drawing Room.......2006-01-19
This was the first book I've read by P.D. James, and it reminded me of the great Agatha Christie mysteries I used to read melded with characters suited to Oscar Wilde or Noel Coward. She has a unique story telling technique that takes you into the hearts and minds of the suspects before revealing the killer in the final pages, but it's done with a razor sharp wit, and dry social commentary that had me laughing out loud at times.
Uncover this book!.......2005-05-02
This is P.D. James' first published book and our first introduction to Inspector Dalgleish. It is easy to see why this book was considered a bold entry into a tough field of really terrific British crime fiction. One of the hallmarks of the writing of P.D. James is her insistence on describing every scene in excruciating detail, but then again, those details enable her to build the story to a conclusion that surprises, but we should have seen all along. This is a fairly unusual story about the murder of an enigmatic housemaid and about the depths of people we assume we know ...and it plays out nicely. Although it was written in 1962, it has a definite timeless quality to it, like so many of the books by P.D. James and Ruth Rendell. For all of their detailed narrative, they never seem to mire you in a period of time unless it is intentional and noteworthy.

Pure Gin-ious.......2005-03-17
This is easily the best book of the series so far.
Chapter 1: Gin tries to teach a tomboy to attract Ko.
Chapter 2: Gin goes with Minako and Ko to a women-only public bath.
Chapters 3-5: Gin meets a white osprey, whose nest is threatened.
Chapter 6: Minako suffers heat exhaustion
Chapter 7: Mike tries to become a rebel.
Chapter 8: Minako gets to use a cellphone while at a beach.
Chapter 9: Gin deals with a bunch of perverts who work at a haunted house.
Chapter 10: Minako gets sunburned and the osprey returns.
The addition of Misako the osprey brings new life into the series, as Gin gets someone to counsel him about his state. The entire book is light fare, and I only regret that I can't rate this book a 6.

Book Description
Nigel Slater is one of the world's most accomplished food writers. Winner of six Glenfiddich Awards for his food writing and shortlisted for the prestigious Andre Simon prize for this book, he has had an enduring effect on cooking and helped bring to prominence a new generation of British chefs, including the Naked Chef, Jamie Oliver, and Nigella Lawson. His down-to-earth style and infectious enthusiasm has won him a loyal following both here and in the UK, where has been a number one bestseller.
Imagine shredded basil leaves stirred into buttery mashed potatoes and a slice of pork pan-fried with fennel, followed by a juicy sliced white peach dropped into chilled white wine. That's Nigel Slater's fast food! Real Fast Food is an inspirational collection of 350 enticing recipes with simple techniques and assertive flavors that can be completed in less than thirty minutes. It's the ultimate modern-day cookbook, filled with recipes for everyone who enjoys good, unpretentious food.
Customer Reviews:
England.......2007-05-07
Love this book and this author. Fresh and different from the American market, which at times seems to be forced fed to all of us.
It's become my fish Bible........2007-03-07
I keep the fish chapter bookmarked ever since I tried my first recipe (Pan fried salmon with capers and vinegar) and have since been using this exclusively for weeknight dinner fish dishes. I haven't ventured outside this chapter (intend to) but the simple yet delicious and company-worthy recipes I've worked into my rotation are worth the purchase. The title could be Fast and Simple Yet Pretty Impressive Dishes. As we speak, "Broiled Spiced Fish Steaks" are in the oven.
Practical but attractive recipes for busy people.......2007-01-15
Nigel Slater is an imaginative cook and both his books of 30 minute recipes are unusual and very practical. His "30 minute recipes' is even better but both are great for the cook returning home after 7pm!
Gourmet food from a small boat galley.......2006-03-20
I am not a great cook - I have a gourmet quality wife who loves to cook for relaxation - but for 8 months we were long-distance commuters. I lived on a very small houseboat - meaning everything had to be carried in, water was at a premium, and there was a limit to the amount of electric stuff I could use at the same time. With a 2-burner hot plate and a copy of Real Fast Food as my primary reference, I was able to cook a fair number of the recipes to produce a most impressive meal with minimal trouble.
It is by no means a health-food diet - if you don't like butter and olive oil, this book is not for you. But if you like to make a good showing from time to time with food that tastes great and is not that expensive to prepare - reach for this book first.
Even Better than Rachael. Buy it Twice!!.......2006-02-07
`real fast food' is one of the English culinary writer, Nigel Slater's latest books, which in many ways is much more friendly to American audiences than many of his earlier cookbooks, right down to the silly conceit of putting his title in all lower case instead of the way we were taught in fourth grade to capitalize titles of things!
Two of the more obvious Americanizations are the presence of his nibs' Jamie Oliver's blurb on the cover that `Nigel is a genius' and the subtitle saying that the book contains `350 recipes ready to eat in 30 minutes'. This puts the book in almost direct competition to Rachael Ray's latest offering, `365:No Repeats' which actually was published after Slater's volume, so one may say that Rachael is cribbing from the Brits this time. One less obvious but very gratifying change is the fact that all of Slater's recipes in this book are done using Imperial measurements rather than metric measurements. That is, everything is in spoons, cups, ounces, and pounds rather than in grams, kilograms, and milliliters.
The very best thing about this book is that the qualities which made his earlier books so good, it was worth puzzling through all the metric units are still here in this `mass market' issue. Slater starts out on the right foot with me early in his introduction on ingredients when he gives me a corollary to Marold's Law of Fast Cooking in that he strongly recommends using fresh herbs for all `fast food' cooking because it takes too long for the virtues of dried herbs such as thyme to develop in quick cooking dishes. And, fresh herbs are invariably more expensive than dried herbs.
I should warn you that this book does have more than a few dishes that should more properly be considered `simple' or `easy' rather than fast. This should not be surprising, as `simple' cooking has been Slater's ideal from his earliest books.
I confess to be pretty fond of Rachael Ray's approach to fast cooking in that she always genuinely aims for being done within 30 minutes, she uses very few prepared ingredients and she uses lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I believe Slater does Rachael one better by bringing his deep love and knowledge of his ingredients to us to understand and use, instead of following Miss Rachael's scripts without learning much beyond the particular recipe.
Rather than organize his recipes around courses or types of dishes, Slater promotes our understanding by organizing his book by ingredient and within ingredient, by method. For instance, like all great food writers, he has lots to say about what you can do with eggs. One of the most delightful things I found in this book is his take on making scrambled eggs, on which he devotes much more love and attention than he does to that most finicky dish, the omelet. This may be do to his French influence, as I almost fell out of my chair when I read Slater saying that the French always seem to manage to find a simple approach to food.
Since most of us see the Italians, or at least their British disciples such as Jamie Oliver, Rose Gray, and Ruth Rogers, as the great recipe simplifiers, it's unusual for those of us brought up on `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' to see French techniques as simple, but dust off your Elizabeth David and Richard Olney and you will find French simplicity aplenty.
Slater is one of those rare food writers who actually admits to not liking a particular kind of raw ingredient. In his case, it is the Brussels Sprout! I find this odd, because I was always especially fond of Brussels Sprouts, even as a child, and even in preference to some of its cabbage family relatives. It is simply beyond me how someone can rhapsodize about artichokes, and not like Brussels Sprouts. Well, Slater actually doesn't rhapsodize about artichokes, and in this book he actually gives us the best times and methods for dealing with the little sprouts, so I forgive him.
I don't believe Slater is a genius. I just believe that where Jamie Oliver is ebullient and something of a force of nature, Slater is articulate and insightful about what works in cooking and what goes together with what.
You should be warned that Slater trades good tasting food done simply with a fair number of concerns about the heavy use of both saturated fats and carbohydrates. The man simply loves bacon, butter, heavy cream, potatoes, and beans! And why not. A little bacon or anchovies, cream and parsley would make shoe leather taste good.
The bottom line is that you will learn a lot more about cooking technique and ingredients from Slater, even in this `quick cooking' book than you will from just about any other cookbook writer, including both Rachael Ray and Jamie Oliver. If you are already a Slater fan, this book offers a great reference to quick meals which follow his principles, when you don't have time to mine his deeper books, especially his most interesting and important book, `Appetite'. If you are unfamiliar with Slater, but you like good cooking, you can get no better introduction to his eloquence than in this volume.
Very highly recommended.

Mridula Baljekar, the rising star of Indian cooking, presents 150 flavorful recipes that will take you from kitchen to table in no time at all.
Customer Reviews:
Real Fast Indian Food by Mridula Baljekar.......2003-11-20
This book is an excellent reference for formal Indian cooking.
It describes classic meals; for instance, Paneer Kabobs with dried prunes, Madras Fish Curry, Kaftas in Lentil Soup and
hundreds of other fine foods/recipes. This book would be
helpful if you were cooking for an Indian guest or family.
It would be useful for chefs and persons desiring to emulate
an international flavor in the recipes presented to guests.
Some new combinations and flavors.......2003-06-26
Positives: The recipes are very descriptively named, so one can
really get seduced into trying out a recipe! No extra-long list of ingredients.
She introduces common ingredients found in the american markets, that are not usually used in Indian cooking to create some interesting combinations.Ex: Brocolli and Red pepper raita,
Tuna burgers,Dill rice , Salmon in creamy sauce etc.
There is a section for microwave cooking.Lots of salads and veggie dishes that are totally new to indian food lovers are in here..
Drawback: Absolutely no pictures..so first time cooks and new Indian cooks, might not be happy.
It isn't fast cooking..but its cooking that's well worth the time. Preparing curry sauces beforehand is what makes her concept of cooking "fast" work.
However, I like to create a smaller version of her sauces and use it immediately. The madras curry sauce is great..makes your food look and taste like those served at the Indian restaurants..

Book Description
Day by day, a silent poison is killing Americans. It is estimated that 64 percent of Americans are overweight or obese, resulting in the premature deaths of 500,000 people a year. That's more US deaths-every year-than were suffered during all of WWII. This poison is right under your nose, front and center at virtually every meal. Yet despite hundreds of diet books, thousands of seminars, and countless hours of research, it has escaped discovery. That's because, says chemical engineer AJ Djo, experts have been looking in all the wrong places.
Five years of intensive research into the eating habits of more than 100,000 subjects has unveiled the missing link between dieting and obesity. For the 100 million-plus Americans who try diet after diet-with rare success-this scientific breakthrough represents a solution that is not only logical and achievable but also sustainable for a lifetime.
For the first time, here is a diet that incorporates all of the recommendations of leading nutritionists, dieticians, and governmental agencies . . . without the poisons. It took a man with AJ's unique multicultural background, scientific training, and spiritual depth to continue the long discovery process and put all the pieces together.
The Hot Diet offers a solution to the weight-gain problems of millions of people who have tried the so-called popular diets, who live in a world of "Fat Clothes" and "Skinny Clothes," and who find that decade after decade, they continue to add a few pounds of unwanted weight every year.
The Hot Diet is for the person who recognizes that there is more to life than food!
Customer Reviews:
Recycled Advice With One New Twist.......2007-08-07
The author's suggestions are all the things you've heard before to help you lose weight with one exception. That except is to avoid ice in your diet and drinks. Coincidentally there are other authors that claim the exact opposite of this, i.e. that the body burns more calories because it has to warm the ice and cold drinks so you actually get a slight boost in weight loss from the metabolic effect of the ice.
There's nothing exceptionally hot or all that interesting about this so called Hot Diet.
A real upper!.......2007-08-06
This book is so inspiring; it has personality. Wheather or not you wish to loose weight, the book is so uplifting and fun to read that I highly recommend it for the simple joy of how it refocuses us on the real pleasures of life. How nice that it addresses the issue of physical health as well.
Enjoy!
Attention College Students!!!.......2007-08-05
I just finished the 'Hot Diet' and want to recommend it to all. It has really given me a wake up call, in a world gone mad, as far as diet fads. Boy, the lengths we will go! Smoking, diet pills or ??
Great book for summer and easy read.
Diet and spirituality.......2007-07-31
What a nice practical theory-chemical reaction applied to real life.
I especially enjoyed the part of the book when spirituality comes into play-that sets it apart from other diet books. I truly enjoyed reading the hot diet book- gives you a sense of serenity and peace. It enlightens the reader about being appreciative and observant!
I recommend it to all my patients, coworkers, family and friends.
Great work A.J.
Thought provoking with positive outcome........2007-07-30
I highly recommend the book. For one think, try drinking soda without ice, you will not. That alone is worth the cover price and then some. Very innovative concept and very different from all other diet books. Hot Diet suggestions and recommendations do not have a down side. Innovation does not necessarliy follow great deal of scientific research by large corporations every time. There are the Eureka moments and discoveries large and small we need to share with others. I thank the author AJ for sharing and congratulate him in fighting back cancer. I hope AJ will continue to share and promote his concepts. God Bless You.
