Book Description

What's the perfect read for fans of New York Times bestselling mystery authors Lilian Jackson Braun and Rita Mae Brown? This delightful ninth Joe Grey Mystery from award–winning author Shirley Rousseau Murphy.

When antiques and valuables begin to disappear from residents' homes, Joe Grey, Feline Detective, knows that something is very wrong in sleepy Molena Point, California. Lost are a five hundred thousand dollar painting, a diamond choker, and most shocking to Joe, his owner Clyde's vintage Packard roadster. But even a seasoned tomcat like Joe isn't prepared for the return of a yellow–eyed, sinister black cat who had terrorized him and his girlfriend Dulcie years before. The acid–tongued Azrael had paired with an old crook to loot the town and spread fear among the unsuspecting residents. Could Azrael and his partner be connected to this new set of crimes? But when a local waiter dies mysteriously at the art opening of one of Joe and Dulcie's closest human friends, the pair know that someone much more powerful and evil than Azrael's aging human friend is involved. And when miles away in San Francisco the cats' friend Kate––a woman with a mysterious, troubling secret––is followed by a stranger and robbed, the cats dig in their claws and investigate. Along with their tattercoat friend Kit, they pass clues to the police, and under the often sceptical eye of Clyde, slowly begin to sniff out the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Love these cats!.......2007-10-02

I have read every one of Shirley R Murphy's books. I can't say that about any other author, although I'm working on Agatha Christie ;-) These books raised my spirits while having a depressing stay in a nursing home after a rather bad hip problem. Shirley has a great imagination! If you are tired of the "Cat Who" books, give Shirley a try. Better if read in order, but not necessary.

5 out of 5 stars An old enemy returns, a young friend needs help.......2006-03-22

When a fully restored antique Packard roadster disappears from Clyde Damen's locked auto shop--the latest in a series of baffling burglaries plaguing the little coastal town of Molena Point--Clyde does the sensible thing: he gets his cat. Joe Grey, the stub-tailed tomcat, is an experienced detective who can speak and read English and reason with the best of them. But even Joe doesn't realize the truth until, walking the roofs in the wee hours of the morning, he picks up a familiar and hated smell. It soon turns out that Azrael, the sinister tomcat who shares the gift of sentience with Joe and his friends Dulcie and Kit, is back in town and up to his usual tricks. But there's more to the situation than meets the eye--even feline eyes that can see in the dark. Why is someone so interested in acquiring the antique jewelry inherited by shapeshifter Kate Osborne? Is Azrael connected? And what's to be done about young Dillon Thurwell, who at 14 has fallen in with a bad set and taken to shoplifting? Meanwhile, little Kit detects a gas leak in a neighborhood cottage--and there's a dead man inside. And a young and apparently healthy waiter suddenly drops dead in a village cafe. Facing off repeatedly against their old foe, Joe and his friends struggle to find the solutions to these mysteries (which, as always in Murphy's complex and skillfully plotted tales, turn out to be connected), and along the way begin to get some hints about their own powers. Joe may not fear evil, but evil definitely lurks in this fascinating entry to the series.

4 out of 5 stars Was okay, but not the best.......2006-03-14

I am an avid reader of cat mysteries. If there is a cat even remotely involved in the plot line, I've read it. I have all of Murphy's Joe Grey series, but I always wait for the paperbacks. She is a talented writer and has created some likeable characters, but this one was not my favorite. I do like the fact that Dulice is an avid bibliophile and Joe Grey's snide sense of humor. The human characters in the book are wonderful as well. She really has created a wonderful setting and the kind of comraderie that other books set in small towns are losing. Murphy's characters do not lose quality as the series goes on, but this book seemed to be struggling for a plot line. I guessed the whodunit, and I was able to put the book down for awhile, which to me does not reflect a book getting five stars. I highly recommend reading all of Murphy's series, but not at hard back prices.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of her best.......2006-02-01

____________________________________________
This "Joe Grey" fantasy cat-detective novel is readable, but weak and implausible. As in many long-running series, my willing suspension of disbelief suffers from the sheer quantity of mayhem that happens to Our Heroes and their pals. Murphy needs a fresh start with a new series, I'd guess. Note that the first 4 or 5 Joe Greys are delightful. Just don't start here!

Happy reading--

Book Description

From Shirley Rousseau Murphy, six-time winner of the Cat Writers' Association Muse Medallion, here is crime-solving from the paws of the most cunning and intelligent feline detectives around: tomcat and feline sleuth extraordinaire Joe Grey, his tabby pal Dulcie, and their tattercoat friend Kit.

When antiques and valuables begin to disappear from residents' homes, Joe Grey knows that something is very wrong in sleepy Molena Point, California. Could the thief be a local or, even worse, is it the old crook who may be connected to Azrael, the sinister, yellow-eyed cat who terrorized Joe and Dulcie years ago, and whose return has Joe's fur standing on edge? Even a seasoned tomcat like Joe isn't prepared for the shock that awaits Molena Point residents at the opening for artist Charlie Harper.

While guests are dining on hors d'oeuvres and fine wine at the joyous celebration, a young, healthy waiter drops dead at Charlie's feet.

Meanwhile, just north of Molena Point, in San Francisco, the cats' friend Kate, a woman with a troubling secret, is followed by a stranger and robbed. Her apartment is then gutted, with claw marks and black cat hairs leading her to suspect the vicious tomcat Azrael. In the most dramatic investigation of their lives, Joe Grey, Dulcie, and Kit, following diverse leads, scratch out the truth and, with cunning feline skills, restore a distraught village to its usual cozy tranquility.

5 out of 5 stars A most unusual cat.......2006-03-20

How often do you get to travel and live inside the mind of a cat? In this story you do; you are there as he escapes danger, helps his friends and solves the crime. All the Joe Grey mysteries are fun reads.

4 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST, STILL FUN.......2004-06-23

I'm sure when a writer dives into a series of novels, it's bound to get a little stale. Shirley Rousseau Murphy's Joe Gray/Dulcie series has so far been a very enjoyable series, with her feline hero/heroines (Kit's the other female)a delight to spend time with. CAT FEAR NO EVIL, while sure to please Ms. Murphy's fans, is a little stale. Murphy spends a lot of time commiserating over some of her character's dilemmas redundantly and uncolorfully. This is true in the case of both Kate and Dillon. There also isn't as much of Dulcie and Kit in this one; seems Murphy is spending a little more time on her humans in this one, and while Kate Osborne was initially fascinating, in this book she comes across pathetically inept both emotionally and physically. Azriel, the black cat, also chews up too much of the scenery. There's some far fetched plotting in this one, and resolutions come a little too easily.
But, the series isn't dead; Ms. Murphy needs to reassess why her readers have followed her---the three cats should be the focal point of the books, and let other fiction writers focus on the humans!!!

3 out of 5 stars Weakest "Joe Grey" yet. A "C" book........2004-04-25

5 out of 5 stars Go Joe Grey.......2004-03-23

The evil one is back in this riviting book. I was disappointed the Kate did not have her "skills" among her this time. But a very satisfying read! i have all her books and re-read often.
I highly recommend The Catswold Portal if you can get a copy. It is a out of print book.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Cat Mystery.......2004-03-03

When jewelry and antiques begin disappearing from the homes of Molena Point, California residents, and then a waiter dies at the feet of renowned artist, Charlie Harper, during the opening of her new solo art show, feline detectives Joe Grey and Dulcie know that there is something seriously wrong taking place in the sleepy town. Then, just a few miles north in the city of San Francisco, Joe Grey and Dulcie's human friend, Kate, a clever woman concealing a troubling secret, is not only followed and robbed, but also has her apartment invaded by a rogue, yet very tough tomcat named Azrael. Now, with the help of Joe's owner, Clyde Damen, Joe Grey and his partner in crime (or solving crime), Dulcie will begin clawing out the truth to uncover this frightening new mystery.

This was the first book that I have read by Shirley Rousseau Murphy, and I am quite pleased with the outcome. Joe Grey is a witty character, who's personality can change from funny to serious in the matter of seconds. Dulcie is adorable, even though she is a bit hard-headed. And Clyde is a fun character whom is lead around by the nose by two mischevious cats. Overall this was a fabulous mystery that will capture the hearts of all fans of a good animal-narrated story. Fans of Lillian Jackson Braun and Rita Mae Brown will relish in the likeness of Shirley Rousseau Murphy's plot and characters. A must read.

Is our baby eating enough? Is this much crying normal? How do I know when she is really sick? This hefty, 671-page guide to your baby's first year is brought to you by the creators of the bestselling What to Expect When You're Expecting. The three authors, all mothers themselves, are calm, clear, and encouraging as they tackle the first year of child-rearing, month by month. The easy-to-absorb, chronological format includes sections such as "What Your Baby May Be Doing," "What You Can Expect at This Month's Checkups," "Feeding Your Baby This Month," "What You May Be Concerned About," and "What It's Important to Know."

Part Two addresses special concerns such as illness, first aid do's and don'ts, the low-birthweight baby, the adopted baby, becoming a father, and sibling relationships. You'll also find discussions of breastfeeding and bottlefeeding, selecting a physician for the baby, diapers and clothing, safety, and many ways of stimulating the baby's development. The recipes for babies and toddlers in Part Three are useful, as are the recommended home remedies; charts on common childhood illnesses; height and weight; and the thorough index. (A particular strength of the book is the authors' careful attention to diet and nutrition for both mother and baby, incorporating the American Academy of Pediatrics' latest recommendations on infant nutrition.) While some of the authors' perspectives are controversial (such as whether to let your baby "cry it out" or not), this book remains one of the most comprehensive resources for new parents as they toddle through their baby's first year.

            Book Description

America's bestselling guide to caring for a baby is now better than ever: announcing a two-years-in-the-making, cover-to-cover, line-by-line revision and update of the 6.9-million-copy What to Expect the First Year, the bible for taking care of a newborn through the milestone of his or her first birthday

The Second Edition incorporates the most recent developments in pediatric medicine. Every question and answer have been revisited, and in response to letters from readers, dozens of new Q&As have been added. The book is more reader-friendly than ever, with updated cultural references, and the new material brings more in-depth coverage to issues such as newborn screening, home births and the resulting at-home newborn care, vitamins and vaccines, milk allergies, causes of colic, sleep problems, SIDS, returning to work, dealing with siblings, weaning, sippy cups, the expanded role of the father, and much more. An updated cover and all-new black-and-white line illustrations complement the fresher book with a fresher look.

4 out of 5 stars MUCH better than the pregnancy version.......2007-10-01

I hated what to expect when you're expecting. I found it totally paranoid and annoying. This book, however, was very useful. I enjoyed the monthly breakdown of developmental skills and issues that might come up. It's in a question/answer format, which is easy to read on only a few hours sleep.

My daughter & son-in-law were delighted to receive this book and find it to be informative, helpful and easy to read.

            4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-09-27

I felt this book was very helpful as a first time mother. Many things that you'll question can be found in this book, and more.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this series.......2007-09-20

An absolute must for the intelligent parent. This series is not for the paranoid (it will only make you more obsessed about where your child "ranks" amongst otherchildren. This great easy to read book series (what to expect when you are expecting,... the first year... the toddler years) does just what it says it does. It gave us a guide to lessen the shocks and surprises that my daughter kept in store for us. It also helps me to gauge if any social or developmental abnormalities are occuring so that I can seek help if neccesary. Because of this series (in good part) When my daughter had her first peanut reaction on her 1st birthday I knew what was possible, watched, caught it, and got her medical attention immediately. I now carry a life saving Epi-pen. If you are now paranoid , don't get the books. If you can be rational and want to be aware, then run to get it, love it.

            5 out of 5 stars Hand Tool.......2007-09-08

Its a useful book for any new parents. It begins by explaining what essentials to purchase for your new born, breast feeding vs. bottle feeding, post parteum then it goes into depth for the first year fo your baby's development. It will be my guide through the first year of my child's life for sure.

This book has been so helpful in the holiday seasons. I have been able to find recipes for all to enjoy. Some may be put off my the name of the book, but it's what drew me in. Magic is in everything we do every day.

4 out of 5 stars Good recipes but very unsure about the research.......2007-01-21

The recipes in this book are great HOWEVER as for the correspondence Appendix's in the back I'm finding lots of errors. I'm not Wiccan so I only work with Germanic deities and Patricia obviously knows less on deities from this area.

            Appendix A errors
Balder is not a Hearth Deity, Frigg/Frige is the goddess of home & hearth and she is only mentioned with the byname of Berchta.

            Appendix B errors
1 Not only does she only list foods that corresponde with only 4 actual German/Scandinavian deities leaving out a whole bunch, Audhumla & Gunnlod aren't even deities, one is a sacred cow & the other a giantess.
2 She left out the obvious Idunn/Idunna to correspond with apples.
3 Mead also mostly associates with Odin who won the mead from Gunnlod or Njord who brews the mead for the gods.

Holidays on page 8 - Feast of St Charlemagnes Breakfast
Another biggie is if you follow the Germanic deities you are an Asatruar and no Asatruar is ever going to hold anything to honor Charlemagne for any reason unless it's to curse his name. He was detrimental to our Heathen ancestors, the only good thing he ever did was start the medieval university.

I know this author is Wiccan but Wiccans are not the only ones who may want a kitchen witch cookbook. Quality research is worth a lot so I'd check other sources and compare when it comes to these correspondences she has listed.

Enjoy the recipes tho and don't pay full prices for this book, I got mine thru the marketplace for half the listed price and am glad I did.

            5 out of 5 stars Kitchen Witch's Cookbook.......2006-01-20

My wife love it, everything on the book is full of new knowledge to her.

2 out of 5 stars Food good, magic not so good........2004-03-09

            Geez, what a mess.

Ms. Telesco is capable of writing a passable recipe, provided that the cook is capable of making judgement calls about cooking time, spicing, and other details she occasionally omits. There's a nice variety of flavors in this cookbook. As a book of recipes it is serviceable, if not stellar.

However, if you're hoping for a reference to aid you in actual magical cooking LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE. I'm quite sure the author meant well but the magic in this book is a train wreck. Rather than provide a handy list of ingredients and their magical affinities, Ms. Telesco provides the recipe and blithely decides what the combination is supposed to do. In the paragraph of banter accompanying each recipe, if one is lucky she'll mention one or two of the ingredients and divulge what she's using them for in that recipe, but have a care--the sympathies of a single ingredient seem to vary widely from recipe to recipe. And again, one is basically left to rely on her interpretation.

She also tosses in some ill-explained numerology (five is apparently the number for vision, but according to who? And what are the other numbers supposed to mean?). Related holidays and god/desses are also listed with the recipes. This was a nice touch, but it seems like Ms. Telesco has made the mistake of seeing 'witch' as a synonym for anything non-Christian. A dizzying index of holidays is in the back, including Buddhist, Shinto, African, and a few Mexican Catholic that apparently made the cut because they were fun. Witching has enough of its own holidays--cribbing them willy-nilly from other faiths seemed just a little cheap and tacky to me.

In short, I suspect Ms. Telesco of making up the magic bits as she went along. But some of the food she makes is tasty. Buy this one used.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing and delicious recipes..........2003-07-08

...both modern and historic, and from nearly every region in the world. The various recipes included in the book are, with a few exceptions, rare and creative. So far, most of the recipes I've tried have been great successes, with the rest becoming very palatable with the addition of simple ingredients like salt, pepper and/or lemon juice. The best part was that most recipes were easy to follow, though heavy on spices both rare and common, even for a beginner like myself. I recommend the Rosemary Sorbet, the simple apple pie and "Marian's Stuffed Salmon."

Since I'm not a culinary historian, I cannot comment on the authenticity of some of the "historic" recipes (including the aforementioned sorbet allegedly from 16th century England). Nonetheless, they all taste wonderful and makie interesting additions to the common repertoire.

The only problem I found was that the author seemed undecided whether her audience were experienced cooks or green beginners and was inconsistent on the specificity of her directions in her recipes (e.g. cooking times, salt & pepper spicing, etc.)

This is a wonderful book - packed with spells and potions for every situation, and the first book I've seen devoted to using a cauldron. Whatever you may need to do, be it blessing, healing, protecting, or banishing, you can find a spell in here. Spiritual bath recipes are included. There is even the occasional soup recipe! This is a must-have reference book for every kitchen witch's library! I'm looking forward to more works from this author.
