Decent Enough.......2007-03-29
It's hard to sympathize too much with a main character who not only is "pretty verging on stunning," but who has her own business, great friends, and a cute dog, to boot. The only flies in Carmela's ointment seem to be the dead bodies that constantly crop (no pun intended) up. The old "bad twin" card was played here, as was the wandering-around-the-graveyard-in-the-dark trick. A little too predictable, a little too light on realistic character development, and a little too cutesy. And would someone please get this woman an editor? "Courier" and Ives is just an embarrassment, as is the misspelling of "zydeco" in a book based in N'Awlins. Don't forget "commaraderie" (is that being on good terms with your punctuation?) and "mother load" (a truckful of maternal-types?).
All the same, Laura Childs can write -- no doubt about that. I think she just needs to take a little more time plotting and writing to take this series to the next level.
New Orleans at its best.......2007-01-07
It was fun to read about pre-Katrina New Orleans. I kept thinking about what has happened to the city since Katrina. The bookstore references were great and the scrapbook store was fun. I did look up the boxes they mentioned making on the internet. The book was easy to read and a quick read. without giving away the murder, the murderer could have been more character based.
Disappointing third book.......2006-07-22
This third book in Childs' scrapbooking mystery series was a real disappointment to me. The dialogue was totally sappy, whereas in the previous novels in this series, the characters spoke in a realistic manner. Here, they seemed almost flawless, and more than a little saccharine.
The mystery was pretty easy to figure out and the storyline seemed thin. Aside from Carmela's friendship with Ava, this book did almost nothing to develop the relationships Carmela has with the other characters. The ending (of the book, not the resolution of the mystery) came completely out of left field given the extremely minor interaction between Carmela and another character. I'll hang in there for her next book in this series, but this one really let me down.
The Disappearing Groom.......2005-10-24
Carmela Bertrand is helping her friend Wren with her pre-wedding party when she discovers that the groom has been murdered. The victim was the owner of a bookstore and he was also developing a valuable computer program. One man tries to pressure Wren into selling the bookstore and another one tries to take over the rights to the computer program. Carmela wonders if either man had enough of a motive for murder. Interwoven with the mystery is the tiresome story of Carmela's off-again, on-again romance with her neer-do-well, estranged husband, Shamus. There are some loose ends in the story and Carmela takes some ridiculous chances such as entering a cemetery along at night, although she admits she knows better. The best parts are about New Orleans, scrapbooking, and some of Carmela's interactions with her friends.
Another Disappointing Entry in the Series.......2005-03-18
While Laura Childs has a good sense of locale, her characters are shallow and her mysteries transparent. This is the second Scrapbooking mystery I've read, and I'm not sure I'll bother with another. Her writing style is ineffectual, her dialog sounds as if her characters are uneducated, and her grammar is appalling. Okay, perhaps I'm being too critical of these paperback originals, but the books show no tendency toward improvement. On the plus side, however, I have to give credit to anyone with the determination to get herself published. I only wish Ms. Childs would invest in a grammar course and buy herself a good dictionary.

no information in book.......2004-06-06
This book has very little information in it. It doesn't tell the reader anything. At least it does have pictures.
Bound to be interesting.......2002-05-20
Author Flowers know where of she speaks--the mind of the serial killer. I have admired her other true crime sagas but I think this is her best. Definitely required reading for anyone who wants to understand the tortured pysche of those predators among us or, sadly, to truly understand American society at the close of the last and the beginning of the new century.
The Worst.......2000-06-03
This book was disjointed, unorganized, and boring. I felt as though I were reading the notes an author makes before writing a book rather than the book itself.
Detailed information on crime prevention for women.......1999-10-11
When my club read this book, we realized that it was a guide in forensic detection with a detailed police procedure. A heavy subject, but it was presented in a very readable manner. Our daughers certainly benefited in knowing how Bobby Joe Long lured his victims. We thought it was an excellent true crime offering.
Awful.......1999-05-25
It's not only exploitative but first of all BORING and very badly written. Even a TV news coverage of Long's story is better.

Applied Topic.......2000-09-07
Agatha Christie is considered one of the greatest mystery writers of all time. She has written countless mystery novels, as well as an autobiography. The novel, And Then There Were None, is considered to be one of her best works. She tells the story of ten people, brought to the mysterious Indian Island, who are accused of murder by a Mr. and Mrs. Owens. One by one, each person dies, according to an old nursery rhyme. Each person did commit one or more murders, and they suffer from the insanity of knowing that what they did cannot be changed. Agatha Christie wrote this story to give the reader an understanding of human nature. She went into the mind of a killer and explained how he/she thought and acted. The manner in which she writes helps us identify with the characters and learn what drives each to insanity and finally kills each of them. The killers are tormented by their pasts mistakes, and one way or another, they would have died. Either by killing themselves or being killed by another member of the ten. Ms. Christie used the poem, Ten Little Indians, to identify each character with his or her death. Each character was an Indian. In the story, she wrote the Indians as being selfish and devious. Looking out for themselves. Because of that, each Indian was punished, by death. The Indians were tormented, not knowing which one of them was next to die. No matter what precautions they took, someone had to die next, until one was left to hang herself. The main idea of the story is that one must realize that appearances can be deceiving. All the Indians on the island appeared to be fine people. But underneath all the glamour, was a hidden side of them. For example, Vera Claythorne, the beautiful woman, whom no one thought was capable of murder, was. She had worked as a governess, in charge of Cyril Hamilton. But while she was supposed to be watching Cyril, her lover came, and by being careless of her charge, she caused the death of the child. Cyril drowned in the sea. No matter how she tried to ignore the fact that she had killed him, it was her fault the child died. And on the island, she would also kill Philip Lombard, as well as finally killing herself. Miss Claythorne finally went insane with the thoughts of Cyril's death, and after killing Philip, she went upstairs and hung herself from a hook on the ceiling. Today, people cannot trust everyone they meet. Just because someone may have fancy clothes, good looks, and fine speech, doesn't mean they are what you see. For, underneath all that could be a person with a horrible past. For example, with the technology we have in today's society, most people own a computer or have access to one. And most computers have the Internet. Online, you can do a great many things. Look up information, play games, and send letters (e-mail). You can also chat to people too. Sometimes, you can chat with your friends, by knowing their screen names. But in other cases, you might chat with a stranger. Someone could say they are sixteen, when they might be thirty-three. And someone can also say they are from Nevada, when they actually live in Vermont. And if you don't know these things, you might believe them, and trust that they are telling you the truth. Now, not everyone is lying like this, but people do that to gain your trust. And if you give out certain information, you can be in a dangerous situation. For this thirty-three year old person from Vermont might decide to pay you an unwelcome visit. This shows you how dangerous people can be. To conclude, And Then There Were None is a fine novel and takes you inside the criminal mind. It sheds a whole new light on mystery and crimes. It was a wonderful mystery and Agatha Christie truly is one of the best mystery writers. Her works show such preparation and thought that only someone with true talent can transfer these thoughts onto paper. And for a woman in her time period to accomplish such is an amazing feat. She sets an example for writers to come.

unique twist makes for memorable adventure.......2005-12-30
I read/played through this adventure probably about 15 years ago and still remember it vividly. It is a well written, challenging and original representative of its genre. A great deal of the originality comes from the players inability to control the bestial savagery of the "creature of havoc" the story is based around. This deepens the players immersion and helps overcome some of the limitations inherent in "pick-a-path" books.
Not for newcomers.......2004-09-04
Creature of Havoc has a well-earned reputation as one of the best and toughest gamebooks. It's longer than most Fighting Fantasy books; there's a small degree of filler between set pieces, with many dead ends and red herrings. Meticulous note-taking is a must -- as is a fair dose of luck.
The detailed backstory is integrated beautifully into the main story. You play a monster trying to master its instincts and gain understanding of its nature and control of its fate. This is more than just a gimmick; it sets the scene for a masterful adventure and memorable climax.
Newcomers to Fighting Fantasy will find a more forgiving intro elsewhere -- I recommend City of Thieves, Citadel of Chaos or Steve Jackson's Sorcery! series. Aficionados who haven't yet played this one are in for a treat.
One of the best fighting fantasy books.......2002-11-01
Creature of Havoc has been on the top of many fighting fantasy lists, and is well deserving of this recognition. However, this is also one of the most difficult fighting fantasy books and beginners to the series may be frustrated. Nonetheless, this book has a very intricate storyline which is set up by many pages of background material. Even with the background material, you start off as a creature unknowing of the world, and begin a quest for identity. There are a diverse number of environments that you will traverse. This updated book does correct a glaring error in the previous edition which made the book extremely difficult to solve. Also, the production value of this book is top notch, from the wonderful cover to the quality of the paper. A must for any fighting fantasy or gamebook fan.

1-2-3 Magic opened my eyes.......2007-10-11
This is a great book. Once you understand how your darlings manulipate you they are so much easier to deal with. Our children are doing what they are supposed to do, now armed with this knowledge I can understand them better and am a better parent for it.
A unique look at child discipline.......2007-10-03
The Bible tells us to "Train up a child in the way he should go..." but many of us are at a loss as to how we should do it. We know that "Folly is bound up in the heart of a child," but we often wonder if it is so tightly bound, that we'll never see its removal. The Bible is full of wonderful godly parenting wisdom, but sometimes a practical how-to that uses this wisdom would be a God-send. Enter 1-2-3 Magic (and for sanity's sake, let's forget that we are using the word "magic" in conjunction with Biblical parenting--they are being figurative).
1-2-3 Magic for Christian Parents works in three straightforward steps: 1) Controlling obnoxious behavior. 2) Encouraging good behavior. 3) Strengthening your relationship. But how do you do this? By using the count method to control "stop" behaviors (Stop whining!), and strategies for encouraging good, or "start," behavior (Start cleaning up!) you will get your child to a point where you enjoy spending time with them, thus build the relationship.
I would say the power of this book is in controlling the stop behaviors. What do you do about whining? In and of itself, it isn't really a punishable offense. You can tell a child to stop whining until you are blue in the face but they keep at it. Shoot, it works! But with the count method (used correctly), you can put a damper on it pretty quickly. My kids latched right on to the count for those stop behaviors. Also, there is a great abundance of applicable scripture that you may want to copy down and quote to your kids daily (or to yourself!).
As in most parenting books, there are about three chapters that tell you why the system will work before they describe the method, and there are points I disagree with, but overall 1-2-3 Magic seems to work.
Armchair Interviews says: A new way to raise better children.
Wonderful.......2007-10-02
This was a wonderful book. The advice was so helpful and it worked for me.
This is the best book I ever bought.......2007-09-14
After I read 123 Magic, I started using it on my kids. After using it a few times, their behavior changed for the good. Now our time together is fun and enjoyable because there is no yelling. This is the best book I have ever bought.
instantly made a difference in our house.......2007-09-01
I was skeptical when I read the review of this book- that the techniques would actually work but I bought it, read just half and applied what I read to the behavior of my unruly 2.5 year old boy and my 5 year old girl and the difference in one day was very noticeable. The 2.5 year old didn't catch on as quick- we did several time outs for the same thing over and over but he did understand that when I started counting 1 - 2, I meant business. And, when I gave my daughter a time out in the car by pulling the car to the side of the road and not moving the car for 5 minutes she really got the idea. In two days of using this method, now I just get to 1 with her for most things and she stops what she is doing. We did have to do time outs for her in the bathroom not her bedroom as suggested. Still having some minor issues b/c both children open their doors after being put in their rooms for time out but definitely a change in their behavior and mine using this method!! I would highly recommend this book- it is not rocket science, it's not revolutionary, but it does work.

Pickling food seems like a form of culinary alchemy to most of us. Or we recall it as something grandmothers used to do, laboring over heaps of vegetables and huge, steaming kettles to turn out jars of jewel-like pickles and piquant chutneys.
In the first chapter of The Joy of Pickling, Linda Ziedrich demystifies the pickling process. She explains the difference between fresh pickles made with vinegar and longer-keeping, salt-preserved, fermented pickles. Her detailed explanation of canning methods, including low-temperature pasteurization, shows how to avoid risky problems.
After reading the opening of this pickle primer, go straight to the "Quick" and "Freezer Pickle" chapters and discover how easy it is to make Green Olives with Lemon and Thyme and Freezer Dill Slices without any sterilizing, boiling, or safety issues. In addition, you get to enjoy them within 24 hours. When you are more confident, let Ziedrich guide you through pickling Spicy Broccoli, Pig Ears, Korean Kimchi, and Irish Corned Beef. Her three recipes for pickled eggs are also bound to please. --Dana Jacobi

The most exhaustive treatment of pickles you can buy..........2007-07-01
If "Making Sauerkraut and Pickled Vegetables at Home" is an introductory guide, think of "The Joy of Pickling" as the definitive handbook of pickles and pickling.
The book starts out with a 30 page primer on the art and science of pickling. All of the mysteries of pickling methods are revealed here. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book, but there is so much more.
The next chapter is 44 pages devoted to the healthiest of all pickles, the lactic-fermented vegetable. Cucumbers are here, as you would suspect, as are radishes, turnips, cucumber kimchi, mustard greens, cherry tomatoes, apples, bean sprouts, and a Turkish mixed-pickle.
On page 63 is one of many education side-bar articles. This one is about "the perfect pickle pot". An old Chinese design with a built in airlock. You can expect this sort of educational experience all the way through the book. I have never before seen a recipe book as a "page turner" before picking this up.
There is a section on "fresh" pickles. These are pickles that are not fermented but instead are preserved with vinegar. This topic is exhausted with nearly 100 pages of recipes and insight.
Next up is my favorite section. Cabbages! I have long been a fan of kimchi but it is so expensive at the local grocery. Now I make it by the gallon. (For which my wife is thankful of the walk-in pantry.) There are also German sauerkraut recipes, Chinese sour cabbage, in fact, more versions of pickled cabbage than I ever knew existed, and I have loved every one of them.
Now it may sound like a lot to cram into a single book, but to be honest, there are six sections I haven't even covered.
Chapter 5 is devoted to pickles from the far east.
Chapter 6 is a collection of sweet pickles.
Chapter 7 serves your instant gratification for quick pickles. (Two days or less)
Chapter 8 "Freezer Pickles" Pickles without heat or fuss.
Chapter 9 Chutneys, salsas, and relishes.
Chapter 10 Pickles meat, fish and eggs.
While I myself am partial to the fermented pickles, I have to say that this book is a wonderful resource for all types of pickles. If you make pickles, this book should certainly be in your pantry, right next to your pickling crock!
Truely a good cookbook!.......2007-06-22
I was kind of a newbie at canning when I bought this book. I had only tried it 2 or 3 times before I got this book. It seemed to be a rather confusing and frustrating process. I read some of the other cookbooks aimed at veterans and was just confused. They would say things such as "adjust the jar rings"--I'm thinking "adjust from what, to what?". This author is kind enough to be clear. She says something like: "screw on the jar rings until they are tight, but not as tight as they could be if you apply force". Now that makes sense to me. I've made a few recipes from this book now. The instructions are very clear, and all of the things I made have turned out perfect. And while I love the canning recipes, I REALLY love the section on freezer pickles. I get rave reviews every time I bring the Lime-Mint Freezer Pickles to an event, and they couldn't be easier to make. And for the advanced picklers out there, this book has plenty of really interesting, unique recipes to try. I highly recommend this book for all skill levels!

The Joys Of Pickling.......2005-10-26
I really enjoyed the book and the recipes But I feel there was
too much emphasis on peppers and gherkins etc.I was actually
looking for more seafood and meats brines and preservatives.
But very happy anyhow. Thanks Lins.
More than cucumbers..........2005-04-27
This book is wonderful addition to my cookbook collection. I'm very picky about cookbooks but the minute I got this one home from the library I was hooked. I ordered my own copy the next day. I love the chapter on "Unique Pickles of the Far East". My fridge is never without Korean or Mrs. Kim's pickled garlic; it's so convenient to pluck a peeled, pickled clove or two out of a jar when a meal needs garlic. The chapter on "Quick Pickles" was made for impatient souls like me, these pickles are ready in 2 days or so. There is also a great chapter on chutneys and relishes. Yum! There are so many pickle recipes besides the obvious cukes and green beans. "Joy of Pickling" includes prunes, shrimp, mangoes, purslane, Jicama and many other surprises.
If your garden (or friend's garden or farmer's market) runneth over, and you like pickled foods, you won't know how you lived without this book.
